I was in the process of sorting mail when I heard on the radio that one of the towers at the World Trade Center was hit by a plane. Another co-worker had come into my office and had said she heard the same thing. I thought it was bizarre that a plane could become off course and hit the trade center, but went back to going through the mail. Not long after that, the same co-worker came down to say that the second tower was hit by another plane. My heart fell, I knew. My 17 year old son had joined the Navy in January of 2001 and had done basic training and had done his special training and was stationed at Norfolk, Va. He was scheduled for a routine 6-month deployment on the USS Theodore Roosevelt. I tried immediately to reach William on his cell phone and couldn't get through, I then immediately called my mother is South Carolina. I knew if he couldn't reach me he would reach her. A while later the phone rang and it was William. He said that the base was on high alert (of course by this time the Pentagon was hit and the plane had gone down in Pennsylvania). Waiting to hear if his deployment was going to change. Hour-to-hour, day-to-day. I knew where they were headed. It was a mother's worst nightmare come true. The Roosevelt pulled out of Norfolk, Virginia on September 19, 2001 headed directly to the Mediterranean to participate in "Operation Enduring Freedom." The Roosevelt traveled down the Suez Canal and to the Persian Gulf, where, on October 16 it relieved the USS Enterprise and joined the USS Carl Vinson in the air strike against the al Qaida terrorist network and Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. The Roosevelt earned awards while they were out on deployment. They broke the record being out to sea for 159 consecutive days without going to port. William returned safely aboard the Roosevelt on March 27, 2002. While he was out to see he turned 18 years old and when he returned to Norfolk he returned as an 18-year old veteran. We now have some time to get ready for the the next 6 month deployment in wartime. I remember during recess another girl in my class came up to me and told me a plane had hit the white house and the president was dead. Obviously, that was wrong but the whole day we were confused about what was happening. Our teachers were all talking to each other and kids were being taken out of class by their parents. None of our teachers would tell us what was happening, we heard them mention the World Trade Center, but i didn't know what it was. It wasn't until i saw the video footage on the news that i knew it was the Twin Towers. I went to a catholic school so in class all we did was pray the rosary. My mom didn't want me in school in all the confusion of what was happening so she picked me up at lunch. My dad works in DC so i was concerned but when i got home he was alread y there, leaving shortly after the plane hit the pentagon. I will never forget 9/11 and it greatly changed the way i thought about the world and other countries. I immediately turned on the T.V., while I was watching, it was true that a plane had hit the tower then as time went on another plane hit the 2nd tower, I woke my son and daughter-in-law because I thought it may be the start of war. We are truly blessed that war didn't take place that day. I pray for all the family that lost love ones on that day. May God bless us all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a librarian/teacher in an affluent bedroom community close to NYC. Many of our parents work in finance and, we learned, a surprising number worked in the WTC itself. I had no class the first period of the day and was preparing to teach a middle-school Latin class when the Assistant Principal came into the library and told me to turn on the television because a plane had hit the WTC. I immediately assumed that it was a small private plane, like the one that crashed into the Empire State Building in the 1940's. It seemed odd though since the day was gloriously clear. I turned on the TV just about 9:00 am. Stupefied, I watched the second plane hit and learned of the attack on the Pentagon. I watched the reports as long as I could but went to my class as usual, trying not to convey to my students the sense that anything was awry. I had two consecutive 40 minutes classes during which concerned parents came to remove their children from school and both of the towers fell. It became impossible to pretend that nothing was wrong and the administration gathered the older children in the gym and explained the situation to them. It was at this point that we began to realize just how many of our students had parents whose daily routines included some time in the Trade Center. Some of the faculty also had spouses who worked at the site. There was no way we could carry on with our normal class schedule, especially given the fact that fighter jets were routinely roaring overhead by this time. The Principal began the laborious process of notifying parents that the school would be closing early. Of course, we are committed to remaining at the school until all of the children are picked up so it was late in the afternoon before we actually were able to leave. By this time, we knew that we had been remarkably lucky. Not one member of our immediate school community was lost. The truly amazing thing was that several of the fathers of our preschoolers would have been at work in the affected areas of the WTC but for the fact that our Tuesday/Thursday preschool classes began that day and several dads had stayed home from work or delayed their departure for the city to see their oldest child's first day at school. While I had never worked in the towers, I had been to Windows on the World, attended meetings there and just strolled through the lobby on my way from the World Financial Center's Palm Court when I took the ferry across the Hudson. Even a year later, it is difficult to wrap my mind around that day. I find it hard to look at the skyline when I am driving to the city. I can't determine where Manhattan ends anymore. The school at which I teach is a parochial one attached to a church with a small graveyard and a recently built mausoleum. Today - 9/11/02 - I had to pull the shades in the library which looks out over that mausoleum. One of our town's 9/11 victims is buried in a crypt that faces our windows. Throughout the day, floral arrangements of rememberance were delivered and I couldn't bring myself to try to explain their significance to the second graders in my class. I was watching the "Today Show" when the first tower was hit at approximately nine minutes before nine. I watched in horror as the news broadcasters suggested possible theories for the plane crash. Then, without a break in the broadcast, I watched as the second plane hit the second tower. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I think the lives of everyone in the United States and throughout the world have changed because of the events of 9/11. We have lost the sense of security and well-being, taken for granted as an American citizen. It is much more believable and possible that innocent people anywhere, at anytime could be destroyed by random or planned acts of terrorists. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? First of all, the cowardly and evil acts committed by people believing they have a right to do this. We should never forget the acts of heroism by NYPD police and firefighters and ordinary citizens. We can never be complacent about our national safety. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes. I can't say that it has because I have always felt the same way about our nation's symbol, whether it be flown on September 11 or Armistice Day or any other day of remembrance. Tell us your story: I was in the hospital NICU feeding my daughter when one of the nurses came in and told us that she had seen on TV that an airplane hit the world trade center. A while later she came back to say that another plane had hit the second tower. I left the nursery to find a TV in the waiting room only to be horrified at what I was watching unfold before my eyes. I left the hospital to find my husband, and had a hard time reaching him. By the time that I contacted him, the first tower had collapsed. He had been in a meeting and had not heard yet. We live in the Capitol of Florida where the Presidents' brother serves as Governor. I feared that we may be next. My husband left work to pick up our son from preschool and take him home. I returned to the hospital to be with my daughter. The worst feeling was having to leave her that night, and the fact that our entire family could not be together in such a time of crisis. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was normal Tuesday morning. I woke up at 5:00am and got ready to go the gym at the office. My wife Carol and I were newlyweds (September 30, 2000). She works in Manhattan but she had taken the day off from work for a doctor's appointment. I had a good workout. I showerd and got dress for work and was at my desk at 8:40am. A colleague came to my desk and said that a plane crashed into one of the Twin Towers. My first reaction was disbelief. I walked over to the other side of my building where you could see the Twin Towers. People gathered, screamed "Oh my God!" and started using their cell phones to call friends and family. I tried to call Carol but I could not get through. I just stood there watching the North Tower surrounded by intense smoke and flames. Then at 9:03am, I saw the second plane crash into the South Tower. People screamed "Oh my God! What happened?". I screamed "A second plane hit the other tower!". I became more upset, angry and scared. A feeling of helplessness overcame me as I watched one of the world's famous landmarks being destroyed right before my eyes. I went back to my desk and tried calling Carol and finally got through. She had been watching the news describing the tragic events that occurred. She was alone and asked when I would be able to come home. I told her that I was all right and as soon as management say it is safe to go home, I will come straight home. Another colleague had a radio on to listen what was happening. Then we heard that a plane crashed into the Pentagon. I had believed that we were at war. Then we heard that another plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Later we heard the South Tower had collapsed. Some time had passed and the North Tower collapsed. It took me three hours to get home. When I got off the train in South Orange, family members were waiting for their loved ones to disembark the train. As I walked home, I started to pray. When I got home, Carol was waiting for me. I thanked God that I was home safe. I thanked God that Carol was safe. I thought of others who didn't make it home at all. I wondered if New York would ever be the same. My deepest sympathy goes out to those who lost family, friends and loved ones. My daughter went off to school and I was off to work. There was nothing on the radio around 7:30am, so I was listening to my CDs. I finally got to work exactly at 8:46am( When the first plane hit the World Trade Center). Normally, our office is buzzing with the latest gossip and work for the day. This day however was different when I walked in and saw everybody with a look of HORROR on there faces. I found out that somebody ran a commercial plane into the WTC, seconds later the other plane hit. I was in shock, thinking this has got to be a mistake someone has made a navigational error. I started thinking, the WTCs are right ahead, noone in their right mind can make such an error, this had to be on purpose. What I felt I didn't want to know, but unfortunately it was true. All of those lives lost, all of those families without there loved ones. All of those fire fighters and police officers LOST. SONS, MOTHERS, FATHERS, DAUGHTERS, NIECES, NEPHEWS, UNCLES, AUNTS, GRANDPARENTS ALL LOST. Only because of those not caring enough about LIFE and how precious it was to those who embraced the life that they had. When I got home that evening, I appologized to my daughter with tears in my eyes and she asked me with those beautiful, slanted, brown eyes and said, "Mommie, why did those people do that?". The only thing that I could say, "Babydoll, I'm sorry that I brought into a world that has no regard for HUMAN LIFE. GOD never intended on HIS children living this way..I am sorry." This hurt my heart to tell my 8 year old that, but she understood as much as she could. What PEOPLE need to understand is that LOVE consquers ALL. A PERSON can understand and feel but some PEOPLE cannot. May GOD be with you and your families. Because I know HE is with mine. Tell us your story: I had lived in either Washington DC or its close-in suburbs for nearly 13 years when 9/11 happened, and worked all of that time downtown. On that horrible day I was at my job on 20th and L streets, about 7 blocks from the White House. I remember how beautiful the day was; thunderstorms the evening before had cleared the air of humidity and clouds - it was one of those fall days in DC that make our hideous summers worthwhile. I had dropped my car off for some work that morning, so I was a little late getting in. Just after I got to my desk I heard a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Figuring it was a really bad private pilot, I did not join the folks going to our offices on the sixth floor (I worked on the fifth) to see our only television. Then a few minutes later I heard that it was two planes, and they were commercial jets. I immediately rushed upstairs, and found most of my colleagues already watching. We didn't talk much, just stood and gaped as the flames poured out of the towers. As each person came in the room, someone would quickly whisper that there had been a terrorist attack and provide other quick details. It's funny, but I don't recall ever feeling concerned about my own safety; this was happening in New York, after all. We heard Bush speak to the nation beginning around 9:30, and I then headed back to my desk. The plane that hit the Pentagon must have impacted right as I was in the concrete stairwell between floors. I felt nothing, but several of my colleagues on the south side of the building (which faced toward the Pentagon about 2 miles away) felt the impact, as all the windows on that side of the building flexed in and out from the shock waves of the explosion. I got to my desk having just heard my name paged overhead, and figured it was my sister, a stay-at-home Mom in New Hampshire; I was right. As I picked up the phone I heard her say "they just hit the Pentagon, what the hell is going on?" She had been watching the Today show, as we had been in my office, and their Pentagon reporter had been giving an update as the building was hit. Promising to keep my cell phone on and with me, I hung up on my sister to check out this latest horror. On my way back up to the sixth floor I encountered two female colleagues, who were both pretty hysterical. They had seen the same report my sister had, and one of the women had two children in the Pentagon's day care center, where her husband worked. Her husband, she knew, was out of the building at an off-site meeting, but she had no way of knowing whether her kids were all right. Thank God the plane hit nearly the exact opposite side of the building from the center. The rest of the day is something of a blur, with wild reports about a car bomb at the State Department, a bomb on Metro, shutting down the rail system and stranding us downtown, another plane on the way to DC. My company decided to evacuate, and shortly after the second tower fell we left; another colleague who lived near me offered me a ride home, as it was clear Metro would not be an option (although it had not been attacked, the system was not prepared for the evacuation of downtown DC - it was nearly impossible to get on a train). I only had to get down 5 flights of stairs that day, and cannot imagine what it was like for those people evacuating the WTC - the sense of panic in the air at my building was frightening enough. There were four of us in the car, and it took 2 1/2 hours to get the seven miles from my office to my apartment (I lived closest, so was first to be dropped off). During the drive, we monitored reports on the 4th hijacked plane and tried to contact the parents of the intern who was in the car (she had recently moved from South Dakota, and could not get her parents at work). We had 4 different cell phones with 4 different providers, and none of us could get a call through. At the same time as this my sister was panicking in New Hampshire after she was no longer able to contact me by phone; she called her husband instead and told him "they're going to kill my brother, I just know it." When I did get home, and could finally call my sister to tell her I was all right, it was unnerving. Television was devoted only to word of the attacks, and the local stations did an amazing job not only covering the attack at the Pentagon, but also the widespread local problems from the virtual desertion of downtown DC. Once the traffic ended in the early afternoon, there was only the sounds of fighter planes above the city, and helicopters circling Walter Reed Army Hospital, which was just south of my apartment in Silver Spring. I didn't sleep much that night or the next with the constant sounds of the aircraft. When we did get back to work, on Thursday, it was to armed National Guard troops on every corner, and a lot of "working through" the events of that day. At my office there were stories of our staff members who had been trapped in other states by the air travel ban (including some in mid-town Manhatten who were thankfully fine). There were also those people who had lost loved ones in the attacks; one woman had three relatives at the WTC still unaccounted for that day. The ex-boyfriend I had at the Pentagon was lucky and got out of the building without a scratch. By that weekend I had heard from others whose stories were not as happy, including the flight attendant who had been good friends with the co-pilot of American 77, which hit the Pentagon. It will never be the same to live in DC, because now we know we live with a target on our backs. The antrax attacks in the city later that fall (not to mention the sniper attacks the next year) added to the stress. I still love the city though, and chose to buy a house here last year. I was in the military at the time and had worked late the night before.I remember getting out of bed taking a shower and was eating breakfast when I saw what was happening on CNN. At first I thought it was some sick movie...but then I went outside and I could hear the moving truck's radio from next door saying the the WTC towers had fallen. I remember thinking this can't be happening! Then on CNN they were saying that they thought some kind of bomb had gone off at the Pentagon...thats when I knew something wasn't right...we were under attack! I remember literally running to put my uniform on and get out the door to report to my unit.I remember calling work and asking if we were still to come in.I worked at another government site at Fort Meade and I didnt know if I still needed to come in or not.At the Time my unit advised that noone knew if any more planes were going to hit. We kept hearing rumors that another plane was headed our way. Fort Meade is very close to DC so you can imagine how hectic it was.Finally they got all the planes grounded and all you could hear in the air were the fighter planes. I will never forget 9-11. You see I work for the Horry County Schools and we have a mini TV station CH12 and ETV (ITFS) for educaitonal programming only. I was on the phone with a DELC call of 50 DELC TV studieo throught our the state of South Caroloina. The peron conducting the phone call was in his car along with another person. This call always takes place every Tuesday morning at 9:00 am. About a minute before 9 I logged onto the call and I heard someone say turn your TV to CNN. I did and at first it looked like someting you would see in a movie. I thought what the )@(#$*)(% is going on. I then said listen I gotta go, cause all you could hear on the phone was things like Oh My God!, Look at that, or What the ! was that. The 2 gentlemen in the car couldn't even fatham what was happening. So I hung up the phone and started listening to CNN and at the same time getting my husband on the phone and tring to explain to him what I was seeing on TV. My husband was thinking like me at first that some airplane must of had some kind of mechicanl problem. We disccussed it a little and got off the phone. As I sat there and continued to watch TV and then all of a sudden seen another plan crash in to the Trade Center again. Then within minutes heard about the plan crashing into the Pentago and then a plan going down in Penn. I reliezed by then we were under some kind of attack. I started cring and tring to get my husband on the phone. He still couldn't understand the impact of what was happening to the United States. I was so upset that I had to turn of the TV's I couldn't listen anymore. Like most american's I was in a blank state the rest of the day. Wondering what in the world is going on and who is doing this to us. As I rushed home to the turn the TV along with the rest of my family. For the next 5 days we all stayed glued to the TV like most americans. I remerber telling my Family that on Saturday there would be NO TV! turned on in our house. It was hard for me to watch my family as they wondered were they safe anywhere and what am I suppose to do to help now. Like most of the world "our lives have changed" and "our love for each other"! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I got to the office at around 8:30 A.M. I had not had time to turn on my radio. One of my co-workers came out into the front reception area as soon as he heard the news of the 1st attack. I immediately turned on my radio and it seemed like only minutes has passed and the announcer was saying that the Trade Center was crashed into by an airplane, at first we thought it was the same story but soon realized they were talking about the second tower. At that point, I think all of us were in shock and awe. Our company employs about 50 people and we were all tuned to the nearest radio and one TV in the conference room. I cannot describe the feelings that I felt, and still feel today as we commorate the 1st anniversary. I cried many times today. Hearing our Govenor speak today, Daniel Rodriquez singing, You'll Never Walk Alone, Celene Dion, doing God Bless America in the true fashion of Kate Smith. I will never forget. In June of 2001, I moved to Miami, Florida two months after my wedding, and two months later found out I was expecting. On the morning of September 11th, I was driving to work with my sister when we heard on the news that a plane crashed into the North Tower of thr World Trade Center in NYC. Being New Yorkers ourselves, we immediately wondered how a plane could accidently hit one of the twin towers. Calling the pilots "blind", our nonchalant attitude ended abruptly when they announced a second plane hit, this time the south tower. I dropped her off at her job in Bacardi, USA, and headed to South Beach to mine at Sony Music. There, I saw the worst. All the televisions on my floor were tuned into the news, and what I saw made my heart stop. When the first tower fell, I was in too much shock to react. To me, one of the twin towers falling was unimaginable. It just didn't happen. When the second fell, the gray haze of reality and denial set in. Those towers just didn't fall. They were the Twin Towers. Landmarks. Two skyscrapers that New Yorkers have taken for granted for years. So implanted in the New York skyline that you almost didn't even notice them anymore. I couldn't believe it. Then the Miami panic set in. Everyone started running around, swearing South Florida was next. Amidst all of that, I was trying to find my friends and mother who were all unreachable as cellphone networks were all down. An hour or two later, we were allowed to leave, whereupon my husband picked me up and we drove home, passing the toll booth that waived us through without at fee, passing the cars on the highway, all drivers tuned into the radios with expressions of shock written on their faces. That night, after the dust had settled and all of our loved ones were home safe and sound, the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack on American soil unwound. The people that were missing started to be counted, like Lieutenant William "Billy" C. McGinn, a friend of my husband's who was located and laid to rest a month later. The body count rose as did the heartache. Over three thousand dead after the attack on the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania. Two years later, I still can't keep a dry eye hearing a story, or recounting an event from that day. As much as it pains me to remember what happened, what occurred in my city and my country, I hope that that feeling never goes away. I never want to be able to think of that day and not cry. Because then it means I will never, ever forget what happened. And I hope no one else will, ever. I am attending Arizona State University and my family lives in a suburb of San Francisco so I was very concerned for their safety. fortunately, I was able to contact them and I was assured that they were safe. Although I don't normally watch a lot of television but I found myself riveted to the t.v. Classes were cancelled so I stayed watching the coverage for two whole days. About a week after 9/11a woman came to my church. Shhe had lived by it for many years but had never been there.She told the church she was there becaus she was looking for answers.She said that her best friend Will had died in the Pentagon.She was so upset and she was crying. This woman I had never met had a huge impact on my life and my way of thinking. It was too far out to grab and put in our reality. Throughout the day most students and staff found out what happened. People were crying, hugging, so unsure of what to do. Many people in the school including myself have family that live in Manhattan. The phone lines were jammed to Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. We couldn't get through to our family, no one could. I had found out that my cousin was working across the street at the moment the first tower collapsed. She fled for safety and only some debris fell on her. My other cousin's school was evacuated; it was mass chaos everywhere. This day will be forever burned in my brain..so many people died..so many people lost ones that they loved. The fact that some people in the world would do such an awful and destructive thing scares me. There were so many programs on tv that kept on replaying the collapse of the towers. There are still so many radio shows that talk about this event and tv specials on what "really" happened. Ofcourse we should all remember this day in history; in honor of the ones we love and lost. However, it hurts to remember that day. My eyes fill up with tears and i feel such a patriotic feeling towards my country. I went to sleep last night wondering if i would be typing this right now. At the time of the incident I was not aware that the country was under a terrorist attack, until I heard some commotion coming from the corridors of the school. When I found out what had happened, my knees buckled and my eyes got watery because my wife worked in the six World Trade Center building, which is the customs house, as a federal agent trainee for the IRS. Her shift started at 9:00am so I had the terrible feeling that my wife was in the building. I came out of the classroom and I tried calling my wife but there was no answer. I completely lost my mind and I ran out of the school and drove to the World Trade Center site. Little did I know that I was not going to get anywhere closer than a mile from the site. I left the car and ran as fast as I could toward the towers in aid of my wife. When I got close to the site I was stopped by law enforcement officers who had sealed the area so that people like me would not get through. I was devastated and crying because I felt the worse. I pleaded with the officers to let me go by so that I could help my wife who worked in one of the towers. After about an hour of crying and full of dust and particles from the air, I heard from my wife, she had called me and she told me that she was alright. At that moment I became the happiest man alive, I must have thank God a million times. I then ran back to my car and drove home. After I got home, I embraced my wife and together we cried and thanked God. My wife couldn't stop crying and she kept telling me how she had just escaped death. She explained to me that she was lucky because she had arrived to the building around 9:00am and as she was walking, she realized that something was wrong. She saw the north building on fire and people jumping out from the building. She explained to me how she was crying and feeling for those people who were jumping and for those who were stuck and couldn't get out. She did not realize what was happening, she thought that it was just a fire but nothing more. She realize that something was wrong because she saw how the plain dove into the other tower. She explained to me how she then started running because debris was falling down from the tower after the explosion. She told me that she ran for her life and ducked under a canopy for cover. After the debris had fallen she ran past the #4 and #5 train because it was too crowded and went to the #2 and #3 train and came home. When she got home, she turned on the television and tuned in to the news and realized that our country was under terrorist attack. Throughout the day and days after that, she kept reliving the scenery of the people jumping from the tower and of the plane hitting the other tower. The federal government had to sent her for therapy so that she could overcome that terrible tragedy. Although months have passed, she at times cries when she sees pictures of the 9/11 incident. This included the end of summer time, Labor Day, and back to school the kids. This was back then, now September has taken on a whole new meaning. The image of terror and panic in New York, along with the Twin Towers crumbling before the world will be forever burned in my memory. This one event in time was so powerful that years from now people will ask my generation "Where were you when the Twin Towers fell?". This generation will be defined by that one moment in time. The alarm goes off and I immediately hit the snooze button. It was the first couple days of school and I was definitely still in my summer sleeping habits. I gave anything for those extra couple minutes of sleep. Of course eventually I got up out of bed thinking that it was just another day that ultimately just led to the next and made it one day closer to being summertime again. This all changed in just a couple of hours. I was in my gym class in Mclean High School, we weren't doing anything just hanging around. I was sitting down talking to some people I had just met, suddenly out of nowhere a kid comes running in screaming "The Twin Towers have just been hit!!". I'll admit that I didn't pay any attention to that kid only because only because it sounded to unbelievable to believe. My opinion of this changed immediately though when a teacher comes running in the gym wheeling with her a television. She put on one of the hundreds of channels that were broadcasting the events. Out of nowhere everyone rushes around the television trying to comprehend what was really going on, and those in the far back were jumping up and down trying to catch a peek of the television images. I managed to make my way to the front to see the tv nice and well. I couldn't believe what was happening. Smoke was pouring out of one of the Twin Towers, and at the bottom of the screen it kept flashing messages that it had been hit by a hijacked airplane. Minutes later a second plane slowly approached the second tower and exploded into flames, everyone who could see the tv screen at that point was mortified including myself. No one knew why this things were happening and now weren't sure if they were over. Of course we all know now that it wasn't over, the horrifying scenes of people jumping out of the Twin Towers began to happen and then of course there was the hit on the Pentagon that was so close to home. Everyone was panicking at that point and the whole school was now questioning the safety of the nation. I couldn't understand why anyone would do this America, and how they had the conscience to kill thousands of people. I think these questins plagued every American over the next couple of weeks. Of course the road to recovery was a long one. Every generation has some key moments that future generations who weren't alive through them all want to know about it.
