Tell us your story: the first news i heard was thata plane lost control and hit the north tower.they thought it may have been a highjacking. i then learned after it was.when it hit the second tower.this lady jerri i work with she was upset. she wanted to make sure her sister was ok. i later found out she was.this other lady i work with,then called the stations that had live reports being this shown on tv we could not see it.i then heard her say the first tower collapsed and many people were trapped calling from their cell phonesand then few minutes later the second tower collapsed. i needed to calm down feelings were going through me of deep concern, i was so bad they were going to send me home.i then called my mom and told her the news.by then i felt better.but my prayers were with those people.by then the american flag had meant so much more then stars and stripes.it upheld it's true meaning that day. 9/11/01 will live on and the lesson from it will never fade.god bless america! I DON'T REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT I HAD BEEN WATCHING ON TV BUT MY PHONE STARTED RINGING AND IT WAS MY HUSBAND TELLING ME TO TURN THE TV TO THE NEWS THAT A PLANE HAD JUST CRASHED INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER!! I HURRIED TO TURN TO THE NEWS AND THEY WERE BROADCASTING THAT A PLANE HAD CRASHED BUT AT THE PRESENT TIME THEY THOUGHT IT TO BE JUST AN ACCIDENT. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am 6th generation from the NYC area. I lived in Staten Island for 36 years. I spent much time downtown as a child. I remember the towers being built; people we knew worked on them. One foreman snuck us while they were under construction. I worked in #7 for a while. I worked downtown for 17 years. I had my first cup of coffee in my cousin's office in WTC #2. When Chase and Chemical merged we had huge parties in the plaza by the sphere. Thousands of people. It was incredible. And of course you always took out of town visitors to Windows on the World. On 9/11/01 I was making some deliveries before going to my job. I heard the first report on the radio. I went home and saw what was going on on TV. I started to cry. Stunned, I still went to work. People were in conference rooms watching the TVs. People were asking me what certain terms, buildings and other NYC details were. It was strange and horrible to see all that was familiar to me coming down or covered in smoke. Within 72 hours I heard from all of my friends and former co workers in NYC including one fireman who was early to the scene. And also from a friend in the reserves who had been called up. Their stories were horrible. Some e mailed pictures. I cried and cried. Luckily all of my friends were ok. I was sure I was going to lose someone that day but I didn't. I went back in April 2002. I met up with friends who told even more horrific stories than before. I was walking up Wall Street to Broadway and when I turned onto Broadway I was overwhelmed by their abscence. Not seeing what I knew I would not see was unbearable. I just started crying. It was harding turning that corner than it was being on the platform. More shocking. I took a picture of the sphere in battery park. I have it in my office. Such a reminder in such a pretty little park. The flowering trees are blooming in the background. The sphere near which, formerly my co workers and I celebrated. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: A co-worker and I were on our way to Madison,Wisconsin from Milwaukee to attend a meeting for work. It usually takes an hour and half to get to Madison. So my co-worker and I were talking for most of the ride. As we turn to take the main throughfare to get to the capitol we turned on our favorite radio station. As we were listening to the morning disk jockeys talking with their sports person he stated "Oh my god a plane hit the world trade center". At first our reaction was in disbelief and we thought they were joking. Then the disk jockeys apparently had witnessed it on t.v. and confirmed what the sports man had said. So I instantly picked up my cell phone and called my husband who was at work and he confirmed the story also. When we reached our final destination for the meeting, we went straight to the cafetiria and witnessed the first tower being hit. I was instantly paralyzed. Then fear set in. My 3 children were in school back home in West Milwaukee and I am 70miles away from them. We then proceeded to our meeting room and sat down. The president of our company sat down next to us and told us that the second trade tower was hit and that there were planes headed for Washinton D.C. She also stated that if we wished to return home we could do so. We called all our managers and put them on alert to watch for job sites closing and that our clients may be coming home. Then as we left the building the state capitol was shutting down. Even more fear was setting in and the reality of the United States being under attack was for real. On our ride home our ears were glued to radio just listening to the horror taking place. Mid way home I contacted the school and asked if they were releasing the children home. They did not. When I returned home my co-worker and I starred at the t.v. for hours. Then my husband and children returned. We cried, yelled and prayed. We did everything our president asked. We were so exhausted as if we just found out our loved ones had just passed. Time did not seem to end. For weeks I and my family mourned for all the loss. My 7year old son informed me that he was going to join the air force. He was going to shoot the bad planes. Our hearts and souls mourned that day. Every emotion a person could feel I felt that day. Tell us your story: I was driving my son to a doctor's appointment, listening to the radio, and trying to figure out exactly what was going on in New York when the news of the attack on the Pentagon broke. I knew we were at war, something I don't think people my age had ever felt. Sure, some of us sent brothers to Vietnam, and we went off to elementary school listening to reports of carnage in a faraway land, but we'd not been at war as our parents were. I know I'd never felt apprehensive about the safety of myself, my family, or my nation in the way I did that morning. By the time I got home my husband, who'd been working in a federal building near DC was home. I didn't know how worried I'd been until I realized how relieved I was to see him. We watched the news in disbelief. The only real memory I have of the news coverage, other than the crashes and collapses which seemed to be rerun every few minutes, is of a young black man in camo who stood before a makeshift memorial with a flag draped around his shoulders. He was crying and saying over and over.."Send me Lord, send me, please send me". On a day when heroes had died in quantity, he was willing to step up and be next. My husband was waiting for his brother to come to our house so they could go to Cleveland for the day. My two children ( then 1 and 3)were watching the disney channel. My brother in law came running in to our house asking if we saw it. It!!! What was it? " A plane hit the trade tower in Ny". He has to be mistaken. Why would a plane hit the towers. We turned on the T.V to see it. I had been to New York City 8 times and had taken Video from the Trade Towers I thought how stupid for a plane to not see the towers. Then as we were watching we saw on T.V a plane hitting the tower. How could this be I thought. Was this planned since they already had video of the plane hitting the tower. Then it hit not only me but everyone in the room the other tower was what just got hit. Again, how could this be. Why was the airport directing planes into the Trade Towers. Never thinking that we were under attack. For the remaing time that the towers were standing we were glued. Then the pentagon. Then we got the call that a plane went down in Somerset Pa. What is going on. As the towers crumbled to the ground I cried. Did everyone get out? As reports were coming in and watching the aftermath a cold numb feeling took over all of us in my house. This doesn't happen here not in the USA. Maybe over seas but not here. How could this of happened. I remember holding my children and my husband and not wanting to let go. Everytime they played a part of the planes hitting or the towers falling I wept harder. Thinking of how it was a beautiful morning the blue skies the comfortable temperature. And then that happened. Those people on the planes the towers the pentagon the last thing they may of seen was the beautiful New york City Sky Line, or the busy streets of D.C or the rolling hills of fall trees in somerset. These people when they woke up on the 11th didn't know this was the last moring for them. Last time they would kiss a loved one, send their child or children off to school or respond to their last call. To this day when I think of that I get a not in my stomach. The night of the 11th when I finally could go to bed. I sat and watched my children sleep for hours. Thinking "How in a matter of minutes the safe world I thought we had for them was no more." Early on the 12 my husband and I were awoke from the sound of low flying fighter planes going over our house. I was 29 years old and I never felt unsafe in america till I heard those sounds. It felt as though my freedom was gone and we were the captive. As the days months and years have past the anger and disblief are still there but not as strong as before. Wounds have mended the best they can only time and mend the memories. God bless all who parished in the 9/11 attacks and their families that were left behind. By the time i got to work, it was pretty chaotic. All of my co-workers had their radios on and were checking the web for more information. I was just numb that day and for a week just cried for us all. Then, when they were asking for help in any for possible my partner and i figured we had to do something. I couldn't think of anything for a few days. Then it hit me, we started a drive for supplies for the rescue dogs at our workplace. We collected bowls, eyewash, booties for the dogs feet, brushes, treats, and ended up sending three boxes of supplies weighing in at about 75lbs total. the delivery service waived the shipping fee and sent them all at no cost. I remember my teacher getting a call and leaving the room. A little while later she came back in and she was cry. Everyone was asking what was wrong and she told us that her husbands friend was in one of the WTC. She didn't exactly tell us that they had been hit by a plane. My teahcer had left again and came back in and said that we were going to the Science room. As we walked in people were watching t.v. I sat down and just looked at the t.v. and was very shocked. I couldn't believe what has happening. We stayed in the Science room for a while. Then as we went to every other class we just sat and watched t.v. A lot of the kids in my school where crying because there family members had been in the towers. Some of the kids had family members die. I remember the pricipal come on the anouncements and say that all after school activities had been cancled. For the rest fo the day I watched t.v. and thought how could they do this to us. The next day at school when the morning anouncments came on everyone had a moment of silence to remember what had happened. The principle talked for a while about what had happened and if anyone need someone to talk to there would be people to talk to about what had happened. The next few days after it had happened my school had a blood drive and I remember all the younger kids trying to give blood and I wanted too but we were not allowed. Everyday for a while after September 11th we had a day that we wore something in memory of September 11th and every where we went around where I lived you could see flags around on people's houses. A few miles away from where I live they built a big pole and put a big flag up to remember September 11th. On one of our school walls kids painted firefighters picking up a flag. As a matter of fact the day of the attack I was planning on going to NewYork but I was sick with the flu. I was woken up by my step mother crying out "Oh my God, Oh my God. Of course I jumped out of bed to see what had happend. I thought she had fallen and couldn't get up. She is an elderly woman full of life and spunk. We watched together on T.V. the second tower was hit and we watched the building crash to the ground then the T.V.went blank. We decided to pray. Then the phone rang off the wall my family in Illinois called to make sure I was o.k. and safe, they knew I was planning on being in NewYork. A couple weeks later I went to ground Zeroe as close as I could get and it was the most horrible thing I had ever seen in my 42yrs. I took on a diferent perspective after that. I charish my family and appreciate them more than I had ever done before. I thanked God for my life and my families life. I got to meet some of the fire fighters out there who did survive the attack and I signed an memorial book at the fire department and my heart just hurt for all the families that lost a loved one and some lost more than that. It will be a day I will never forget,not what I was doing at the time or where I was at that moment of hell. I know God kept me where I was for a reason and for that I am greatful. I work for the Norfolk Southern Railroad, then as a train conductor. I had been out the night before so the hour drive from my home in Cleveland, Oh to the train yard in Bellevue was longer than usual. Well at around a quarter after 9, while getting our paperwork for the train. The clerk comes running in, he says "the dispatcher just said over the squak box, that a plain hit the world trade center". We thought nothing of it, thinking it was a small private plane, that probelly crashed landed. It wasn' t till I was on my train gettimng ready to leave Bellevue and go 130 miles east to Conneaut, that my cell phoine kept ringing. People were telling me for the next hour that airplanes were highjacked, that we were under attacked, and all orther sorts of things. I had a 3 man crew that day; myself as the conductor, a engineer, and a student engineer. As we got started moving we tried to gather what was going on. We all had a great sense of fear, especially knowing that the railroad tyracks pass Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland. As we went along you could hear the commotion on the radio traffic, crews keying up the radio, playing radio broadcasts; god if there was ever a day that i wished i carried a FM radio in my bag, it was then. We had quite a big train that day and we never did make track speed, it took forever in a day just to go the 50 miles to Cleveland. Wow! Going through Cleveland it was a ghost town. The streets were empty, no people waving at the crossings, nothing. It was then that I knew something was wrong, I could not wait to get to the hotel in Conneaut. Around 7 that night, we finally were off our train and headed to the hotel. Conneaut is a very small town in northeast Ohio, we often joke "that, they role the sidewalks up after dark"; but on this day; when the streets are normally quite, everyone seemed to be at the 3 gas stations in town. They were stocking up on gas fearing price hikes and such. We ended up getting a 12 pack of beer to calm our nerves, and headed to the hoel. Then at the front desk, we heard The President would speak in about a hour. We ordered a pizza and all got settled in, then join each orther, waiting for The President to come on. Just as the pizza delivery man showed The President came on, we inviteed the delivery man in to our room, and we all were glued to the TV. It was like the old stories of people gathering around the radio in WWII, to hear FDR speak. After about a hour I retreated to my own room to get some rest. The railroad was still running trains as normal. So I had to get some rest for the trip back. (just as info, if the railroads were to shut down, the city of New York would come to a hault in 3 days, we are essental, to American commerance) I was scared and alone that night, I remember sleeping with the light on, here I am away from, with no friends or family, in a room all alone. I really was scared. I watched TV all night glued to CNN, and must have nodded off somewhere. The next morning we got called for deadhead, (a taxi ride home) I was so glad that I caught a deadhead, instead of a train. Eventually we got back to Bellevue on the 12th. I got in my truck and drove back to Cleveland. I was amazed, all the radio stations played patriotic music, and coming into Cleveland on Interstate 90, people had put flags on every overpass. Knowing that things were somewhat normal, I went to my moms house hugged her when I got home and spent the night on her couch. Thinking about it all if I had been called for 10am on the 11th, I would have miscalled and never shown, but at least with all the stress of the day, I was doing something I love; working on the railroad! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I won?t forget September 11th. It was a day filled with so many emotions that I?m still trying to sort them out. My roommates and I rose at eight o?clock that morning. We were eating breakfast around the kitchen table in our Arlington house as we casually watched the morning news on TV. Each of us had a full day planned ahead of us, or so we thought. Shortly before we had all planned on leaving for the day, a special report popped up on the TV. The World Trade center appeared to be chugging black smoke out of a whole in the 60th floor. When the newscasters initially informed us that a plane had crashed into the building we all thought a small two-seater had just lost control. Moments later the truth became clear to us. We were under attack. A thunderous boom shook the house. All the dishes and glasses sang aloud as we looked at each other in confusion. "Are they doing some major construction around here?" At least that?s what we wanted to think. In fact, minutes after the boom, the newscasters informed us that a plane had actually hit the pentagon, which lies just over a mile from the house that we were sitting in! We had discovered the source of the boom, and immediately began to panic. Sirens began to blare down our street as we frantically called our loved ones. Cell phones were down, and traffic began to pick up. Emergency vehicles headed into town, while carloads of workpeople packed the street heading out of town. Immediately we thought that it might be best for us to follow suit, and head for the hills. Instead we stayed. Both towers had fallen in New York. There was a plume of smoke visible from our porch. We felt powerless. Nervous energy seethed through our veins. We had to do something. Knowing this would be a day that we would tell our grandchildren about, we wanted to see the pentagon. We strapped on our tennis shoes made the call to go. People walking out of town passed us with somber faces. Each time we passed a man or woman in uniform, our hearts ached. The reality of it all set in once we laid eyes on the pentagon. One of the most powerful buildings in the world lied wounded before us. That was a moment I will never forget. We walked back to our house filled with very different emotions. Anger, fear, and confusion gave us the energy to walk to the pentagon, but now we felt the emotions of sadness for the first time. I didn?t want to do anything but be close to my family. I still want to be closer to my family. It seems that I?ve taken for granted all that I have and as a country, we?ve taken for granted the peace that we?d seen for so many years. As we enter into this new era post 911, may we all remember those who were lost. Outstanding situations call for outstanding people. Thank God we have so many here in the United States. I stated to laugh thinking some idiot had flown a small privet plane into it. I hung up ran to the T.V. room waiting for reports to tell us what happened, then a second plane plungged into the 2nd tower. I fell to my knees, just cried and realized so many people mother, fathers, children, aunts, uncles, cousins friends and partners...would not come home tonight. I thought of the people on the plane, how they felt being so scared. The familes of these victims watching this unfold on the air waves. Watching people run for their lives. My daughter was so scared, she didn't even want to return to school. I had just returned on my first transatlantic flight 13 days before. I was so grateful to be able to go home that day. I promised myself, I would take life a little easier. Appreciate the little things. I would make sure my kids would remember this when they were older and how lucky we are. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I wrote this on September 12, 2001. I love and live by music. All types of music. It's the first thing I turn on when I get in the car. It's the first thing I turn on when I get into work in the morning. Music is such an integral part of my life and I can chart my life by different songs. A song will come on and it can take me back to some of the happiest and darkest times. I talk to God often by music and he definitely talks to me in the same way. There are times when I feel disconnected and not whole and a song will come on and I know it is his voice telling me what to do. Yesterday the music went silent. I realized at one point that I had not listened to any music since the events began to unfold on Tuesday. I realized that I did NOT want to hear any music and it could not console or comfort me in any way. I grew up in and around NYC. I started the first half of my life in Jersey City just across the river from downtown NY. My mom worked at 140 West street across the street from the WTC and she often took me with her and I can remember when there was no WTC, just a really big empty lot. Suddenly, it seemed that there were these two huge structures that began to appear on the horizon, wrapped in neon red and orange tarp. It was the towers being built and for years that was my memory and the view I saw from my home. At the time, the building of the towers became the 8th wonder of the world. How would they stand, who would have the nerve to go to the top once they were completed? I remember all of the construction work and dust surrounding the area. The completion of the towers was just about the same time I guess you could say that me and my generation was coming of age. I was a teenager and the WTC was cool. Many of us would go there to hang out in and outside of the WTC, to people watch, shop, to think that we were grown because we were able to travel from Staten Island across the ferry to the trade center without our parents. You see, at 12 we moved to Staten Island, again just across the river from downtown Manhattan. The new thrill was to see the NY sklyine, the towers dominating the view as you crossed the harbor. I will never forget how awesome and beautiful that view was and is. Even hardened New Yorkers are affected by that view. Many try not to show it, but there was and is pride there. The main goal of many teenagers from SI was to work in the "City" once your education was completed. That included seeking employment at the WTC. I know that there are many Staten Islanders who must be trapped in the rubble. I ended up working for many years in NYC, passing through the WTC as a commuter, never thinking that it could ever be vulnerable to attack. Yesterday the music went silent. At one point, I went to my car to get some air and I opened the NY Daily News and I was reading, I turned to a page and there was a picture of the towers with the caption "DEATH OF A GIANT" and I turned on the radio and a song came on by Earth, Wind & Fire called "REASONS". This was my absolute favorite song in high school and I even listed it in my little bio in my yearbook. One of the lines goes something like this, "The reasons that we're here, the reason that we fear, won't disappear". The message behind the song is that the reason that we are here is to love one another and sometimes love can be fearful and painful, but the reason won't go away. You have to give in to the love because it won't go away. I broke down in tears for the loss of life; the loss of innocence; the loss of our arrogance; the loss of a symbol that I thought would be here forever and that I would be able to share with my son; for the pain that so many families are experiencing now over the loss of a loved one; for the loss of my mom several years ago to Diabetes and the pain I knew she would have felt had she been alive to see the destruction; and I felt devestated that more lives are likely to be lost because there will be retaliation. Today, I turned on the radio and a song came on by Rodney Jerkins called "We fall down, but we get up". The song says that "We fall down, but we get up, for a Saint is just a Sinner who fell down". The punch line to the song is that "You can get back up again". To me, that is God's way of saying that the music will be turned back on, we will get back up again, we will survive and endure, that it is truly darkest before the dawn. If we lean on him for understanding, his angels will mount up on wings and we will experience his embrace. I needed to get this out and I apologize if anyone is offended by this message. I know that it has nothing to do with the purpose of this board. I felt that you all would understand. God Bless you all, remember to keep our country and the families affected in your prayers. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I will never for forget how I heard about the events of 9-11. I was in Connecticut visiting my sister, brother-in-law, and 16 month old nephew.....My daughter was 20 months and my son was just 5 months old. My sister said she would hold down the fort while I took a shower....I was nervous about leaving her to take care of 3 babies by herself for an hour (all moms know what a handful that can be).....She assured me that she could handle it.....Her exact words were, "I'm sure the world's not going to end in the next hour while you're in the shower." I remember her knocking on the bathroom door and saying something like, "I was wrong.....you have to come out here right now" I hurriedly got dressed and yelled (through the door)....."Are the kids ok? What's wrong?" She said the kids were fine and struggled to find the words to describe what she just saw on the news..... I opened the door and she looked flushed and very upset.....She stammered out something about a plane hitting some building that I never heard of......then she mentioned something about the Pentagon being hit. I didn't understand what she was saying.....She finally said, "I think we're at war.....they're crashing OUR planes into buildings......You HAVE to come into the living room..... I felt a cold chill come over me......It felt like I was in a dream.....It seemed so surreal, the walk from the bathroom to her living room, where are 3 babies were playing so innocently, where we were joking and laughing just an hour before.....yet here I was walking in there to see OUR homeland being attacked......our country, where we'd lived our entire life feeling completely safe. When they replayed the clip of the second plane hitting the 2nd tower, I felt the tears streaming down my face unstoppably.....We didn't talk.....We just stared at the screen in disbelief and complete shock. My brother-in-law(a college football coach) came home early that day.....We all sat around holding the babies close and watching the news......We watched the first tower crumble to the ground......We cried as we asked questions that we would soon wish we didn't know the answers to: "My God, were there people still inside?....Is that second building going to fall too???....Were there many people in the plane?." Then came the question that everyone wondered that day: "What else is going to happen?.....Are 'they' going to stop or is this attack going to hit our home and our families?" We called everyone in our family, when we could actually get through on the phone because the lines all across America were being flooded with calls. One of us always stayed by the television if the others left the room......I remember my sister and brother-in-law, when they announced that they were grounding ALL flights in the country and ordering ALL planes, still in the air, to land. I shouted the news over to them and I remember my brother-in-law stammering in complete denial that "they would NEVER do that....you must of heard it wrong.....that would cripple the airline industry.....they, they, they just wouldn't do that." I remember my sister saying something like, "I think crashing planes in buildings is pretty bad for the industry too.....and if they're using our own planes to attack us then I'm pretty sure they WOULD ground all the planes honey." He was like, "But why.....what does that do?" (he was in shock) I said, "I think that's soooo smart to do.....because anyone still flying around up there is NOT supposed to be.....at least we'll know how many bad-guys there are." He replied, "and then what? There are innocent people up there in those planes.....what's the government going to do, shoot them down anyway?" No one said anything.....We all knew the answer.....they would have no choice BUT to do just that......because either way, those people were going to die......and who ever was doing this, was going to make sure they took as many other people with them as possible. It was a tragic and horrible realization......We all felt so helpless, so confused, and so very sad. We heard rumor about the plane that went down in Pennsylvania that was supposively heading towards the White House......We wondered out loud if the people on the plane had heard about what was going on and had tried to stop the people doing this........We cried for joy for the people they saved and we cried that their bravery cost them the ultimate price. We soon asked out loud all the questions that the whole country would soon be asking....."Who did this?.....Why did they do this?.....How could this happen?" I remembered seeing a documentary about this guy Bin Laden that supposively hated us......None of us really understood why......(How innocent and unknowing we all were back then!.....The entire country would learn about terrorist-mind-set in the years to come.) "How could this happen?" was a question that we may never know the answer to.....and no answer could ever make us feel better......It was our awakening to the harsh realities of the world we live in. Our fear and sorrow quickly turned to anger.....even at ourselves.....we had taken our wonderful country for granted.....and we all realized that day, how very much we loved it, and its people, flaws and all. I remember how my sister's street went from seeming foreign (I'm from RI) to seeming just like home.....How our whole country was one big united family.....and no matter where you were in the country, you were home and your neighbors were no longer strangers. Flags lined every house, on every street.....not white flags of surrender but the American Flag.....Within days, you couldn't buy single flag ANYWHERE.....You couldn't buy red, white, and blue anything because it was sold out all across the country.....Candles were lit and placed outside and in windows......Pride and love for our HOME shown through every single person in this country.....Everyone was nicer in the stores....everyone helped one another.....Appreciation for the police and firefighters shown through....We all held our families a little tighter. We fly our flag year round now....We have flag bumper stickers on our cars.....and we light candles every year on September 11th....for the ones lost and the ones left to carry on.....We will never forget. We may disagree about some of the politics and the decisions that our government makes.....but we love this land in which we live and we'll fight to keep her people safe.....We're proud of her.....and we work to make it the best it can be. We support our troops even when we disagree with why they are where they are.....and we pray that our presence there brings freedom and peace someday.....We pray that our leaders hearts are good and their intentions true......We vote even if we don't like either candidate because so many died for us to have the right to do so.......It's our duty. We try to treat others the way we want to be treated....We work hard, play hard, and love much. We live as though "the world were as it should be to show it what it can be."
