Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It had to have been the most beautiful of days that morning. Not a cloud in the sky and warm for September. I had just gotten to my desk when I hear a rumble, similar to thunder, the light flickered on and off and then silence. I turned and looked out the window and saw burning debris falling from the sky.I grabbed my bag and headed for the stairs. On the way down, along with many others, we talked, laughed, unaware of what was happening, all the while thinking we would be outside for a bit then we would go back up once whatever happened was cleared up.When I came out of the doors onto the plaza level and looked out, I knew I would not be going back up anytime soon. Large chunks of burning debris littered the plaza. I ran to the other side to look out onto Liberty Street, to see the cars in the small lot across the street, blackend and burning with debris all around them.I called my husband to tell him that I thought a bomb had gone off in tower 1 and that I was fine and on my way out of the building.That was the last time I spoke to him until 2pm that afternoon. We were ushered out into the mall and instructed to go out one of the exits onto the street and continue as quick as we could away from the building. Once out onto the street, (Liberty) I was standing in the middle of the road, trying to get a line out on my cell to call my mother when I heard a sound, similar to a rocket;a whistling sound that started off high pitched then became lower, followed by an enormous explosion. I was maybe 40-50 feet away from my building, Tower 2. Everyone around me started to run. I made it across the street and managed to squeeze myself into a small cranny in between the fire house and the store next to it, which had construction awning built above it. Thank god for that because it kept me from being hit with chunks of the building as well as pieces of the airplane (within eye sight was a burning seat buckle).I went into the Liberty Street Cafe where the workers were trying to find a key to open the back door to let us out through as there was no way we were going to go back onto Liberty as there was debris falling periodically.Once out, we were instructed to go into the school on Greenwich. There were were put into the auditorium and told we would be safe in there and would not be allowed to leave until the police said it was safe.After about an hour, let led us down two flights of stairs, back up another and out the back way and were told to get as far away as possible. Head towards the water, we were told.Me, being from New Jersey, and having had spent 5 1/2 years working in that building, had no idea where to go!My path train took me right inside, and I spent almost every lunch hour, working or eating in the building. Sure I'd been in the surrounding area but that was it!With the path down, I had no idea how to get home.So, like hundreds of others, I stood on Greenwich Street, 2 blocks away, just staring with disbelief, watching the smoke, watching the people jumping. That was when the building started to go.I turned to a woman next to me and yelled, "Run." Fortunately, there was an office building not far from where we stood and we ran inside. We ran to the other side of the building and threw ourselves on the floor.We felt the building shake and heard the loud rumbling.We turned to look through the glass doors onto the street and watched the day turn into night.We watched people, piling up at the doors, being trampled.Men stepping on women, banging on the doors to be let in but they wouldn't unlock them.I couldn't do anything but cry.People who worked for the building yelled for us to go to the basement, as we would be safe there so we did. There were 15 or so of us down there. They gave us water and wash clothes to clean up with and told us to wait for a few minutes and we could go up one at a time to use their office phones to call our family to tell them we were alright. Once upstairs, that was when I learned that it was a terrorist attack from a radio someone had playing on their desk.I tried my husband but couldn't get through so I called my mom.As soon as she said my name, I cried;really cried.I was alive but what about everyone else?I gave my mom instructions to call the rest of my family and I went back down to the basement as I was afraid to leave.Good decision.Within minutes, the second tower fell.Once again, the building rumbled and dust began to fall from the ceiling but it stood strong.It wasn't until weeks later that I realized how lucky we were that the buildings collapsed into themselves instead of falling over. Not that it takes away from the pain of the thousands lost but thousands more would have perished.Approximately an hour after the last of my beautiful buildings fell, I started to feel the need to get out.I just picked myself up, wet a wash cloth, and headed out onto the street.It was deserted except for a petite, oriental woman with a insulation mask over her nose and mouth.I remember thinking to myself, "How odd? Why is she scooping up the powered concrete and half burned papers and putting them in her bag?" Now I know.I headed away towards the Staten Island Ferry, not looking back.I boarded a ferry, clutched a life vest to my chest and cried.My husband managed to get a call in to me at this point and he was crying so hard I didn't know who it was.I checked my messages on my cell phone.I start to cry even today just thinking about them.The panic and pain in the voices of my family is too much to bear.I wandered around Staten Island for around 2 hours.Every mac machine was out of order, my cell phone battery had died and every payphone had a line a mile long.A police officer gave me $10 when I asked him how to get home to New Jersey with no money.I bought a pack a cigarette's, ( I had quit years ago)took the change and called my best friend (also a coworker) who lived in Staten Island to see if she made it home and if she could come get me.Her stepson came to get me while they called my husband to let him know where I was.He couldn't get to me as they had closed all the bridges and tunnels so he had to cross over the bridge on foot where I met him on the other side.I cried when my husband held me.The only thing I wanted to do was go home and sleep.Needless to say, a good nights sleep alluded me many, many months. Two weeks later, we were relocated to Water Street;1 year and 3 months to the day later, I was laid off.Strange how things changed so much after 9/11.All those people, with whom I shared, maybe a passing glance or a small smile with, on my way in to work for 5 1/2 years, are gone. I didn't know them. They didn't know me. We just shared the same space for all that time.We were family in a way. Those two beautiful towers our bond and I will miss each and every nameless face that smiled back at me or glanced my way, every day for as long as I live. Tell us your story: Well I was in History Class and we had a sub so I thought I would be slick and turn on the T.V to watch some news but when I turned it on I saw something I would not exspect, It was a plane that hit the one of the twin towers, then about 5 minutes later I still was watching it and then another plane hit the world trade center. After all that I wanted to know if anyone I know was in the Twin Towers because I didn't want to hear about it if they were because that would be to much for me that day. So all I did was go home and watch the news and went to bed about 5 hours earily just to see if would all go away tomorrow but it didn't. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11, 2001 as if it were any normal workday. Got up the same usual time, drove the same usual streets to my job, and had my usual cup of cocoa with a smooth Marlboro Light cigarette a few minutes after getting to work by 8am. By 8:45am the nation, the world, came to a screeching holt of shock and for a short time disbelief of what was happening and we would be forever changed. I happened to be walking past a coworker of mine on my way to the restroom when he stopped me and said that a plane just crashed into one of the WTC towers. I instantly thought, "Wow, that is terrible!", but at another moment thought, "Well, that will surely be hard to repair." And from there I walked onward to my destination. Obviously, what I was told was not really sinking in. Only minutes later I heard about the second tower and how each collapsed. At this time the looks on coworkers faces along with mine I'm sure were pasted with shock, anger, and sorrow. We had a small TV in a back office where streams of people were coming in to stand or sit and watch the terror that was happening to NYC. My own feelings were mixed with fear, anger, and the BIG question: Why? I started calling all my close friends and family to just simply say "I love you" and be sure they were okay. I'm sure like myself, many other people in the Detroit area were wondering if terrorism would hit the Renaissance Building in downtown Detroit or the Chrysler Tech Center located north of Detroit. My brother was located in Norfolk, Virginia at the Naval Base and I worried terribly if he was okay. I tried calling him, but got no answer. I do remember thinking over and over, "This is just a bad movie and it will be over soon." Well, unfortunately it wasn't some fictional story displayed on a cinema screen. This was REAL. I have to say it really made me see life, the nation, and the world much differently. The area in which I live and work for many days and weeks after the attacks, were so unbelievably quiet. It was so surreal and eery. You could see and feel how the everyday drivers on the streets were caring more for the stranger in the car next to him than ever before. Drivers were more courteous to each other. But I will never forget the looks on people's faces as they try to go on with their daily lives. I've shed a lot of tears over this tragedy and will never forget the day I woke up on Sept. 11th. Even though its been almost 11months since the attack and as much reading as I?ve done and staring at pictures, I still cannot imagine the feelings and emotions of the people who were right in the center of all of this. Tell us your story: We?re All The Same ?You are in line to fill out your paperwork to donate blood,? boomed the small, bearded gentleman using the black electric megaphone. ?From this point in line, it will take you between an hour and fifteen minutes and an hour and a half to get to the counter to get your paperwork for giving blood. The good news is, it only takes about 5 minutes to fill out the paperwork and the bad news is, there?s about a 5 hour wait before you are able to donate blood,? he bellowed. ?Man!? I thought to myself, ?that?s a sure way to clear out this line.? To my surprise, no one moved. Instead, they just seemed to listen more intently to this Red Cross volunteer bark out instructions to the line. I suppose I wouldn?t have been surprised if I was observing this scene in some third world country that had just been devastated by a natural disaster such as a flood or earthquake, but this scenario was about as far from the Third World as one could get. I am sitting in the parking lot of the Fountain Valley American Red Cross building in the heart of Orange County, California where the upscale population won?t wait 60 seconds at the drive-through window at McDonald?s without demanding a coupon for a free Big Mac for their inconvenience. This crowd of people didn?t even flinch at the news they would have to wait six and a half hours to let a stressed, overworked Red Cross nurse stick them with a 2? needle and drain them of quick pint of blood. Today is September 11, 2001, and the smoke, dust and debris still hangs in an ominous cloud over the spot where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once proudly stood. As I watch this crowd of hundreds of people waiting to play some small part in the healing and recovery that must follow and event like this, I am sure this scene is being played out in thousands of other locations throughout America. These are Americans, the ones my dad told me about after he survived the attack at Pearl Harbor. I never really got it when I heard my dad tell the stories of sacrifice and commitment and how America was united, until now. As I listen to what?s going on around me, I?m even more amazed. I can only understand about half the conversations; the others are in Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Korean and many others I can?t speak or recognize. ?We appreciate you all showing up to give blood and I hope you?ll bear with us as we try to move everyone through as quickly as possible?, screeched the megaphone man again. ?We only have 7 beds and it takes about 15 minutes per person to give blood so we can take care of about 28 people per hour.? I was sure this announcement would weed out the faint of heart, but I was wrong. No one moaned or complained, or even shook their head in disgust at this news. I expected to see a barrage of cell phones being whipped out so they could call their attorney or congressman or someone to help intercede and speed them through this process. After all, we are Orange County citizens and how dare you make us wait or inconvenience us in any way. ?Free snacks,? squeaked a tiny little voice shaking me from place of deep thought. I was staring in the face of a blonde, pony-tailed 6-year old as she thrust a box of cookies, chips and granola bars into my face. ?Thank you?, I replied while grabbing a small bag of cheese nips. I watched this little American for the next few minutes weave her way through the crowd of the hundreds of us who had already filled out our paperwork and were now, just waiting for the time to do our part. ?You must be at least 18 years old and weigh more than 110 pounds; and if you have given blood in the last 60 days, you will not be able to donate blood today,? bellowed the fellow with the megaphone. Finally the crowd reacts. A 12-year old, freckled faced boy complains, ?It?s not fair, my mom said it?s OK?. Two pretty and very thin young girls drop their heads and slowly leave the group of friends they had been traveling in line with. A frail looking older Vietnamese lady slowly walked out of line toward the command center table set up by the Red Cross in the parking lot. As I followed her movement through the crowd, I noticed a group of college-aged boys dressed in the same type athletic wear. As one of them turned around, I could read Orange Coast College Baseball on the back of his shirt. It looks like the entire baseball team had decided to skip practice to do their part. In the crowd, there was an atmosphere of charged excitement subdued by genuine reverence for the situation we were facing. There were many animated conversations taking place but there were no outbursts of laughter or expressions of joviality. This crowd was energized with the resolve to do something that would benefit those impacted the most by this terrible tragedy inflicted upon the people of the United States. ?Cold drinks; does anyone want a cold drink? Dad, do you want some cold water,? came a voice I recognized immediately. It was my 21 year-old daughter who had asked me to bring her to give blood today, and was now making her way through the crowd of Americans with both arms full of the official Orange County Drink, bottled water. Following along behind her, pushing a shopping cart FULL of cases of bottled water, was the old, (not so frail after all) Vietnamese woman. She was leaning all of her less than 110 pounds of weight against the shopping cart as she maneuvered it through the crowd. I felt a surge of emotion as I rapidly blinked back the tears that were trying to force their way out. I remember watching dad do the same thing every time he told the story of America?s reaction to Pearl Harbor. ?Thanks Noelle,? I said, reaching for the bottle of Crystal Geyser. As I slowly drank the cold water, I surveyed the entire crowd once again. Everyone was so completely different, but exactly the same. I didn't even know that the first plane had crashed until my father showed up at my house and told me. I immediately turned on the t.v. to see only horror. I could not remove myself from the t.v., a part of the whole nation died that day, our feeling of security. When i walk into my History teachers classroom, i see the sudents are deathly quiet watching the T.V. When i enter i realize that something bad has happened. I hear the repoirter on the tv talking about a plane crash. and i thought it might not be that much of a big deal. I sit in my seat, and watch with the rest of my classmates. Then the screen switches to this vision of a large building with smoke coming out of it and surrouding it. I look over at my friend, and cant believe this is happening. The more i watch i gradually find out that the plane crash wasnt on the ground, but that some plane has crashed into a major building in new york city. I begin to image whta it must have been like for the passengers on the aircraft. Knowing they were about to die, and in turn help to kill others. On the screen they kept haunting us by showing us over and over what must have happened, and the footage they had on it all. It was the most horrible thing i had seen at the time. Then it happened. We all of a sudden get the news broadcaster projecting the fact that there is another plane sighted and then BOOM! We watch in dismay as the second tower got hit. My teacher makes us do some work for a while, and at the end of class we turn the t.v. back on. We find out that the tower has crashed, we watch it all crash and burn to the ground, and a mass of dust and rubble go crashing all over the city as if a tidal wave of smoke. That again was a huge shock. a few of my classmates go running from the room, they have family that lives in new york, and they wonder if they are going to be ok or not. My reaction was one of bewilderment, shock, and of confusion. I didnt know what to think or what to do when the second tower crashed i was scared. When i got home i watched the T.V, the news, and reports. We could see the people accually jumping out of the buildings, we could see them on the t.v. it was horrible, we had tellephone conversations of family memeber able to call their loved ones minutes before death on the air planes. I began to cry. I remember thinking how horrible this is. This is an act of war, and we will catch who is responsible for it. My main thoghts were those of the famies who were effected directly, who were unsure if their loved ones were going to come home that night or not. It was a class of 10th graders; the subject for them is World History. The end of the previous week, I had been talking of the beginnings of Islam. A fellow teacher came to my door to tell me that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers; my classroom TV suddenly came on, and we saw the second plane hit. Some of my students acted like this was a movie or TV show; I said, "Folks, this is not something being done by some kind of special effects. This is really happening now -- right now, people are dying up there in New York. Don't think this is just for your entertainment -- this is real." I had the TV turned off so they could take a short test. When they finished, we turned it back on -- and I was so shocked then -- I said "Oh, my goodness!! That doesn't look like New York, it looks like the Pentagon.!" And a voice started speaking, saying we were looking at one wing of the Pentagon. A student teacher down the hall, who was about to retire from the Air Force and begin teaching, told us "I was most recently assigned, before coming to Keesler (Air Force Base) to the Pentagon; that plane has plowed into the area that is Army HQ. You see, I was in the in Middle of moving 5 states away to Pennsylvania. My truckload of all my household stuff had left on Monday, this was Tuesday, and I was to fly out on Wednesday. Sitting there knowing that the electricity would be shut off in a few hours, not knowing if and when I would be leaving. After several flight cancelations, and switching airlines, I got to fly out on Friday morning, and got to my new home around Midnight that night. Although hired as an editorial assistant I found myself wearing many hats. I recall vividly listening to the radio in our car as my wife and I pulled up to the newspaper office - she was dropping me off. The report we heard was that a small private plane had crashed into one of the World Trade towers. Seemed like significant news but nothing horrific. In just the few minutes that it took for me to get from my car to the newsroom though - the world changed. Forever. The newsroom contained no activity - very unusual for a Tuesday morning. All of my colleagues were huddled motionless around the small color television in the corner of the newsroom watching and listening as the events unfolded. I joined their shock and dismay - my stomach got nauseated. Soon the telephones starting ringing - the citizens of Clovis were making sure that the newspaper knew what was going on. One of the telephone calls reported that traffic going into nearby Cannon Air Force Base was backed up for miles - they had closed the gate to the base as a result of the attack on America. The editor considered that newsworthy and thought a picture of the traffic would make good copy. Time for me to put on a new hat. I got the order "go out to the base and take the pictures - make it quick!". My first photo shoot for a newspaper - I should have been thrilled but my mind and stomach were still churning. I had stood on the top of one of those towers back in the late 80's. I actually lived in the shadows of those towers for about six months while living on Governor's Island right off the tip of Manhattan - I had been in the Coast Guard. I felt violated even though I was 2000 miles from New York City. As I arrived at the base the traffic had dropped down to just a few hundred yards from the main gate - not very photographic. I was determined to do my job though. After parking my car about a half a mile from the gate to the base I walked quickly toward it carrying a very large and very expensive digital camera. It wasn't mine. As I started to take pictures of the traffic making it's way slowly toward the gate and of the Air Force Security Police personnel decked in full battle gear - the reality of what had happened began to sink in. Then reality really hit me when all of a sudden I was descended upon by a half-dozen armed uniformed military policemen. It seems that I looked awful suspicious standing there taking pictures - I might be a terrorist. My heart raced and my nerves jumped as the questioning began and the thought of them confiscating a $3000 camera that did not belong to me made me even more nervous. Finally, after some dialogue I was allowed to leave the premises intact and with the camera. I shook all the back to town. My picture made it to the front page and the Associated Press picked it up and carried it nationally. Quite a feat for my first news photograph. The thrill though just wasn't there. What was there was a bag of very mixed emotions. Sadness, anger, frustration, to name a few. Looking back I remember thinking to myself while being accosted by those military policemen - freedom, ours - will now be challenged more than ever. And not just by the enemy. When I returned to the office, my fellow workers were just standing there glued to the radio. They had the strangeous look on their face. I asked what was going on and as I stood next to them and heard the news, I just could not believe it. We all went over to the Doctor's Lounge where that was a teleivison set and watched in horror as they replayed the first plane crashing into the North Tower. Tell us your story: My husband and I had arrived several hours early to the Denver, CO airport for our flight to return home to Dayton, OH from going to visit our niece in Denver. Sharon, our niece, had mentioned that there was a great place to have breakfast at the Denver airport and watch the news near our concourse. We arrived early enough to try for the earlier flight back to Dayton. When we inquired, we were advised that yes, we could take the ealier flight out of Denver, but would still have to take our chances in Chicago, and most likely would be there waiting all day. We opted to just go and have breakfast. While having breakfast at the grill at the Denver airport, the breaking news came on announcing that a plane had hit the trade center. Comments were that it was probably a small plane. My husband said from the pictures, that he did not think that it was a small plane. As we watched the terrible thing, the next plane hit. We were stunned! I felt horror for the people. After a few minutes we decided to check on our flights, I noticed that our gate had been moved. I became concerned and suggestion instead of going to the new gate, we go to the customer service station. While waiting in line, an announcement came over advising that all flights were being delayed for seven hours. I told my husband, we are leaving the airport, we were not staying for seven hours. We rebooked our flights for the next day. My worry was other terrorist attacks! We could not get a car rental, all booked. We called my niece, and she came right over, she was the last car let on the airport. By the time she came, they had announced that the airport was closing and all bags would be held. Luckily, we were able to get out before it closed. Others had to wait for buses to take them to town and then disperse from there. We called home to let family know we were safe and not on a plane, before we left the airport. People having cell phones really helped in communications, soon all pay phones, had lines. After Sharon picked us up, we went to here house. We watched the news in horror for the next several days, unable to get a flight or car rental. We were stranded in Denver until Thursday and drove home arriving on Friday. We saw many cars filled with people as we crossed I-70 from Denver to Dayton. It was his mother calling to tell us to turn on the TV. I couldn't believe what I was looking at. It was like watching a movie. My friend, Natasha, worked on the 97th floor of tower 1. I tried getting a hold of her, but no answer. I didn't stop trying until I saw the towers fall. My heart sank into my stomach and I knew she was gone. The only thing I could feel at the time was anger and hate. Natasha was a beautiful woman who had everything going for her. Moving to New York was a huge deal for her. I along with several collegues were attending a software class on that fateful day. We had not taken a break all morning and finally broke for lunch about 1:00PM. One of the first persons out the door went downstairs in the building we were in to the restuarant we had seen on our way to class. She noticed everyone around standing in front of a barber shop watching televison. When she saw what had happened, she rushed back to the class to inform everyone. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just finished my shift as a Firefighter/Paramedic and was preparing to leave and go up to Fire Admin. to get fitted for new uniforms. As I came into the kitchen one of the Lt.s said that a plance had hit one of the twin towers. I watched for a few mins. thinking it was an accident then proceded to go to the Admin. office. Upon arriving there, their TV was on and I witnessed the second plane hitting the second tower. I lost my breath for a minute and thought "This is unbelievable". On my way home I heard about the Pentagon being hit and by that time I was in a panic. I got home and woke my husband up and said to him "The world is falling apart and you are sleeping. Get up, I need you" We remained glued to the TV all day and when we went to work that night (in a restaurant) we had the television on. I don't believe we turned it off for at least a week. Doing what I do for a living,it really affected my husband and I. You never think of bad things happening until after they do. And when we go to a fire, our first responsibility is to save lives so we would have been running in the twin towers. It is just automatic. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th, I woke up to turn on the TV and see a horrible sight. I thought war had broken out in the middle east or there was a bombing at a nuclear power plant. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine what had taken place in New York, Pennsylvania and Washinton DC. During this time, I was also dealing with my own shock, I had learned I was pregnant that morning before I turned on the TV. To make things even more interesting, my daughter's father was an active duty solider in the Army and had gone on 30 minute recall and was probably leaving the Country. That day was one I will NEVER forget. Once things had set in and I learned exactly what had happened back East, my heart sank. I remember crying for all of the people who had been lost and for their families. I never dreamed during my life that we could have been attacked like that and my worst nightmare had been broadcasted on TV. All during the day while I went to the doctor to confirm my pregnancy I kept in touch with family and friends. September 11th was truly a day that brings a great deal of sorrow to me because of the loss of life, but also a sense of hope because I knew on that day that my daugher, Jordan Renee was going to come into the world.
