Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The ringing of the phone woke me up to what I knew had to be bad news, no one ever called us that early. My mother had called to tell me to turn on the TV because the US was under attack. I quickly woke up my husband & tuned in to the news. We both sat watching in utter disbelief. I kept thinking my mom had turned on some war movie and was confusing it with reality, like the radio broadcast by Orson Wells so many years ago. I kept waiting for the movie to end but it never did, this was real. We were speechless. I remember hot tears streaming down my face and thinking life here in the US will never be the same again. This action would change so many people's lives. I decided not to send my 8 year old daughter to school. Her school is non denominational facility but they lease the grounds next to a Jewish Temple and I feared there may be trouble there. As it turned out only about 10% of the students came to school that day so classes were cancelled. One year has passed since that very tragic day and it is as painful to remember now as it was then. I had just gotten out of the shower and my phone was ringing. I was in a hurry so I let the machine get it, then I heard my mother's voice. She told me to turn on my TV and pray. The worst thoughts went through my mind--so I thought. I turned on the TV to view a nightmare that was unimaginable. I sat in my living room and could not stop watching the news. The next few days that followed I could not stop thinking about the people who could not have their "normal" day. Everyone was so sad and somber, but one thing is for sure America citizens had not lost their patriotism. Everywhere I went American flags were flying proud and almost every marquee has something referring to "God Bless the USA." Everyone was donating money, blood, and there was prayer services going on 24/7. It warmed my heart that was broken for all the ones who lost their loved ones. I am so thankful that I, nor none of my loved ones were hurt directly, but I feel we all lost something that day. We lost heroes, and then some new ones emerged. "What do you mean?" I asked. He said he had heard that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center. It was still early in the morning, so the full scope of the disaster had yet to reach us. "An airplane, huh?" I said. "That's terrible, but it has no bearing on my life at all." All through that day I listened to radio reports from NYC and felt like a selfish fool for my earlier comment to my co-worker. Upon realizing the news was indeed fact, I immediately rushed to get back to my place of residence. Coming through the front door, I can hear Dan Rather's voice blaring over the tv and as I approach the tv in the dining room, I stand there, gazing. In total disbelief, I look at the tv and see both Towers ablazed and hearing the remorse in Rather's voice. As it dawns on me that America has been attacked, the screen flashes scenes from the Pentagon that was also hit. I stood in the middle of the dining room, motionless, as if I was caught up in a time warp. Bedazed by the acts of aggression displayed on America, I take notice of Rather's words when he says all U.S. boarders are closed and all aircraft grounded. Only after Rather speaks that this is indeed happening LIVE do I fully comprehend: terrorists have strucked America and hurt us deeply. My first thoughts thereafter was where was BUSH. I was angered when I saw his plane flying somewhere in the southern area of America. Instead of returning to D.C. to take charge, he appeared to save himself. Granted, he is the President of the United States but the Citizens of the United States need a word of comfort, forceful leadership in this dreadful time of crisis. My heart was heavy after 1 pm because there was no official word on who was responsible. For the next several days, the only phrase that came out of my mouth was BLOOD FOR BLOOD!! Vengence was all that I cared to hear and wanted Bush to speak on. On September 11th, I will never forget the pain I felt, that Americans at home and abroad felt, as it only stimulated a nation to forget about our foolish differences on agenda, race and inferiority and focus on our common enemy yet unknown. I no longer felt any discomfort towards Klansmen or Skinheads as the subhumans who slamed their planes into those Towers and the Pentagon are NOT human. No longer did I concern myself with the color of one's skin as the terrorists proved they didn't care who was in those Towers. Whoever was in those Towers was gonna be killed. The WORLD Trade Center was an economic hub for the WORLD's leading financial nations to partake in business, people from all different races and nationalities. To continue to be angry with my "fellow American" whether Indian, Chinese, Japanese, White, Black, Korean or WHOEVER was responsible for the deaths of those in the Trade Center and Pentagon, I wanted them to suffer the same fate, slow and painful. This was a cowardly act and my heart wanted swift reprecussions immediately. BLOOD FOR BLOOD. That was the only thing I felt would compensate for the pain. The Pentagon, being a military establishment, would have been sufficient as it is a MILITARY target. I would still have been angry because the Pentagon was struck but I would have understood. To go towards the Towers, that was clearly a personal issue entirely different. Honest, hard-working people died and will never know why. The people aboard those respective planes also will never FULLY know the reasons for their untimely demise. Let us not forget those people, OUR People, our fellow Americans who died prematurely on Setpember 11th, 2001. All I could do was sit down and watch. I couldn't believe what was happening. I had tests at school so I continued to get ready, which was very difficult because I kept stopping to listen. On my way to school all I could think is what is the next target? Are my children safe? Since I live near Dallas, I was concerned about attacks on the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the airport. When I arrived at school everyone was in the conference room watching it on a big screen and some were crying, some were angry and some were just numb. Needless to say my instructor said "We are not having school today, if you want to leave that is fine. All I know is that I am staying right here and not moving." I left and picked my children up from school, because it was thought that the schools may be a target in the area. I was not going to take a chance and more than that I wanted my children with me so that we could discuss what was happening and try to help them understand what was going on. I also wanted my children to know that we needed to take the time to pray over New York and our President for their safety and to just some how comfort them. I really felt helpless knowing that I was soo far away to physically be able to do anything, so I just prayed. For weeks the firefighters in the metroplex, as well as all over the country, were taking donations and I put in a donation at every one that I saw. I know it was not alot, but I wanted to know that I was doing something that would be helpful. On the one year mark, I really didn't think I would be as emotional as when it happened. Well, I was very wrong! I cried most of the way to work off and on listening to the phone calls being replayed and seeing the images just put me back in disbelief that it could have happened. I do have one thought and that is that I am soo very thankful that we live in a country that will not tolerate terroism and that we just do not allow the different groups to retaliate on our soil. I never understood how the countries could put up with frequent bombings by different groups and continue to kill innocent people. It seems that they should have some way of enforcing something to put a stop to it. They apparently are not hiding the fact of who they associate with, they will then take responsibility for it after the fact and I just do not understand how it can go on. All I know is that I am soo proud to be an American and I am soo thankful to God that I have the privilege to live in this great country where I can openly worship him and not fear for my life for being a Christian. This country needs God, and until we stop shutting him out of it, we unfortunately will still see heartache. We lived together in Westchester and took the MTA to Grand Central when we would visit the city. We survived the Millennium crisis in fine fashion. So on the birthday of my girlfriend in the spring of 2001, I planned a trip into NYC. We spent the day together exploring the marvelous beauty and wonder of Battery Park and The World Trade Center. We browsed the underground mall that rivaled any suburban monstrosity. Then, as evening approached, dressed in our finest clothes, to Windows on the World we went. Standing in the lobby, admiring the architectural achievement that were the Twin Towers, I just had to say in awe that, ?There is no way these towers will ever fall?. So up we went. As I viewed the Brooklyn Bridge from high above, I glanced to my right and was amazed at the sight of another building as impressive as the one I was in. We entered the restaurant and had the most memorable night ever. I proposed to my girlfriend, and she accepted. We were truly on top of the World. On the morning of the 11th, I put a suit on to head off once again on the Metro North to Grand Central. I had job interviews. You see, I just had to work in New York City. So off I went to take the scenic ride to the center of the World. My phone rang, I answered. It was my fianc?e. A plane just hit one of the Twin Towers. My thoughts immediately recall the B-25 incident at The Empire State Building and really thought nothing of it. Then, as I viewed the images on television, saw how serious it looked. As I watched the second plane hit live on national TV, I became numb. I slouched to the floor in disbelief. It quickly turned into denial, and my brain and body simply shut down. The Towers that I had grown to know and love...were gone. Friends, neighbors, police officers, firefighters, everyday people...were gone. I, as many of us, lost so much on that day. A year later, I finally came out of my state of shock. It turned to depression. My fianc?e and I broke up. I left to return to Chicago. I am receiving treatment and am trying to piece my life back together again. I will, but there will be a few big pieces missing. It has taken me this long to even string enough letters together to create a word in order to share this story. In my first hour I heard some stuff about it but I didn't think anything of it I thought they were talking about some movie. When I went to my second hour that's when it hit me thats when I was realized what really happened. Because my foods/nutrition teaher had the news on and when I walked into the room I just started to watch it. I Couldn't belive that, that would happin. I didn't think that it was true in till the live footage popped up on the screen. I was able to see the second plane crash into the trading center then when I saw that I was shocked. Then it was only 20 min or so later when you could actually see the building start to calaps all that debris every were. I thought that the camera man was going to get hit with parts of the building flying everywere he was so close to it trying to get good footage for us. And they did i was so dazed into the tv when the camra man slipped over somthing i thought i was acturlly there.But my class had ended so I had to go. When I got home I wached more of it. Living in las-vegas was really hard at this time I lived with my sister and her husben. In las-vegas that's all the work we have up there is cunstrution working and casino working at the strip. This was not a good time for vacation people to go on vacation but thats were people in vegas get all their money . Alot of people were getting laid off all my friends parents were getting laid off things were very poor for a while my sisters husben got laid off his work but we were very lucky he was able to get a job the very next day. When I walked to school I was able to see the strip the thought always passed my mind that they were going to take out the new york new york on the strip. I have never saw the lights off on the strip untill this happin the was the first time ever that the lights were turned off. It was my 4th hour of the day in 8th grade, and i went into that class just expecting another noisy day as always. Then him being the US History teacher and always having the tv on, he already knew what was happening. (Now at this point in life, i didn't know what the world trade centers were or what they were used for so i was just confused about what was going on.) When we started watching the second towers wasn't hit yet, it was right after the first one had gotten hit. When i asked my friends what the Trade Centers were, i was more confused about what was going on, like why somone would want to do this? Also, it wasn't until later i really know how many could've died and how many that did die. The whole class was silent while watching the news. (This was the only time i ever saw the whole class not talking, but just looking at one thing, the teacher never ever told them to stop talking eighter.) While we were watching the class saw a reporter standing inside the pentagon tlkaing to people about the tragedy and there was a loud and shaking Boom. They didn't know what it was, but they all still evacuated the building. Then somone taped a shot from outside of the pentagon and it showed it in flames. That day i wondered and still do, why would someone do this to our country. Why would lives be given to take more, there is no increase into what you are doing. They only thing what you have done is make our country stronger then you ever could've thought. I hope that nothing ever happens in this country like this ever again. I woke up at 4:30 a.m because I had to open up the healthclub that I worked at. I remember how beautiful the morning was. I got to work around 5:25 a.m, twenty minutes early, So I would have time to eat breakfast. When I finished my breakfast I turned all of the television's on. I put them on all of the news stations because the club is in the financial district in Boston. The majority of the members are business people who like to watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX News as well as the local news. They would always watch the news while they exercised so they would know what was going on in the world. Everything was normal until around 8:50 a.m when one of the stations that was on said that there was a fire at the World Trade Center. At first no one thought anything of it until they showed Tower 1 on fire with a huge whole in it's side. The anchor then said that either a missile or a plane hit the tower. When they said it was a plane everyone thought it was a terrible accident until we saw the other plane hit Tower 2 right before our eyes. Then we heard about the Pentagon being hit and seeing the video of it on fire. I will never forget the look on everyone's faces that were there. Everyone was just in shock. We could not believe what we were seeing. By that point no one was working out. Everyone was watching the T.V's. Everyone stood there watching until both towers were gone. It felt like an eternity standing there watching everything unfold. To this day I still think about what happened. It is still fresh in my mind how such a beautiful day turned into such a nightmare. One of the many things that I learned on September 11th is that life is to short to take things for granted. Live for today because you never know when you will be gone. Take the time to tell someone you care about that you love them. I am very proud of how this country came together after everything that happened. I have never been more proud to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I awoke early on this morning as I needed to Chair my first PTA meeting at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach. I was the incoming PTA President. We held meetings every second Tuesday of each month. I had stayed up late to type the agenda the night before September 10th and that morning my printer was down so I was busy battleing that minor annoyance. My 7 th Grader son Sam was busy getting himself together and I got the brilliant idea that we would sit down with candles and silence ( no TV or radio ) and eat breakfast together. Sam and I had no awareness that the world had gone mad around us. We sat and ate a peaceful breakfast and then we drove to the school and I remember feeling excited about my preparation for the upcoming meeting. Sam and I parted outside the office and I went in to use the copy machine only to be confronted by the secretary Erin, who looked stunned and scared, I remember I said," what has happened , is someone dead? " Erin looked at me and she was shocked at my response. She then said," you really don't know, a plane went into the WTC in New York." I was horrified, I said " Was it an accident ? " Just then the school counselor came in and said there had been another plane in the other WTC and something about the Pentagon, I knew then that it was Arab terrorists. I had been in Europe during the years of IRA terror car bombings, the bombings of restaurants and the hijackings of various airlines in the 1970's and the Pan Am bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland...It was a revisit with terrible implications...I was devastated and I did not know how to proceed...It was my first experience at Chairing any meeting...I will always remember this because I came from creating a peaceful morning ritual into the gates of hell within an eleven minute ride into the school office...My normal mornings are hectic and the TV News is always on and the radio in the car gets me information as I drive... I was both horrified and rendered powerless in the aftermath of that morning last year... I came to America in 1976 to escape Bader Meinhoff, Black September, Red Brigade, Ira and numerous other terrorist organisations...only to have it all begin again in the year 2001. I had lost my father in November 2000 and I was still grieving the loss not yet a year old.. My firstborn son Adam had just left for school the week before and he was out hiking in the wilderness. The school told his group about the hijackings but not all the details and he called me upon his return a few days later devastated by the reality that they had not yet faced. I drove up the next day to be with him as he was not only shocked but afraid about the prospect of war. He was and remains concerrned for his future and that of his generation... I am currently still on the PTA, not as President, and today was the one year anniversary of 911,it was also the first meeting of the year. I am now the school's Librarian. I had a lot of feelings about this day and rememberance and I would like to add that "man lives by faith and hope and love, by the star on the horizon and by the trumpet that will not call retreat."( E. Merrill Root ). We can go on and live lives that are meaningful and we can remember those who perished with love and appreciation for their lives and remember that we are here to celebrate whatever time we have and after we have left, our friends, family and sometimes strangers remember our names and our faces...We are all part of a vast universe that will not support the violence that we reserve for each other. I simply cannot express the pain that I feel knowing how helpless we are to prevent human suffering and the desire to make others responsible and to cause great harm and further suffering. I think that I was so sure both my sons would be born and raised in America far away from the ravishes of war and destruction. September 11 changed that dream forever ...it was a 25 year hiatus..I am grateful to be alive nevertheless..I am forever changed by my experience that morning.. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I entered Marlborough Middle School on Septermber 11th as if it were an ordinary day in 7th grade. I had no idea what had happened until the end of the school say. I went to soccer practise right after school, where my coach told my team that two planes had hit the World Trade Centers. I didn't think much of this since I was unaware of what the World Trade Centers were. I felt sympathy for all of the people who had died on the planes, but figured the crashes were just an accident. When my mom came to pick me up, she told me that something had happened in New York and that there was something I needed to see on TV when I got home. The first thing that came to my mind was whether or not my best friend, who lives in Far Rockaway, NY was alright. I was scared and confused at the same time. As soon as I got home, I turned on the TV and was in total shock. I couldn't believe what was happening. I never would have thought anything like this would happen in our country. My mind was racing with different thoughts and emotions. I couldn't believe anyone would do such a thing. And the innocent people who had died had families just like mine. I came to realize that life is never going to be perfect and not everyone will like each other in our society. Septemeber 11th has changed my life completely. I am so grateful to be living in a country that stands strong and never gives up hope. I've never felt so proud as I do now to be living in the United States, a place so beautiful and diverse that nothing can stand in its way. I think that the firefighters and people who have donated money and helped out the families and victims on September 11th should be remembered. Tell us your story: I sleep with my radio on, and that moring I was sleeping and then all of the sudden i woke up to them talking about the attack. So I immediatly turned on the TV and watched was happening to this country. I did not move from my room the whole day.The next day I did the same thing.It was horrible, I cried the whole day, called my mom becasue she works at OHare airport in Chicago. I have never cried as much in that week than I ever have before.The thing that bothers me the most about this tragedy is that the people who tell us not to go to war, that is not the answer.What is the answer. If we could sit down peacefully and talk to the certian group of people who committed these crimes then we would. But that is not possible, the only way we can communicate with them is by war and harm because that is how they were taught and raised. They don't care if they die, they want to die. You can't help people who don't want to be helped.You can't talk to people whos main purpose in life is to kill people because that will send them to a better place.I know that justice will be served and even though we cannot bring back the men, women, and innocent children that perished that day, I just want to tell everyone that the real heroes in America are those innocent people who died on the 11th and the people who are fighting and risking their lives for ours right now and ever since that horrible day. I heard a saying that I try to live by. you are born on a date and you die on a date but it is that dash in between those two dates that really matters. On the morning of 9.11.01, I was getting ready to go to a hair stylist's appointment. I turned on the radio for the news and the morning talk shows. It took a while for my brain to bend around the idea that we were under attack. I thought at first it was like _War of the Worlds_, fake. But then I turned on the tv and I saw. I made the appointment only to be with other people, we were really scared. We thought it was the end of the world. My son was in school, and my husband at work. I wanted to go down there (to Ground Zero) to help but I was currently under contract at a local hospital and my family needed me. Two weeks later I found out that the first airplane that hit the tower held my cousin Madeline Amy Sweeney, (we called her Amygirl and I knew her as Amy Todd), who was a stewardess and an American Heroine, (my Dad had never checked his email). My Uncle Bill, her Dad, is a distinguished veteran who never believed he would lose his daughter in the line of duty. After that, the tape of her conversation was physically painful. This event changed my worldview. It made me value freedom and liberty as never before and gave me an edge towards those who would take it for granted and dismiss it as secondary to their agenda and their lives. I have not been to Ground Zero yet, although it is really not too far away. When I see it on tv, I still cry. I am very proud of my fellow citizens, especially the people of New York City. They demonstrate the American Spirit at its best. President Bush has earned my respect and admiration as has former Mayor Rudy Guiliani, and Gov. Pataki. I was a junior in high school at the time, going to my second class. The time was around 10:15 and I noticed that the weather outside was particularly cloudy and gloomy. My next class was weight training, so I changed in the locker rooms into my gym uniform and headed over to the weight room. Once I entered the room I decided I would start my exercise session on the treadmill at the cardiovascular section, which had a television set where we could watch anything we wanted. I expected to see an ordinary movie when the T.V. turned on; however, the first thing I saw was not a movie but an emergency news report of a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. At that moment I knew something was wrong, but the news just did not quite sink in for me yet. Everyone else who was in the classroom was fixated on the coverage and had a look of shock on their faces. To me, it only felt like a scene from the movies, something that just doesn?t happen because I had never seen anything like this before in my life. Class ended soon after and I began heading to my next one. It seemed that I was one of the first people in my school to hear about the event, since while I was walking to my next class no one that I passed in the hallways seemed to have mentioned anything related to the news. Oddly enough I wondered why the school had not at least made a public announcement yet; I?m sure that by now a few of the school administrators must have already been contacted about the news. After my next class started an announcement finally came. Our principal told the entire school that the Twin Towers were hit by two airplanes, but not much else was known yet. He tried to reassure everyone not to panic or be stressed, and reminded that one of the safest places to be was in the school. Once the announcement was over there was a sudden air of agitation that formed, and my English teacher turned on the television to show the news report that was still similar to the one I had already seen. She then told turned it off and said, ?I know we are all very worried and concerned but the only thing we can do at this very moment is to go on with class.? It would appear that that was the way most teachers and people dealt with the situation that day. Nothing else could be done. School continued until we finally got dismissed that day. I remember school being cancelled the day after, and my parents did not have to go to work either. We ended up spending most of our day watching T.V., hungry for any kind of news update that was constantly being released. After I saw the clips of the Twin Towers crumbling and people who were screaming and desperately trying to evacuate, I finally fathomed what happened. A mass of innocent people who had done absolutely nothing wrong were killed, and many more had to put up with the loss of these loved ones. I had a sudden strike of guilt for taking so long to comprehend the tragedy, and feelings of resentment quickly developed for those responsible for such a horrific act. The worst feeling I had was not being able to do anything about the situation ? I felt helpless. It is now three years later and words like Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, and terrorism have never been the same since then. I realized that this is what it felt like to become a part of a history textbook, going through our own version of Pearl Harbor. Everyone I knew living in the United States before 9/11 was completely ignorant to these acts of terrorism that have been occurring around the world, especially those from my generation. Ever since we were born we have experienced nothing but peace, prosperity, and a sense of security; violence from another country was quite unfathomable especially since we thought we were an invincible country. Those are the words I most remember from that tragic day in September of 2001. I woke up that morning thinking it would just be a normal day: go to school, learn, come home, and sleep. But when I turned on the TV that morning, I found out I was wrong. I was the first one up in my house on 9/11, and turned on the TV, procastinating about getting ready for school. The channel that came up first thing had the news on. I immediately saw a huge tower, engrossed with smoke and fire. I didn't realize what I was watching until a couple minutes later when my mom came down and asked me what was going on. I remember thinking (but I'm not exatly sure if I said it), "I don't know. I think something crashed into the World Trade Center tower." Because she knew the significnce of the World Trade Center that I didn't, she automatically knew something was going on. I hesistantly got ready for school while watching the news until my ride arrived at my house. Right before I left my mom told me the Pentagon had been attacked as well. It wasn't something that could easily be out of mind for a while either; we watched TV and listened to the radio in every class of mine. I remember everyone being in a state of shock; we all just sat there, listening or watching, wondering what was going on, while the teachers busily watched and updated eachother on something they might not've seen. The most I remember from school that day was getting an uncountable amount of hugs and "I loves you's", out of the vulnerability we felt for being helpless. I got home that day and instantly turned on the news. I remember hearing that some of the planes were coming from Logan National Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. I automatically thought of my brother,Travis, who had recently moved there for college. I checked the messages on my answering machine and got one from my aunt, who also lived in Boston. I remember the tone in her voice when she told my mom and me, "Hey you guys, I just talked to Travis and he wanted me to tell you he's okay and everything's going fine. He wont be able to call you for a while because he's going to a couple of remembrances and discussions about it.That's about it. I hope you guys are okay. I love you so much and I'll talk to you soon." Whether you lived in New York and saw it in real life or had a friend or family member who was lost or injured in the destruction, or like me, your view of the world changed after the events, everyone was affected by September 11th. Title A name given to the resource September 11 Digital Archive Stories Description An account of the resource This collection is the bulk of the archive, representing the reactions and experiences of thousands of individuals beginning in 2002. 911DA Story 911DA Story: Story Tell us about what you did, saw, or heard on September 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I wasn't due at work until noon, so I stopped at Arby's for a sandwich first. While I was there, I heard people talking about missing planes. I thought it was strange, but didn't pay alot of attention to it. (I had not turned on the TV or radio while getting ready for work). When I got to work, my co-worker, Nancy, looked so serious as she told me that she had brought a radio to work. This also seemed strange, as our office has digital music piped in. I asked her if the digital wasn't working. She replied that she wanted to be able to get news so that we could keep up with what was happening. I asked her what was going on. She looked at me like I was from outer space. She told me that we were under attack. I asked her "under attack? Who is attacking us?" She replied that we didn't know. I said, "Then how do you know we are under attack?" She said that the World Trade Towers had both collapsed. I simply could not believe what she was saying. I kept saying, "That's impossible. They are massive, I've seen them in person. A plane could not have collapsed them. You have to be pulling my leg." Finally she got the news on the radio, and I heard my first report of the disasters. I was stunned. It could not be possible. Each patient that came in that day couldn't stop talking about it. We even had several cancellations due to the attacks. I felt a heightened sense of awareness, and a sense of being numb all at the same time. I remember the blue of the sky, and no planes flying overhead. We are only about 60 miles from Chicago, so we always see planes. But not that day. Finally about 4:30, one solitary plane flew over, I found out later that it was President Bush. When I got home that night, I was glued to the TV, seeing for the first time, the total devastation being played over and over. It took a couple of weeks of seeing those images daily to make it real for me. Part of me still does not quite believe that those massive towers are gone. I was impressed by the way our leaders and politicians pulled together, forgetting who was Republican and who was Democrat, forging a united front for our nation. President Bush and Mayor Guilliani deserve a very special place in the history of our nation for the unflinching way they handled the crisis. One good thing that has come out of all of this is a renewed sense of patriotism, a sense that we are the "United" States of America. Suddenly, being American means so much more than it used to. My heart swells with pride as I drive down streets and still, one year later, see countless flags flying, where 13 months ago, there were none. It is gratifying to see all of the flags on the cars and trucks, whether as bumper stickers, or as flags on antennas and windows. We are a mighty nation. We saw our nation pull together to help each other through this unbearable time. My heart aches for those who lost friends and loved ones that day. I cannot imagine the pain they feel. We all know that we will lose loved ones, and that we too, will die. But to die in such a tragic, senseless manner, is shockingly horrific. It is almost too much to comprehend. My family and I are fortunate, we did not lose anyone personal that day. We only experienced the loss that the whole nation felt, not the personal grief of the victims families. The people on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania are heros. They did not think of themselves, but instead, put the good of the nation ahead of their own survival. They chose the time and place that where the plane went down, greatly minimizing the loss of life to the people on the ground. How many more might have died that day if the terrorists had crashed the plane according to their plan? The police and firefighters and all emergency workers, who bravely kept going into the doomed buildings must never be forgotten. Their noble sacrifice saved thousands of lives. It takes a special kind of courage to run into a burning building. These brave men and women possessed that courage. In the midst of their overwhelming pain and grief, their families should be proud of them. They went above and beyond the call of duty. They are the true heroes of that day, and the weeks of search and rescue/recovery that followed. To the people of New York, and all the other cities and countries who responded with help during the crisis, ..... ......THANK-YOU!!!!! You have shown the world what true compassion is. You saw the need and stepped up and filled the need. May that spirit of community live on forever. May the old complacency never again show up. We are one people, what affects one segment of us, affects all of us. God Bless America!!!! I am proud to be an American. We have shown the world that we are made of the right stuff.
