Like always I had trouble getting up to go to school; just the usual, falling asleep in the shower, during breakfast, and while I'm changing. So anyways, I finally got to school and started another regular day. First period went as slow as usual. Then, something was wrong during break. I remember seeing a lot of people crying and panicking. I did not pay attention to it, I didn't know what was going on. Then I got to my class and I saw it. The two towers were in smoke. My friends and I could not believe it. Especially when the first tower went down. I tried not to think about that same day, as if it didn't had happened. I couldn't do it. I couldn;t believe the U.S. was attacked, and the two towers were gone. Since I was a little kid back in my country I always heard stuff about how great the U.S. is, and also about the twin towers. There was time when the only thing I knew about the U.S. was that the twin towers were in New York and that tehy were the tallest buildings in the world. I turned on the television so my daughter could watch cartoons before we left for the day. Instead what I saw will stay etched in my mind for the rest of my life, like so many other people. The first plane had already crashed into Tower and a just sat there stunned. At first I thought maybe it was just a horrible accident, but then it was announced that another plane had crashed into the other Tower. It was like I could hardly speak. I had my children there and I called my husband to just hear his voice almost to resure me. Then news came of the Pentagon. Then the news of the plane crashing in a field in Pennsylvania. I didn't even leave my home that day. I didn't know any one person directly that was at any of the sites. But I still felt a loss as most Americans did. Those we lost may, we will be greatly missed. Those Brave Fireman, EMS workers, Police, you go out there every day for us, may god be with you. To those you lost, you are in my prayers. We will never forget this day, it will be in the history books that our children, grandchildren, and other future generations will study, it will be in our minds forever. We have great leaders in this country who stood strong, and gave us leadership, and courage when it would have been easy to run and hide, but America has never done that and it showed the world that. Still to this day the National Anthem will bring tears to my eyes for the pride I have for the WONDERFUL COUNTRY that I live in. And today 1 year later my FLAG is still flying. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work when my wife called to let me know that an explosion had occurred at the World Trade Center. At the time, I did not understand the implications of the occurrence. Within an hour, many of the people at work were given the option to go home. Watching the news the entire evening with our children was a difficult but memorable experience. We had an opportunity to explain why evil exist in light of what the Bible teaches. More importantly, it provided a reference point for giving them an eternal perspective to the fallen nature of this world and the hope we have when Jesus Christ returns. I did not try to play down the tradegy of the moment or the importance of reacting responsibly to those that perpetrated the injustice. In many respects, although I would never wish the atrocity on any other human being, I'm glad my children were exposed to tragedy. They not only learned that tragedy happens to the "just and unjust" and that life is unfair, but more importantly, they can have the assurance that God will deal justly with evil. We were all taking a quiz and a announcement came over the intercom telling us to turn on the news in our classrooms and that there had been a bombing at the WTC. we all stopped what we were doing and looked up at the TV. Thats when we all seen the 1st building in flames. Everyone in the classroom was stunned and in disbelief. All you here in the classroom was Oh My Gosh what happened?, wow!, just little comments like that. Thats when we watched the second plane hit the other building. Now that was definintly something that had freaked us all out. We couldnt believe what we had just seen. Is that possible? A huge plane flying into a building like that? We all questioned that but it was odvious to us that it was possible. After that we all just sat in silence, a few comments here and there but mostly silence. We pretty much sat in all our classes that day and watched the news. Then someone called in a bombthreat at our school and we all had to go out to the parking lot. Then we were all sent out to be with our familys. That day I was worried b/c I knew that my cousin Katherine was a flight attendent. To her luck and the luck of our familys we all feel as if she got a second chance at life b/c she was at Boston Airport getting ready to take off and they had canceled all of the flights. Once everyone was off her plane they found 2 of the same knives that were used in the previous hijackings. She was about to take off with terrorists on her plane. She told me that the FBI came to her house that night to find out if she remembered what the guys looked like. I was just so happy she was ok. September 11th to me was a day that brought our country closer but in a way that this country should have never seen. It was 9:10 am according to the cable box. I had just begun making the bed when my husband yelled back to me to put on CNN that a plane had hit the trade center. I stared in awe, unsure if what I saw was real or a movie scene. Much to our horror and shock it was real. A few moments later the second plane hit and within moments we knew that our life was about to change forever. When we witnessed the towers falling it broke our hearts. To know so many people died senselessly. Being former New Yorkers we felt the rage and anger of not being able to do anything. We couldn't read the paper or watch tv w/o crying a river of tears. Tell us your story: I was going into a meeting that morning and right before we entered the meeting someone said they heard something had happened at the WTC but they were not sure, something to do with an airplane. 2 hours later the meeting was adjourned and when I returned to my desk there were 2 calls waiting for me, my sister and mother were frantic. I had no idea what had taken place while I was in that meeting and hearing my mother and sister frantic was upsetting. My brother who is soon retiring from the Air Force was at the Pentagon that day. We had no idea where he was and if he was OK. I left work and joined some friends and watched the pictures and got the full story for the first time, of the WTC, Shanksville PA and the Pentagon. The first feelings were of incredulity and then saddness and then fear. All I could think of was all those people trapped and the pain, fear, and hopelessness they must have felt when the attacks occured. Mostly at that point in time I wanted to hear from my brother Bob Allen, he is a wonderful loving brother, husband, father. Hours later my sister-in-law Mayo called me and assured me he was OK. He was there but escaped unharmed....physically. This whole tragedy has been significant to me as this is the 2nd disaster I have experienced so close to home. Hurricane Andrew was the first and I saw the American people pull together to help each other and once again the people were called upon to pull together again. I am grateful to be a part of such a couragous, kind, loving country. I have shed many tears for the dead, but also for the living who have much greater losses in their families. I am so proud to know I live in a place filled with heros from all walks of life and remember this is what it's all about, our forefathers fought for freedom and through the years generations have repeatedly fought for our freedom I guess it is our turn now to show what a great country the U.S.A really is and to continue the presevation of something held so dear. I will never forget the lives that have been given in order for my family, friends, fellow country people and myself to live in the free world. Tell us your story: Dear Friends and Colleagues: ???This is the story of one New York urban historian's experience on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. ?At approximately 8:45AM I was on the ninth floor of the Municipal Building in the offices of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission where I serve as one of the Commissioners. We were assembling to start our weekly hearing. We heard the tremendous boom of the plane striking the North Tower and a sickened staff person called out for all to see it. ?We had a clear view of both towers over City Hall Park. ?There was a gaping black hole in the North facade of the building and flames burning intensely. By now you have all seen the images on television so I can't add enough words here to describe the physical dimension. The sky was intensely blue and winking in the sunlight were the papers that had been blown out of the offices. A strange sight but one that was a terrible clue to the level of destruction. Although we knew a plane had struck, everyone thought it was an accident. That misunderstanding was overthrown when the second plane struck creating the immense fireball in the South Tower. We were shocked into total silence and then we agreed to evacuate the building. Who knew what tall building would be next? I quickly called my daughter's school in Brooklyn to alert them since I knew of parents who worked at the WTC. I called my husband's office -- he was on the 26th floor at 120 Broadway, the famous Equitable Building, catty corner across Liberty Park from the South Tower -- and learned that he too was evacuating. ???When we descended to street level, we joined many others looking up, mesmerized at the horrific spectacle. We were roused from our reverie by police officers who were urging people to move north, away from the area. ?We joined streams of people walking quickly, but calmly, talking quietly, walking north, uptown, past the state and federal courts in Foley Square, which were bring cordoned off, and then up through the streets of Chinatown. ?We turned constantly to look south at the grim views of the billowing smoke rising from the towers. We had already started to make decisions about how to get home. The pedestrian path onto the Brooklyn Bridge is right at the base of the Municipal Building. ?I was afraid to walk over the bridge, something I normally do every week from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I was afraid it would be another target. (My husband did walk over the bridge and heard and witnessed the fall of the South tower from that vantage point.) I, like many others, was afraid to take the subway, afraid of getting stuck or of something worse. ?So I chose to walk to Brooklyn over the Williamsburg Bridge, at the eastern end of Houston Street, ?knowing that there was a pedestrian passageway there. I wasn't sure about accessibility to the Manhattan Bridge, though of course within a short time, the traffic on all the bridges was curtailed, either to allow emergency vehicles to come into Manhattan, or to allow people to walk out. ???I walked across the bridge with a colleague. We turned frequently to see the Trade Center buildings, watching the plume of smoke grow larger and larger as it filled the sky ominously over lower Manhattan, the harbor and south Brooklyn. ?We could not smell the acrid odor that later became so familiar because of the direction of the wind. At about midpoint on the bridge, we turned yet again, but this time we couldn't see the South tower. We couldn't figure this out -- how could our angle of vision have changed so dramatically in just three or four minutes since our last glimpse? ?We asked a cyclist who was sitting and watching, "Why can't we see the South Tower?" ?? ???His answer, "Because it just collapsed." ?To say we were stunned doesn't even begin to express what we felt. It was the moment that defined the grotesque awfulness of all that was happening. ?It was the moment when we understood that the history of our city and nation were changed forever. It was the moment when we knew how enormous the losses were going to be, among the workers in the towers, and among the fire and police who had responded so quickly. Unfathomable. Reality shifted. Despair engulfs us still. ???After a few minutes, we continued on our way, sober, incredulous, and mourning, trying to comprehend the scale of death and destruction. As we walked down the ramp from the bridge to the streets of Williamsburg, a rooster crowed. ?In the heart of this wounded world city, a rooster crowed. ???The sidewalks were filled with people. Hispanic, Hasidic, and people from every ethnic group in the city. Everyone coming off the bridge was focused on getting home. It was the only way, it seemed, that people would be able to know that their friends and family were all right because no phones were working -- cell, public and in the stores, nothing worked. ?People from the neighborhood were listening to radios, and standing out in the streets, talking to one another. Ordinary life had stopped. ?? ???I wasn't quite sure how to walk from Williamsburg to downtown Brooklyn though I knew the general direction. ?The trains had been stopped by this point, and busses were packed, even if I had known what to take. So, finally, after some time, I was able to see a map and plot my route. ?As we walked in one direction, we encountered people walking the opposite way, having come back to Brooklyn over the other bridges. It seemed as though the whole city was in motion. We stopped at a crowd gathered around a television set and learned of the collapse of the second tower. There was nothing one could say but to truly, for the first time, know evil. ???After 2 ? hours of steady walking, I reached my daughter's school in downtown Brooklyn and learned my husband had come through to get her and then walked home. What a relief to know that they were safe. I embraced my friends and learned that the WTC parents had not gone to work that day - a miracle - and were safe. I went home and found the yard and stoop gritty with ash as though a volcano had erupted. Friends of ours in other neighborhoods found letters in their backyards, carried on the wind from WTC firms. ?I spent the next two days with my family, fielding phone calls from family and friends near and far, assuring them of our well being. That's all we wanted to do - to make contact and talk and try and understand and to comfort one another. We talked with my daughter, who was very upset at the loss of a part of Manhattan she has spent much time in. "When will they rebuild?" "Well maybe they won't. Maybe they will create a memorial." "Why can't they have new buildings and a memorial?" Who knows the answers? Who knows anything? ?????? ???Now some 72 hours later, life is not back to normal. Concentrating on work is hard. ?Everyone feels the pall hanging over the city, metaphysically and physically. ?As a lifelong New Yorker, with my professional life centered on the history of the city generally and its physical development, I feel so bereft. The cityscape that I have known since college has been irrevocably altered. The very first slides I took as I began to study New York's architecture were of the great steel arches of the towers at street level, as construction began. Now, they are bent and twisted in the rubble. Many of the older buildings which have been designated official city landmarks about which I and others care so passionately, are damaged. ?I have searched the fleeting views on television, and read the newspapers closely, to learn their fate. ?Rubble and debris fill the churchyards of Trinity and St. Paul's, and the streets in front of the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall. What is the fate of the twin Trinity Buildings and 90 West Street , directly exposed to the blast? ?The Woolworth Building was shielded by others but what of its foundations? ???At any place like the WTC and the World Financial Center, the buildings are so large that on a daily basis, one experienced only parts of them. For me, the Borders book store was a frequent destination at the base of the North tower. There I found the mysteries I read to relax, the children's books for my daughter, and more arcane publications that one wouldn't expect in a mass market stock such as a biography of Dorothy Day. ?I exited the subways into the Lower Concourse. I visited the Farmers Market in the open space at the foot of the South Tower and bought produce and my favorite baked goods there. I bicycled along the brand new bicycle path in front of the World Financial Center on my way north, and at other moments, through the Hudson River park behind Battery Park City. ???There were times when the WTC as part of the city scape was the object of much attention on my part. Last Sunday, the 9th of September, I spent several hours thinking about a proposed new park at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge while looking across the East River at Lower Manhattan. The pain is still with me, I guess.My story is as follows. I worked at Ronald Reagen national airport as a telephone technician. I was in my office when a coworker announced to us that the WTC towers had been hit. It's War he stated. Me and my supervisor decided to go to the Operation center for the Airport to watch T.V. there. On the way,I recall telling him that the date was 9/11. The Operation Area is located in a long hallway and as We approached we could see a flurry of activity near the main office. As we got closer I heard the Airport manager ask an operations officer to move a camera so that they could view the Pentagon. He stated that it had just been hit. My heart sank, my mother works in the Pentagon and My father works across the way. Just then my cell phone rang, it was my sister, hysterical, asking me what was happening. She had just heard that the Pentagon was hit had tried to call Mom and Dad but got only busy tones. I dont remeber what I told her I think I asked her to keep trying Mom and Dad's cell phone. My supervisor could tell I was upset so he sent me back to the office. On the way back I could smell the smoke in the air and I could see a large ploom in the direction of the pentagon.I could not get myself together. I was walking around the office crying and hiting the walls and kicking the doors. I could not belive it. I thought my mother and possible my farther were dead. To make matters worse there was still a plane in the Air and it was headed to the D.C. area. My sister then called a coworker to tell me that she had reached my parents they were both safe, I then talk to my sister over the the phone while she talked to my parents. I wanted my parents to walk up the street to a location were I could get them and take them home(the Airport is located about Five minutes from the Pentagon). My supervisor wanted me to get everyone in the office to a safe location because of the threat from the plane that was in the Air. As we headed outside some guys came running up to us with big battle shotguns and bullet proof vest yelling at us to evacuate the Area ( to this day I am not sure which agency they worked for). Me and another coworker got into my company truck and heade out. My then girlfriend worked at the airport with me and I wanted to find her a take her with us but I could not find her. Later she told me she saw me drive by but she was so upset she could not scream out to me. I headed immeaditly were I thought my parents might be. My path headed right by the pentagon. There were smoke and flames and fire trucks outside the building. I was then forced to get off the main highway and take a side street. As I drove through Crystal City I actualy find my parents standing on a corner. I picked them up and took them to my apartment. On the way there My boss called me and told me that I needed to head back because there was some emergency work we needed to do. The way back thought was all blocked off. I actualy used my Airport badge to bypass some of the roadblocks to get to the Airport. I spent the rest of the day and night at the Airport in case anything need to be hooked up. We did nothing but watch t.v. . I guess I watched T.V. all week long glued to every news report, we never shut it off scared that something else could happen. Usually they have piped in music over the intercom, but this was an early day for me to go to work and so we had a radio on in the back room where I worked. They had annouced around 9am that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. We then thought that is was just an accident,but then the other annoucement came over the radio that a second plane had hit the other tower, then I knew it was no accident. The store manager turned the radio on so that the whole store could hear what was happening. Then they announced that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. One of my co-workers son worked at the Pentagon an asked to go home so she could check to see if he was ok. He was in the military and stationed at the Pentagon. Thank heavens he was not there that day and was ok. When I got off of work,which was early I went straight home and turned the tv on. I could not believe what I was seeing. I just stood there at the tv in disbelief. They showed it over and over again and I still could not believe what was going on. Then they showed the people falling from the windows and it was so hard to believe.It was like watching a disaster movie. Then the towers fell and I could not believe it. I have never been to the World Trade Center so it was hard for me to imagine how tall they were. After it was all over and it was nothing but dust, like a bomb had hit.I just could not think that those poor people in those towers and the ones who where on the ground when they came down where crushed to nothing. Its still hard to imagine it.Last year I went to the area where the Towers where and you would never know they had been there. It was so sad to see it.Some of the buildings still had the windows out and the firestation near the Trade Center was closed.I thought of the people who lost their lives at the Pentagon and in Penna. I read the 911 Commission and it made me so angry when they talked about those terrorist.It was sad reading the exerts from the phone converstations the passengers had. I just could not fathom all the missing posters and pictures that where hanging there those weeks after the terrible tradegy and what the families were going through. I was not there but my heart was and it still is. Last year I went to NY to visit my mother in law and went to the site the WTC was and then I went out to Ellis Island.On our way back we stopped there in the little park near the ferry where they have the Sphere that was at the WTC,The round ball. Its a wonder that it survived though all that damage. This was also the day the ferry hit the dock,as we were in the park when all the police and ambulances was going there.My story is not that important,but it will be a day that none of us will ever forget.It will be a reminder that this awful terrorist attack can happen here in our country.I will always stay in my heart that I must depend my country in anyway I can to protect it from these terrorist who are cowards and who say they do this for God, but God will not reward them,they are murderers and they are the "INFIDELS", not us.All I can say is God Bless our country and God Bless those who did survive this terrible tragedy, and God Bless those who lost their lives and may God always keep his arms around them. She had access to the T.V. and kept me updated on the phone. On one of the calls she said that the World Trade Centers had been hit and were on fire,no sooner than we had hung up that she called right back and said that the Pentagon had also been hit and the first tower had fallen. Being a military wife for 20 years I can only say that I've had this type of feeling once and that was when Desert Storm started and my husband was there and not knowing where he was. I could not imagine how many lives had been lost that day. When I got home that night the scenes on the T.V. were undescriblable and watching the death toll rise over the next few days were very hard. The images are something I will never forget. It has changed my life forever, things that seemed so important now were so small in the realm of things. I grieve for all who lost someone on that terrible day. I now pray everyday and keep my family, friends and all who matter to me so much closer and tell them each time I see or speak to one of them how much I love them. I can only hope that the children who lost a parent that day will only feel pride and love when remembering those that they lost. Sometimes it seems such a waste to bring children into this sometimes cruel world. My greatest wish for the future is that one of those children will be the great peacemaker of all time. I sent this note on the evening of Sept 11th. Several days later, I saved the note realizing I documented my experiences that day. ------------------------------ My Note To A Friend in Singapore Thank you for your kind note. I'm fine, but today will most likely be the most memorable day of my life... but for all the wrong reasons. Going to work this morning, my Subway discharged all passengers about a quarter mile north of the Trade Center. The announcement simply said, "Due to an emergency, all passengers must discharge immediately". When I came up out of the Subway, I continued walking downtown. I noticed the flow of people was very much going against me. People quickly hurrying uptown with concerned looks on their faces. When I reached the Trade Center, I stopped to watch in horror as the first Tower was burning. There was black smoke billowing from what appeared to be a gapping hole in the North face of the tower. I noticed fire starting to spread around the perimeter of the tower. It had an impossible feeling... this couldn't be true. Other people standing around me were talking of a bomb. Another mentioned a plane hit the tower. That sounded ridiculous. I felt there was no way that was possible. I continued to head downtown and moments later stopped about 2 blocks from the Towers. I saw several colleagues on the street and stopped to talk about the amazing scene we were witnessing. Moments later, as we continued to speak, we saw the second plane flying in a semicircle around the Towers. It never occurred to us that this was a moment of destiny. We watched in incredulous disbelief as the plane crashed into the south Tower with deafening thunder. A sound and a feeling that will be etched in my soul forever. Seeing the ball of flames shoot out the other side of the tower was horribly surreal. Like being in a 1970s disaster film. We watched in horror as we saw several people flying off the sides of the building to their deaths. I couldn't watch anymore. Having no idea that the Trade Center would collapse, I made my way down to 55 Water St (the tip of Manhattan where I've been consulting). My client is on the 48th Floor of that building. While going up in the elevator, power was lost as the elevator first bounced and began to free fall. I thought the building was going down. My life truly passed before my eyes. I could only think of my family. I thought of 3 boys with no father. Luckily the elevator stabilized in a few seconds. It turns out, the building lost power when the first tower (8 blocks north) collapsed. When I made it back down to the street, I was caught in the throngs of people running away from the WTC. All hell had broken loose. I wasn't sure what to do, I but I knew I shouldn't stay where I was. I joined the masses of people in what seemed like an exodus from hell. Although it was a brilliantly sunny day, the sun was just not visible. The sky was covered with ash like debris. It became difficult to breathe. I took off my shirt and wrapped it around my face to act as a filter. I walked up the East side of Lower Manhattan trying to head north. I decided to make my way over to Broadway where I could continue to head up to Midtown. When I made it to the City Hall area (2 blocks from the Trade Center) , I felt a tremendous rumbling. The North Tower was collapsing. I saw the huge cloud of billowing debris turn onto Broadway by City Hall. I then was among the thousands of people running for their lives. People were screaming, people were crying.. The cloud shortly caught up with me and I was blanketed with debris. I was brought down to my knees. A woman who was running tripped over me and fell. Barely able to see, I crawled over to her and helped her up. We both stumbled forward trying to escape the cloud. After the cloud had somewhat dissipated, I sat down on the curb. I was in a state of shock and disbelief. I ultimately spit up the thick debris I had been inhaling. Nevertheless, I was a lucky one. I was still breathing. As I continued north through the streets of Manhattan, I would occasionally stop by somebody that parked their car and had the radio turned up so those around them could listen. I couldn't help but look at the people and realize that they were a cross section of New York... from banker to bicycle delivery boy... from black to white, and everything in between. Only at moments like these do these people all come together. Very sad... I finally made it back up to my apartment by foot at about 1:00pm. Soon after I took a shower to rid myself of debris. I couldn't help but notice small scraps of glass that had become lodged in my hair. Small pieces of the World Trade Center... washing down the drain... it was a day for that... I sat down in the shower? for the first time today, I cried... So now, at about 5:30pm, from the windows of my apartment on W43rd St, I can clearly see the smoke continue to bellow up from where the Trade Center stood just hours earlier. I'm sick to my stomach... With my 25+ years of working in lower Manhattan, I've made so many contacts and friends. The likelihood of knowing people who died today is all too great. Waking up tomorrow and beginning to learn their fates will be a horrible thing. I'll never forget this day. My heart is still pounding... Arrived a Pisa Bros. before 9am. Evrey one was in the bosses office and the second plane hit, we saw it live on TV. Goose bumps on my arms as I realized that my son Vincents office is right next door I ran and called his office , voice mail, I called my daughter in law, both Lawyers,she is on 45 ans Fifth new office, and I am not sure what building she is in. I called my daughter Jennifer, who was on the 73rd floor of the WTC on 26 Feb 1993, and escaped safely, and quit her job the next day. She horrified was watching the event on her TV at UBS in Stamford Ct. I tried to call Vincents cell but one number was missing. Jennifer said Mom get out that building, I'll call Vincent. I called my husband, who said the same thing and also said that those towers are going to fall, I said no no.Then left the 22nd floor of my building. Down stairs I saw the Fire Marshall of our building, and realized I left my cell phone up stairs and didn't know where my son was. I went back and my private line was ringing, luckily it was my daughter in law Morgan, histyrical, Vincent was down there and she could not get through on the cell. I left and ran down to 45th Street not even sure where her building was. The street were full of people panic and you could see the billows of smoke from the building. I found Morgan, who still was unable to reach Vincent and was bouncing of the wall. We were a lucky family as Morgan cell rang about 1050am and it was Vincent, who reached Chambers Street and saw a jet engine on the street and all the panic and he was lucky enough to get back in the subway and back to New Jersey.I thanked God that Vincent was alright. I needed to get home to be with my husband,even though Vincent and Morgan wanted me to come to NJ. So I walked across my New York (Born and raised here) and it looked like a bad Bruce Willis movie. There were our guys now in the sky in their fantom 16 jet, empty streets with ambulances and there syrions ringing. I finally made it to Grand Central Station and got on the second train to Stamford Ct. Stunned and blank and the same time. My husband hugged me when I got home.Then the tears came later that night,loud and clear. There is not a day that goes by that I dont think of that day, and I often think how all the people who lost loved ones cope every day. On September 10th, I came home from work about midnight. Normally, I would sleep till 11am ? 12 pm. But September 11th, 2001 was different. My wife is an early childhood teacher. Both my daughters attend the same school where my wife teaches. They got up early that Tuesday, and I was awake but stayed in bed. When they left I got up to work on some school work. It was about 8:50 am. I put on my television to the NY1 news channel. I saw a hole in one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I called my mom. ?Mom, what?s going on?? She told me a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. ?What?!? I told her to wake up the ?kid.? The ?kid? is my brother, who works nights just like me. In fact we are in the same line of work. You see, I was the training sergeant for the NYPD?s 32nd Precinct in Harlem, New York City, responsible for training 12 probationary police officers who recently graduated from the NYPD Police Academy. My brother was one of my trainees. We looked forward to this day, September 11th, 2001. We were going out tonight, his birthday. We were going to Remy?s Lounge, a club, blocks away from the World Trade Center. Anyway, I told her I will call her back. A little while later, I see a small object by the second tower of the World Trade Center. A plane. Then an explosion. The reporters reported that an explosion from one tower ignited the other tower. I said, out loud, ?No you idiots, another plane hit the other tower!? Minutes later they confirmed what I thought I saw. Another plane hit. We?re under attack. I called my wife?s job. Busy. My brother calls me. ?What?s going on?? I tell him, ?I don?t know, and, Happy Birthday?? I try to call my wife again, this time on her cell phone. No service. The first tower collapses. I walk into the 32nd Precinct. Chaos. I get 8 police officers assigned to me, one being my brother. I was posted by Harlem Hospital. I notice them to be oddly shaped. ?They?re our planes, our fighters!? It was a long night. I worked a month of 12 hour shifts with no days off. I went to the site. I saw body parts; I smelled the death in the air. I recovered and bagged body parts. There is one memory I will hold on to forever. My wife is not an intimate person. Doesn?t really hug or hold. I got home after that tragic day. I took a long hot shower and got into bed. I sat down. I was overwhelmed. My wife got up and held me. It felt as if she held me for days. I cried. Man, did I cry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I left at 6am to go to our Canadian dentist. Our trip up was uneventful. On the way back the Border Patrol was very intense and intrusive- a 180 degree turnaround. We blew it off as a "newbe" officer. We enjoy each others company so talked all the way back to Schroon Lake where we stopped for breakfast, about 10am. It was like walking into "The Twilight Zone". Everyone was in shock. My husband, a Vietnam vet, was in tears of disbelief. I haven't yet been able to have a good cry. It is just too overwhelming. I will remember this day for the rest of my life. We will never forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I lived in columbus ohio and I went to a christian school.I was in 4th grade. I remembered I was in class and I was bored. I asked my teacher to go to the office. I remembered seeing one of my teachers watching a tv. I have glasses and at that time I was not wearing them, so all I saw was two pillars and smoke coming out of it. I got everything and went back upstairs to my class. A couple minutes later another teacher came into my class. My school has sliding walls so we opened the wall and got both 4th grade classes in a group. My teacher at that time, Mrs. Lincoln, told us that the World Trade Centers had collasped. I thought that it was a muesem or somethin. When I got home that afternoon my mom was on the couch watching the news. Sure enough it was the WTC. They were on fire and smoking. We watched nothin but the news that night. I remember looking up into the sky thinking," Is that going to happen to us?" I was worried or scared, some might say, for the rest of the week. I would never forget that day no matter how hard I tryed to forget it.
