Tell us your story: I was standing in my office which has an unobstructed view to the south of Madison Avenue when I was told that an aircraft had flown into the World Trade Center. Looking out of the window it struck me what a beautiful day it was,a deep blue sky with not a cloud to be seen.Just a minute later I could see the huge plume of black smoke rising from the south and then the second tower was hit and the plume grew ever larger.Slowly we became aware that the United States was under attack and that our way of life and our freedom was being challenged by an unseen enemy.The plume of smoke darkened the sky and continued unabated for the whole day and into the night.We left the office in silence and in shock at what had happened not only to the city but to the United States. The following day our offices were open for business but of course no work was done and the only phonecalls e-mails and voice mail received was from people wanting to know whether we were safe. At noon that day we closed our offices and all of our staff went the the memorial service St Barts on Park Ave.The church was packed and the service the saddest I have ever attended.We also closed our office at noon on September 11 in 2002 and in 2003. It is the intention to do so every year from now on as long as we are in business. It is my view that the United States and all Americans particularly those of us who witnessed the disaster have changed and we are now much more aware of our surroundings as never before. We are also more grateful for who we are and what the United States stands for. We also understand that the war on terrorism will continue indefinetly. As a foreign born American I can say that this country will never give into the terrorists of the world something President Bush fully understood when he visited Ground Zero in New York City after the attack on our way of life and our values.GOD BLESS AMERICA. I got into second hour Career when all of the seniors, sophmores, and other students were watching t.v. They were telling us to shutup. I thought they were wtching a movie. I went into third hour Algebra, and found out that the World Trade Center (twin towers) had been blown up. I watched the t.v. in there and found out most of the stuff that had happened. Many kids had just laughed at it, until they found out how many deaths there was, and what damage this could do to the lives of all Americans. I was very disturbed because I was born on September 11, 1987. That day was my birthday. Ever birthday that I have from now on I will always think of Osama Bin Laden destroying many families, killing people, and I will also think of Pearl Harbor. I never was interested in History until that day. I have watched the movie Pearl Harbor, and now I am grateful for my freedom because I know it came at a price. I WAS SITTING ON A PLANE AT O'HARE AIRPORT IN CHICAGO, IL, WAITING TO TAKE OFF TO NEW YORK CITY. I WAS CELEBRATING MY 60TH BIRTHDAY WITH MY HUSBAND WHO WAS CELEBRATING HIS 70TH. WE WERE MEETING OUR SON AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW IN NYC. WE HAD DINNER RESERVATIONS AT WINDOWS OF THE WORLD RESTAURANT FOR THAT EVENING. JUST AS WE STARETED TAXIING THE PILOT TOLD US THAT WE WERE RETURNING TO THE GATE WITH NO EXPLAINATION. WE GOT OFF THE PLANE AND FOUND ALL TVS OFF AND GUARD DOGS ALL OVER THE AIRPORT. That day began like every other day before.My Dad woke me up at about 6 a.m., we had breakfast and after that we drove to School in Leer, Germany.I am german and we write our personal story in our history class.I am an exchange stundent and I will spent 10 months in the United States. School went normal like every ohter time.We had to write a maths test,and I can remember that it was not very easy.After school I drove with the school bus to Ween,er,a small city near my home village,call Bunde.School ended at 1 p.m. so I arrived in Weener at about half past 1.My cousin had her 14th Birthday that day so we planned to have a little party.We drank soda and tea and ate cake.It was a nice birthday party.Sometime between half past 3 and 4 p.m. my cousin Christian came into the living room,where everyboday from our family was.He told us that the World Trade Center was hit by a plane.Everybody thought it was an accident,so my cousin went up to his room and watched TV.After a few minutes he came back and told us about the second plane.We realized that that could not be a normal accident,so it must be something more important.My whole family talked about what has happened.But they did not thing about an attack. My cousin, a few ohter family memers and I went upstairs to my cousins rooms,to watch TV.On every single chanel in Germany they had pictures from the burning Twin Towers.On the TV they spoke about an attack,but we could not beliefe that till the news from the plane in Washington D.C. and the one in Pannsilvania came in. The whole day we talked about that.WE asked ourselves why somebody could do this.It was the same in most parts of Germany and Europe.In the evening,after the Twin Towers had collapsed, my mun and I drove back home.We tried to reach a very good friend,who is a member of the german Parliament in Berlin.The Parliament had a meeting till that time,because they counted with attacks in Germany.Everywhere was police and fire fighters the days after September 11. At that evening everybody went to bed late,everybody wanted to see the news and the pictures which came to us from America.Everybody in my family was crying as they saw the people juming out the WTC.It was not an easy day for America, but it was also not an easy day in Germany and Europe.Everybody was afraid and nobody knew what to do. The next day we spoke about what was happened in school.The teachers wanted us to understand,although you can not understand what was goning on in the heads of the Al Kaida members.Many people wanted to help the americans and they sent money and other things over.Not just americans died in the WTC, there were also offices from german banks.A lot of nations lost some of their people. September 11 was not an attack on the USA,it was an attack on the western world.Many people were ciying like in the United States.Sure it happened in the USA but you were and you are not alone with your sadness. Tell us your story: I was devasted when I saw the buildings come down, and one of my co-workers came in and told us that they had also hit the Pentagon. All I could think of that God was telling us to wake up and realize that the end was very near. It has broke my heart that we as Americans have had to go through this type of terror. We are a free country and we should not have to live in fear to go to work or to fly across the country. I thank God that he has put a godly man in the White House to lead us through this disaster. I have nothing but respect and admiration for President Bush and I am glad that I voted for him. I pray for him and for our future, it is so hard to look back and think of all the horrific things I have seen in my life time and I pray that my grandchildren will never have to witness the things that I have in my lifetime. I got ready and rushed out of my house to attend school at Miami Dade Community College. I recall being stuck in traffic and tunning into Y-100 (a local radio station). Y-100 has a morning show in which they constantly play pranks on everyone. This particular morning of September 11th, Y-100 was live with a reporter and a witness from New York City who stated that there was an explotion in The World Trade Center. (I didn't even know that the Twin Towers were also called The World Trade Center.) I thought to myself: "these people have gone too far... If they ever have something important to tell the listeners no one is ever going to believe them.". I got to school and when I was in class I overheard the girl sitting next to me mention she believed it was a terrorist attack. Then it hit me, I realized everything was true, they were not joking around. Obviously, no one was able to concentrate we all kept talking about the incident, so I decided to go home and watch the news. When I got home, my mom was in front of the TV watching Channel 23 (Univision-spanish channel). As I got closer to the TV the second airplane hits the other tower. I was so devistated I could not believe such a thing. September 11th impacted me forever. May God bless all those families who have suffered. I know what it feels like. My cousin works at the Pentagon and my family went through moments of grief as well. Fortunately, we did receive the call. My cousin survived. "I need to speak with you in the back, now!", she stated. I assumed that there was a cranky passenger in First Class and continued to read my newspaper. As soon as we touched the ground, the Captain spoke to the passengers from the cockpit. "Ladies and Gentlemen, I have some very bad news to report to you" he said. "The World Trade Center has been attacked and all of the planes in this country have been grounded. We were asked to turn around and head back, but we did not have enough fuel, so we are the last plane in the air. The Airport in Denver is closed, there are no more rent cars, and the hotels are full, so good luck." As we made our way to the gate, and the door was opened, I asked the Flight Attendant why she was crying. "We lost one of our planes", she said. I was stunned to see the airport completely empty and concerned when I saw all of the lines at the rental car counters and pay phones. I quickly proceeded to the rent car bus and was granted admittance only because I had reservations. This was a supposed to be a routine trip to Denver. I got a nice car and decided to head to my hotel. The hotel was full, but I persisted and the lovely clerk allowed me to check in early. I immediately called my wife and calmed her concerns, then headed to the office. I had a difficult time entering the hospital where I worked, because it was completly locked down, so I worked from another office. It was a couple of days before the airport was scheduled to open again. The rent car company suggested that I drive the car back to Dallas, and I did. Straight through, by myself in thirteen hours. I hugged my wife and three children while they slept that night. I never take anything in this world for granted from that painful day, forward. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Our family had two near misses that day. 1. My wife works for WorldCom in Pentagon City, across from Fashion City. She felt the explosion when the plane hit the Pentagon. (The plane's flight path went just to the north of her building.) She and two of her co-workers rushed outside. When they realized what had happened, her two co-workers, who were ex-EMTs, rushed to the Pentagon. When she got the OK to go home around 10:00 AM, it took her 7 hours to get home. It took her 5 hours to get out of the area. All the streets were closed. She and her vehicle were "commandeered" by a fireman to take him to a local apartment fire. He had no way to get there nor any equipment as all the fire trucks were at the Pentagon. 2. A relative, who was 8 months pregnant, works in the American Express building in NYC, next to the World Trade Center. When the first building was struck, she headed to her building's garage to get her car and leave. She was told, while enroute to the garage, by building personnel that everything was "under control". She wisely ignored the horrible advice. As she was leaving the building, she saw the second plane hit. Fortunately, for us and our family, we have only "near-miss" stories. Tell us your story: My story isn't as heartbreaking as those of the New York Fire Department or as tragic as those who lost loved ones in the attacks on September 11th, but it is nonetheless my story. I live in a small town about one hour west of Chicago where nothing extraordinary ever seems to happen, but the attacks changed that, as well as the lives of everyone around the world. Never again will I take my safety in this country for granted. The day started out like any other, I got ready to go to class at the local community college about 15 minutes from my home and was waiting to be picked up by a friend when I heard the news. My dad called from work to say that he had heard a plane hit the one of the World Trade Towers and to turn on the television. My first reaction was that it was just a tragic accident and that only a small plane had hit the tower. By the time I turned on the t.v. the second plane had already hit and my mom and I rushed upstairs to turn on that t.v. because there was a terrible glare on the t.v. we had first turned on. At that time my friend rang the doorbell and I told her what had happened. We both went upstairs to watch the t.v. with my mom for a few minutes before we had to leave. We all just stood there, none of us speaking, we didn't know what to say and I don't think any of us truely understood the full implications of what was happening. Those few minutes passed quickly and before we knew it we were running late and had to tear ourselves from the t.v. The ride to the college was unreal. Every radio station we turned on had news of the attacks and terrorism was being hinted at. While driving to the college the Pentagon was hit and fear went through my body. It was so scary to know what was happening but not being able to see it or know what was going to happen next. A mile or two before we reached the college we had to stop at my friend's aunt's house to drop off some Mary Kay makeup and while we were there the first tower fell. We were speechless and all I could think about was the people who didn't make it out in time. By the time we reached the college it seemed like everyone we talked to knew what was happening and none of us felt like being in class. We all just wanted to find a t.v. and watch the tragedy unfold. When our teacher arrived she was completely clueless as to what had happened and all of us started talking at once to explain the situation. After hearing the news she wanted to be near a t.v. as badly as we did and she canceled class so we could find a t.v. on campus to watch. It only took us a few minutes to find a t.v. and the one we found was located in the center of one of the halls and already a ton of people had gathered around it. It seemed like all the teachers had canceled classes and every seat in the area around the t.v. was taken. It became standing room only and there was no room to get by anyone. My friend and I watched for awhile and then decided to find a less crowded location where we could sit down. We spent the better part of two hours in the cafeteria watching t.v. and waiting for our next classes to begin. My class started on time and this teacher wasn't as sympathetic as the last. We had class, but everyone was distracted and learning algebra just didn't seem important. I couldn't wait for class to be over so I could go home. I just couldn't believe what had happened and was thirsty for more news. Class eventually ended an hour and fifteen minutes later and my friend and I headed home. The rest of the day was spent talking about the attacks with my family and keeping a vigil over the t.v. I never lost anyone in the attacks, but my life changed forever in just those few moments on the morning of September 11th, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was snug in my bed in San Jose, California, thousands of miles from the site of the unfolding tragedy. I grabbed for the ringing phone, my boyfriend's voice came through the line, yelling, "Turn on the TV, turn on the TV." My response coming from an unawakened mind, was, "Stop yelling, I was asleep. What's wrong with you?" I turned on the TV but the pictures didn't make sense and I didn't want to comprehend what my favorite news announcer was saying. My boyfriend's brother, Don, was a commerical airline pilot living in Maryland. His route on Sept. 11 was to begin in Washington, D.C. His wife didn't know if he was still in transit to D.C. as a passenger or if he had already left D.C. as a pilot. Cell phones became necessaties that day. My boyfriend called one of his five siblings on his cell, I called another on my cell, while he and I were connected on our land lines. We contacted all the possible sources of information, which at that point yielded nothing. Don didn't always remember to turn on his cell phone; we prayed that was the case this day. Hoping for an update from his sister in Pennsylvania I called her again. Just as we began our conversation the Pennyslvania crash was announced. I said, "Oh, Kathy, something's happening near you." Having heard a loud noise she ran outside. The sky was beginning to fill with black smoke. She assured me she was okay. It was after 2:00, my time, before we had news on our pilot. He was in flight to South Carolina when he was ordered to put down immediately. Don was safe. As my 12 and 16 year old daughter's left for school that day they expressed their confusion at my fear and tears. Unfortunately, by the time they came home that afternoon they understood, and felt the same as I. By God's grace, I didn't personally know anyone who was injured or killed that day; my heart still aches for those who did. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was calling a friend about taking our daughters to the beach that morning. She immediately told me a plane had just flew into one of the WTC towers. In disbelief, I turned on the television in time to see the second plane hit. Having grown up in Connecticut, I visited the WTC several times during school trips. I can still remember taking the large elevators to the observation deck with tall glass windows overlooking the entire city, and beyond. Watching those buildings fall, knowing there were many people still trapped inside, was heart wrenching. During my military career, I actually worked in the Pentagon. I had always thought that was one of the safest and well protected buildings to be in. It was quite a shock to see that building also damaged. I'm so proud of the passengers and crew on flight 93 who had the courage and determination to prevent that plane from hitting it's intended target. They willingly risked their own lives, thus saving the lives of others. I also have so a lot respect for the men and women who had the horrific task of recovering the remains, working round the clock. I still can't comprehend just how cruel anyone can be - to use our own passenger planes with innocent people onboard as weapons in our country. I pray it will never be repeated. May God bring comfort to the family and friends who lost those they love that day and help them move on with their own lives. God bless the USA. A co-worker asked me to come over by his desk to see this picture of the World Trade Centers. As we watched the news coverage of the first tower up in smoke a second plane came in. I couldn't believe my eyes. Who on earth could be so heartless?? And why?? After awhile I went back to my work checking the news periodically only to find out that a plane had also hit the Pentagon and another had crashed somewhere in PA. I went home that day for lunch just to verify what I had saw on the websites. It just didn't sink in. Not until my 3 year old asked my that evening why someone would do that. I cried trying to explain to him what had happened and that there are some very bad people out there that had killed a lot of innocent people. Every now and then he builds two towers with his Legos and again asks why someone would fly planes into those two buildings. It scares me that he remembers and I only hope that I explained things to him without scaring him. I again cried today remembering all the people that lost their lives a year ago and all the family that is left to grieve their loss. Tell us your story: I am a second grade teacher at a Charter school in Louisiana, so on September 11th I had no idea of the tragedies that were taking place in our country. My assistant stepped out of the classroom, and she heard the news. I thought she was crazy when she came back into the classroom and told me that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon had been hit with terriorist planes. I told her that she must have gotten wrong information, because "that is impossible!" Boy, was I wrong. I went on with the day, not telling the children of the horrible events. I went straight home to get the right information, I thought. I cried all night, and still to this day I cry everytime I think about 9-11-01. My husband asks me why I watch the shows, why I read the books, and why I still let it bother me so much. I would feel guilty if I didn't let it bother me so much. I thank God everyday for my husband and my family. This is a day that we can not stop feeling. See ya' in the summer." Needless to say, I had no idea how profound an experience we were all in for. My husband had awakened me with a freightening tone in his voice. Something bad was happening and I couldn't understand what he was trying to tell me. He turned the T.V. up and I saw the first plane that hit the tower still smoking, then it dawned on me that we were seeing people being killed. Then the second plane hit just after he left for work. I was preparing to go to work myself when my friend called me to tell me that our home office contacts in Stamford, CT could not be located. (some of which had been working out of the trade center in New York). I tried franticly to reach my son in D.C. to no avail. (my friends son was in the same dorm as my son - they were next door roomies.) Her son managed to call and tell her that the Pentagon had been hit, and everyone was in a panic to know what they do. She told him to try and find my son to have him contact me and let me know that he's alive and still kicking. Then the phone lines were cut off - no one could call in or out except emergency persons. For 6 of the worlds longest hours we could not find him. Finally, a friend of ours who worked in the Pentagon called to let us know that she had checked on the boys and they were fine. The school was on lockdown and they were given instructions on evacuation and safety procedure in case of emergency. Thank GOD they kept clear heads and were able to survive to finish out the school year. Little by little, they told of the fear and anxiety that they went through. Even today, they still have a hard time believing that some peanut gallery of nuts would have the lack of judgement to attack the U.S.A. So do I. At about 8:55 i received a call from one of the wives of a co worker stating a plane had just hit one of the towers. We were all turning on radios and calling people to get information. We didn't know if we were at war or what, we were all terrified of not knowing. Our payroll manager had a son who traveled alot for his business and she was trying by phone and e-mail to get ahold of him to see if he knew anything. By now the second and third planes had hit at the forth was in flight. First we heard it was going be shot down then we heard it had crashed in shanksville, Pa. Our payroll manager still had not gotten ahold of her son, so she left for lunch to be with her husband. I got a call from her after 11:30 or so and she was crying, her son Mark Bingham was on flight 93 and the plane had gone down. We all were heartbroken for her and her husband Jerry, But it was some comfort for them knowing that there son went down a fighting hero and we thank them "all" and will always remember the Hereos of Flight 93. The news is always on in the morning while I sleep in, and only do I pay attention if something strikes my interest. Yet I was especially sleepy that morning as I vaugely heard something about a plane crash. "How horrible, an accident..." I remember thinking as I dozed back off, wanting to enjoy every last moment of sleep that I could. Ten minutes later I heard that the second world trade center tower had been hit by another plane. "This was no accident," I thought to myself as I jolted up in bed. All I could do was stare at the television and wonder what was happening. Being all alone in the room, I felt more alone than I ever had in my life. My next thought was, "Oh no, what will they do next?" Feeling very alone and vulnerable I picked up the phone and called my sister to talk to her about it. She hadn't heard yet, so I told her what little I knew about the situation. From that moment on, I was watching television for the next 16 hours, trying to get some kind of understanding as to what was happening. The rest of the day all I could do was wonder things like "Why?", "What next?", and "Who did this?". Waiting for answers and not getting any was the most difficult thing. As an American during peace time, it was incredibly trying for me to understand the motive of the terrorists as well as the vulnerability the United States was experiencing. Never again will I feel totally safe and secure. I thought our country was invinsible and untouchable. Although I was wrong, I know that the United States comes closer than any other nation can. We were just about to go to our next class, when a pera-pro came into our room and told Mrs. Pekink to turn on the T.V. That was when the 2nd plane hit. My eyes filled up with tears. I couldnt comprehend why on earth someone would do this. I was shocked and knew that right then and there our freedom was taken away from us. I knew that we were going to WAR.. I came home, had a quick conference call with a client and hopped in the shower before heading down to a 9:00 AM meeting at Sears Tower. I flipped on the TV to watch CNBC while I got dressed and the first plane had just hit. I remember how small it looked. People were speculating that it was a private plane of some kind. I remember thinking 'what kind of idiot flew into that building' and 'i wonder how far the market will go down because of this stupid thing'. How wrong I was. I saw the second plane hit live, like so many of us. Total shock. I couldn't stop crying. And I still cry a lot now. Whenever I think of the magnitude of it all. I spent the next 48 hours glued to the TV, phone and internet. Any means possible to get more information. Most of my family is in New York and my brother is in Boston. The phone lines were all down out there. Somehow we all had the same inclination -- if we can't make long distance calls, at least we can get on line. And slowly slowly slowly we all found eachother. By two or three that afternoon we had accounted for the immediate family. With each hour after that the circle would expand a little further, as news of safe friends and family members and loved ones trickled in. By Wednesday morning I was breathing a huge sigh of relief. "At least we are the lucky ones. All present and accounted for". I spoke too soon. Several hours later I received a call from a friend in Seattle telling me of another friend who had just started working for Cantor several weeks earlier. "Carl's not accounted for", he said. The next phone call was from my five year old niece. The F-14's were patrolling near their house in Riverdale, the sirens were non-stop, the ash was blowing as far North as 235th Street and she wanted to know where I thought the rest of the bad guys were. I lied. I said they were all dead. That night I tore myself away from the news to run to the supermarket. My meeting had been rescheduled for Thursday (the first day that Sears Tower would be re-opened) but I told my clients that I did not intend to be there. Everyone wanted to meet at my loft instead. I figured it would be nice to have some pastry and stuff to serve them. I'll never forget the scene at the store. Everyone so subdued. Looking at eachother -- are you okay? Yes, I'm okay, are you okay? And so on. Like everyone else, my life has changed dramatically since September 11. I got divorced. I got a new job. I tell my family and friends how much I love them much more often. I don't worry about the little stuff anymore. I'm more measured in what I do. I still fly a lot. I'm a little more aware of what's happening around me when I travel. I cry much more easily. And don't laugh quite as hard or quite as often. And I'm much more honest with people about everything. Even my niece. I told her the truth. The bad guys are not all dead. And there are lots of them. But you have your family and a country full of people who are going to do everything in their power to make sure none of those bad guys ever do anything that will hurt you. Tell us your story: I was at my desk in The Pentagon that morning when my boss' wife called on the phone to say that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. I was able to access the CNN Web Site and my boss walked down to the General's office to watch what was to enfold on TV. Shortly, thereafter, he can running back to our office to tell us that he watched the second plane's impact. One of my office mates asked the question if another plane could attack us in The Pentagon. I argued against that possibility. Being utterly unaware of what was to happen, I told my boss that I was going to The Pentagon gym so that I could return and set up a noon meeting I had organized. 20 minutes lated the third plane hit The Pentagon. The plane headed directly for my office on the B Ring. The plane penetrated rings E,D and puched a hole through the far wall on ring C, but did not hit the B ring. The people in our office were thrown backward by the concussion of the impact, but were otherwise okay. All in our office escaped the building okay. My boss bruised his posterior in the blast. (I kidded him that I would put him in for a Purple Heart.) I was in the gym on the other side of The Pentagon. I heard and felt nothing. I only found out by watching CNN Headline News. I was able to call my wife and father at their homes to say I was OK. I walked out of doors with my gym clothes and my Pentagon badge. I watched from the North Parking area and listened to the radio for 45 minutes or so. We were ordered to leave immediately becuase we were told another plane was due in.
