Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My son was sick that day so I stayed home from work. We were watching TV when all the sudden the first plane hit. I thought it was pilot error until I saw with my own eyes the second plane hit and then I knew we were under attack. I watched this whole event live on natinal TV. I did not know one soul in that mass destruction but yet I have cried, prayed and followed this event closely over the past year. My heart aches terribly for all of the people involved. I wish I could have been at ground zero to give my love and support and to possibly help in some way. Unfortunately, I was never given that chance. I wish I could tell those people who lost love ones that this one person in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky loves them all very much and cries for them and prays for them to find some kind of peace and closure. That they have touched my heart tremendously and if there were anything I could do for any last one of them I would and be honored to do so! I'm so sorry for all your heartache and pain. Tell us your story: I guess during the earlier hours of 9/11, I think I could've been one of the leading candidates for the National Apathy Award.... My day started out as usual, waking up a bit late, groggy from another 5 hour sleeping spell, hurring to take a shower, get dressed, and speed down 495 and Braddock Lane to make a 9AM class at George Mason University. I probably left my house a little before 8:30 and was nearing the campus feeling good because I was making great time on the road. I live in Alexandria and it takes me at least 25 minutes(on a REAL GOOD day) to get to GMU. I thought I was actually going to make it to campus with time to spare to get to my class on TIME. Anyways, I had been listening to WTOP 1500 AM on my way to school that morning at a little before 8:45AM the radio announcer was just mentioning some news about how Iraqi military officials had claimed that they shot down an American fighter plane. I think it just turned out to be a drone/surveillance craft. The next thing I know, the announcer breaks routine and says something like "...this just in...a plane has a apprently crashed into the World Trade Center..." I was surprised but just wrote it off as a really freak piloting accident. I continue listening to the incoming reports and the news commentators discussing what could've happend. I arrived at parking lot K at around 9AM or so, when ever the time the second plane struck because the commentator mentioned that "...a second plane has struck the World Trade Center..." And AGAIN I writ it off as a freak plane accident. I honestly thought that maybe somehow, someway, the two planes almost hit each other and swerved away from each other, one hitting one tower and the other hitting the other tower. Of course now that I look back, I didn't take into account the time differential between the two crashes. Chalk it up to getting little sleep the night before and being in a rush to get to class(it was after 9AM now). I got out of my car and made a walked quickly to my class room which was in Robinson B(at least another 5 mins). To my surprise, when I got to the room no one was there. Then I rememberd on my syllabus that it said something about going to the library to learn about reasearch resources for our term paper. So I guessed that my class had gone over to Fenwick or possibly the Johnson Center. I saw one of my classsmates who was also late and she wondered where everyone was as well. Anyways, she decided to go home and sleep since it was already 9:15. I still wanted to see if I could find my class so I decided to take a look at Fenwick library to see if they were there. I made it too the library and did a quick search but didn't see them so I decided to give it up. Now I wasn't sure what I should've done as I had no other classes that day. It occurred to me that I was dead tired from lack of sleep during the night so I decided to go take a nap at one of the corners of the upper levels in the Johnson Center, they have couches there where people usually conk out. So on my way to the couches I pass by the News Center where they have T.V.'s and there were a bunch of people watching the news reports. I just brushed it off, thinking "oh I already know about that, that's totally weird those guys flew into the World Trade Center" and headed up to go to sleep. Luckily I found an area on the top floor with noone there. I lied down on the couch readying myself for a nice nap. The last thing I remember thinking as I lay my head down was noticing how beautifully blue the sky was outside as I peered out the large panes of glass surrounding this corner of the building. The exact time when I woke up is now cloudy to me but I'm guessing it was either 10AM or 10:30. I don't remember why I woke up, maybe I think I set my watch alarm, but I got up and I think I decided I was going to go home. I walked down the stair case and noticed that the crowd surrounding the televisions in the News Center had more than tripled! It really piqued my interest this time and I decided to go see what was going on. I got around the back of the crowd and peered at the televisions and saw the footage of two smoking towers, little did I know that it was only a replay. At that moment, one of the guys that used to work with me at the Patriot Center caught my attention. I walked over to him and was like "what's going on?" What he said next left me dumbfounded. "The World Trade Center towers have collapsed....the Pentagon just got hit, and there's one more plane that they just lost contact with" At this point I was just totally open eyed and replied with "What the hell!? what the hell is going on!? I just woke up! I just woke up from a nap!" I look at the television screens to catch the footage of tower two beginning to collapse and crumbling to the ground. It was quickly follwed up with footage of a smoldering Pentagon building. I just stood there with my former co-worker watching the tv's. Speculating on where the last plane was headed, I said "They're probably going to go for the Washington Monument.." My co-worker follwed up with an "oh yeah....or maybe the Capitol..." By this time the surreality of the situation was just mind numbing. One of the people sitting around me picked up that day's edition of the New York post and pointed to the picture of whom I think was a baseball player on the front page. He said something like "..and this was on the front page today..." Someone else replied with "...It won't look like that tomorrow..." He put that paper down, which I eventually took to save as a memento but I've lost it by now, and I surveyed the faces of the people around me. Mostly just blank stares, people on cell phones, the pay phone, some people crying. There was this one girl standing behind me wiping away her tears. I almost felt like crying when I saw her crying. I felt like going over and hugging her or something but I didn't. I just was kind of out of it, weirded out at what had just happend. I had just gone for a little thrity minute nap thinking everything was OK, but I wake up to what seems like a war zone. It was just totally dreamlike. Whatever the case, I eventually made my way back home to my house in Alexandria. My brother came home shortly home afterwards from GMU too. Then my youngest brother came home from high school later that day. And finally my mom came home from work at the Washington Hospital Center in the evening. My dad called from overseas to see if everything was ok. It was just a real strange day. It was such a beautiful morning, not a cloud in the sky, who would have thought that something horrific would have happend that day? Certainly not I. To this day, there is a certain way that I'm still in disbelief that the World Trade Center towers are gone, just totally destroyed. If you weren't able to visit the WTC before that September 11th morning, then you aren't going to be able to visit those same old towers again. It just amazes me how the enormity of NEVER weighs upon things. 'Never' is endless, indefinite. I think I learned my lesson not to brush things off that day.... Tell us your story: As I sat in my Kitchen nook finishing my breakfast I was about to turn off Good Morning America on NBC.I was the Head Football Coach at Montour High School at the time and preparing them to play a very difficult game verse Hopewell High School,Tony Dorsetts Alma Mater. Suddenly the special report came on by Katie that a small plane had smashed into the World Trade Center North Building. I could not believe that a pilot was that poorly trained that he could make such a costly error. As they spoke on the incident I thought about how proper training is so important in every thing we prepare to do successfully. Have my Coaching Staff and myself prepared these young men to be at their very best this Friday eve so as to perform at their top potential. Then 9:06 the report of the second plane which I watched on TV fly into the South World Trade Building assaulting it and all of it's patrons held inside. I totally realized it now was a Cowardly Act by enemies of our great country and felt embarrassed that I had still been thinking of a High School football game. I instantly began to think of the families of those Americans on the planes and inside the buildings. I felt horrific pain for them and theirs and wandered what can be done to hepl them at this terrible time. I knew I could only do what was in my control so I prepared to instruct my team of the assault on our country and assure them America would do what it had to do to protect them as time marched on. I then had them take a vote if they wanted to play the game this week end or cancel it as I spoke of the great American Spirit.They chose to play that week end and I know every American lost that day would approve and back them 100%. The teams took the field that week end holding the American Flag and exchanging them at mid field as a tribute to those lost and a promise that our Freedom would go ondoubted and their lives avenged. Tell us your story: When I woke up on September 11,2001 and turned on the television, I saw the most horrific sight of my life- the United States was under attack. I was a mother to be and my husband, like so many others, was at work. He is a school teacher. I immediately called the school and they said they were not going to send anyone home: after all, this was Wall, SD. What could anyone gain by taking out such a small town? As I sat there in disbelief, the first tower collapsed. I started crying. I thought to myself, "What am I doing bringing a baby into such a violent and terrible world?". I continued to watch and saw families looking for their loved ones, people scattering eveywhere with ashes and blood covering their bodies. I called my mother to tell her I was alright and she said she was alright, too. We felt safe where we were. She was in another small town, Spearfish, SD. just 100 miles down the road. However, exactly half way between us is Ellsworth Airforce Base. Knowing that made us feel all the more safe and all the more threatened at the same time. What if these terrorists weren't done? What if they went after our military, too? I started to panic. About that time, my husband came home for lunch. We stood in the doorway hugging for ten minutes. Then, Tom Brokaw started telling the story of how stores were opening their doors to fleeing people and providing food and clothing and shelter at no charge. Strangers were holding hands in the street, praying for a miracle, that no one they knew was killed. It was then that I thought to myself "That's why I'm bringing a child into the world- to hold hands and pray with a stranger who needs comfort and to lend a helping hand in times of need." For this, I was proud to be "a mother to be". Knowing that my child may one day be a firefighter or a police officer or anyone like those heroes in the streets of New York City, Philadelphia, or Washington, DC. made me smile in the midst of all this turmoil. And as I watched everyday, common citizens turning into Angels of Mercy amidst the darkest hour in history, it was then I realized how proud I am to be an American and what it really means to have true freedom. An interesting place to be when a disaster strikes close to where you live... It actually started the day before the attack. I can't remember what the topic was, but I distinctly remember Mr. Graney saying something about, "How weird would it be, if someone just destroyed something familiar? Something in this area...like the Washington Monument? Or Lady Liberty?" It was just something he had asked to make us think....we never knew something like that would really happen. At the beginning of third period on Sepetmber eleventh, Mr. Graney was about to put in "The Devil's Advocate" so he could explain something or other about morals and temptation and whether or not it was right or wrong. Once he turned on the TV, we heard Bryant Gumble announce that the first plane had hit the first tower in New York. Apparently he hadn't noticed, because we had to yell at Mr. Graney not to put in the tape, because this was definitely very big news. Once we had gotten the gist of what had happened, Mr. Graney went out across the hall to tell the other teachers in the area to turn on their TVs. We flipped the channel to several different news stations and settled on CNN, as all of the stations were covering the same thing. We heard the opinions of a few startled callers who had either witnessed the impact or had heard rumours of other targets. While Mr. Graney was still out, my entire class watched as the second plane hit the second tower. We started yelling for Mr. Graney to come back in and we explained what had happened. One of the security personell came up to talk with Mr. Graney. While the teacher was otherwise occupied, the rest of us started talking about how this may not really have been happening, that it may have just been a conspiracy. It was Philosophy class, so what are you gonna do? So, Mr. Coles, the security person wanted to talk to the class about the incident. We turned the TV off in order to listen to him. He had worked for the government at one time, and apparently this was affecting him strongly. He began to talk about some of his work, when all of a sudden this girl in the hall started screaming, "They got the pentagon! Oh my God they're coming for us! My Daddy!" We discovered that her father worked in the pentagon, and that another plane had actually struck it recently. So we turned the TV back on immediately. It just seemed so unreal. This couldn't have been happening to us... Class ended, and I went to lunch. There were rumours that another plane had hit a mall in LA, but those were untrue. I had also heard about the third plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, but I wasn't sure if I should believe that one either. I also noticed that some girl had brought a kitten to school, and it had a blue tuft of hair on its head. I just...walked, sort of in a daze. I ate my lunch, and watched as the towers collapsed on TV. I started to lose interest. I was sad, because many people had died, and more people had lost their jobs because the buildings had been ruined. I was sad, because firemen and policemen and other had lost their lives to rescue any survivors from ground zero. I was sad, because I am aenemic and therefore cannot donate blood. I was sad, because I had no money to donate to the cause. In the weeks that followed, I became angry with the people I knew. Many were becoming patriotic, and blaming the Taliban for their smallest problems. Such as, our coffee machine wasn't working, so my mother started ranting and raving about how the Taliban had infiltrated our coffee maker and did it just to get to her. She would talk to my aunt and ask if she was wearing her red white and blue. I am now sick of those colours... I'm glad that the level of the attitude of the American people has gone down. I'm glad that I don't see or hear the words "Nine-Eleven" wherever I go. I'm glad that I don't have to listen to anymore strange theories about why we were hit, and whether or not World War Three had started. I think it was a tragedy, but I also think that we've mourned long enough. Yes, we should remember it, but we needn't dwell on it forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'm a disaster relief counselor for an international organization supporting families of terrorism victims. I was in the locker room at my YMCA, getting ready for a workout, when someone ran into the locker room with the news of what was happening. I got dressed and ran out to the lobby in time to watch the second plane hit the South Tower. Then I went home to wait for the phone call. For the next three weeks I did 12-hour shifts on the phones, fielding calls from family members desperate for information, or just wanting to tell their stories over and over again...as if in the retelling they might be able to get their hearts and minds around something so devastating. A month later, I went to Manhattan as a Red Cross volunteer, and the stories were harder to hear. The people of New York did not feel what the terrorists wanted them to feel. When people told their stories I saw the same expression in every face. It took me awhile to realize it was not terror or anger I was seeing, it was sorrow. It was an intense expression of empathy on behalf of those who did not survive. After they told their heartbreaking stories, inevitably, they would ask me if there was some way they could help someone else. I'll never forget that. I receiveds many calls for our security. Some one from the office notifiesd that a plane went into world trade center. I looked out window and could see white,grey smoke and tickertape paper than I got my things together in case. I heard people in my office say another plane hit the other wtc. One lady saw the fire ball. I sat at my desk ready to go with purse around shooulder and jacket on and bags at my feet. Finally the quards came up to our floor and our director ssaid to evacuate. We walked down twenty stairs and some took elevator. We waited on trading floor and some brokers were not in yet, and some ran out. By this time i called home and met my best friend who stayed with me through the whole thing. We were told at one point not to flee because of smoke and debris. On the floor we waited till twelve thirty. Some came in frome outside dusted and at one point we went in sub basement 4 floors down. People washed dust off in the many sinks. Some were treated for asthma. Our security guards did such a good job taking care of us, directing people and distributing maskes and water and rags for the smoke. Also the cafeteria people took good care of us giving cookies and water and later on, sandwiches. I was so upset and only drank water. I prayed throgh the whole thing and even gathered a few people too pray. At 12:30, we werer fainally told to go home and I could see all that sticky gray duct with papers all over the streets that were so familiar on happier times. I was furtunate to get the ferry because before me and after me there was a halt. All the life jackets were out on ferry. When I got home, I was so thankful, and hugged everyone. Tell us your story: Students in my debate class at Comstock HS on the east side of Kalamazoo, Michigan, were studying and discussing that year's national topic, weapons of mass destruction. Suddenly word spread like wildfire that there had been a terrorist attack in New York. We tuned in to the television coverage and were left awestruck and speechless at the video images of the attacks. We had never significantly considered what came to be known as weapons of mass effect before, but now the real world had invaded our little corner and given us a horrifying slap in the face. My own thoughts turned to my uncle in New York, who only a year or so earlier would have been working in one of the twin towers. We shared grief at the lives of innocent people senselessly and callously struck down, with no warning what was coming, mixed with a strange sense of wonder at the stories of bravery -- the public safety personnel who fought to save lives in NYC, and the passengers who fought to stop the terrorists aboard the last plane to go down. The only event in the past two decades that I can think might have carried the same impact for schoolchildren is the explosion of the Challenger shuttle. I do not doubt that it will stay with them all their lives. I hope it will not be with bitterness, but instead with a strong desire to make the world a better place. I was in school during period 3 and everyone was taking notes from Miss Kersch. We heard that two airliners crashed right into the World Trade Center and killed a lot of people. There was a third plane that hit the Pentagon and a fourth plane that crashed into a cornfield in Pennsylvania. The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania did so because the passengers were able to take control over the plane. The passengers did this because they knew they were probably going to crash into a building and kill many people. When the planes hit the World Trade Center they acted as a bomb and put a hole right through the buildings causing a big explosion. A couple hours after the planes went into the Towers, they started to collapse. The weird thing is that the second tower that was hit fell first and the tower that was hit first fell last. We did not do anything in school that day except watch the television to be kept updated on what was happening in Washington, the Pentagon, New York City and Pennsylvania. The planes that went into the buildings in New York and Washington reminded us about Pearl Harbor. At Pearl Harbor, Japanese suicide bombers had planes crash into the United States Naval Base and we entered World War 2. The terrorists who did these attacks were trained in schools paid by Bin Ladin. Bin Ladin is the leader of the terrorist group and a Fundamentalist. They hijacked these planes because they were told that they would have a better chance to get to heaven with Allah. These terrorists could be waiting for the signal to strike us again. They have threatened us for many of years because they hate us. They hate us because they are a Muslim nation and we are a Christian nation. We will never be afraid of them because we have a lot of pride and we are very strong. Ever since the terrorist attacks, our country has been in a state of shock. We have lost so many innocent people and were not even expecting it. The day the incident happened, President George W. Bush said that we were probably going to go to war. That day there were many sad people and they were hoping that their family had made it out of the burning buildings. Almost every telivison station had pictures of all the damage. From what I could see, it looked like it was a movie or just a nightmare. There was a hole in the Pentagon where the airplane went right into the side of the Pentagon. After the World Trade Towers fell down, there was a lot of the shattered remains on the ground and there were over 3,000 people that died. Now, almost nine months later, our country is still recovering from this incident. All of the rubble has been cleaned up, but the memory of that day will be with Americans for a long time. I returned from my job a little before 9:00 am and had no knowledge of what was happening. Then the phone rang, it was my ex-husband. SCREAMING! "Go get the baby from school right now", he yelled. I asked why and his answer was "They just blew up the WTC". In complete shock and disbelief, I answered him "stop playing". He then told me to turn on the television. Then the line went dead. I jumped in my car, nearly crashing into oncoming cars, and got my 4 year-old baby from preschool. Her school happened to share the yard with The Armed Forces Reserve Base here in Amityville. I spent the rest of the day trying to contact my ex-husband (who works in the Woolworth building). It was a terrifying experience. I knew several people over in that area and was frantic as to who might have been in the trade center at that time. Well, THANK GOD! I finally heard from my ex. He never made it to work that day and was not near the WTC!! About two - three weeks weeks later we went and signed every banner we could at the site and I will never forget the pain and hurt that I felt. I will never forget this day, the victims, and their families. I just thank GOD every day that my ex-husband was unable to get to work that day, for whatever reason. I was in the bathroom putting in my contact lenses and started hearing voiced. I'd apparently only hit the Snooze button and not turned off the alarm. I heard the voices talking about a plane hitting a tower, and the first thought through my mind was that a local plane had hit a local cell phone tower. Then I heard the words "World Trade Center" and flew into a controlled frenzy. The nearest TV was in my living room, and I couldn't get to it quickly enough. I turned it on and could not believe my eyes. I ran up to my roommate's room and we watched for a couple minutes before walking to class. At that stage, we knew that it was a terrorist act, but didn't quite understand the breadth of the act. All the way to campus we talked about how bad it might be, and he didn't seem to think that it would be very bad, since it was early in the morning. This made sense and turned out to be partly true. Once reluctantly arriving at class, it soon became apparent that the instructor didn't realize what had happened. He'd likely been in his office and come direcly to class. As he taught, we were lucky to have laptops but couldn't surf very easily because all the news servers were getting slammed by millions of others doing the same. We didn't even know that the towers were down until after class, at which point one of my fellow students told the instructor what happened..he couldn't believe it. We walked over to the HUB and watched the two big-screen TVs amidst much crying and confusion. The visuals and inner emotions of the day are forever etched in me. I was trying to get our newborn son ready for his first doctor's visit. You see, our first child, Peter James was born the morning of Sept.6, 2001 and we had only come home two days beforehand. My husband just happened to turn on CNN, and as I was coming into the kitchen, I had heard him say,"Oh my God, honey, come in here! A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center!" at this point, we thought that a plane had accidentally crashed into the tower. As we watched in horror, we saw the second plane hit, and I think it was at that point that we both realised that this was no accident. I don't remember much of the commentary that the reporter was putting out, but I remember my husband, Kris, grabbing my hand to hold it tightly. I remember the tears streaming down my face, and I remember shaking in terror as my husband held me, thinking that this was a terible, horrible future we were staring in the face for ourselves, our brand new son, and the rest of the world. I remember asking my husband, "What if they hit here ?" And I remember Kris trying to tell me the unlikelyhood of that happening, but all I could think was that it seemed very unlikely to me that someone would be able to crash NYC and then the Pentagon. As we drove our PJ to the doctors office that day, I could not calm down, could not stop crying, thinking of all those innocent people who had gotten up that morning, put on their shoes and drank their coffee before heading off to their jobs, only to die a short while later, never knowing that THIS morning was going to be their last. I could not believe that so many innocent people had died on one day, throughout our nation,and that NO ONE warned them. I found it hard to believe that our government had no idea that this was going to happen. I still feel to this day, that our government should have done SOMETHING to save those people before this happened, espicially since it has come to light that OUR OWN GOV'T knew about this BEFOREHAND. In the days and nights following the attacks, I found myself clinging to our new son, and cuddling with my wonderful husband at every opportunity. During the days, I was in a daze, just going through the motions as I tried to absorb what had happened, and tried to contemplate what it would mean to our future as Americans. At night, I was filled with an unreasoning fear that someone was going to come and steal my baby in the night, and found that I was shaking in fear in my own bed as I lay there sleepless. In the end, my love for my family pulled me out of the daze I was in. I saw that life goes on, no matter what happens, until it is YOUR time to go. Now, my husband and I try to take each day at a time, and live each one as best as we can, knowing that each one could be the last and that life, as well as the time you have together, is too precious to waste. Now, instead of running around in pursuit of the almighty dollar, and in pursuit of expensive material things, we have stopped putting off things like camping trips, or sunsets, or staying up late just to talk and dream. No more is the phrase "I can do it tomorrow" or " Next year, we'll have more time" heard around our home. Tomrrow the grass can get cut. Next year we'll get a new car. Right now, today, is the time to watch P.J. discover that our Kitty is soft and hairy, or that dirt is yucky. Today is what we have and it is precious. Tomorrow is for dreaming towards. I pulled into parking space number 132 at my high school and walked up the hill to my first period class. I went to my locker, chose the correct book and then went into american government. I found my seat and began talking with a close friend. This is what I did every morning except unlike every other morning, the television in my classroom was on. Then, I (with the rest of the class) saw a replay of first plane as it smashed into the World Trade Center. It got very quite. At the exact moment, most of us were already at school and knew nothing of the attack. We just sat there. My friend and I stopped our conversation trying to comprehend what was going on. That day, it was as if school had stopped. When I would go into the hallway, I saw teachers frantically walking around talking to one another. Some of them were saying, "What are we going to do now? This is bad." Those teachers sure were not helping to make things better for the students. That afternoon, the Red Cross Youth Group began taking donations to send to New York. This deffinately made things better for me because it got my mind off of the attack. I want to Wal-Mart and bought things to put in the box to send to those who needed them. I gave blood the follwing week (as I am sure most Americans did). Our school, our community dealt with this together. When I graduated in May 2002, I felt closer to my peers than I ever had before. Now every time I see the American Flag, I always remember Sept.11, 2001. Honestly, I think I am still too uneducated to really understand what Sept.11 really means. Another teacher came over to my classroom to tell me that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane--I really thought nothing of it... just that a tragic accident had happened. About 20 minutes later she came back over and told me that the other World Trade Center had been hit and that there were reports of the Pentagon being hit as well. I immediately turned on my radio--the first thing that I heard was the sound of sirens and Peter Jennings' voice; he was talking about the Pentagon and how they couldn't get close to it to really see what had happened. My eyes scanned across the room and I saw the faces of our future, and my heart hurt for them. How was I to explain this to them? Their lives had changed wihtout even knowing it--their world had changed without even knowing it. I only said that men who hated our country took over some airplaines and hurt many people in New York and Washington D.C. Of course, the children had many questions, but I certainly didn't have the answers. I didn't know what REALLY went on til I went home that afternoon and turned on CNN and MSNBC. I hugged the children more than usual that day and told them that God loves them; their parents love them; I love them. We talked about freedom and what we are thankful for about America. At recess time, I listed to the radio--many of the children wanted to listen with me, but I would not allow it. They still needed to be children and to play and retain some of their innocence. Yesterday, September 11, 2002, I couldn't stop thinking about their faces when they heard the fire engine sirens blaring from the radio. Oh how I pray that the Lord will show mercy upon our country and will continue to bless us. My heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones or friends in this horrific tragedy. Even though I don't fully feel what those families feel, I still feel a great sense of loss. America does as well. That Tuesday hit close to home, in fact it directly impacted our family, friends, and community. Our lives will never be the same without out beloved Romero who was my only brother. His smile lit up the room and he did everything in his power to ensure the happiness of others. Being a typical older brother, e wanted the best for his sisters and always wanted my parents to live for the day. He proved to be a hero not only in our nation, but he was a hero to our community. He constantly wanted to pay favors forward by paying for someone?s tab or toll or just be gestures of generosity that are often lost in today?s world. I?ve seen Romeo grow from a 9-year old model to a basketball player to a surf and jeep lover to a man who served our nation with dignity and pride to an always-phenomenal brother. I am truly sorry that I will never be able to see him marry the love of his life, have more ?older-brother-younger sister talks?, see him have children and be able to spoil my nieces and nephews, retire from the Navy, and simply encourage me to do my best and see me grow up. The whole word cannot forget about 9/11. There are reminiscences everywhere about that day which a day does not go by when I do not think about it: As I work up one Tuesday morning, after a long night of fun and dancing, I thought that I would wake up to my daily routine-getting up fifteen minutes before class, just enough time to take a shower and grab a bite to eat before the long haul to English class. This particular morning was quite different. In fact, it changed my life. After I got out of bed, my roommate was still sleeping, so I proceeded to walk towards the end of the hall to find out what the weather was like outside. As I walked down the hall, I heard the blaring noise from many televisions and noticed that many of the doors to the dorms were opened. I thought that this was particularly strange because usually at 11 o?clock during the day, everyone is at class. I walked into a friend?s room and asked what all the ruckus was about and why everyone?s television was on. She responded. ?You haven?t heard? Two planes crashed into each of the World Trade Towers and a plane crashed into the Pentagon.? My first reaction to all this was, ?Did my brother go to work?? He started working at the Pentagon three months prior to the attack and worked on a shift schedule. I rushed to the telephone to call my mother to find out if my brother had gone to work that morning. At first I couldn?t get through to her due to circuits being busy in Washington, D.C. I tried using my cell phone, but that did not work. I then decided to use someone else?s phone and got through. My brother Romeo had talked to my mom at 8:20 that morning, about an hour and a half before the plane drove into the Pentagon. He called from work, which was off, because he usually did not call her from work, due to the ?top secret nature? of his job. He told my mother that my sister had left him lunch and wanted to say how much he appreciated it and like always, said he loved her. All of this shocked me and kept me in complete dismay all day. I sat in my dorm room and watched the news, waiting for the phone to ring and hoping that my brother had called to say he was alive. I could not let me eyes leave the television. Maybe I would see my brother helping outside of the Pentagon. I kept hop in my mind that the reason he could not call us to let us know that he was okay, was due to the downing of the all the phone lines in D.C. I paced around my room, down the hall and as dawn was approaching, I grew nauseous knowing that so much time had passed. The firefighters were still trying to extinguish the fire made by the jumbo-jet plane and the chance for survivors was diminishing by the second. I received a phone call around eight pm. It was my sister. She told me to pack my bags; she was on her way to come get me. I asked her it they had heard any news, but they had not. When I was picked up, the ride home was quiet. I did not want to go home, expecting to hear to worst-that my brother was dead. When I arrived home, there were over thirty people at my house. ?friends, family, and my brother?s crew. Everyone was in total shock, especially because his 24th birthday was three days after this terrible Tuesday. We learned later that night that my brother was one of seven who were ?officially missing? in his division. As the days passed, no new news arrived. We sat in agony for 11 days until we received the news that Romeo?s body had been identified. It brings a type of closure knowing that he is resting in peace. Even though he is not physically with me today, his memories and smile will always be in my heart. It is truly a deep loss to those who were unable to e touched by my brother. When it seems like we begin to move towards accepting what has happened, things begin to surface, which makes it m much more difficult to deal without my brother. This has undoubtedly tested the love and will of our family and the unending support from everyone. We have been able to cope, given that there is nothing we can do to get our Romeo back. There are not enough words to express how much friends, family and complete strangers have come to our aid. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever done-I?ve never lost a good friend, never have buried an immediate relative-I?ve done both since September 11th. As all the other people who have met Romeo know that he was a precious jewel and shined his smile, love, and generosity all over. I will miss Romeo and can?t describe how much. Tell us your story: I had just arrived to start my work out when the woman who lives next door came in to tell us that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I was surprised because I had worked at the World Trade Center on the 106th floor and couldn't believe a plane had gotten close enough to crash into it. I immediately got in my car and rushed home intime to see on the Today show that a second plane had crashed into the other tower and then I immediately knew it was a terrorist act. I got on the phone and called or should say tried to call all the family members I knew who worked around the area. Try as I might I couldn't get anyone on the phone and started to panic. Luckily, they started to call me to let me know they were OK and trying to get out of the area as soon as possible. The next call I got was from my Mom who now resides in Italy - she was in a panic as well and wanted to make sure we were all OK. I felt such deep pain and sorrow for the people who were lost in those buildings - still to this day it seems so unbelievable, even though my family and I have been to the site of the WTC to see the gapping hole. But through all the pain and sorrow I am glad to have seen New Yorkers come together and help eachother and prove to the world once again that we are a city of love, bravery and strength and we can survive whatever our enemies dish out.
