When I turned on the T.V. and I heard the news anchors saying we were being attacked, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I kept thinking how could anyone get into our airspace without the military knowing it and then they started to report that planes had been hijacked and terrorist were on board using the planes like missles. I never thought that I would live to see the day that America would be under attack. I contacted family members to make sure that everyone was safe, and thank God that they were. I went outside and started to put out more flags then I already had up. I remember thinking how quiet it was outside, there were no cars or children playing. A strange feeling came over me that I never felt before. I went back inside and kept praying to God to help us and protect all of us. I started to cry thinking about all of the innocent people who lost their lives;because some terrorist can't stand the way that we live free in America.I pray to God that I never see another day like Sept.11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Thanks for your message and your concern. We are alright...just. That means we?re doing well physically. The emotional side is a different story. Each of us experienced this horror in different ways: I was under 1 WTC 20 minutes before the first attack enroute (via the PATH) to Jersey City for a class that was originally to have taken place in that complex (but was moved at last minute for space reasons) Most of my seminar attendees had their offices over at 1 WTC; so -- at 8:50 am -- one of them received a cell phone call from his wife asking if he was OK, as there was a reported fire in his building. We were in a windowless room...so, as a group, we left the classroom and walked to the (33rd story) windows of our riverside building , which afforded a panoramic view -- 1000 unobstructed yards away -- of the WTC complex. It was a gruesome sight. Someone who occupied one of the nearby desks handed me his binoculars (he uses them to watch ships in the harbor) and I watched the flames shooting from the upper tiers and then began to see people jumping from the windows. That was particularly difficult. Since that building housed some of my students' offices, they were in a panic. We immediately called a halt to our activities and started to pack up. Just then, I SAW the second airplane (huge) ram into Tower Two and explode into flames. At this point someone said..."Holy Christ...this is no accident. They?re terrorists!" The building we were in is the tallest on the Jersey side of the river...and someone said "Let's get the hell out of here before they take this one!" I had all my baggage for London with me..(I was to have had a limo pick me up at 6 PM to take me to the airport)...so I schlepped all my teaching materials, (baggage, wrapped gifts, handouts -- four bags worth) downstairs to Exchange Place -- which looks right out over the water across New York Harbor to the World Trade Center. There we are...thousands of us in the street...with this unbelievable view of the carnage...completely and totally helpless to do anything but stare in utter horror. Police were pushing us back, for fear that there may be nearby terrorist activity. No one knew anything! At that point? about 20 minutes later...the second tower imploded...sending debris flying into the River and all over the surrounding areas. A work associate of mine had been on the ferry to New York from the Jersey side when she saw the second plane blast. The ferry turned around and I ran into her; and both us -- dazed and panic stricken -- grabbed each other, did a bit of crying and held on to the air. It was like watching a war movie or an 007 drama unfold before you and you are an ?extra? player. It was surreal. People just stood there...unable to utter real words, much less sounds. My friend, Angela, told me that she lived about 8 blocks back in Jersey City and would I like to go there? So...with the tonnage of my stuff, off we took by foot...arriving in time to turn on the TV and see the second building implode. I couldn't reach Sandy. No oper-ational phones. Angela's husband called her on his car phone and I asked him to leave a message for Sandy on either our home phone or her office phone that I was all right. A co-instructor whom I was to meet in England for tomorrow's (now cancelled) seminar reached Sandy who asked if she would call me at the number that Angela?s husband had left on the machine. So, by third party coincidences, we found out about one another's safety by around noon. This was a huge relief! Sandy had had her own experiences. Having voted in the primary, she was headed up out of the subway on Canal Street to her college -- which is four blocks from the WTC. She heard (first),then saw, an extremely low-flying jet -- obviously in trouble-- crash into the first tower...leaving a gaping hole in the shape of a plane....followed by smoke, then flames.and, as she describes it, paper fluttering down from the sky like snow ...the remnants of the work space on the upper floors. Equally surreal! The college closed (now being used as a receiving morgue and staging area) and she walked the over 100 blocks back home...as the destruction continued behind her. It was a two-hour trek back to West 8lst Street. She then spent the next several hours fretting about me, since she knows my work is often in the World Trade Center. We've lost friends (the flight attendant on the AA crash into the Pentagon...my sister's closest friend and next door neighbor.) I've probably lost a few associates from Morgan Stanley (it housed 2500 workers on the upper stories of Tower Two). I'm not sure about my Lehman clients, but I am an executive coach to three vice presidents who work(ed) on the 38th floor of One WTC. In these past 15 years, my primary business has been in the financial services industry, teaching interviewing techniques to thousands of executives in the Wall Street community. As the days unfold, there will be more stories and more grief. We wait. Our hearts break a little. We pray. As I write these thoughts, 5 WTC has just collapsed and One Liberty Plaza ? where I designed a training and development center for Merrill Lynch 25 years ago is about to implode. Sic transit gloria mundi! I'm grateful to be here. I haven't felt this stunned since the JFK assassination...and they're not that many folks around who remember that, as do we. It was an equally hopeless moment in which we all felt to powerless, hurt and angry. I was unable to get back to the city. so my friend's husband drove me to Hoboken last night where I slept at my niece and nephew's apartment. The ferries started letting people cross this afternoon...and, as I chugged across the Hudson toward the Chelsea Piers, there was the massive gap in the skyline...something was no longer there..a familiar landmark, part of my heart and a lot of my identity. We will never be quite the same again, will we? So there is the longer version of how we are....but we ARE here. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Scheduled to have surgery on Sept. 12, I was on the phone with my insurance company around 9:00 A.M. They were based out of Texas and were attempting to contact the surgeons office that I would be going to. We spent fifteen minutes on hold until the insurance representative came back saying that she could spend no more time on hold and noted that there was some sort of emergency up by where I lived, but did not know what. The rest of the morning went by, and me, without having any television, was not aware of any of the events. I began driving to meet a friend for lunch in Point Pleasant around 12:oo P.M. On the way I did notice that the streets were very desolate for that time of day and that the presence of state police was significant. When I got to my friends job, everyone was standing there with sullen looks on their faces. I casually greeted my friend and asked what was wrong with everyone. He replied "You don't know?" and I just stared back. He told me that I should ready myself for what he was about to say, knowing that I had for the past year had vivid nightmares of witnessing or being in plane crashes, one of which occured in Manhattan. "The World Trade Center is gone," he said "two planes hit the towers and they collapsed. One more hit the Pentagon and another crashed in Pennsylvania." I was in obvious disbelief and shock having it all hit me at once. We still proceeded to eat at the deli across the street but when we went in and saw employees and customers engaging in nothing but silence around an old radio broadcasting the details and the chaos in New York, the whole moment overwhelmed me and I abruptly left knowing that the way of life of the world had been changed forever. I spent the rest of the day watching the horrific event over and over on the news in my sister's living room. I later convened with my friends at a Dunkin' Donuts parking lot. We watched the sun illuminate the dust that once was The World Trade Center as it made its way down along the shoreline. The pain is still and always will be there when I see the horror of that day or when I pass New York City and know that we can never change what happened, we can never go back. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was early morning, around 7:30 a.m., when I arrived at the high school. I am the study hall supervisor there. It was my first year as a full-time faculty member there. It was a special day as half of the student body were taking ISTEP (state standardized tests) while the other half were participating in SLAM (September Learning Module). SLAM enabled the students to travel outside the school to do fun things like bowl, fish, tour our town, etc. I was to tour a group of new and exchange students through historically significant buildings in our small town. When I had left my house that morning everything seemed fine. Good Morning America had come on like usual. Their top story wasn't a particularly strong one. Before we were to leave the building, a student came up to me and said, "Did you hear a plane ran into the World Trade Center?" I said "No. What type of plane was it?" "I don't know," the student replied. I remember thinking that it must have been a twin-engine cessna or something that wasn't really serious. We had access to televisions but none of them were on. We took our walking tour and everything appeared to be normal until we went into our school corporation's offices to have a look around. The receptionist was on the verge of tears. She told us something horrible had happened and there was a big screen television in the board room if we wanted to watch the unfolding event. I couldn't believe what I saw. Smoke rising from one of the world's tallest buildings. Word had also gotten to the news anchor that the Pentagon had been hit as well. My mind was swimming. The information almost to thick for me to comprehend. The students and I assembled in seats around the school board table to watch the news coverage. I remember telling the students "You'll always remember this day. Just like some do when President Kennedy was assassinated." Then, all of a sudden, it happened.... the first one of the twin towers collapsed. I kept saying out-loud but to myself "I can't believe it." I said this over and over. I was trying to give the kids comfort but at the same time trying to help them comprehend this tragic event in American History. Upon seeing this, I felt the need for us to return to the school building. No one knew what was going to happen next. Some of those we saw or talked to that day were wondering aloud "Is anything else going to happen? Is the world just falling appart before our very eyes?" After we returned to the building shaken, both television sets in my room were turned to CNN. We learned in my room that all flights to the U.S. from foreign countries had been ordered to turn back. That Canada would now be responsible for taking all aircraft bound for the U.S. We also learned that schools in our capital city of Indianapolis were shutting down because they either were scared or parents came to pick their children up because of the uncertainty. About this time, the school's vice principal came in to inform me that we were going on "lock-down" status for an undetermined period of time. This means that we have to turn the televisions, lights off, close and lock the doors and windows and hide far away from potential flying glass and debris. That afternoon, parents galore came to the building or called our principal to make sure everything was alright. Fortunately, nothing our of the ordinary happened in our small corner of the Hoosier State. But we all as students and faculty felt very sad for those who lost their lives on that tragic day none of us will ever forget. Tell us your story: I had just started working overnights at the newly built Super Target in Minnetonka, Minnesota on Monday September 10th at 10:00 P.M. Our first truck consisted mostly of toys. Getting off work at 6:30 in the morning, my only objective was to get some sleep before my next shift that night. The first report of the first plane brought me out of my attempt to drift off and then the second plane was seen live. Surreal was the only way to describe the day. With little sleep I went back to work that night to another truck load of toys. It seemed appropriate that even though the day changed everything, we still stocked toys. For the children. Tell us your story: On 9-11-01 I was at work doing my usual morning work when the news spread through the office of the plane that crashed into the first tower. We were all shocked. We had not yet known that it was a terrorist attack. We thought it was an accident. Personally, I felt a deep sadness for the passengers and the people in the tower. I was praying that they would live but I could not imagine how with such an impact. Then we got news of the second plane going into the towers. I then knew truly America was being attacked. Not sure why but a deep fear arose in me, not knowing what to expect next. Then we heard of the third and fourth flights going down. I can tell you that I have never experienced the feelings I felt on 9-11. All of us at work were calling our families just to make sure they were okay. Knowing full well, that they were but just wanting to make that contact. We take family for granted so much, that when something like this happens, you just want to feel close to them. I can not imagine the loss and the pain the families are experiencing, the firefighters, the police, all of those involved, it was unimaginable...When I finally got home from work and actually saw the footage on the news, I hardly believed my eyes at such terror. I felt as if I was watching a television movie. There is so much out there that is fiction that seeing it for real is almost unbearable. I watched as much coverage the first couple of weeks, and still do watch a lot of the coverage. It is something that you do not want to forget about ever. I am a God fearing person and I believe that this terror has called this GREAT NATION back to GOD and PRAYER and patriotism to OUR COUNTRY AND FLAG. Where we need to be. For God has truly BLESSED THE USA. Through the next couple of days after 9-11, I cried, seeing the coverage, people looking for their family in such desolation. It made me think of what it is going to be like when JESUS comes to carry us home. If we think this was CHAOS, just wait until the rapture takes place. It will not just in New York City, but worldwide. This terrorist attack was a horrible thing to happen and I am glad that some good has come out of it. But I do with all my heart pray for peace and strength for everyone involved from the families to all the workers. God can give peace that no one can understand... I am also so Thankful for a PRESIDENT that gives so much and yields to God and his word for direction. My hat is off to President Bush and my prayers are with him and his family and administration. Tell us your story: I had just left a meeting and I was driving across the bridge from Manayunk to Bala Cynwood when I heard a local radio DJ said, "A plane has just crashed into the World Trade Center, where going to go to commerical and be right back." That is when I changed the radio back to The Howard Stern Show to get a better understanding of what was going on. I called my office and told them to turn the TV on. "What channel?" "It doesn't matter." On 9-11-02 The Howard Stern Show ran a reply of the horrific events and I can still remember where I was the day I heard the replay. I had talked to my Girlfriend later on in the day only to hear that a fellow employee's sister had worked there. My sister had called me at my office crying like I had never heard he before. As it turned out she knew one of the pilots. A couple employees at a manufacturer I work with were outside in Western, PA when they saw the plane go down. That night I sat on a couch with my Girlfriend and her roomate just watching the news thinking what is next, and as many people thought when does the official annoucement of Bin Laden being the attacker come? It is very eery to think growing up we hear our parents tell us that they remember where they were when events such as JFK, etc. happened. Never did I think this would happen, at this magnatude, that I will be telling my son about what happened on 9-11 and even though I didn't directly know a victim it is still heart wrenching and tear jerking to remember. Berkes Phoenix, AZ I was visiting my son, Chris who lives on Long Island, for my first trip to NY and having a great vacation. I had been to the WTC almost daily during my 10 days in NY. On 9-11, Chris left his place shortly before I did. I was on the subway on my way to finish my visit at the Holocaust Museum when it stopped one stop before the WTC. No one can understand anything being said over the speakers in the subway. Finally, everyone started getting off. Walking out onto the street, I heard that a plane had flown into the WTC. I thought ?what a horrific accident, a pilot flying a small plane has made a terrible mistake?. So, I kept walking south toward Battery Park and the museum. Somewhere along the way, I learned that another plane had flown into the other tower. Obviously, this was not an accident! I continued walking south trying to get to Chris? building (1 Financial Center?across the street from the north tower) to make sure he was safe. I didn?t know if he was in the subway stop at the WTC, in the mall getting a bagel, walking across the bridge between the WTC and the Financial Center (where they later found bodies) or already at his desk. People had their car radios on and I learned that two more planes were missing. Sometime after this, I heard a plane overhead. I ducked trying to see which way to run. By the time I heard the next plane, I looked up and saw that it was one of our fighter planes, patrolling the NY skies. Then I heard screaming and someone saying one of the towers was falling down. Was it falling down on Chris? building? Had he gotten out of his building and was he helping hurt people at the WTC site? I decided to walk west to see if I could see the street where his building was located. Maybe he would be running up that street. There was so much smoke, ash and pulverized concrete blowing. Although I was not in the hurricane wind, it was still blowing. The particles were beating into my legs. Why did I choose this day to wear a dress? I couldn?t breath. It must be chemical warfare because I had never smelled this before. I put a tissue over my mouth and nose. People were running by covered in ash/concrete particles, bleeding and screaming. What should I do? The other building fell. Emergency vehicles were everywhere. They were evacuating people out of their homes. Some had their pets with them. Where was Chris? meeting? Had he told me? Needless to say, my cell phone was not working so I could not call him. Finally, I found a working pay phone and got a call out to my Mother in Texas to let them know I was okay. Was I okay? I wasn?t bleeding, so I must be okay. At some point I learned what happened to the other planes. The buses were being used for rescue workers. The cabs were all gone. Where do NY cabs go, there are millions of them? The subway was closed. The train stations were closed. How will I get back to Long Island? What to do? So, I sat down on the sidewalk. I decided I should go back to Penn Station. Surely there would be a police officer who could tell me where the YMCA was or a church where I could stay the night. How will Chris know I?m okay? Is he okay? I couldn?t breathe. After hours of walking, a bar where I could get a coke and a bottle of water. So good. Keep walking. Finally, the station. They had just reopened the Long Island Rail Road. No schedule. I got on one, not going to New Hyde Park, but at least going to LI. It was packed with people, smelled terrible, no air. How did any people survive the train rides during WWII? It was about an hour before the train started moving. Oh, I recognize the name of this station. I?ll get off here. Maybe I can get a cab to NHP. Wait, there?s no station, just rows of tracks and platforms. Where?s the street, so I can get a cab? Thankfully, they?re announcing a train to NHP and I jump on it. Get to Chris? apartment. Thank God, his car is gone. He would not have driven to work in downtown Manhattan, so his meeting must have been out of the office. Called Mother and learned that Chris had called them shortly after I did. He was in a meeting in Brooklyn. Everyone knew we were safe, except me. The horrible sights, the horrible smell, the horrible fear of losing Chris, my best friend. I will never be the same again. My ticket to the WTC observation deck will not be used. That day started to be just an averags day. Kids got up geting ready for my little girls physical. On the way there I heared them talking an offical from the Pentagon when I heared they were atact only they were not sure exactly what happened yet. While in the doctors office they had the raidio going and found out something just hit the towers in N.Y my firstthing I wondered was if Cynthia (my aunt) was there. I went all day in schook. No one called and i wasn't able to get through anywhere so I just prayed, waited, And cried for what was happening. Tell us your story: My partner and I were having breakfast at a bed and breakfast at the shore when our hostess came in to the room and told us a plane had just hit one of the World Trade Center towers. We, along with our hosts and some other guests, went into the living room and watched in silence and horror, as the events unfolded on TV. It seemed like a bad movie, and I had the urge to stop it and run it backwards. Over and over the planes plowed into the buildings. Over and over the buildings fell down. We heard more and more horrible news. We didn't know when it would end. In the meantime, it was a beautiful sunny day. We were supposed to be going home to Philadelphia that day, but our host advised us to stay over another night, and we did. All day long we watched and talked with other guests and took long walks on the beach. We had only questions and no answers. I made contact by phone with my daughter and my mother. What could we say? I spoke to people in my office, which happens to be located in a large tower in center city Philadelphia. Although I really did not want to return there, when I learned that my friends were all at work, I knew I would go back. I thought--who will help me with my grief and fear? Will a psychologist come to our department? Then I realized that no one would come and that I, as the manager, would help the others. The next day, at work, I invited my co-workers to a coffee hour, and we talked for two hours. Everyone had some new information or perspective to share that the others had not thought about or known about. Overall, it was overwhelming. I had to take breaks from hearing about it and thinking about it, just to maintain my sanity. I would have liked to be doing something that would help victims and their families and prevent further horrors from happening. I was grateful for small miracles like when they found someone alive. I found out that my family and friends were safe, but a friend at work was missing her brother. It was so sad. If there is God, her or she was probably mourning too. I think there will be some bad events happening by surprise in the future. There is a lot of talk on TV and a lot of people who think they are experts at predicting, but they don't really know. We have to go on with our lives and not live in the fear, but avoid taking unnecessary risks. I put the American flag outside my apartment for one year after September 11. I work for on sept 11 2001 when someone said a plane had crashed in to the world trade center . As is my routine, I made coffee took care of our Doberman and sat down to see what was on the morning news. To my astonishment, I saw a plane crash into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. My first thought was what a horrible accident and why was there a plane flying over Manhattan? Just as I began to process this news, the reporter came back on the air with news of another plane crashing into the Pentagon. Thinking the news people had their stories and graphics mixed up, I turned my attention back to the Trade Center. That was when the second plane hit. Not knowing what else to do, I went to church and began praying for all the souls lost in this terrible event. I truly belived that it might possibly be the end of the world and prayed that everyone be delivered unto God. I am not an alarmist. I am trained to handle emergencies and am very good at it but this was beyond all telling. this was truly a cataclysm of epic proportions. Fortunately, I met our Pastor who was equally shocked and numb. I asked him if this was how the world was going to end. Father Smith said he did not know but we would have to hold onto our faith and wait. Shortly thereafter, my friend and her mother walked into church. Right away, they asked where my husband was. Nobody had told me this but instinctively, I knew he was there doing whatever he could to manage the chaos. Something told me he was alright but it also told me that a lot of other people were already gone and that this event would mark a turning point for all of us. At the end of that terrible day, we had lost thirty six men one woman and bomb dog Sirius. We would be forever without George Howard , Jimmy Nelson and Al Neidermier all classmates of Franks. We also knew that several others had recently seen, worked with or had lunch with my husband. They were all gone. We talk about them all the time. We have their pictures lovingly mounted on our diningroom wall as a testimony to duty and the supreme sacrifice. I also think about the others like my husband who physically survived but are forever scarred and damaged by the horrific sights and sounds of that day. My teacher dismissed us and turned on the radio to listen to what was going on. She hadn't told us during the class, so my classmates and I were in the dark. As we were walking out we heard and she told us about it. I was confused at first, I couldn't comprehend someone flying a jumbo jet into something like the WTC. In the six minute passing period between classes, news spread like wildfire. When I walked into my english class, everyone was buzzing about this and that, and those who had seen the television before they left their house were telling the rest of us what they had seen. As the class started, our principle, Dr. Veach announced to the students and teachers that we would not be permitted to have the news playing on any of the television sets, and that no school in our district would. Not many teachers turned their televisions off. He also promised to keep us updated throughout the day on the happenings across the country. During my last class, German, we had a lot of down time towards the end of the period. Herr Gardner decided to defy central administration and turn the TV on. ABC just recieved some freelance journalism footage of one of the planes hitting. It was the first I had seen, and I was horrified. Then we saw the pictures of ground zero. I was totally unaware that the towers had collapsed, and i jumped at the sight. I felt awful. I heard that there was a potential of tens of thousands of people dead. It was a somber car ride home with my car pool, but we tried to make it as normal as possible. We still listened to our music loud, and rolled our windows down, but no one was really paying attention to that. My friend who was driving had a sort of blank stare in her eyes, almost like she wasn't paying attention to the road. That night I didn't do much of my homework. The news was on every channel in the house. Dinner wasn't a family experience that night. When someone described 9/11 as the Pearl Harbor of my generation, I felt scared. I was angry, and wanted to punish those responsible, but I didn't want a prolonged world war, which was what happened after Pearl Harbor. That week on Friday, The school's pep rally theme was changed to Red, White, and Blue. Several organizations around the school were making plans to send money to the various funds. I'm heavily involved in Technical Theatre at Westlake, and we hold dances as fund raisers for a trip we take every year to a different place. The first dance after 9/11 made $2,000 for the Firefighter's Fund. I feel that America has come together as a country, and as a people. The sense of patriotism is almost overwhelming. Before, everyone had a love of country, but it wasn't as prominent, wasn't as meaningful as it is now. 9/11 gave my generation something to wave the Stars and Stripes about, and it taught us to appreciate the things we have. This past year doesn't seem like it was a whole year long. Whenever anyone asks me where the best place to live is, my answer will be a resounding "The United States of America." Because it is the best place to live, and because the American mentality is what allows a group of passengers to prevent another plane from causing the damage it was intended to. It's what allows the armed forces to ship out and protect us abroad in virtually no time. It's what allows students at a high school to raise thousands of dollars in aid of their fellow Americans. The American mentality is what makes this country the leader of the world, and it is what will make this country continue to stay the leader of the world. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My office building is directly next to the WTC Plaza and 7 WTC is right behind us. I was already working in my corner window cubicle when a co-worker said a plane crashed into the WTC. We just stood and watched what happened. We were so close to the WTC that I could tell you the color and style of the clothes that the people where wearing when they jumped out of the windows. It's true that there was one man and woman who held hands while they jumped. One of my employees was counting out loud how many people were jumping that I had to tell him to stop. I was so distraught that I kept crying out "they are just regular working people like us". The cell phones went dead right away but our office phones were working. I was able to reach my husband, my parents weren't home and my sister, a Police Officer was on duty. We were instructed to remain in our building after the first crashed and remained so until after the second crash then we were told to leave. I was the last one off of my floor, I ran back to switch from my heels into my sneakers. We walked down the stairs and out onto Church Street, the police and FBI were already there. They kept yelling run and don't look. I went down the block of the Woolworth Building and stopped and turned and could not believe my eyes. A policewoman said to keep going that the buildings were going to collapse. I thought to myself what a stupid thing for her to say because she will frighten people more. I made my way to Broadway and located some of my employees. I told them to go home any way they could and not to worry about the day's pay. I kept walking up and down Broadwy. The smaller buildings of the WTC were on fire. I had planned to visit the Godiva Shop at the WTC during the 10am break to buy some chocolate for my sister because we had Broadway tickets that night and she likes the truffles. There was little instruction about what to do when we reached Broadway, everybody was left uo to their own. I went across City Hall Park to the Brooklyn Bridge, all along trying to get the cell phone to work, yelling, "hello, hello" into it but it never worked. I left it on in case my family might be able to call me. I went to the Brooklyn Bridge and sat on the cement wall, just watching the WTC burn. The bridge was packed with people. There were some cars on the street crossing over who just opened their doors and let people hop in for a ride across the bridge. One yellow taxi wanted to charge and the people began yelling at him. Eventually I got up and started to walk across the bridge. The first tower then fell. People started screamming and running across the bridge. The people further up did not realize what happened, they couldn't understand why everybody was running. About halfway across the second tower fell. I just starting crying like crazy. A strange women was doing the same thing and we just put our arms around yet other and cried across the bridge, trying to reassure each other. I don't remember her name. We only had a few words of normalcy. At the end of the bridge we parted ways. I bought a bottle of water from the coffee cart and rinsed my eyes which were burning. I had a light layer of dust all over me. I just kept walking. There were buses running in Brooklyn but they were all packed and nobody was sure exactly what street they were going down. By this time must of the businesses in Brooklyn were closing up. I found a pay phone with a small line and called my husband, he wasn't home but I told him I would begin walking down Flatbush Avenue towards Prospect Park. I asked a copy store if I could use their bathroom, it was there that I found out about the Pentagon. I kept going down Flatbush Avenue, the sun was strong and hot. I stopped at a local bar, bought a shot of Scotch, downed it in two gulps and was out the door. It was all over the TVs. I finally walked to Prospect Park, I called and left a message again for my husband. He finally got the message, he was driving all around trying to find me. The top part of Flatbush Avenue was closed to traffic. He put me in the car and told me to be quite. He drove me home. He told me to call my family since they called and were worried about me. I made some calls, and received calls from people from around the world who were concerned about me and my husband. I spent the rest of the day on the couch glued to the TV. I went to bed. In the morning I had no office to go to. My office building is still standing but not habitable. They have to do a gut job, it is expected we will be allowed to return around August 2004. After being move several times my staff and I work in a small cinder block room in Manhattan. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The tragic event of September 11th has changed my life in so many ways as it has for many others. I will never feel as safe and care free again. Prior to September 11th, my views of government and world security really didn't play a large part in my everyday life. Of coiurase I was interested in things happening in our country, but other countries did not seem to important. Although, now I try to stay on top of all of the news that is happening around the world, due to the circumstances I realize that we are not totally safe. This is a horrible way to feel but, September 11th has opened my eyes and my life will never be the same. The morning of September 11th, I was sitting at my desk and my boss was listening to sports talk on the radio when he said you have to be kidding me, (he explained that the first plane hit the World Trade Center). Then we continued to listen and the second plane hit with the additional planes striking their targets shortly after. It didn't seem real! Of course we tuned into the news talk on the radio and listened in shock to the news accounts of what was going on. It still didn't seem real! The only thing that kept going through my mind was those poor people. The overwhelming sadness that I felt was unbelievable. We continued to listen throughout the entire day (of course) in complete horror. Although, later that evening when I actually saw the news coverage on the television, I did not imagine the extent of the damage. When viewing this horrific event, I never before had felt such compassion and sorrow for complete strangers. The multiple feelings that I felt were overwhelming, fear, sadness, anger and most importantly, HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? For many months after this tragedy, I thought about it constantly. I feared additional attacks would follow. Although Americans were told to go about their daily lives, but be more aware of youir surrondings. I personally could not follow that advice, at least at first. We weren't locked in our house, but we did not rush out to the City to shop anytime soon. I am ashamed to say that for many months after, I had mixed feelings that I wasn't sure about. Prior to September 11th, I had never had racial thoughs of any kind. Many of the stores I stop at to get my morning coffee and gas/food stores had foreigners running them. For awhile I stopped going to those stores and found different ones to get my coffee etc. These people had nothing to do with the attack and I was reacting like they all were terrorists. I knew my feelings were wrong but it was hard not to be bias after what had happened. I am not a racial person, and hope that I never have to again feel that way. To watch America come together like they did was the most inspirational account that I will ever probably witness in my lifetime. I give the utmost praise to the many thousands of people who risked their own lives to rescue those trapped. My heart and prayers go out to all of the victims' families, and the thousands of people that worked day and night to try to save that one more person from the debris. There is no where else in this world that you could feel this unity. I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!!!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11, 2001 to find my 3 year old son glued to the t.v. in his room. He'd fallen asleep watching a movie the night before and so the t.v. was on channel 3 when he woke. He had spent all morning watching airplanes fly into buildings and got upset when we wanted him to watch something else. We had to explain, (after watching it awhile ourselves), what had happen in a manner that we hoped was unthreatening to him. Since then my son has pointed out the flag to us everywhere we go. Since we had never talked about the flag with him before we asked him what it was. His reply was, "So everyone will know we're sad for the people that died." I've tried to explain countless times that the flag stands for so many things more but he just doesn't believe me.
