Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was out in Wilkes-Barre to travel to a remote auditee with a fellow auditor. When we got to the site, they had a small black/white television and it was showing the WTC and on a split screen the Pentagon. I thought at first it was some sort of ad or preview for a movie, then, I realized with horror and fear it was real!! From then on, all discussion became about updates on the situation. Eventually, I and my fellow auditor we called and told to leave the audit site and go home. On our return journey to Wilkes-Barre, we listened over and over to all the news available on NPR. I became more and more horrible. Then, when I got to an actual television, I just started crying. Then, later, I wanted to rush out and try to give blood, but I was totally unfamiliar with Wilkes-Barre and knew I would get lost, etc. Therefore, I felt totally useless. Finally, after listening to the President and all the news stations until 11 p.m, I went to sleep. It was not a restful sleep, I was fearful of all that had been familiar and safe the day before. It wasn't until about an hour later that we figured out that planes had been flown into the two structures. A little while later we were told of other attacks and Flight 93. I spent the rest of the day with my high school students watching the television trying to understand what was going on. We had an assembly at the end of the day where we prayed for the victems and their families. Before leaving school to go home, I called my husband to ask him to stay off the express ways and take the back roads home from work. I circled Sept. 11 in my lesson plan book and wrote my thoughts on what had happened. I left school and drove straight home to wait for my husband. We watched the news reports the rest of the day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember I was in my car listening to the radio when I heard about the first World Trade Center building being hit. I was on my way to visit an old high school teacher. On the 20 minute drive down there I listened as the second building was hit. I was horrified I couldn't believe what was happening. I was a freshmen in college and I really didn't pay much attention to the terriost that attack America throughout the years. When I finally arrived at my old high school I ran up to the class room and turned on the television. My teacher was on her planning period so the room was empty except for me and her. I was telling her about my drive out there and how I listened to the radio as the towers were hit, then there was another shocking attempt to crush the American pride; the Pentagon was hit. Luckily it wasn't hit straight on, but was some how detoured to the side. The two of us sat at a desk in disbelievment. My teacher tried franticly to call her friend who lived in the city and as everyone remembers all the lines were quite busy. She also tried to call her mother, so her mother wouldn't worry that she was hurt. I remember walking through the halls and watching as students and teachers alike ran to a widow and tried franticlly to call there loved ones who worked in the Pentagon. With tears rolling down each and everyone of their faces, I felt a small feeling of relief knowing that my family was far from the two attack areas. But then my relief was taken away by all the hurt and saddness I knew the others were going through. When I got back home, I called my parents who told me to stay there and make sure all the kids got home from school okay and to let them know that they had to stay inside. The phone calls just kept coming in making sure I was okay and making sure that my family and friends were doing okay. My sister was telling me stories of kids in her homeroom who began cheering as the rest of America ran in terror and cried for their loved ones. I couldn't believe their lack of sensitivity for the rest of the vitims and their families. I couldn't believe my own angry. I wasn't very patriot before all of this happened but soon after I began telling people how proud I was to be an American. I cannot wait until that bastard Bin Ladin is captured and gets whats coming to him. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was at work. I work for the City of Chicago at the Administrative Hearings Facility. While we were in our offices getting prepared to have court sessions for the different municipalities we heard over the radio that there had been an attack on the Twin Towers in New York and that there maybe a act of terriorism on the City of Chicago especially Sears Towers, large office buildings in the Loop area and City facilities. Everyone was crying and alarmed. An overwhelmingly number of phone calls flooded our phone lines in all departments cancelling their court dates because they were scared to come to court fearing that our facility might be under attack. There is usually a large number of Arab cab drivers that come to court everyday, but, on that particular day not one of them showed up. It was as if someone knew what was going to happened and alerted everyone else and they (Arab) taxicab drivers were not around at all. Staff members and court officials noticed that and we all got very alarmed because we figured if they did not show then what possibly could have planned for our City building. Many parents and friends called and asked that we leave the building, but, some of stayed with the grace of God that there would not be a tragedy at our Administrative Hearing City of Chicago Bulding. Our mayor did in fact close down some City of Chicago facilities. One thing I must say is that at our facility our security was on guard and City of Chicago Police and Fire Personnel were on point. At first I was nervous, but I received a phone call from my mom who is a Holy woman and she prayed for me and my co-workers and said that God was with us and we had nothing to fear. I immediately felt a calm for myself and began to weep for others who's family mambers were in the Twin towers and the air planes that had crashed. We Chicagoans have been deeply affected by this horific episode. Our hearts, souls and prayers go out to anyone who was a victim, family member or friend of the people who lost their lives on this day. We will never forget this day or any other where people have lost their lives at the hands of someone else. When I walked into my office, a fellow employee told me what happened. I immediately knew that this attack was unlike any attack that the U.S. had experienced in the past, including Pearl Harbor. I immediately felt that the devastation on the World Trade Center by merging the two major symbols of our economy was a was a symbol of the devastation of our economy; of our life in the U.S. as we had known it; that nothing would ever be the same. I spoke these feelings to my co-workers who did not understand the signficance of what I had said. For that matter, neither did I. My perceptions were based upon feelings. I knew we had experienced another "Pearl Harbor". My perceptions and observations proved true over the past five years, and has altered Life in the U.S. on many levels and merged our country into another terrible war. Certainly for all of the survivors whose family members perished on 9/11/01, life will never be the same. My greatest desire is that everyone -- our entire global population -- will learn the lesson once and for all -- that nothing good ever comes from war! The site loaded slowly and it reported that a small Cessna type plane had crashed into the WTC. Later it was confirmed that the plane was a large passenger plane. When the second plane hit something caused me to go outside. Along with hundreds of other people just standing in the middle of 5th. Ave. looking southward (traffic had COMPLETELY srtopped) we watched the plume of smoke coming from the south tower fall as the building gave way. I ran back inside in hysterics and later, now listening to a radio, heard of the second tower falling, the Pentagon, and the plane crash in PA. Around 12:00 I walked uptown, met my fiance, and we walked, with thousands of others, across the Queensbourough bridge. At home the news was turned on and remained on for the next few days. That footage played over and over. So many more details but that is the jist of my experience. I still can't wrap my mind around what happened. Tell us your story: I was sitting at my desk at work when one of my colleagues came into the office informing us that a plane had crashed in America. At first I thought, "God how awful" and continued with my work. A little while later it emerged that another plane had crashed and that it could well be a terrorist attack. I didn't quite understand what was happening, but was quite eager to get home to watch the news to get the full story. My dad was glued to 'Sky news' when i got home. I sat down and was amazed and shocked at the scenes I was watching. Planes crashing into the towers, smoke, fire, firemen everywhere....It was just so sad. It's coming up to the 2nd anniversary of 9/11 and it stil only feels like it happened yesterday. One of my best friends visited America for 6 months this year and couldn't bring herself to go to where the twin towers once stood. I don't know if I could, although I would love to go there to pay my respects to those who died, and especially thoses who died saving others. I just hope we never witness anything as horrific and unjustified as this, ever again. Tell us your story: I was driving to a Mothers Of Preschoolers (MOPS) meeting and heard that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. The radio program was Bob & Tom, and because of the nature of their show, I assumed it was a joke. As I arrived at the house we were meeting at, I asked if we could turn on the TV to see what was going on. I can only tell you that there was just sheer disbelief in that room. We turned off the TV so we could start the meeting. We gathered in a circle to pray. After the meeting I went home and watched in shock. At the time, I was the young mother of a 4 and 9 month old. I found myself in a daze. How could I ever explain what was happening to the older one? His daddy was in Las Vegas on a business trip and was supposed to come home that day. We ended up waiting 5 days for him to come home. I could only be thankful that he WAS coming home. Because of the horrific acts, I could only pray that God would reach his gentle hands down to comfort those who had survived and all the families. My heart went out to the families that lost loved ones. My hope is that through love, faith, compassion, charity, fellowship, and tolerance; we will come together as a nation and make things good again. I will never forget. Never forget the sight of the planes hitting the towers. Never forget the towers falling. Never forget the people wandering on the streets showing pictures of their loved ones who were missing. Never forget the rescue workers digging through the rubble. Never forget what the Pentagon looked like with the huge hole in it. Never forget the name Osama Bin Laden. My brothers were to fly in on the 13th but were unable to do so because of the airport closures. The celebration took place with other family members and friends but my brothers' presence was missed. Our story in no way compares with the tragic losses experienced by so many, but it illustrates the impact this event had on all our lives. As a retired Army personnel officer, I also knew two of the soldiers killed at the Pentagon site. We will never forget this day. Tell us your story: this may seem as just another story to alot of people, but it is my story, it saved my life. sometimes litle things have the power to change to course of life, and this is one of them. my name is Tomer , i'm from israel. on september the 11th, i was suppose to be on the highest floor posible of the WTC with my girlfried. we were on a trip(her first) to NY . we planned everything right, we staied at my oncle's and we were suppose to be on route to the twins at 7:30 am. summer time, beautifull day....i am a 23 year old who has never been sick in his life, and i mean never!!! went to the doctor once a year just to calm the parents. that day i woke up with the most horrible pain in the throught. never felt it burn like that before, no fever or head ech, just burning throught. I told my girlfriend "let's sleep for another houre , we'll get up than and leave , even if i still dont feel that good" i didnt want to ruin her day. we woke up an houre later, my throught was fine, no paine, not even a signe of it. i was getting ready to leave when my oncle called me and told me the city was under atack. i went to the window and i could see all of it from there. horrible pictures, hell in the middle of heaven. My entire family and friends knew we were supose to be there so they tried to reach us , but no answer, and no way to reach them because of the collapse, and all lines went to emergency calls. I lived, we lived and so many have not. i come from a country that is being atacked so often , i anticipated the reaction of the people . as we are in Israel, the New yorkers are warm and loving people, but they are not used to that kind of horor , not in their home. at first people were scared, than angry, than vengence start raising but all came with unity, the city was united...the most beautifull thing. Than it strucked me, we are the same people, the people that love, the ones that cherish freedom, embrase it, defend it. I think Neew York is the most beautifull city in the world, and was born again on september the 11th. it shall be stronger, and we will never stop loving it. i felt so bad that on september 11th of this year(2002), i didnt get to be at ground zero and around the city for the memories of all those people i saw,all those families walking down the streets with the pictures of their loved ones. after being there while it happened, and understanding the suffering, i feel part of New York forever. i love that place for ever, so many lived had been taken, but the city kept mine. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As a tenth grader, I was taking the state-mandated, standardized test (ISTEP), along with my fellow sophomores. Being that the tests began at 8:00 a.m. in Indiana (9:00 a.m. in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania), as the news was breaking throughout the world, the gymnasium, in which the tests were administered, knew nothing about it. As we finished our last test at approximately 11:00 (noon in the east), our Counselor of Attendence, James Wagner, got on the microphone, dismissing us, and ending with one line: "Today is a day that will change your life forever." For myself, along with much of my class, we saw that statement as an end to our ISTEP testing, and another milestone towards graduation (State laws requires that tenth pass the test, a Graduation Qualifying Exam, in order to graduate). But as most of us soon found out, the statement had another meaning. I proceeded on to lunch, sitting with some of cross country teammates. Two of my teammates--Ross Green and Nicholas Dailey--were talking about planes hitting the World Trade Centers, buildings collapsing, and other chaotic things. My first impression and question was, "What book are you guys reading?" When I asked them, I found out that it was no fictional story, or made-for-TV movie; rather, I was learning about the worst terrorist attack in American history. As time progressed, and more people had learned of the attacks, an eerie silence blanket R. Nelson Snider High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana--a silence not prone to a public school of 2,100 kids. At approximately noon, Indiana time (1 p.m. in the east), Dr. Thomas Fowler-Finn, then-Superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools, came over the district's email system, saying that no class in FWCS is to watch coverage of the attacks, with the exception of Social Studies and Government classes. I, unfortunately, was not able to watch the coverage--coverage I had yet to see. As the day continued, anxiety within me grew, as I waited, wanting to go home to be with my family, and see, first hand, on television, what had happened. Finally, after 2 90-minute classes, and a 2-hour cross country practice, I finally got home, to see the events of the day. I remember the first thing I saw were the collapses of both Towers and people running through the streets. Then I saw the tape of White House Chief of Staff, Andrew Card, telling President Bush about the second plane hitting the second Tower, while the President visited a Florida elementary school. The expression on President Bush's face, following his hearing of the news, will be etched in my memory forever. That single moment, at the time, the United States of America knew so little, but we knew that with a face like that on our leader, something was terribly, terribly wrong. I'll never forget 9/11, nor where I was. As September 11th's will continue to come and go, the day 9/11 will be known as a single day in our nation's history that we hope to never see again, while at the same we hope that we never forget. It was a scheduled C-section, I was to be there at seven in the morning, that would be eight in New York, my surgery was to begin at nine, but because of the events that were taking place, my doctor was late, and my surgery didn't take place untill 10:38 am. I was so worried because we live near AEDC Air Force Base, I didn't know if they might try to do something there also. But everything turned out ok in the long run, my little boy is a healthy 1 year old, he had a great birthday, I know it was a hard day for alot of people, but it made us a bigger stronger family. Our deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who lost a loved one or friend, or just someone you met along the way. But just think of the good things that come out of that day also. Tell us your story: On the day of September 11th, 2001 I was sitting in the gym of Fairfax High School talking to my friends and catching up on my homework. Suddenly my friend runs up to our class and says dramatically, "America's under attack". Of course, no one believed him and we all just went about our business. Then another teacher in the gym said, "No he's right, we are." We all rushed to our Athletic Director's office to watch the TV he kept there. The teachers had it turned onto CNN. We were, to say the least, shocked. We were scared for our lives and the lives of everyone elses. As I watched the one world trade center burn, I suddenly saw a plane flying uncomfortably close to the other tower and then crashed into it with a huge explosion. "This isn't happening" we all told ourselves. For the rest of the day that's all everyone could talk about. The day started out with an early morning. I wanted to vote in the city primary election before I went to work. I?m an actress and there was an audition that I wanted to go to that evening, so I wouldn't have time. My boyfriend, Paul was working as a poll watcher at my voting station. I remember he made a big deal out of telling me not to talk to him or hug him or anything because it would look bad in front of the officials. So, I got up, went and voted for city councilman etc., did not say anything to Paul, and got on the 8:15 Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan. I sat downstairs next to two girls in school uniforms. They talked to me for the whole ride about school and how hard fourth grade is. They wanted to know what it?s like to be an actor and if I had liked the fourth grade. They were so sweet and they were really one of the last normal things about the whole day. When the ferry docked I got off and headed for the 1/9 train to the World Trade Center. It was so beautiful out that morning. The sky was clear, it was just a little brisk and I thought about walking to work, but I knew it would take too long so I took the train. Sometimes the 1/9 train will come to the South Ferry station and sit for a few minutes. That?s what it did that morning. I got on the train at about 8:46 AM. A man was talking to his brother on his cell phone and said something about a plane hitting the Trade Center. When he hung up I turned to him and asked if I had heard him right. He said yes, his brother said that a plane had hit the tower. Everyone kind of shrugged. We figured it was a small plane that must have had an accident. The doors closed and we were off. The train stopped at the next station (Rector St.) and the conductor told us to please clear the train. He said there was an accident at the WTC and the train would be stopping here. We still didn't think much of it and everyone got off the train and headed out into the street. As I came up the stairs on to the street things seemed wrong. Everyone was standing around (which never happens on a weekday morning in the financial district) looking up at the Towers. We were only a couple of blocks away. There was black smoke pouring out of the building and what looked like glitter falling down from the sky. I started to walk to work. I just didn't think that it could be that serious and my building is next to the Trade Center. There used to be an indoor footbridge connecting the two. I got about a block away when A shadow passed overhead. As I looked up, the second plane hit the building. There was the loudest rumbling/crashing sound I ever heard and the ground shook. People started screaming and running the other way. I remember I was wearing these pants boots with a pretty sturdy heel and as I ran I hoped I wouldn't trip and break my leg. There was another loud rumbling and stuff started to fall out of the sky and hit the street. At that point it occurred to me that I could really die out here this morning. I don?t think there was anything very big, but you just didn't know what was going on. I crouched behind a construction dumpster under some scaffolding and covered my head with my hands for a minute. When it seemed like it was a little quieter, I got up and started down the street again. I got to rector St and turned the corner. I found myself on the patio/alcove of the 2 Rector St office building. There was a small woman helping a large man in overalls. He was bleeding all over. I just stood there for a moment, confused. The woman looked up and saw me. She told me to go inside and see if they had water or paper towels. Suddenly, I had a task. Water or paper towels! Yes, I would devote my life for the next few minutes to that. That made more sense than anything else that was going on. I got some water but they didn't have anything else. It was pandemonium inside as well. We started trying to clean the man up. He seemed pretty shocky. He said he was a maintenance worker at the WTC and he had been eating breakfast in the courtyard when the first plane hit. He dove under his truck and ran as soon as he thought it was relatively safe. He said he saw people falling from the sky and lots of blood. He wanted to go call his mom and I think he went off to find a policeman or a phone. I sat down on the ground and started to talk to the woman. Her name is Shira and she is one of my best friends today. She has saved my life in more than one way and I am forever grateful to her. We just talked about what was going on and shared some water and a cigarette. Neither of our phones worked. There were people all over the place trying to use their cell phones. Nobody?s cell phone would work. Shira told me it was her son?s birthday today and she wanted to get home. I couldn?t have agreed with her more. At that moment all I wanted was to see my mom and my family in Ca. I didn't want to die in NYC. After a little bit, we got up and started to walk down to the corner. We wanted to take a look and see what was going on. There was lots of smoke now and more silver glittery bits floating down from the flames. We turned around to head back to our spot when another rumbling started. People began to run again and you could see this solid looking, dirty cloud speeding towards us. We turned and ran, but we were engulfed before we could reach the building. We made to the railing and held on. You couldn't breathe and it just seemed to get thicker and thicker. I thought it would just keep coming until we all suffocated on the street. There was just no air. I lost Shira for a second but we found each other again and held hands. The stuff was in my nose and mouth and you couldn't see a thing. A woman next to us kept saying ?Cover your nose and you mouth.? So we did. After a little bit it began to thin out a little. We hadn't suffocated, but now what? A man must have come outside from the safety of his building. I could hear him telling everyone to join hands and make a chain, to follow the sound of his voice. I don?t know who he is, but he is a hero to me. He led us all into a building where they had water bottles and clean rags to put over our faces. Shira and I tried to spit out some of the stuff and actually laughed a little. It was one of many very surreal moments. They moved everyone to another part of the building and we waited and listened to the news on a small radio. That?s when we first heard that this was a terrorist attack, that the debris cloud that had just swept through the street was the first tower collapsing, that the Pentagon had been hit as well and that no one knew what the hell was going on. After about an hour a policeman came in and said that the Ferry to Staten Island was running. A lot of people were talking about walking north or walking over the South Street Sea port. I old Shira that I lived on Staten Island very near the ferry and that she could come home with me if she wanted. She decided to do that and we set off. When we got outside it was amazing. I had no idea where we were or which way was downtown. Everything was cover in the dust. I had walked up this stretch of Broadway everyday for a year and I was completely lost. Finally I noticed the Dress Barn store a block down and got my bearings and we started on one of the longest walks of my life. We passed Wall St. and the Bull statue and the Native American Museum. We actually found a working payphone and I called home. My brother answered and I told him to let everyone know I was all right and that I would try to call when I got home. We got to the ferry and waited for the boat. When it finally docked and they opened the door we saw that the boat was completely full with firefighters and EMT trucks. As they walked off the boat everyone began to cheer. It was amazing. These people were heading into the war zone and we were getting out. We rode the ferry back and watched as the city burned. It was like a bad movie. The smoke just kept pouring into the sky and the towers were gone. It made no sense. We got to my house and got cleaned up. Shira stayed the night. Her husband, Roy, was able to get across the bridge the next day and pick her up. They lived in Brooklyn. I will never forget that day. I try to remember things like meeting Shira, the man who came for us in the street and the firefighters faces as they headed uptown. It was one of our salespeople and she told us about the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. We turned on the radio as our television wasn't working. We were all glued to the radio all day long listening to the reports out of New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Girard is near Youngstown, which is very near where Flight 93 crashed. The plane actually flew over our area before turning around and crashing near Shanksville PA. Of course, we did not find that out until the next day. We were all heartsick that something like this could happen here in our country. I prayed for the families of the victims right then and there. I just wanted to rush home to my children and hug them. They were affected greatly by this at the time. One year later, we have put the events into perspective I think. We are much more aware of our surroundings and the people around us. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At the time, I was going through an intelligence course for a new MOS (job in the military) for the Marines. It just so happened that I needed to go to medical that morning; exactly what for, I don't remember, as the rest of the events of the day drowned it out with more troubling memories. As I was returning to the school, I passed by the lounge/snack area, where I saw a bunch of servicemen (Marines and Airmen) watching the overhead TV steadfastly. On the TV was coverage of the World Trade Center, with smoke billowing out of it from the first plane that hit. This was troubling, but I had to return to class. I figured I had something to talk about to the class. Little did I know that the situation would worsen. I returned to class and joined in with the lesson. In a little while, word came to us of a second plane hitting the WTC. Pretty soon, the Pentagon had been hit. Then the Force Protection (Threat) Condition of the base went to it's highest level, FPCon Delta. This meant noone was to be outside, noone was allowed to go home, and that security was to be so tight that you could barely move. Someone came into the classroom to officially inform us of what had taken place during the day. At lunchtime, we normally were set free to obtain lunch. This day, however, they obtained buses to take all of us to the chow hall. If you didn't have money for it, arrangements were made through other students to get you a few dollars for chow. Everyone was herded in a straight line from a hallway out to the buses, once it was determined that everyone had their ID card. Every building had someone checking IDs. It was a hectic day. However, we didn't let the terrorists affect our training. No matter what they were trying to affect, we wouldn't let them affect our training schedule. Though it was a challenge, and hard for some of us who knew people hurt in the attack, we finished out the day of training right on schedule. Though they destroy our buildings and people, they will not destroy America and our will to live.
