Embarrassed, I quickly silenced my phone and went about class as if nothing had happened. Upon leaving the classroom, I checked my voicemail to see that my mother had called, hysterically crying, leaving the following message, "Oh God, the Towers... They're gone... I love you... Call me..." Never had I ever felt so alone in this world. Here I was, hundreds of miles from home during my second week of college, no family nearby, trying to get through to any relative closer to New York and failing miserably at doing so. The phones at my college were so swamped with calls that the network crashed. Finally, by 6 o'clock that night I was able to get through to my mother. Both of us still in shock, all we could do was stay silent on the phone, comforted by the sound of the other's breathing... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in one of my teacher education general methods classes that horrible morning. We had gone on a ten minute break, at which point I went to our Student Union building. The TV in the front of the building had the news on, and I didn't really think too much of it, just said there was a fire at the Pentagon. This was a four hour long class, so we got another break, and after this one a fellow student came back and reported all of the news that was happening, The Pentagon, Pittsburgh, and of course New York City. The professor let us out early (totally unheard of for that class) and I then went back to my residence hall where I was an RA. It was our job as RAs to try to make sense of this tragedy, and be resources for our residents should they require it. It was also here that I tried to make contact with my brother who goes to school in Pittsburgh. There was no phone service to many places in the area because lines were so busy. I finally made it through. That was one of the hugest sighs of relief of my life. There were a number of student prayer vigils held throughout the campus. I'm not usually big on public prayer, but I felt something drawing me there. It was the first time in my four years of undergraduate work that I truly felt unity of the student body. September 11, 2001 changed all of our lives forever, and it is not something that I will soon forget. Just like that fateful day in Pearl Harbor, or when President Kennedy was killed, or when we learned of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger, these images and memories will be etched in our brains for the rest of our lives. I was at work that horrible day when one of my co-workers came over to my desk to tell me to come down to the cafateria to look at the news because something terrible has just happened, we are under a terrorist attack. And oh my God, I couldn't beleive my eyes. I don't want to elaborate on that too much because it is still so painfull because of the lives that were lost to that unspeakable act of cowardlessness. Being a radio/television major my class mates and I were in the televesion station that the college has. What I remember the most vivid was when my father came in and explained in great detail what was going on. Instatly my father suggested to the teacher that we should be going on air with the breaking information. After that we spent the rest of the day and most of the night on air broadcasting the breaking news of the day. As hard as it was we kept replaying the scenes of the planes hitting the towers and the other information as we heard it and we also had the interviews from around campus. Tell us your story: Changes Following the events of September 11th 2002, I must make an attempt for myself to understand the changes that have taken place immediately during this presidency and in the White House. The first and most obvious, is that the security around the president, his closest advisors, and family has drastically increased. This is for no other reason than to protect the leader of our nation on his day to day engagements. Another drastic change that has occurred, is the president?s political agenda for the remainder of his term in office. There will be a more focused attempt to fight off terrorism than ever before in our nation and throughout the world. The public opinion of our nation has changed and in turn has directly impacted decisions made by the president. All of these are changes that I feel are consequential to our nation and the presidency. The security around the presidency has changed immediately because of the threat of terrorist attacks on our nations highest leaders. Since the few days after the attacks, security around the White House, known as the ?18 acres,? has drastically tightened. Pedestrians are no longer allowed to walk within several blocks with out proper identification and credentials, movement within the building has been limited, including top advisors and workers and getting on Air Force One is now a hassle to anyone allowed on. To put it mildly, once the site of one?s dream job has become, to some, the danger zone. The job itself of president has not changed since the attacks, but the focus has. President Bush didn?t have a strong platform for Foreign Policy during his election. The reason for that was because it wasn?t a current issue, but since 9-11 it has been one of the main intentions of the current presidency. One outcome of the attacks has been two new senior staff groups created by the president. They include the Homeland Security Council and the Domestic Consequences Group. These two groups focus on domestic security concerns and other economic worries. Without a shift in the importance of Foreign Policy our nation would be under severe threat and the public would be outraged. The national government and political policy of our presidents for the past ten years has been heavily influenced by polls of public opinion. After the terrorist attacks the opinion of the public was in favor to retaliate or strike back. Whether these opinions were based on the act of revenge or the justification of never letting this happen again didn?t matter. Something had to be done, and if not, the public opinion would have most likely favored the act of overthrowing the government. Citizens would agree that everything this country worked for in the past two centuries would not be taken away from us. Thanks to public opinion the president can make decisions that the nations citizens favor more easily than before, and thanks to our Constitution that is what makes our government so special. Overall, the focus of everyday policy for the president and his life changed overnight. Herein I have tried to explain the reasons for the changes that have taken place in order to understand the position that we face everyday since 9-11. I attempt now to realize that today the term President takes on a whole new meaning and respect. His important task of a promise to keep America engaged in the world has changed into a more immediate, pledge to locate evildoers wherever they may hide. For these reasons I am proud to say that I respect the life of the president and the everyday changes and events he faces for us as citizens. On Goggle Earth you can see where they once stand there now is only cleared ground the new buildings weren't yet there. I really think most American's were very affected by this. For a long time I would see flags placed all over the place on buildings, on cars on homes. One year they asked everyone to be outside with a lighted candle at a certain time on 9/11. On that morning I woke up and turned on the news like I allways do and saw one of the WTC towers on fire and heard something about a small plane had hit . Then there was a split screen with the Pentagon on fire and I understood that there had been an explosion. That`s when I thought 'we`re under attack' . So I called my brother and told him what I thought to which he responed 'Sounds serious' as he was waking himself and trying to process what I was telling him. I noticed I was shaking and hung up and got ready for work. Then there was the second plane hitting the WTC and the waiting for the next plane to hit Washington D.C. At that time my mind was on 'Alert' as my Army training started to come back to me. Even though I was discharged in 1983. My drive to work was strange as I think I was in shock and I had a near miss with a large truck. I felt 'disconnected' and had to force myself to focus. Well I made it to work and suffice it to say that I`m changed now an still find myself on " Alert" a year later. Secondly, A couple of days later there were no airplanes flying and I was making a delivery in the company van. As I was unloading I heard and felt a terrific noise from the sky above Portland and I instictivly ducked and my heart pounded ! When I looked up I saw two F-15`s that had just taken off from the Portland Air National Guard Base next to PDX. One of them was doing what apeared to me to be left and right rolling maneuvers with after burners blazing while the other was flying in a straight line. People around me were yelling " Go get 'em " and the like while others saluted as I did. They headed south and we all looked at each other and carried on with our business . Feeling Proud. Lastly, I went to my other brothers home to put up a new flag and noticed a toy Tank on the front steps with the barrel pointed at the sky. Later I learned that little Mikey , who was 6, had put it there to protect his home and his family. I write this on 9/11/2002 as I watch coverage of the memorials on TV. My fellow employees and I were gathered around the T.V. watching history before our eyes. Our customers (roofing contractors) were coming in and stopping tiere buisy day to watch with us. I couldn't help thinking this was just the beginning of somthing big that was about to happen to our glorious country. I wanted to call my parents to tell them how important they were to me. My four small children were at school and I wasn't sure if it would be safe to leave them there. I had all of these thoughts racing through my head. I remember looking at the sky alot. It was so blue and clear. There were no planes. I thought of how pieceful it seemed here in Indidana and how chaotic it must be at that some moment in Ney York. The rest of the day wnet on. I had to try and continue my daily work. I made it through the day at work only to go home and try to explain to my children what had happened. They were to young to understand how big the things that happend were. I explaind that there were alot of lives lost. Hondres of thousands of people who were at work. They couldn't comprehend the totel loss our country had suffered. I took pennies and laid them out on the table, just to give them an idea of what that number looked like. they were in amazment. Just last night (9/11/02) my daughter who is only eight said " mommy i can't sleep becasue i keep thinking about the kids who lost their mommies and daddies." I was speachless. I tried to comfort her, telling her that God would take care of everything. That event has changed my life. Everything means alot more to me now. I know how quickly somthing can be taken away. My mom always said everything has a reason. God has a plan for all of us. I try to believe, and let him (God) handle what I have trouble handling. God bless our country!! When we returned to our Data Center everyone had a shocked and terrified look on his or her faces. Just as I asked, what happen? The second, plane hit all I could scream was Oh! My God. Then you start to pray for the people that are in the building. Their families and friends cross your mind. You thank God that you?re safe. Then the plane hits the Pentagon. Panic kicks in this is to close to home. Phones start to ring, you start dialing. My husband works for the Pentagon Federal Credit Union in Alexandria, VA. I just wanted to hear his voice and know that he?s ok the line is busy. My heart Stopped beating for several minutes. Once I talk to my husband I can hear the panic in his voice just terror. I just wanted to get to my children; I start to think if I am in panic I can only imagine the fear that our children are experiencing. Tell us your story: It was a day that will live on forever I was at school and I saw my teachers baffle about something and she turned on the news my stomach dropped so low.It was like a movie but only real the first thing I did was call my dad because he is in the military he is sometime known to show up at the pentagon after I got a hold of him I called my mom she told us her friend was on her way to pick us up so we got out of school I live about 13 miles from the pentagon and I saw the smoke it was like a warzone ambulance flying bye it made me sick. We got to the gate I live on an army base called Fort Belvoir it took us 2 hours to get on they searched evey car they had guns it made me feel secure. I just want to thank every hero even my brother for being there in the time of need. Tell us your story: It was around 9a.m. when one of the tool and die makers started telling everyone that the World Trade Center had been blown-up. I thought he was just pulling our leg, but when I listened to the radio I felt a chill just run right through me. That evening I called my dad and brother to see how they were fairing, especially my brother who works in Dallas, Texas. It seemed as though they were targeting big cities. I think I cried off and on for a couple of weeks and prayed for all those innocent victims. Even though I new no one there, I still felt as though I had lost someone very dear to me. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up on an ordinary morning, it seemed, and got ready for school. As I went outside to get in the car to go to school, I noticed that the sky was clear, and that planes had left their criss-crossing smoke streams all across the sky. Two fellow students and I were creating anatomy charts in Mrs. Keller's Medical Science class. My teacher decided we could watch TV as we colored the charts, and I was designated as the one to find something educational on TV. As I scrolled through the channels, I noticed that a building was on fire, and I accidentally skipped it, but came back to it. As I turned it on CNN, I saw the building with smoke arising from it. They mentioned that an aircraft had crashed into the first tower. About 10 minutes later, as we were watching, we saw the second plane hit the second tower, and we were in shock. We stayed quiet for at least 10 minutes before any of us could mutter out a single word. A teacher was running down the hall, saying that we were under attack, and that we should watch the news. About 30 minutes or so later, I remember hearing the report that there was an explosion at the Pentagon, and possibly an explosion from a car bomb at the State Department, which turned out to be a hoax. Throughout that day, on September 11th, we watched the coverage on TV, and I was personally shocked for about 2 weeks afterwards. As I left school that day, the smoke trails were gone from the sky, as all of the planes had been grounded. Before September 11th, I believed no one could hurt the United States of America. Today, I am graduated from that high school, and that will always be the most memorable day of my high school career, and of my life. God bless the families of the victims, the victims themselves, and may God bless America. My son was crying and very upset so I spent a little more time with him at the school. I got into my car a little after 9 and turned on the radio. The disc jockeys from the local radio station were making a crack about how could a plane crash into the World Trade Center. I thought it was a joke. But the more I drove home his voice and the comments he was saying became more bizarre. He then said another plane had just crashed into the other tower and I thought what a jerk he was to be saying this....But he kept saying it over and over....I changed the station and all the other stations were broadcasting the same thing. I just sat there and could not move...after about 5 minutes I grabbed my 9 month old out of her car seat in the back and ran inside and turned on the TV...and watched and watched and watched. I could not believe it!!! Before I had my youngest child I was a videotape editor CNBC and NBC News. I had been exposed to a lot but this was unbelievable My husband who is a news cameraman was on his way to work on the George Washington Bridge when it happened. They closed the bridge immediatly after the first plane hit and he was stuck on the bridge. He spent over an hour helping the police redirect traffic off the bridge. He called from his cell phone to me and his family to tell them he was ok. If he had been in the city an hour earlier he would sure been there when they went down. He could not get into the city they were even dedying the press access to get into the city. So he came home and we just watched TV all day...Then the F15s kept flying over our house over and over again..... Being part of the 80's generation, we have not experienced very many "earth shattering" events that we will remember like we will remember September 11th. I am a runner and I had gone out for my morning run, noticing how unremarkably beautiful it was that day! It was a perfect day and it put me in such a good mood. I came back to my room and was doing my sit-ups while watching the today show. Unexpectantly, the whole mood changed on the show as they announced some "breaking news". When the put the picture of the fire from the first plane hit, the broadcasters, along with all of us at the audience were at a loss for words. I remembered being amazed that they were handling it somewhat okay, being in the same city and able to look out the window at what was happening. It was early, and being on a college campus, I seriously felt as if I was in the twilight zone and i couldn't beleive that it was happening, but I couldn't make sense of it, because I was all alone. I was scared, shocked and most of all confused. Just like all Americans, my first response was just being glued to the TV as it all unfolded and right before my eyes, I saw the second plane hit as they were doing an interview with a girl on the street right outside of the trade centers. > I had to leave then, I had to go talk to someone about it or at least make sure it wasnt a dream that I was having, cause I hadn't interacted with anyone yet that day. As soon as I went outside though,it was quite obvious and all of a sudden I was flashed into my leadership role as an RA (resident advisor) as hundreds of freshman came to me screaming that their parents worked in the Pentagon. It was absolute pandomonium and I was just in disbelief that I was living through this. It's weird to think back on it now and everything we've learned, how we have all changed and what we have done since then to build our country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September eleventh, I was an 8th grader at Marlborough High School. I remember exactly where I was, in French class. When they announced it over the loudspeaker at my school, I really didn't understand what was happening, all I really had was the crazy things my classmates were saying. I remember being worried that we were going to be attacked and that I wouldn't get to see my best friend ever again, because she wasnt in the same class as me that period. Now as I reflect back a year later, I look at how much closer our country has grown. Sometimes, something good can even come from a great tradgedy like this. And when people ask where God was during this tradgedy, I think God did all he could to prevent people from dying. God saved 28,00 people in about 52 minutes. So don't look at it that 2800 people lost their lives, look at it that 28,000 people were able to survive. And the 2800 or so people who lost their lives..are now that much closer to God. I didn't lose anyone to the September 11th attack, but that doesnt mean it didn't personally affect me. I no longer take things for granted. I say goodbye and give a kiss to my mother every morning, because who knows what could happen that day, and whether that could be the last time I see her. Our country is forever united as one, and no terroist attack can ever bring us down. We were all puzzled until we saw the horrible image of an airplane crashing into the world trade center. We were all stuned as if this was some kind of dream. No one said a word every one was procesing the words that where coming from the televishion, reporters just repeating over and over that a plan just crashed into the world trade center. The pictures of smoke, fire, dibbry, and people were flowing like a river. I was afraid, shoked, confused, and amazed. At first I didnt understand the impact of what had just happend, then to make it worst another plane flies into the other wowrld trade center building. My thoughts where all jumbled together. I began to cry people in class where beging to cry too. My teacher tried to help but thier wasnt much that he could do.The phone began to ring nonstop, people where being called down to go home, right about that time the news reported that the buildings where falling down, and that 2 other panes had crashed. One into the pentagon and the other in Pennsylvania. I felt like this was one of those murder, fast past action movies. That it was all just a dream. Until reality actually hit us we all began to talk about relatives friends, and our fellings. The day went by in a haze, every one stoped as if timed stoped all worried confused and most of all scared. I didnt know how to react to such a situation, I was petrafied, I didnt know what to say to anyone, because I didnt know how they felt. No one I knew was apart of it but some how I felt just as much grief as every one els. After the song was over the dj came on and said that the World Trade Center had been hit. The dj on that radio staion is usually a big joker so i didnt think anything of it. I hopped in the shower and got ready for school. When i was ready i sat down and turned on espn to find out what was going on in sports like I usually do in the morning and when i turned the t.v on I saw the second plane hit the other building. i realized what was going on and watched the news till i had to go to school.
