Tell us your story: On the morning of 09/11/01 at about 6:30 A.M., my husband came into our room and turned the television on, yelling at me to wake up and see what was happening in New York. The sound of his voice horrifed me but could never have prepared me for the horror I felt as I watched the second plane fly into that tower! I was utterly silent as I sat up in bed, aghast at what I saw and hoping it was some kind of trick photography being played. I moved through my day in a mechanical way, unable to really concentrate on my job. My co-workers had brought in small televisions and for the better part of the day we hung together in small groups around cubicles, watching in disbelief at the destruction, terror and carnage that has forever changed our world, destroyed our innocense and left us with a feeling of vulenerability that the United States has not afforded me in my 47 years. Our Manager offered to let anyone go home that wanted to without question or problems but all of us stayed, grateful for a way to try to feel normal in such a frenzied, confusing day. Throughout the day, when I went outside, strangers would stop and talk to me, asking if I knew what happened and as I shook my head in an affirmative but mechanical manner, our eyes would meet and we would tell each other how very afraid we were, sometimes even hugging one another as if to somehow reassure ourselves that our world would be ok once again. I can not know the horror that New York lived but my heart goes out to all that lost loved ones. We will survive this, we are Americans...the Greatest Nation on Earth! We have seen trying times before and have risen above them and together in a united stand against evil, our Country and our spirits will triumph, in honor of those souls lost! . Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had taken my mother to the doctor's office for surgery to remove a cancerous growth. We were there for quite a while. The doctor's office had piped in music so we were oblivious to what was going on. Around 10 AM the doctor came out to the waiting room and announced that a plane had hit the WTC building. I thought that it was only a small commuter plane and that this was nothing more than an unfortunate accident. A few minutes later he came back to say that there were two large planes that hit both WTC buildings and that one had collapsed. By now other patients were arriving and stating that another plane was unaccounted for and that the Pentagon had been struck as well. I went out to listen to the radio for updates. I had difficulty reaching my husband on the cell phone - he was working in Philadelphia. He was to have been doing field work at the Verizon building across the street from WTC that day - by luck, that visit was resche- duled and he was not there. It was a very eerie time - to know that such tragedy was occuring only 75 miles from us (to the North and South). Later that day I remember the strange silence in the skies as we are in the landing pattern for Phila International Airport - no commercial planes were flying. We are also close to McGuire AFB. We had many fighters and large military aircraft flying over our house. I also found out that our neignbor had been attending a seminar in NYC and had been staying at the WTC Marriott - she survived. I will remember the many tears I shed that day and how I wanted to be there to help. Even now, the tears flow quite freely. We lost many local folks that day. Our region was very devastated. I was stationed in Camp Stanley, Korea at the time and it was 3:00 a.m. in Korea when I first heard about it. My husband, then my boyfriend came rushing in and woke me up. "Wendy, Wendy, wake up! We're under attack! They've just bombed the Pentagon!!" I sat up with a start. "What???!!!" He proceeded to tell me about it, and then turned on the TV. My first look showed me the twin towers smoking. I was in shock. After that, I was scared to death. I was scared that we were going to war and it would be another World War. I thought "Whoa" I did'nt join the army to fight, just to try it out. I was scared. That was how my September 11th, 2001 went. God Bless America. Have strength, we will make it through. I had worked the previous night and so I was asleep. My Husband came and woke me and said that I must come and look at the TV because two planes had hit the world trade centre. I spent the next 5 hours glued to the screen as the story unfolded before me. I went to work that night in a sombre mood. The following day I bought every UK newspaper, read them from cover to cover and then placed them all in plastic bags and put them away.If I ever have children of my own I will take them out one day and let them see the full horror of what happened that day. From across the Atlantic we here in England can never understand the full horror of what New York and America went through that day but the imagination is bad enough.Tomorrow is the year Anniversary of the tragedy and my friend and I will travel into London to the US embassy in Grosvenor Square for a memorial service. Rest assured that as far afield as the UK tomorrow at 1:46 UK time the country will take part in a minutes silence and we will all be thinking of you and your loss. Tell us your story: Like millions of other people I was watching the Today show when they cut away to the shot of the first plane hitting the tower. Perhaps like some others, my first reaction was that it must be an accident; the plane looked small in the TV shot and so I assumed it must be a commuter plane. But when the second plane hit, that optimistic assumption about an accident was shattered. As I headed out to work, I thought that it would be interesting to collect online reactions to the unfolding events and "flashbulb memories." But I worried that such an effort might be seen as exploitative of the tragedy. My tendency to minimize or underestimate the scope or the events continued. When we heard on the car radio, a report of fire at the Pentagon, I suggested that it must by hysteria--how could something simultaneously be happening in Northern Virginia. Later, when I heard speculation that the WTC might collapse, I dismissed that as well. It was all much worse than I or anyone could have assumed. Televisions were on everywhere and all eyes were glued to the set. I did not know what was going on. I asked one girl and she told me, but I still, at that moment, did not realize the depth of it all. Classes cancelled and when I got home I turned on the TV to see exactly what all the madness was about. I could not believe such a thing could happen. I would have never thought in my life time I would see something like this right here in our country, America the beautiful. When the said that the body count was over 3000, I was just in shock. What if it would have been here? What if it were my friends and family who got killed in such a way? I was nervous for a while after that. I did not want to go to any big events or concerts in fear that the terrorist would try and strike again and maybe this time it would be here. It really was an eye opener for us all. I just thank God for my life anf my family and friends. My heart goes out to any and everyone who lost a loved one on 9/11. Some of the stories that I have heard over the radio were too much to handle. This really affected us all in one way or another. I hope that nothings like this ever happens again. The worst part for me was when my father told me that he was getting shipped off. He is in the Army reserves and has been for years. He said that his unit was on standby and I just lost it. I could not stop crying. I also have three cousins in the service. One of them was shipped to San Antonio to wait for further orders. It was and still is a very trying time for was all. I sat in disbelief listening to live accounts of buildings falling and confusion. I was stunned. Upon reaching Little Rock, my intent was to drive directly to the Arkansas Baptist Convention building on West Capitol Street. Tell us your story: I had just gotten into work that morning when one of my co-workers came over to tell me that a plane had hit into the World Trade Center. He said it was on the television in the confrence room. Just as I entered the room the second plane hit the second tower. I was in a room with about 25 other co-workers. We were all pretty shoook up. I went back to my desk a few minutes later, and tried to call my youngest daughter who works in the times square area. She travels from New Jersey through the Lincoln Tunnel. As I was trying to reach her someone yelled over that they had hit the Pentagon in Washington. I was really scared, and I was beginging to get more frightened when I couldn.t reach my daughter, or my home. I finally got through to my husband on his cell phone. He had not heard anything about the World Trade Center, so I filled him in as to what I saw and heard on the TV and my raido. I told him I couldn't reach my daughter, and he tried to calm me down. He said he would try to reach her on his cell phone, and would call me back. I ran back and forth between the confrence room and my desk for the next hour watching what was happening on the TV and waiting for my husband or daughter to call me. At about 10:45 or so my son called me. He told me he and my daughter had gotten up late, so he tried to take her to Staten Island, New York, where she could catch a bus easier, and make it to work on time. They were stopped from going over the Outerbrider Crossing by Police Officers with shot guns. Everyone had to turn around and they did, and they called me as son as they got home. I was very glad they left late and didn't make it over that bridge, because the bus my daughter would have taken passed right in front of the World Trade Center. We were told by our office that we should go home, but when one of my co-workers tried to get to the train staten in Newark they were told by the police to run and get away from the station because of a bomb threat. I had no other was of getting home, so I tried to reach my husband again. It took me about another half hour to reach him, and he said he would come to get me, but didn't know how long it would take. He asked if I was alright where I was, and I said I thought so, and I told him I would wait outside my bulilding for him. It took him about and hour to reach me, but I was never so glad to see him. It took about 2 hous to get home, and the look of relief on my son and daughters face when they saw us pull up to the hous made me cry. By the time I had gotten home my borther in Calfiornia had called about 4 times and left messages. He was't sure if I still worked in the Workd Trade Center or not. My previous job was in the World Trade Center Tower 2. I workded there before the first bombing, and before this one. Evern if they rebild the towers again, I don't think I will press my luck a third time. Both of my daughters had worked in the World Trade Center, my youngest one just quit the temp job there 5 months earlier. Tell us your story: i found it odd to see so many planes flying over me landing in the short hour and a half that i was on the football field at my school. upon going inside, i went across the street and got a breakfast taco, this is around 8:30 am... and then my friend told me that someone had flown a plane into the world trade center building. my first thought was that it was some sort of accident, not an act of terrorism. we then turned on the tv in the band hall, and began to watch the events unfold in front of us. as first period started at school, the teachers tried to control us and not allow us to watch tv. but we did anyway. and gradually an odd feeling of fear settled in. i didn't know what was happening only that terrorists had blown up part of american culture. i felt horrible and anxiously awaited the final bell, and sped home, trying to piece together what little information i had gotten about the events... I went to the t.v. and saw the plane hit on a replay and then i saw the second one hit.....and my mouth fell open and i could not shut it and my hand went to my mouth with utter speechlessness except to think " oh my god" and then biblical thoughts of " is the world ending? are we at war?" because i knew i had not thought of it in ages but right away i knew or thought that " GOD had removed his protective hand from the U.S." because we had let this world go such astray from our kids to our lifestyles etc with total acceptance by doing nothing or very little. I did not watch anything else on t.v. for 3 months,went to a revival about revelations every night for 30 days because i thought i needed to brush up on my religion and read the bible asking alot of questions that i had never asked and i am 40. I was on the phone with my wife, telling her that a plane had crashed into the north tower and that I was alright (in the south tower)when the second plane hit. I told her that there had just been an explosion and she yelled at me to get out of there. I told her simply, that I would call her back. Two and a half hours later, almost two hours after the first collaspe, I was finally able to get in touch with her. Reading some of the stories here confirms an opinion of mine, that those people outside the trade center that day, had it worse than most of us who were inside. It wasn't an unusual day, but I can remember that it was so beautiful that morning. Not a cloud in the sky. I can remember turning on the the tv around 8:40 and looking at Good Morning America. Then around about 8:50am, a news bulletin cames across the screen. When the first pictures were shown, I couldn't believe it! I screamed to my wife. "Robin, an airplane has just flew into the Trade Center." She said what are you talking about. I said come here. Then she saw what had taken place. It left me numb and asking for answers. I couldn't just believe what happened here- in America. Are we so despised that people would try to destroy what we are all about. We have so many freedoms and opportunities, that some religious zealots would do the unthinkable. I know people who lost. They will never forget. I will never forget. This morning my 15yr old daughter asked me if I thought this would be in the history books. I responded yes, I would imagine it will be in all history books throughout the world. This would be an event that would affect the lives of people near and far. Many were lost in this attack but many were also saved by todays hero's. While all this chaos was going on I was sitting in my second period class at the Bellevue Jr. High in Bellevue, Ohio. When the news came on we were all lost in confusion. Not knowing what was going on or what would happen next we all watched and listened in anticipation. When all was done we were left with lost lives, trapped men, women, and children under all the ruble and a wound that would forever scar those who had to witness or live through this event. One year has past and most people have tried to live theri life day by day the best they can. This will fovever be a tragedy that affects us all. Tell us your story: On September 10 I made an entry in my journal, rejoicing about the fact that I had a doctor's appointment the next morning and would be allowed to sleep in later than usual. My alarm went off around 8 AM on the morning of September 11. I listened to the radio as I got ready to leave; I was out of my room, the radio off by 8:20. My mom drove me to the doctor's office; we listened to a U2 tape in the car. After my appointment she drove me to the high school. It was around 9:15 when I walked in the front door. The entrance to our high school is a hallway with the main office on one side and the guidance office on the other side. The guidance office has glass walls and a TV. I remember seeing the janitors standing clustered around the TV and I wondered what was going on. I went to my locker and then to my history class. I had no idea what was going on. Every room in our school has a TV. I sat down in my seat and looked up, and my teacher came over to tell me what was going on. She was crying. My friend Lee and I sat in the back row of our AP US History class and watched the World Trade Center fall down. When the towers disappeared in a cloud of dust I remember my classmates saying "They're still standing, look, you can see them." I remember telling them "No, guys, they're gone, the towers are gone. We just watched them fall down. The World Trade Center is gone." "No," my friend Jess said, "They're still there..." We went to band. My band teacher is in the National Guard. He was pissed. "We're going to play," he said. "Everyone get out their instruments because we're going to play. If we don't play, they'll win..." We played. We watched CNN for the last ten minutes of class. For the rest of the day we watched CNN in every class. Most people skipped lunch and spent the period with a favorite teacher, watching CNN. In Chemistry, in English, in Pre-Calculus, we watched CNN, and everyone was silent. The principal came on the PA system around noon to tell everyone what was happening. Like we didn't already know. He was crying. You could hear it in his voice. One of the secretaries ran through the halls to the parking lot, sobbing. She had known somebody in the towers. Everyone e-mailed their parents and loved ones. For the first time ever, the bus ride home was silent. When I got home I parked myself in front of my computer. My father, a carpenter, was home early from work and was standing in front of the TV, watching CNN. I remember walking into the living room and seeing him standing, arms crossed over his chest, blocking the TV from my view, and feeling safe. I updated my weblog 15 times on September 11, some of which I'll include here: 6:29 PM: "This isn't real. This can't be real. I was just there this summer, this isn't real. They're shitting us. This is a bad April Fool's joke. It's not real." 7:24 PM: "I don't want to go to school tomorrow. I don't want to leave my house ever again." 7:55 PM: "I think something like this makes us realize how trivial most of the things in our day-to-day lives are. I mean, when it comes right down to it, who really gives a fuck if you do your math homework? Or if you are a little bit non-confrontational. Or if you don't like someone else's writing style. It doesn't matter if you're pro- or anti-RPS. If you like 'N Sync or Metallica. If you write het or slash or you don't write fic at all. If you're 16 or 46. When it comes down to it, we're a community, and that's really all that matters. All that extra stuff is just bullshit. All that posturing and all those boundaries and I-can't-like-you-because-you-like-her, and I-don't-like-you-because-you-don't-do-this. It's all bullshit. And it doesn't matter, not one bit. What matters is that we be here for each other, and keep up this wonderful outpouring of love and caring and support I've seen so far. This is a beautiful thing, everybody pulling together like this. I'm going to try to stay hopeful. Everything looks pretty fucking bad right now. But hey...when you hit rock bottom, the only way you can go is up, right?" 10:26 PM: "I'm trying not to go into my room because I know when I do I'm going to curl up in my bed and cry a lot and never come out. I'm scared. I...all my fucking friends. The world's gonna completely collapse around us, dude, and we have no fucking clue what it's gonna be like. I'm scared to death of going to school tomorrow because I don't want to pull into the parking lot and see Mr. Swanhall's parking space empty and think, he went. I don't want to know he's down there. Jesus, when I saw him this afternoon, I asked him about music lessons. I didn't even remember he was in the National Guard. Stupid, stupid me. And I want desperately to hear from Mr. Boyer. I mean, he goes to NYC a lot. It wouldn't be completely unheard of for him to be there. Oh, god, if anything's happened to him...I honestly don't know what I'm going to do. I trust him more than anyone in the fucking world. The enormity of today hasn't sunk in yet. I don't know if it ever will. I feel like I need to keep posting. Need to keep doing anything that isn't checking my e-mail every four seconds. I want my nice safe world back, the one where I worry about homework and lunch and where I'm going this weekend. The one where scary is a math test. God. Life is so fucking trivial. Tell someone you love them, and mean it. Tell someone who doesn't know already. And then tell people that already know. Because fuck, at any moment that person you have a crush on or the friend you're fighting with and still miss could be gone." 11:29 PM: "here's hoping that when i wake up, the world will have stopped collapsing and there will be an e-mail from mr. boyer in my inbox." I talked to my girlfriend on the phone that night and we cried together. My father bought 28 pairs of leather work gloves, put five empty taping buckets in the back of his truck, and made the three-hour drive to the city to see if he could help out with the cleanup effort. I wanted him to take me with him, but he refused. Instead, he brought me a flag pin he bought from a street vendor a block from the police blockade. It's been on my backpack ever since. My bank account was activated on September 10. I wrote my first check ever to the Red Cross. In mid-September, my family went to New Jersey, because my grandparents live there. On our way home we stopped at Eagle Rock, from which you could see the New York City skyline, including the World Trade Center, and it was so bizarre to not see the towers. An impromptu shrine had been set up at there. I remember a sculpture, probably made by some kindergartener. Two styrofoam towers glued to a piece of cardboard. TURN ON THE RADIO/I RAN TO TURN ON THE RADIO,AND AT THAT TIME REALIZED PEOPLE WERE STANDING IN FRONT OF THE T.V. IN THE WAITING ROOM, IT WAS SO QUIET YOU COULD HEAR A PIN DROP. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I got up the morning of 9-11 at 5:00 AM. I told my dad goodbye, as he was going to the LA Airport to leave for his business trip. I went to seminary and then went to school. I walked into first period and the girl next to me turned to me and said, "Oh man, did you hear about the plane that crashed?" and I said to her, "What plane?" and she told me how she watched a plane on the news crash into one of the twin towers. She told me they thought only 6 people died. I contemplated that for a moment and said to her, "If a plane crashed and only six people died, did the people on the plane live? I don't think that?s possible." She shrugged and said she didn't know. I wanted to go home and watch the news. I wanted to see if my dad was okay. My first period teacher walked in and told us that both towers had crashed and that thousands were dead. I sat there. I couldn't think. It was not real; how could anything like this ever happen in the United Stated? At lunch with my friends, we swapped rumors that we had heard and our different frights. I was scared because I saw airplanes flying over the school and I was afraid they would come and kill us. I was also afraid for my dad. It turned out that my dad was fine, but he wasn't able to get into the airport because they had shut it down. The news was constantly on in my house, but I didn't want to watch it because I knew it would scare me. On September 11, 2002, I watched a special on it, and yes, it scared me a lot. I heard about a lot of things, like people jumping out of buildings so they wouldn't get burned, but I couldn't believe it until I saw the footage of someone ending their life at my school's September 11 Memorial assembly. I am glad I was alive to witness this tragic event, but I am also sad. I feel very privileged to live in this great country and I love America. I hope everyone else does also. Tell us your story: By the time September came around, the temperature had been getting cold and my mood was rapidly declining, school had started not so long go, after all. I'm not too big on TV, so I hadn't watched the news that morning and hadn't heard anything about the tradgedy. On my way to school, I was half asleep, but the Radio was on and I heard occasional words from the news caster. "Now it looks like the enitre city of Manhattan has been put on lock down." It caught my attention with a pang of curiosity, but I hadn't heard anything about it, so I didn't think it was important. For the rest of the day I hear people in almost frantic frenzies talking to their friends or their teachers about what had happened. "Did you hear? The first tower has collapsed!" Tower? What tower? I didn't know, but now I knew something big was happening. I think it took until fifth period (Around 1:00) for me to finally figure it out. My spanish teacher turned on the TV and all of the stations were loop-playing the footage of the plane crashing into the North Tower. Explosions and screams could be heard around the camera, who's opperator had begun to turn and run. It was horrible, but I still wasn't sure what it was. Maybe an accident, maybe the start of WWIII. All of the students were given a letter from the head of the district assuring everyone that it would be alright. In the letter, it told us exactly what had happened. Now I did know what was going on. It was a horrible attack and I felt the essence of hatred toward those who could do such a thing, but I didn't know how bad it really was. The attacks on Columbine Highschool were closer and impacted me more at first. But the more I learned of the figures, 3000 deaths, so many lives impacted. The more I learned about the truth behind the attacks, the grotesque horror of the situation slowly became known. For a long time, longer than most people, I didn't know what was going on, I was one of the only people. But once I did, I was brought to tears because I could do nothing. I felt horrible and hoped, I still do, that Justice would be served. God bless America. Hold strong. I didn't think much of it at first I thought a plane just went out of control and acidently crashed into the first world trade center.
