I was sitting in my history class and we were watching the news and they had a news warning and they said that the 1st of the twin towers had been ran into by a plane. We were all shocked at what we saw on the T.V. To tell you the truth I had never seen the World Trade Center until then. But, I was still shocked because for something that bad to happen was amazing. I still to this day don't fully understand why it happened but, I sure someday I will find out. I am now in the 11th grade and we still recollect about what happened on that day. First I thought it was an accident, but when I saw Tower two hit I knew that it was not. I began to cry and my oldest son asked me why I was crying and why did this happen. I had know answers for him. I was so sad for the victims, their families the fire fighters and the police officers. I felt grateful that my children and family were safe. My husband is a police officer and was at work. I called him immediately to see how he was. We were very scared. Now a year later, I sit with my three children and my oldest son who is now five, asks me, "Why did this happen," "Why would someone do this if they knew they would hurt others and that they would die?" Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had arrived back in Newark Airport from vacation at 5 pm on Monday September 10th. Little did I know how lucky I was not to have delayed my return by one day. I was driving down to the Camden area to do some fieldwork for my company and was on the Garden State Parkway when the news bulletin came on the radio just before 9 am. At first, it was reported to be a small prop plane that hit the tower and was thought to be an accident. I couldn't believe that someone would be so careless a pilot to hit such a large building. Then, a few minutes later, the report of the second plane hitting the tower came on. I could hardly believe what I was hearing. This was obviously no accident. All I could think to do was to pray for those in the towers...that they would be able to get out safely. I was thinking of the 1993 bombings, and didn't even conceive of the towers themselves collapsing. About a half hour later, the news reported that the Pentagon had also been struck. I felt numb. When the Pennsylvania crash was noted later in the morning, it was still not known that they were also on a suicide mission but had been stopped. I couldn't understand how anyone could do this. I returned back home to northern New Jersey, and as I drove back to my house, I could see a black smoke plume rising from across the river. I live only about 5 miles from the Meadowlands, and so usually have a clear view of the Manhattan skyline. That day everything was obscured by the smoke plume. I watched the news for the next three days, never turning off the TV except when I left for work, even sleeping in front of it all night. I was afraid that something else was going to happen and I didn't want to be unaware of it. I can't imagine the pain and fear of those who were in lower Manhattan that day, but I feel for them. There are some days that I still cry when I remember those who lost their lives and those who so bravely fought to save others. The police and firemen, civilians, and especially those aboard Flight 93, who sacrificed themselves so that no more unsuspecting innocents would die. Thank you to all of these heroes. The only thing that I thought about was why would someone want to do that and what did we do to deserve it. I sat with my friends in my child care class in amasment. Really I think we just want to go home to our families. I have learned alot from this and that was not to take anything for graned because you never know what could happen next to them or to you or to someone elses loved ones. As I was sitting watching television lasty night I thought that I was pretty well over it. then they showed this story about this guy who lived through it all and went home to his wife who was pregnant. I started to cry instantly and thought how scared she must have been. After everything she and her husband had gone through she had this magizine with a big picture of women and thier babies who never got to meet thier fathers because of that tradgic day. What touched me more then anything is that she wrote a song for those women who were widdowed with children. I really admire her for what she has gopne through and how she came out of it with a smile because she still had her husband. My heart goes out to all of you in your time of need and I hope that some day the world will be a decent place again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: 9/11/02: While enjoying a peaceful rest, i was interrupted by a phone call from my brother who was in school in Boston. He spoke with an almost calm tone, however, one of complete shock and revealed to me something that i wouldn't have ever dreamed of hearing in a nightmare. Having just awoken from sleeping, i didn't even believe, nor could I even grasp what grief, pain, and turmoil lie ahead. I didn't believe it until my brother made me get up and turn on the television, when the first building fell. I know that everyone can relate when I say that at that moment, I cannot even come close to describing what feeling took over my entire being. No words or tears could come anywhere near this feeling of complete shock and sadness. I was and am now, more than ever, probably the biggest fan of New York City. It's the city of my dreams, and has always been, coming from such a small town. The thought of my favorite city being attacked and buildings destroyed was one that I could not think of as a reality. I just had to visit New York City for spring break and the moment I actually saw the largest piece of actual land in the middle of downtown New York, nothing but cranes and dirt, all the disbelief and shock was released, for now it was more real than ever. This disaster has definitely given me a different look at life and the world and this change will take much time to get used to. I would like to send out my heart to all of those victims of the attack and their friends and family, as well as the entire nation. Even though I don't know anyone directly affected, I grieve and I can't describe how proud of the nation I am in its work to overcome such a destructful and difficult time in history. I walked into the living room and my grandma watching the twin towers with one up In smoke. I remember asking her what had happened because I didnt know that much about the twin towers. I didnt know that they were as important as they were. Then, I heard her start to call family and my mom who was at work to tell her what was going on. I went to finsh getting ready for school so i wouldnt be late, and she called me in. There both had been hit by now and one of them began collapsing. Many people were screaming and running down the the roads trying to call family who were in the towers but everyone was saying that nobody was picking up. My grandma started to cry, i was in somewhat shock because i didnt know how to react. I went to school and I remember pretty much the whole day we were talking bout what had happened. Now that I am older, i realize how important 9/11 was and how many lives it affected. I have never really been out of Minnesota. My story is about how something I never saw or touched, touched me so much. I sit now and watch people like Lisa Beamer on television tell their stories of heroism. As they are interviewed, they seem so strong, so calm. While I sit and cry, head in hands. I wonder if I will ever get to the point where I can even listen to these stories without crying. Lisa is so strong, so uplifting to hear. She should be the one crying, missing her husband. Instead, she is teaching us, the people who have no relation to anyone that killed that day how to be strong. September 11th, 2001 my brothers and sisters were murdered. I never met them, they never knew me, but I feel like I will mourn them forever. September 11th will always make my eyes tear, my heart hurt, and my mood somber. I was in Art class when our principle came on the loud speaker and announced that the world trade center buildings had collapsed and the cause was unknown. Now of course because we were young they werent going to tell us much, i didnt think much of it, i actually didnt realize how important this was to our country. As the day went on, most of us kids just went on with our day as a normal day, until more and more parents were coming t pick their children up from school. A few students had parents, family, or friends who worked in the WTC and we crying their eyes out. Each teacher i went to after that, all spoke of what had happened. I was beginning to get more afraid afterall. Me and my best friend Michelle babysat after school everyday monday - wed. and we were so afraid to babysit alone. My cousin Kelly had came at about 2:30 and picked us up, she was afraid for me also, she didnt want us babysitting alone. She picked us up, and brought us to her house with the 2 year old we watched 3 days a week. We stayed there and watched the news and cried about what had happened. it was so devastating. i know my story is not as tragic as those who escaped the building but i just thought id share my story because as a 14 year old going through this, we uderstood more then you's thought. my prayers are with everyone.. We have a T.V. in the dining hall where I worked, and we always keep it on CNN. We couldn't believe what was happening when someone first yelled that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11th I rose early so that I could perform my civic duty of voting in the mayoral primary before heading down to my office in Tribeca. It was, as everyone in New York on that day has since testified, a perfect fall day and after quickly voting (the turnout at the polls being unimpressive) I took the long ride downtown. It was going to be a busy day?our first staff meeting of the fall, followed by a myriad of meetings, capped by a photography exhibit party back uptown at Columbia in the evening. It didn?t seem unusual when, somewhere below 42nd Street, the train crawled to a halt and the conductor gave a typically cryptic announcement that trains were backed up ahead due to a problem at Chambers Street. Each subsequent station that we eventually reached ended up being a lengthy pit stop during which more and more passengers exited, having lost hope of ever reaching their destinations. All in all, not an untypical morning on the subway. At some time after 9 am, the train finally lurched into the Franklin Street stop. I emerged out of the subway to the sound of warbling sirens and the sight of more people than usual. Turning west on Franklin Street in Tribeca, the view south is blocked by the densely packed buildings and so, when I noticed the crowd up ahead on Hudson Street, all turned in the same direction, I only assumed that once again my access to my office would be hampered by the filming of an episode of "Law and Order" or "Third Watch." Certainly, the stillness of the crowd seemed to reinforce that conclusion. I remember now, just before I reached the corner, seeing a tall woman heading toward me, a troubled look on her face. Amazingly, I recognized her?a fellow parent in my children?s playgroup whom I hadn?t seen in years since our children are adults?and now I realize that my first impulse to stop her and say hello was squelched by her expression. Moments later, I turned the corner expecting the usual view of the twin towers, the two huge monoliths looming over the low buildings along Hudson Street. I now know that I arrived shortly after the second plane struck the tower. The utter clarity of the day, which seemed to emphasize every detail, every window, made the gaping hole and flames and billowing smoke that much more shocking. The size of those buildings and the size of the fire were terrifying?in the contrasting silence of the crowd, I immediately remembered glimpsing a fire in a high-rise (and I assumed "fireproof") apartment in Harlem some twenty years earlier and the remark of a fellow rubbernecker that he couldn?t imagine what could be feeding such flames. I finally made it to our office, where my colleagues were all staring at the fibrillated, barely decipherable images coming over the uncabled television. Two planes had struck the World Trade Center, they reported, another had hit the Pentagon. One of my colleagues, A., who had exited the subway further south at Chambers Street, was particularly upset, having seen people falling from the towers: she was terrified that the buildings would fall. A master of denial, I assured her that would not happen?more accurately, I added that if such a calamity were to occur, the buildings would not fall like downed trees. At a distance of some eight blocks from the towers, I thought we were not in any direct physical danger but at that point who knew what else might occur? The alternative of retreating to our midtown offices, adjacent to the likely secondary target of the Empire State Building, didn?t seem viable. I called my wife who was watching the calamity on television and reminded me?as master of denial I had forgotten?that our younger son?s girlfriend, E., had just started working in a law firm at the WTC a week or two earlier. Our son was frantic, trying to contact her. After getting off the phone, I told everyone to head home and we quickly, but methodically, closed the office, set the alarm and left. On the street, we joined a massive exodus north. I walked with two of my colleagues up Hudson Street, each of us trying A.?s cell phone, which wasn?t working. The farther we moved away from the twin towers, the clearer it became that many people were dying and I became increasingly worried about the fate of my son?s girlfriend. This is it, I couldn?t help thinking, this is the event?amidst so many terrifying events from the 1960s onwards?that we won?t survive unscathed. It was just too clear that many people were dying and why should we be spared in such a moment of utter devastation? And yet, while heading up Hudson, pointlessly dialing the cell phone, searching for a gap in the long lines piled up behind the previously reviled pay phones, as a historian I found myself seeking the refuge of horrible precedent: the images I?d seen offered the gruesome reassurance of repetition: the falling bodies evoking the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Fire?s plummeting victims; the already apparent devastation of downtown an echo of the lithographs I remembered seeing of the catastrophic 1835 fire that wiped out much of the built city. We stopped at Houston Street so that A. could look for her son at the public high school there. Waiting with P. outside the building, midway down the block, we noted the crowd at the corner looking south. Our trip uptown had been punctuated by continual turns southward, noting the increasing obscurity of the smoke blotting out the towers and charting, we feared, the escalating destruction. Suddenly we heard a collective, unforgettable gasp?a collected exhalation of breath punctuated by shouts and shrieks. I ran to the corner, but there was nothing to see but a massive column of smoke and dust. The unthinkable had, indeed, happened. P. headed east to try to find her way to Brooklyn and A. and I continued our trek north, turning onto the west side highway, lined by retreating pedestrians and empty but for the hollering ambulances and police cars heading downtown. We stopped at the occasional radio-blaring car, joining our fellow refugees to listen to the news?or, more accurately, rumors?about other terrorist-controlled planes, other unsubstantiated attacks. The brilliant sun, the cloudless day seemed a terrible counterpoint to the confusion and fear around us. The crowds thinned out after we passed the westside ferry. By that point, I had reached my wife via an amazingly unused payphone to learn that, indeed, we had been spared and that E. was safe. By the time we reached the southern border of Riverside Park, it was as if we had entered another world, populated by sleek rollerbladers and leisurely strollers, their pastoral sojourn only interrupted by the distant roar of jet fighters overhead, every head turning skyward to just make sure it wasn?t something else. Tell us your story: all of the inspectors had been greeting the public that day, making sure they were helped to cast their votes..when a few of us heard ..well it sounded like a car crash, but from a distance!..we didnt pay too much mind to it at first. a man with a transistor radio came in to vote and told me that a plane had hit the world trade center..at first i just looked at him like you gotta be kidding!..i then went out side and people were kinda schuffling out side and talking about the plane..I walked to my friends house and there was only one station on television.I couldnt believe what i saw..and only moments later as we watched the second tower get hit. my friend and i were screaming ..i couldnt believe it "all the people, in there" I wasnt totally out of it untill i heard that the pentagon was hit as well..that's when I was truely afraid..I thought we were all dead! I thought where is our government?..I then went as fast as i could go to the bus stop, to get my son outta school..he goes to school located down town brooklyn, not far from the bridge..I couldnt believe the smoke it reminded me of a london fog horror movie ..the smoke and debree were intense.I got my child and we hitched hiked back home I only had 5 dollars on me and all the atm's were down..a perfect stranger handed me another 5 dollars to help me and my son get home..the only car service in the area was loaded with people waiting their turn to get a ride to their homes..i had asked a man in a red car to please take my son and I home and i payed him the 10 dollars. later on..and after trying to call into manhattan,because my daughter attends high school there.mayor rudy..opened up train service ..I then went and got into manhattan...going over the bridge it was hard to see anything,and not because of the smoke but my tears wouldnt stop..I keep thinking about "all those people" i got to my daugters school to find out that had released her..even though i called and told them to keep her there .and i was coming for her..she had signed a log to where she was going..and she was alright..on the way home and finally getting into a bklyn bound train I was in the subway when building 7 fell..we had to be rerouted back uptown..well it took 5 hours to get back home ...I'm grateful that I was able to get back home...so many werent so fortuate!.The next two days my daugter and I volunteered in the armory. on lex. ave.I couldnt go back another day the mass amount of families and friends of the missing were phenomonal. but I remember 1 elderly woman who just gave out white roses! Tell us your story: "Total Recall"By Daniel Bivona Ladder 84 I wrote this letter for the following reasons: In honor of victims and country, for the healing of myself and others, and for giving recognition to the unrecognized. "Total Recall" was a term that I have never heard in my 20-year career as a NYC firefighter, but the unimaginable and unspeakable destruction of life had just happened.On the bus ride to the Staten Island Ferry, one fellow firefighter stood and led us in reciting the "Our Father." He did this to help us do our best in helping those in need. We were aware of the incomprehensible devastation we were about to bare witness to. We stood on the bridge with the ferry captain at the helm and gazed in silence at the smoke that now replaced the Twin Towers. Getting off the ferry, we were greeted by a frantic mass of people, covered in gray soot, fleeing the city. Many of them reached out to touch our coats, and a woman said, "God bless you and may He watch over you." The air and soot was getting thicker, and with each step we took, the mountain of destruction was becoming surreal. Twisted I-beams formed an interwoven web that looked like a huge roller-coaster track. Emergency vehicles were torn in half. City buses appeared to be the victims of their own bomb blasts. I prayed that I would wake up from this nightmare. We reached what is known as "Ground Zero." Time stood still as we began digging for survivors. We were asked to report to City Hall. Truck and engine officers were told to form separate lines as firefighters stood by impatiently waiting their assignments. Cut off from outside communications, rumors of more incoming hijacked planes were circulating as F-14 fighter jets screamed above the smoke. Seven World Trade Center collapsed behind us, and we were chased by an avalanche of debris and blinded by the smoke. Unable to regroup, we freelanced the burning buildings and rubble for hours, yielding no results of survivors. Exhausted and beaten, I felt empty and defeated. I questioned how it was possible to save no one out of this mass of victims.The next day my wife received a call from the wife of a missing firefighter. The numbers of the missing began to change to names. On our return, night was transformed to day under glaring spotlights. I gazed up at this mountain of rubble, and I felt helpless and small. We all held onto the hope that we would pull a survivor from this smoldering tomb of twisted steel. As we dug above what I believed was an elevator car, I envisioned in my mind opening the hatch and seeing my friend, Frank Esposito of Engine 235,saying "Dan, what took you so long?" As the dream faded, I continued to pray for hope. Two horns blasted. We were told to come down from the pile of rubble. There was danger of further collapse. When we returned, cadaver dogs were digging everywhere. The dogs seemed confused. Death was all around us.On Sept. 11 we believed that over 6,000 people lost their lives. The New York City Fire Department lost 12 percent of its men working that day. All of the rescue workers, who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others, also laid down their lives for this great country. Now my heart and eyes fill with emotion every time I hear "God Bless America." Fire Department Chaplain [Rev. Mychal] Judge, was one of the first to die. I believed it was so that he could smooth out the jagged edges of our pain. Father Judge will be at the gates of heaven to personally escort every individual in, with a smile on his face and these words on his lips: "Lord, take me where you want me to go. Let me meet who you want me to meet. Tell me what you want me to say and keep me out of your way." I was moved by the outpouring of support from everyone. I say "Thank you" to all the volunteers, some of who traveled great distances to get here. "Thank you" to all the ironworkers and wreckers. Tell us your story: As a school teacher I was in class with 9th graders teaching government.I had just put an original paper from the bombing of Pearl Harbor away when I received a text message on my phone from CNN. It read a plane has flown into a building in New York. I quietly leaned over to a student to go the the library for a tv and video connection. It was about 9:10 a.m. For the remainder of the day students in my class and school stayed glued to the TV. We watched the second plane go into the building and heard reports from the Pentagon. I sat on the heater by the window of my classroom as students watched in awe the happenings on TV. I called a friend in DC, Quannah- just 2 miles from the Pentagon. She was in the street crying with her neighbor who knew people on the American flight and flew as an Attendant for American. Quannahs' husband worked in the Pentagon but was in Korea at the time. My students didn't know what to think. Quannah cried that she heard the plane go by the house...she heard the explosions. I could still hear explosions in the background as we spoke. Students kept coming in my room. Classes congregated in rooms where there were televisions. A room that normally had 30 kids now had 50. They were quiet and respectful, but where full of questions as to why would it happen. Kids checked the internet about the Pentagon and found it had been dedicated on September 11. One boy was very upset, yet couldn't verbalize why... he came back the next day and told me his Aunt worked at the Pentagon and made it out safely. I got dressed and prepared for school. At the time, I was a senior in high school, but I was also in a work study program with the Department of Defense, so I had to make sure I looked nice to go to work as well. The day continued on as any school day does, listening to teachers, trying not to fall asleep, the usual thing. I can not even remember exactly where I was when I first heard rumors about a plane. The funny thing was, in high school, the administrators didn?t like to tell you much of anything, so rumors were flying and different stories were formed. I can?t even remember them. Even now, 3 years after that fateful day, my memory hasn?t unclogged itself enough to understand what was going on. Because I was a work study, I got to leave school early each day of the week to go to work. As rumors flew, I chatted with friends, attempting to gain some semblance of understanding. I finally left and went home, which took about 3 minutes. When I arrived home, my mom was there, partially asleep in bed. She works night work, so she?s generally unaware of what goes on during the day. She was, however, only partially asleep. I went into my mom?s room, trying to wake her up and figure out what was going on when she told me my dad had called. He lived about 2 hours or so away (depending on how fast I speed) and so we talked on occasion. I hit play on the answering machine and I heard a desperate message from my father. ?Sheila, planes hit the World Trade Center. I don?t care what happens, don?t you dare go to work. I don?t care if they fire you, it doesn?t matter, do NOT go to work.? That?s all I really remember of the phone message, a strict warning I had best heed. I dialed the phone to my office, thinking if I was really necessary, I didn?t have much of a choice. One of the women in our office picked up the phone, I think it was Sharon, and I asked her what was going on. ?We?re not emergency essential personnel. Everyone?s locking up and going home. Don?t come, we?re leaving.? Ok, I thought? I don?t guess I?m going to work today. I changed and I suppose I bummed around the house, calling loved ones, assuring them I was safe and not at work (working for the government has its down sides). When I look back to that day, it all feels so surreal, like a dream that I can watch happening to me, but that I?m not actually in. That?s how a lot of my traumatic memories are, something I can watch without participating in, just seeing myself go through the motions in response. That is how I remember September 11th. I see myself making the phone calls, talking to relatives, assuring them of my safety and wondering what actually happened. I remember days after it was over, talking in my AP English class about our own reactions, what it was we felt, fear or confusion. I was thankful, both parents were safe. Some friends had been in fear that day; I was spared the overwhelming anxiety of that emotion. I do however, realize the consequences. The effects of September 11th remain, despite living what seems is to be so very far away. It all seemed like a bad dream, the nightmare of this country, but I find that this reality has shaped our nation, into something stronger and more united than before. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 began like any other day for me...I dressed and drove to Belleview High School, where I was working as a secretary in the Media Center. At the time the first plane crashed into the tower of the World Trade Center, I was in the office to pick up some things for the Media Center. Along with several guidance counselors and secretaries, I watched in horror as the first plane struck. We all thought it was some sort of bizarre accident...I remember running back across the campus to the Media Center to turn the television on to CNN. Within a very few minutes, the second plane struck the other tower. We watched in disbelief as the commentators pointed at the smoke and flames that now billowed from both towers. Students filed out of classrooms as the bell rung for classes to change...some stayed in the Media Center to gather with the Media Specialists and myself to watch this awful story unfold. By the time the third plane struck the Pentagon, it began to feel like it might be the end of the world! Many students now filled the Media Center...watching, crying, some of them hugging friends who had relatives in the Towers, some praying quietly. I ran to the phone to call home and let my husband know what was happening. I asked him not to tell my 14 year old daughter, wanting to explain to her myself, not wanting her to be afraid without me home to hold her. My husband could not believe what I was telling him...we quickly finished our hurried conversation so that I could return to the news. I cannot describe the horror I still feel when I close my eyes...I can still see the images of the planes crashing into the buildings, the people jumping from windows, the faces of the people as they ran from the area. As the towers fell, my tears did also...and as I stood there weeping, the Pledge of Allegiance began to play over the school's loudspeaker. My librarian was so overcome that she could not lead the students in reciting the Pledge. I was barely able to speak past the lump in my own throat. Never had those familiar words meant so much to me. In the days that followed, the Media Center's television was constantly tuned in to CNN so that we could participate, from a distance, in the memorial services, public addresses and prayer vigils that occurred in the wake of these horrendous attacks. Today, I prayed for all of the families that lost loved ones in the attacks, to find peace and healing, to never forget that in the darkest days of America's recent history, we saw the light of America shine its very brightest...in the heroes who perished saving the lives of others, in the courage that continues to make America great. The morning of Sept 11th started out like any other day. We were paving a bridge in Gackle North Dakota, out in the middle of no where. I was lying in a ditch waiting for another truck to deliver asphalt to us when my dad pulled up in his company pickup and very sadly yelled to get in and listen to the radio. The first thing I heard was reporters from CNN gasping and yelling that there is a second plane that just hit the other tower. All day we worked and watched many planes fly over us to Bismark airport. By the end of the day, not a plane was in sight. All sorts of questions were asked? Who? What? Why? How could this happen in America? It was difficult to comprehend the full picture. It was more like we were watching a horrible movie. We were joined by a young Iranian friend. He has been here many years as a student and now as a professional. I believe that he was uncomforable as we watched.
