Then rushing home to call his brother, who worked in Lower Manhattan, to make sure he was OK, and watching on TV, as the South Tower crumbled. It took hours to get through to family in NY but I was frantic to find out if anyone was at the towers. When the North Tower fell, it was so surreal. Just unbelievable. How could this be happening,,,,,here,,,,,,in the U.S.A.,,,,,,,,in New York City. When those towers were built, I watched every da, from start to finish. How could they now be gone? All the lives lost. It was more than my mind could assimilate. I thought the tears would never stop. I had just watched the Lynnhaven Middle School bus leave at approximately 8:25 AM, and I sat down to watch "Good Morning America". At approximately ten minutes to nine o'clock they announced that a small plane had hit The World Trade Center. They planned the cameras to view The World Trade Center buildings smoke was billowing out of one of them. I just sat there and stared at the T.V. in disbelief. Shortly after there i watched a second plane hit the second tower. I continued to watch T.V. all day long as planes hit the Pentagon and in Pennsyvania. 2.]Has your life changed because of September 11th 2001? If so tell us how. I think everybodys life changed in some way that day. I feel prowd to be an American, and I have more Pride in the Human spirit. 3.]What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Tell us your story: The day was bright here in Stoneham, and I had sent an email to my office letting them know I wasn't feeling well enough to make it into work. I must have gotten up right as the first plane hit the first tower. It isn't as clear as I'd thought it would be - my husband either called me or IM'd me about something happening in NYC. I didn't turn on the TV - I went to www.cnn.com but there was only one line about it. I didn't even turn the TV on then - I think I turned it on several minutes afterwards and it was not because of what my husband told me - I think I was probably looking for the weather channel. But every channel was filled with pictures of the towers smoking. I was in shock. I wondered..WHAT HAPPENED??? I had no idea even then what was going on - I started to listen to the newspeople and everything began unfolding thru their words. I was transfixed. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. All I could remember is how beautiful those building were to me - and how much I had enjoyed working on the 99th floor of 2 World Trade Center. Then the first building crashed down and a gasp slipped from my lips and tears filled my eyes. I called upon Jehovah because I knew that there were so many people not just in the building, but under the building where the stores and the trains were and that some of them would be my christian brothers and sisters - other Jehovah's Witnesses. I shook my head in absolute disbelief and sobbed when the 2nd tower shook to the ground. It is still like a dream - when I think of it, I feel as if someone has shaken me awake from a deep sleep. I never slept that night. The hum of the TV was the backdrop of our bedroom - I waited for them to find survivors - I couldn't sleep and if I dozed, I startled myself awake to watch more of the TV. I cried and cried and prayed for Jehovah's Kingdom to come and take away the pain and suffering of the world. Tell us your story: Well first of all I had no idea that all this had happened I was running late for class so I hadn't even turned the TV or radio on, so when I got to class and everyone was talking about something I had no idea what they were talking about. So I listened for a while and I caught bits and pieces of it, but never really caught the whole thing the teacher let us out early b/c she was pretty shaken. So I went back to my room to find out what was going on when I got there my roomate(my cousin) was watching it on TV I couldn't believe it had happened. I watched as they showed it over and over again the people running the 1st building falling and then the second it was terrifing I struggled to keep from bursting out in tears and anger to who did this. I didn't understand how God could let this happen to so many innocent people. I'm a strong Christian and it scared me b/c if you know the Bible it talks about the end times and things like this happening, wars and rumors of rumors, nation will rise against nation and so on. I watched everyday as they showed it over and over the planes hitting the buildings and them talking about people calling their loved ones or some getting out b/c they ran others not getting out b/c they stopped to help someone and neither got out, or even the ones who jumped to their death. Even though I had no one in the buildings it made my heart hurt for the ones who did. For the children who lost mothers or fathers or for the husbands and wifes who lost their spouse, or for the parents that lost their children. It was horrible, but through it all I prayed and trusted that God knowing all that had happened would be there having his arms around every single family member that was watching this happen. Tell us your story: I had just sat down to work at my desk, when a co-worker came into the accounting department to inform us that the first twin tower had been hit by an airplane. We immediately got up and went to his office to look through the window. It was the worst site I've ever seen in my life. Our beautiful landmark had a huge hole in it. The smoke was so thick, creating an enormous, dark cloud in the sky. I kept running back to my desk to speak with my mother and sister on the telephone. When I returned from one of those calls, the second tower had been hit. We watched in disbelief and with tears running down our faces. Then it was announced that the city was frozen, no trains, no buses, no airplanes no traffic in nor out. We felt like sitting ducks, since some airplanes were reported unaccounted for. The people were seen jumping from the windows to escape the flames and smoke. I prayed for them and their families, the children they would not return to. When the first tower fell I could not accept it. My mind told me it was still standing there behind the smoke. My co-workers assured me it was gone. I thought of the people standing on the street, how many had been killed? A single tower stood without it's twin and it broke my heart because I love this city. I ran down the avenues to meet my sister, as the second tower fell. It may seem silly in comparison with the real heroes of 9/11, but my sister was my hero that day. She made sure our sister-in-law Greta and I went home with her, she wasn't leaving us behind. We were blessed with a ride home, which Lizzette got for us. I was in a daze, in shock, I was'nt thinking straight. The traffic was horrible. People were standing at bus stops, the lines were a block long. Strangers were sharing cabs, something you never see in New York. Thousands of people were crossing bridges and we drove around for a while looking for a open bridge to cross to get to the Bronx. I'll never forget the moment I stepped out of that Jeep and onto familiar ground, I was home. I felt like God had given me a second chance at life. I was glad to see my 8 year old son again. Normally, NJ Route 287 is an extremely fast road. The sun was shining so bright, and the day was just beautiful - so I didn't care. I usually listen to the radio in the morning, but decided to listen to some Steely Dan instead. Little did I know that horror was unfolding in America. I arrived at work and a friend greeted me outside our building. He said "trouble in paradise." We had recently experienced a massive layoff, so I thought that the axe was falling once again. But immediately, another co-worker frantically came out of the building and said that the city was locked down, and that another plane had hit the second tower. Someone grabbed a radio and we began listening. A few minutes later, I decided to head down the street and see tv coverage. I still remember the day being so beautiful. I remember watching the towers crumble. Dear God, I will never forget that. They closed work at 11am, and I headed home. I remember looking up in the clear blue sky and seeing no airplanes. What an eerie feeling. I remember seeing the smoke coming from the towers from my apartment window in NJ. I remember sleeping about 2 hours that night, constantly getting up with my wife to watch the news. Living so close to NYC, I always loved the Towers. They were just so magnificent and beautiful, especially at night with all the other city lights. The following week, I found out that the goalie on my men's hockey team made it out with about 10 seconds to spare. He saved one woman's life, but lost several friends at his workplace. I also found out that a friend's cousin, whom I had met just a few months back, died in the attack. Just recently, I visited the 9/11 exhibit in the Smithsonian Institute of American History. It was incredibly moving. There, two feet away from me, was wreckage of all kinds. I reached out and held a piece of a door from a firetruck. I then left the exhibit. It was just too hard. They say that time heals wounds. It will take a long time, but by the grace of God, we will get through it. May God bless all the families and friends of the victims on this tragic day. I will never forget that day, I can replay it second by second in my head over and over again, sometimes I don't even try to, it just happens. Is it selfish of me to feel so affected by this tragedy, I lost no one directly, yes my friends cousin was a heroic fireman who lost his life and my moms friends brother perrished as well, in fact, I do know of 7 people personally that died in the face of this horrific act. I remember that morning so intensly as my then three year old son jumped on my bed complaing he was hungry yet the child growing inside of my was draining my energy, I couldn't pull myself up. I wanted just a few more minutes of "peace". Then as I watched the Today show the tragedy started to unfold before my very eyes. My husband worked for the Long Island Railroad in the track department, he could be working anywhere from Manhattan to Montauk. When the first plane hit I had to call him. It was a Tuesday morning just days earlier we sat at a Bar and Grill inside the towers that we enjoyed. Our friend worked in the towers and introduced us to it. Since the Saturday before we had a party to go to in Manhattan we decieded to make a day of it visiting our favorite spots. I called him not because I thought the face of our world was forever changing but because I thought,wow we were just there. As I spoke to him the second plane hit. I'll never forget his words," We are getting attacked." Could we be? No Way, not the USA. He delivered the news from me to the other 15 guys in his gang. Now as they reflect on the events of September 11th they recall it was me who first delivered the news to them. As reality hit and then yet another plane went down panic set in. My grandmother 75 years old worked across the street and my two very best friends worked there! Where were they. The phone calls started I began using my house phone and my cell phone at the same time calling all three of them over and over and over again. The minutes felt like hours, the hours felt like days. I would do anything to hear their voices. As I kept getting there voicemails horrible thoughts kept entering my head. Where they buried under the rubble, were they alive, hearing the phone ring unable to get to answer as they lay dying? I kept thinking the child inside of me would one day be learning about this horrible day in history class. I thank God often that my grandmother and friend made it out alive. Although we never heard from my grandmother until the next day but she was able to get a message to us through a stranger. I guess really there were no strangers that day. She gave a store owner in Manhattan a piece of paper that said only my mothers phone number, her name and the message I am safe, I am alive and I am stuck on Manhattan, I will call you asap but know I am okay. I went to work that afternoon, I worked at a doctors office, as most business were closing as a result of the events unfolding around us, they had to stay open. The phones kept ringing. Patients whose love ones were missing were hysterical they needed valium, well what they really needed where their loved ones, but unfortunatley that option was not available. Living so about 35-40 miles from manhattan you could smell fire in the air, fighter jets flew over head and you could sense the world would never be the same. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I feel very fortunate. We were travelling back east. We left Washington DC about 2 days before September 11th. We were headed west through Pennsylvania. We almost spent the night of the 10th in Somerset, PA but my husband wanted to see how close to the Pennsylvania/Ohio border we could get. Because of that, we were about 35 miles away from the PA plane crash. Since we were still on western time, we slept in that morning and turned on the news just in time to see the second plane crasing into the WTC. We were watching it on CNN and they weren't covering things as they happened. We disn't know about the PA crash until we called home to tell everyone we were okay and they told us about it. We still can't believe how lucky we were. Our original itinerary had us in Washington DC on the 10th and 11th and our hotel was less than a mile from the Pentagon! We are so thankful that we changed our plans at the last minute. And by the time we left on Saturday, our flights were departing without any delays (probably the only time we have ever left on-time). I was in school in my second period class, which is Global Studies. We were learning about the Taliban and Afghanistan. A little bit into class another teacher came into our class and told us to turn on the television. There was a fire in one of the Twin Towers. My teacher, Mrs. Capen stopped class to watch the television. All of a sudden we saw a plane fly directly into the second twin tower. Then the news started saying that a plane may have crashed into the first tower and that's what started the fire. At first I thought it was fake because the teacher started saying that it might be the people she had just taught us about. We watched the television until the bell rang, then we all went to our next class. By then I figured it was real because every one was talking about it. I remembered that my sister was supposed to come back from vacation from California and fly in to New York where this was all happening. I was scared and hoped she was okay. My next class was gym and we started watching the events until we were all ready to go out side to play football. I played football, which kept my mind off the terrible news, and then came back into the school and watched the news. I saw the towers were still on fire. Then the first tower collapsed! It was gone! The bell rang so I went to my next class. In the halls there was a lot of talk about the twin towers. When I got in to my next class, Introduction to Occupations, we watched the news some more and then the second tower collapsed. There was a big hole in the city where two of the tallest buildings once were. The teacher turned off the television and we started class. At the end of class we turned the television back on and saw that the Pentagon was hit. Later in the day I found out it was a terrorist attack organized from the terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden who was associated with the Taliban. I couldn't believe that a fire in the buildings made them collapse. When I got home I found out my uncle was working in the Pentagon when this took place. He was fine though. I think I am lucky, in a sad way that I got to see this historic event all live on the television because this was an act of war on American soil. It was bigger than Pearl Harbor and affected many more people. It was a day I'll never forget and one the world will never forget. I remember a customer coming in and saying that the World Trade Centers have been hit with a plane or a bomb. We quickly turned up the radio and began listening to the horror that was unfolding in New York City. All I could do was pray for all the families that knew of people in the Centers. My sister had passed away in July of that same year and it made me think that God took her because he didn't want her to experience this horrible terror. I thank God today for those brave people on the flight that went down in PA because of them, they saved many lives. Their families should be greatful that they had such caring and loving husbands, fathers, brothers, etc. I pray every day for the people that passed away and for their families. These attacks really brought people together and I feel that this country will be a better place if we stick together and don't take what we have for granted. I had just finished packing up my daughter's stuff so I could get her off to the babysitters and then head to work. I worked for New York & Company, also knowns as Lerners, in the Kitsap Mall, in Silverdale, Washington. As I dropped off my daughter, 2 1/2 year old Mercedes, I breifly heard on the radio about the first plane hitting the trade tower. They joked about it being a terrorist attack. As I pulled into the parking lot of the mall, they screamed "Oh my God another plane has hit the second building." I sat in my car, shocked, angry, and scared. I wasn't just scared for me or my daughter but for my husband, my husband is in the Navy. He was out to sea at the time the buildings and the Pentagon was hit. Of course he and his crew weren't spoken of because they where on a Sub, the USS Ohio. I feared that I'd never see him again, not knowing where all this was going. I said a quick prayer for the families who lost loved ones, for my family, and for America. As my boss and I walked into the mall I told her about what was going on. She was just as shocked and scare as the rest of us. We went into work and proceded with our jobs, when my babysitter called freaking out and scared for her husband and mine. I told her to calm down, to think about the kids, they didn't need to see her upset. So we hung up and about the same time the other manager of the store called to let us know what was going on, and to tell us at that point the Pentagon had been hit. We stood there looking at each other dumpfounded. We continued with our work and what seemed like moments later the manager called back again and told us the First Trade Tower, Second to be hit, had collasped. At that point we rushed into the break room and turned on the T.V. to watch the news. My first reaction after seeing it, was to call my Mother who lives in Orlando, Florida. She works in a tower, a court house downtown. But they had evacuted. I was glad. :) But at the same time scared. A few moments later the security officers at the mall told us to evacute. As we gathered up our stuff I called my babysitter to inform her I was coming home. She told me at that time the Naval Sub Base Bangor wasn't letting the school buses on. See we all lived on the Sub Base. I told her seeing that I was off base already I'd pick up her daughter and her neighbors daughter. So when we finally left the mall, I went to the girls school and picked them up. They where very confused to see me. They wondered where their Mommy's were. I just told them,"Some bad things have happened and I'm taking you home to your Mommys." They smiled. As we approached the base the line to get on the base was very long. We sat there for an hour waiting to go home. I wanted to see my daughter and I know my friends wanted theirs. We finally got to the gate and the Marines and Navy men inspected my car, went through everything to make sure no bombs or nothing was getting onto the base. I was scared and so was the girls but the Guys where great. Once I finally got to the babysitters house, the first thing I did was grab Mercedes and hug and kiss her. We sat down and I finally got to see the actual footage of the planes hitting the building. Mercedes, at the time was 2 1/2, asked me "Mommy, what happened." How do you explain to a 2 year old about bad people. I couldn't I just hugged her. I have never felt so many emotions at once, fear, haterd, toward the people who did this, love, disbelief, helplessness. One thing I do know, is I'm proud to say I'm so glad the action was taken right away, meaning, the way they handled the base, yes at times it was fustrating, but I felt safe. The way President Bush reacted, right away he wasn't going to deal with terrorist. I'm very proud to be an American today and everyday after September 11th 2001. I'm glad my husbands in the Navy, even though he's not over there fighting, but he's still serving his country and that makes me very Proud and honored to be an American......God Bless America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on the telephone with a parent when I saw the rest of our staff gathered around our television set. When I finished my call, I went to where everyone was standing and was told that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Most, if not all of us, thought it was an accident but within a few minutes the second plane went into the second building and we all know the we were under attack. After the initial shock, my thoughts quickly centered on my daughter Michele who works two blocks from where the planes hit. I called her office and was told she had not arrived. I tried to remain calm but I began praying and hoping that she was okay. Was she hit by the falling pieces of the plane or the building? I called my youngest daughter who worked on the 45th floor of the first building until a year and one-half ago when she took a position in mid-town. Christine couldn't reach Michele either. I called Michele's office a second time and was told she had just arrived. She was in tears as she spoke to me of what she had seen, especially the people falling or jumping out of the upper floors. As I was trying to comfort her, she said that there was a tremendous noise and that a third plane was hitting the buildings. This, of course, was the first building collapsing. At this point she asked me what should she do. I was afraid to tell her to leave her office and run to the Brooklyn Bridge to try to get to our home in Queens because I was afraid the second building would collapse on her. I also didn't want to advise her to stay in her office for fear that her 4 or 5 story building might crumble from the impact of the second building falling. Somehow I know it was going down as well. I suggested that she try to remain calm, go outside and try to get some direction from a policeman or fireman. I asked that she call me back to let me know what she was doing. It was about 30-40 minutes before I heard from her. She was fine. She had gone outside where some firemen were ushering people back into the basement of her building. They knew or sensed that the second building was going down and wanted to protect people in the best way they knew how. Michele said that the basement was rumbling as the building fell, but that it was able to withstand the shock. She said she was going to try to make it to the Bridge but might not be able to call me for a while. Meanwhile back at our school I tried going into the halls and comforting some of the students who were upset. One of my seniors was visibly concerned because his mom had dropped him off before 8 a.m. on her way to a meeting at the trade center. He couldn't reach her on her cell phone. The parents of many of our students came to pick them up, but many also remained and talked with their friends while watching the events in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on television. I announced to as many as I could reach that I was available if any one wanted to talk or use my telephone to reach a loved one All the while, however, I kept thinking of Michele. Was she okay? When would she get home? When would I hear from her? Christine told me she was going to walk over the 59th Street Bridge. My middle daughter Diane is a nurse at a hospital in Queens. I couldn't contact her but knew that she would be on call for the injured. Every time I thought about the dead and injured, especially the heroic firemen, tears came to my eyes. I was supposed to be strong and comforting and be helping others. I tried but was also shocked and frightened about the safety of my family and fellow New Yorkers. I left school about one-half hour early and had to take the Tappan Zee Bridge because all the other bridges were closed for emergency vehicles. It took me about three and one- half hours, about one and one-half hours on the bridge alone to get home. Even though they are in their twenties, I always hug and kiss my daughters when coming or going but I never hugged them the way I did that night. The next morning I got up hoping that this had all been a bad dream, but it wasn't. We all went to church and prayed and cried a little more. I pray each day for the victims on the plane, in the building and on the ground and for the heroic firefighters, policemen and emergency workers who lost their lives trying to help them. But, beore I get into that I first of all want to express my deepest sympathy to those families and friends who lost loved ones in any of the three terror attacks. I can only imagine what is must be like to have that happen. I was working like normal when my friend came in and said a plane had hit the WTC, I thought to myself surely that must be a mistake,then I went to where we had the TV on CNN and I saw the second plane hit. I could hardly believe my eyes. I was shocked. President Bush was only a few miles away in Sarasota getting ready to ready to the kids. That day has changed my life forever. I have a friend who works for the Disaster Unit for THE SALVATION ARMY in Tampa, FL.and he was called to go to New York City to help out. I talked to him when he came back and the stories were unreal. I remember going to church the next Sunday after the attach and so many people there, it has been felt by everyone. I have cried many times when I see pictures, read stories hear songs like " Proud to be an American " . I spent the next six hours scanning the television stations for any reports that would calm my fears. I was driving to Detroit, Michigan that day and I needed some kind of reassurance. As I drove along I-94 from the northshore of Chicago to Detroit, I passed by dozens of flags at half mast. While I was still driving the car, I took a picture of every flag that I saw that day. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, as on other work days, my wife Pearl commutes from Brooklyn to her job at the headquarters building of District Council 37, the municipal employees union. Pearl typically gets off the IRT subway at Fulton Street, one stop early, in order to add a few paces to her walk to work. The Council is located at 125 Barclay Street, on the corner of West Street, one block north of the World Trade Center. She gets to her desk before 8:30 in the morning. My son Danny's first class at Stuyvesant High School is at 8:45. Stuyvesant is located four blocks north of the Trade Center. About half an hour after Pearl arrived at work, a little before 9, a coworker came up to her office on the third floor crying and referring to what would be the first of the two plane crashes. Pearl tried to comfort the woman; they took a brief walk her outside, then Pearl returned to her office. At this point in time, nobody at the union had a clear idea of the dimensions of the disaster. Then the second plane crashed. Pearl's sister Marion called to tell Pearl to get out of the building. A call followed from the woman Pearl just comforted; the woman also urged Pearl to leave the building. With presence of mind, she went about the office telling the few colleagues who had already arrived to leave work. When an office manager asked her who told her to tell people to leave, she said "I told people to leave." Pearl avoided Barclay Street, and left from the building's north entrance on Park Place. Soon Barclay Street would fill with smoke. She headed three blocks north along West Street to Chambers Street, to where Stuyvesant is located. Parents began arriving at the school. After a short delay, she took Danny out of school. The school was keeping the kids in place for the time being but allowing parents who showed up to take their kids out of school. When they started to walk north, away from the disaster, Danny became worried that I would travel downtown to look for him and Pearl. He decided to call my City College phonemail. I was teaching--at a nearby institution--and I would surely check my phonemail as is my habit. He left a message indicating that he and Pearl were safe, and that they were walking to my sister-in-law's apartment on West 90th Street. I am thankful that they would get word to me. I teach a biostatistics course on Tuesday mornings, beginning at 9:00, up at the medical center at 168th Street, in northern Manhattan. Perhaps about 30 minutes into the class, a woman named Sharon walked into the classroom to tell me and everyone else that a plane crashed into the Trade Center. Given the timing, we must have been one of several groups of people she visited. Many of us in the class thought it was an accident of a smaller scale of magnitude than what turned out to be. Sharon returned to the class about ten minutes later to tell us a second plane crashed into the Trade Center; there was the implication that this was a terrorist attack reminding us of the attack on the World Trade Center eight years earlier. I was shaken. My wife and son are in lower Manhattan, near the Trade Center. I dismissed the class. I found a phone. I called Pearl at her office but got no answer. Then I called my phonemail at City College. Danny left a message that was reassuring. He said they were alright and were heading on foot uptown to Marion's apartment on West 90th Street. He said in the phone message that they could not travel to Brooklyn because the subways stopped running. I stopped by an auditorium located in the building in which I teach. A news account of the attack and its aftermath was being broadcast on a large television screen. Soon I became more aware of the dimensions of the tragedy taking place that day. I then left the building. I saw a downtown bus at 168th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. I boarded. As I was riding downtown, I found in my jacket pocket a Sony walkman that I had forgotten that I taken had taken with me when I left the house that morning--both Pearl and I left the house extra early in order to vote in the primary election which was being held that day. I began listening to the radio. I was following the events, and relaying to other passengers the latest news items. But I also began to think about my daughter Emily. I anticipated that Emily, who had recently begun college and was some distance from home, must be just learning about the terrible news, and would be very worried. I got off the bus at 116th Street and Broadway. I walked quickly the short distance to the main Columbia University library. I looked for a computer. I found a bank of PCs. I asked a student to let me use his ID in order to pass through to my AOL account. He obliged me when I explained why I needed to use the computer. I sent an email to Emily telling her that Pearl and Danny were okay, and will soon be at Marion's house. Emily had learned of the attack. She had emailed me only 10 minutes earlier--she was in a panic about our safety. It was fortunate that I reached her. Although there was some local phone service, long distance service was nonexistent at that moment. Email proved to be a dependable way to communicate long distances. While Pearl had briefly stopped to wait on a line in order to make a telephone call, Danny, who had kept turning around to look at the disaster while they were walking uptown, turned around once more and observed the Trade Center towers collapse. He witnessed people flying out of windows. It was awful. He worried that one of the towers collapsed on his high school, perhaps killing his schoolmates. They were about half a mile north of the disaster at that moment. Although they walked about a mile north disaster to Houston Street, they managed to get a cab for the rest of the journey to 90th Street, which was helpful because Danny had broken his right foot in a soccer game ten days earlier. While they were traveling in the cab up West Street, Pearl observed groups of teenagers walking uptown. She told Danny that they had to be Stuyvesant kids. She wanted to disabuse him of the idea--at least for the moment--that a tower collapsed on the school building. Of course, a number of hours later we were sure the towers hadn't collapsed on the high school. The next day when we were settled at home we got Daniel to write about his experience. He wrote a moving yet clear-eyed account of the day. In the late morning, I met Pearl, Danny, and Marion at Marion's apartment. I got there about 15 minutes after Pearl and Danny arrived. We were extremely grateful to be together. While at Marion's I received an email from Emily, acknowledging word that we were okay. She wrote that she was going to give blood. We have been keeping an eye on Daniel; thus far he seems fine given what happened. On Monday September 17, we fulfilled a promise we had made to him earlier this summer. We moved Danny into the room that was Emily's, a move to which he looked forward for a long time. Danny, Pearl, our friend Stan, Danny's friends Robin and Gus, and I spent Friday and part of the weekend rebuilding a section of wall and painting the room blue; it had been pink. We wanted to restore some normalcy to our lives. The following weekend I took him to see the Mets play the Braves. Senator Haigel was right. The events resembled Pearl Harbor. Except this enemy is more elusive. There is a firehouse in my neighborhood, one long and three short blocks from my apartment building. Once I had occasion to call the city's emergency number because I observed smoke coming from the roof of a private house that is next to my building. Firefighters from the neighborhood firehouse arrived in less than a minute from the moment I called. No exaggeration. Our fire department is one of the reasons why New York is a great place to live. And our firefighters are among the best of the best people you can find in New York. The attack on the Trade Center led to the death of half of the 27 firefighters assigned to the neighborhood firehouse. A firehouse in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn lost everyone. Marion saw immediately that the attack had a Middle Eastern imprint: First there is a strike aimed at killing civilians and drawing rescuers to the site the attack; then there is a second strike ten minutes later that is not only aimed at killing additional civilians but is also aimed at killing rescuers. Such losses make me heartsick and angry. On Friday, September 21, the last day of summer, Pearl and I visited lower Manhattan. The site of the attack reminded me that Pearl's parents lived in London throughout the blitz. And like the aggressors in the blitz, these perpetrators of the attack on New York and Washington represent Nazism. The evidence is clearly available. The Times reported on September 22 that a Urdu-language, Pakistani newspaper sympathetic to bin Laden wrote that, to quote The Times, "Jews were responsible for the attacks on the United States." A reprint of a Middle Eastern newspaper found in Peshawar, Pakistan reported that although 4000 Jews held jobs at the Trade Center none were killed because of advance information in their possession. Like the Nazis, the bin Laden sect commits odious acts of evil, and projects the evil in its heart onto a conspiracy of Jews. Like the Nazis, they require on the part of the host population blind conformity although in the case of the Taliban host it is conformity to rules about beard length in men and the absence of schooling for girls. Finally, they are the equivalent of Nazis in the sense that the World Trade Center became a crematorium, a killing ground for the slaughter of innocent people. The grey ash we have seen covering parts of New York surely contains a mixture of incinerated building materials and the incinerated remains of victims who did nothing more than try to earn their bread or save lives. I want to see justice done to the individuals whose aim it was to launch the attacks on New York and Washington, the Cole, and our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Tragedy Tuesday September 11, 2001. Terrorist attacked our nation. I was in Barker Central School sitting in Earth Science talking to my friends when I over heard my teachers saying that a plane had just flown into the World Trade Center. It was around 8:00 in the morning. I was only 15 years old and had no clue what the World Trade Center were until I say the building show up on the TV. and then we saw the second plane fly into the building. The news showed people jumping for their lives because they had no way out of the burring buildings. Then the bottom of the screen said pentagon on fire. Then they showed the mall and all of the smoke coming from it. They could not show us the actual buildings because no planes were allowed over Washington D.C. and they could no get up to the buildings. To be on the safe side they evacuated all of the major government buildings. The president of the United States was in Florida. They flew him back to the white house then took him to a safe spot to hide for a little bit. There was another plane that crashed in Pennsylvania that they thought people tried to fight back with. The planes that hit the towers were going to California so they knew that they were full of fuel. When I first heard about all of this I thought that it was not real but it just never went away and I just figured out that it would not go away. It was real as real as real can be. An hour after the planes had crashed the buildings fell to the ground because of weak structure. The heat from the fire weakened the structure. Some three hundred rescue workers were crushed not all of them have been found. During this tragic incident 19,ooo people were injured killed or missing. Hey showed the building burning and people running for their lives. They said that some people called home because they could not get home because they were on the top floors of the buildings. About eight hours later the world trade center building seven and fallen because the structure had also been weakened. The day afterwards it was the talk of the country. When I heard that the pentagon had been hit I was worried because my aunt had told me she was going to get a job there but she did not. What was really shocking was that the plane that went into the pentagon was meant for the White House. The date that the attacks happened was 9-11-01. (nine one one) 911. That was so shocking that they used our own planes as weapons and innocent live as bait. They used a plane as a weapon something that barely anyone would thing of as being a weapon. But as you begin to think about it people are saying that we had warnings but not saying exactly what they were going to do. Just saying that they were going to attack the Unites States. That this would happen but we just ignored it. But I guess we should have tacking some notice to that because we could have prevented this if we just would have started to be more secure about the way we do things. Now months later we are checking people in the airports they have to take off their shoes to get checked. They also have to go through a tremendous amount of security. If you want to fly somewhere you have to get to the airport at least an hour early. There are troops in Afghanistan; they have been there for a long time now. They thing Asmo Bin Laden is dead but they don't know for sure. The news is saying that they are trying to get DNA samples from his family to find out. I personally do not think that this should not have happened because we did not go over there and bomb them because of their religion. We can get over and past that. The fact that they killed innocent people and people from other nations are is just wrong they should have never done this. I ran in thinking something had happened to her and I saw the first plane in the building. I thought it was an accident and my mom said no way..it was terrorist. We both watch and wondered why and how. Then the second plane hit. I broke down. I couldnt believe it. It was the saddest thing ive ever seen. Being so far away I felt helpless and I just wanted to be able to do something...anything. I sent things to red cross..as much as I could. I gathered donations from my neighborhood. It still gets to me thought. My now husband's birthday is Sept. 11. He hates his birthday. But we just watched a few programs about 9/11. We both had tears in our eyes. A patient called to tell us that the airplane had just struck the first twin tower. Everyone was upset, but they kept their cool, since we didn't know whether it was just an accident or terrorism. After the second twin tower and the pentagon was struck, everyone panicked. My mother-in-law called me, crying, because she was scared they would take her two sons into battle. At that particular moment, it hit me that I could lose my family. I have already lost my parents and several aunts and uncles. Now, I was afraid they would draft my husband, his brother, and also my brother. The thought hit me that my son could grow up without a father, the way I did. I was sickened. I imagined myself having to run things on my own without my husband, and I put myself in the place of the women who did lose their husbands that day. I was so grief-stricken. I could not believe that someone could hate so much that they could destroy innocent human lives, for no apparent reason. I will never forget where I was, or how I felt on September 11, 2001.
