Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was woken by my sister yelling at me to turn on the television. She had driven the kids to school and was on her way back to the house when she heard a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers. I raced downstairs and had just turned on the TV as she burst into the house. We watched as flames shot out of the tower and thought that this must be some awful accident. Slowly we became aware of a second plane visible in the sky and were transfixed as it hit the second tower. It became obvious this was no accident. News was coming so fast! It was hard to process the horror of what we were watching. We became aware of a third plane hitting the Pentagon as we watched the towers burn. We know people in NYC but were fairly sure that we didn't have a presonal connection to anyone in those buildings--but it FELT personal. It felt like I knew those people trapped inside and I prayed hard for them to escape. My sister and I were kneeling in front of the TV and all of a sudden I heard myself blurt out "It going down!" I am not sure how I knew but it must have been a change in the way the tower looked--it seemed to flex slightly and then just let go. We watched helpless as people ran for thier lives and other were surely lost forever. There was no question in my mind very shortly into this horrific day that terroists were at work and I was griped with fear. My husband was in India, in a city that was already tense because of friction between Hindus and Muslims. The phone rang at about 10am and I told my husbnd what was going on--he began to gather with other Americans and British citizens to watch events unfold on CNN International. Coverage they watched included videos of celebrations in Pakistan and Afganistan--people cheering the distruction of important American landmarks and the loss of American lives. As my husband passed this information to me over the phone I shared with him the information that a fourth plane had gone down in PA--its probable target in DC spared by brave passengers. I told him Air raffic was stopped and he was now trapped on the Indian SubContinent. While speaking to my husband, my sister and I watched as the second tower and all those people disintigrated. We couldn't even cry anymore. As the day unfolded and the truth about who had done these horrible things came to light I found myself feeling very restless. I felt like I needed to do something, burn off some energy. The next thing I knew I was standing in my garden in the driving rain pulling out plants that I no longer wanted. As little as three hours before those Gladiolli were no problem--but now they HAD to come out. I need to do something physical, to burn off some of the tension. Soaked to the skin, muddy from pulling out bulbs I could finaly really understand that I was experiencing greif like I never had before. Grief for all those lost lives, all those injured people, and for America's innocence. Maybe it was time to view the world differently but not like that, not at so high a cost. I realized I felt the need for vengence--a surprising need for a pacifist--but a strong need indeed. Standing there dripping and crying I recognised the fact that the world as I knew it was not the world my children would grow up in--and it made me mad. My husband made it home 10 very frantic days later--flying in a wide path around Afganistan. He got to come home--so many husbands, fathers, brothes, uncles, mothers, sisters and Aunts did not. I was waiting for the Consultant to arrive to put on a Legislative Program for our lobbyist. Everyone was quietly working, phones had not started to ring too much yet, just a normal peaceful day. Steve Marks, our consultant, came running in the door and yelled to turn on the TV. AGC has a big screen tv for presentations and meetings. Normally it is never turned on. Andrea turned on the tv and there was a picture of the World Trade Center with smoke coming out of it. Mark said we had been attacked and might be at war. Really could not comprehend that as a possibility. While watching the tv, another plane appeared and just went into the other building. It was not real, did not make sense, could not understand what was happening, shock, looked like a movie (reminded me of the radio show that terrorized the world). Tears came. On September 11th I had been living in Miami, Florida for 2 months and was seven months pregnant with my first child. My sister and I work carpooling to work and we heard a special announcement on the news that a plane crashed into one of the twin towers. Anyone from New York knows that that used to be nothing to be scared about since planes often went too low and barely missed the needle of one of the towers. We ignored it until they made the second annoucement a few mintes later and that's wehn we started getting nervous. By the time I dropped her off in front of her job, they had already announced the Pentagon's attack. I work only three miles from her so as soon as I got into my job, it was complete chaos. The television sets were on and we were watching the live footage. All phone lines were busy or down. No cell phones were working. You could see the people jumping from the towers. When the first tower fell, we lost all communication my sister and I even had with each other because of the volume of calls passing inside the U.S. When we got through, we were able to reach our mother who works by the Empire State Building still. We could hear the sheer terror and chaos in the background as her co-workers watched the people jumping from the windows. When the second tower fell, my mother's job finally evacuated her. After our call got cut off, we didn't speak to my mother or hear from her again until eight o'clock that night after she walked 200 block uptown to get to her Bronx apartment. All day we waited to hear from our friends because of the telephone problems. I left my job before noon because I began to experience an anxiety attack when we couldn't find anyone and we didn't know which of our friends had been there, or had been hurt. My husband's brother worked at the SouthStreet Seaport and was also unable to communicate with anyone. We watched the footage from home, and it was surreal. Like a bad car accident. You don't want to look, but you can't tear yourself away. At the end of the day, all of our close freinds and relatives had thankfully been either far away, or just plain lucky. My husband lost a close friend, one of the firefighters, a hero who went in when everyone else was running out. Another friend lost her fiance. Three days later I celebrated what I'll remember as literally the worst birthday I've ever had. We wre still miserable and depressed and it was the first news that we'd heard that my husband's friend was missing. It's been four years almost. I still have a hard time even talking about that day. I record the annual specials and tributes because I want this memory to be etched into the minds of my kids when they're older. But I don't watch them. It's still way too emotional, too close to home. Whenever I start to regret the fact that I was thousands of miles away when it happened, instead of being in the city that I had been born and raised in, I'm reminded that everything has it's rhyme and reason. Tragic and heartbreaking as it is, 9/11 had to happen to remind us of our fragility and frailty. We had to lose those lives to remember and appreciate the ones we still have. I pray for the families, friends and loved ones of those lost. I pray for the children and wives and husbands the brave heroes left behind. And I hope that twenty years from now, when two new larger towers have been standing in place of the ones we lost, that my kids and other children not yet born or too young to know the disaster we've endured may be humbled by the memory of that day. I remember driving to work that morning and catching the end of a news report about a plane crashing into a building. I then began switching channels to find out the rest of the story. When I came into the office the TV's were on and everyone was surrounded around them, tears streaming down faces. To my horror I heard the rest of the story that I had missed that morning. I felt an ache rising in my stomach because I never thought in my lifetime I would see such a horrific display of hatred and evil and at the same time such love and patriotism. This is a date that will live on in my heart and has forever affected me. In the midst of dressing I get a call from the living room from my mother-in-law, who was visiting, I went in and saw the replay of the first airplane hitting the World Trade Center tower, my only thought was oh no, traffic was about to get stupid. I rushed to get finish dressing and jumped in the car, I was about a quarter of mile from my home when the news of the second plane hitting the tower was reported, I knew then as most of us did that we were under attack. I continued to work, never taking in consideration that maybe I should just stay at home that day. Traffic did not get stupid in fact it was just about clear sailing all the way to New Jersey, the news reports from the radio were chilling I cannot remember the exact sequence of the reports but before arriving at Teterboro I learned the Pentagon had been hit that the authorities were looking for a plane, that the South Tower hit at the World Trade Center had collapsed and that all air traffic had been grounded. As I approached Teterboro I could see in the distance the North tower still standing, it is a vivid memory one that I shall never forget. The tower had a gapping hole in it, you could see the jagged beams of the structure around the hole, smoke was billowing out of the hole upward toward the sky. The thing that struck me more than anything at that point was the smoke from a distance of about 9 miles was not black but white, had I been any closer I probably would have seen the people jumping from the windows I am glad I was not closer. The rest of the day at work was spent watching television reports and being extremely afraid which gave way in a few days to anger. That day I remember sitting in my 4th period mth class bored as anything.... There was about 10min until lunch and they got on the loud speaker and announced that there had been a terrorist attack on teh World Trade center... I gasped in horror being that both of my parents work in NYC... The bell then rang and luckily my sister drives and we had the same lunch. We ran out of school and we were driving home. I tried reaching my mom on her cell phone but couldn't b/c the lines were down in NY and she has a NY cell phone, same for my dad... However my dad had gone 2 Boston on Sept. 10 and was out of state... I knew he wasn't there but he walks in there every single morning from teh Ferry, I just couldn't get the thought out that he could'v been there. I then called my Grandma and she told me that my mom got home... my mom left 4 work late that day and never made it past the GWB, I was so relieved... When we got home we ran inside 2 see my mom in front of the TV, wut i saw b fore my very eyes was an image that i never thought i would see... people dying right in front of my eyes. We all immediatly broke down in tears. I didn't think this could be real, I thought this has to be a dream... it wasn't... Later that day we kept on getting calls 2 make sure my dad was ok b/c people thought he did work in the WTC, luckily not and that he was also away. However we did have a family friends dad die, he worked on the 101st floor of the 1st tower hit... I had just been promoted to a new position in the University and was very busy trying to learn my job. I have the opportunity to work with 2 of my sisters. I was busy at my job when my older sister came into the mail room of our department and had a terrible look on her face, she had told me a jet had hit the World Trade Center, immediately I noticed almost everyone in our Business Office was up out of their desks and running to the nearest TV. We watched as the other jet crashed and then yet another. Our worked had stopped. I also immediately thought about my 13 yr od twin daughters and their reaction, as well as safety, because I began thinking after I heard of the second jet crashing, about a terroist attack, it had finally happened. I hate doubting our government, but for some reason I always thought that if they wanted to get to us they would do anything to do so. I tried to call the school several times. The lines were busy...... I finally reached the school principal and she assured me the children were fine. and they had began counseling them on this terrible attack. The day seemed to last forever, I cried for the families and victims of the attack. As I look back on this day I still become angered saddened and disturbed thinking of this day. How could anyone be so cruel to do this????? I still cry to this day and especially on this day. A celebrity interview was interrupted and Brian Gumble began to tell what happened. I got my son in front of the TV and told him, "You will remember this day for the rest of your life." We both will. I took him to school. The first tower fell. I went to work. Kept going back to the breakroom to find out what had happened now. The news got worse and worse. At Wal-Mart, 500 employees and 2,000 customers wandered around in shock, asking over and over, "What's happening?" when what we really wanted to know was, "How can this be real?" As the shock wore off over the next few days, resolution took over. The perpetrators had to be brought to justice. We wrapped ourselves in red, white and blue until the shelves were empty, even the ribbon. People who had let prejudices and grudges keep them from considering themselves American suddenly saw themselves as nothing but Americans. We all gave to the Relief Effort, money, time and blood. In the last year a resolve has grown in me to get to know all the stories of all the individuals who died that day. This is my personal war on terrorism, because the terrorists thought their lives were worthless, insignificant. I read every story. I watch the memorials. I stare at the pictures. I will learn the value of each one who died. I will not give the victory to the monsters. I will hold the memories of these precious souls in my heart, a living memorial to September 11th. We were called at our hotel by relatives back East the morning of 9/11, and immediately turned on the TV to see the horrific events taking place. The business conference in Vegas may or may not have been cancelled -- we don't know. We just decided we needed to get home to friends and family. Obviously we couldn't fly home, and calling rental companies for cars to drive back to Baltimore was futile. Luckily one person in our group had rented an SUV. So 5 of us, with all of our luggage, piled in and headed back East. It took us three days. It's the only time I've driven cross country. It's a shame it wasn't the kind of trip where we could stop along the way to enjoy our beautiful country... We let our company's travel agency worry about complaints from the car rental company for taking the car cross country. Tell us your story: I began my morning as usual going to the shop to help my brother with his AAA-business, when my mother calls and says turn the tv on, so i did. Within minutes of turning the tv on I saw the second plane crash into the Tower, I felt so sick at my stomach. We were learning about proofs and such, and my classmates and I had no idea of what was about to happen to history. Well, when my class ended I was walking up the stairs in the 100 Hall and I saw one of my best friends, Shawn, who seemed extremely worried and energetic. She said to me, "A plane flew into one of the World Trade Centers, and Rachel is crying!" Rachel was one of our friends. I remember Shawn saying this perfectly. It was weird and foggy. So I get my binders and books for the next class and I am not really worried about what had happened because I didn't understand. When if first happened I don't think many people understood. I continued to my next class, english. Everyone was buzzing about what had happened. Many people for the first time were finding out what had happened. Many of my classmates were confused and wanted to know more about what happened. The Second Tower was down also now. I don't think we understood yet what had happened. My next class was French and an announcement was made that the Pentagon was hit, and the Twin Towers were about to crumble. Both of them. The tallest buildings I had personally ever seen. Gone. Everyone was confused. Who had done this? Why had they done this? Why can't we find out right now what was happening. Every minute was crucial. Who knew what was to happen next? The announcements said not to turn on the T.V. I think that was good. To see this live might have been too hard. My next was class was a computer class where we had the freedom to search the internet for more information. In this class no one really talked to each other, but that day we were working together to find some information about what had happened. We didn't find much. The rest of the day I can't remember. That's all. I remember I went home and was looking on the internet and the t.v. at the same time to find some more information. Every major station even MTV was covering 9/11 information. I saw the first taping of the actual airplane coming into the building when I was home. I didn't cry then. I was too shocked, scared, and full of butterflies to cry. I didn't really cry about it until a month later when all the names of the victims were shown. It was horrible. It was different. It wasn't what I wanted. No one wanted it. We have moved on, but we are still scarred. No one can forget what happened. I think about it everyday. I will never forget. The terrorists highjacked the planes because they were mad at the USA. I didn't even know that anything was going on until I got to my 3rd period class. The classroom had the news on and we were watching the planes in the building when they were showing replays. Then I seen the 2nd plane hit the building, I felt very sad and mad. I was feeling sad for the people that were in the planes and mad at the people that did it. A little while after the planes hit the towers I was the two buildings fall to the ground. When I saw this happening I was shocked to to see those two tall buildings crash to the ground. There was a great ball of smoke and dust coming from the buildings. The thing that was very bad that the buildings and the views of the city was and is changed forever. The thing that scared me the most was when the teacher said that we were going to war and that the draft might be lowered to 16 years old if they needed more people to fight. After class I was going to my locker to get my things for my next class and my friend was hitting her locker and crying. I asked her what was wrong and she said, "nothing." Finally I got her to tell me what was wrong, she told me that she thought that her sister might have been in the buildings when the plane's hit because she was in the military and had been stationed down there. I felt so bad because she was all upset and I was trying to help her out and luckily it was kind of working. I had my arm around her and she hugged me because she was crying and we were standing there for a while both trying to calm one another down. I finally got her calmed down. I told her it would be okay then she tried to call her mom from the high school office to see if they had talked to her sister but she wasn't there. In my gym class we were going to go out side to play football and the school made us come in because they were worried that there were terrorists on the run and they didn't want them to intrude our school. In school there were many people upset by the occuring incident. The school had a two minute silence to honor those that died and that had been injured in the attack. The school had the news on all through the school. After a while I was getting tired of hearing about it because that's all we talked about. I just wanted to forget it all for one day. Later I tried to call my friend to see if she was okay because of earlier she was so upset. Then we talked for a little bit then I let her go. Not the 9/11 is not talked about very much anymore and half mast has been raised, probably because some people just don't want to talk about it anymore and others just get too upset. There is a different new thing that still deals with 9/11. I still feel bad for the people I didn't even know because it's just the thought that someone would do that to inocent people. On 9/11 the whole USA was changed for a long time. September 11th has changed many peoples' lives plus my own. Now the police are on 24 hour a day watch for people to do with bombs and many other things that has to do with the 9/11. Since then there has been many changes that have been taking place that has never done before. The USA has put police and securities in places were people go to get away from everything. Now they have to worry about if something will happen to them in the places that they love with the people that they love. Tell us your story: Shortly after the first plane flew into the WTC, I went to a shop in Bradford, England with my mother to help her buy a new TV. When we entered the shop, the staff were watching a breaking news broadcast about a plane crash into the WTC, apparently an accident. We bought a TV and took it to my mother's home to install it. Every UK channel bore live broadcasts of a second crash into the second tower, and the first pictures of that scene. Reports were coming in of a wave of terrorist hijackings, using loaded passenger aircraft as missiles. Osama Bin Laden featured heavily in the discussions. Our whole family was affected, my parents had visited the building previously. Europeans also worked and died in the globalised WTC buildings, where many of the best in world trade and finance worked. It was an attack on globalisation itself and a challenge to the entire West and the United Nations. At the time we did not realise the full significance of those events. We heard of the incredible bravery of emergency services, of actual passengers on the fateful flights and other innocent victims who lived and worked near the crash sites. But we supported American initiatives to move the front line to Al Qaeda and the Taleban in Afghanistan. There have been maniacal bomb attacks since in Madrid, and London last year. Militarily however, it has become more difficult for the anti-prophet Bin Laden to strike the West in grandiose satanic attacks. Many Muslims died in the London attacks. The vast majority of Muslims reject Al Qaeda and their methods. They are embarrassed and offended by Al Qaeda's claims to represent God and Islam. Young extremists who feel alienated by the West are Al Qaeda's main source of support. In many ways, 9/11 was a watershed in modern history. Prior to 1990, fundamentalist extremists backed by Iran used hijacks and hostage-taking to attempt to secure their demands. After the Lebanon suicide bombings against US Marines, these extremists felt they had a new, successful, inexpensive weapon. Young fanatical extremists. The Cold War ended, there was an interval of 11 years, and a new global conflict started on 9/11 - the worldwide conflict with fanatical fundamentalist extremism, started by Al Qaeda. This conflict started on 9/11 and it will not end until the last suicide bomber is gone. So don't sleep until September ends. Within moments of turning it on, the second plane hit. I recalled feeling this intense fear of war like nothing I had before. I looked at my infant son and thought how selfish I was bringing him into this world. This world, after all, was never to be the same to me. My mouth hung open as tears streamed automatically down my face. Within a couple hours, my oldest son was home from kindergarten. The moment he walked in the door, I immediately burst into tears, feeling like I'd betrayed his innocence as well. The images were live on the tv, as he saw the destruction for the first time. I was unsure what to tell him, but I did my best. He also began to cry. With his voice still muffled to my chest, he told me that he wanted to do something for the children of New York, whose mommies and daddys won't be coming home anymore. He thought sending them all his toys might be comforting, since they always made him feel better when he was scared and lonely. Despite the panic and fear, I felt a little peace. If a horrible act of inhumanity, like this, could bring out the sensitive caring human in children, like mine, perhaps, we could be parents to a new generation. This generation could be blessed with broader vision, hope, and an ernest desire to love and care for its fellow man. An announcement was made on the loudspeaker to go to the closest room with a tv. We were all excited, thinking "Hey, we have a free day to watch tv". We were sadly mistaken. By the time we filed into my 8th grade history teachers classroom, we could hear sniffles. We turned to see our teacher had red, sore eyes as though she'd been crying and a terrified look on her face as her eyes stayed glued to the tv. Tell us your story: After routinely opening the library at 7am CST and getting things organized, my co-workers and I were shocked to hear (from staff that arrived around 8am) that a jet had flown into one of the Towers. Not being familiar with far away New York, we didn't really realize the impact of that statement. We immediately tried to find information about it on the internet and just as quickly, the internet shut down. It was totally overloaded with people worldwide trying to access information about the tragedy. We turned on radios to try to get more info and slowly we were informed of the enormity of the tragedy. I immediately began to say silent prayers to Christ for the wounded and dying and for their families. My younger son called me(unaware of what was happening) and told me that my infant grandson was ill. I immediately left work to go take care of him, but on the drive there I heard that the Pentagon had been attacked. I knew then that this was a well-planned, deliberate attack on the U.S. by someone and that we would go to war. While grieving for the loss of life at the Towers (although at this point I had no idea of how many people were injured), I was fearful for our military who would be called upon to defend us. I wasn't so sure, either, that an attack might not be made upon my own little east Texas town. I reached my son's home and found him watching the TV about the attacks. At this point very little was known except that three planes had hit targets. The fourth had not yet been heroically plowed into the Pennsylvania dirt by Americans trying to save the White House or some other target. My son went on to work and I held my infant grandson and cried as I watched the horrific scene unfold on television. I later went back to work and then went home to watch more coverage on the TV. I watched, cried and prayed. At some point I started writing things in a journal to help me put things in focus. The grief and destruction that I saw on television was something that I had never witnessed in my life of 49 years. It consumed my thoughts for two weeks. However, I worked, went to church, did my normal things that I have to do. Gradually I began to be able to concentrate on other things, but continued to cry each time I saw a picture or image of the horror or the people affected by it. Sweet songs of Christ's love and comfort that I heard on the radio, my Bible readings, times spent at church, and talks with my family, friends and co-workers helped to bring back a semblance of order to my world. I knew that others were not so fortunate. My family and friends became even more precious to me as I, along with the rest of America, realized anew the fragility of life and the need to make each moment important. Patriotism abounded in our little town and flags were seen everywhere. Bumper stickers and posters were displayed and continue to this date, one year later. Today, September 11, 2002, we remember that we are not alone in this world and that people in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania especially are struggling with life and loneliness for their lost loved ones. The survivors, too, are still in the process of finding meaning to it all and many have come to find that God is able to do miraculous things still. Although I know that evil is present and bent on destroying innocent people, God is in control, and that the American spirit cannot be diminished. My children and my three grandchildren can live their lives trusting a holy God and knowing that they are in His love and care. Here is the unedited story: After routinely opening the library at 7am CTS and getting things organized, my co-workers and I were shocked to hear (from staff that arrived around 8am)that a jet had flown into one of the Towers. Not being familiar with far away New York, we didn't really realize the impact of that statement. We immediately tried to find information about it on the internet and just as quickly, the internet shut down. It was totally overloaded with people worldwide trying to access information about the tragedy. We turned on radios to try to get more info and slowly we were informed of the enormity of the tragedy. I immediately began to say silent prayers to Christ for the wounded and dying and for their families. My younger son called me (unaware of what was happening) and told me that my infant grandson was ill. I immediately left work to go take care of him, but on the drive there I heard that the Pentagon had been attacked. I knew then that this was a well-planned, deliberate attack on the U.S. by someone and that we would go to war. While grieving for the loss of life at the Towers (although at this point I had no idea of how many people were injured), I was fearful for our military who would be called on to depend us. My eldest son is an Air Force Special Ops soldier and I knew that somehow he would probably be called upon to face grave danger in the defense of our country. I wasn't so sure, either, that an attack might not be made upon my own little east Texas town. I reached my younger son's home and found him watching the TV about the attacks. I was crying and he seemed confused about it all and asked my why I was crying so hard. I told him "because now all hell will break loose". I truly felt that we might even have to suffer warfare in our own hometown. This all sounds sort of selfish, but my mind raced from the Towers to the Pentagon then to my airman son,Tim. At this point very little was known except that three planes had hit targets. The fourth had not yet been heroically plowed into the Pennsylvania dirt by Americans trying to save the White House or other target. My younger son and I watched the news the rest of the time that I was there, shocked and horrified by what we were watching. My son went on to work and I held my infant grandson and cried as I watched the horrific scene unfold on television. I later went back to work and went home to watch more coverage on TV. I prayed that I would hear from my oldest son and that he would be ok no matter where he was serving. I watched TV, cried, and prayed. I trusted God to take care of my firstborn son as he waa about to do his part in the defense of our nation. At some point I started writing things in a journal to help me put things in focus. Tell us your story: I work 3rd shift and had got off work and went to meet a lady I had been talking with on the internet.We met and talked awhile and when we got back in our cars I heard it on the radio and went back to her car tell her to turn on the radio. I at that time was just thinking it was a small plane that had a problem. I went home and turned on the T.V. and eventually saw the 2nd plane hit. Even after being up all night I couldnt sleep or pry myself away from the television. My son later called me to tell me gas in Indianapolis was already up around $3.00 a gallon so I got up and went to fill up my car and it was like a scene from a movie about the end of the world.
