Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was flying from BWI Airport in Maryland to Jacksonville, FL for a meeting and program review. We departed BWI around 8:00am and landed in Jacksonville at 10:00am. When we were going through the Jacksonville airport we noticed crowds around the TVs, then we realized that the planes had hit the twin towers, and then heard that a plane had struck the Pentagon. Meantime, my husband who works in Alexandria was frantically calling the hotel where I was staying trying to get in touch with me. Where he works in Alexandria, he saw the plane that crashed into the Pentagon and when it hit, their building shook. The business closed around 11:00 am that day. I was finally able to get in touch with my husband while I was at the airport in Jacksonville. Later that afternoon I was able to speak with our two boys. The boys knew I was flying down to Jacksonville, and both were afraid that I was killed. The flight back to BWI on Thursday, September 13, was cancelled out of Jacksonville. So we rented a car from Jacksonville and drove through the night to reach Maryland. I was right in front of dozens of TV screens in the TV sales area. the TVs had no sound. Suddendly i realized that everyone was looking at the TVs. there we saw the carnage. two towers came down one after the other. along with down came the human civilization. all our history of compassion and consideration for innocent lives, values and regard for life crashed. after the first thoughts came anger. came question why people can be so cuel. then came the conviction that we have to fight these people. these are not human beings. they are animals. but by now I have realized that america created these people. America supported all the unpopular governments in Asia and middle east. Supported unilaterally and unjustly the regims that killed its own people. provoked the instabilities and conflicts. and behaved like bully. the terrorism had to be coming. I visited NYC in May, so it was only a few months until it would be 5 years. Even though, time has passed, ground zero is still a very busy place. People still show their love for our country by leaving flowers, notes, etc. This was such a special moment for me. I've always wanted to go to ground zero, not only to see, but to feel what it was like to be there remembering that terrible day. I was overwhelmed and had tears rolling down my cheeks. I will hold this day in my heart forever, because I know what happened there on Sept. 11th. I may not have been there, but I have sympathy for everyone that perished that day. I have a brother is a United States Marine and just returned home from Iraq on Sept. 5th. I have to say that I was extremely happy that he and his platoon got home safe. It was an annnouncement saying that there was an attack on the pentagon and the twoon towers had been under attack. The tone of Mr.Healy's voice was so desloated ti sounded as if someone had lost a memeber of thier family it was such a sad momomnet in the history of the united states. I turned to my friend and said "what happened?" since I had neither listened to the radio, nor watched television that fateful morning. "Two planes hit the Twin Towers in New York" she replied, eyes still glued to the scene on the television. Awestruck, I sat down at my desk and searched for words. "My gosh" I slowly said, not really knowing what I was feeling as New York seemed so far away. Throughout the day, I either watched this tragedy on the news or discussed it with the people around me. When I came home, I spoke with my parents and younger brother as well. No one could believe that this was real. People never expect these occurrences to actually happen in our time. We read about them in history and think "what a shame," but it never truly sinks in that it was an actual event where real lives were taken. Until, that is, it happens to us. Like the old saying "you never know what you have until you no longer have it," we never appreciated our freedom and security until it was threatened to be taken away from us. In one instant, our lives were changed forever and we were forced to let go of all the hate and anger and unite as one nation, under God. I witnessed the attack and sent out two e-mails about it to family and friends. Here are my e-mails: (This first one I wrote @ 1:30 am Wednesday, 9/12/01 when I couldn't sleep after the attack) Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 8:55 am Brooklyn, NY A woman told me that a plane had crashed in to the World Trade Center. I opened the blinds of the office window and looked at the WTC, 5 miles away. The towers were framed by the window, as though I had a front row seat at a show, only this was real. The right hand tower (#1) had a thick plume of black, black smoke blowing to the south (my left). It billowed out from the upper floors of the building. It appeared that the plane had struck the building 15-20 floors from the top. I could see the antenna array on top of the building but I couldn't see much of the damage or the top of the second tower because of the smoke. Several of the people in the office and I discussed how such an accident could happen. Its kind of hard to not see a tower 1,350 feet tall. I set up my laptop and work files and occasionally watched the building from my front row seat. Then I noticed a black plane flying low, just over the tops of the nearby buildings. I thought to myself "He's flying awfully low." Then I realized it was an attack on the second tower seconds before the plane rammed into the building. I watched helplessly as the plane hit the building and a line of flame streaked through the building. This wasn't television or a movie special effect I was watching. The real horror was the realization that such scenes are "entertainment" in our culture except this time it was real. Real people, real fanatics, real murder, and very, very deliberate. The flame and smoke seemed to roll up the building from the point of impact and join the smoke from the first tower. We watched the sky, fearful of other attacks. The smoke continued to pour from both buildings. A stream of black, oily smoke stretched across my panorama, from one o'clock to ten o'clock. Tower # 2 appeared to have been hit 45 floors from the top. I was afraid that one or both buildings would lose the floors above the impact points. I wasn't prepared to lose both buildings. Tower #2 collapsed about 30 minutes after it was hit. The black smoke continued to pour from the building and then the building bulged out below the impact point. It appeared to transform itself from a solid building to crumbling chalk, emitting thick clouds of white dust/smoke that billowed up and covered both buildings. It looked like a sand castle that was crushed by a giant hand, so that the downward pressure caused the middle to "blow" out and disintegrate. It took 10-15 minutes for the cloud to settle. Tower 2 was gone, no rubble (from my point of view), no shell, no stub of a building, nothing. I thought of the rescue workers around the building, firemen, police, EMT's and I wondered how many were buried. Thirty minutes later Tower #1 collapsed. I could understand the collapse of Tower 2. I thought Tower 1 might lose the top floors but no more. Again, the bulge started below the impact point, smaller than the first one. For a moment I thought that perhaps the collapse would be limited to only the top half of the building but the debris pushed down through the remainder of the building and again a dust cloud rose. When it cleared (about 11:00) there was no sign that the World Trade Center towers had even existed. I keep thinking about that black plane and watching it explode in the tower. I think about what the people sitting at their desks saw and thought before they died and I think about the terror of the passengers on board the plane. And I also think about the criminals who committed these acts. How do you stop an attack when your attacker is committed to killing himself? I imagine being on one of those planes and the frustration and anger at being able to do nothing about it. Perhaps that is what makes me the angriest, the use of our own people to attack us. (The second e-mail I wrote Wednesday night, 9/12/01 after considering my daughter's comment) When I called my family Tuesday night I talked to each of my kids about the terrorist attack. My two teenagers, Matthew & Kathleen, had an appreciation for what had happened without being melodramatic. I was not sure about what my nine year old Maryellyn would say. She is the melodramatic one who resists all change and has the greatest empathy among my three children. Maryellyn even cried when we got rid of our old refrigerator. So I was somewhat concerned when I asked if she had watched the news reports. "Yes" she replied. What do you think about it, I asked. "Daddy, did you really see it happen?" Yes, I saw everything after the first plane struck. "Cool!" she replied Needless to say I was a little surprised by her response. I expected tears for the victims, or even calm indifference for something that didn't affect her world, but never "Cool!" At the time I attributed it to the attitude of a nine year old who only knew that her father had directly witnessed a historic event. I thought she didn't really appreciate what had happened and that if she did her answer would change. Maryellyn, I was wrong, it is Cool. In our church we use a phrase, a litany (if Baptists have such things). "God is good...all the time. All the time...God is good." We generally use the phrase in worship or when we are particularly joyful, to acknowledge God's bounty. It is not just about God being good but also doing good to a sinful mankind. If we believe that God is good, all the time and that All the time, God is good. Then we must believe that God is sovereign, and sovereign all the time. For how can God be good and do good all the time unless He is sovereign and able to ordain that He is good and wills to do good, all the time? "All the time" means that nothing can interfere or change His desire for our own eventual good, not this world with devils filled or earthly powers or the prince of darkness grim can change God's character or will. This is our joy. This is why in prosperity we praise God, in turmoil we praise God, in joyful celebration we praise God, and in the midst of pain and grief we praise God. I don't know how God will use this but He will use it. Look at what has already occurred, a public acknowledgment of prayer in our government, a sense of unity among our nation, a president who speaks openly of his faith. All things work together to God's glory, even this crime. And that is Cool. God is sovereign...all the time. All the time...God is sovereign. My husband was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and while there we both worked in Manhattan. On September 7, I returned to Chicago from New York, where we had flown to attend a family member's wedding. While in New York, I bought a painting of the Twin Towers for my daughter, because she loves everything about New York. We had just started to get the last preparations ready to leave for the day, when an announcement was made that a plane had hit the North Tower. I immediately sat down an watched the smoke. I worried about friends and family who may have been in the area, and wondered how such a horrible accident could have occurred. When I saw the second plane hit, my first words were "This is terrorism. That can't be an accident!" My daughter, 3 years old at the time, said "Mommy, why did that airplane hit that building." Then she ran to her room and brought me the painting that we had not yet hung and said "Is that the building?" That's when I realized that she was watching, too, and closely. I tried to explain that it was a bad accident, but decided to retreat into another room to find something more suitable for her. I spent the rest of the day fielding phone calls from friends and family, trying to make sure that I had returned to Chicago safely. I also saw my husband on the verge of a mental breakdown as he panicked over family that he could not reach. I spent the day trying to calm the man, and shield the child. Much of it is a blur, but I will never forget the images. I spent the entire day trying to remain calm for the sake of my family. When my daughter went to sleep that night, I stayed in her bed for a long time, apologizing to her for bringing her into such a cruel world. Thankfully, in her sleep, she never heard a word. I collapsed onto my own bed and cried until I couldn't find another tear. We still have the painting of the Twin Towers in her bedroom and once in a while she mentions it. Sometimes she reminds me that "Airplanes shouldn't hit buildings." I'll never be the same. I hope that my daughter will never have to feel the way that I did that day. My husband and I have been scarred for life, but I know that many other people were affected in a much deeper way. I have not been on an airplane since September 7th, 2001, nor have I allowed my daughter to fly. I don't know when I will again. It will be imprinted in all our minds and all our hearts from now until forever. That tragic day has left a mark on the whole country if not the whole world. That day will be remembered as the day the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were attacked by two high-jacked passenger planes. The day that the terrorists finally found their way into our own airplanes. And in a few hours would run them into our own buildings and change our lives forever. The day of tragedy and horror. The 9-11 incidents will not be forgotten. It has changed the way many people think including my friends, my family and I. I think that everyone now has a little more pride because they are an American. I know now what it means to be an American. My friends and I have sent in money for the victims and their families on 9-11 . When I got home the day it happened, our whole family sat and watched the horrifying scenes play back on the T.V. over and over again. It made me angry and I found out the next day in school that a lot of people were. It has affected my entire generation and we will always remember that day. 9-11 brought us as a nation together and the whole nation united to help one another. But I still think it is a little sad that it had to come to that. That terrible tragedy was the thing that united our Nation. I?ve seen many people now showing their pride as an American. I?ve seen so many flags and the words ?God Bless America? written everywhere. It is really nice to see and to think that if you needed something someone would be there for you. America has changed so much. And the battle against terrorists who terrorize America will never be over. My life has changed since 9-11. Everyday I wake up having a little more appreciation for my country. I think about the incidents everyday. There is no way you can get the scenes out of your head when you see two planes running into the Twin Towers and thinking there are so many innocent people inside. It has changed my life because it makes me think of all the times when I complain about the little things in life. If I lose something it?s not that big of a deal anymore. It?s not some sort of tragedy. 9-11 was. 9-11 will forever be in my mind. One day when my children or my grandchildren ask me what happened that day I?ll probably be able to tell them exactly where I was (math class) what I was doing and what happened when I got home. I will always remember and so will the rest of the world. 9-11 will live on through history and generations will come to learn about that horrifying day. When I stepped into my classroom I saw my teacher crying, wondering why she might be crying. I was thinking to myself, why? would she be crying. I looked up at the television, to see the newscaster flashing the same report over and over. At first I couldn't figure out what was going on. I was not aware of what really happened until I arrived at work to find everyone thoughout the building huddling around every TV set present. Working where I did, I was use to disasters, but 99.9% are natural, and this was something totally different to the US. The whole morning was a blurr of activity, but I remeber after both towers fell, we had a meeting, and the whole operation shifted gears. I visited the pentagon about and hour after, and was directed to travel to NYC. I drove myself, and an entire entourage of ARC employee's and volunteers to NYC in 3.5 hours. The following 3 weeks are something I have blocked out of memory, few of us received any sleep for almost a week, and the rest is history and something I will never forget. Tell us your story: I was exiting the subway station the morning of September 11th at the Broadway Nassau stop(2 blocks away from 2WTC) and was on my way to begin my work day on the 93rd floor there. As I walked up the subway stairs to Fulton street I could sense something was wrong. The usually bustling street had halted and the heads of pedestrians were bent backwards and their eyes were fixed to the sky. I could hear light sobs comming from a women and asked her what was wrong.. "A plane hit the tower and people are jumping out of the building," she said. Her words were puntuated by the second plane crashing into the South Tower. The sound resonated in my ears. All the pedestrians fled east down Fulton Street towards the water. My feet were still in climbing stair/subway mode (as I was only on street level for appoximately 40 seconds)so I flipped right back around and headed back downstairs towards the train. I was so shooken up I could barely swipe my metro card at the turnstyle. When I made it through I starded screeming at strangers.. 'Don't go upstairs there are bombs up there.' I had no idea what I was saying as I ran down the ramp. I waited for the next uptown train. I got on. It stopped at the Chambers Street World Trade Center stop (right underneath the building) and people got out. I still didn't know what was going on and if I had to go into the office or not. So, I got out at the following stop, Canal Street to have a look. When I got out of the train all the faces were looking South and when I looked South I could feel the beginnings of a lump welling in my throat and my upper lip started to quiver. However, after my wife got out of the shower she woke me saying "Somethings going on in New York. One of the towers is on fire and it looks pretty bad." I got up and went into the living room where I sat on the couch and stared at the t.v. in amazement. My first thoughts were 'how could a fire that big have gotten this out of control?' and then the reporters began speculating that a plane had hit the tower. My wife left for work, and the reports confirmed that it was definately a plane that crashed into the tower. I called my Dad back in Delaware and asked if he had heard. He said that they were talking about it on the radio, but that it probably was no big deal. He assumed like so many did that it was a small twin engine plan that had problems and lost its way. I told him that I was looking at the pictures and there was no way a small plane did that. We disconnected, and shortly after the second plane hit as I was watching. I thought I was seeing things until they did a replay and confirmed that it was a passenger jet. I was on the phone with my parents most of the day, and we all screamed and cried when the towers fell. My wife was sent home early, and we held eachother all night, crying in disbelief. As long as I live I will never forget the way I felt that day, nor will I ever forgive those who committed this shameful criminal act. Tell us your story: I am 100% disabled and my wife called me and told me to turn on the TV, I got it on just in time to see the 2nd plane crash into the TWC. I started to get sick and than angry. I went into my room and cried. I felt helpless seeing all these great people, Firemen, Policemen and others working to save the people. Than the building fell and I knew they were all gone. I wish I could put my hand on the shoulder of each victim, hero and their families who died on 11 Sept. I would like to take their pain and let their suffering end. I do know that all of the people who died that day are with God and we will see them again. We will know why and we will know the courage of people like the ones on Flt 93. May God watch over all of you and guide you. May God give his blessing to the dead and his love to the families. I am so sorry for all of you. I was driving my 3 year old to school and myself to work (at the same school). I didn't really know what happened. During the morning I was scheduled to speak with parents with our diagnostic team. One parent called and I happened to answer the phone. This was around 9:15 a.m.. She was very afraid. She called to say she wasn't sending her child to school that day and then she told me "the united states is being attacked". She gave me scetchy details. I immediately called my husband who was working at a high rise in Chicago, Illinois. I called my younger brother who works at O'hare International Airport but was supposed to go to the Art Institute that day. The thing about 9/11 for me is it was supposed to be this awesome day. My dad had battled many illnesses, rare illnesses and was going to be released from the hospital on 9/14 after an almost 4 month stay. September 11 was his home training program. I remember I kept praying that we would still be able to go to the hospital for the training. I also remember my dad telling me he never thought he'd ever see anything like 9/11, and he was 74 years old and spent 6 years in the airforce! We went to the hospital for the training. Every single parent showed up on time for their conference that day. When I got home every house on my street had their flags out and by 7 p.m. almost every neighbor was at my house. The days that followed were sad, scary, unforgettable. I will always associate those days with my dad's triumph from the hospital. My dad passed away completely unexpectedly on December 21, 2001. Sometimes I think, now he knows all those other people who passed away on 9/11. Tell us your story: i had an appointment at 9 that morning, and as usual, i was early. i arrived at about 8:45 and when i left an hour later, the whole world had changed forever. i remember getting in my car and turning on my favorite radio station and the DJ was sobbing. i thought it was one of those ridiculous morning-radio pranks until i looked around and noticed that people were crying in their cars, driving so slow, stopping in the middle of the street. when i heard the words "one of the world trade towers has just collapsed," i actually got really angry. i thought, if this is a joke, it's a LOUSY one. i never dreamed it could be real. i had been on my yearly visit to new york a few months before and had stood on top of that building, taking in the beauty of steel and water and action, all that i never see in my small town. the world trade center was a FORTRESS; it couldn't fall! i drove home, getting more and more terrified along the way, because no one could have THAT terrible of a sense of humor. i couldn't get my key in the lock since i was shaking so bad. looking back, i'm thankful for those moments of uncertainty. they were the last moments in the life of the person i used to be. when i finally managed to turn on the television, the images i saw literally dropped me to my knees. airplanes and fireballs and bodies falling from the sky, that plume of dust that used to be desks and walls and people... i called my mother, of course. i think we all wanted our mothers on that morning. she was calm, and i was screaming. i could tell by the controlled tone of her voice that she felt what i feared in my heart: the world was ending. she begged me to join her, and i somehow made the ten minute trip despite my tears and terror. you know what saved my sanity that day? i'll never forget this: i was stopped at a light, listening to what everyone in the country was listening to, and i was sobbing. i heard the person beside me honk his horn, and when i looked over, he pointed to his radio. i nodded, and he mouthed, "it's going to be okay, i promise." comfort. we all tried to comfort each other, even perfect strangers stopped at a red light. the rest of my story is pretty much like the rest, except, of course, for those told by the people who were in new york, washington, pennsylvania. i cried some more, then i got angry, and eventually, i got numb. i'm still not over what happened that day. i moved to chicago, and i get nervous when i see low-flying planes or when too many sirens are blaring at once. i wait for the news that it's happened again. i used to be so naive, so innocent. i felt so safe and i didn't even know it. now i'm afraid. Before I could figure out what was happening, I saw a plane fly into one of the twin towers. As I kept listening I figured out what happened and felt so scared because I thought that we were going to be in a war. Then I went to school, and only a few people even knew that something had happened, so I told everyone what I had seen. Then later on my health teacher told us that there had been two other planes, but that only one had hit something. Throughout the day I got more and more frustrated because the teachers wouldn't tell us what was going on and they kept leaving for meetings with the principal, so all the students were very confused.
