I got to work within 5mins and my husband was in the office with the television on. I was in a daze. Like I couldn't really absorb what was happening. My mother called me and my sister called me. My mother was terrified and wanted me to go and get my duaghter from school. My sister and I called each other back and forth each time we heard something new had happened. It was just totally unbelievable. I have had nightmares about being in a house with my children and terrorist coming in and attacking us. In my dreams I was determined to protect my children. I would love to go and view Ground Zero and get the full effect of the horrable events. God Bless America and to those families (so many) who lost loved ones. Tell us your story: When i got the news that the first Trade Center was hit i was on the phone with a friend and my Aunt beeped in on the 2 way calling. I answered the beep and she said turn the T.V. on NBC. I told my mother what she said and she turned the T.V. on. the sight that i saw i was mortified. I was thinkin to myself " I hope that this isnt an attack on our nation". Then i seen the second tower hit. At that point I started cryin and i was terrified. How could this happen to one of the strongest nations in the world? Thats the one question that still hasn't been answered for me. When I heard about the other two attacks I was with my mother and best friend goin grocery shoppin. We weren't sure if we should go but we had to. When we got there it was all over the radio and that was all we heard on the way there. When we got home we put the T.V. on Nbc again and we watched that for the rest of that week. The attack hit close to me because I know this probably sounds selfish but my birthday is 8 days afetr it happened so you can imagine how that was for me. But what the peoples family went through has no comparison on my life cuz what they went through is so terrible. It should never have happend and it SUCKS!!!!! I had just finished performing 7 days in a row of parties and just the night before I played an event "Blind Wine Tasting and Touring" here in Bethpage. I was very wiredand didn't sleep well the night of the10th.I felt a strange feeling in the air. It happens to me a lot. Anyway, I was tossing and turning and my husband's alarm went off and we heard the news of a plane hitting the Trade Center. We bolted out of bed and sat in front of the TV set and watched the whole thing happen. We were numb. Was this real, Was it a TV movie? My husband is a Port Jefferson Fire Department Volunteer Fireman. He quickley called the fire house. A truck was leaving to go in and help. From that day forward I have had trouble sleeping through the night without seeing the two towers burning, or the plane hitting. I can't even imagine what it was like to actually be there. I remember that day as if it was last week. I was getting ready to go to school when my dad yelled for me to come into the living room. The first tower had been hit by a plane. I didn't really think anything of it until I stood there and watched the second plane it. Nobody was expecting it. I was in a hurry because I was late for school, so we listened to the news the whole time to school. As I got into my classroom the tv was already on. Nobody knew what was going on, that's when the Pentagon got hit. Everyone just stared silently as we watched our nation under attack. This was the United States of America!! Then news came in of the Pensilvania plane crashing. Everyone was in complete shock. We sat there and watched the tv screen as people started jumping out of the highest stories of the twin towers. How bad had it must have been to feel so completely lost that you would jump out of a 100 story building. I remember thinking that the world was ending. Then just as I thought that the worst was over, the first tower collapsed. People were screaming, what would it have been like to be there, in New York, watching as your city fell to pieces. I went straight home after school and watched the news all night long. The numbers were coming in that as many as 15,000 people had lost their lives. Now that it has been a year I still am in shock, how could this have happened to our country? America the beautiful, the land of the free. As I watched the footage once again of what happened one year ago, I still get chills up my spine. I think, I am so lucky to be here in Utah, away from the terror, death and destruction of that day. What about the people who were there? The people who lived through it all, the family members who lost so many loved ones, not only the heros-but all the ordinary good hearted people like you and me who died. I pray for them every night, and I will for the rest of my life. Losing a loved one is hard enough, but to lose someone for no reason--to see them one minute then the next watching on tv as they die. America is strong, but the people of New York are stronger. They keep their heads held up high, knowing that their father, mother, brother, sister, co-worker, child, etc. died serving America. It is hard to think that more than 3000 good people lost their lives that day. They will always be remembered. Maybe not thier faces, or their names, but their spirits. I found a website that listed every name of everyperson who was murdered on that day. I printed it out to keep as a rememberence-not just for me, but for my child and their children. They may not understand what it was like, they may not be able to concieve 3000 people, I think showing them the list of people will make them understand more clearly. It will show them that the people who died were real people, true Americans. A day like this will never be forgotten, it must not be forgotten. We need to keep it in our minds and in our hearts. We need to remember that everyone has a soul. Be nicer to our fellow Americans, smile more, love more. We owe it to those that so tradjectly lost their lives. I love America. As September 11, 2002 came and I saw all of the memorials and listened to everyones stories, I could not keep myself from tearing up. No I did not know anyone who died, but I am an American just like everyone else. In Sandy there was a memorial-- 3012 American Flags and a flag for every other country that lost a person. As I walked through this "cemetary" I couldn't help but think that every one of these flags was a person, the enormity of it was too much. 3000 people, how could someone do that? On one of the music stations they had a child who had lost their dad talking, she said, if only those terrorists could have sat down and talked to my dad, they would see what a good person he was and they would have never done this to him. My heart wept for that child and every other child that has to grow up parentless. May thy have strength and comfort in this time of need. America loves you, and everyone who lost a loved one. May we remember who we are, AMERICANS, let freedom ring and peace prevail, Good will always conquer Evil. America is the good and we will win this war! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, 2001 was my first day of interning on Capitol Hill for Senator Peter Fitzgerald. I rode down to Capitol Hill from my school, American University, in the AUTO van with several of my friends who were all headed to internships downtown as well. Once there, I had a few minutes to burn, so I headed down to the coffee shop in the basement of the Dirkson building to get some breakfast. As I got into line for a bagel I passed a television and at first I didn?t even notice what was on the screen. After a few minutes, I realized that it was a live picture of the World Trade Center in New York City and it was on fire. The news correspondent was saying that a few minutes ago, a plane had flown directly into one of the towers. Nobody knew if it had been an accident or a deliberate action. I watched for a few more minutes, thinking that it must have been an accident and how sorry I was for all the people involved. A plane landing at one of the New York airports must have flown off course and hit the building. I moved ahead in line to get my bagel and promptly forgot about the plane crash. I was starting to feel nervous about starting my internship. Several minutes later I found myself sitting in the newly painted reception area of Senator Fitzgerald?s office, waiting for the intern coordinator. I watched television while I waited for her to come out. The picture on the screen was still of the WTC, but this time, both of the towers were burning. Staffers began to gather around the television and raised the possibility that this might be a deliberate attack on the United States and that being in a federal building might not be very safe. Some said that it might be wise to evacuate the building, just in case something else happened. Most of the staff immediately dismissed the possibility that anything would happen in Washington and everyone returned to their work. Fifteen minutes later, the intern coordinator came out and took me on a quick tour of the office. We ended up in the mailroom and she had just settled me down with a pile of letters to open when one of the staff members sitting near me screamed and pointed towards the television sitting on top of a file cabinet. The Pentagon had been hit. Nobody knew what we should do, if anything. The office manager called the Capitol Police and informed them that the Pentagon was on fire (as if they didn?t know). The idea of evacuating the building was raised once again by some of the staff, but most people decided against it. Just then, CNN starting reporting that both the White House and State Department had been hit as well. Those rumors later turned out to be untrue, but at that moment my concern was not for myself, but for my friends who were interning at both those places this morning. ?Please,? I thought. ?Let them be okay.? I returned to my letters, but I never got any farther than slitting the first envelope. Just then, a Capitol Police officer ran through the door behind my desk yelling, ?Everyone get out NOW! The city is under attack! Move!? At that point, things started to happen fast. Doors began to slam and then lock all around me and I heard someone yelling to Andrew (the mail guy) to make sure that I got out safely. I barely had time to grab my bag before Andrew dragged me out the door with him and into the crowded hallway. Once I was outside the scene didn?t get any better. All of Capitol Hill seemed to be streaming out of the buildings and the crowds were so thick I could barely walk. Cars were trying to exit the parking lot but the streets were so full of people that they couldn?t move. Black smoke was rising from the direction of the Pentagon and the crowd seemed to be growing more hysterical by the minute. I, like everyone else, pulled out my cell phone, but there was no signal. ?Figures,? I thought to myself. ?I bought this for an emergency and now that there is one it doesn?t even work.? I began to walk towards Union Station to catch the Metro home. When I got there I decided that it might be a good idea to call my mother and let her know I was okay. I headed straight for the pay phones and after several unsuccessful attempts, managed to get through to her voice mail and left a message telling her that I was safe and headed back to campus. I?d no sooner hung up the phone than Union Station was evacuated. A policeman saw me and immediately ordered me to leave. As I was exiting the building, I saw a line forming for taxies. I figured that other than walking, this might be the only way I was getting home, so I headed over to join the line. Just as I reached the end, I heard someone call my name. It was Jen, one of the receptionists in Fitzgerald?s office who I?d met earlier that morning. She was standing with her boyfriend, Chad, who also worked on Capitol Hill. As it turned out, we were all heading in the same direction, so we decided to split a cab. While we stood in line, we watched the smoke and flames shoot up from the direction of the Pentagon, clearly visible against the blue sky. I couldn?t help thinking how surreal the entire scene was; it was such a beautiful morning and the smoke and flames seemed completely out of place. Just as Jen, Chad, and I reached the head of the line, the police ordered the entire area around the Capitol evacuated, including the outside of Union Station. All the taxies drove away and hundreds of people were left standing there. As the three of us stood there wondering how we were going to get home, a policeman started directing everyone away from the train station and towards the downtown area. There was no choice but to follow the crowd, even though we really weren?t sure where we were going to end up. We walked for the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon. At one point we stopped at a store that had a television in the window. There we watched the second of the two World Trade Center towers fall to the ground in a pile of smoke and dust. For the first time that morning, the full impact of what had happened hit me. Everyone in the crowd started to cry, but there was no time to dwell on what had happened. The sidewalks were jammed with pedestrians and the streets were in gridlock; everyone was trying to get out of the city but there wasn?t anywhere to move. As we made our way into the northwest part of the city we passed the embassies, most of which were heavily guarded now. Police cars and fire engines from surrounding areas were attempting to wind their way downtown to the Pentagon and overhead we could see helicopters flying in from all directions. When we reached Adams Morgan we stood still for a moment and looked down towards the cloud of smoke rising from below, taking the entire situation in. Eventually, the three of us found a restaurant that was open and serving food, so we decided to stop and have lunch as long as we had the chance. After eating we checked out the status of the Metro and the red line was indeed up and running, at least to where I needed to go. Although I had no desire to go underground at the moment, I decided to risk it and took the most nerve-wracking Metro ride of my life back to campus, arriving back a full 6 hours after being evacuated from Capitol Hill that morning. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001, was a regular school day for me. I got up at 7AM like I usually did and got ready for school. I had been sick and stayed home the day before and I wasn't really feeling much better so my parents let me stay home from school. Since I was up I decided to go eat breakfast and come back upstairs to my room and listen to the radio like I had done the last 9 years that I had been living in Leesburg. As time passed I kept looking out the window and thinking how nice of a day it was, yet for some reason I just felt odd about the day. It might have been because I was sick, but something just felt off. Around 9AM, when the radio program that I listen to would have normally been going off the air, there was a break in the commercial and it returned to the program. They were saying that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade towers. At first, like many people I would imagine, I thought that it was a small plane and it wasn't going to be a big thing. About that time my mom, who was downstairs watching TV, called me down and told me what had happened. I told her that I knew about it already. At that same moment I was watching the TV and I saw the second plane crash into the other tower live. The first thing that I noticed was it was a commercial jet-liner and that casualties would have been horrific. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV. After the initial shock had worn off from the first two planes was about the time that the news had reported an explosion at the Pentagon. Immediately I knew that it couldn't just be coincidence. I was afraid to be where I was in relation to Washington, DC. I kept looking out the window for planes flying overhead since the FAA had grounded all other commercial flights. I could only imagine what the situation was like at school. Later, after the towers collapsed I knew that everyone inside those buildings was dead. For some reason I wasn't as upset as I should have been by what had happened, I just felt desensitized from seeing and hearing about the seemingly daily terrorist activities in Israel and Palestine and in the Phillipines. I know I didn't mention anything about the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, but thats only because I don't know enough about what happened except that the passengers on board were pretty courageous and attempted to subdue the hijackers. Now, a few days from the second anniversary of 9-11, I feel the same as I did when it happened, just more aware of things going on in the world besides the sometimes trivial and meaningless activities that go on in America. Tell us your story: While reading a newspaper in the afternoon (there is a six hour time difference between NY and Italy), I was literally grabbed by the arm and told to come inside the small cafe that I was sitting outside of. I looked up at the screen of the tiny, outdated television that never seemed to be used and saw CNN. I had just moved from Connecticut to Florence after spending a semester there in the winter and spring for the University of Connecticut's 2001 Study Abroad Program. After spending a summer back in the U.S. I had decided that I had left my heart in Italy, along with the man I had fallen in love with. As I looked up at the television I saw what seemed to be a small plane slam into the World Trade Center. My boyfriend said (in Italian), "Oh my god, someone has attacked Chicago," and as I looked up him with tears in my eyes, I simply stated "That's New York." My heart sank and I grabbed my cell phone, immediately before even watching the second airplane hit. One of my friends had just gotten an internship at the WTC, and another was visiting friends in New York that day. The first number I dialed was my house, as I had assumed my father had not yet left for work as a CT State Trooper- and the phone rang once and an operator got on the phone and told me that the number was "out of service." I began to panic. Everyone that I loved, my entire family, my friends, everyone I had ever known or cared about lived on the East Coast. As I made the second call to my mother's office, the phone didn't even ring once- the operator once again repeated that the number was out of service. I stood, frozen, holding my phone with the message repeating over and over, and watched CNN dubbed in Italian. As news of the Pentagon and other airplanes trickled over to Italy, I just stood there. More and more Americans found their way into the cafe- some sitting on the floor, some hugging, some crying as the news seemed to get worse and worse. I was right about to go try and email my family as the first of the two towers came down. That's when I ran to a small internet cafe and checked my email. There were 15 new messages. Everyone was ok. But I wasn't. In a daze, my boyfriend and I wandered over to the restaurant that he worked at and attempted to eat lunch. But the sick feeling in my stomach wouldn't allow me to eat. I looked over at a group of Americans eating lunch. They were middle aged and I realized that they probably didn't even know what was going on back home. There were two couples and one of the women came over and asked me to take a picture of them. As her husband handed me her camera, I thought seriously about whether or not I wanted to tell them about what happened. I took the photo and said, "do you guys know about the WTC and what's going on in the States?" They all had blank looks on their faces, so I began to explain and all of their faces turned white. One of the couples grabbed eachother's hands and in a shaky voice, the husband stated, "my son works in the Pentagon." I just looked at him and whispered "sorry," as I walked back to my table. Never in my life had I felt so alone. I just wanted to see my family and the uncertainty of the what was next was painful for me. That night, La Nazione, the local newspaper had a special newspaper produced, with the headline reading "Guerra al America"- War on America. The next night there was a candlelight vigil in Piazza Rupublica- and as I hummed and sang and gazed at all of the people in Florence dedicating a few moments of time, I was overwhelmed by what was happening. I looked up at the small statue of The David, he seemed to be questioning the flag that slowly waved above his head that had been put at half mast. That night, I decided that my place was in America. I loved Italy- but I felt guilty for not being there for my country in a time of comradery and love of all countrymen. I ached to sing songs and hug others who felt the same way I did. I flew home as soon as I could get a flight out- 2 weeks after the 11th. And the first sight I saw as I flew lower and lower toward Logan Airport in Boston, was a huge billboard with an American flag hanging from it that said, "God Bless America." Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On Tuesday morning 11 September 2001, I was working the breakfast shift at a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. I had woken up at 4:30 a.m. to take the 7 train from Flushing into the city. By time 9 am rolled around, I was swamped with customers who were demanding for more coffee and more food. Some time during service, the hostess told me in passing that her friend had just called up to tell her that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Thinking it was an accident, I gave a quick thought to sympathy and dove back into my job. A little while later, the hostess told me that a second plan had crashed into WTC 2 and that it looked like terrorism. "That's great," I thought helplessly. Then suddenly, table by table, people were receiving and making cel phone calls like crazy. It didn't surprise me as the restaurant's clientele were often writers or executives of major companies in the publishing industry. I overheard conversations at tables and heard words like "attack" and "terrorism". It was the most disturbing situation I had ever been in: having to keep on doing my job while people were dying and thinking that my could life could be in danger as well. My manager and the restaurant owner ran outside down to Fifth Avenue to look downtown. They returned and said they saw a lot of smoke. I stopped everything I was doing and called my mom to tell her not to come into the city that day. She had planned to commute in some time in the afternoon. She asked me if there was a fire in the city because she saw smoke billowing over towards Queens. I told her it was more serious than that and they were terrorist attacks and that I would try to find a way home as soon as possible. I then called my boyfriend in Seattle. He hadn't woken up yet; it was 6 in the morning there. I told him what had happend and that I loved him and gave him all my mom's contact information. I told him to call my mom and make sure she was alright if anything happened to me. I finished my shift and my manager told me that a lot of servers scheduled for lunch couldn't make it in because of transportation problems (because of the ensuing chaos of the attacks) and cordially invited me to stay and work if I wanted to. Needless to say, I changed out of my work clothes and started mentally mapping out possible destinations. As I was about to leave, the owner brought up a stereo from the office and turned it to a news station that was broadcasting reports. I remember him laughing as they reported that the Pentagon had also been attacked. It seemed as if he thought he was listening to entertainment fiction. He turned around and pointed at me and asked something to the effect of, "You're working lunch, right?" Yeah, right. I left and tuned my walkman to a news station. I remember one broadcaster clearly saying, "It seems we are at war now. With whom-- we do not know." As I emerged from the restaurant, I saw that the streets were flooded with people just wandering uptown. I walked up 55th Street and couldn't shake this surreal feeling as I was listening to my walkman that this was some hoax in the vein of Wells's War of the Worlds. I assumed trains weren't running, so I took the next best step and went to my college where I found some friends. On my way, I heard a man tell his friend, "Hey, this isn't the time for that. This is the time when we have to come together." At St. Luke's Hospital, ambulances had closed off 59th Street and a doctor had taken charge of the situation with a blowhorn. He announced that there were car bombs going off all over the city (a false report that was being broadcasted everywhere) and that people needed to leave the vicinity. I walked with some friends to donate blood and then we went to a friend's apartment in the upper west side. Since the tv antennas had collapsed with the towers, we couldn't watch tv and nobody wanted to listen to the radio. So I made calls to friends in other cities to let them know I was ok and was able to reach a friend who went to George Washington University in DC. We were both glad to hear each other. My friends and I sat around and talked and we ate dinner. A convoy was sent to the local liquor store. They returned with the proper items and reported a long, snaking line there-- apparently we weren't the only ones looking to drown our fears. Around 7 pm, I decided to venture out with a friend and found that the trains were working and got home to find my mom glued to the television. Tell us your story: I have 5 children and never thought that another day in my life would stand out as much as the day that each of my children came into my life - until 9/11/01. That day I had my entire family in my van, my husband and 4 of my children. I was 3 months pregnant and getting IV treatments for dehydration due to the pregnancy and disbility from work. I was driving my husband to work and dropping the kids off to day care and the schools that the older children attended. It was just an oridinary day until as I was driving on one of the busier streets heading downtown in Ft Wayne and our entire wheel flew off of our vehicle at 8:14am. The tire, rim and all. Luckily I was in the far left lane on a one way street and I was able to slow down and pull off on to a side street. No one was hurt - at least no one in my situation. I didn't realize until after my mother came to get us and dropped everyone off that there was something going on. Until I arrived home and turned on the television did I realize the nightmare that was happening in my country. Because I was on disability I was home all day to watch the news coverage and I sat horrified for hours, days... and I can't even imagine being there in person. Actually being there and seeing all of this first hand. I struggled to find the best way to explain this tragedy to my children and thought about what if I was one of those mothers that lost a family member and had to explain that. Those words begin an essay I wrote about November 12, 1985, the day my school bus got in an accident, and two police officers were shot and killed in Springfield. That?s sort of how I feel today. God, God, God. Sometimes I feel as if my mind will explode or my heart will be crushed. This morning, sitting at my desk, I hear Elzbieta call out from her computer, "Plane crash in New York City!" "What?!" I shriek, jumping out of my chair. My heart starts racing. Oh no. Not again. For a few minutes, I feel as if it?s September 11 all over again. The adrenaline, the jittery feeling, the lightheadedness. Once again I?m trying to check Internet sites that won?t load; once again we?re watching the Today Show in Conference Room 504. Once again, we?re watching smoke fill the New York City sky. As of tonight, they don?t think it?s a terrorist attack. But 255 people are dead, plus 6 on the ground where the plane landed. In Queens, where so many World Trade Center victims lived. This poor city. How much more are they going to have to take? Never mind the anthrax cases. Then tonight. Dad calls to tell me Lucy from church died of some kind of overdose. My heart just aches. One of her sons found her. Those two boys. If only I could do something. And Judy. Imagine losing your only daughter. It?s just so sad. People say it all the time, but when these things are so sudden, you think, "I just saw her?" I did just see her yesterday. She went out of her way to call out to me as we were leaving. "Have a good week!" She waved. "You too!" And I blew her a kiss. Something I NEVER do. God, God, God. My head hurts. Help them God. Help all of these hurting people. ? Wednesday, November 23, 2001 Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and tonight I was rolling out dough for a pumpkin pie. Right in the middle of things, I realized my pie plate was missing. So I had to stop and drive to Big Y. The last time I had to do that was September 10. The evening comes back to me so clearly. I remember how infuriated I was that they had forgotten to give me my magazines. I marched back there in such a huff. I kept reminding myself of that, driving in the car. Dear God, I hope and pray we retain the lessons of September 11. What else will it take for us to enjoy every moment, to live outside of ourselves? Let me not care more about a magazine than people or silly petty needs like having to have my favorite snack. Let me cherish Thanksgiving and its meaning always more than I did before 9/11. Let me not forget all of the "empty chairs around tables tomorrow," as Tom Brokaw put it on the news tonight. As always, I feel this desperate sadness that I can?t help all the hurting people. But here, closer to home, there is Judy and Becca and Grace and the boys, grieving, and I can help them. God, look down on America tomorrow and show mercy. Hear our repentant hearts. Don?t forget us. Look out for us. Especially those lonely ones. ? Sunday, November 25, 2001 On the outside, everything seems fine. And maybe it is for some people. But I?m struggling. I don?t know what?s quite wrong. But I don?t like it. First, the news. I have to turn it on first thing in the morning. I have to know ? did we catch Bin Laden yet? What?s going on? Did anything else bad happen? I end up watching for a half hour, flipping through channels. Then there?s the World Trade Center. It haunts me more than ever. There are calendars, postcards, framed pictures of it for sale everywhere. I watch old movies, scanning for it. I read blurbs about it in old travel books. Sometimes I just stare at the pictures. I scan the news for the latest on Ground Zero. Have the numbers of dead/missing changed? How much debris has been removed? What will they rebuild there? I think about the people all of the time. Today on MSNBC Dan and I saw this report. They were six stories underneath, in the subway. You could see a sign that said "World Trade Center." You could also see a pile of debris. This man said 5 stories, each of which was spaced 14 feet apart, had been compressed into 3 feet when it collapsed. Three feet. I keep thinking about that. God, the people. At night, I dream very similar dreams. The buildings are crashing, or I?m at the rubble, or we?re talking about what to rebuild. I wake up and think, "they?re really not there anymore." And I didn?t even live in New York or even visit them. Ever. They weren?t part of my life. What?s wrong with me? I guess I still feel like: move on? How can I completely? How do we go on? We can?t act as if nothing ever happened. But we can?t live in fear. We can?t stay grief-stricken, and we can?t be obsessed, like I am. So what exactly do we do? I hope I?m not the only one who feels this way. I know it won?t always be like this. These are just?extraordinary times. I just want to do more than survive through them. On the morning of 9-11, I received a phone call from my best friend. She was at work and asked me to turn on the TV and let her know what was going on. The second plane had already crashed in to the World Trade Center by the time I turned on my television. Absolute horror filled my heart and mind. My daughter called a couple of hours later to ask if she needed to come home from her honeymoon. My first statement to her was to stay where she was because she was further away from the Oconee Power Plant that I was. I expected the plant to be hit next. I was off from work that day and I was ironing and listening to the radia, Litght 103.9 fm when they interrupted the program saying that a plane just crashed into the World Trade center building. I grabbed my remote and turned on the t.v. You see I am a native New yorker and this was my home. I'd only just moved to North Carolina 3 years ago. When I saw the World trade building on fire and the instant replay of the plane crashing in it, i thought, oh my God. The people in the plane, the people in the building. I started to cry. My children were in school. I tried to to N.Y. to my sisters and brothers house, still watching the news. I thought, what a terrible accident, then right before my eyes I saw the second plane run right into the other building. Thats when all h---,broke loose. I got down on my knees and started praying to Our father which art in heaven. You see, I am a true Clidg if God, so the first one I'm going to call is my father. He worked at 99 Church across the WTC, he was there just after the first attack and watched as desperate people leaped to their death. (He never talks about it now and I can only imagine what a horrible vision that was). I woke up and was stunned, I had just been laid off from my dot com job (which seems like a totaly differnt era in history) and had been cashing my unemplyment check at 7 WTC - the smaller bulding that fell after the towers. I couldnt believe it, I was stunned I truly believed we were under attack and truly saw the world for what it was- a dangerous place. But luckily, no one I knew was in the WTC.....Or so I thought. A buddy was on the 96th floor of the South Tower and didnt make it. I found out the next day. Terrance Aiken had three kids and a wife who loved him...THis guy was a hillarious guy always ready to party and tell some funny story about being a black dude living in Staten Island in NYC. We had been talking about a trip to Ibiza that last time we saw each other 2 weeks before the attacks... But now due to ignorance and hate he will never walk this earth again. Life is precious, there have been trillions who have been here before and will be here after us, but human life is still precious. We are all going to die someday, whats the point of killing? NEXT THING YOU KNOW EVERYONE WAS EVACUATED. I STAYED A LITTLE WHILE WATCHING THE EVENTS ON T.V. AFTER THE FIRST BUILDING WENT DOWN I DECIDED TO GET OUT THE BUILDING. BUT, LIKE ALOT OF PEOPLE, I DIDN'T GO HOME. I WENT STAIGHT DOWNTOWN. I VOLUNTEERED MY SERVICES BECAUSE I KNEW THAT I WOULD BE NEEDED TO HELP RESCUE PEOPLE. MORE IMPORTANT I NEEDED TO HELP. WITHIN MINUTES I WAS CHOSEN TO HELP SETUP A MAKESHIFT HOSPITAL AT STYVECENT HIGH SCHOOL TO AWAIT THE INJURED. BUT NO ONE CAME. THERE WERE NO INJURED ANYMORE. FOR HOURS ALL WE DID WAS WASH OUT THE EYES OF THE EMECENCY WORKERS WITH SALINE SOLUTION. A NURSE RECRUITED US TO GO INTO GROUND ZERO TO CLEAN OUT THE FIREMEN,POLICE AND RECOVERY WORKERS EYES. I NEVER IN MY LIFE EVEN IMAGINE THAT I WOULD WITNESS SUCH DEVASTATION. AFTER A WHILE I FINALLY TOOK A GOOD LOOK AT MY SURROUNDINGS. I BROKE DOWN AND CRIED. TO THIS VERY DAY I STILL CRY. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As a park ranger, I get to talk about history all the time. But it's not usually like this. I was preparing to go to a meeting in the city that day. The first remembrance I have of anything relating to the event was sitting around the break room table, when a maintenance worker I didn't know, talking on the telephone, said, "A plane just hit the World Trade Center!" Of course, it seemed so ridiculous. I headed up the stairs to find the folks in the office scrambling to put on a television. Apparently, others had heard the story too. For the next few minutes, we were all pretty much glued to the television, watching the events in New York City. When it was determined that it was not just an accident, there was concern for visitors and staff out in the park. I was at our headquarters building, just down the hill from the Washington Monument. A friend and co-worker was down near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. We in the office, were trying to pass on the information to our coworkers in the field, and I was on the phone talking with my friend down by the Wall, telling him what was going on in NYC. "You're not going to believe this! Two planes have hit the towers, and they have fallen down!" I was explaining what had happened, when he interrupted. "Oh my God. Something just hit the bridge!" And he hung up. We were all familiar with Reagan Airport being just across the river from our park and had frequently been asked questions about the plane that had crashed into the 14th Street bridge about 20 years ago. My friend, hearing a loud noise, disappeared to go investigate. Soon enough, I would see what he had heard on the news. I could walk outside the building and look across the river and see the smoke coming from the Pentagon. Management had us stay on site until about 2:30 that afternoon. By the time we left, there were few cars on the roads. My apartment in Arlington was just minutes from the Pentagon, so as I drove home, I passed the smoking building. In the next few days, one of the creepier things to affect us on the Mall was the quiet. On a normal day, the planes from the airport fly right over us, and often, while trying to give directions or explain the significance of a memorial, we have to stop and pause for the plane to pass over. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Semptember 11 September 11th was a national tragedy. It happened when I was in school. Some people had actually heard the news. They talked about the Twin Towers falling. When I got home that day and turned on the television, all that I could see were the two buildings gettting hit by the planes. That day was very scary because my uncle workedacross the street from the World Trade Center. Luckily, he was able to get away before the two towers fell down. The next day, he sent me an e-mail aboutwhat had happened to the World Trade Center. He said that it looked like a snowstorm. When hegot home on September 11th, he needed to take a shower for at least an hour to wash all of he ash and debris off. I thought that the ash covered streetswere kind of funny looking, but hte fact that all of that was from two buildingswas scary. The acts of September 11th were scary for anybody living in the United States of America. It taught us that lives can be taken in a split second and to cherish life because it only lasts for a short time. I learned that you need to enjoy life while it lasts. The fact that nobody thought of this before, is just as big a tragedy a the planes hitting the two towers. Many things shouldbe remembered because of September 11th. We need to rememberto be kind to everyone. People also should remember to treat people the way you want to be treated. You also need to remember that life can't be taken for granted and people should live their lives however thay want to. Those and many other thingsneed to be remembered about that day so everyonecan enjoy life. I HAVE YET TO HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED, TILL WHEN I GOT TO THE SCHOOL. AS SOON AS I WALKED IN, I SAW PEOPLE AROUND THE ONE TV JUST STARING AT IT, LIKE IN SHOCK, DISBELIEF.
