Tell us your story: My story isn't as heartbreaking as those of the New York Fire Department or as tragic as those who lost loved ones in the attacks on September 11th, but it is nonetheless my story. I live in a small town about one hour west of Chicago where nothing extraordinary ever seems to happen, but the attacks changed that, as well as the lives of everyone around the world. Never again will I take my safety in this country for granted. The day started out like any other, I got ready to go to class at the local community college about 15 minutes from my home and was waiting to be picked up by a friend when I heard the news. My dad called from work to say that he had heard a plane hit the one of the World Trade Towers and to turn on the television. My first reaction was that it was just a tragic accident and that only a small plane had hit the tower. By the time I turned on the t.v. the second plane had already hit and my mom and I rushed upstairs to turn on that t.v. because there was a terrible glare on the t.v. we had first turned on. At that time my friend rang the doorbell and I told her what had happened. We both went upstairs to watch the t.v. with my mom for a few minutes before we had to leave. We all just stood there, none of us speaking, we didn't know what to say and I don't think any of us truely understood the full implications of what was happening. Those few minutes passed quickly and before we knew it we were running late and had to tear ourselves from the t.v. The ride to the college was unreal. Every radio station we turned on had news of the attacks and terrorism was being hinted at. While driving to the college the Pentagon was hit and fear went through my body. It was so scary to know what was happening but not being able to see it or know what was going to happen next. A mile or two before we reached the college we had to stop at my friend's aunt's house to drop off some Mary Kay makeup and while we were there the first tower fell. We were speechless and all I could think about was the people who didn't make it out in time. By the time we reached the college it seemed like everyone we talked to knew what was happening and none of us felt like being in class. We all just wanted to find a t.v. and watch the tragedy unfold. When our teacher arrived she was completely clueless as to what had happened and all of us started talking at once to explain the situation. After hearing the news she wanted to be near a t.v. as badly as we did and she canceled class so we could find a t.v. on campus to watch. It only took us a few minutes to find a t.v. and the one we found was located in the center of one of the halls and already a ton of people had gathered around it. It seemed like all the teachers had canceled classes and every seat in the area around the t.v. was taken. It became standing room only and there was no room to get by anyone. My friend and I watched for awhile and then decided to find a less crowded location where we could sit down. We spent the better part of two hours in the cafeteria watching t.v. and waiting for our next classes to begin. My class started on time and this teacher wasn't as sympathetic as the last. We had class, but everyone was distracted and learning algebra just didn't seem important. I couldn't wait for class to be over so I could go home. I just couldn't believe what had happened and was thirsty for more news. Class eventually ended an hour and fifteen minutes later and my friend and I headed home. The rest of the day was spent talking about the attacks with my family and keeping a vigil over the t.v. I never lost anyone in the attacks, but my life changed forever in just those few moments on the morning of September 11th, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was snug in my bed in San Jose, California, thousands of miles from the site of the unfolding tragedy. I grabbed for the ringing phone, my boyfriend's voice came through the line, yelling, "Turn on the TV, turn on the TV." My response coming from an unawakened mind, was, "Stop yelling, I was asleep. What's wrong with you?" I turned on the TV but the pictures didn't make sense and I didn't want to comprehend what my favorite news announcer was saying. My boyfriend's brother, Don, was a commerical airline pilot living in Maryland. His route on Sept. 11 was to begin in Washington, D.C. His wife didn't know if he was still in transit to D.C. as a passenger or if he had already left D.C. as a pilot. Cell phones became necessaties that day. My boyfriend called one of his five siblings on his cell, I called another on my cell, while he and I were connected on our land lines. We contacted all the possible sources of information, which at that point yielded nothing. Don didn't always remember to turn on his cell phone; we prayed that was the case this day. Hoping for an update from his sister in Pennsylvania I called her again. Just as we began our conversation the Pennyslvania crash was announced. I said, "Oh, Kathy, something's happening near you." Having heard a loud noise she ran outside. The sky was beginning to fill with black smoke. She assured me she was okay. It was after 2:00, my time, before we had news on our pilot. He was in flight to South Carolina when he was ordered to put down immediately. Don was safe. As my 12 and 16 year old daughter's left for school that day they expressed their confusion at my fear and tears. Unfortunately, by the time they came home that afternoon they understood, and felt the same as I. By God's grace, I didn't personally know anyone who was injured or killed that day; my heart still aches for those who did. She immediately told me a plane had just flew into one of the WTC towers. In disbelief, I turned on the television in time to see the second plane hit. Having grown up in Connecticut, I visited the WTC several times during school trips. I can still remember taking the large elevators to the observation deck with tall glass windows overlooking the entire city, and beyond. Watching those buildings fall, knowing there were many people still trapped inside, was heart wrenching. During my military career, I actually worked in the Pentagon. I had always thought that was one of the safest and well protected buildings to be in. It was quite a shock to see that building also damaged. I'm so proud of the passengers and crew on flight 93 who had the courage and determination to prevent that plane from hitting it's intended target. They willingly risked their own lives, thus saving the lives of others. I also have so a lot respect for the men and women who had the horrific task of recovering the remains, working round the clock. I still can't comprehend just how cruel anyone can be - to use our own passenger planes with innocent people onboard as weapons in our country. I pray it will never be repeated. May God bring comfort to the family and friends who lost those they love that day and help them move on with their own lives. God bless the USA. A co-worker asked me to come over by his desk to see this picture of the World Trade Centers. As we watched the news coverage of the first tower up in smoke a second plane came in. I couldn't believe my eyes. Who on earth could be so heartless?? And why?? After awhile I went back to my work checking the news periodically only to find out that a plane had also hit the Pentagon and another had crashed somewhere in PA. I went home that day for lunch just to verify what I had saw on the websites. It just didn't sink in. Not until my 3 year old asked my that evening why someone would do that. I cried trying to explain to him what had happened and that there are some very bad people out there that had killed a lot of innocent people. Every now and then he builds two towers with his Legos and again asks why someone would fly planes into those two buildings. It scares me that he remembers and I only hope that I explained things to him without scaring him. I again cried today remembering all the people that lost their lives a year ago and all the family that is left to grieve their loss. Tell us your story: I am a second grade teacher at a Charter school in Louisiana, so on September 11th I had no idea of the tragedies that were taking place in our country. My assistant stepped out of the classroom, and she heard the news. I thought she was crazy when she came back into the classroom and told me that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been hit with terriorist planes. I told her that she must have gotten wrong information, because "that is impossible!" Boy, was I wrong. I went on with the day, not telling the children of the horrible events. I went straight home to get the right information, I thought. I cried all night, and still to this day I cry everytime I think about 9-11-01. My husband asks me why I watch the shows, why I read the books, and why I still let it bother me so much. I would feel guilty if I didn't let it bother me so much. See ya' in the summer." Needless to say, I had no idea how profound an experience we were all in for. My husband had awakened me with a freightening tone in his voice. Something bad was happening and I couldn't understand what he was trying to tell me. He turned the T.V. up and I saw the first plane that hit the tower still smoking, then it dawned on me that we were seeing people being killed. Then the second plane hit just after he left for work. I was preparing to go to work myself when my friend called me to tell me that our home office contacts in Stamford, CT could not be located. (some of which had been working out of the trade center in New York). I tried franticly to reach my son in D.C. to no avail. (my friends son was in the same dorm as my son - they were next door roomies.) Her son managed to call and tell her that the Pentagon had been hit, and everyone was in a panic to know what they do. She told him to try and find my son to have him contact me and let me know that he's alive and still kicking. Then the phone lines were cut off - no one could call in or out except emergency persons. For 6 of the worlds longest hours we could not find him. Finally, a friend of ours who worked in the Pentagon called to let us know that she had checked on the boys and they were fine. The school was on lockdown and they were given instructions on evacuation and safety procedure in case of emergency. Thank GOD they kept clear heads and were able to survive to finish out the school year. Little by little, they told of the fear and anxiety that they went through. Even today, they still have a hard time believing that some peanut gallery of nuts would have the lack of judgement to attack the U.S.A. So do I. At about 8:55 i received a call from one of the wives of a co worker stating a plane had just hit one of the towers. We were all turning on radios and calling people to get information. We didn't know if we were at war or what, we were all terrified of not knowing. Our payroll manager had a son who traveled alot for his business and she was trying by phone and e-mail to get ahold of him to see if he knew anything. By now the second and third planes had hit at the forth was in flight. First we heard it was going be shot down then we heard it had crashed in shanksville, Pa. Our payroll manager still had not gotten ahold of her son, so she left for lunch to be with her husband. I got a call from her after 11:30 or so and she was crying, her son Mark Bingham was on flight 93 and the plane had gone down. We all were heartbroken for her and her husband Jerry, But it was some comfort for them knowing that there son went down a fighting hero and we thank them "all" and will always remember the Hereos of Flight 93. The news is always on in the morning while I sleep in, and only do I pay attention if something strikes my interest. Yet I was especially sleepy that morning as I vaugely heard something about a plane crash. "How horrible, an accident..." I remember thinking as I dozed back off, wanting to enjoy every last moment of sleep that I could. Ten minutes later I heard that the second world trade center tower had been hit by another plane. "This was no accident," I thought to myself as I jolted up in bed. All I could do was stare at the television and wonder what was happening. Being all alone in the room, I felt more alone than I ever had in my life. My next thought was, "Oh no, what will they do next?" Feeling very alone and vulnerable I picked up the phone and called my sister to talk to her about it. She hadn't heard yet, so I told her what little I knew about the situation. From that moment on, I was watching television for the next 16 hours, trying to get some kind of understanding as to what was happening. The rest of the day all I could do was wonder things like "Why?", "What next?", and "Who did this?". Waiting for answers and not getting any was the most difficult thing. As an American during peace time, it was incredibly trying for me to understand the motive of the terrorists as well as the vulnerability the United States was experiencing. Never again will I feel totally safe and secure. I thought our country was invinsible and untouchable. Although I was wrong, I know that the United States comes closer than any other nation can. We were just about to go to our next class, when a pera-pro came into our room and told Mrs. Pekink to turn on the T.V. That was when the 2nd plane hit. My eyes filled up with tears. I couldnt comprehend why on earth someone would do this. I was shocked and knew that right then and there our freedom was taken away from us. I knew that we were going to WAR.. Who ever did this to us, they did this to get us to break down. They hit us hard and good. But, I for one am NOT going to let that play apart in my life. I am not going to let these terroists run my life. I will remember this day forever, but I am not going to not go to school or work or go out of the house just because of what happened. I came home, had a quick conference call with a client and hopped in the shower before heading down to a 9:00 AM meeting at Sears Tower. I flipped on the TV to watch CNBC while I got dressed and the first plane had just hit. I remember how small it looked. People were speculating that it was a private plane of some kind. I remember thinking 'what kind of idiot flew into that building' and 'i wonder how far the market will go down because of this stupid thing'. How wrong I was. I saw the second plane hit live, like so many of us. Total shock. I couldn't stop crying. And I still cry a lot now. Whenever I think of the magnitude of it all. I spent the next 48 hours glued to the TV, phone and internet. Any means possible to get more information. Most of my family is in New York and my brother is in Boston. The phone lines were all down out there. Somehow we all had the same inclination -- if we can't make long distance calls, at least we can get on line. And slowly slowly slowly we all found eachother. By two or three that afternoon we had accounted for the immediate family. With each hour after that the circle would expand a little further, as news of safe friends and family members and loved ones trickled in. By Wednesday morning I was breathing a huge sigh of relief. "At least we are the lucky ones. All present and accounted for". I spoke too soon. Several hours later I received a call from a friend in Seattle telling me of another friend who had just started working for Cantor several weeks earlier. "Carl's not accounted for", he said. The next phone call was from my five year old niece. The F-14's were patrolling near their house in Riverdale, the sirens were non-stop, the ash was blowing as far North as 235th Street and she wanted to know where I thought the rest of the bad guys were. I lied. I said they were all dead. That night I tore myself away from the news to run to the supermarket. My meeting had been rescheduled for Thursday (the first day that Sears Tower would be re-opened) but I told my clients that I did not intend to be there. Everyone wanted to meet at my loft instead. I figured it would be nice to have some pastry and stuff to serve them. I'll never forget the scene at the store. Everyone so subdued. Looking at eachother -- are you okay? Yes, I'm okay, are you okay? And so on. Like everyone else, my life has changed dramatically since September 11. I got divorced. I got a new job. I tell my family and friends how much I love them much more often. I don't worry about the little stuff anymore. I'm more measured in what I do. I still fly a lot. I'm a little more aware of what's happening around me when I travel. I cry much more easily. And don't laugh quite as hard or quite as often. And I'm much more honest with people about everything. Even my niece. I told her the truth. The bad guys are not all dead. And there are lots of them. But you have your family and a country full of people who are going to do everything in their power to make sure none of those bad guys ever do anything that will hurt you. Tell us your story: I was at my desk in The Pentagon that morning when my boss' wife called on the phone to say that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. I was able to access the CNN Web Site and my boss walked down to the General's office to watch what was to enfold on TV. Shortly, thereafter, he can running back to our office to tell us that he watched the second plane's impact. One of my office mates asked the question if another plane could attack us in The Pentagon. I argued against that possibility. Being utterly unaware of what was to happen, I told my boss that I was going to The Pentagon gym so that I could return and set up a noon meeting I had organized. 20 minutes lated the third plane hit The Pentagon. The plane headed directly for my office on the B Ring. The plane penetrated rings E,D and puched a hole through the far wall on ring C, but did not hit the B ring. The people in our office were thrown backward by the concussion of the impact, but were otherwise okay. All in our office escaped the building okay. My boss bruised his posterior in the blast. (I kidded him that I would put him in for a Purple Heart.) I was in the gym on the other side of The Pentagon. I heard and felt nothing. I only found out by watching CNN Headline News. I was able to call my wife and father at their homes to say I was OK. I walked out of doors with my gym clothes and my Pentagon badge. I watched from the North Parking area and listened to the radio for 45 minutes or so. We were ordered to leave immediately becuase we were told another plane was due in. I walked two miles north to Rosslyn and showed my badge to the Metro site manager. I took the metro back to my home in Rockville and my wife picked me up. I was at my home computer working emergency staff actions by noon. She had driven the kids to school and was on her way back to the house when she heard a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers. I raced downstairs and had just turned on the TV as she burst into the house. We watched as flames shot out of the tower and thought that this must be some awful accident. Slowly we became aware of a second plane visible in the sky and were transfixed as it hit the second tower. It became obvious this was no accident. News was coming so fast! It was hard to process the horror of what we were watching. We became aware of a third plane hitting the Pentagon as we watched the towers burn. We know people in NYC but were fairly sure that we didn't have a presonal connection to anyone in those buildings--but it FELT personal. It felt like I knew those people trapped inside and I prayed hard for them to escape. My sister and I were kneeling in front of the TV and all of a sudden I heard myself blurt out "It going down!" I am not sure how I knew but it must have been a change in the way the tower looked--it seemed to flex slightly and then just let go. We watched helpless as people ran for thier lives and other were surely lost forever. There was no question in my mind very shortly into this horrific day that terroists were at work and I was griped with fear. My husband was in India, in a city that was already tense because of friction between Hindus and Muslims. The phone rang at about 10am and I told my husbnd what was going on--he began to gather with other Americans and British citizens to watch events unfold on CNN International. Coverage they watched included videos of celebrations in Pakistan and Afganistan--people cheering the distruction of important American landmarks and the loss of American lives. As my husband passed this information to me over the phone I shared with him the information that a fourth plane had gone down in PA--its probable target in DC spared by brave passengers. I told him Air raffic was stopped and he was now trapped on the Indian SubContinent. While speaking to my husband, my sister and I watched as the second tower and all those people disintigrated. We couldn't even cry anymore. As the day unfolded and the truth about who had done these horrible things came to light I found myself feeling very restless. I felt like I needed to do something, burn off some energy. The next thing I knew I was standing in my garden in the driving rain pulling out plants that I no longer wanted. As little as three hours before those Gladiolli were no problem--but now they HAD to come out. I need to do something physical, to burn off some of the tension. Soaked to the skin, muddy from pulling out bulbs I could finaly really understand that I was experiencing greif like I never had before. Grief for all those lost lives, all those injured people, and for America's innocence. Maybe it was time to view the world differently but not like that, not at so high a cost. I realized I felt the need for vengence--a surprising need for a pacifist--but a strong need indeed. Standing there dripping and crying I recognised the fact that the world as I knew it was not the world my children would grow up in--and it made me mad. My husband made it home 10 very frantic days later--flying in a wide path around Afganistan. He got to come home--so many husbands, fathers, brothes, uncles, mothers, sisters and Aunts did not. On September 11th I had been living in Miami, Florida for 2 months and was seven months pregnant with my first child. My sister and I work carpooling to work and we heard a special announcement on the news that a plane crashed into one of the twin towers. Anyone from New York knows that that used to be nothing to be scared about since planes often went too low and barely missed the needle of one of the towers. We ignored it until they made the second annoucement a few mintes later and that's wehn we started getting nervous. By the time I dropped her off in front of her job, they had already announced the Pentagon's attack. I work only three miles from her so as soon as I got into my job, it was complete chaos. The television sets were on and we were watching the live footage. All phone lines were busy or down. No cell phones were working. You could see the people jumping from the towers. When the first tower fell, we lost all communication my sister and I even had with each other because of the volume of calls passing inside the U.S. When we got through, we were able to reach our mother who works by the Empire State Building still. We could hear the sheer terror and chaos in the background as her co-workers watched the people jumping from the windows. When the second tower fell, my mother's job finally evacuated her. After our call got cut off, we didn't speak to my mother or hear from her again until eight o'clock that night after she walked 200 block uptown to get to her Bronx apartment. All day we waited to hear from our friends because of the telephone problems. I left my job before noon because I began to experience an anxiety attack when we couldn't find anyone and we didn't know which of our friends had been there, or had been hurt. My husband's brother worked at the SouthStreet Seaport and was also unable to communicate with anyone. We watched the footage from home, and it was surreal. Like a bad car accident. You don't want to look, but you can't tear yourself away. At the end of the day, all of our close freinds and relatives had thankfully been either far away, or just plain lucky. My husband lost a close friend, one of the firefighters, a hero who went in when everyone else was running out. Another friend lost her fiance. Three days later I celebrated what I'll remember as literally the worst birthday I've ever had. We wre still miserable and depressed and it was the first news that we'd heard that my husband's friend was missing. It's been four years almost. I still have a hard time even talking about that day. I record the annual specials and tributes because I want this memory to be etched into the minds of my kids when they're older. But I don't watch them. It's still way too emotional, too close to home. Whenever I start to regret the fact that I was thousands of miles away when it happened, instead of being in the city that I had been born and raised in, I'm reminded that everything has it's rhyme and reason. Tragic and heartbreaking as it is, 9/11 had to happen to remind us of our fragility and frailty. We had to lose those lives to remember and appreciate the ones we still have. I pray for the families, friends and loved ones of those lost. I pray for the children and wives and husbands the brave heroes left behind. And I hope that twenty years from now, when two new larger towers have been standing in place of the ones we lost, that my kids and other children not yet born or too young to know the disaster we've endured may be humbled by the memory of that day. In the midst of dressing I get a call from the living room from my mother-in-law, who was visiting, I went in and saw the replay of the first airplane hitting the World Trade Center tower, my only thought was oh no, traffic was about to get stupid. I rushed to get finish dressing and jumped in the car, I was about a quarter of mile from my home when the news of the second plane hitting the tower was reported, I knew then as most of us did that we were under attack. I continued to work, never taking in consideration that maybe I should just stay at home that day. Traffic did not get stupid in fact it was just about clear sailing all the way to New Jersey, the news reports from the radio were chilling I cannot remember the exact sequence of the reports but before arriving at Teterboro I learned the Pentagon had been hit that the authorities were looking for a plane, that the South Tower hit at the World Trade Center had collapsed and that all air traffic had been grounded. As I approached Teterboro I could see in the distance the North tower still standing, it is a vivid memory one that I shall never forget. The tower had a gapping hole in it, you could see the jagged beams of the structure around the hole, smoke was billowing out of the hole upward toward the sky. The thing that struck me more than anything at that point was the smoke from a distance of about 9 miles was not black but white, had I been any closer I probably would have seen the people jumping from the windows I am glad I was not closer. The rest of the day at work was spent watching television reports and being extremely afraid which gave way in a few days to anger. That day I remember sitting in my 4th period mth class bored as anything.... There was about 10min until lunch and they got on the loud speaker and announced that there had been a terrorist attack on teh World Trade center... I gasped in horror being that both of my parents work in NYC... The bell then rang and luckily my sister drives and we had the same lunch. We ran out of school and we were driving home. I tried reaching my mom on her cell phone but couldn't b/c the lines were down in NY and she has a NY cell phone, same for my dad... However my dad had gone 2 Boston on Sept. 10 and was out of state... I knew he wasn't there but he walks in there every single morning from teh Ferry, I just couldn't get the thought out that he could'v been there. I then called my Grandma and she told me that my mom got home... my mom left 4 work late that day and never made it past the GWB, I was so relieved... When we got home we ran inside 2 see my mom in front of the TV, wut i saw b fore my very eyes was an image that i never thought i would see... people dying right in front of my eyes. We all immediatly broke down in tears. I didn't think this could be real, I thought this has to be a dream... it wasn't... Later that day we kept on getting calls 2 make sure my dad was ok b/c people thought he did work in the WTC, luckily not and that he was also away. However we did have a family friends dad die, he worked on the 101st floor of the 1st tower hit... I had just been promoted to a new position in the University and was very busy trying to learn my job. I have the opportunity to work with 2 of my sisters. I was busy at my job when my older sister came into the mail room of our department and had a terrible look on her face, she had told me a jet had hit the World Trade Center, immediately I noticed almost everyone in our Business Office was up out of their desks and running to the nearest TV. We watched as the other jet crashed and then yet another. Our worked had stopped. I also immediately thought about my 13 yr od twin daughters and their reaction, as well as safety, because I began thinking after I heard of the second jet crashing, about a terroist attack, it had finally happened. I hate doubting our government, but for some reason I always thought that if they wanted to get to us they would do anything to do so. I tried to call the school several times. The lines were busy...... I finally reached the school principal and she assured me the children were fine. and they had began counseling them on this terrible attack. The day seemed to last forever, I cried for the families and victims of the attack. As I look back on this day I still become angered saddened and disturbed thinking of this day. How could anyone be so cruel to do this????? I still cry to this day and especially on this day.
