Tell us your story: STOLEN Not to be a wet blanket, but I thought I'd offer another perspective on the sad, sick, events that happened today: At 6 years old, my son Patrick has enjoyed for his whole life a luxury that few Americans have known. Born into this strange gift, he was blessed and fortunate to be in a position where he could never realize that his parents (and his parents' parents) hadn't enjoyed a similar gift. He and his young peers have lived their lives in a nation enjoying an all-too-brief period free from a sense of national fear. Unlike his parents, he hasn't been raised with a national fear of Communist Russia and the lingering threat of nuclear war. And unlike their parents, he has never known air raid drills, blackout curtains, or the turmoil of world war. Tonight, I looked in his eyes and witnessed the exact moment at which that innocence was stolen. After an uneventful Karate class, I surprised him by telling him that we were going to have dinner at a new pizza place that had just opened. He was told that we were celebrating his successful belt testing last Friday - this week he will graduate from a yellow belt to an orange belt. Really, I just wanted to keep him away from TV until bedtime. I knew that turning on the TV would mean having to explain what had happened this morning, and frankly, I wasn't up to it. I also hoped that maybe we wouldn't have to face it at all. While I've always believed in discussing weighty issues openly and honestly with Patrick, I just didn't think that this was something that he could benefit from learning about. I thought that the distraction of pizza might be a better idea. Shortly after we had sat down and ordered, I watched as my plan fell apart. Straight ahead of me, just above Patrick's head, was a TV which I could see clearly. It was off, and I hadn't really paid much attention to it. When it came on, I realized it would only be a matter of moments until he turned around to see the coverage that I had been watching all day. As I heard the sound come from behind me, I realized that he wouldn't have to turn around at all - behind me, on the wall opposite the other TV, the same coverage was playing. As I watched in a trance, I saw an image that was new to me. It was of the second airliner striking the WTC, shot from the street below the tower in such a way that you could actually see it breaking through the exterior of the building. As I looked away from the screen, I made eye contact with Patrick as he pointed out to me that "an airplane just flew through that building and exploded." I've never seen him so perplexed. I saw in his eyes something I had never seen before. He had seen horrible acts of destruction before. I had caught him watching war footage on TV when I assumed he was watching Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel. We had walked the encampments at Valley Forge together and talked about the lives lost during the Revolutionary War. We had discussed how his great grandfather had been a prisoner of war in Germany, and the abuses he suffered. But each time I could explain it away, and ease his mind. "That happened in another country", I would say. Or "that was before we had the kind of weapons that we have today to protect our country." Even as we discussed the realities in a very "adult" manner, it was always easy to compartmentalize the tragedy in a box far-removed from his everyday life. Until now. What he watched as we sat in that pizza place was the lives of people just like him and me being taken for no reason. It was happening now, and it was happening in our backyard. As we talked about it then, and later before he fell asleep at home, I was amazed at just how much of this he "got". He assumed that the plane was full of people (why else would a plane be in the air?). He understood that at that speed, every person on the plane was killed in the crash. As he saw footage of the towers after the collision, he saw the size of the holes through them and pointed out that it looked like there were a lot of floors through which the planes had crashed. When I acknowledged this, he asked if each floor was as big as one of the floors in our house. I didn't have the heart to tell him that each floor was big enough to fit his whole school inside of it. When he heard one of the commentators suggest that the WTC houses 50,000 workers, he wanted to know how many fifty-thousand was. My mind reeled, and I thought of the largest number of people he had ever seen at one time. "More people than were in the stands at the baseball game last weekend", realizing that the entire stadium would need to be refilled many times to fit that many people. I could see his mind processing the reality of that many people dying. It made no sense to try to explain that tens of thousands were evacuated / not there, etc. We talked about who would do such a thing (I told him it was "bad people" - a nod to the fact that there are people in this world who are evil). We talked about what the victims had done to deserve this (he seemed to understand the "sometimes bad things happen to good people" reasoning). We talked about the fact that the hijackers had committed suicide (I was amazed to hear him say this, and even more amazed that he really understood the concept). We talked about why a pilot would fly his plane into a building instead of fighting the hijackers (I explained the theory that, at that point, the pilots were not behind the controls). And then he asked me the question that stopped me in my tracks. "Could that ever happen here?" I stammered something about "big buildings" and "landmarks" and may have even used terms like "symbols of the American culture" as I tried to explain that Chester County would be an unlikely target. But I knew that the honest answer to his question was "Yes." And the shock that had shrouded my perception of the days events disappeared instantly and was replaced by rage. Those sons of bitches hidden in a hole in some other part of the world, who had taken the lives of thousands of innocent people whom they had never met and who had never met them, had also stolen something from my son. This wonderful little boy would face, at least periodically, the reality that something like this could happen to him. Now, like his parents who worried about nuclear war, and his grandparents who worried about air raids, he and his peers would have their own national fear. It would have been pointless to try to draw distinctions that distanced this tragedy. In his mind (or that of anyone who faced the full reality of the situation), the people who were killed or injured were just like us, going about their regular, everyday lives. Maybe they were at their desk, or flying to visit a relative, or on their way to a meeting. Nothing special, or out of the ordinary. But their lives were ended. Because of the coincidence of where they were at a particular time. For Patrick, his country was no longer without a villain to threaten its safety. His nightmares were no longer without a tangible enemy. His security could no longer be assumed. And as Patrick looked at me, his eyes continuing to beg the question "Am I safe?", I did what I hated, but knew I had to do. I lied, and told him that something like that couldn't happen "here". I knew he was too smart to buy it, but I think it eased his mind a little for now. He fell asleep as I held him. *************** Please give blood today. Right now, it is the only way you can help. Tell us your story: At approximately 8AM I dropped my husband off on Church Street, one block North of the Number one tower and proceeded to drive to work in Long Island City. I had CBS radio on and Harry Harrison announced that there was smoke coming from one of the WTC towers, it seemed a plane had hit it. I arrived at work about five minutes after his announcement somewhere around 9AM. Everyone was looking at the first Tower we could see the smoke from our office then someone called and said it wasn't an accident another plane had just hit the other WTC Tower. We were all in shock and I couldn't reach my husband. I was the only one in the office with someone near the Towers. We closed the office and I was getting ready to drive back to Brooklyn at about 10AM when someone ran out of the office and stopped me to tell me my husband was home and safe, he had walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. It feels like it happened yesterday and it's almost like I never knew what it was like to not worry about what might happen next. The story I'm about to tell is short, but it sticks out vividly in my mind and I'm tearing up just thinking about it. It's not a story of sadness, or hatred, but a testament to the strength of a nation when pulled together under the most horrific circumstances. This event occurred the Friday after September 11th. I was filled with anger and pride. I remember wondering why it took something so horrible for me to finally become patriotic. My girlfriend and I were driving from Richmond, to Norfolk and were glad to be in each other's company and glad to be heading back home to family. The interstate can be fairly aggravating in the afternoons around Hampton Roads. This day was no different than the others. Everyone had a flag, a decal, a note, to show their pride and support of the nation. I didn't have a flag, but I took a piece of paper and wrote "God Bless America" and taped it to the passenger side window. We were nearly home and had just driven under an overpass where one sole person stood with a large flag and waived it over the interstate. I smiled and held my girlfriend's hand tighter. We drove a little further and a car pulled up beside us. It was filled with a rough looking group of guys, who looked like troublemakers. He looked at me and I didn't know what to expect, or what he was thinking. He looked at my sign and simply shook his head. I smiled back. The next exit came up and they put their signal on to move over. As he merged onto the exit, he opened his window and simply stuck out his arm and made the peace sign. I watched him go off into the distance, arm outstretched. Two guys, two strangers, two Americans connected that day. It still brings tears to my eyes. I saw a large moon shaped, "Other World" come out of the east and strike our land with great destruction. I e-mailed Art Bell and told him about the vision, I also e-mailed the KOMO radio & T.V. Station in Seattle and informed them of the same. I also e-mailed Rush Limbaugh about the vision. Being a star gazer, I was watching the milky way in the section of the "Northern Cross" and asking God to reveal to me the meaning of the vision. The next morning, 7-11, I was listening to the news on, KNWX radio station in Seattle and heard the news that one plane had struck the World Trade tower, then they interupted to say that another plane had struck the seccond tower. I hurriedly got dressed and told my son John, who is head programmer at Fort Lewis, and he hurried over to get busy with the computers and be of further help. Tell us your story: It was my day off of work and I was sitting by myself drinking my second cup of coffee watching the news thinking about all the stuff I was going to get done today in the house. When the news break came on and I saw the plane crash into the first tower I was in a fog at first. My mind couldn't percieve what was happening. Then I watched as the second tower got hit. I started to feel scared and anxious. Then the Pentagon then the plane in PA. I was totally bewildered. All I could think about were all those poor innocent people. How could anybody be so cruel. When the towers collapsed so did I. I felt so helpless. I just sat and watched and cried as the moments passed. I just kept thinking how could so many lifes be taken so quickly. Of course the first person I lashed out at was God. How could he let this happen? Where was he when these poor people needed him. In time I realized I couldn't blame God for the total lack of disreguard of human life. One year later on Sept. 11th, 2002 I feel so sad again. Once again helpless. Tell us your story: My story has previously been told, but looking back five years later it still leaves an eerie feeling in the pit of my stomach. It sickens me thinking about the horror the victims, their familes, citizens of this country and those abroad went through on that day. My son is now five. I tried to explain to him yesterday what had happened when he was only eight months old. He still isn't old enough to understand, but someday he will. Someday he will understand the sacrifices made on that day - willingly and unwillingly. Someday he will understand that no matter what happens in our lives, we have to push on. Something that would make it easier for you to understand why we as humans do the things we do to one another. Believe it or not, your father was once young and ignorant in the ways of the world.. I was a Senior in High School. I wasn't even old enough to vote yet. For some reason or another, I had walked out of class and headed up to the office. The reason, to this day, I am unable to remember. I remember watching the television as I waited for the secretary to finish with me - one of the Towers had been struck by a plane. The news reporters were speculating, "Possibly the instruments on the plane malfunctioned and they veered off-course, it's simply too early to tell.." Then, less than a minute later - the world stood still. We watched in horror as the second plane turned directly into the second Tower. I felt my eyes begin to water, because at that moment I knew that our world would never be the same. Our country would never be the same. And most of all, our lives, would never be the same. For the next week our eyes were glued to the television. CNN, MSNBC, FOX, all of them had cancelled programming in order to mourn the losses of those people. And while I was so far away - I felt so close at the sametime. On September 12th, your father, Jared Daniel Smith - woke up and drove to school. On my way to school, I saw something that would have an impact on my life forever. It wasn't a huge banner or the words of a saddened President or political leader - it was a small boy holding a sign that said, "We Will Remember." Always remember, my children. Do not ever forget the victims and the heroes of September 11, 2001. For they are the shoulders we as a country stand-on today. They are the memories of who we really are. Always remember the fire-fighters and public servants that gave their lives for people they had never met before. They were our soldiers on the front-lines. Always remember that everytime you pledge to the flag of the United States of America, and everytime you do a civic duty, and everytime you help out a fellow American - that you are honoring the memories of those people who died on September 11th. My life was changed a lot, because you think to yourself, ?Are you really safe where you are if you are in danger? All these things come to mind after the planes crashed into the world trade centers, the pentagon, and sommerset, PA. These things definitely scared me a lot. Lots of people lost their lives that day. When the days started to pass by, I would be afraid when a plane flew over head! I also am not going to attempt to go on to a plane unless I really have to. The reason I wouldn?t want to is because their security systems aren?t really that great. You hear a lot on the news. I especially felt bad when I was reading the news paper and read that a man was arrested by having a gun on a plane, just so he could prove to his wife that the security wasn?t safe for her to go on a plane just yet. But for the love of his wife he was arrested just to show his wife that it wasn?t safe. Even now a year after the tragedy the airlines are still not safe and anyone could probably highjack a plane now that they saw it already happened, because they now that they can get through the airlines security system. Many people were affected by what happened. I didn?t know anyone that had a family member or someone close to them that was at the WTC, but when going to on the internet, I went on a September 11website. I was looking, sadly, at all the people?s names that have died and the closest person was Jeffery Coale, who lived in Souderton. (ten minutes away from here) and I felt very sad. My family wasn?t really effected other than my mom because she was thinking to herself, what is bob (my dad) was in the WTC. She would be another mom with an unborn baby without a father if he had died there. That made me very sad. Other than that we weren?t really effected we were just sad at the fact that all of those people had died in the tragedy. I think that our generation was affected, just about what had happened! Otherwise I think we took it good, because at first we were all scattered and scared at what had happened, but then we came together as a country and helped with funds and raised money for the people who lost members of their family in the incident. About a week after the tragedy a lot of people went outside and lit candles for everyone who had lost their lives, or that had loved ones die, and also just for the sadness of what had happened. I was horrified. Basically this was a very sad day for everyone and will be remembered always. Every one lives we changed and they will be for a long time, until we do something about it. I had just taken my daughter to school and did not have the radio on as I usually do. When I walked in the door, my boyfriend, who was supposed to go into the city that morning but opted to be late, looked at me with this look at said "have you seen this?" Of course I had not since it had just happened. I sat in utter disbelief as I watched the second plan hit the second tower and realized that it was not a replay of the first plane. Then the realization that there were people on board the planes, the towers were loaded with people at work. My heart at that moment must have felt the pain of all those that had suffered. I cried for days as I watch the events unfold and realized all of those that had perished and suffered because of the hate of one man. My boyfriends sister's husband worked right next to the twin towers and it took him 13 hours to get home and about 4 for her to know he was okay. My heart goes out to all of the children, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, and friends who lost someone close to them. You will always be remembered in my prayers. I also pray that we never forget the lessons that the loss of all of those lives have taught us. Tell us your story: I was in Nicaragua on an LDS mission, and I can remember that I was getting ready to go home to the USA in about a month and a half. I was getting very excited to go home to Utah. I could also remember that I had stayed awake the majority of the night before, due to a baby that had been crying almost the entire night. That didn't make the morning very easy for me. However, after finishing a meeting in the morning, I went with three other missionaries to a restaurant in Juigalpa at about noon, and while we were waiting for our food, I happened to see the big screen TV tuned to CNN, and I saw the news caption that read "EEUU bajo ataque". Then, I saw the awful sight of the twin towers collapsing after the planes had collided with them. At first I thought that it was just a bomb, but then I had learned that two planes had collided with the towers, and it was the most awful sight I had seen. After that, I began thinking about the dangerous circumstances I'd be returning to. I started to worry that it would be such an emergency that the draft would be reinstated, and that the young men of the country would be called out to war. After that, however, I started thinking about how the family members of the victims would be feeling, and then I felt like the position of the US was being questioned. I was meeting my teacher. When I got to my science class, my hostory teacher ran into the room and told us that two planes had hit the twwin towers. I had no idea about what they were talking about. As we waited for our food, we say the amatur footage of the first plane hit the first tower. We were shocked and at first thought it was a small aircraft, but my husband said it was a jet liner. Then moments later, we saw the second plane hit the other tower. We had finished what we could of our lunch and tried to find a radio station the car to listen to. We had ticket to tour a castle that day and we went there and waited for our appointed tour time. There were a few other Americans in the tour, so who knew what had happened and others who didn't. As we waited, we told them and then we heard about the Pentagon. My father is in the military and was with us on vacation. He has many friends at the Pentagon and we began to worry greatly. Some of the radio stations were listening to seemed to exagerating the damage to the Pentagon and Washington DC. Someone else came into where we were waiting and said all of DC was gone. To our relief this was not the case. We tried to watch the news as often as we could over the next several days. The Irish people were very supportive and the Repulic shut down on Friday as a day of mourning. They held religous services and displayed many American flags on their homes. (It might have looked like a small US town around the 4th of July). We did not having any trouble getting home as we had just started our two week vacation, but several other Americans we met had to extend their vacations by as much as a week. I remember getting ready in the morning to go to school, admiring the new outfit I just got and then I headed out the door. I went to the bus stop and me and my friend Stephanie were chatting the whole way to school. When I got to school it was around 8:30, our teacher hadn't come in yet. We waited for like a half-hour. Most of the kids were happy she wasn't coming in, but I felt like there was something wrong. I suggested to my friend Liz that we should go to the office and ask where our teacher was. We did, and when we got in there the new-installed tv's in the office were showing a plane crashing into a very tall building. I was just like, Ok, anyway, I asked the secretary where my teacher was and she had this look in her eyes that something was terribly wrong. I started getting scared. She said that Mrs. Tolstyka was in a meeting with the other teachers. We said ok, and then we both went back to our classmate. We got back there and seen Mrs. Tolstyka teary-eyed and shocked. Everyone was saying "whats wrong, whats wrong?!" and she said that since we were 'immature' 5th graders we shouldn't know. So, I just sat down at my desk and continued that school day wondering why everyone was freaked out. We went home early at 2:00 (we usually get out at 3:15), and we got a note sent home that some kind of thing happened. I don't remember what it said. My friend Stephanie who was a grade younger than me says, "What is this?" and I just told her it was a bomb threat somewhere. and she said "ok." When I got home I went into the laundry room where my mom was, she told me what happened and I never even knew what the twin towers were, I asked her where they were, why did this happen, and so many questions I needed answering. I didn't fully understand, but that was fine with me. I cried at the thought my brother was visiting New York City that week, LUCKILY, my brother and his girlfriend came back from New York on September 11, they left at 7:30 in the morning PASSING the WTC and going onto the Express way back home. He said that on September 9, they took a tour of the WTC and they said it was a wonderful place. I had chills up and down my spine at the thought that my brother was standing on what is now nothing. My mom's birthday is September 11, and that day no one, not even my dad remembered her birthday. So many innocent lives died that day and in memory of it I'm writing a story on 9/11, most of it is fiction, I go back in time and stop everyone going to work or going near the WTC and the pentagon. My daughter was to fly back to her home in Virginia that morning. She was putting things in her rental car and turned the ignition key on and heard that the world trade center had been hit with something or maybe bombed. It was second period on September 11th and a plane just hit the first World Trade Building and a second plane hit the other tower and I was not aware of what had happened at that point. During third period in gym class Mr. Sanford heard what was going on and turned on the television so we all could watch. The television showed the planes hitting the towers, all the smoke, and the hundreds of people running with the firemen and trucks going in the opposite direction, which was into the buildings. My first thought was " we are going to war, we will find who is responsible for this and go to war." Everyone in the gym just looked around in complete shock and some were even scared. The next period we learned and saw so much more. We saw the replays of the first and second planes hitting the two buildings. Only a short time later both of the towers collapsed. The hundreds of people standing there watching suddenly ran as the two giant structures collapsed to the ground. After they hit the ground there was still a huge cloud of smoke that prevented you from seeing your hand in front of your face. If you were in New York City then you could see and smell the damage. After the smoke finally started to clear you could see many people walking around with cameras, blankets to help the cold or injured, and breathing masks. Many people with cameras took pictures of strangers helping each other. The stock market was also greatly affected, it had to be shut down for 3 and a half days. President Bush instantly started making many phone calls to the Vice President and the Speaker of the House to find out as much as possible. After they discussed the problem they knew that it was a terrorist attack. The only person they suspected was the infamous Osama bin Laden. The hijackers of the plane were from his terrorist camp in the Middle East. A few hours later all the damage was complete. At this time, the President and his colleagues were on the phone trying to make reason with what came about. The public began to call and start look for their friends and relatives. Both of the towers were completely destroyed and the Pentagon was hit in the army section. There was also another plane that was aiming for the White House. One brave passenger was the leader of the attack on the hijackers. That made the plane crash in Somerset, Pennsylvania. It is now eight months after the tragedy of September 11th, 2001. The mood of the American people has changed dramatically. Before this people forgot about nationalism but now many flags and other American symbols are displayed with pride for our country. The fact that strangers helped each other during this time of tragedy shows that this horrendous act on American soil did not weaken our spirit or our confidence in the United States. As soon as I entered the house she told me to come see the tv. She was watching the Today show and they were showing live pictures of the first crash. As we watched the show the second plane came in. Right then everyone just knew that it was definately not an accident and that we were being attacked. As I watched in disbelief I remember thinking about how those poor people at the top would have a hard time getting to the bottom of the building and to safety.
