Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 On the day of September 11, 2001, I was in my second period class when my Global Studies teacher came in and you could just tell something was wrong by her facial expressions and the look in her eyes. Normally she has a big smile on her face and she is just always happy, but not today. She came in and turned on the television right when the second plane flew into the World Trade Center. I remember my eyes filling with salty water and hearing all of my classmates awing and saying, "how could this be?" You could just see the fear in their eyes but none of us thought it was real at first. We thought it was a movie but it wasn't. It was real. Seeing this happen right before our eyes gave me one of the most horrific feelings I have ever felt in my life. Not to bring any memories back or anything, but seeing all the people jumping out of the buildings, I was hoping that it was like the cartoons when the little firemen came running, holding a blanket underneath them and yelling "I got you" and actually catching them. I guess it doesn't happen like that because this is the real world. We know that all of the 343 firemen and approximately 90 policemen that died while looking for the people that had already been killed in the Twin Towers died trying to to find them and and trying to save the ones that made it. I thank the firemen, policemen, and the paramedics so much for what they did. I think very differently about the policemen now since I know that they are here to help us not just to get us in trouble. To me, the policemen, firemen, and the paramedics are like Angels here to save the day. Now that we know that there might be future terrorist attacks, we can learn from September 11, 2001 and try to stop them before they happen. Our country is tightening down a lot more on our security systems. The government has giving advice on what to do if you see a terrorist. I don't think that this time the terrorists are going to be on a plane. The next time someone thinks of making a terrorist attack I really and truly just don't think it is going to be in the air. Now that this has happened I think that President Bush is going to take stronger precautions and he is going and he is going to make this is all better. Hopefully, he will make peace with Afghanistan so that we don't fight with them anymore. I also hope that he tries and makes peace with every country that we have conflicts with. I hope that there won't be a next time for us to learn from and experience like this. I know thought that no matter what we will probably have conflicts like like this until the world explodes or until everyone is extinct. The best we can do is try to make everything better. I am really sorry and very sympathetic for all the families out there and I hope that everything goes well with them. I believe that all of you are being watched by all of your loved ones that were in the Twin Towers and in the Pentagon. I will Pray for all of you. May you meet your loved ones some day but in a better passing. One of the computer technicians was assisting me with getting my web site published so I could add information to it. My site is called http://www.revealinggodsbreath.com. I thought the significance of what I was trying to get published and the attack on the World Trade Center was awesome. I was trying to get God's word out to the world and Satan was trying to destroy the United States. Another customer came in and asked if we had heard anything. We all thought it was a sick joke, but then one of the technicians wives called and we knew it was not a joke. They pulled the news up on a computer and we watched it there. It was awful. I will never forget that day. My husband drives a fuel truck, several, as a matter of fact. I went by his place of business to make sure he had heard about it and since that time, they have had to make so many changes and take so many precautions to make sure terrorists do not take one of the fuel trucks and use it as a bomb like they did the planes. Tell us your story: I had just come out of my Word Processing class at Central Kentucky Technical College when a girl had said that a plane had crashed into a building. Upon further conversation and television viewing, my thoughts of "oh it is just a pilot that can't fly" turned into "oh my god, those people" The images that were on the television were horrific and mind boggling. All that I could think was that the world was coming to an end. There was a lot of talk around the school about the Guard Station in Kentucky with all of the explosives in Nichlosville and what if anything could be done to save those of us close to home. When the last plane crashed it was hard to know if it was relief that the attacks were over and did not come close to home, or sorrow for those that were directly affected. I can only hope that as the time passes from that dreadful September day, that our lives can begin to come back to "normal" and that the pain will subside. I remember we were in the middle of class, school had just started, and our principal came rushing in. They set up a T.V. in the main room and put all of the sixth graders in it. Before they turned to T.V. on, Mrs. Barbie, our principal, started explaining to us that we had to "be strong for the other students" As we watched what was happening to the towers on the T.V. I didn't really understand. Why were the Twin Towers burning? It didn't make sense to me at the time. I learned later that the terrorists had also attacked the Pentagon and that my father was there fighting the fire that had broken out after the plane had crashed. I'm so glad my father didn't die there. Looking back I see everyone was so united and banded together, but right now I see everyone fighting and messing up each others lives. To this day I have a deep hatred for Osama and his kind. What type of foul, disgusting, vomited piece of trash could do this to other people? Just because they don't agree with your view on life doesn't mean you can destroy theirs! What if we went over and completely destroyed you? Destroyed your family? Ruined your life? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At 8:55 am my husband called me from work and urged me to turn on the news. He said a plane crashed into the Twin Towers. When I turned on the news I saw one of the towers on fire and smoke billowing out. I couldn't believe my eyes. I remember turning for one split second and when I turned back I witnessed the second plane collide with the second tower. My heart just sank. At that point it didn't sink in but as I drove to pick up a friend on McLean Ave in Yonkers I could see so clearly the towers on fire from the New York State Thruway South right before the McLean Avenue exit. My heart just dropped. I couldn't believe it! The Trade Towers were about 45 minutes away from where I was driving but from the window of my car I thought I could reach out and touch it. When I reached work everyone was nervous not knowing what was happening. We heard of the third plane hitting the pentagon and it was clearly real to us. We were under attack. On the radio were heard someone live telling the radio announcer on 1010 Wins that the first tower had just came down before her eyes. I ran to an office on the 6th floor of our building and the sight was horrific. I saw a big black mushroom in the sky. It looked just like a scene from a nuclear bomb. I couldn't stop crying from then on. I was born and raised in New York. I have a vague recollection of my father taking us to the Trade Center when we were children one night to the observatory. It was a majestic view. Nothing could compare. Right then I realized how much I loved being a New Yorker. That New York runs through my blood, its not just a place, its a feeling. The few times I was sent to the trade center on business I remember the feeling of intimidation. Those buildings were huge and powerful. I wanted to work there but I realized that it was not a place for me. The Twin Towers actually scared me. Even through all of my mixed emotions about them I still loved them. They were a place I could drive by at any time. I loved seeing them at night and I loved visiting the Atrium around midnight. Where else in the world could you go that would make your heart pound so loudly than there. I've been to the Eiffle Tower and it doesn't compare. On December 27, 2001 I finally visited the site and once I looked into the gaping hole I broke down in tears. I closed my eyes and I could hear the screams from the people lost there. It's like I felt their souls reaching out for me. I asked God to watch over them. I don't think I can over really go back down there. I don't know when my wounds will heal but that September 11, 2001 will never be erased from my mind. That day, someone betrayed me as a New Yorker. The one thing they didn't get me to do is run from here. I don't think I'll ever run from New York. It's my home, its where I belong, its where I was born and now it's a part of me. Every day on the bus I would look at the Manhattan skyline before taking the long turn into the Lincoln Tunnel. That particular morning, I know I had my eyes closed. Although I am big Jets fan, I watched some of the Giants-Broncos game the night before on Monday Night Football. I was napping on the bus when we entered the tunnel about 8:35 AM. I rarely wear a watch and the first thing I do upon entering PA is to look up at the big clocks and see what time it is. I recall that the time that day was 8:46 AM (time the first plane hit). I walked out into the street (a beautiful sunny day) and walked a few blocks to my office. Since I am in the media business, we have CNN on in the lobby at all times. I saw the WTC with a big hole in it on TV and wondered if a small plane had hit it. The pilot must have a stroke or seizure and lost control. My thoughts went back to hearing about a plane once hitting the Empire State Buidling. I suggested to the receptionist that we switch to local NY coverage and I switched the channel. As each employee came into work they were greeted with a "did you see what happened to the WTC". I immediately called my wife and told her to turn on the TV. That was the last phone call I was able to make as the phone lines in NYC became extremely tied up. As my office watched, the 2nd plane hit. This was no longer an accident! I walked over to 5th Ave. and 39th street and you could see everyone on 5th Ave. looking down the street (about 3 miles) at both WTC Towers burning. It was at this point that I thought one of them was starting to lean. Could it topple over? We went back to the office and seconds later, the first tower collapsed. I went back to my desk and began getting e-mails from friends and relatives. I told them to call my wife. She had already gone up to my sons school to organize everyone to say the holy rosary. The word on the news was that NYC was being closed. No way in and no way out. Being in Times Square area, I thought we might be a target. Eventually, we hard that Penn Station was opening up in the afternoon. By this time bomb scares were being called in all over the city. NYC had turned into a war-zone! I managed to get a train back to NJ at 2 PM. A few of the passengers wore looks on their faces like theyhad seen hell and the dust and grime on their clothes indicated that they were a lot closer to the scene than I was. I got home and was greeted by my wife and kids. Each person that got off the train had someone waiting for them with a warm embrace. After watching more of the coverage by myself on TV I decided to take the kids to apark down the block. You could smell the burning jet fuel in the air. Turns out I only knew of 2 people that died that day in the towers. One guy from Cantor was the catcher on my little league team when I was 12 years old and one guy was a husband of a former co-worker. It was his first day on the job at work. To this day, I have not gone near the site, but I still see the skyline every morning and see the obvious void in downtown where the towers once stood proudly. I hadn't realized the importance. They told of planes crashing into our World Trade Center. Being a pilot myself, I knew that this person might have had an engine faliure or steering problems. I never thought that someone would have done something so horrible on purpose. When I saw on the television from my second period class what had happened, I finally realized the magnitude of the problem. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw people jumping out of the buildings falling many stories to their death. Then there were the other commercial airlines which crashed to the ground. These events are very disturbing. This is when our whole nation rose together in a more uniting bond. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On that day I took my daughter to pre-school and when I came home I turned on the television to the news. I don't usually watch the news in the morning but I just felt like watching that morning. Right away the vision of the twin towers smoking was in front of me. Only the first tower was hit at this time and I watched with my mouth dropped open as another plane flew into the other tower. I ran to my younger sister's room to wake her. I went downstairs to my roomate and told her to turn on the tv downstairs. We had 2 tv's turned to different news channels. Then we all watched as the third plane went into the Pentagon. I got ready for work and listened on the radio. It was rumored that a plane had been hijacked from Dallas Texas. All the way to work I was worried that plane was headed to Amarillo. At first I thought "Why would they crash a plane in Amarillo?" but then a co-worker reminded me of the nuclear disassembly plant Pantex that is just outside Amarillo. I knew people that worked there and always in the back of your mind you think Pantex will blow up and I'm not with my daughter! At lunch I went home and ran to my daughter and hugged her. By this time the damage was done, we continued to hear of the towers and other buildings being unstable and collapsing, but air traffic was shut down so I went back to work listening to the radio hearing about the damage done and the estimates of the lives lost. I put my American flag sticker like many other Americans and tried to calm my fears so that I can calm my daughter's fears. It has now been a year. I took my daughter to kindergarten and came back home to get ready for work. With the funny feeling in my stomach I turned the tv on to the news and watched the memorials. Now we have a new baby in the house, my nephew is 3 months old. As the National Anthem was sung at the Pentagon I held him with his little hand across his chest and sang the song to him. I hope that some can relate and understand while I am sure others will just be upset. I was at work when the September 11th incident occurred. I was listening to my radio at my desk when I heard what had happened. I was very startled by the whole thing and very very hurt to see those that have lost loved ones. I can not imagine the pain that they have and will continue to go through. Now though I said that I was hurt, I was also very upset with the fact that it had happened in the first place. Now if there were prior threats then our country should have been on alert regardless of whether they thought someone was bluffing. Our country is the home of the free, but sometimes we are al little too free to some that come in from other countries. Not that I don't welcome people from all nationalities I am just referring to those that are guilty (you know who you are) of terrorism. Secondly, I would like to also say that everyone knows what the nationalities of those that performed the acts of terrorism on September 11th, but We (African Americans) are looked at as if We are the ones that do all this damage to our country. All that We are trying to do is raise families, work, love, and have a good time because as all of you can see Life Is Too Short not to live it to the fullest. I hope that a lesson was taught about Us minorities. We are not here to wreck and destroy our country, We are here to live just like everyone else. We want to have good things and know good people. We are not all bad. Some of us are decent people. I hope that those that have endured a tremendous amount of sorrow can take it easy and live life as you would if you had your loved ones still near. Because if you think about they are still here, in your heart, in your thoughts, in your presence. I hope that those who are offended can forgive me one day for expressing myself. But I just believe that we need to all come together and live as one. As far as I am concerned we have no color, we should have each other. God bless every one of you and God Bless America! I went to school, where my friends and I celebrated until classes started. I went to language arts, then to reading, lunch, and finally to social studies. Only one more class after this one, I thought. In reading we had gotten an anouncement on the intercom. Our principal told the teachers not to let the children know any recent information...which didn't help, because of course we kids began to pester the teachers! In social studies our teacher turned on the television and let us watch. The first scene was of the Twin Towers with smoke billowing from one of them. There was a news flash, and the second plane had struck, killing thousands more.I felt like crying, all of those lives gone, because...? There were no explanations. And on my birthday too! Now, years later, I am so proud of my country for finally capturing Saddam and I am proud of all of those soldiers for fighting, risking their lives for their country. I could never be so brave. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was one of the lucky ones. I live in Colorado and was not directly impacted by the gut-wrenching attrocities of 9/11/01. I was watching the ABC morning TV show, Good Morning America. They mentioned that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. Moments later, they showed footage of another plane hitting the second tower. I could not believe my eyes! I had just had minor heart surgery 4 days prior, on 9/7/01. Being on medication and feeling rather tired, I went to bed for a nap (my God how fortunate... a nap!) just in time to watch the horrible sight of the first tower coming down, then the second. I awoke my 23 year old son and told him that he had to see this... it was surrealistic and it was history. It wasn't until later that afternoon when I awoke that I began to realize the full impact of the day. I thought of the lives that were wasted, the damage that was done and the families that had been destroyed. Being a history buff, I immediately drew a parallel to Pearl Harbor... the terrible devastation of both days by sneak attacks. I felt sick inside for those poor people lost... and for their families and friends. To this day, I do not feel justice has been served. I do not believe we have punished the leaders of this terrible attack. I only hope and pray that, as we did in the 1940's after the Pearl Harbor attack, we decisively win this war on terrorism. The lives wasted and families destroyed on 9/11/01, at a minimum, deserve justice. God bless our country, our leaders, those lost and their families and loved ones. It was around 7:15 when I arrived at school. As i walked to my locker, I heard a couple people talkin about some plane crash. I got my books, putting behind what i heard and headed for first period. When the bell rang to begin class, I had already taken my seat and began to rest. The voice of the teacher woke me from my drowzy state. He started talking about not having to do any classwork today and that we were to watch CNN. I was glad to know that we were to only watch T.V. all period. The teacher switched the T.V. on and flipped to CNN. I fixed all my attention on the T.V. screen I saw the most disturbing footage I've ever seen. Planes had crashed into the WTC buildings just about an hour before. I was shocked to see this, knowing that it was really happening. For the rest of the period, my eyes were only on the screen, watching the this phanominon. All my periods that day were of just watching CNN. Friends and other students were all talking about it. It was on everyone's mind. Days past, and still mention of what had happened in New York was present. It was broadcasted and replayed over and over, making me somewhat annoyed. My heart went out to all those who had been victims of the destruction, and I prayed for them. I felt lucky to be on the other side of the country, lucky to be safe then. But i will never forget. I got my kids, John, Michael, Richard and Rose ready for school and dropped my husband, Juan off at the Metro station in Dunn Lorring. It was a gorgeous morning. The signs of autumn were in the air and summer was slowly slipping away. I wanted to get a head start on my day so I decided to go into work a little early. I arrived about 8:45 and said my normal cheering "hello's" and "good mornings" unaware that something terrible had just happened. Within minutes all hell broke loose. Karen, one of my supervisors, informed us that a plane had flown into one of the towers. I was in the stock room in the back of the store with another supervisor, Sue. I was shocked. I remember saying, "It has to be an accident." Sue said, "I hope it's not terrorist again." Moments later we heard of the second plane hitting the other tower. At that point we had all gathered in the frame shop. We were all stunned. This was definitely no accident. Lou, one of our ladies in the floral department, was openly weeping. One of her nieces worked in the twin towers. I just felt sick to my stomach. Everything was just so unreal. The phone didn't ring once and it left us with an eerie silence. I was in a state of denial. Then the third plane went into the Pentagon. Juan worked in Old Town Alexandria and he could see the smoke from the Pentagon when he looked out his office window. He called me and said he was coming home and I needed to do the same. He just wanted all of us to be together. Jean-Pierre, one of my co-workers was frantic. His wife works in the Naval Research building and they all were locked down. No one was allowed to go in or out. He had no idea if he'd be seeing her anytime soon. I drove home as calmly as I could to find my huband waiting impatiently for me. We picked up Richard and Rose first. The school had been secured and you were only allowed into the building if you were a parent picking up a child. Rose (8 years old at the time) didn't understand why everyone was leaving and Richard (10 at the time) was quiet as usual. We then proceeded to pick up John and Michael (14 & 12). Apparently everyone wanted to be home safe and with family. The roads were full of cars as if it were rush hour and not 10:00 o'clock in the morning. John was affected the most. He was old enough to understand that our life had been forever changed. When we got home, Juan sat us down and he spoke to the children and explained that some very bad people had done something terrible and he just wanted all of us to be together where we were all safe. We tried not to watch the news constantly because it was just too much to take in. Michael asked very few questions and when he did, it was for the comfort of information. John, however, was glued to the television. He had to know because that was his solace. Sleep didn't come easily for us that night. I remember checking in on John at 10:30pm and reminding him no to stay up much longer. He shut the tv off a short while later, but I could hear him tossing and turning all night. Although this happened a year ago, it's still so fresh in my mind. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am from Holland but on Sept 11, we were ALL attacked, I guess. I couldn't have been in a stranger place. My girlfriend, another friend and myself were in the Andes in Peru at the time. On the very early morning of Sept 11, we left the village of Chivay in a rambling little bus for a 2+ hour ride to the Colca Canyon, which is a renowned spot for condor watching. We had a marvellous time. This was truly the high point of our 3-week trip. The weather was gorgeous, though cold, as it was very high in the mountains. I remember little clouds which looked most strange, no doubt due to the high altitude. From way below in the gorge, the condors came until at a little after 8am they were flying straight over us. This was 9am NYC time, i.e. around the time when the tragedy unfolded. About half an hour later after having been at the Canyon for about an hour, we had left the spot and came in a very small village where a passenger of another small bus had heard something on a very unclear radio. A world disaster was taking place in New York. What we heard was so odd we couldn't believe it - 8 (!) planes crashed on New York, a million (!) people wounded or dead. What the hell was going on? We did not have a radio ourselves and in dead silence our bus travelled back to Chivay where 2 hours later we were to have lunch. I had this sick feeling in my stomach. The air was like lead. We were all so anxious so know what had happened. Back in Chivay, opposite our little restaurant there was a market and one of the stalls sold TV's. They were all on. Everyone huddled around the stall to see what I think was Spanish CNN. I couldn't understand what was said but the images were clear enough. Unbelievable - even though the initial report WE had heard wasn't quite true. The towers (where my girlfriend and myself had been to just 6 months earlier) had only just collapsed. Everyone was stunned, staring open mouthed at the TV in that tiny Peruvian village. Some in our little group were crying. I realized that whatever would happen next, we would be relatively safe where we are. A thousand thoughts flash through your head at such a time and at such a strange place. Another long busride later saw us arriving in the bigger city of Arequipa early in the evening. By then we had a hotel room with TV and access to CNN and we were glued to the thing all night. It was only then that we learnt of the Pentagon crash and the 4th plane having come down. Needless to say in the days afterwards I was a steady customer to Peruvian internet cafes to check on news. Peru was like another world where it had an impact, but not that huge. Whereas we were absolutely dying for news. It wasn't until we got back and saw all the images proper that everything really sunk in. In october we had planned to go back to New York (we LOVED the city) - my girlfriend, myself and my mother - as a present to the latter after a rough time following my Dad's passing. We were to book this the week after we returned from Peru. Needless to say this never happened. I cherish the memories of the times we were there (October 1998 and March 2001). I cherish the pics taken from the top of the WTC, and the view I had from my hotel in I think Canal Street (thankfully preserved on pics too). What a waste. I had been running late for work (hem of my dress needed some quick needlework), and I remember standing in the bathroom doing my makeup when the first plane hit. I thought nothing about it other than an unfortunate accident, and went about finishing getting ready. As I was heading out the door, I reached to turn off the TV as the second plane hit. That caused me to leave the TV on and reach for the phone, calling one of my co-workers at the PD. I told them to head into my office and turn on the TV. By the time I arrived 10 minutes later, there were 8 people in my office watching the coverage. 35 minutes later, another co-worker came into our office and stated he had just watched a plane hit the Pentagon. He had to repeat what he said before we all ran out of my office to his desk to look out across Ft Myer to the black plume of smoke rising on the other side. That moment in time is burned in my memory...I remember who was standing next to me and just what the dispatcher was saying. After taking 15 seconds to let it all sink in, everyone grabbed what they needed from their desk and ran to get to the scene. I headed to find anyone in the command staff...our Chief was in New York, another Deputy Chief was on vacation in Florida and another was on his way to Richmond. I found the one remaining Chief and told him whatg had happened, then went to go track down MY boss, whom I caught as he was heading out the door to play a round of golf. (He had not turned on the TV). The rest of the day was a blur of activity. A former co-worker came and helped me handle media inquiries, the only way to communicate with the outside world was e-mail. I spent that first day at the PD doing my job, and then spent the next 2 weeks in the South Parking Lot of the Pentagon facility. I will never forget standing infront of the impact sight, seeing the damage with a piece of landing gear behind me and pieces of plane fuselage laying on the ground around me. And the smells of jet fuel and fire and death. While we did our job and helped who we could, it was hard for me to fathom what happened in NYC at the WTC. It took me two years to get to Ground Zero, and when I got there, it was just mind numbing to look around and realise just how lucky, in the grand scheme of things, we were. As a result of my work with the attacks, I have chosen a career in Domestic Preparedness. I use what I learned as a result of the attacks to try and help the first responders in communities across the country make sure they are as prepared as they can be for a disaster, whether it be natural, or the result of a terrorist attack. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Last year at September 11, I was in Korea. I was just watching TV when our Korean news suddenly switched to CNN. As it showed the first building get hit, I thought it was a movie or a play going on, because it was unbelieveable. Then when I realized what it is, I was shocked with horror. Everybody just froze, nothing able to say. As the second building got hit again, I got angry. How could something happen to people? It was so sympathetic seeing people throwing themselves of the building. I had been to the World Trade Center a lot of times, even on the roof. So it made me able to feel how it may be up there. As Pentagon was attacked again, I was praying to stop these disasters, let it be dream. But it was too true. After it happened, I listened to the radio day by day, hearing these very sad stories of the people who died, and their families and friends. As I recall my memory, I still remember it was too shocking. This terrorism was shown live in all countries, including Korea. This was a very sad mark in human history, and I hope it never happens again. I am really sorry for the people who died at September 11th, 2001.
