I walked in and greeted my teacher, who was listening to the radio. She held up a finger as she cocked an ear to try to understand the announcer's voice through the heavy static. I was confused by her strange behavior, but I took my seat anyway. I retrieved my journal from my bookbag to write down some ideas for stories I had. When class began, the teacher went to the front of the classroom, where the chalkboard was. We (the class) became quiet, for we knew something was not right. Our teacher never used the chalkboard during Creative Writing. She said quietly, "A plane has crashed in the Empire State Building." We were a little concerned but we did not understand why all the fuss about it. (Since accidents are the day-to-day events of life.) However, she explained that this was not an accident; this was a terrorist attack. Some radicals had hijacked an airliner and drove it into the building. We were shocked to hear this. America was being attacked? This was the first time we have ever heard of someone attacking us. Then we heard a announcment from the PA that another plane has crashed into the Empire State building; Also that a plane has crashed into the Pentagon. when I heard this, I became terrified. My father works for the government and he often visits the Pentagon to do repairs. I asked the teacher if I could call home to see if my father was fine. I was lucky; my father was not at the Pentagon at the time the plane crashed. However, some of my classmates were not so forunate. It was not long after that I found out that we were being sent home early to be with our families. It scares me to think that it is this easy for the terrorists to be able to hurt us in such a manner. Now everything is much more secured, even the college I attend. I drive onto campus each morning and I see the campus police looking out for us. I watch the news and I see the progress our men over there in Iraq are making. I feel safe now, since we have these hard-working people keeping us safe. Thank you for all the hard work you do. Thank you for risking your lives for us. God bless America. All I got was dead signal. It was at this time that a coworker told me that a plane had hit the WTC. I thought perhaps it was Cesna, and said that someone wasn't paying attention. I went back to my lab and someone came and told me about the second plane. Again I thought that a small plane had hit the WTC and said what kind of people are getting liscences these days. It was not until I saw the TV in the lobby that I saw what was really going on. As I saw the carnage, it was soon that I found out about the Pentagon and Shanksville. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember that morning because the air was very still and there was no wind. It was very erie. I was off from work that day. I stopped over my parents house and turned on the TV. I saw the first tower after that plane had hit it. It looked like a small cesna hit the tower because I couldnt really judge the size and scale from my TV. Then all of a sudden, the second plane hit. My eyes were stuck open. I felt like someone had just hit me in the stomach with a sledgehammer. I myself am afraid to fly, so for me to see this was devistating. At that time , my father walked in the room. He looked liked his whole life was taken away from him. My father served in the Army, so he was positive it was terrorism. He also was shocked because he has cousins who worked in the Trade Center as Steam Pipe Fitters. He didnt know what to do. My father was also a Federal Agent for 26 years, my brother is a Detective and My sister is also a Fedral Agent. All I could imagine is that all those people being burned alive. I wanted to shout to the firemen and police "Dont go in there!!", but how would they hear me? The first tower than fell. I gaged and almost threw up. I started to get watery eyes. All those people being crushed to death, "oh my god", I thougt. "who could have done this?" About 15 minutes later, the second tower fell. I knew this was not an accident. I felt hatred for every non-american at that instant. I would probably have killed the first middle eastern person I saw if I did in fact see one. How could someone be so cowardly as to deprive that many people of life and freedom? I didnt see the Pentagon get hit yet, but then it just flashed onto the screen of my TV. I even thought of how the TV would feel if it knew it was diplaying this tragic event on its screen. I thought,"Were under attack". I got of the couch and got my gun from the hutch. I locked my doors and windows. I called my sister, brother and brother-in-law and asked them if they were staying home, they said yes. I felt a little better, but those poor people, their all dead. I couldnt even imagine what a death like that must feel like. I remeber saying to myself,"I hope someone got out alive". At that time, my aunt called saying that my dads cousins got out of the towers 10-20 seconds before they fell. The got banged up pretty good from all the debris, but their alive. I started crying. It was just to much for me to take. I threw up again, passed out on my couch and woke up about 1 hour later. I went back to my apartment and cried some more. My face was glued to my TV for about a week straight. When Pres. Bush declared war. I stood up and saluted him on TV. I was at that moment so proud to be an AMerican that if I had the chance, I would go over seas to avenge all my fellow americans murders. All of us should be happy we did not die that day. But, A little piece of all of us died and it will never ever come back. I vowed to my god and to my country that I will never slander any american again ever as long as I live and I will make sure that I salute every flag I walk by and love every breath of air I breath in this country. We are the most powerful country on earth. No one is stroger than us in patriotism, love and good will towards man. I wish I could shake George W. Bush's hand right now and tell him that if I was the last man in the USA, I would fight to my death protecting out country. Be proud to be an American. Dont hate people or anything because you feel a different way. Life is too precious and all of us deserve to live our lives to the fullest. This event has changed my life forever. I have become a better person and I love my country and god 1,000,000 times than before. If we stick together and be one nation under god, no attack will ever kill us. It started out with waking up at 5:30am to get into the shower and get ready for school. This was a big day for my field hockey team and I. It was one of our big games against Wilson. I live in Barker, New York so not much happens here, well history wise. As a normal home field hockey game day my team and I would wear our skirts for good luck. Around 7:00 am my boyfriend John came to pick me up to go get my best friend and her sister for school. They both were on my field hockey team so they were wearing the same skirt as me. Around 7:30 am we arrived at school. First period I have Global Studies. It was my favorite class so it didn?t drag on as much as the rest of my classes. I was taking notes on geography. Before I knew it, it was 8:40 time to leave for my second period. Jill, Miriam and I always met outside our classroom before we went to our second class. That day was an ?A? day so we had gym. I thought to myself, ?Great just what I need this morning!? When I got to gym nothing big was happening just the ?same old same old.? After gym was over I went to Art. Around 9:45 the phone rang and my teacher just sat there and began to cry when he turned on the Television to CNN. A building was in flames. I couldn?t figure out where it was so I just kept quiet and watched. I found out minutes later when CNN replayed two airplanes crashing into the building. I knew this wasn?t just an accident but someone had done this on purpose out of hatred. At the bottom of the screen I read the that the buildings that I was watching burn were the World Trade Center in New York City. I was scared because I knew my Uncle Patrick works near there and walks by that building almost everyday at that exact time. As the bell for 4th period rang I walked out sad and scared not knowing whether to think one of my family members had been hurt or what. When I got to John, my boyfriend, I just hugged him for a minute. I went to fourth period and the television was on again. While I had been walking from Art to English a plane had crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. All I could do was pray. After 4th period I went to Spanish. My Spanish teacher didn?t have the television on. I don?t think it was because she didn?t care. I think it was because she had lots to do. Spanish was a drag for me but seemed to go by fast today! In lunch no one at my table really said anything except lets just hope everyone was okay and none of our family members were involved. In the middle of lunch an announcement came over the PA system, ?All after school programs are cancelled. JV and Varsity Field Hockey games are cancelled until further notice due to the events in New York City today.? In a way I was mad that our game was cancelled but in other ways I was glad. The rest of the day was spent watching television. What I hadn?t found out until 9th period was that both buildings had collapsed and over 3000 people were believed dead. This event was bigger then Pearl Harbor. All I wanted to do was cry. As soon as the bell rang to leave and go home, I found John to get right home. When I arrived home my mom was on the phone trying to get a hold of my aunt to find out anything about my uncle. All circuits were busy so we couldn?t get through to New York City. We tried my aunt in California and even there we couldn?t get through. It was just amazing that this was actually happening. I was living history. My dad is in the Air Force so he got home early also. I asked my mom and him why someone would want to do this to us. I thought we were the country that everyone else loved. I was so upset that someone could take our planes and our people and use it against us in ways we have never experienced before. For the rest of the day I just watched the news to figure out more. At 9 o?clock pm President Bush made a speech to the nation. I watched that and gained some understanding of what we were going to do about this. For the next few days, it was just sitting and waiting to hear something from my uncle. It was amazing on how this event changed the United States overnight. I no longer felt safe here. I know that our security is stronger now but it seemed to me if someone can do this once they can do it again. No one at first knew who would do this to us. About a week later the FBI stated that Osama bin Laden was behind it. My family and I finally heard from my Uncle Patrick, he was okay and was home. He had lost many friends in the World Trade Center. My Aunt Catie lost some friends in the Pentagon. About 8 months later the troops over in Afghanistan still have not found bin Laden but will not stop fighting until they do. It worries me that this could still happen. Today, where the World Trade Centers once stood there is little of anything left. About 3,200 people died. Many firemen, police officers and EMS voluntaries risked their lives for so many others. Just how much people have helped with this, amazes me. I pray for all those who have lost their lives, who have lost family and friends. This has made America stronger as a nation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I, like so many others, first heard of the attacks on our nation within a few minutes after arriving at work. ATV was set up in our conference room to monitor the event thinking that perhaps this was just a small plane, off course for whatever reason, never thinking that anyone would deliberately fly a passenger plane into a building. We witnessed the second plane hitting the South Tower and were stunned. Although everyone in our division tried to go back and accomplish their assigned tasks for the day, no one was able to accomplish much. Then the news of the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania crash came through. We gathered as a division to watch the TV, each with thoughts of disbelief, wondering what possibly could happen next. Our division chief told everyone that if they did not feel comfortable staying at work (I work at a university medical school) we could leave. I distinctly remember stating, "If something else happens and it is in our area, we are going to need all the hands we can get, I'll stay". This was echoed by everyone in our division- willing to stay and help in whatever way we could. We left the TV on for the remainder of the day, people coming and going as they could to update themselves on the events. Although separated by hundreds of miles, reaching out with our thoughts and prayers to the communities affected seemed the least we could and should do. Later on, each one in the division helped as they could; blood drives, donations, etc. We have found this day has united us as a working family, helped us to reach out to the extended family of our community, and helped us become a part of a United States that will be forever changed-perhaps more united as a country than if this event had not happened. If we are truly a nation, "Under God" as we proclaim ourselves to be, may we return to God's leadership, submitting ourselves to His authority and leading our lives under His grace and mercy. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was waiting for my co-worker to begin opening our coffeeshop. I didn't have the key and was impatient for her arrival. I looked at the clock and saw that it was 8:45 AM. Little did I know that that particular minute was the last minute before every single American's life was changed forever. The story was slowly pieced together by customers coming in for their morning coffee. At first I thought it was an isolated incident; a small plane accidently crashed into one of the towers. Only after I learned of a plane hitting the Pentagon did I feel that queasiness in my stomach, and the thought hit me that America was under attack. My thoughts and prayers immediatly went to those who had been killed or injured, and to their families who may not have even known yet. I remember trying to call my mother at the school where she works. My mother and I have a strenuous relationship and as I considered how many people may have just lost a mother or father, my conscience led me to speak to her. This is the most important thing we can learn from the 9-11 tragedy. Love those around you and do not take them for granted. The old cliche holds true that you just never know when your last day is. It is a note that was published on the Washington Post web page the week following the tragedy. ------------------------------------------------------------ A friend, Gerald "Geep" Fisher was killed in the Pentagon attack. My 6-year-old son saw his father cry for the first time. My son is aware of the events and what has happened this week. He knows I am deeply saddened and have not been myself. This morning I found him playing with his Legos. He was building two towers and having them fall and break. He did this many times. I realize this is his way of dealing with the events. Tell us your story: New York is and always has been my favorite place on the planet, I have ( and still do) hope to live out there and evolve as a New Yorker. I will never forget what I saw on that day and watch as "my" city was being distroyed. I was gathering my things to leave for work when I looked at the morning news for the last time when I saw the first building covered in smoke. I had no idea of what was to come next. As I sat to listin for some detail so I could leave I saw a plane dive into the next tower. Confused and in shock I assumed that it had to be some kind of mistake on the part of the captin, he got distracted looking at the smoke and got to close. I would have never thought that it was done on purpose. As I listened and learned fear and sadness shook me to the core. All those people was all I could think about. To know you were going to die, and in such a way made me sink into the last thoughts of those people had on the plane. Straight fear was all I knew for them. The same fear that the families knew that they had. The people in the buildings had the same fear, with the chance of a few servivors to tell the tail. With hope and prayers that we all had watching we all knew that it would not be good. As the New York story got worse the nations military headquarters had been aimed for as well. Thankfully not as may lives were taken, but one was even to many. For the renigades that took control on flight 93 were the first americians to tell terriorist that we are fighters. Fear and strenght of those passingers sacrificed themselves for an unknown amount for people who would have been killed. To all the firemen/women,law inforcement, medical, religous, and other people who gave their lives to try and help can never be replaced or forgotten for the ultimate gift that thay gave. For the servivors and the families of the ones who did not make it home that day, mine along with everyone else who saw that horrific act of cowardace will always be in our thoughts every year for the rest of our lives, a memory that can never be faded or altered in our minds and in our hearts. Wake up, take our two sons to school, retun home to get ready for my day. Try to be out the door asap. I had just gotten into my Jeep and headed toward downtown South Bend. I turned up the radio and thought that I had tuned into some modern day version of War of the Worlds. I was so sure that what I was hearing was some sort of joke, or a recording of some type of a play. I remember feeling instantly sick, as the realization of what I was hearing was slowly sinking in. I had such an overwhelming desire to go back and get my children out of school and keep them close to me. I mindlessly drove in the direction that I was headed, completely forgeting about the demands of my day. Then I thought "This is not a large Metropolitan City, We are safe here." Then it hit me like a slap in the face! One of my close friend's youngest son lives and works in New York City, close to the Twin Towers. The twist was that her son had recently sustained a severe leg injury, was on cruches, and had just that week returned to work. I knew that my friend was at home alone and I was afraid that she would have to go through all of this alone, until her husband could get home from work. I drove straight to her house and hurried in through the back door. She took one look at me, held her arms out, said my name, hugged me and began to cry. We remained glued to the television for what felt like days. My friend and her family were one of the lucky ones. Her son managed to meet up with his fiance' a few hours after the first attack. She managed to help him struggle along on his cruches, toward Central Park. Ironically that is where the first met. They could only go a coulpe of blocks and he could not go on. A man on a rickshaw type bicycle had offered his assistance. That man peddled both of them the rest of the way into Central Park. The gentleman refused to take any money for his efforts. This story has a happy ending. If only it were that easy. A few key strokes on my keyboard, and everyone had escaped the disaster. We could take it all back, make it just a bad dream. The helplessness that is still felt by so many people. We all know that life must go on!! It's all very different now. Our son will be 18 years old in October. I know that it's on his mind that on his birthday he will be registering for the draft. The meaning of that was all very different a little over a year ago. I did not know anybody involved. Yet, something this tragic can scar a person for life as it has to me. I woke up around 7:30 to go to my 9 am music class. Turning on the television didn't even cross my mind. I was in my "early morning get ready" mode. I made it to class ontime for some reason and sat oblivious to the world listen to my teacher rattle on about major scales. After class, I realized that I didn't have the workbook in which my assignment for the next day was due. After class, I took my time getting to the bookstore not realizing that no body was outside passing classes. I reached the student center and noticed a group of people standing around a television set. Completely normal right? I bought my $90 book and went back to my dorm...and all hell broke loose. It was around 10:00 that I became aware of the destruction taking place less than an hour away from where I was. First instinct, call mom. Why the hell my cell phone wasn't working was beyond me so I tripped back to the student center to use the payphone. She didn't have to work that day and was home yet, what she said to me on the phone hadn't even crossed my mind. "Meghan is in the city. She took the 7:15 train for class." My best friend in the whole world was in the city! I know her school, and the train station were nowhere's near the trade center yet, her being in the city on 9-11 was not the best of situations. I hung up the phone. What else was there to say? I wanted to watch what was happening so I went to the even larger group of students around the T.V. and watched. And I couldn't help but cry. I never cryed and screamed that much. If I lost Megs, I would be devastated! At that point, one of the most beautiful things that has ever happened in my life happened. I was hugged. I don't know by whom or how I had gotten outside, but another student was hugging me and telling me that everything was going to be alright. And then she was gone. Megs is alright. She couldn't get through on her cell phone for five hours and ran 33 blocks to the train station when she heard they were letting trains out of the city. I'm sorry to say that we laugh about that. Picturing Megs run 33 blocks is as funny as picturing Megs run a yard. But if we don't laugh, we cry. And supressing something is alot easier than letting it live. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't stand tall towards our flag. And anytime I hear a siren or a plane, I look for it and see where it is going. It's stressful. But then I think of how lucky I am just to recieve that hug. To whoever you are, you have touched my life. You are truely an angel and will never be forgotten. To everyone who has lost someone, my prayers are still with you. It's hard to believe it has been a year. How fast it has gone by!!! Tell us your story: It was about 15 mins to 9 AM when I had just stepped out of my Intro to Religion class, which ironically had just finished discussing the Islam Religion. As i proceeded to walk across campus to my next class, a bunch of friends of mine called out my name and told me that the WTC had just been bombed and i was like, "You guys are crazy, you just dont play around about shit like that" they said we're serious and to go check it out myself in the library because they had a TV set-up. As i entered the library and went upstairs to find the TV set, i will never forget the sight i saw, 2 little nuns praying the rosary and about 5 faculty members huddled around this small tv set and as i aimlessly stared at the screen the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower. I couldnt believe what i had just seen. I was overcome by a sense of helplessness that i had never felt before or since then. As they replayed the scene over and over again, all i could think of was that this MUST be a scene from a movie, that something like this could never happen in the US, that these types of things happen in Kosovo, Israel, etc but not here in my own backyard. I then began to think about my sister who worked in the city and i was worried that the attacks werent near finished. At this point, we were in war for all i knew. Cell phones weren't working and i had trouble getting in contact with her and the rest of my family. At the end of the day we were all united in my house glued to the TV for the next next few days. I remember sitting in my Political Science class and someone said that a plane had hit the WTC. I can remember saying "Oh I am sure that it's not a big plane." I am a American History major. I was thinking about the Empire State building plane crash in 1945. My teacher didn't seem to care about what was going on but when class was over he turned on the tv. It was at that moment I saw the North Tower collapsing. I was just standing there stunned. My jaw just fell to the floor and I started to sob. It took me a while to collect myself and I drove home from the college. Normally 321 highway going North is not very bad from Dallas to Lincolnton is a 20 minute drive. It took me an hour and a half to get into town. My drive home was at most the scariest time of my life. I had no idea what was going on if my family was safe or what. I remember listening to the radio and crying and repeating " God help the innocent people " Those words coming from me all the way home. My mother was a work and she too had a radio playing she was visible upset. She had me go and get my sister. I got my sister who was ten at the time and she was so upset that she kept asking my why this happen. I was eighteen and I felt completely helpless. To this day I still cry. My heart is with all of them and I do have family serving in the military. The only thing I hate about all this is that I will have to teach this to my students one day. Being young you never think that anything like Pearl Harbor could happen to you. Well my generation lost its security and became realistic to the world around us, a little over three months after graduation the real world had hit us hard. It has been a little over a month and something deep down said it was time to go. This has been the longest stretch of time since my last visit to the city. It has nothing to do with being afraid of some new attack or the fact that Tom Brokaw was within arm's length of touching anthrax. I just didn't want to wake up from this nightmare and find out it actually was real. Until now. Since the Holland Tunnel was still closed, our only routes were the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel. Since we were in no hurry and autumn foliage is in full bloom, I headed toward the Bridge. Then, at the last minute I chickened out, veering onto the Route 46 exit toward the tunnel. I've seen that view down Manhattan from the Bridge countless times on our way to Yankee Stadium. And I always made it a point to check it out, not to take it for granted. The Empire State Building, then the Twin Towers. That's the way it's supposed to be. Just postponing the nightmare, I guess. Heading out of the tunnel, we first decided on some lunch at one of our favorite Irish haunts, McCormack's. After some grub, a couple of pints and some rugby on TV, we headed downtown. I decided to park the car in the South Street Seaport area and then hoof it across town toward the Trade Center. On the way down, a golf cart pulled in front of us from a cross road. There are many golf carts moving around the city with sides built up with plywood. These are used to transport supplies and people from one location to another. On the back of this cart were 3 workers holding their hardhats with a blinding stare into space. They must have been up for 24 hours or more. Scenes from CNN crossed my mind. For a moment I thought of taking a picture, but just didn't feel it was right. Aligning the streets are tables of bottled water, bananas and various food stuffs. Trucks housing electrical equipment used to power large mercury lamps resembling a motion picture scene are dotted along the area. The sight of military personnel in fatigues along Canal Street takes a moment to get used to. While most people may look at 18-25 year olds as adults, i saw our boys faces in theirs. Peg later conveyed to me how she smiled at the one "kid" in uniform who looked horrified - he looked like he needed a motherly hug to make the pain go away. He smiled and nodded his head in acknowledgement. Hug accepted. The presence of New York State Police in Manhattan is another first for me. The closer you work your way downtown, the more it resembles a war zone. This is serious stuff. After parking the car, I decided our best route would be along Wall St. toward the financial center. As we got closer to Ground Zero, things began to change. On a clear day, the roads were becoming wet from the constant flow of water trucks hosing things down. Packs of people with cameras were more common than usual. Since I know the city like the back of my hand, we quickly avoided the mass and took a roundabout method. We headed north along a road heading into the zone. At this point, let me say that words cannot describe what we felt standing 2 blocks from Ground Zero. All of the pictures from television, magazines and newspapers don't even come close to expose the enormity of what was around us. Cars frozen in time, papers still spewed on hanging nets on fire escapes, grayish dust that may never go away. And yes, there is an indescribable smell of burning plastic, steel, carpet, fuel and things I would rather not mention. At the barricade were 2 military personnel and 2 of NYC's finest. Anytime there is a group of 100 or so people together in the city, you can usually expect an enormous amount of chatter. Not at this moment. Silence. People just staring down the block. The occasional sound of "No pictures please". I walked to the other side of the road and noticed my wife standing there with her hand over her mouth just shaking her head. This is serious stuff. Everything has changed. There has to be a chemical change within the body that occurs at that moment. For all 100 or so of us. The sight of that cathedral-like facade that is still standing just blows your mind of the energy that was created and destroyed on that day. Along this road, tractor trailer flat beds were making their way out of the city. Along the 2 blocks, firemen were lined up on both sides of the street with hoses watering down the truck and its scrap. Each truck was carrying one gigantic, twisted I-beam. The damn thing was still smoldering as it passed us by. For the rest of the afternoon, we wandered around the area heading north, moving into every crossroad to catch a different view of where the Towers used to be. Hundred-year-old churches are now converted into areas where firemen, policemen, ironworkers, etc can grab a wink or a coffee. Flags, banners, pictures of the missing are everywhere. And of course the scumbags selling pictures of the Towers, fake NYFD caps and the like around every corner. Hey, it's still New York, what can I say. Heading back home that late afternoon, I realized just how much I've taken that city and its people for granted. I don't know how many times I've said I'll never go there again. But, today I realized that New York City is the greatest city on the planet. That's why those towers were there. That's why those people were there. That's why I'm going back there. I know the media has purposely kept the scenes of those planes hitting the towers off of the television. But, I think all Americans need to see them once a week as a reminder, as justification of what we're doing now and in the future to put these bastards down. Everyone there was crying and talking about New York instead of all the new plans the company had. We decided to send cards and letters to the Police and Fire Departments in New York as a sign of our support for their heroic actions. Our companies New York subsidiary was on the 70th floor of tower # 1. We were all concerned that everyone of them was dead. At the end of the employee meeting we all prayed together, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Agnostic, Pagan. At that point in time all of us were just humans struggling to understand exactly what had happened. I went home to be with my kids and let them know that even though the world had changed that things were going to be O.K. I spent the rest of the day with them. We turned on the T.V. and like so many Americans that day, watched in horror as the events unfolded changed our feelings from terror to anger and for me my thoughts of my children and how they will never again experience the freedom we had taken for granted. Because now it has changed forever. Our attentions then turned to several people in our department that had left Logan that morning on a flight to Las Vegas. We knew that there were several planes left in the air and we had no way of knowing if there plane was one that was highjacked. We frantically tried to contact the airlines for the families that were still in the air. A feeling of helplessness overwhelming all of us. Thanksfully, all of our collegues were safe. A year later, it still feels like we had just heard the news and I can only imagine what the families of the victims are going through on this day. As I browsed one of the many websites on this tragedy, I crossed one that showed photo's of the victims of Flight 11 that left from Logan airport. I was shocked to see the photo of Lisa (Fenn) Gordenstein from TJX. I first met Lisa when I worked at Hit or Miss where she was a Merchandise Director. I was unaware until this morning that she was on that flight. I knew her as Lisa Fenn and was not aware of her married name. Lisa has a heart of gold. She took me under her wings at Hit or Miss and guided me through my career. I left Hit or Miss to become a buyer in another company. I will never forget her generousity or contageous smile. I am forever grateful to her. You never know when and how you will touch someone's life. Be good to everyone, as we all have experienced first hand, hatred is no way to live life. The bell rang to release students from their second hour classes and in the halls I heard talk of "World War III." I didn't know what to think or who to believe so I went to find my best friend to see if she had heard anything about it. She was just as surprised as I was, if not more. We went to third hour to find the television on CNN. Walking down the halls, I noticed that in every classroom, the television was on and the class was all watching in shock. Classes did not take place--instead, we all watched the news in silence just thinking about how such a thing could happen in our world. Still thinking we were bombed, I watched in awe as the second plane hit the world trade center. As we questioned our teacher, he explained it was a terrorist attack and they had also hit the Pentagon. When that class was over, I did not want to leave--instead, I wanted to watch the TV and see if anything else had happened. School was just not the same--the halls were dead silent and everywhere you turned, you'd see people crying and hugging their friends. I prayed that everyone was okay--especially my family and friends in the New York area. September 11th has changed life as we know it all over the world. It has touched all of our lives and saddened them, but through it, I think our country has really grown together. People have become more understanding of others and we now appreciate our lives more than we did before this horrible event. September 11th is something I will never forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At the time I was a Senior at High School. I was in my 2nd period Economics class, when we were told to turn on our TV's. As we watched all I saw was the first tower in flames. I thought it was an accident. But moments later from the side the second plane crashed into the other tower. Thats when I knew it was an attack. I was in tears. I was so scared. (I live in Rochester,NY). More then half the parents came to take there children out of school for the day, and many didnt return for days late because of fear of an attack..........Now 1 year later I stand as a Freshman in college. I watch and listen to storys. Im deeply sad for all who lost a loved one, or had to under go that experiance...................September 11, 2001 - Forever, you will never be forgotton. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work and was stuck in traffic - cursing the car in front for not going at the required speed. The red light came on - decided to turn the radio on - it was 8.52 am. There was some news about a fire in the world trade center. I was scared - My husband works in the world trade center and I wanted to reach work as fast as I could to call him. Reached work at 9.00 - my phone was ringing - it was my friend and she sounded worried - she asked me if I had talked to Mahesh. I was scared - I asked her what happened - she said a plane crashed into the world trade center. I told her I am going to call him and kept the phone down. Called again and again - those few minutes just dragged for eternity - till I got him on the 4th try. I was relieved to hear him - he said he was walking to the ferry as his train was stopped at Jersey city. The cell phone was getting cut - he said he will call back. I was relieved - went to the cafeteria to watch the news - Found a lot of people crowded - was watching the TV - people were talking about an accident - and right then another plane hit the building - I was horrified. Couldn't beleive my eyes and then the news about the pentagon being hit. it felt so unreal - as if I was watching a movie - This can't happen in real life. I then remembered my Brother in law - he works on Wall street and walks from the World Trade center. I rushed back to call my husband - he said - he saw the second plane crash into the building with his own eyes - he was on the jersey waterfront. He was shaken too - I asked him about his brother - he said the last time he called his brother - he was in the basement of WTC. He said would go to his friend's place who lives in Jersey City. I now called my Brother in law's wife. She said she has had no word from him yet. I was sitting there looking up all the news sites - when my friend called again - she was crying this time - One of the towers had collapsed. I couldn't control my emotions - I was crying loudly - we had so many friends and realtives who worked there. I packed my bags and ran out of my office. I was crying through out till I reached my Brother in law's house. I had to be with family - my sister in law was more composed than I was. We kept calling everyone - no word yet about her husband, in the meantime - we called our friends - trying to account for each and everyone of them. My sister called and we cried together - out of relief that my husband was safe - out of concern for his brother and for all our friends. Crying was the only thing that we could do - everything felt out of control. Finally we got a static filled call from my brother in law - He was in the basement when the first plane hit - they were asked to evacuate and he was walking on the Brooklyn bridge when the two towers collapsed. My sister came to their house too - She was preganant, her husband was in Atlanta - he was driving with his colleague to a meeting when the cousin of his colleague called him - He was on the building and knew that it would collapse any moment - It was his last call and he called to ask him to look after his family. It was horrible to think of that moment. She kept saying "Why am I bringing my baby into this horrible world?" We had accounted for all our friends by now - except one - Ravi. He worked at lehman brothers. His wife was scared - she was insisting that she will go to the site to search for him. We talked to her and tried to calm her. Some of our friends went to her house for moral support. I went to pick up my kids from school - My older one was in second grade - I told him about the WTC collapse and the first thing that came out of his mouth was - "Is my father dead?". I was taken aback - I said no - he is safe and so is your uncle. He was back being a kid again. (His world was still safe) My husband called - he was coming back in the train - I went and picked him up. a couple of hours later - my brother - in law also came home - we decided to go to the temple - to pray for all those who lost their lives and thank god for all those who were saved. Later that night - we got the message that our friend was safe - but it was not good news for his family - his cousin was on the ill fated flight from Boston which hit the WTC. Everytime I think of that day - I feel it was a miracle to my family - My husband who is always particular about leaving on time - was delayed that day - the kids took too long to get ready and he missed his regular train. My Brother in law was in the basement - he could have been anywhere. Our friends either didn't reach on time or were reporting sick on that day. One of our friends who worked for fujitsu worked on the floor that was hit by the one of the planes - He lost his entire team - miraculously he didn't go to work that day - he was sick. One of my cousins saw a body fall in front of her as she was walking under the WTC- she ran to her office - across the towers and fainted in the lobby. She made it back home but had nightmares for a long time. My kid's art teacher's husband owned the restaurant in the WTC. On that day - his wife insisted that he take their kid to the doctor's appt, and he obliged. So many lives - so many deaths and so many miracles. Today - when I heard about the sudden wind which picked up as the names of the victims were being read - I felt - yes there was definitely some unknown force - some one had to be looking after all of us. Some dimension where the souls of the departed reside. My deepest heart felt homage to the brave who sacrificed their lives to save others. If not for them - there would have been thousands more dead. And thanks to the almighty above - maybe those who lived had more to give to the world .......
