Tell us your story: I was at work and I work for the government.We have a couple locations and my location is off of the army base.Well we were working and someone came up to me and said a plane hit the World Trade Center well of course I thought well it was an accident.My coworkers daughter was working in the second building that was hit training someone to replace her or something like that.Well they had started evacuating the building and were told to return to their offices and she was on her way back up and got off the elevator at the 64th floor and started back down the steps.Well she did come out and made.My coworker did not find out until 7pm or so that her daughter was fine other than her legging hurting I think and of course her emotional state.Well my coworkers son-in-law didn't hear from her until 4pm and told her husband to pick her up in New Jersey where she had taken the ferry ride after evacuating NYC.Well my coworker of course that sad day went home and then the rest of us went home about 10:30 am.I will always remember that day because on the radio that morning they had said that it was 911 day in which we honor those who serve our community using this services.I believe that this day at first was meant to honor our policemen/policewomen,firemen,emt and whatever else we may use this service for.Now I know that this is truely their day and we should do anything we can to remember those that died,injured or had a relative that was effected.Please know that the people that day didn't die invane they died doing what they do on a daily basis and think nothing of it.My heart goes out to everyone and especially those children that were born in this world not knowing their father and how much he cared for his family. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work that day, it was 8:37 am our time. My brothers girlfriend called him first and then my brother called me. It was at the time when the first plane hit. I turned on the tv to see if my brother was telling the truth. Sure enough he was. I had turned it on and watched for a little bit thinking it was over. Unfortunatly I thought wrong. The next thing you know is that the Pentagon is being hit, a second plane crashes into the second tower,a plane goes down in Pennsylvania, and then the horror. I had fell into my chair when it happend;the two twin towers fell down crushing everyone and everything in it. The tears were rolling down my face at this time. I couldnt even think of anything except who did this and how will they be punished. I also thought about the thousands of people who were probably dead. To think another human could do such a horrible thing, it broke my heart exspecially since they did it with our own planes. I called everyone I knew to tell them that I love them dearly. It was history what happend. When President Bush came to Nebraska heading for Offut Air Force Base, we Nebraskins were afraid. We didnt know if they would come here and do something awful just like what happend in NY. I've never got the chance to say this but to all of the victims and the victims families I'm so sorry for your loses, I know that they all are in heaven watching upon you and wishing you the best down here. To Bin Laden you can run from us but you cant run from God, I dont care what you say no God would what you to murder thousands of people. There will be judgement day for you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I can remember September 11, 2001 so well. I was a freshman in high school and it was my sixth day of school. That morning, I was sitting in History class, just trying to listen to the teacher when suddenly; another teacher came in the room to tell everyone what had happened. We just heard that there was a plane crash so my teacher was hesitant to stop class and turn on the television. The buzz was heading around school but no one could imagine what was really going on. My teacher turned on the television after she had finished her lecture and we all watched one of the Twin Towers pour out insane amounts of smoke. We had no idea that it was not an accident. The only thing we could do was watch and hope that everything would be alright. Then the unimaginable happened, a second plane hit. We were all in shock, not knowing what to think. I, being so na?ve, thought that it was just a bad day for flying. We watched diligently as the first tower collapsed. Shortly after, the second one fell too. What a horrific sight. The word that so many people were throwing out was one I didn?t recognize. Terrorist? What was that? And why were so many people scared of it? I got out of class a hurriedly went to my next class not understanding what was really happening. Word had gotten around quickly, and as I got to my next class, I was told that another plane had hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. I was a nervous wreck because my step dad was at work in Arlington which was close by and I was scared for him. I hoped that he was fine but still had no clue as to why all of this was happening. We were let out of class early and I noticed my best friend out in the locker commons. She was balling her eyes out so I quickly ran over to her to see what was going on. She told me, between sobs, that her dad had been working at the Pentagon for the day and she and her mother had tried calling him but they both could not reach him. Thank goodness later when she got home, her dad had called her mom back and he was absolutely fine. At the time, I had no idea what was going on, I just knew that things were absolutely not right. The rest of the day went by pretty slowly as I continued to think about what had gone on in the morning. The teachers kept talking about this tragedy and I felt a little guilty because I was not affected because I had no idea what had gone on and why. So many people were crying and I just seemed to have forgotten about it by the time school was over. I met my sister, Mary at the car after school. When Mary approached the car, I noticed she had tears in her eyes. When we both got into the car she said ?God, this is so terrible.? I simply asked her, ?Why?? She looked at me like I was some inhumane being, but I just didn?t understand. She would not talk to me for the rest of the day. When I got home, my mom was there and she reassured me that my step dad was fine and that he was on his way home. We watched the coverage because it was the only thing on, every channel. She cleared about all of my confusing about everything that went on. I was disgusted. Even to this day I have no idea as to why someone would want to purposely hurt thousands of innocent people. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I watched with a smile creeping across my face as my four year old daughter played "Bat-man". Her world was chaotic with the destruction of a villain until her hero arrived on the scene to rescue her. Bat-man . . . it had been so long since I had been a part of that fantasy world my daughter was rapped up in that day. It was a world where there was always a villain that could be seen, and the heroes were super-sonic. One or two would always save the day and smiles would spread across the faces of all victims. They would all cheer and the heroes and heroines would go off to prevent another catastrophe. As I sat and replayed the events of September 11, 2001 in my mind, I became painfully aware of the difference in the two separate worlds my daughter and I live in. Yet, the more I thought about it, the more similarities I've found in the two. Although it seemed at the time that the villains on that dreadful day were faceless and invisible, within a very short time we knew every attacker on board those planes. There has not been a more chaotic day in America since I can remember than the day all work stopped and total strangers joined hands and prayed for our nation as we watched the events unfurl in front of us on local, national and international television stations. Almost like a cartoon extravaganza where all the Super-Heroes worked together to fight the evil forces that had attacked Gotham City, we watched as literally hundreds of men and women in every walk of life, became our nation's Super-Heroes as they ran into burning buildings, doctored and cared for total strangers, and wept as they tried to find people they did not know by a single snap shot. Police officers who took family and friends from place to place to try to identify loved ones who had passed away in the attack, and held them while they wept as yet again they found no clues. My hat goes off to them. The firemen who worked tirelessly to find a trace of life in the rubble. My heart is filled with pride to have such men and women as a part of our nation. The three men who saw the necessity of a flag being flown at the site as if to say. . ."we may be down, but we're not out. And we will be up again!" The ordinary folks who did what they could . . . things like making coffee for the men, bringing meals, donuts or juice to help keep them going. The ones who couldn't do much so they stood by and shouted encouraging words, and those who whispered prayers for the safety of those working at ground zero. Then there are the volunteers who flew, rode trains, buses and drove to New York to give those exhausted workers a break (whether they actually left ground zero or not). Although this is by far the end, I would like to mention one more group of people I consider my heroes. They couldn't go, they may not have had money, clothes or food to send, but I don't know how many thousands of candles, lights, flags, flowers, banners, bumper stickers & etc. I've seen since that day. I know I will never, ever be able to meet all my real-life heroes, but I hold you in my heart. I honor you. America. . .you are my hero. When the very essence of what we stand for and live by was attacked, it sent us to our knees but instead of crumbling there, we prayed for strength and got back up to show the world that we are still Proud to Be Americans. For now I'll let Candace go on in her fantasy world with Bat-Man & Robin, Spider Man and Wonder Woman, but I can hardly wait for the day I can tell my little girl about the day every real-life hero in America stood together to fight a real-life evil force and we won! Tell us your story: It was my second day on the job as the new Training Specialist, and I was sitting with a upper-level manager being briefed on what their division did. The phone rang. He excused himself and answered it. It was his wife, who was telling him about the first plane hitting the WTC. He told me after he got off the phone, and I thought, "What a terrible accident." That was until the second call came from his wife a few minutes later. Then we both realized that this was no accident. We continued on with our meeting as best we could, not realizing the significance of what had just happened. As soon as I was done, I went back to my office where TVs were on, and everyone was standing around looking at the images of the burning towers. It was unbelieveable. When the towers collapsed, the whole day became surreal. I felt a sense of sadness and of rage. I also knew that this was the start of war. I thought, "When they figure out who did this, it will be bad for them." My wife called, saying "They're using our own planes against us!" She urged me to come home right then, and I now wished I had, but it was my second day on at a new job, and since no one else was leaving, I was afraid to leave. The rest of the day was basically useless. I went out in the field to observe an appraiser work on appraising property, and this appraiser was a HAM operator, having a portable unit in his car. Around 4pm in the afternoon, someone came on the radio, and was chatting happily about his day outdoors until someone else must of clued him in as to what was happening. He asked, "What's going on?" The appraiser and I both said it about the same time---"Boy is he in for a shock." I remember riding around with that appraiser for a couple of hours more, and unbelievably, I saw, freshly spraypainted on a wall near a freeway entrance ramp, "Die you American pigs." I couldn't believe it. The enemy was among us. Like any patriotic American, I would have liked to meet up with that person right then. I work only a few miles from Love Field, and I drive directly under DFW airport's southern flight paths (Hwy 183). I will never forget how empty the sky looked. We are used to having quite a few commercial airliners flying around. The sky was clear, and I could only imagine that this was what the sky looked like before man had created airplanes. As I was standing outside at the end of the day, talking to some fellow employees, I heard jet engines. I knew nothing was supposed to be flying, so I spun around to see 2 F16s zipping across the sky over downtown Dallas. At the end of that week, while planes were still grounded and the skies were clear, I saw a small private propeller plan pass overhead heading southwest near my house in Fort Worth. I thought that was odd, since there should be no planes in the air. Before I finished that thought, 2 F16 screamed over the trees in pursuit of that plane, and of course caught up with it in seconds. 911 was a major shock to me, and I worry that Americans will forget how significant an event that was in our history, allowing ourselves to be lulled back into a complacency that could allow another event like 911 to happen. I had woken up, gotten ready for school, got in my moms car and we wre not even a block away, when suddenly on my favorite radio station hte horrible announcement came on. I was trembling with fear, as i remembered that my Grandparents had just left for a vacation in New York. I still went to school that day, but we wrent required to do any work. We sat at our desks, Eyes glued to the TV screen. We watched the towes collapse, over, and over again. A few of my classmates were crying because they had found out that one of their loved ones had perished in the WTC. I joined them, in fear that my Grandparents were lost as well. The day was a blur from then on, but a few days later i remember as well as yesterday. We were dropping my friend off at home and afterwards we drove past This house that had a sheet posted to the garage door, that said "God belss America". Cars were stopping to sign, and we stopped as well. we still had no word from my grandparents. I walked over to the sheet, and signed: "God be with you all"and "i love you grandma and grandpa" Then i burst into uncotrollable sobbing on the way back to the car. Tell us your story: I remember September 11, 2001- I was going into Mrs. Hines third period class, and Mr. McCann (our principle) came over the intercom and informed the school of the recent terrorist attacks. Being somewhat sheltered, I didn't know what "the pentagon" was, or what city "the twin towers" were in. What I remember most about the day was being really scared of what would happen next. I had never even imagined that anyone would attack the United States of America. My best friend at the time had a brother in the military, and we both panicked that he would have to go to war. Overall, it was an eye opening experience for me. Leading the sheltered life that I had, I wasn't aware of all the outside world, and what kinds of relationships we had with them. My life had definitely changed since the incident. I have been exposed to so much- I began to watch the news, and stay posted on current events. I believe I became closer to God, and I told the people that were most important to me how much I loved them (family and friends) just in case I were to never see them again. I think filled me with more patriotism, and I was very proud to be an American. I also became very interested in raising money for the American Red Cross, and I co- started a fundraiser at my school. I believe that the innocent people as well as the should be remembered, but most of all, I believe that the firemen the rescue squads should be remembered as well. So many of them lost their lives in an effort to save fellow Americans. Their job is very dangerous, and it took much courage to enter those towers and fight to find dying people. But don't get me wrong, the innocent people of September 11, 2001 should all be kept in our hearts forever. I have much more respect for the flag than I ever did before. I think it symbolizes so much more to Americans then it did before the attacks. It shows that as a nation, we were able to overcome attacks from foreign lands, and that instead of destroying us, it brought each one of us closer together. It shows that our country is not easily torn down, that we are strong and only become stronger through the pain. Flying the flag should fill an American with pride, for we do live in a great country! My teacher turrned on the TV in her classroom and we saw what was happening. We saw te video of the Trade Center Towers and the plane crashing into them. It was unbeleiveable. I didn't see why they couldn't have told us sooner because we found out anyway. We found out when we got home from school. I guess they didn't want us to get worried because some students had parents or relatives in the World Trade Center. I was very surprised then. When I got home, I turned on the TV right away. I was shocked. My life hasn't changed much since September 11. The atmostphere in schools and around the United States has changed a great deal. Around the United States, people are now more patriotic then ever before and the security of airports and stores have increased rapidly since September 11. In school now we have lockdown and we have student IDs. the purpose for lockdown is in case there is an intruder in the building, we can all hide and be safe. the purpose for the student IDs are so we can identify if there is an intruder. No relatives, aunts, or uncles of mine were killed on September 11 so I have nothing to worry about. My life today was the same as before September 11. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001, was my second day of student teaching at Pulaski Middle School in New Britain, CT. At around 8:40 A.M., my cooperating teacher and I had sent the kids off to gym class. Shortly after, I logged onto the classroom computer to check my e-mail and the news. When I looked at Cnn.com, the graphic of the plane hitting the first tower struck me-I first thought that this was a movie that was being filmed. Shortly thereafter, one of the school volunteers came into the classroom to tell me that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by an airplane, and it was at that moment that I discovered that this tragedy was all too true. As I had to teach until noon, I did not hear about the other three planes until that hour. The children were scheduled to have a class called Character Education (to be given by the PE teacher) at 2:00 P.M. that afternoon, but instead, she spoke very eloquently about the tragic events that had occurred. Driving home that day, I wanted to get home as fast as possible, as I was not sure if other attacks would occur. Listening to the radio and hearing nothing but news was shocking and surreal to me-I couldn't believe what was happening. On arriving home, I turned on the TV and watched news coverage of the attacks as I tried to grasp the dimensions of what had occurred. Later that evening, while still watching media coverage, tears began to well up in my eyes-even though I had not lost anyone at any of the disaster sites. It is my sincere hope that America NEVER forgets the events of this day-it is our responsibility to teach our children and grandchildren about this horrible day in US history and instill in them a responsibility for them to tell future generations so that this NEVER HAPPENS again. I had the radio on & heard that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. I immediately called my Mom to turn on the TV, because it just didn't sound right. Once I arrived at work, the entire building was crowded around the TV in the lunchroom. That's when I realized, this was no accident. The second tower had just been struck. We didn't get much work done that day as we all sat & cried. From a $10 donation I purchased a tee shirt with an eagle, the date & the words you will not be forgotten on it. I wore it today, on the one year anniversary, attended a mass for peace & went to the cemetery to visit the graves of my parents. My Mom died this past March, ten years after my Dad. I placed red & white flowers & asked them to watch over us. I will remember that day forever & hate the fact that my teenager was in fear today that something was going to happen again because of that awful event. I was so excited and nervous that day wondering if I would be able to remember all the different phone numbers for the different departments and whether or not I would be able to ever understand the call schedule for the residents and attending doctors.Some of the nurses were sitting in the break room and turned on the TV (which we aren't supposed have on) to see what the weather was going to be and see what was going on. I was on the phone paging a doctor when I heard from the break room, "Oh My God a plane has hit the World Trade Center. I remember thinking what in the world, did the engines fail? How could this have happened? The nurses and I stood glued to the TV wondering what was going on, what happened, and looked on in shock then here comes the second plane. That was the moment I realized that we were under attack and I said this is not the end they are going to be going Washington DC next. I remember at that moment calling my best Friend Tammy Dalton telling her to turn on her TV that we are under attack. I was scared at that moment for my children, my family, and my friends. I turned to look back in the break room and my heart broke cause while I was worried about my family I couldn't imagine the pain that the families of the victims in the planes, in the World Trade Center were going through at that moment. I couldn't concentrate on my job I wanted to stayed glued to the TV, praying that the people inside would get out safe and still wondering who, what, and why did this happen? Then the third plane hit the Pentagon and I am saying to myself " My God get the planes out of the air" and knowing that no one can know what I am saying to myself and I want to leave and go home and get my kids to feel safe at my house, but I know that I can't leave this is my first day on my new job. Then you could hear every TV in the SICU unit on. Though we were in shock and we were worried about what was going to happen next, we had patients and work to do. With working on the Surgical and Medical Intensive CAre Units, most of our patients are intubated and sedated, so they were not able to know what was happening in our world that day, some of them never lived long enough to know what happened on that horrific day that made history forever. And I wonder if that was a blessing for them or they will never know that what our country has stood for was now being under attack by someone that had a cause that none of us knew what it was. Throughtout the morning we are trying to do our jobs and watch what is going on in our country. Then it came that another plane has gone down in Pennslyvania, about 70 miles from Morgantown, so close to home and I am mortified that there are planes still in the air knowing what is going on and that we are going to be hit next. We have the TV on and turn on the radio at the desk, it's like we can't tear ourselves away from the news no matter how it was coming across to us. On the radio it is annouced that there is a bomb threat at the Wharf District, a new building that just opened up on the riverfront. I call my mother and tell her to please go get my children from school, I tell her that I love her and for her to tell my kids I love them because knot knowing what is going to happen next I want them to know how much I love them and that they are my life. I am wanting to go home, only a few more hours and I can. I continue with the rest of the day, knowing that I didn't retain very much of what my new duties were going to be. My mom called me back at work and said that the boys would be fine at school since it was safe there. When is this day going to be over kept going through my head, it's a bad dream and I will wake up and everything will be different. "How could this happen in our country? We are the symbol of freedom and hope and refuge. Why are we being attacked? This happens in other countries, it's an everyday way of life for them not here not in our country." These thoughts just kept going over and over in my mind. Finally it was time to go home, I needed to be at home and see my kids to hug them and tell them that I loved them and tell them that our freedom was being attacked, something that they wouldn't understand at the time since they have never had a reason too. I get home and they aren't here which is usually normal for them since they like to talk to their friends before coming to the house. It was now 4 pm and they weren't home yet. I am wondering where in the heck are they? I go outside and look down the road to see if I see them walking up the road, they are no where in site. I go and call a friend of thier's named Ben and ask him if he seen the boys, he tells me that they were not on the bus. So am I thinking that they are at the school and didn't get on the bus in time. I call the school and they tell me that they are not there, my heart drops, where are my boys? I call Ben again to confirm that they were not on the bus he tells me that he didn't see them. At this point I am frantic, I call the school back and ask them where are my children, that they didn't come home and they weren't on the bus. They don't know, they are going to contact the bus driver. I call the police and tell them that my children are missing, that they haven't come home from school. Ben's dad beeps in on my call waiting and ask me if I found the boys, I tell him no and that I have the police on the other line. I tell the police what they are wearing and what they look like, they tell me they are coming over. I then call my mom and ask her if she picked the boys up and she says no. I tell her they are missing and I don't know where they are at. AT this point I am hysterical and for a moment I know how the families of the WTC, the pentagon, and Flight 93 are feeling. The police offiecer shows up at the house to get a picture of the boys and ask me if I had any idea where they would be. AT that moment the phone rings and it is Stephanie with Kelidoscope asking me if I was going to pick up the boys are were they going to ride the bus home? I remember screaming in the phone " Where are my boys?" and she tells me that they are at Riverside Kelidoscope after school program. I had signed them up for it but didn't know that they were accepted into the program. I go outside and tell the officer where they are and she tells me " Go and get your boys and hug them". I sat down and cried, I cried for the the my children and I cried for what was going on in our great country and I cried for the families and how they must be feeling at this moment. The rest of the evening was me and the kids glued in front of the TV watching and hoping and praying that there are survivors of this horrific acts on our country. They say that crying is good for the soul, well I am not sure if that is true or not but I know that if it is then our country's soul wept and still weeps. One year later and my heart still weeps for the victims or rather for the heros that gave their life for the freedom that this country has stood on for all the years that I have been here. I thought he was joking, and I hung up the phone. When I turned the t.v. on a few minutes later, I saw pictures of the plane entering the tower, and them falling down. I started to shake, and called my husband at work. I cried all day, while watching the coverage. Around one p.m. I went up to Oakville Elementary, and asked if I could look in the classroom ( my son was in first grade). I saw him , and I left, carrying my 4 1/2 year old. When Haley came home from 1/2 day kindergarten, she asked, once again, what was wrong, and I still had no answer. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: A friend and I were traveling to Belgium to visit her daughter, who is married to an Army officer. We had been commenting on the number of Arabs in the airports and how rude they were on our first flight out of Charlotte, NC. We had never seen so many Arabs gathered at airports like this before. Not til we arrived at NATO headquarters did we receive the news from a small transistor radio on her daughter's desk. People were running in the halls and at first were told we may not be able to leave the NATO headquarters. We were devastated and frightened...wondering if we would be able to get back home to North Carolina. It was later in the day before we saw the news on CNN at her daughter's home. It was shocking to watch the twin towers fall and we were overwhelmed with disbelief. How could this happen to America? Our hearts were grief-strickened for the families and friends of those lost. We were allowed to travel later to Rome, Italy and were greeted warmly by the people once they could hear we were Americans. In all the churches and cathedrals we visited, prayer books were full for America and the tragedy. We were touched by their compassion. It was a week later that I was scheduled to come home...which happened to be the day flights were allowed back to America. Needless to say, because of security, I missed my flight out of Gatwick Airport in England. A lot of Americans were stranded there, and I could not find a hotel to stay the night. So I ended up spending 24hrs in the airport, sleeping in a chair, clutching my suitcases with numerous other passengers. I met a young girl from Bulgaria, whom I believe God sent to be my guardian angel that night. She definitely was a blessing! When I got on the flight the next day(one seat was left), I ended up sitting beside a man who was from Sawmills, NC....a town next to my community! And when that plane landed in Charlotte, there was shouting and clapping throughout the plane. I kissed the ground when I got off the plane, which a lot of others did also. One woman passed out when she met her husband. I had never been so thankful in my life and will never forget the experience. He pulled me into the living room and put me in front of the TV. Not 1 minute after that, the second tower got hit. We sat there in silence, we were shocked, and then the fright set in. How many people are still in the tower, where will then strike next. After that we started getting the story that planes had crashed into the towers, the Pentagon, and in to a filed in PA. I for the first time felt unsafe in the US. Our strong nation is being attacked. This strong nation that is the home of the free and brave. I went to work and it will be a sight I will never forget. In rush hour traffic on the highway, I looked behind me to see every single car had their headlights on for miles at 8:30 in morning. It made my heart skip a beat and realize, these terrorist's just managed to make a nation stronger than it was before. I drove to work worried, and proud at the same time of the nation I live in. As I sat down at my desk at work, I found there were many people who where afraid to be in a building that day. My boss had asked me if I would feel better being at home. I stayed. As I walked around that day, there were T.V.'s on people on the phone trying to get a hold of loved ones to see if they were okay. Working for a large Life Insurance and Investment Company, I started to realize how this would effect us. Many of the agents had lost life long clients that they had built a trusting relationship with them and their families, many of our agents were based out of NY and waiting to see if they would hear from their loved ones. I then realized how important Life Insurance had become. I was in an industry that had been able to touch some families lifes in a way of securing what they have and protecting them. I came to find out that within 2 weeks our agents worked to meet with each family that had lost a loved one. There were fathers, sons, wives, husbands, daughters, mothers.... Our company paid out 90 million dollars in benefits within that time and still kept going. While other companies argued that it was an act of war, when it was not. It made me feel that I helped to give something to familes that would make them worry about one less stress. They now had to deal with their loss and how to get on with their lives and cope. We at least took the stress of money out of their life so they may grieve and start their healing process. I went home each night and turned on the radio and listened as they found remains one by one and how many people still had hope their loved ones would be found. I continued to grow more angry with these Terrorist's, and how they hurt such innocent people and the pain and fright they went through as the buildings crumbled beneath them. My heart went out to each of them in their last moments. The firefighters that will never again be the same, and their nightmares, from what they had to pursue. A city that is such a part of American history that had some important part taken away. Today a year later, I cried all the way to work, because behind me in rush hour, every car behind me had their lights on. This nation will be stronger, but we will never forget, and will always be aware that our freedom in priceless and we fight for it. To all the men and woman that fight everyday in our military and on our streets, thank you, we all stand behind you and will always appreciate the sacrifices that you have promised to make to keep our nation safe. Then all of the sudden I heard that a plane had flew into the World Trade Center. At this time I did not think to much of it, but by the time I got to work another plane had hit the other tower. Then the whole office watched on TV the events that unfolded that day. Even though I am very far from New York, I felt like I was in the middle of everything with them. All I wanted to do was get my 2 children and husband and go home and spend all night holding on to them. Title A name given to the resource September 11 Digital Archive Stories Description An account of the resource This collection is the bulk of the archive, representing the reactions and experiences of thousands of individuals beginning in 2002. 911DA Story 911DA Story: Story Tell us about what you did, saw, or heard on September 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a currier for Federal Express. Each morning I get into my big white truck and drive around the same area delivering packages. On Sept. 11, 2001 I was driving into an undustral park. It was just like any other day. Since I pretty much go to the same places every day and I have become friends with the people that work at these places. I don't remember what the exact time was when I got to the second stop but it must have been close to 9:15. The man there looked stressed and not himself. He told me that two trains had collided with each other under the world trade building and it was going to fall over. Being a currier means that I have a time scheadual that I need to stay on so I didn't think too much about it. I thought it was some communter type accident. The next stop I went to the people were not out front and I had to call out for them. After a few minutes this women came out, signed the clip board and ran back down the hallway. Most people say hello and goodbye but she said nothing. I went to my next stop and the man there said that it wasn't trains that hit the tower but a plane. I asked him if he knew anything else and he said it was on fire, but under control. I should explain that this kind of thing happens all the time where people will tell me the news that happen. I hear about earth quakes, traffic accidents, snow storms, shootings, and things that are the top stories in the news. So I still didn't have a since of urgency. Everything was still as normal as it is everyday but people seem to be missing. I got to the last stop in this area and there was no one there. I waited for about five minutes and left. Now things got strange. I see the same traffic every day. From where I was at that time I needed to drive about five miles to a big office building. There seemed to be no traffic at all. It was like a holiday. I just thought it was luck to be able to get where I was going without all th traffic in the way. At this building I had about five stops. The first stop at his building I went to a office on the second floor. The lady opened the door and five people were standin in front of a TV. I couldn't see what they were watching but they all looked worried. No one spoke. The lady signed the clip board and I left. On the third floor the first office I went to had the doors open and about thirty people were standing there looking at a TV. I had to get past them to deliver a letter and when I got past them I saw, for the first time, the TV screen and the smoking building. I don't ever get a chance to just stand and talk. On this day I didn't move for about five minutes. Thirty people and me, standing there looking at he screen not saying a word. I think both planes had hit both towers. I don't believe anyone could understand what was going on. I did have to leave. I had to have all the packages delivered by 10:30 am. I had to get to another office building and finish. I have a computer, communication system in my truck so I sent a message to the dispatcher and asked for any details. It was a five minute trip to the next building so there was time for him to respond. His message was, "There are things happening and detail will follow." This message was not sent to me but to all the 86 curriers from the station I work at. When I got to the first stop at this office building The lady told me that a plane had crashed into Pentagon Mall. Many people were killed and the fire was out of control. I started to move faster so I could finish. When I got to the next office, which was a big company, things got really strange. As soon as I walked in there was an announcement that the office building was closing. Never heard that happening before. Everyone was leaving. This was an government office that dealt with contracts. I had four more stops. When I went out to the truck there was a message that I thought I would never see. I have worked in snow storms, ice storms, really scary thunderstorms with lighting all around me, but never did anyone at Fed Ex seem to think there was any danger. The message said, "From Memphis, All Curriers in Washington D.C. area are to stop what they are doing and return to the station. You are not to deliver any more packages, but return now." We don't get messages from Memphis, where the National headquarters are. I did deliver the last of my packages which took only a few minutes and started back to the station which was about ten minutes away. Traffic had changed. The streets were filling up and people were driving fast. If you drive everyday like I do then you can notice things like this. I got decided it would be a good idea to get back fast. When I got to the station, which is a big open warehouse you have to drive in, only one door was open. My manager was there but also many strange people I have never seen before. I never asked who they were but later found out they were Fed Ex security to examine all the packages that the curriers brought back. I had none so I got in and got out. I drove home towards Washington so I was drivin against the traffic. By now it was almost bumper to bumper going the other way. That was my day. One side not to all this. As a History major I had a desire to somehow be linked to the events that happen that day. The way I am linked is in a sad way. Everyday I drive to a biotech company. It is a large place that has extra security now. But since the events of September 11, I deliver human tissue and body parts to them that are from the towers for DNA testing. Everyone in the station knows when I do this cause the boxes are white with yellow tape that says evidence on and are marked, "Medical exmainers office, NY. NY. Everyone gathered around the TV as the story unfolded, then the phones started ringing as friends and customers called in to ask if we had heard about it. We released the employees to go home but no one left. As many as were lost I am still suprised there weren't more, considering the number of people that worked in and around those two buildings. Today (9/11/2002) we organized a remember our heros day and had a nice crowd, raising over $1,000.00 for the Fort Scott rural fire district.
