Tell us your story: all of the inspectors had been greeting the public that day, making sure they were helped to cast their votes..when a few of us heard ..well it sounded like a car crash, but from a distance!..we didnt pay too much mind to it at first. a man with a transistor radio came in to vote and told me that a plane had hit the world trade center..at first i just looked at him like you gotta be kidding!..i then went out side and people were kinda schuffling out side and talking about the plane..I walked to my friends house and there was only one station on television.I couldnt believe what i saw..and only moments later as we watched the second tower get hit. my friend and i were screaming ..i couldnt believe it "all the people, in there" I wasnt totally out of it untill i heard that the pentagon was hit as well..that's when I was truely afraid..I thought we were all dead! I thought where is our government?..I then went as fast as i could go to the bus stop, to get my son outta school..he goes to school located down town brooklyn, not far from the bridge..I couldnt believe the smoke it reminded me of a london fog horror movie ..the smoke and debree were intense.I got my child and we hitched hiked back home I only had 5 dollars on me and all the atm's were down..a perfect stranger handed me another 5 dollars to help me and my son get home..the only car service in the area was loaded with people waiting their turn to get a ride to their homes..i had asked a man in a red car to please take my son and I home and i payed him the 10 dollars. later on..and after trying to call into manhattan,because my daughter attends high school there.mayor rudy..opened up train service ..I then went and got into manhattan...going over the bridge it was hard to see anything,and not because of the smoke but my tears wouldnt stop..I keep thinking about "all those people" i got to my daugters school to find out that had released her..even though i called and told them to keep her there .and i was coming for her..she had signed a log to where she was going..and she was alright..on the way home and finally getting into a bklyn bound train I was in the subway when building 7 fell..we had to be rerouted back uptown..well it took 5 hours to get back home ...I'm grateful that I was able to get back home...so many werent so fortuate!.The next two days my daugter and I volunteered in the armory. on lex. ave.I couldnt go back another day the mass amount of families and friends of the missing were phenomonal. but I remember 1 elderly woman who just gave out white roses! Tell us your story: "Total Recall"By Daniel Bivona Ladder 84 I wrote this letter for the following reasons: In honor of victims and country, for the healing of myself and others, and for giving recognition to the unrecognized. "Total Recall" was a term that I have never heard in my 20-year career as a NYC firefighter, but the unimaginable and unspeakable destruction of life had just happened.On the bus ride to the Staten Island Ferry, one fellow firefighter stood and led us in reciting the "Our Father." He did this to help us do our best in helping those in need. We were aware of the incomprehensible devastation we were about to bare witness to. We stood on the bridge with the ferry captain at the helm and gazed in silence at the smoke that now replaced the Twin Towers. Getting off the ferry, we were greeted by a frantic mass of people, covered in gray soot, fleeing the city. Many of them reached out to touch our coats, and a woman said, "God bless you and may He watch over you." The air and soot was getting thicker, and with each step we took, the mountain of destruction was becoming surreal. Twisted I-beams formed an interwoven web that looked like a huge roller-coaster track. Emergency vehicles were torn in half. City buses appeared to be the victims of their own bomb blasts. I prayed that I would wake up from this nightmare. We reached what is known as "Ground Zero." Time stood still as we began digging for survivors. We were asked to report to City Hall. Truck and engine officers were told to form separate lines as firefighters stood by impatiently waiting their assignments. Cut off from outside communications, rumors of more incoming hijacked planes were circulating as F-14 fighter jets screamed above the smoke. Seven World Trade Center collapsed behind us, and we were chased by an avalanche of debris and blinded by the smoke. Unable to regroup, we freelanced the burning buildings and rubble for hours, yielding no results of survivors. Exhausted and beaten, I felt empty and defeated. I questioned how it was possible to save no one out of this mass of victims.The next day my wife received a call from the wife of a missing firefighter. The numbers of the missing began to change to names. On our return, night was transformed to day under glaring spotlights. I gazed up at this mountain of rubble, and I felt helpless and small. We all held onto the hope that we would pull a survivor from this smoldering tomb of twisted steel. As we dug above what I believed was an elevator car, I envisioned in my mind opening the hatch and seeing my friend, Frank Esposito of Engine 235,saying "Dan, what took you so long?" As the dream faded, I continued to pray for hope. Two horns blasted. We were told to come down from the pile of rubble. There was danger of further collapse. When we returned, cadaver dogs were digging everywhere. The dogs seemed confused. Death was all around us.On Sept. 11 we believed that over 6,000 people lost their lives. The New York City Fire Department lost 12 percent of its men working that day. All of the rescue workers, who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others, also laid down their lives for this great country. Now my heart and eyes fill with emotion every time I hear "God Bless America." Fire Department Chaplain [Rev. Mychal] Judge, was one of the first to die. I believed it was so that he could smooth out the jagged edges of our pain. Father Judge will be at the gates of heaven to personally escort every individual in, with a smile on his face and these words on his lips: "Lord, take me where you want me to go. Let me meet who you want me to meet. Tell me what you want me to say and keep me out of your way." I was moved by the outpouring of support from everyone. I say "Thank you" to all the volunteers, some of who traveled great distances to get here. "Thank you" to all the ironworkers and wreckers. Tell us your story: As a school teacher I was in class with 9th graders teaching government.I had just put an original paper from the bombing of Pearl Harbor away when I received a text message on my phone from CNN. It read a plane has flown into a building in New York. I quietly leaned over to a student to go the the library for a tv and video connection. It was about 9:10 a.m. For the remainder of the day students in my class and school stayed glued to the TV. We watched the second plane go into the building and heard reports from the Pentagon. I sat on the heater by the window of my classroom as students watched in awe the happenings on TV. I called a friend in DC, Quannah- just 2 miles from the Pentagon. She was in the street crying with her neighbor who knew people on the American flight and flew as an Attendant for American. Quannahs' husband worked in the Pentagon but was in Korea at the time. My students didn't know what to think. Quannah cried that she heard the plane go by the house...she heard the explosions. I could still hear explosions in the background as we spoke. Students kept coming in my room. Classes congregated in rooms where there were televisions. A room that normally had 30 kids now had 50. They were quiet and respectful, but where full of questions as to why would it happen. Kids checked the internet about the Pentagon and found it had been dedicated on September 11. One boy was very upset, yet couldn't verbalize why... he came back the next day and told me his Aunt worked at the Pentagon and made it out safely. I remember the superintendent of schols came by to make sure the kids were fine. It was a memorial day as a teacher and one I hope I don't have to repeat. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001. It seems so long ago. On the morning of September 11, I woke up, just like every other morning. I got dressed and prepared for school. At the time, I was a senior in high school, but I was also in a work study program with the Department of Defense, so I had to make sure I looked nice to go to work as well. The day continued on as any school day does, listening to teachers, trying not to fall asleep, the usual thing. I can not even remember exactly where I was when I first heard rumors about a plane. The funny thing was, in high school, the administrators didn?t like to tell you much of anything, so rumors were flying and different stories were formed. I can?t even remember them. Even now, 3 years after that fateful day, my memory hasn?t unclogged itself enough to understand what was going on. Because I was a work study, I got to leave school early each day of the week to go to work. As rumors flew, I chatted with friends, attempting to gain some semblance of understanding. I finally left and went home, which took about 3 minutes. When I arrived home, my mom was there, partially asleep in bed. She works night work, so she?s generally unaware of what goes on during the day. She was, however, only partially asleep. I went into my mom?s room, trying to wake her up and figure out what was going on when she told me my dad had called. He lived about 2 hours or so away (depending on how fast I speed) and so we talked on occasion. I hit play on the answering machine and I heard a desperate message from my father. ?Sheila, planes hit the World Trade Center. I don?t care what happens, don?t you dare go to work. I don?t care if they fire you, it doesn?t matter, do NOT go to work.? That?s all I really remember of the phone message, a strict warning I had best heed. I dialed the phone to my office, thinking if I was really necessary, I didn?t have much of a choice. One of the women in our office picked up the phone, I think it was Sharon, and I asked her what was going on. ?We?re not emergency essential personnel. Everyone?s locking up and going home. Don?t come, we?re leaving.? Ok, I thought? I don?t guess I?m going to work today. I changed and I suppose I bummed around the house, calling loved ones, assuring them I was safe and not at work (working for the government has its down sides). When I look back to that day, it all feels so surreal, like a dream that I can watch happening to me, but that I?m not actually in. That?s how a lot of my traumatic memories are, something I can watch without participating in, just seeing myself go through the motions in response. That is how I remember September 11th. I see myself making the phone calls, talking to relatives, assuring them of my safety and wondering what actually happened. I remember days after it was over, talking in my AP English class about our own reactions, what it was we felt, fear or confusion. I was thankful, both parents were safe. Some friends had been in fear that day; I was spared the overwhelming anxiety of that emotion. I do however, realize the consequences. The effects of September 11th remain, despite living what seems is to be so very far away. It all seemed like a bad dream, the nightmare of this country, but I find that this reality has shaped our nation, into something stronger and more united than before. Then the news hit. People just started coming in from the street to tell us what was happening. One girl stayed on the phone the whole time and told us about the Pentagon being hit. Someone else told us about the first tower collapsing. We all continued to exercise, but in a zombie-like state. We didn't know what else to do. I felt so much comraderie that day, but also so alone. For around six months I went on with life in a depressed state of mind. Now that the anniversary approached I have the same feelings all over again. I feel guilty laughing, but I am too busy crying. I loved the feeling of gentle peacefulness that I felt from everyone right after the attacks. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 began like any other day for me...I dressed and drove to Belleview High School, where I was working as a secretary in the Media Center. At the time the first plane crashed into the tower of the World Trade Center, I was in the office to pick up some things for the Media Center. Along with several guidance counselors and secretaries, I watched in horror as the first plane struck. We all thought it was some sort of bizarre accident...I remember running back across the campus to the Media Center to turn the television on to CNN. Within a very few minutes, the second plane struck the other tower. We watched in disbelief as the commentators pointed at the smoke and flames that now billowed from both towers. Students filed out of classrooms as the bell rung for classes to change...some stayed in the Media Center to gather with the Media Specialists and myself to watch this awful story unfold. By the time the third plane struck the Pentagon, it began to feel like it might be the end of the world! Many students now filled the Media Center...watching, crying, some of them hugging friends who had relatives in the Towers, some praying quietly. I ran to the phone to call home and let my husband know what was happening. I asked him not to tell my 14 year old daughter, wanting to explain to her myself, not wanting her to be afraid without me home to hold her. My husband could not believe what I was telling him...we quickly finished our hurried conversation so that I could return to the news. I cannot describe the horror I still feel when I close my eyes...I can still see the images of the planes crashing into the buildings, the people jumping from windows, the faces of the people as they ran from the area. As the towers fell, my tears did also...and as I stood there weeping, the Pledge of Allegiance began to play over the school's loudspeaker. My librarian was so overcome that she could not lead the students in reciting the Pledge. I was barely able to speak past the lump in my own throat. Never had those familiar words meant so much to me. In the days that followed, the Media Center's television was constantly tuned in to CNN so that we could participate, from a distance, in the memorial services, public addresses and prayer vigils that occurred in the wake of these horrendous attacks. Today, I prayed for all of the families that lost loved ones in the attacks, to find peace and healing, to never forget that in the darkest days of America's recent history, we saw the light of America shine its very brightest...in the heroes who perished saving the lives of others, in the courage that continues to make America great. The morning of Sept 11th started out like any other day. We were paving a bridge in Gackle North Dakota, out in the middle of no where. I was lying in a ditch waiting for another truck to deliver asphalt to us when my dad pulled up in his company pickup and very sadly yelled to get in and listen to the radio. The first thing I heard was reporters from CNN gasping and yelling that there is a second plane that just hit the other tower. All day we worked and watched many planes fly over us to Bismark airport. By the end of the day, not a plane was in sight. I couldn't imagine the scenes I would see on the television once we got back to the hotel. I was shocked, very confused, and very sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to all that have suffered from 9-11. Even today, I show more patriotism than ever before. Everytime I see a flag, I get this proud feeling. I think of those who died that day and pause for just a moment in my life to remember. All sorts of questions were asked? Who? What? Why? How could this happen in America? It was difficult to comprehend the full picture. It was more like we were watching a horrible movie. We were joined by a young Iranian friend. He has been here many years as a student and now as a professional. I believe that he was uncomforable as we watched. Tears were in our eyes and we all felt drawn to watch as often as we could that day. 9/11/01 made me sit and write my special thoughts to my children. They needed to know how I felt about the world and especially about them. Life is not the same anymore. Nothing is taken for granted. Each time we speak, we tell the other that we love them. Tell us your story: I remember the day before sitting in American History talking about the wars that had happened, and the boy sitting behind me asked the teacher, "Do you think we will go to war again?" and the teacher replied, " No, because there is much equipment now that the government uses that we know everything that going on around the world." The next day the same teacher came into the gym and said go to your classrooms and turn on the TV because America is under attack. It was the scariest thing I believe I had ever felt. My mom rushed down to get my brother my the middle school, and coming to check me out of school. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was at home in Hudson, Florida when I witnessed the attacks on The World Trade Center via television news. It was very real and very traumatic as I had worked on the 73rd floor of 2WTC for 6 years. I was the Floor Warden in charge of the Fire Safety Team on that floor. My Agency of the State of New York had been the first tenant on the 73rd floor in the year 1974. The building was still under construction at the entrances to the plaza, the plaza itself was not complete, upper floors in 2WTC were not yet complete. I had worked for another State Agency at 199 Church St, NY, NY for another 11 years or more. 199 Church St is about 6 blocks north of the WTC. In one way or another, I worked in, visited or saw the WTC for almost 20 years. It seemed impossible to believe that anyone could want to kill and injure so many people. It is a miracle that more were not killed. For all who criticize the buildings for collapsing, eventually, many of us realize that the fact that they stood up as long as they did saved countless lives. I did not have a dry eye for weeks. I still cannot believe it happened. I am not forgetting the deaths in the Pentagon and the deaths in Pennsylvania; it is just that the WTC is so much more personal. I have not returned to the site [Ground Zero] as I am not ready for it even now. May God bless the vitims who died as a result of the attacks, may God bless the survivors, may God bless America. As everyone, I thought it was a small plane. I turned on the TV at work and the second plane hit. It was such a shocked, frozen moment when the reality, that it couldnt be an accident, registered. I wasn't near New York, I never have been there and knew that I wouldnt be able to go and help, but in that time, we all seemed to become a part of New York and New York became America. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was sitting in my world cultures honors class, dreading the fact that I was stuck there for another 80 minutes of boredom. I had done my homework as usual, and we were reviewing all the important information we would need to know for the next day's assignment. The class continued to be a tedious one, like any other day at Northwestern Lehigh High School, and I assumed it would be this way the rest of the year. Later in the period, we had gotten word from another teacher to turn on the television sets, only to stare in horror at the vivid pictures consuming the small screens. A plane had struck the World Trade Center, and all I could think was New York would never be the same. My mind wandered into thinking if I knew anyone that would be in that area, on that given day. I could think of no one. During this time, I don't think there was anyone in the whole entire class who spoke a single word except for the teacher, who seemed so awestruck by the mystery of the attack. After moving to second period, I sat down in trigonometry, only to watch the television for the rest of the period. Then, after lunch, I marched into English Honors class to again fill my mind with plaguing questions about the attack from watching the television. My English teacher, a New York native, was appalled and shocked by the attack. Her son, who was in New York, was all she could think about. No one said anything the whole class, and when we finally were preparing to leave the class, President George Bush was getting ready to make a speech about the atrocity. The bell rang, and no one moved from his or her seats. We were all enthralled with the speech that our terrified President was making. About 10 minutes later, we all finally budged from our chairs and continued on with the day. I don't think I have ever been so relieved to be at my home. I felt so much more comfortable knowing I was with my family, and we would all be together if something had happened later. I did have to work that night, but since being at Wal-Mart with my friends is like my second family, I didn't mind being there with the people I knew. Every customer that came through my line was concerned about the attacks. The people I talked to each shared a different opinion about who they thought would be behind such a catastrophe. Each person, however, had the same look of disbelief on his or her face. September 11, 2001 will never be the same in my mind, nor will it be for the rest of America. The terrorism that we faced only will make us stronger, and more close to one another. When I grow older, and I look back on today, I will think of how just one day changed the patriotism that America will hold dearly in it's heart, for years to come. I was in My Room watching Television wnen I saw the Bulletin, I promptly called My In-laws and told Them to turn on Their Television, then I went across the hall and joined Them. We were stunned and saddened, it was so hard to see all of this happening, I think We all walked around in a daze. All of the Machines in the Casinos were quiet, nobody felt like Gambling. We were scheduled to leave on the thirteenth, but could not get a confirmed Flight until the sixteenth, We called the desk and told Them We would need Our Rooms for a few more days. They complied and informed Us that since We would probably be there until the weekend, They usual policy was to raise the Rates on the weekends, which They did.When We finally left Las Vegas for Flint, Michigan, We were glad to get back Home, when we arrived at the Terminal in Flint, My Brother-in-law went to get My car from the parking lot, the attendent there didn't charge Us for the extra days. The difference in Locales was amazing. I would be proud to have this printed and displayed at The Smithsonian, since in 1945, I was a Government Worker in Washington D.C. My Brother had arrived to use may Shower as his Electricity was out. We then headed off to his restaurant for our lunch time shift. We had a big screen T.V. I had to have an emergency C-Section which left me in the hospotal for 5 days. On the morning of September 11, I woke around 7:30 and decided to watch television. I dozed on and off thru-out the morning, curtesy of the pain medication. I remeber waking up and seeing the news on, and I almost changed the station. I woke just in time to see the second plane crashing into the towers. I remember feeling this horrible, deep pain inside. All I knew is that I wanted my son with me, because I was so afraid. What next, the hospitals? I remeber thinking that I could be next. If they could take over 4 major airliners and crash them into the twin towers, the PENTAGON (our security headquarters!), and pretty much anywhere they pleased, they could start taking our only source of recovery- the doctors and the new little lives, our babies. I spent the day watching the coverage on television with one of the nurses on duty and never once letting go of my future. I have since dedicated 6 pages of his scrapbook to the memory of September 11, 2001. I think it is very important that he understands the relevance of that day, when he's old enough to understand about the lives lost and the feelings of insecurity that swept across our nation. The children came to school that day talking about an airplane hitting a building. The children's stories were mix with reality and fantasy as is the case many times with young children. I thought how could it be! I was just at home 45 minutes ago. I never had a clue that anything so horrific that occured. Even when the principal came around to each room and told everyone what had happened it still did not sink in what had actually happend. I sat in the teacher's lounge listening to teachers talk at lunchtime and still I could not get a grip on what had happened. It wasn't until I got home and turned on the television did it really hit me that our country had been attacked by terrorists. Myself, as I am sure many feel,the hardest part of this act of war is unlike past wars, it is hard to tell who the enemy is that we are fighting. Osma is only part of the problem. I pray that our leaders will be guide to get the people responsible without more innocent people dying. As I look back 1 year from 9/11 I found an interesting coincidence in my life. During my 54 years I have lived through 3 major American tragedies. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle and the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. When I heard the news of each of these events I was in a school. I was a sophmore in high school in English literature class when President Kennedy's assassination was announced over the intercom at school. I was teaching a class of three-year-olds at a preschool when I heard the news of the Challenger. And of course I explained above about 9/11. Thinking back over the past also reminder of when I was in elementary school and we had drills against the event there was a bomb attack. We would all get down on the floor under our desks. I can remeber when my own daughters were growing up and the schools had bomb shelters in the event of a nuclear attack. But how do we prepare our children to protect themselves against the attack of terrorism. When the enemy may be a neighbor, friend, or someone who works with Mom and Dad. Many times the United States has been critized when they have become involved in the politics of other countries but at least when we there fighting for what we thought was right everyone knew we were there and not like the acts of terrorists. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had dropped my son off at Solomon Schechter Day School which was then located in the old Malvern Elementary School. He was in 3rd grade, and that past June we had spent our summer vacation in NYC, doing all the tourist and historical stuff that our family loves. On the way to my office, I stopped at Panera Cafe at Van Aken Shopping Plaza for coffee to go. I was listening to a sports talk station--WKNR in Cleveland just before entering Panera--as I came out a few moments later, the tone of the show changed--anchor Bruce Drennen was no longer his jovial self, as he talked about "a plane that crashed into the World Trade Center in NYC." I began switching stations and there was nothing on AM or FM including NPR. Setting my car radio on "scan" I found that Howard Stern was getting first hand reports from the streets of NYC on what had happened. Members of his staff had gone out with cell phones to find out what had happened--someone reported in that a second plane had crashed. There is a veteran media person in Cleveland by the name of Norman Wain. Among other things, Norm established the Cleveland station that put Howard Stern on the air here--I knew Norm well and called him to tell him that Stern was being a jounalist and to find out if Norm had heard from his son, movie producer David Wain (Red Hot American Summer) who lives in NYC. Norm appreciated the call and he had just heard from his son. By then I arrived in my Beachwood, Ohio office. Being an employee of an Israeli university, raising funds for it here in the US, made me keenly aware of what "probably" had happened. I was joined in my office by several others who had business offices, etc in the same location and we gathered around my television. None of the news was good, and truth be told, it got worse as planes crashed into the Pentagon and later in a Pennsylvia field. I got on the phone and called my son's school. They had a plan to not let the younger kids outside for the rest of the day, to tell them that the area was sprayed for bees. The younger kids were kept away from the older kids all day to make sure that they were not told--it was best for the parents to tell them. Very concerned about the safety of the kids at the school, I called the mayor of Shaker Hts., and actually got to talk with her. My point was that a school full of Jewish kids could be a target--she imediately had the building protected by a series of patrol cars for the rest of the day. Having a great many friends and colleagues in NYC, I called and got through to many via cell phone. Thank G-d that they were all safe and were trying to make there way back home--my friend Paul Jeser may have been the last car through the Lincoln Tunnel as he rushed back home from Manhattan to New Jersey, while my friend Richard Goldstein and his wife Ellen met up somewhere in NYC and took a ferry across from Manhattan and somehow got home from the docks in New Jersey. Dr. Howard Schwartz, a noted Cleveland allergist, was concerned about his son, Michael, a student at NYU, and his other son, Adam's family living in Maplewood, NJ. Adam was on business in Israel, presumed safe. No one knew the where abouts of the others. Paul Jeser went to work, calling the Schwartz household in Maplewood and reporting back to me via AOL Instant Message that the Adam Schwartz family was fine. I reported that back to Dr. Schwartz. My wife, Linda and I spoke by phone several times, and she decided that she would pick our son up after school that day. Once safely in the car, she told him what had happened. At home, I was transfixed by the television, but Jake chose to go play alone in his room, obviously in denial. Two hours later, he came out, curled up next to me and watched the events on television for hours. Other things--I stopped at a couple of grocery stores on my way home and bought several flats of bottled water, canned foods, candles, batteries, etc. I also filled my car with gasoline and got several hundered dollars of cash from an ATM.
