Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Being disabled and home all the time, I was watching Good Day NY on Fox five. I was also finishing up a phone conversation with a nephew, who lives out of state, when the first plane hit. I was telling him what had happened and that the report came over the TV that it might have been an accident. I hung up and I was glued to the TV. About an hour later, my nephew called back and all I remember him saying was: "What the hell is going on down there". I told him we were under attack, as the second plane had already hit. All I could say was "Oh, My God, as I thought of all the people I knew from the neighborhood that worked in those buildings. Joseph Ianelli, a friend, who worked in Tower 1, around the 97th fl, needless to say, his remains were never found. Our cousin's brother, Raymond Murphy - a NYC Fireman, was lost in the line of duty. I was remembering when the WTC was built. I would be in Manhattan on business and I would stop and watch these magnificent buildings go up. HOW DARE THEY ATTACK OUR CITY.... HOW DARE THEY KILL OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW US, BUT YET THEY JUDGE US. From that day on and for weeks, I taped every news report, I saved certain News headlines and articles. It's like I have to know that we got Bin Laden... I've become obsessed with his capture or demise. Since 9/11/01, I have become more tolerable and have more patience. I treasure my family more, even the ones that were not so tolerable before 9/11, And I say my prayers a little more, because I know, deep down inside, that 9/11 was only the beginning. On the news I kept hearing the name of Osama bimn laden.This whole plan was thought of by a person that was an Afgani.Week after week we kept hearing the same thing. We are still being affeckted by this tragedy .I thank all Police,Fire Fighter,and the Paramedics. The way most people changed after this tragedy was by showing that we are Americans. We don't give up that easily we have lots of perseverance and patriotism. After Sept 11th,Every where I went to I saw American flags and everyone was showing off the fact that we are American. No one can change that. We all react differently. I was sad, But after the events I wa proud to be an American. I was so happy that we have the american spirt and was noy about to give it up. September 11th should be a time we appreciate the people who helped the victims and surviors. I think we should remeber that this was a very cowardly thing to do but they won't be unpunised and will be the thing we do to defend our country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11th, I was leading my kindergarten class to their 9:20 AM music class. As we passed through the lobby, I noticed our building principal and the school librarian setting up a television and connecting the cables. This alarmed me, I could recall the television being positioned in this location, and it always was a harbinger of a tragedy. I continued down the hallway and ran through a mental checklist of possibilities?nothing, I could think of nothing that should or could prompt that placement of the television. I left my bubbling group of 4 and 5 year olds with the music teacher and proceeded back to the lobby. In those few short moments, a small crowd had gathered around the television. They stood, grim faced, and silent. Some had sat down on the small wooden airplane bench that stands in the lobby. I was unprepared for what CNN was broadcasting when I approached. Two plumes of smoke flowed from the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The World Trade Center?a place I have seen while visiting New York City?a place several hours drive from the elementary school I was standing in?a place near two friends. As I watched, dumbfounded, I could hear the anxiety and stress in the voice of the reporter, this concerned me as the live images came across the screen. Reporters are always so polished and their reports have theme music and graphics?not fear. As I stood watching the events unfold I can remember a couple of things I heard that really frightened me. One was that the German Chancellor had called this an Act of War. This rattled me, but I realized he had to be right. What are the chances of this being an accident? Then things got worse, they began to report that smoke was coming from the Pentagon and that there was a fire on the Mall in Washington. D.C. During my lifetime, war always took place across the ocean. World War II was history for me, and Vietnam was a childhood memory. Regardless, the people living in the United States always, always, avoided experiencing the war on their homeland. Planes were dropping out of the sky. The last thing I watched on TV that day was a person falling out of the World Trade Center. I walked out of the lobby and felt I had to call my wife. My two children were at the school I worked in, but I had to talk to Patty. The phone lines were jammed, or maybe I could not handle the simple procedure I had always followed for calling outside the building. I walked back to my empty classroom, choked up. The teaching assistants I work with soon came into the room and we began to discuss what was happening. Will the school close? What about the kids? Who would do this? Questions, without any answers. As with any school day, the clock drives students and teachers alike. I had to go pick up my children. I brought the class back to the room and poured the milk for snack debating with myself what I was going to say to the class. Over the years, I have had to discuss with my kindergarten class the loss of a parent, the death of a classmate and school shootings. After snack, I said nothing. I moved on with my lessons as if it were just another Tuesday in early September. The Physical Education teacher had been assigned by the principal to move around the building updating teachers. He had told me that the towers had collapsed. I could not comprehend, or accept this. I rationalized that CNN was over reacting, an easy task while isolated in my classroom. Later, he came back and said that we were to let the children know that something bad had happened in New York City. That was it, no more. Again, I said nothing. My day carried on right up until I delivered them to the school bus. When I returned from the bus line, my youngest daughter Margaret, in second grade, was waiting for me in my classroom. She said, ?Daddy what happened in New York City?? with extreme concern. New York was a place we had visited with our children. While visiting, we had met up with a friend and stayed in my daughter?s Godfather?s apartment. She was worried about those people. I tried to stay in control, but began to tear up, and I could see that this frightened her. I told her that people had used planes to crash into some buildings. ?Will they crash them here?? she said in a panicked voice. I tried to stay calm and said that President Bush had made all the airplanes land?none were flying in the air, except planes trying to keep us safe. I think I was trying to convince myself as well, but it did feel good saying that. My other daughter Leah, a fourth grader, came into the room full of details the ?older? kids had shared. I just wanted to go home, but a ?all call? through out the building asked all staff to report to the cafeteria for a meeting. The Principal informed us that it had been quite a day outside our schools walls. Panic had set in on some of the college campuses around New York. Parents were taking children home. He said the administration had done the best they could to keep us updated, and admitted that they were trying to cope at the same time. He let us go, after mentioning a prayer vigil that would take place on the Marathon village green that evening. As a family, we attended the service that night. We both grew up in this small upstate New York town, and could not recall a time when ALL the church pastors, priests, and reverends participated in one event. The mood was best described as somber and confused. Leaders of each church shared some words with the crowds and spontaneous hymns where sung. We all headed home. It was the first time, as an adult, I had trouble falling asleep because I was afraid. In the following days, I had to watch the towers fall over and over. I did not watch this on television; we do not watch it in our home. I watched my Kindergarten students build up block towers and ?fly? their hands into them. The teacher?s assistant in my room and I would just look at each other with dismay. Things had changed. In the classroom, we did discuss that we would try our best to keep each other safe. We could all talk about what was bothering us at any time. My family found out that our two friends were safe. One was on the way out of the city that morning, and the other well away from the crash site. And one year later, it breaks my heart when I read my daughter?s response to a recent homework question, ?List three things that scare you.? She wrote tornadoes, blood, and terrorists. I have a father?s hope, beyond all hope, that in the years to come she will be able to change that list of things that scare her and remove the terrorists. For me, I?m going to do my best to help both of my daughters grow up in a world without fear. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at the home of my niece. I had spent the night because it was too late for me to travel by train the nite before. On the morning of 9/11, I was preparing to get dressed to go home to Brooklyn. Watching NY1 as I did every morning, I was stopped in my tracks when I saw on TV an airplane plowing into one on the trade center towers. It took a few seconds for my ears to catch up with my eyes. Then I heard the voice on the TV saying that a plane must have accidentally flown into the building. After that every thing seemed to move in slow motion for me. I grabbed the phone and started calling my family at their homes and jobs, asking had they seen what I had just seen? When it became clear that this was no accident, and then another plane flew into the other tower, I just dropped into the nearest chair and started to cry. It didn't take me but two seconds to realize that this was a terrorist attack. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. Then I got mad, right then I started praying to God to let me heal faster just in case they needed to call me back into the military. I wanted very much to be deployed anywhere I was needed to stop these mad, sick people who were doing this horrible thing to us. And then I cried some more. Finally some my family members and friends started returning home from their jobs and schools, it was like we all needed to be with each other or we had to kniow where each of us were. It was a long day and night for me and my family and friends. We had to constantly assure the children that we were safe, they were afraid that the terrorists were going to be coming down our very own streets to destroy us. We the adults finally assured them that we were safe and that our military would not let that happen. Needless to say, that since 9/11, I have done and lot of crying and a lot of praying for the all of the heros that died on that day. I will never forget that their spirits are singing the song of freedom for us all. I was supposed to be at jury duty, but had been released late Monday afternoon and wanted to be sure the sub would be released for the day. While I was glad to be at work, I was glad to have done my duty through jury service. It was just under an hour before the students started that the first plane hit the World Trade Center. It took only a few minutes for all of the adults in the building to know what had happened and for the televisions to go on. Fate intervened the day before when I was released from jury duty. As difficult as it was to spend that day with my students, I cannot imagine how I would have felt being away from them on September 11th. It's now one year later. I didn't know what to expect of myself or my students today. It has been a difficult day, in terms of emotions. However, my students are my heroes today. They are facing the events of last year with determination to make the world a better place. They are sharing their hopes for peace and celebrating their freedoms. Nobody could have been prepared for what would happen in our world. I could never have prepared for sharing these to life-changing days with young people. The principal came over the intercom and said "Teachers, I need to ask that you not watch the news with the unfolding events in your class- time, waiat until your break." There was a hint of urgency in his voice, and of course, not many people knew it at that point, and many teachers as well as students did exactly what he had asked us not to. My teacher had lent her T.V. that day so she went into the hall and asked so,eone. At that time only the first planae had hit and we didn't know much about it. she came back saying that there was a crash between the world trade centers and it was nothing, so we all calmed down. Well, when we went to 3rd period is when everything got stirred up! The students that had watched it were in histerics and it sent everyone into panic. By the time we got to 4th everyone was still really confused, and so my 4th period teacher turned on the news and explained that we were under attack. Everyone just watched, silently. Lots of students were crying. We were asll constantly (even teachers) watching out the windows and doing nothing but talking about it. When i got home I called both my parents and other relatives to make sure everything would be okay. I remember hearing jets over the school for the next few days, and everytime everyone would rush to the window and it would just start all over again. Then one time about 2 weeks later we weere in choir and we heard a really loud sound like an engine or thunder. Everyone startied crying immediatley. We were all like that for about 30 seconds, but it seemed like 10 hours. We figured out it was just the band next door playing on the big drums, but I will never, ever forget how I felt during that time. And, now, it being the 1 year anniversary of 9/11 it just brings back all the memories and I feel even more upset because of what we know today. ALways remeber our armed forces and police and fire fighters. I always supported them because my family is a miltary and police family, but I think it's ironic, that this event, meant to send us into chaos and terrorize us, has actually helped us more than hurt us. It was early here in San Francisco but mid-morning in New York, and the story was still developing. The radio came on in the middle of an interview with a Washington correspondent who, with the rest of the press pool, had been evacuated from the White House with no clear idea why. I thought sleepily, oh, great, some nut job called in a bomb threat. But then they cut back to the studio and announced, probably for the hundredth time, that a jet liner had struck the World Trade Center. I will never forget that moment. For a second or two, still mostly asleep, I played the words back in my head and wondered if I'd really heard what I thought I'd heard, and then I rolled over and stared at the radio in disbelief, as if it could explain the meaning. For the next forty minutes or so, I was glued to NPR. I was so stunned that it never occurred to me to turn on the television. I can't even remember anything I actually heard during those forty minutes. I know that when I finally did think to turn on the TV and saw the towers fall, I wasn't expecting it. It was probably a replay, at least of the first tower's collapse; I don't remember the anchors seeming surprised. But I was still too much in shock to register everything properly, and I've never been able to work out exactly what I saw when. All I remember clearly is the terrible way in which it kept getting worse: the blow of seeing the first impact, no less staggering for having heard it described again and again on the radio; the kick to the stomach of the second impact, when it became so awfully clear that it was an attack; and then the bone-chilling, unthinkable horror of seeing first one tower and then the other collapse, terribly aware that there were people in there. And I dimly remember thinking: "It's finally happened" -- the kind of horror we've seen a hundred times on movie screens and yet never quite allowed ourselves to really believe could ever be made real. The rest of the day passed in the peculiar numbness of grief settling in. There were phone calls and tears; a brief, useless attempt to get my mind out of the horror by going to work; an equally useless trip to an overwhelmed Palo Alto blood bank; and finally I sat out the evening with a close friend who had moved here from Manhattan. I was lucky: in the end, somehow, not one person that I knew was killed in the attacks. And yet I felt the attack -- and still feel it -- personally. I think we all did. One other moment in the late morning still haunts me. I had to keep a doctor's appointment -- it seemed mad to go on with such a routine bit of business, but there I was. As I parked my car, the NPR reporter outside the White House was describing how a young man had bicycled up to the crowd and declared loudly that the U.S. had got what it deserved. I started towards the doctor's office in a helpless rage. Around the corner I passed a stranger who looked like an Arab, and for the briefest instant I hated him, purely and completely. The feeling passed, but it shook me badly, because I hadn't thought I was capable of that kind of blind hatred, even for a second; and because I realized that if my own response could be that savage, then Arabs in the U.S. were in for a very rough ride, and I understood for the first time that there were more tragedies still to come. As it turned out the aftermath was much worse than I'd feared, and I never heard news of violence against Arabs -- or Sikhs, or Indians -- without the uncomfortable memory of that one awful moment of fury. Cruz October 6, 2001 September 11, 2001 Taking the elevator to the 95th Floor of Two World Trade Center is something that had become a mindless, involuntary action for all of us who worked there. Our offices at Fiduciary Trust had consisted of the 90th to 97th Floors, with a few unoccupied floors in between. I had been working at Fiduciary for over two years,and it had become a second home to me. The Call 8:40 a.m. I arrived at my desk when I noticed that no one else in my group was there. It was still early, and relaxing a bit before theday began was what I would normally do on any ordinary workday. Yet, what I thought was the beginning of any other ordinary workday became much more. It began as the most terrifying day of my life. Panic 8:43 a.m. I received a call from a friend of mine and I had told him I had come into work early to finish a project I was working on the night before. When asked how the remainder of my day looked, I replied, Im going to have a really busy day ahead of me, so Id better start it. Almost immediately after I hung up the phone, there was an unforgettable sound - the roar of an airplane engine. Its ironic that despite how high up we were, we hardly noticed any aircrafts overhead. Yet today, we heard this one. The next sound we heard was what sounded like an earthquake, then a bomb. A woman on the Northeast side of our floor screamed, and as I quickly arose from my chair to see what the commotion was, our windows shattered. What was that?! I screamed. Someone yelled, I think a plane just hit Tower 1! Everybody get out of the building! I grabbed everything I brought in with me that morning (my purse and briefcase), and ran towards the nearest exit, which was approximately 10 feet from my desk. I was running for my life, not knowing what would happen next, when I saw my co-worker Lori running out as well.We headed for the elevator, then I stopped.I asked her, Shouldnt we be taking the stairs in an emergency like this? and she replied,No! Just get in the elevator! Cmon! We dashed into the elevator and held the door as our co-worker Andrew ran in. All three of us looked at one another in disbelief. An eerie feeling stirred throughout my body. For a moment, I thought I was dead; as if our Tower, 2, had been hit. Then the elevator stopped. The doors opened to the 90th Floor. Occupying the 90th floor were the Legal and Human Resources departments. The elevator door opened, and all that was heard were the screams of panicked employees. Lori and I pleaded with them to come into the elevator, but no one did. The door then closed. Why didnt they go? This question haunts me every day, due to the fact that many of the people on the 90th Floor who were there that day are missing. We landed on the 78th Floor, which was one of the main elevator banks at Tower 2. Lori and I ran to the nearest elevator we could find, and shoved our way in. A woman in front of us said, Thats it! No more people! I looked behind me, and there were two men - scrambling to get on another elevator. When the elevator stopped at the ground floor, I looked to my left. Liberty Street, which is the main entrance used by many Trade Center employees, was in ruins. Debris from the Tower and office papers engulfed the sidewalk. I watched as security guards led people away from the street outside, when I took my cell phone from my purse and called my manager, Joanie. Still not really knowing what happened, I said, Joanie! I think there was an explosion in the World Trade Center! She asked me to hold as she turned on the television. Oh my God! A plane just hit the Trade Center! For whatever reason, I asked her if I should go back upstairs. Joanie relentlessly said, No! You go home and call me as soon as you can. When I ended the call, I heard someone on the PA system say that there were no problems with Tower 2 and workers should go back to their desks. I decided to walk out. I saw a few co-workers in the lobby, including my former manager, Chris, who inquired if I was ok. Andrew, who just recently underwent knee surgery, became my rock. The Journey 9:03 a.m. As Andrew and I calmly proceeded to walk from the building, the roar of another airplane engine hovered overhead. We watched in horror as one more plane dove into the upper floors of Tower 2. While everyone ran frantically to search for a safe location, a stampede of people ran towards me and knocked me into a steel barricade. Andrew quickly lifted me up when in the distance was the alarming image of people jumping from windows to their deaths. I quickly grabbed Andrew and asked, Where do we go? He calmly replied, The South Street Seaport. Its the only place thats safe for now. 10:03 a.m. We walked to Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport, where many took refuge. Almost all cell phone service was down, yet I remembered I had the ability to send and receive e-mail messages on my Palm Pilot. Shaking uncontrollably, I e-mailed my friend Joe to tell him I was fine and asked that he call my family to let them know I was ok.Andrew went to a payphone nearby to call his family, when a third rumble came. Tower 2 looked as if it was about to topple on us; onlookers by the masses ran in terror towards the edge of the pier, prepared to leap into the water below. Were trapped, I said to myself. This is it. The Tower fortunately collapsed onto itself, which instantly gave me the initiative to begin my journey home. We decided to start walking up the FDR Highway, which was the were filled with people, mostly distraught and covered in soot, making their way uptown. Andrew turned to me and said, Tower 2 is going to collapse. I believe that in the shock of what I and so many other people just witnessed, I numbly shook my head. We had barely made it past the Seaport when Tower 1inevitably collapsed. 12:30 p.m. After two and a half hours of walking and trying to get cell phone service, we wound up on 35th Street and 3rd Avenue, in Midtown. Andrew noticed a cab driver who had pulled up along the curb in front of us and agreed to drive me home - at no charge. I said a somewhat emotional goodbye to Andrew, who in this traumatic time had truly been there for me. I was elated to know that he would be able to take the ferry home to New Jersey. To Andrew, God Bless You. Youre an angel. 3:10 p.m. We finally arrived in my neighborhood and made one last desperate attempt to call into my voicemail. There were 13 messages left from family and friends. It was the first time that day when I broke down and cried. I had survived a terrorist attack. Im alive. The Recovery Although I have yet to receive counseling for the circumstances surrounding the attack, Ive learned that expression through words has become my strongest outlet to recovery. Ive taken into deep consideration all my friends and colleagues desperately trying to reach me during that incredibly trying day of September 11th. Every conversation has ended with a sincere I love you, or I miss you, and the emotional support has been phenomenal. To my family and friends, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Her husband came home from work and woke her up. She came in my room and told me that there had been a plane crash in the US but at this time there was no talk of terrorist attacks. I drifted back to sleep thinking plane crash...poor people...pray for the famililies. My sister left the TV on overnight so that it would be the first thing I saw in the morning and I couldn't believe what I was looking at. It was as though someone had punched me in the gut. I can't even describe how this day has effected me. I am almost speechless as it all seems like a dream. How could this have happened? It is all so surreal...even when we watch over and over again...it still just couldn't have really happened. The total devestation..the absolute horror of the amount of lives lost. Tell us your story: I think in some aspects I shouldn't be posting on a site about Sept. 11th because I wasn't at any of the locations where the actual tradegies occured. But, with that said I felt that I have something to contribute even if it's just someone reading and the thought "I felt the same thing" comes to mind. I started work early that morning probably about 6am when we reached the hospital where I was temp for the summer. I remember getting everything ready for what seemed to be another boring day of entering patient information. A few hours into my work I noticed the lite rock radio station that they had pumped through the speakers of all the rooms had changed to news. At first I was confused and thought maybe someone was doing a skit or some sort've morning talkshow joke (as they sometimes do). I wandered up to the front desk where I was greeted with people scrambling around to get a spot to watch the breaking news. We actually were watching when the 2nd plane hit tower 2 and all of sudden the sound, the world even, stopped. I remember just sobbing saying "Who would do this?" over and over. As the day progressed and more news came in on what had happened, and where the planes had crashed the level of fear began to rise. There was rumblings about how they were going to lock down the hospital because people feared that the planes were aiming for Pittsburgh. A silly thought in retrospect, but I kept thinking how insignificant and powerless we all are in stopping any of this. In some ways I still feel that way, that we will never be in control even if we think we are. He said, "Our area supervisor called you needs to come in and call him." On my way to work I heard that all major league games were canceling, all schools were dismissed and the Canadian borders were cut off. First, I remembered in 2000, the George Orwell comic I read in high school. I thought it was a joke. But, the joke continued and I began to panic. What is going on? I called my supervisor and the first words out of his mouth were,? are you okay?" I asked what was going on. He said the trade center had been attacked. He told me every one needed to be at the store and prepared for any type of panic situations. I drove home as fast as I could as I listened to my radio. I pulled in the drive and ran in side to turn on the TV what I saw was devastating. I ran threw my house to find my fianc?. He thought I was over reacting or heard some bad information. I insisted that he turn on the TV he did so and sat in front of it for 3 days watching as the fireman attempted to recover bodies from the rubble. All I could do was prey that nothing like this continue and that the worst was over. Those people no warning at all. The things that were flashing through their minds as they fell upon death. I scared the living hell out of me to even imagine what they were feeling or thinking. I felt helpless and no longer in control of my life. However, that day thought me something. My English teacher thought my carpe deem seize the day. I never understood those words till 911. So I changed my life by cutting my work time and getting less pay. So that I could spend more quality time with my family and cherish the things in this country that other countries do not have. The ability to listen to the radio, to laugh out loud for no apparent reason to give unconditional kisses and hugs to the ones I love and express my opinion every day. To where that flashy color or spend that extra money to make a child smile or to that extra five to the waitress instead of spending it on cigarettes. Just as Jill and I did every morning we would use the Internet machines that where placed in the hotel lobby for the guest. We would just write and tell everyone that we where fine and that we where having a great time and the weather was AWSOME! Well on that morning we put our money into the machine and pulled up the Yahoo main page to get to out email, so to my amazement I say " hey Jill look a little plane hit the Twin Towers", little did I know that a jumbo jet had caused one of the worst terrorists attacks in world history. I am guessing Yahoo had just received the news over the wire like everyone else, which they really did not know what had just happened. As just finished saying that to Jill, a worker in broken English asked me if I was American, and I said, "yes". She said, "Everyone was watching TV in the hotel bar area in the lobby". Now let me explain how far I was from the hotel lobby bar. I was about 15 feet around a corner, and that lobby had about 200 Americans in front of a TV watching CNN in total amazement! I could not hear one of them. After seeing that TV and the people around me crying and consoling each other, it was the most disturbing thing I have ever saw. Later that night I was able to call my mother at her work and let her know I was fine and totally scared! Come to find out following the next 2 days there were about 30,000 people stuck in Aruba. Terrorists killed thousands of people, not just Americans, but people from all over the world. Americans are really people from all over the world living together, helping each other. A year after these tragic events, we are still working together. We have survived, and no terrorists could ever tear apart the love in this country. Does that mean we haven't been affected by these terrible deeds? Of course not. Take a look around you. A whole lot has changed. My life, along with millions of other people's lives all over the world, has been touched in one way or another by September 11th. You will see that our country is more united than ever! I dare you to try to count every patriotic thing being done in our country. It's nearly impossible. There are that many. From people lighting candles, saying prayers, to all the flags on every door or window, everyone is working together to get past the pain and to show their American spirit. There have been other changes, although we wish they weren't necessary. We have had great advances in security and have become more aware of possibly being reintroduced to harmful diseases. Some people have been affected more than others, some even losing family members and close friends. No matter what the situation, we have all been affected. At the time of the attacks, I was at school. What had started out as a regular school day, ended up being one of the most upsetting things ever to happen in our history. Not long after the planes hit the World Trade Center, we started to sense that there was something wrong. Because we were in school, we were not informed until later about what was going on. I understood why. After all, there were younger children in the building that might not have been able to cope with the situation. Still, I would have liked to know the facts a lot sooner. We heard rumors, but I didn't really believe what everyone was saying. I remember one of my friends was wearing a New York City shirt with the Twin Towers on it. She said they were gone, but I still wasn't sure if the rumors were true. It wasn't until I got home and turned on the television, that I found out what was going on. That's when I saw the events that were happening. Things that were so tragic I practically started crying right then and there. I didn't know anyone who had died, but I was affected just the same. I remember turning the radio on and going online to download and listen to the tribute songs. I think that was when I really grasped what was happening. I hope that these events will never be forgotten. I hope they will live on forever in our hearts and in our minds. We should remember all the innocent people who died and all of the people who died helping others survive. We need to remember the people on the planes who knew they were about to crash. We need to remember the people on the flight in Pennsylvania who fought back to save the lives of other people who might have died. We need to remember to always stay together. We need to learn to love each other so that America can keep standing strong. United we stand. God bless America! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We had just moved to wisconsin the week before the world trade center. Prior to that we had lived in North Carolina I started orientation that day at my new job at 0900. Shortly after ariving at the long term care facility I was to become Director of, We noticed staff as well as residents were gathered around the television sets. People were talking. The residents especially the men were fixated on the televison set. No one moved the men began an informal support type network. Many of these men had been in the service. They began to share their stories of survival and military service. One talked about how Pearl Harbor had changed his life. He told me that this act of terror would change all our lives from that day forward. Our facility was transformed residents who usually stay too themselves were out in common areas watching television. The Women stated a pray group for those still missing. One of the woman had a grandson who worked at the world trade center. It was a full day before she found out he was okay. I learned alot about the elderly that day. Never before had realized these men who are now old and needing so much care were hero's. My respect for them greatly expanded. I still work in long term just not at the same place. Each year our residents have a memorial to that day. They have planned the events on how we will celebrate tomarrow. We are presenting the flag and having a pray sesson for those who survived and those lost. We are all wearing red white and blue tomarrow the newspaper is coming to record our memorial. The men who live at our home in the military will be honored. I think the biggest change in me after 9/11 is that I have a new appreciation for the policy, fire fighter and the brave men who serve our country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9/11/02, I was in Atlanta attending a training seminar. I was scheduled to fly home to Los Angeles that evening. I learned of the attacks during the morning break. The big screen TV at the bar showed all that was happening. The announcement was made at the time that all flights were being grounded. I was able to call my wife at home to tell her to turn on the TV and also that I didn't know when I could return home. Needless to say, the rest of the training seminar was cancelled. The instructor was in tears--he was from the Boston area and had clients that worked at the World Trade Center. As a class, we knew it was far more important to get home to our loved ones. I was actually lucky--I was able to check back into the hotel I was staying and didn't have to scramble like so many others who were diverted to Atlanta. I also had a rental car, so I wasn't stuck. I offered to drive other stranded travellers around and even offered a classmate to drive him home to Indiana (wasn't necessary, as he was able to get a car). The tough part was talking to my three 6 year old children (triplets) that evening. I assured them I was safe and that I wasn't near where the "bad guys" where. It wasn't how I wanted them to learn of how dangerous our world can be. When the flight moratorium was lifted, I was able to get a flight that Thursday night, I talked to many people who had been stranded throughout the country and Canada. Universally, everyone talked about how total strangers had pulled together to ride this out. I arrived home very late Thursday night. Because of the uncertainty of flights, I didn't tell my family that I was on a flight, so it was a nice surprise for them. Likewise, at work on Friday, I was welcomed back with great cheer, as I was one of the few in my company to be stranded. I've heard in the news that the terrorists had potentially looked at flights from a number of cities, including Atlanta. It still chills me to think that my original Tuesday flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles on a 767 might have been on an list the terrorists had.
