Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My son and I were running late. I'd turned on the TV for background noise, my son taking his bath. A celebrity interview was interrupted and Brian Gumble began to tell what happened. I got my son in front of the TV and told him, "You will remember this day for the rest of your life." We both will. I took him to school. The first tower fell. I went to work. Kept going back to the breakroom to find out what had happened now. The news got worse and worse. At Wal-Mart, 500 employees and 2,000 customers wandered around in shock, asking over and over, "What's happening?" when what we really wanted to know was, "How can this be real?" As the shock wore off over the next few days, resolution took over. The perpetrators had to be brought to justice. We wrapped ourselves in red, white and blue until the shelves were empty, even the ribbon. People who had let prejudices and grudges keep them from considering themselves American suddenly saw themselves as nothing but Americans. We all gave to the Relief Effort, money, time and blood. In the last year a resolve has grown in me to get to know all the stories of all the individuals who died that day. This is my personal war on terrorism, because the terrorists thought their lives were worthless, insignificant. I read every story. I watch the memorials. I stare at the pictures. I will learn the value of each one who died. I will not give the victory to the monsters. I will hold the memories of these precious souls in my heart, a living memorial to September 11th. We were called at our hotel by relatives back East the morning of 9/11, and immediately turned on the TV to see the horrific events taking place. The business conference in Vegas may or may not have been cancelled -- we don't know. We just decided we needed to get home to friends and family. Obviously we couldn't fly home, and calling rental companies for cars to drive back to Baltimore was futile. Luckily one person in our group had rented an SUV. So 5 of us, with all of our luggage, piled in and headed back East. It took us three days. It's the only time I've driven cross country. It's a shame it wasn't the kind of trip where we could stop along the way to enjoy our beautiful country... We let our company's travel agency worry about complaints from the car rental company for taking the car cross country. Tell us your story: I began my morning as usual going to the shop to help my brother with his AAA-business, when my mother calls and says turn the tv on, so i did. Within minutes of turning the tv on I saw the second plane crash into the Tower, I felt so sick at my stomach. As we all watched in disbelief, we just was silent, without a word-then we realized that this was on purpose, why??? All those inocent ones. And today one-year later it still feels the same, the feeling in my stomach as I saw the building just fall, with people jumping from the Tower, knowing that children where there scared, along with the parents also scared. Why would such a thing happen like this. I know that the bible fore tells things like this, it is so awful-what else in our life-time is going to happen? I do not believe that there will be peace among other countries. I think it is impossible. Though my opinion, that is how I feel. We were learning about proofs and such, and my classmates and I had no idea of what was about to happen to history. Well, when my class ended I was walking up the stairs in the 100 Hall and I saw one of my best friends, Shawn, who seemed extremely worried and energetic. She said to me, "A plane flew into one of the World Trade Centers, and Rachel is crying!" Rachel was one of our friends. I remember Shawn saying this perfectly. It was weird and foggy. So I get my binders and books for the next class and I am not really worried about what had happened because I didn't understand. When if first happened I don't think many people understood. I continued to my next class, english. Everyone was buzzing about what had happened. Many people for the first time were finding out what had happened. Many of my classmates were confused and wanted to know more about what happened. The Second Tower was down also now. I don't think we understood yet what had happened. My next class was French and an announcement was made that the Pentagon was hit, and the Twin Towers were about to crumble. Both of them. The tallest buildings I had personally ever seen. Gone. Everyone was confused. Who had done this? Why had they done this? Why can't we find out right now what was happening. Every minute was crucial. Who knew what was to happen next? The announcements said not to turn on the T.V. I think that was good. To see this live might have been too hard. My next was class was a computer class where we had the freedom to search the internet for more information. In this class no one really talked to each other, but that day we were working together to find some information about what had happened. We didn't find much. The rest of the day I can't remember. That's all. I remember I went home and was looking on the internet and the t.v. at the same time to find some more information. Every major station even MTV was covering 9/11 information. I saw the first taping of the actual airplane coming into the building when I was home. I didn't cry then. I was too shocked, scared, and full of butterflies to cry. I didn't really cry about it until a month later when all the names of the victims were shown. It was horrible. It was different. It wasn't what I wanted. No one wanted it. We have moved on, but we are still scarred. No one can forget what happened. I think about it everyday. I will never forget. The terrorists highjacked the planes because they were mad at the USA. I didn't even know that anything was going on until I got to my 3rd period class. The classroom had the news on and we were watching the planes in the building when they were showing replays. Then I seen the 2nd plane hit the building, I felt very sad and mad. I was feeling sad for the people that were in the planes and mad at the people that did it. A little while after the planes hit the towers I was the two buildings fall to the ground. When I saw this happening I was shocked to to see those two tall buildings crash to the ground. There was a great ball of smoke and dust coming from the buildings. The thing that was very bad that the buildings and the views of the city was and is changed forever. The thing that scared me the most was when the teacher said that we were going to war and that the draft might be lowered to 16 years old if they needed more people to fight. After class I was going to my locker to get my things for my next class and my friend was hitting her locker and crying. I asked her what was wrong and she said, "nothing." Finally I got her to tell me what was wrong, she told me that she thought that her sister might have been in the buildings when the plane's hit because she was in the military and had been stationed down there. I felt so bad because she was all upset and I was trying to help her out and luckily it was kind of working. I had my arm around her and she hugged me because she was crying and we were standing there for a while both trying to calm one another down. I finally got her calmed down. I told her it would be okay then she tried to call her mom from the high school office to see if they had talked to her sister but she wasn't there. In my gym class we were going to go out side to play football and the school made us come in because they were worried that there were terrorists on the run and they didn't want them to intrude our school. In school there were many people upset by the occuring incident. The school had a two minute silence to honor those that died and that had been injured in the attack. The school had the news on all through the school. After a while I was getting tired of hearing about it because that's all we talked about. I just wanted to forget it all for one day. Later I tried to call my friend to see if she was okay because of earlier she was so upset. Then we talked for a little bit then I let her go. Not the 9/11 is not talked about very much anymore and half mast has been raised, probably because some people just don't want to talk about it anymore and others just get too upset. There is a different new thing that still deals with 9/11. I still feel bad for the people I didn't even know because it's just the thought that someone would do that to inocent people. On 9/11 the whole USA was changed for a long time. September 11th has changed many peoples' lives plus my own. Now the police are on 24 hour a day watch for people to do with bombs and many other things that has to do with the 9/11. Since then there has been many changes that have been taking place that has never done before. The USA has put police and securities in places were people go to get away from everything. Now they have to worry about if something will happen to them in the places that they love with the people that they love. Tell us your story: Shortly after the first plane flew into the WTC, I went to a shop in Bradford, England with my mother to help her buy a new TV. When we entered the shop, the staff were watching a breaking news broadcast about a plane crash into the WTC, apparently an accident. We bought a TV and took it to my mother's home to install it. Every UK channel bore live broadcasts of a second crash into the second tower, and the first pictures of that scene. Reports were coming in of a wave of terrorist hijackings, using loaded passenger aircraft as missiles. Osama Bin Laden featured heavily in the discussions. Our whole family was affected, my parents had visited the building previously. Europeans also worked and died in the globalised WTC buildings, where many of the best in world trade and finance worked. It was an attack on globalisation itself and a challenge to the entire West and the United Nations. At the time we did not realise the full significance of those events. We heard of the incredible bravery of emergency services, of actual passengers on the fateful flights and other innocent victims who lived and worked near the crash sites. But we supported American initiatives to move the front line to Al Qaeda and the Taleban in Afghanistan. There have been maniacal bomb attacks since in Madrid, and London last year. Militarily however, it has become more difficult for the anti-prophet Bin Laden to strike the West in grandiose satanic attacks. Many Muslims died in the London attacks. The vast majority of Muslims reject Al Qaeda and their methods. They are embarrassed and offended by Al Qaeda's claims to represent God and Islam. Young extremists who feel alienated by the West are Al Qaeda's main source of support. In many ways, 9/11 was a watershed in modern history. Prior to 1990, fundamentalist extremists backed by Iran used hijacks and hostage-taking to attempt to secure their demands. After the Lebanon suicide bombings against US Marines, these extremists felt they had a new, successful, inexpensive weapon. Young fanatical extremists. The Cold War ended, there was an interval of 11 years, and a new global conflict started on 9/11 - the worldwide conflict with fanatical fundamentalist extremism, started by Al Qaeda. This conflict started on 9/11 and it will not end until the last suicide bomber is gone. So don't sleep until September ends. Within moments of turning it on, the second plane hit. I recalled feeling this intense fear of war like nothing I had before. I looked at my infant son and thought how selfish I was bringing him into this world. This world, after all, was never to be the same to me. My mouth hung open as tears streamed automatically down my face. Within a couple hours, my oldest son was home from kindergarten. The moment he walked in the door, I immediately burst into tears, feeling like I'd betrayed his innocence as well. The images were live on the tv, as he saw the destruction for the first time. I was unsure what to tell him, but I did my best. He also began to cry. With his voice still muffled to my chest, he told me that he wanted to do something for the children of New York, whose mommies and daddys won't be coming home anymore. He thought sending them all his toys might be comforting, since they always made him feel better when he was scared and lonely. Despite the panic and fear, I felt a little peace. If a horrible act of inhumanity, like this, could bring out the sensitive caring human in children, like mine, perhaps, we could be parents to a new generation. This generation could be blessed with broader vision, hope, and an ernest desire to love and care for its fellow man. An announcement was made on the loudspeaker to go to the closest room with a tv. We were all excited, thinking "Hey, we have a free day to watch tv". We were sadly mistaken. By the time we filed into my 8th grade history teachers classroom, we could hear sniffles. We turned to see our teacher had red, sore eyes as though she'd been crying and a terrified look on her face as her eyes stayed glued to the tv. I thought to myself, this might be way bigger than i think.. We watched in horror as a replay of what my history teacher saw was displayed on the news and i was so shocked, i could hardly move. Why would someone do something like that to us. Was it a joke? The idea of terrorism stiffened in my head for the rest of that day. The next day,at school, I noticed people weren't joking and laughing like they had the morning before. They were all strongly affected by what had happened. Though people were hurt that we can never bring back and people suffer now from that tragedy that happened over 3 years ago, America has proven to be the strongest nation in the world. I know that if we were to have Terrorist come back and bomb every state in North America but one, that one state would hold their heads high and make sure justice is served because thats how great of a nation we live in. Tell us your story: After routinely opening the library at 7am CST and getting things organized, my co-workers and I were shocked to hear (from staff that arrived around 8am) that a jet had flown into one of the Towers. Not being familiar with far away New York, we didn't really realize the impact of that statement. We immediately tried to find information about it on the internet and just as quickly, the internet shut down. It was totally overloaded with people worldwide trying to access information about the tragedy. We turned on radios to try to get more info and slowly we were informed of the enormity of the tragedy. I immediately began to say silent prayers to Christ for the wounded and dying and for their families. My younger son called me(unaware of what was happening) and told me that my infant grandson was ill. I immediately left work to go take care of him, but on the drive there I heard that the Pentagon had been attacked. I knew then that this was a well-planned, deliberate attack on the U.S. by someone and that we would go to war. While grieving for the loss of life at the Towers (although at this point I had no idea of how many people were injured), I was fearful for our military who would be called upon to defend us. I wasn't so sure, either, that an attack might not be made upon my own little east Texas town. I reached my son's home and found him watching the TV about the attacks. At this point very little was known except that three planes had hit targets. The fourth had not yet been heroically plowed into the Pennsylvania dirt by Americans trying to save the White House or some other target. My son went on to work and I held my infant grandson and cried as I watched the horrific scene unfold on television. I later went back to work and then went home to watch more coverage on the TV. I watched, cried and prayed. At some point I started writing things in a journal to help me put things in focus. The grief and destruction that I saw on television was something that I had never witnessed in my life of 49 years. It consumed my thoughts for two weeks. However, I worked, went to church, did my normal things that I have to do. Gradually I began to be able to concentrate on other things, but continued to cry each time I saw a picture or image of the horror or the people affected by it. Sweet songs of Christ's love and comfort that I heard on the radio, my Bible readings, times spent at church, and talks with my family, friends and co-workers helped to bring back a semblance of order to my world. I knew that others were not so fortunate. My family and friends became even more precious to me as I, along with the rest of America, realized anew the fragility of life and the need to make each moment important. Patriotism abounded in our little town and flags were seen everywhere. Bumper stickers and posters were displayed and continue to this date, one year later. Today, September 11, 2002, we remember that we are not alone in this world and that people in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania especially are struggling with life and loneliness for their lost loved ones. The survivors, too, are still in the process of finding meaning to it all and many have come to find that God is able to do miraculous things still. Although I know that evil is present and bent on destroying innocent people, God is in control, and that the American spirit cannot be diminished. My children and my three grandchildren can live their lives trusting a holy God and knowing that they are in His love and care. Tell us your story: I work 3rd shift and had got off work and went to meet a lady I had been talking with on the internet.We met and talked awhile and when we got back in our cars I heard it on the radio and went back to her car tell her to turn on the radio. I at that time was just thinking it was a small plane that had a problem. I went home and turned on the T.V. and eventually saw the 2nd plane hit. Even after being up all night I couldnt sleep or pry myself away from the television. My son later called me to tell me gas in Indianapolis was already up around $3.00 a gallon so I got up and went to fill up my car and it was like a scene from a movie about the end of the world. Tell us your story: STOLEN Not to be a wet blanket, but I thought I'd offer another perspective on the sad, sick, events that happened today: At 6 years old, my son Patrick has enjoyed for his whole life a luxury that few Americans have known. Born into this strange gift, he was blessed and fortunate to be in a position where he could never realize that his parents (and his parents' parents) hadn't enjoyed a similar gift. He and his young peers have lived their lives in a nation enjoying an all-too-brief period free from a sense of national fear. Unlike his parents, he hasn't been raised with a national fear of Communist Russia and the lingering threat of nuclear war. And unlike their parents, he has never known air raid drills, blackout curtains, or the turmoil of world war. Tonight, I looked in his eyes and witnessed the exact moment at which that innocence was stolen. After an uneventful Karate class, I surprised him by telling him that we were going to have dinner at a new pizza place that had just opened. He was told that we were celebrating his successful belt testing last Friday - this week he will graduate from a yellow belt to an orange belt. Really, I just wanted to keep him away from TV until bedtime. I knew that turning on the TV would mean having to explain what had happened this morning, and frankly, I wasn't up to it. I also hoped that maybe we wouldn't have to face it at all. While I've always believed in discussing weighty issues openly and honestly with Patrick, I just didn't think that this was something that he could benefit from learning about. I thought that the distraction of pizza might be a better idea. Shortly after we had sat down and ordered, I watched as my plan fell apart. Straight ahead of me, just above Patrick's head, was a TV which I could see clearly. It was off, and I hadn't really paid much attention to it. When it came on, I realized it would only be a matter of moments until he turned around to see the coverage that I had been watching all day. As I heard the sound come from behind me, I realized that he wouldn't have to turn around at all - behind me, on the wall opposite the other TV, the same coverage was playing. As I watched in a trance, I saw an image that was new to me. It was of the second airliner striking the WTC, shot from the street below the tower in such a way that you could actually see it breaking through the exterior of the building. As I looked away from the screen, I made eye contact with Patrick as he pointed out to me that "an airplane just flew through that building and exploded." I've never seen him so perplexed. I saw in his eyes something I had never seen before. He had seen horrible acts of destruction before. I had caught him watching war footage on TV when I assumed he was watching Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel. We had walked the encampments at Valley Forge together and talked about the lives lost during the Revolutionary War. We had discussed how his great grandfather had been a prisoner of war in Germany, and the abuses he suffered. But each time I could explain it away, and ease his mind. "That happened in another country", I would say. Or "that was before we had the kind of weapons that we have today to protect our country." Even as we discussed the realities in a very "adult" manner, it was always easy to compartmentalize the tragedy in a box far-removed from his everyday life. Until now. What he watched as we sat in that pizza place was the lives of people just like him and me being taken for no reason. It was happening now, and it was happening in our backyard. As we talked about it then, and later before he fell asleep at home, I was amazed at just how much of this he "got". He assumed that the plane was full of people (why else would a plane be in the air?). He understood that at that speed, every person on the plane was killed in the crash. As he saw footage of the towers after the collision, he saw the size of the holes through them and pointed out that it looked like there were a lot of floors through which the planes had crashed. When I acknowledged this, he asked if each floor was as big as one of the floors in our house. I didn't have the heart to tell him that each floor was big enough to fit his whole school inside of it. When he heard one of the commentators suggest that the WTC houses 50,000 workers, he wanted to know how many fifty-thousand was. My mind reeled, and I thought of the largest number of people he had ever seen at one time. "More people than were in the stands at the baseball game last weekend", realizing that the entire stadium would need to be refilled many times to fit that many people. I could see his mind processing the reality of that many people dying. It made no sense to try to explain that tens of thousands were evacuated / not there, etc. We talked about who would do such a thing (I told him it was "bad people" - a nod to the fact that there are people in this world who are evil). We talked about what the victims had done to deserve this (he seemed to understand the "sometimes bad things happen to good people" reasoning). We talked about the fact that the hijackers had committed suicide (I was amazed to hear him say this, and even more amazed that he really understood the concept). We talked about why a pilot would fly his plane into a building instead of fighting the hijackers (I explained the theory that, at that point, the pilots were not behind the controls). And then he asked me the question that stopped me in my tracks. "Could that ever happen here?" I stammered something about "big buildings" and "landmarks" and may have even used terms like "symbols of the American culture" as I tried to explain that Chester County would be an unlikely target. But I knew that the honest answer to his question was "Yes." And the shock that had shrouded my perception of the days events disappeared instantly and was replaced by rage. Those sons of bitches hidden in a hole in some other part of the world, who had taken the lives of thousands of innocent people whom they had never met and who had never met them, had also stolen something from my son. This wonderful little boy would face, at least periodically, the reality that something like this could happen to him. Now, like his parents who worried about nuclear war, and his grandparents who worried about air raids, he and his peers would have their own national fear. It would have been pointless to try to draw distinctions that distanced this tragedy. In his mind (or that of anyone who faced the full reality of the situation), the people who were killed or injured were just like us, going about their regular, everyday lives. Maybe they were at their desk, or flying to visit a relative, or on their way to a meeting. Nothing special, or out of the ordinary. But their lives were ended. Because of the coincidence of where they were at a particular time. For Patrick, his country was no longer without a villain to threaten its safety. His nightmares were no longer without a tangible enemy. His security could no longer be assumed. And as Patrick looked at me, his eyes continuing to beg the question "Am I safe?", I did what I hated, but knew I had to do. I lied, and told him that something like that couldn't happen "here". Tell us your story: At approximately 8AM I dropped my husband off on Church Street, one block North of the Number one tower and proceeded to drive to work in Long Island City. I had CBS radio on and Harry Harrison announced that there was smoke coming from one of the WTC towers, it seemed a plane had hit it. I arrived at work about five minutes after his announcement somewhere around 9AM. Everyone was looking at the first Tower we could see the smoke from our office then someone called and said it wasn't an accident another plane had just hit the other WTC Tower. We were all in shock and I couldn't reach my husband. I was the only one in the office with someone near the Towers. We closed the office and I was getting ready to drive back to Brooklyn at about 10AM when someone ran out of the office and stopped me to tell me my husband was home and safe, he had walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. It's not a story of sadness, or hatred, but a testament to the strength of a nation when pulled together under the most horrific circumstances. This event occurred the Friday after September 11th. I was filled with anger and pride. I remember wondering why it took something so horrible for me to finally become patriotic. My girlfriend and I were driving from Richmond, to Norfolk and were glad to be in each other's company and glad to be heading back home to family. The interstate can be fairly aggravating in the afternoons around Hampton Roads. This day was no different than the others. Everyone had a flag, a decal, a note, to show their pride and support of the nation. I didn't have a flag, but I took a piece of paper and wrote "God Bless America" and taped it to the passenger side window. We were nearly home and had just driven under an overpass where one sole person stood with a large flag and waived it over the interstate. I smiled and held my girlfriend's hand tighter. We drove a little further and a car pulled up beside us. It was filled with a rough looking group of guys, who looked like troublemakers. He looked at me and I didn't know what to expect, or what he was thinking. He looked at my sign and simply shook his head. I smiled back. The next exit came up and they put their signal on to move over. As he merged onto the exit, he opened his window and simply stuck out his arm and made the peace sign. I watched him go off into the distance, arm outstretched. Two guys, two strangers, two Americans connected that day. It still brings tears to my eyes. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was listening to Art Bell on KOMO when I fell asleep and had a very vivid vision. I saw a large moon shaped, "Other World" come out of the east and strike our land with great destruction. I e-mailed Art Bell and told him about the vision, I also e-mailed the KOMO radio & T.V. Station in Seattle and informed them of the same. I also e-mailed Rush Limbaugh about the vision. Being a star gazer, I was watching the milky way in the section of the "Northern Cross" and asking God to reveal to me the meaning of the vision. The next morning, 7-11, I was listening to the news on, KNWX radio station in Seattle and heard the news that one plane had struck the World Trade tower, then they interupted to say that another plane had struck the seccond tower. I hurriedly got dressed and told my son John, who is head programmer at Fort Lewis, and he hurried over to get busy with the computers and be of further help. Tell us your story: It was my day off of work and I was sitting by myself drinking my second cup of coffee watching the news thinking about all the stuff I was going to get done today in the house. When the news break came on and I saw the plane crash into the first tower I was in a fog at first. My mind couldn't percieve what was happening. Then I watched as the second tower got hit. I started to feel scared and anxious. Then the Pentagon then the plane in PA. I was totally bewildered. All I could think about were all those poor innocent people. How could anybody be so cruel. When the towers collapsed so did I. I felt so helpless. I just sat and watched and cried as the moments passed. I just kept thinking how could so many lifes be taken so quickly. Of course the first person I lashed out at was God. How could he let this happen? Where was he when these poor people needed him. In time I realized I couldn't blame God for the total lack of disreguard of human life. One year later on Sept. 11th, 2002 I feel so sad again. Once again helpless. I can only watch as people cry over the loss of their loved ones. M y heart goes out to each and every one of them. I wish them hope, I wish them love, and I wish them peace. I feel so sad! Tell us your story: My story has previously been told, but looking back five years later it still leaves an eerie feeling in the pit of my stomach. It sickens me thinking about the horror the victims, their familes, citizens of this country and those abroad went through on that day. My son is now five. I tried to explain to him yesterday what had happened when he was only eight months old. He still isn't old enough to understand, but someday he will. Someday he will understand the sacrifices made on that day - willingly and unwillingly. Someday he will understand that no matter what happens in our lives, we have to push on. Someday he will understand that September 11 is not only a day of rememberance, but a day of pride for this country...to be proud that we can endure even in the face of the unthinkable, to be proud of how this country came together in a time of great need, and to be proud of our heroes that fought the battle that day in the air and on the ground.
