Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 in Boston dawned a beautiful day. It was a wonderful late summer day as I headed to work that morning. I thought to myself what a great day it would be to have off. As I walked down Boylston Street to work, I looked up and saw a jet flying out of Logan Airport, flying low over South Boston and the South End. I wonder now if I caught a glimpse of American Airlines flight 11 or United Airlines flight 175 on its way to its doom. After sitting at my desk for 45 minutes, I got up to use the mens room. While I was there, I heard someone mention to someone else, rather non-chalantly, that he heard a report that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center in New York. At the time, I thought, as I am sure everyone else who first heard it, that perhaps it was a small Cessna. I remember that a WWII bomber had once flown into the Empire State Building in 1945. As I walked back to my desk, I noticed a large group of people gathered around the plasma television on our floor. I walked over and realized the magnitude of what happened. There was a gaping hole in the North Tower with smoke and flame billowing out of it. We had no sound on the television, so we couldn?t hear what was happening?just look and wonder among ourselves. Suddenly, there was a huge explosion. One person in our group said, ?I think I just saw another plane hit the other tower.? From the angle we were watching on television, unless you looked quick, none of us, except this one person, saw the second plane. I remember saying, ?No way?it has to be jet fuel from the first plane or some secondary explosion in the North Tower.? Moments later someone who was listening on a radio confirmed that indeed it was a second jet that had hit the South Tower. And at that moment, I am sure everyone in that room instantly knew that this was a deliberate act of terrorism! Since there was no sound available on the television, everyone who had a radio in the office turned them on. We got much more information from them than from what we could see on television. I immediately called my girlfriend at work. Shoot!?she was in a meeting all morning. I left her a message to call me IMMEDIATELY. I also left her an email to call me ASAP! I then called my parents; it was about 9:15 now. My father answered and I told him to turn on the television?.NOW! He started to make inquiries but I told him to turn on the TV?..all his questions were answered by the sight he saw. We spoke a bit about what was happening and I told him what I knew so far, I told him I would call later and hung up. I went back to the plasma television and watched a little more, thinking to myself, ?Those poor people in those buildings?.God help them.? It may sound strange now but I actually tried to concentrate on getting some work down, but it was difficult. Radios all over the office kept an up to the second account of what was happening, The reports on the radio started coming in minute after minute?.all NYC airports shut down, all bridges and tunnels into NYC closed. An underlying sense of panic started sweeping the office. If it happened there, what is there to prevent it from happening here in Boston. I don?t think anyone even thought about work the rest of that morning, everyone just wanted to know what the HECK was going on. Of course, all sorts of reports started coming in ? an explosion at the State Department, a car bomb on Washington Mall, the White House and the Capitol being evacuated. Some was true and of course as we found out later some were false, but it simply added to the growing sense of panic at the office. A kind of mass hysteria started sweeping the office as any bit of news was twisted from the actual facts. Someone started saying that the MBTA and commuter rails had shut down. I called the ?T? and discovered this was not true. I had to literally stand on my desk and announce that the T was running and even tell one man to stop saying the T was shut down and not spread that kind of information. But that is the kind of panic that was beginning to take hold. And if it was happening here in this office?..what was going on in the rest of the country??in New York? Then reports came in that the Pentagon had been hit by American Airlines flight 77?.and pandemonium set in. People to my left and right were wondering what to do next. Do we get the heck out of here before a plane hits our building? Maybe It?s over? How do you know? There could be dozens of hijacked planes out there. I?m a pretty levelheaded guy, but I just remembering thinking, ?What the HELL is going on?? It was difficult not to panic, to give into the fear. Some people were distraught, others outwardly calm, but I?m sure everyone had the same thought?..Whats next?! While we were all thinking what to do next, we continued to monitor the radio and television. Nothing but bad news rolled in as our trepidation grew with each report. All flights in the U.S have been grounded?all incoming flights to the U.S diverted to Canada?.the South Tower has collapsed?another airplane has crashed in Pennsylvania (United Airlines flight 93)?people fleeing Manhattan and Washington?the North Tower collapses?.you can understand why people were in a PANIC?everywhere in the US. Personally, I thought we are at war?that moment! Where would the next attack come from? Airplane? Car Bomb? The imagination ran wild. Shortly after the North Tower collapsed, my girlfriend called and said 2 words, ?Whats happening?!? She had just had her meeting cancelled by an officer of her company who told them the WTC buildings had been hit?and of course they had a thousand questions. I told her all I knew and she relayed the information to her co-workers. I told her that we may be evacuating our building soon and I wanted her to leave and go home with me as well. The stock market had shut down , so no work would be completed that day. We agreed that we would both leave and I told her to meet me at Back Bay Station. Although I advised her against it, she thought it would be best to walk over to Copley Square (a little over a mile). We finally did get the notice to leave the building at about 11:00 AM. From what I could hear on the radio, everyone was trying to get out of Dodge. I tried calling my parents again and there was a noticeable delay on the phone before I could get a line. Obviously, everyone in America who had a phone was using it that day. And the Internet??.Forget it!?I couldn?t even log on the volume was so high! I got through to my parents and told them we were heading home. From what they heard on television, most of Boston was being evacuated. I told them I would call as soon as we got home. Since I knew it would take about my girlfriend a good 20 minutes to reach me, I meandered about trying to figure out what was the best course of action. Obviously, the commuter rail would be the fastest way home. But then I began to think, what if some terrorist with a bomb decides to blow himself up on the train or the platform. That?s when I really began to become tense. That this could happen anywhere, at anytime. I went out to Copley Square at 11:30 and immediately noticed how quiet it was. Of course, no planes were flying out of Logan, but I noticed a definite pall in the air. No loud voices, no honking horns that you would normally hear in Copley Square. It was as if everyone was observing an extended moment of silence to those who had fallen. My girlfriend showed up and we hugged and headed for the train station. I didn?t tell her my worries (until after we got home), no sense panicking her. As we walked to the train, I told her everything I had heard and knew. She is pretty emotional and was getting upset by what I told her so I changed the subject. Luckily for us when we got to Back Bay Station, they had added extra trains, so we were able to leave immediately. It was a quiet ride home, with people speaking in hushed tones. Once, we got home, we watched the continuous coverage of the disaster. My girlfriend at times cried as she watched, I think I was too stunned to feel anything. We both called our respective parents to let them know we had made it home alright. At about 6:30, my girlfriend received a HUGE shock. Her best friend?s brother in law had been on Flight 11. Now, the tragedy really hit home. I later received a call from my boss to tell me not to come into work the next day, as the stock market would be closed. We talked about the day?s events for a while and expected to be back to work the following day. I watched the news until early in the morning, maybe hoping I would wake up from this national nightmare. My girlfriend expressed hope that maybe some survivors would be found in the WTC. I grimly replied that no one would be found alive in that carnage. But the day?s events really didn?t hit me until they started reporting that scores of firefighters had perished that day. The enormity of what had happened September 11 now set in. This was no nightmare or horror movie, this was very real. I wonder how all this will play out. It?s too early now to know the historical impact of all this. How will our children and grandchildren be affected? Will the reverberations of this attack be felt for decades? How will historians look at how we as a country reacted to this event? Fifty years from now, what will people say about this time in history? A hundred years from now, how will this event be remembered? I remember all the WW II vets saying to never forget Pearl Harbor. Obviously, we did forget and the result was another sneak attack even worse in scope. Will we learn from this? Or will we forget this moment and not be prepared for such acts in the future? Only the years to come will tell us that. But for me, as I write this nearly one year later (September 7, 2002), it is a beautiful day outside. I couldn?t help noticing how much it reminded me of September 11. And I can?t help thinking, that until the day I die, whenever there is another beautiful day, I?ll stop and think to myself??This is just like September 11......" The flight that left from Boston,Logan airport flew right over my school.It was weird cause i dont think any flights came our way . Although I personally did'nt know any one that died that day I do know people that did. How this story touched my life was my husband was on a plane September 10th from Syracuse NY to Sacramento CA on what was only supposed to be a three day trip. I remember how my then six year old son came home from school asking me about the plane crash and saying "is daddy all bloody" it broke my heart and had to remind him that he talked to daddy last night that he was already in California. I can only imamage how hard it was for those familys who really had to deal with that situation. Finally a week later when my husband did come home it was so wonderful to be able to put my arms around him and tell him I Love You! By the time I went to bed, the sun was up and people were going to work. About 1:00 PM I was awakened from a sound sleep by the telephone. The caller was a drinking buddy whose sense of humor often borders on the absurd. He also knows that I am nocturnal, so some calls are thinly disguised practical jokes. He told me that terrorists had knocked down both World Trade Center towers. I answered "yeah, right, couldn't you find a better excuse to wake me up?" He responded, "Jim, turn on the television and I'll call back in a half hour." I asked which station. When he said "any," I began to realize that something was very wrong. I was a few minutes late for class but the professor had not arrived yet. After sitting there in class a few minutes a friend of mine came in and said that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center Towers. All I could think of was the people in the building and their families. What would happen to the children whose parents did not recover from this awful tragedy? What about the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, and grandfathers? Later that afternoon my mother called me at work to tell me that my brother and sister-in-law were fine. I said, "What?" not knowing that they had planned a trip to Manhattan after visiting Niagra Falls. This was their 2nd or 3rd yr anniversary September 11, 2001. They had planned to go to the towers on this particular day but for some reason, only God may know why, they decided to stay around the Niagra Falls area. I thank God that they were not there. Someone was really watching out for them that day. As for the friends and families of the individuals who did not make it, may God look over them all the days of their lives. Tell us your story: when i first heard of the attacks i didn't even know what everybody was talking about, everybody said "watch the TV! watch the TV! but the princaple had sent out the rule that all tv's were to be turned off. All day i heard exaggerated stories of "fleets of airplanes" to "An armed invasion" and it was not until one of my teachers had the sense to turn on the radio tht i learned what was really happenning. i was appalled that something like that could happen, and sick to my stomach in fear for for NeW York Relatives. As i went through the rest of the day, sometimes a radio was on, often it was off, and people wondored what was yet to come. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in a meeting and was told by my supervisor that a plane had hit the WTC. We turned on the big screen tv and watched CNN recap the events, we then watched the second plane fly into the 2nd tower. We all knew then that we were under attack. We contemplated on ending the meeting because we all worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and weren't sure of what would be expected. We were then told that a plane had flown into the Pentagon and only blocks away from the Capitol and the White House we all grew cautious of what to do next. My father works in Crystal City and often engages in meetings at the Pentagon, which caused me to panic, not knowing if he had been at one of those meetings that day. I shocked myself because my father and I had only renewed our relationship recently. I later found out that he was in Atlanta on a business trip. I realized then that whatever we didn't have in the past was irrelevant. I knew then that I really did love my father and wanted him alive as long as possible. I am grateful to God that he spared my family and friends, but prayful to Him for those that weren't so fortunate. I stood there in shock & disbelief & was hoping that the informer will start laughing,but it was not meant to be a joke .I went running up to watch the t.v.LOts of people were glued to the t.v.As i watched one tower was on fire& before i could comprehend the situation another plane sruck the other tower & as we watched both towers came tumbling down.It was moment of shock,anger &frustration.I spend rest of the day tending to patients &the details kept coming in.I kept day dreaming & fantacizing that it was not real and/or if any thing could have been done to avert it.Even today i dont have answars,I wonder if good will ever defeat evil. let us keep the hope alive.Although i did not loose any blood realtive in this tragedy ,but after one year i still mourn their death .they were all children of america &we will never forget their ultimate sacrifice. I sent my boys on the school bus and my husband came home from a long night shift at work. I was in the bedroom watching another program on television when all of a sudden my husband yelled at me from the living room to see something on the T.V. in the family room where he was at and what I saw was a nightmare that was to be 9-11-2001. I was in a daze all day I was scared for my boys I wanted to pick them up from school. I was afraid to go outside to check my mail. This was the most scariest time I've been in. I wondered who would hate us so much. In the days following 9-11 I turned to God and asked him to be with the ones who really needed him and that I would do my part in being brave and help those who needed it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had some appointments with some landscapers to get quotes at one of my properties the morning of Sept. 11th. For some reason that morning, I had decided to shut the radio off and enjoy the silence as I made my way to the property. When I got there I decided to pop my head in and say hi to the receptionist and to let her know I was there if they needed anything. But as I made my way to her desk I heard Bob and Tom on the radio, but they sounded different. If you know Bob and Tom they are slapstick comics who are hardly serious about anything, lots of laughter and banter. But what I heard that morning was a solumn and gravely somber comentary. I asked the receptionist what was going on and she told me a plane had struck one of the World Trade Center buildings. I was in shock at the misfortune, but at that point no one was sure if it was an accident or not. Unfortunately, I had to go meet my appointment so I was unable to listen to the events as they unfolded. As soon as the meeting was over I immediately went inside to the conferance room where there was a television. I was in amazement when I saw BOTH buildings were now smoking. They played replay after replay of the second airplane and I couldn't believe my eyes! What was going on?! And there are two other planes that've changed corse?! This can't be real! I then had to meet my second appointment but I sat in my car every opportunity I got. I called the office, I called my husband, my mother...to see if they had heard the news. Everyone was glued to their T.V.s and radios. I went back to the office and unfortunatly, you cannot get radio reception where our offices are located so we spent the rest of the day on the internet trying to find out all we could. I called the daycare to see what the procedures were for picking my son up and what procations they were taking. That night my husband, 3 year old son and I watched replay after replay, footage after footage. people running, people screaming and, sadly, people jumping out of those buildings. My son asked why the "airplane crashed the buildings" and the only thing I could come up with to explain what was happening is that "their are some people who don't like us and they do bad things sometimes". I don't know if that was the correct response, but it was the best I could do to put the magnitude of such a horrific event into words for a three year old. I remember how eerily quiet the skies were too. I live about 5 minutes from the Indianapolis International Airport. There are planes coming and going every few minutes on a normal day, and it's a sound you get used to, to the point where you don't even notice it, but that day...it was so quiet...too quiet. The absence of the noise only seemed to make the silence louder. But I thanked the Lord above that my family was safe and prayed for those who had loved ones involved. It just made my realize that life is unpredictable. You never know when "this time" will be the last time. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of Septemer 11, 2001 I had just finished voting for the primary. My son and I had an appointment near the Brooklyn Bridge. We got on the #7 train to Manhattan. We were on the train for approximately 20 minutes out of Main Street, Flusing when we noticed that most of the passengers were looking out of the window. We were curious at what was going on so we joined them. At that moment we realized that one of the Twin Towers were on fire. I immediately pulled my cell phone out to call my brother who was a port authority police officer to warn him and to also see if he was alright. I didn't get a reponse. I tried two more times, again with no success. After my son and I reached our destination we came out of the subway. When we got to the street we looked up at the twin towers. That's when we realied that there was a plane in the building. My heart beated so fast. I said to myself, that this was not good. I again attempted to call my brother because I was really scared now. Again no answer. We then proceded to our destination. We were turned away and sent home. As we were approaching towards the subway, one of the buildings started falling down. My son and I ran through the streets as fast as we could, crying out for my brother. I was so scared and nervous. All I thought about was my brother. I felt a big gust from my heart, and I knew in my heart that my brother was in that building. We tried so hard to get out of Manhattan but there was no way. As we're walking towards the bridge, that's when the second building fell. Taxi's were full, buses wouldn't stop. We were then directed by the police to walk over the 59th Street bridge. After several hours, we finally made it home. We ten proceded to call my brother over and over. Again with no response. Two weeks after the attack my family and I got word that my brother's body was recovered. It was the most devastating thing you can imagine. It's been so difficult for us. We were such a close family. When you seen one of us, you would see us all. We miss him so much. He left beind a very close family. He left one brother and four sisters. He also left behind 3 children who reides in Texas. There were so many lives lost that day. I feel really bad for the families who didn't retrieve their loved ones remains. At least my family and I have some closer. I would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers. God Bless America. My immediate reaction was asking if the news media had said if it was a private plane that hit it and what the weather conditions were like. I was extremely shocked to hear that it had been a commercial airliner. I called my husband at his office to tell him what had happened and one of his co-worker's brought in a tv. We were talking when all of a sudden he stated that one of the buildings had collapsed. I went to CNN's web page and there was a picture of the first tower gone. We talked awhile longer when my husband blurted out "oh my God, the other tower just went." A chill came over me, and then dread thinking what was going to happen next. I worked by RDU airport and then noticed that we couldn't hear any planes taking off, that's probably when they grounded all planes. I then started to worry that something might happen next on the West Coast where my parents lived so I called them right away. I spoke with my Mom and Dad, and my Mom seemed really scared on the phone, however, little did I know that this was going to be the last time that I would talk to her because we lost her two days later to heart failure. The worst part was due to the attack all flights were cancelled and I was not able to get to California until that Saturday. It took me 16 hours to get there, and it was a little scary seeing all of the security around the airports. We drove across country because my Mom's wishes were to be buried in Michigan where she was from. The one thing that will always stand out in my mind is seeing all of the patriotism that we saw while driving. There was not one city that we went through that didn't have some type of banner, red, white and blue decorations or American flags hanging from the over passes. And the number of cars, houses and businesses that were also showing their patriotism was also incredible. I hope that out of this tragedy we have learned to become one people, regardless of race, as true Americans, and to hold strong to our belief in freedom, to always hold in our hearts and to never forget those who were lost on that dark day of September 11, 2001. When I heard the second tower was hit I knew something was going on,I automatically thought the end of the world.The only thing I could think of was my children , if it was going to be the end I want my kids with me, all 7 of them. I went to pick up my children from all thier schools. We watched the t.v. and I tell you I could'nt sleep for weeks. I somehow thought I could'nt take life for granted and neither could my kids. I have till this day, a heavy heart for our loss, yet I'm so proud of my people , for we are a strong people. Early that morning, I was preparing to go to court for a client. I watched the News and the Today show as I usually do every day in the morning. One of the Twin Towers in NYC had caught fire and was engulfed in smoke. All of a sudden like a flash before my eyes, a figure moving swiftly which looked like a jet airliner went into the other Twin Tower. Both Towers were soon covered in smoke. People in the streets below acted with both dismay and panic.In a few minutes right before my unbelieving eyes, both Towers crumbled to the ground in a plume of dust and smoke.Later, other news accounts came in telling of the other hijackings and what happened at the Pentagon. We were under attack. Later on that day, My wife and I put up our American flag at full mast in defiance of the terorists, sending them message: Come and take it if you dare! That's all I remember. I kept thinking to myself that it was some kind of new action packed movie that was coming out. But then they just kept talking about it and then the oter plane hit. I could't believe my eyes. I grab a hold of my kids and held tight, my daughter who was 3 in a half, turns 4 on the 19th of sept kept asking me what all the smoke and fire was from. How could I explain to my daughter what was happening, when I really did't even understand it my self. I did the best I could. When the tower started collapsing I prayed to GOD please help the people. Why did this happen. One year later I live each day as if it could be the last. I have become closer to my family and friends, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't tell my kids how much they mean to me and how much I Love them. I pray for the people that have lost loved ones in this tragic event and for the kids that lost parents. I thought it was just a small wreck but I was wrong. I heard about it and still didn't belive. When I went home and saw on tv the video of it, I cried for more than a week. I saw the pictures and the horrible images. I couldn't cope with it that the people who had been killed had felt just as safe and secure, like nothing could happen to them because their lives were insicnificent, as I had felt at school. I saw what happened to them, and I was incredibly depressed. School was out for a while, and when I went in to school eventually, some kids were still crying. They had probably lost someone in the attack. It was horrible to see them crying, and sometimes I cried too. My name is Ellen George and I was 11 when the accident happened, and I am now 13. Tell us your story: On September 11th, I was off from work sick and was sitting on the couch in my living room looking at the Maury Show on tv, then there was this "Special Report". At first it was reported that there had been an accident at the World Trade Center, maybe a helicopter or a small plane had accidently hit one of the towers. As I continued to watch the Towers and the people hanging out of the windows waving for help, then, I noticed this plane flying rather low and I thought to myself that plane is flying too low for a city with towering buildings. Then I saw what that plane did. I remember refocusing my eyes and searching my memory to see if what just occurred really happened. Then the replay. I knew it was no accident. I felt the horror, the pain, and all those souls crying out. I was confused and my chest started hurting and there was this big lump in my throat. I stood up and looked at the tv as if it were something vial. I asked God, what are these people doing? I walked and paced and wrung my hands. I cried so hard and I asked God to make this stop. I kept thinking over and over these people don't deserve this. How could someone be so evil to think of doing something like this. I asked the Lord to hold those dear people in His Holy Arms.
