Most of us said "Yeah, right", because this person was always saying outrageous things. But then a supervisor said the same thing, and we managed to get a radio going. People were shocked and very quiet. Then the television in the cafeteria was turned on and we saw that it was true. "Who would do a thing like that?" "What the hell is going on?" "Pray that those people get out safely." Then the second plane hit. Some people were sobbing, because they had relatives in New York and they weren't sure where they worked. Then the plane hit the Pentagon, and the whole place got even quieter. President Bush was just over in Sarasota! Did that mean that our area might be in danger, too? When I got home and actuall saw the footage of the towers and the Pentagon and the crash site in Pennsylvania, the tears just rolled down my face. Even though I didn't personally know anyone there, I still felt sorrow and outrage that terrorism could strike so close to home. To this day, I still feel that outrage and the sorrow--for thost that lost loved ones and for the courage and bravery of our police, firefighters and emergency personnel. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work for the federal government in a small, rural Appalachian town. We had no TV at work. My husband was at home and when the first plane hit, he called to tell me what he had seen on TV. I assumed this was a plane that had somehow gone astray. Minutes later, he called back telling me of the second plane and how it was witnessed by the news media and people in the area. The third call informed us that the Pentagon had been hit. Our District Office immediately called and told us to leave our office at once. I began rounding my family up. I knew if America was being attacked, I wanted my loved ones with me. My 2 year old granddaughter, Hannah, was a few blocks away at day care. I had an overpowering urgency to get to her. Once there I found the day care workers glued to the TV watching in horror the events. Hannah had already been picked up by her mother, who is a college student. Hannah had cut her leg in an accident and today was the day the stitches were removed. They indicated she would be back. I planned to rush to the doctor's office and find my daughter and granddaughter. At that moment she pulled in. I remember her jumping from her van, asking me what was wrong. She stated later there was a look of horror on my face that she had never seen before. I told her what had happend and that our office had been evacuated. Her 7 year old son was at school and we decided she should go get him. My other two small grandsons were at the school, also, and we agreed that she would pick up all three boys and take them to my house. A lot of parents were panicking and picking up their chilren, as well. We sat in front of the TV most of the day until my son-in-law got off work. I wanted my family with me. Since the kids were getting restless, we decided to take them back out for lunch and try to create some normalcy in their lives as they were seeing things on TV they had never seen before and we knew it was upsetting. I remember President Kennedy's address to the nation and how scared I was at the threat of nuclear war. That same feeling was with me on September 11th. Is this it? Are we all going to die? We prayed for the Lord to guide us and our leaders and the people directly involved in this horrific attack. Our lives will never be the same. Some things absolutely lost their importance to me. I now live with the notion that tomorrow may never come. Whatever menial chore I am doing may not matter tomorrow. We have become closer as a family, celebrating birthdays, happy occasions, and just loving each other. Today is all we have. I wonder how many people said goodbye to their loved one that morning and had no idea it was the last one. How many had an argument and never got to say "I'm Sorry". I was listening to the morning news and talk shows that I would normally listen to. They interrupted the show to report that "a small plane" had just crashed into the WTC, and that details would follow. I thought to myself that some poor soul who was alive an hour before was dead. I wondered if they (the pilot) had had any indication that they would die that day, 9-11. I called my wife and asked her to turn on the news and watch. The Dallas - Fort Worth ABC affiliate I listen to, cut to a NYC sister station who had a reporter near by and was already interviewing eyewitnesses. I was still under the impression that it was a small plane. The reporter was speaking to someone when in the back ground you could hear gasps and assorted chatter, then the reporter followed with "Oh my god.....ANOTHER plane just smashed into the other tower!" It was then that I knew these were no "accidents". This marked for me the 3rd public incident of my life that I will always remember, and remember where I was. It is behind the assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan ( I was in 5th period band); The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster ( I was at home, watching the first televised launch that I had the opportunity to see); and now this.It makes me sad to think others would wish harm on the greatest country that has ever existed. On the morning of Sept. 11th, the other fourth grade teacher ran into my room. Her sister had called and said a plane had hit the world trade center. We were horrified. Then a few minutes later she ran back in and said another one had hit and the pentagon and the officials new it was terrorists. I resisted the urge to turn on the TV. I had 24 little 9-10 year olds who Ii was responsible for and I didn't want to scare them. The teachers gathered out in the hall and were talking in scared hushed tones. "Who would do this?" was repeated several times. I told them i just was sure it was Osama Bin Laden. They told me a day or two later that it was interesting that I was "right on the money." When my students went to lunch, I went back to my room and turned on the TV. I honestly had cold chills as Ii watched the footage of the planes hitting the towers. I choked back a sob, as tears ran down my face. After lunch we were informed that one of our kindergarten teachers had left the building; you see she had a sister who worked in the Pentagon. Fortunately, later that evening the sister called to say she had made it out all right. I think the toughest part of the day was staying calm for the students, and wondering if it was the beginning of many attacks. And in the following days how I would discuss with them the horrible images they would see on the news that evening. Of course that day I went to work with an empty tank. I spent that afterbnoon waiting in line for gas, like many other frightened Americans. I don't ever want to be that scared again. I attend Barker Central High School, which is located in a small town in Niagara County, New York. Barker is mostly farmland; in fact I live on a one hundred thirty six-acre vegetable farm. September 11th was like any normal day in my community. However what was about to happen shook our little town of Barker. The incredible evil that unleashed on that fateful day changed our community forever. I woke up at 6:00 Am and got ready for school. The school bus arrives at my house around 7:00 Am. It picks my brother Charles, my sister Mary and myself up for school every morning. The bus ride was normal. There were the noisy kids that sit in the back and the kids that try to sleep sitting around the middle and front of the bus. Coincidently, my sister and I sit in the middle of the bus. As the bus ride continued on its usual course we naturally picked up my friend Melissa Moore. The bus ride takes around 40minutes to travel from my house to Barker High School. When I got off my bus I met my friend Nick and we walked into the school together. When we entered the school I left Nick because my locker is in another section of the building. After I dropped off all my things I walked back to talk to my friends. I waited with them until the first bell rang. Once the bell rang Shaun, Ben and I all walked down to the Gym. When Gym was over Shaun, Ben and I left and went back to our lockers. I waited for Nick and we went to our next class, which was Band. In Band we were practicing our songs for our concert that was coming up. We had just finished our last song and the bell rang. I walked out of band and I went to my locker and got my things for my next class. After I grabbed my folder for keyboarding I started to run down the halls because I was going to be late for my class. I noticed that all the teachers had there television's on and they were watching the news. I really didn't think anything of it because I was trying to get to class. As the bell was ringing I entered the room and sat down in my normal seat, which was right next to Joe. I looked up at the television because my teacher had it on. I immediately then asked what was going on. She said that two "747's had just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. I could not believe what was happening, I thought to my self who would do such evil. As I kept watching the news they were showing the second airplane crashing into the second twin tower. It showed the airplane coming from the east side of the building and when it hit there was a huge explosion. I did not think anything else could happen. Then they said on the news that a third 747 crashed into the side of the Pentagon. By this time mostly every person in our school was absolutely terrified. In my opinion what these people did to our nation was horrific and wrong. Also I think that the people that lost a loved one in this tragedy have it the hardest because they have to wake up every morning and experience the disaster over and over again. We had just started seeing our first patients of the day, when one of them came in and told us that one of the trade towers had been hit by a plane, but the news didn't have all of the details yet. At first we thought it may have been a small personal plane that had flown off it's flight course and were sorry to hear of the accident. We had no idea of the real tragedy until a few minutes later when all of the radio stations started reporting on what happened. We were all stunned! Then the second plane hit and everyone in our office was paralyzed. After this we all knew nothing was going to get done that day. We are located near a Circuit City store and some of us went in to watch what was going on. As I stood in the store and saw the towers collaspe the reality of all of those people dying hit me and I couldn't control my pain for all of the lives lost. I stood there among dozens of others sobbing at the tragedy. Once the towers collasped, we called all of our appointments for the day to cancel them and went home to be with our families. As the day went on and the other planes crashed, we couldn't take our eyes off the television. Once we found out these were all terrorist attacks we were fearful for our family around the country. Who knew where they were going to strike next? Living in Richmond, we're only a few hours from Washington, D.C. and several other major cities that could be targeted for terrorism. My family is on the west coast and was dreadfully worried about our safety. I, however, was just as worried about them, as they live close to a major west coast city and about an hour from a nuclear power plant. That day changed many of our lives forever. I have always been proud to be an American, but to see Americans pull together and support each other after this national tragedy made me even more so. I lived out of the country for a few years and took some abuse about being an American, but people knew not to go too far, because we Americans are a very proud people and aren't about to let anyone tread on our great country. This tragedy may have been a wake-up call that we may not be as indestructible as we thought we were. It has, however, shown that Americans love their country, each other, and what the United States stands for. Our true American spirit is more evident than ever! We mourn the loss of the people who died on September 11 and pray for the families who have suffered. There is no room for forgiveness for those that caused this tragedy. We have let everyone know that we are still the greatest country in the world and will not take this ordeal lying down. I am more proud to be an American than ever before and love this great country that we are blessed to live in. The morning of September 11 changed all of that. I sat in 3rd period physics class with my friends and fellow classmates, shocked and confused by the events which were taking place as we watched the television. After the first plane hit the World Trade Center, I thought it was over; we all thought it was a devastating accident. But no. The second plane hit, and then the Pentagon. Then, later on, Pennsylvania. I knew America was under attack, and my care free life as a teenager would take a turn for the worst. However, as horrible and traumatic the events of that day and the weeks to follow, one thing got me through. My faith in the Lord my Savior, and the many testimonies of faith given by survivors of the World Trade Center and the courageous rescue workers, widows, and many others. Someone had the nerve to destruct our nation with our own planes. I couldn't tell if I was more angry or upset. That whole day, all I did was try and get a hold of my family up north, and we all know how impossible that was. I was thinking of all the worst, but hoping for the best. 3 days later, I finally got a phone call through, and it turned out that everyone in my family was alright. One of my Uncles, who worked in the trade center was overseas on a business trip. Another uncle who is a firefighter for Lower Manhattan was fine, but most of his ladder company was not that lucky. And my cousin, who is a cop for the NYPD, was able to make it out with only minor injuries...his partner was not that lucky. That day is definitely a day that will live in infamy with all of us...especially my genereation. For my grandparents, they will always remember where they were and what they were doing at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. For my parents, they will always remember exactly where they were when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. But there is no doubt in my mind that I will always remember that moment when every emotion possible rushed through my body. I've come to believe that one of the only things that got me through that day were my friends. I was unable to get in touch with my family, and that is the scariest feeling in the world. September 11, 2001 was a horrific and tragic day for our nation. And no matter how much hatred we feel towards opposing nations, and although it greatly upsets me that it took something like this to bring our nation together, all I hope for is a stand of unity and a sense of peace...at least today. My heart bleeds for everyone out there that lost a loved one. Just know that they, in their own way, served their country well and died an incredible heroic death. It was completely unfair, but they will forever be heroes in my mind. Love and peace to all. We had a break and I saw all the teachers gathering around in the hall way talking. I wanted to know what they were all talking about so I walked over and listened to them. I heard one of them say, "a plane just flew right into the World Trade Center." I thought she was talking about a dream she had that night or something. Little did I know. When I watched the T.V. my heart was in my stomach. I felt like I knew every person that was hurt or killed in New York and Washington. Even though I thankfully didn't know anybody that was hurt. We receive a call to turn on the television there were reports of a plane hitting the World Trade Center. We all thought there was no way that could happen so we all thought it was a joke. We had all the children to sit down for their routine snack time while the director went into a seperate room and turned on the television. To our disbielf the north tower was in deed on fire. The childrens laughter and talking in the next room brought us back to reality and we began our plans on how to keep the children safe and calm. We had no idea what the television was about to show us. Yet another plane and this one had hit the south tower. We all thought no that was just a replay of the video. Until the news reporters all began to tell the horrifing story of the second plane. The children were scheduled to have their outside play time. We had made our decisions, let the children play outside but keep all eyes and ears open. Parents began calling to question if we had heard and to ask if their children were safe. Many began to pick up their children and go home yet none of us knew what was going to happen next. We were all sitting there... and Mrs.Cannon told us she just heard about the attacks on the radio. I didn't know what to think but I was in total shock. No one knew it was coming. My class didn't know what she was going to tell us. The whole day we just waited for more news about it all. It was hard to understand it especially since I was in a school and couldn't just turn on the news and listen about it. The attacks have changed my life. I was at work and the doctor i worked for told us of the first plane and we couldn't believe such a terrible accident could have taken place but as we turned on the television just before the second plane hit we watched in horror. As we watched the second plane hit it felt as though someone kicked you as hard as they could in the stomach. I was so scared and confused with what was going on I was frozen. After realizing the great amount of loss in lives we were gonna have and hearing of the other 2 planes crashing the world felt like it had just stopped. My first instinct after i was able to move my feet was to run as fast as I can and get my daughter and hold on to her as tightly as I could. Even though we were not directly involved with losses the pain was sharp in your heart. I felt dazed for the entire rest of that day and I creid for several months later. Even though no one I knew perished that day I still felt a deep sorrow for the thousands of people who did lose someone. As time went on and things started going back to as much a normal state as possible, the pain in my heart stayed. To this day I cry and I pray for those who were lost and for those who lost someone. This event is something truly hard to understand because it was senseless. We lost many mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters all because we stand for freedom and it made no sense. I don't think we will ever fully understand why this happened to our country nor do I think we will ever fully recover. One thing I do know for sure is I hold my child a bit closer and hug her a bit tighter and I never ever forget to say I Love You to anyone I care about. To those who lost loved ones on that horrific day we will never be able to say we know how you feel or what you are going through, but we can say our prayers will always be with you and your losses will never be in vain because we will never forget. I asked him what was such the rush. He said that something happened in New York and that it was really serious. I didn't have a TV there, but she told me what was happening and I immediately turned on the radio to 101.1 to listen in. I knew we were going to war and called my fiance at work. He worked at the airport in Houston, Texas. He is a Marine, reserves. He said they were watching on the TV in the break room. I was so afraid, for our country, for my children, and for him. Tell us your story: I'd been in the office for a couple of hours already, and some of the other members of staff were just arriving for the day, when someone walked in to say a plane had hit one of the twin towers. The first impression most of us had was that it was a small private plane, thrown off course by a stricken pilot. So we proceeded on with our day. When she returned a few minutes later to say the other tower had been hit, our impression of the event began to change--obviously this wasn't a coincidence--and yet the scale seemed fairly small. It was inconceivable that this could be something large enough to do serious damage. I called my wife (a New York native), who was still at home and asked her to pop on the television. The horror in her voice as she saw the first images suggested that this was far more than a couple small planes. The staff variously turned on radios and small television sets, and began searching for information on the Internet. The initial fragmentary reports of evacuations from various buildings in Washington--including the Capitol, which is just four blocks away--created a rising sense of panic in the staff. When the plane struck the Pentagon shortly thereafter, we were swept up in the general panic. One of the ephemeral aspects of the event that is often forgotten, is the wave of false reports that swept D.C. as smoke began to rise from the Pentagon. Because of the short buildings in the city, and the exceptional clarity of the weather, a number of people clearly looked out their windows and saw the smoke without a good sense of perspective. Combined with the rumble of trucks through the city streets, people were calling in reports of bombs going off all over the city, including Capitol Hill. A number of the staff felt convinced that they had heard and felt the reported "explosion" on Capitol Hill. So the horror of the events unfolding on TV became fused with a very real sense of personal danger. At the time, the actual collapse of the towers became lost in the sensory overload of the moment. Gradually, as the false reports were discounted the overwhelming tragedy of the events began to take hold, we began to focus on a desire to get home. The office officially closed around 11:00, but I hung around the office until around 2:30--the roads were jammed with traffic, and my subway ride home takes me under the Pentagon, so the office seemed like the only sensible place to be. So I spent the afternoon answering e-mails and calls from friends and colleagues elsewhere in the country, curious about what was going on in D.C. When I finally left, the most striking thing was the quiet. The normal noises of Capitol Hill were largely absent. Many of the residents seemed to be out on the front steps of their townhouses, talking in hushed tones into their cell phones or to their neighbors. Walking to the Metro I discovered that most of the major routes had been closed by the Capitol Hill police, who had set up flares and positioned vehicles across the main intersections. The enormity of the day was reinforced on the subway ride home, as we emerged from a tunnel by National Airport, you could see that it was completely devoid of life, save for a few police vehicles. And glancing back the way we had come, you could still see the edge of smoke rising from the Pentagon. I wrote what I felt those two days in order that in the future my children and grandchildren would be able to understand the true emotional rollercoaster I, and every other American was on. History books can't describe everything. I just wanted to document how I felt. I have only read my writting once in the past year and don't enjoy reliving the memory. America Under Attack: A Youths View I woke up yesterday morning with my same old? ritual. My little hand held alarm went off at around 6:00 am in the morning and being the lazy teenager that I am I hit the snooze button over and over again. I couldn?t get my naive little eyelids to open up and get ready for the world. I didn?t know then that the moment I got out of bed I would be startled and immediately wide eyed and horror struck. I also didn?t know then that my life would be forever changed and even now don?t know how it will change or to what extent. What I know now is what I feel and only at this moment; only at this time; only as a child could. Our house phone was ringing off the hook. I thought why oh why are people calling when I am trying to sleep. I now of course consider my sleep a selfish act on that horrible morning. I finally rolled out of bed around 20 minutes till 7am. I answered my cell phone, which had been ringing for some time. It was a friend on the phone and just wanted to know if I could go out to eat with her after school. I said yes but was interrupted by her when she said something was happening and to go watch the news. I said okay and hung up the phone. I thought it was odd that my Dad was already up as I noticed my parents bedroom door was open and the room vacant. I rushed down the stairs to meet my Mom and Dad in the living room. I looked at both of them before I looked at the TV. My mom who was on the couch and my Dad in a chair turned and gave me the worst look one could get. The look of terror on your own parents face is something no one should ever see. My mom and I watched the news while my Dad talked to my Uncle on the phone. We didn?t know what to think but the terror wasn?t over. I heard my Dad on the phone say ?yes, yes I see.? And then his face went white. He looked over at my Mom and I an said ?they just hit the Pentagon, they just hit the Pentagon.? The warm fresh tears gushed down my face. My mom and I clenched each other?s hand as I sat down on the floor next to her. My mom and I then continued to mutter out prayers to God tears still covering my face and rolling down onto my pajamas. After talking to my Uncle a bit more my dad hung up. He looked over at my mom and I once again and in a low and horror stricken tone said, ?We are under attack, America is under attack.? I sat with my parents for a few more minutes wondering what was going on. The weirdest things rushed through my mind but also the most common thoughts. What was going on? Who is doing this? And my main thought was, Is this the end of the world? I knew I had to get going and get ready for the day. Leaving my parents, ?my guardians?, and for a seventeen year old my ?soul source of strength? was difficult but I went up stairs to get ready for the day anyway. While in my room I turned on the TV and saw what I think will forever stay in my memory. The news coverage was very up to date and as I stood watching in my room they were interviewing over the phone an on the spot reporter. She was saying how horrible the crash was. At that moment she all of the sudden screamed and in a horrific voice said, ?oh my God it?s another.? At the same time I saw live on TV the ruble of the second crash into the south building rushing toward the ground. I don?t know why but my mind just went blank. I think I may have been in shock or maybe my fear was too great to even think. For a moment in time I Courtney Johnson thought of nothing, said nothing and felt nothing but blankness. Once I came out of my ?moment?, I scatted to the stairs and yelled down ?they hit us again, watch the TV.? By this time everyone on TV could only say, oh God, oh God! After throwing on some clothes I told my parents good-bye and started toward the door. My dad didn?t know why I was going but I said it was only for 2 hours and I would be home. I had an early release day already so I wouldn?t be gone long. I was wrong. Those 2 hours seemed like an eternity. On my way to school I listened to the radio. The DJs all sounded shocked and confused. Most were shaken and trying to compose themselves as they talked over the radio. My dad called to let me know that I shouldn?t drink the water at school just in case. When I hung up with him over my cell phone I wanted to turn and go home but I thought no keep going Court. I pulled up to school and rushed into my class. To my surprise no TV was on, no radio was on and school was going on as usual. I begged and begged to hear something but we couldn?t get anything over the TV. My teacher finally got through on the internet and we heard the latest. A plane had gone down in Pennsylvania. All I could think of was the dead, the families of the dead, and where my future was going. Some students seemed to care while other obviously didn?t understand at the time what was going on and the reality of it. For some reason I felt such a strong pull toward my fellow classmates. I just wanted to embrace them all. Many boys in my psych class began to worry as talk of war came about. Being overly dramatic teenagers everyone thought oh no, they?re going to reinstate the draft. The look on the boys face was like nothing I have ever seen. They all of the sudden looked like men willing to fight but at the same time looked like young boys just fresh out of middle school. I wanted to just picture for a moment a good thought. Boys playing ?America?s favorite pastime sport? or coming up all muddy from the creek with smiles on their faces because of the days small catch. But my innocent mental picture was shattered at the voices of teachers (those who were talking about the tragedy) saying our lives are forever changed. Changed? I thought. What is going to happen? I left school with a very uneasy feeling in my stomach. This was too much for a mostly cheerful youth like me to be going through. How selfish It thought I was to think of myself while people, my fellow Americans, and my friends? families where being torn apart. I barely remember the 20-minute drive home but what I recall seeing were all of our U.S flags flying at half mass. That is what did it for me. I broke down. The land of the free, the land where I thought I was safe, and the bubble I thought I had around me was now popped. Tears once again rushed down my young cheeks. The same cheeks tears rolled down over when I got a bad grade, or over a boy , or even a joke so funny I cried out of laughter. Never had those cheeks of mine been covered with tears of fear for our country. Never did I think they would. When I got home my parents were in the same state as when I left. They were even in the same physical spots on the couch, and in my Dad?s usual chair. I had a bite to eat and sat down on the couch to watch the day?s events over and over on the news. I must have been so tired and so emotionally exhausted that I fell asleep. I know I dreamt about the horror but I don?t know what I was dreaming because I kept waking up to the sounds on the TV. When I woke up my dad was leaving for work. He seemed so sad, so lost, yet so strong and stable for my family and me. I was supposed to go into work that day but all Starbucks had been closed nation wide. I was relieved to hear that because I was in no state to go be ?Mary Sunshine? and act as though things were all okay. I kept watching the news that day and kept becoming more and more depressed. Finally that night I decided to go visit a friend. I knew she could cheer me up and we could forget for a moment what was going on and why our childhood was over. We lay outside that night looking at the stars and finally having a cheery ?girl chat?, but our innocent giggles ended when we noticed 5 or 6 planes in the air. They were moving very fast and we knew they must be the military. Once again the sadness just took over our hearts. I decide to head home. When I got home I watched the news more but knew that I needed some sleep. I went up to bed to rest and prepare for the days to come. That night I slept with my door open so I could have the feeling of safety knowing my parents were just down the steps. As I laid in bed I couldn?t but feel upset that I was able to get a warm bed, I had a full stomach, and I didn?t have to get up that next morning and make decisions for our country as a whole. I didn?t have to worry about losing my mom, dad, or sisters. I was lucky. God spared me. As for now the day after, I don?t know what to think or to feel. I wasn?t directly involved or hurt. I?m not even close to the horror. I just wish I could do something, as most people do but can?t. I can give blood I know and I will but what I know I can do is pray, and pray I will. I really don?t know what will happen now. I keep wishing this wouldn?t have happened but that is denial and I won?t get caught up in that. What I will do is keep moving on with my life. I will keep going for the ones that can?t. I will be one of the many American?s who show the evil of the world that they may put a boulder in my path of life but I will climb over that boulder and keep marching on with my head high. I am seventeen and I have lived a short life. It has been sheltered and I am loved. I can?t relate to many experiences people have had and most would consider me a naive child. I don?t care. I know I am an American and I know I love my country. If I can get shivers every time I hear our National Anthem then I know I love my land. I don?t have the knowledge of many but I have the love and that is what will keep my strength and support of our country and government going strong.
