I never realized I could feel that way . I love different cultures and the differences in people. I believe it's what makes the world turn. keep things on an even keel so to speak. my next statement is something I thought about and ridiculed myself for having these thoughts. If we were all created the same then maybe war would not happen ................... I'm very wrong . and I know this because of my own boy's . one night the older boy was teasing the little one and it turned into a full fledged fight over a pair of dirty socks.... who could ever think that 2 human beings would fight over something so petty . h'mmm did I say petty oh!!! well this is my breaking point !!!!!!!! enough I yelled and took the socks away , now both boys are being lousy beasts and I'm cursing at them . as I'm sitting here typing I ask myself who am i. where do I come off saying that the dirty socks are petty . as stories break in the media I think how stupid is this..... well again I'm wrong....this is not stupidity . I don't know what it is but as things go stupid is not standing up and taking a bow for this . this looks like a picture from another country and another era . not 2001 in the united states .my grandmother always told me to look for the good in everything O.K. I'll give it a shot....... there's a human giving yes giving a helping hand..or maybe some reassuring words .what ever is going on it seems that there is one person there for another so with that in mind I would like to say thank you for being with each other. I don't know who this man is the only thing I do know about him is he is a fire man , he was at the world trade center that day along with all the other firemen , police , and every other person who suffers this on a hands on basis . I really can't even think of a way to put it into words . bless him .AND I thank him and all of the others from the very pit of my soul . I received this in an email. a beautiful perfect baby right ? well this baby is sick. and she needs help. and god willing she will get what she needs and will live a happy healthy normal life. but what will be "normal" when she grows up ??? what are we leaving her and all the other children ? all I know is when I say my little silent prayer for her it is for more than one reason and I ask her forgiveness now...... these are my guys the 4 of us are learning to live together. its been pretty tough . my little ones are "picked babies ". it doesn't mean we don't love each other it just means these 2 charming children live like they are an "only" child in a house of 2 children . and my husband this man has made me the luckiest woman in the world .in fact alive . he is everything to me ."life" "touch" "reason" "sanity" even a little insanity. Everything I exist for is because of him .or at least because he loves me . just writing this bring a smile to my lips . oh these 2 the bigger one is my natural son . I gave him life but then he gave me life . We've shared an awful lot of things. I cannot even think of life with out him . from day one he has been a pleasure . warm , loving , a thrill to go through the years with . I can honestly say that he got the hang of growing up right the 1st time . I had worked the night before so I had slept in a little. When she called she asked me if I could believe what happened. I had not turned the television on so I didn't know what had happened. She told me that a plane at crashed into the Twin Towers. I turned on the television and saw the footage of the second plane hitting the Twin Towers. Not long after I heard about the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. My husband worked on a construction sight about a mile or two from the Pentagon. I was so shocked at what was happening. I was unable to reach my husband because the cell phones were not working and I was frantic. I didn't know what was going to happen next. I wasn't sure whether or not I should rush to the school and get my kids or if I should wait to try to reach my husband. I was finally able to get through to my husbands cell phone and after discussing it decided to let the kids stay in school. I still remember feeling shocked, sad, and mad all at the same time. I remember praying for all of the people in New York, Washington, and the living relatives of the passengers in all of the planes. I remember thinking about all the other terrorists acts that you see on the news in other countries, and being relieved we live in America where things like that don't happen. America's sense of security was stripped on that awful day but our sense of Pride, Freedom, and Patriotism was lit and has burned bright ever since. We have proved to the world that we will Perservere and that we are beyond all doubt the Strongest and most United country in the world. For all of the relatives of the Americans lost on that awful day, I would like to say that we will always pray for you and we will always see every one of our lost Americans as HEROS. I have had loss in my family, but I don't think it can compare to the sorrow of this awful tragedy. He tells me how wonderful she was and what an ambition she had for life. I was at work at the bank when it happened. I was just silent watching and wondering why this would happen. The gentleman I work with is a wonderful person and when he talks of her he still gets upset and it makes me cry. I had left my husband at home sick and had just dropped my 2 children at their schools. In the car alone I put the radio on and Decided to listen to Howard Stern. On my way to get coffee Howard said he had a report that a plane crashed into the trade center. I thought it was bull so I changed to the local news station. They didn't say anything so I changed back and went to get my coffee. When I got back in the car Howard said it again. This time when I changed back to the local news they were now covering it. No one was sure exactly what had happened yet. I remember thinking "How could a plane be so off course". I went home and ran upstairs to my apartment. I screamed "Allen!" as I ran to turn the T.V. on. "Allen" as I saw snow on every channel except channel 2.(Yes, I am like the only person in New York who doesn't have cable.) I don't remeber if I saw the second plane hit or the note from my husband first. After running room to room looking for him I saw the words "had to go to work for a little while, seeyou later". My heart sank in my stomach because he was on the Q train going into Manhattan. I ran to the phone and called his cell. Voice mail. "Allen call me back." I knew he would call ASAP because I was due in a few weeks. I sat in front of the T.V. stunned frightened. I knew I needed to stay calm because this wasn't the day to go into labor. I tried calling again. Oh my G-d my mom works in the Empire State Building. I call her office, and get the voice mail. Call me if you get this. Now the Pentagon is hit. "My G-d we're under attack and my husband is on his way over the Manhattan bridge on a train in the subway. I call again. I want to burst into tears but I must stay calm. Today is not the day I want to go into labor. Breathe. I sat stunned in front of the T.V. I called my cousin. "Please, stay with me on the phone. I am trying so hard to stay calm." Then there was a sound as I watched the first tower go down."Dear G-d this can't be happening. All those people. Where is Allen." Please call. About 10:15 he called. Thank G-d. "I love you . I tried calling you. Why did you go? Why did you go?" We were on the phone when the second tower went down. I watched it on T.V. He saw it out his office window. "This is terrible. I love you." By now there was no way in or out of Manhattan and my Husband and mother were both trapped. I kept him on the phone line for quite some time. I was afraid to let him go. "I hope I seeyou again."My mother called at some point she had been evacuated from her building. She was with people from work heading uptown. "Please hook up with Allen. You need to be together." Family members started calling . Who's home? Who's in the city? Did you hear anything? My Aunt who was at Windows of the World during the first attack called to say she"d be over.With my Aunt I gathered my kids from school and waited at home. I watched in horror with the rest of the world and waited. I tried so hard to stay calm that day. I really thought it might have been the end. I remember when my husband and mom walked through the door.The embrace of having my family home safe gave me great comfort. My husband children and I slept together in the same room that night. Two weeks later I gave birth to a healthy bay boy. My heart goes out to everyone who suffered that day especially the pregnant women who were not as lucky as I was. At first when I heard it from our local radio station I thought it was a dumb joke, then thought well maybe it was a small private plane with engine trouble to take it that close to the towers. Soon I knew it was real so went home to watch the world coverage of it. It was so horriable it took me a time to realize the mass loss of lives that were happening in front of my eyes. The employees that were trapped inside there and the rescue people going in to help that lost their lifes. Our schools 8th graders were on their way to a Ecological trip to Cape Cod and the bus was notified to turn around and come home, we wanted our children where we could see them and hold them close. I have to admit I stayed glued to the TV for days for word of any survivors. My children watched when they could and I think gained a greater respect for the way our country and our people came together to help each other. I volunteer for the Red Cross blood drives and the next day we did our regular scheduled drive, we had to keep the building open until past midnight that day. We do sandwiches and refreshments for the donors but this time we had food coming in from local stores and our Middlebury College people. The outpooring was fantastic. My nephew works at the Pentagon and we did not know that he was not at work that day as he was leaving in the late afternoon on a business trip. It was a time for all of us to gather and pray for the ones we lost and the ones left behind that will never forgt that day. This particular day we had a workshop and people were there registering in my office. We did our usual morning chats and I sat down at my computer to work and all of a sudden I heard on WPTF radio station that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and I said to my co-worker, Kristy Osterhout that I had just heard that particular news, she said, "Oh my God and we were debating about it being an accident and my feelings were that no plane flies that low. Then another coworker Susan Kilpatrick came running out with her small tv. We all stood around the tv to see what was happening. Some of the workshop people came and mingled with us. Then we all watched in horror as the second plane crashed into the World Trade Center, we were crying and so many people were asking so many questions. Then of course, we saw the news about the Pentagon and then the United Flight in Pennsylvania. It was a very scarey day for all of us and we did not get much work done, we just could not concentrate. We all felt so bad for all of those innocent people. I retired in July this year and returned to my former place of employment to be with those on that day of one year ago. We had a nice memorial service outside of the building that day. Terrorists attacked our country and killed innocent lives. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers and after that, sparked a war between the United States and Osama bin Laden, the main suspect for this horrendous act. No matter what, people want him to be captured whether he is dead or alive. I remember seeing the dust and the destruction on the television. Every class that I went into, the television was on and everyone's eyes were glued to it, watching in complete silence. We were all listening to find out and discover new information about what was going on. When I was in Global Studies, second period, we were watching for about ten minutes when all of a sudden we witnessed the second plane crash into the side of the second building. At first we were like why are they showing us a replay of what is going on, but then we realized that it wasn't the first plane, it was the second one. I could not believe that us, of all people, experienced that second plane crash into the building. I was so traumatized just thinking about all of the innocent lives that were just ended that day. People going to work not realizing that they would never see their families again. In my mind that would be so hard to just lose someone because of the hatred that man has for our country, just because we are different and he doesn't agree with how we are and how our country is run. After that day a lot of people changed. I remember the next day I was driving around and I saw people putting up flags in their windows on, on their cars, hanging on posts. Their were also people holding candles, mourning the loss of all the people that had their lives ended so suddenly inside of the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon. A sign of patriotism just shot through our country that we haven't seen in awhile. Even though this was a devastating event, it brought our nation together and made us that much stronger in many different ways. Our school raised money so that we could put up flags in almost every single one of our windows, which I thought was very generous. Also when we had our moment of silence for what had happened, everyone was silent and I could see in his or her faces that they truly cared about what was going on around them. This day will be remembered for the rest of our lives, and is now a part of the history that will be taught hundreds of years from now. The lives that were affected by this catastrophe will also be remembered, and the ones that ended will be deeply missed. I just can't believe that someone would be so merciless to kill yourself as well as innocent lives just because you were told to and because you dislike our western civilization. That truly makes me sick that someone could just go out their, steal our planes, and kill our American people. Me and the rest of the class were listening to the teacher talk about the earth and everything else that had to do with Science. All of a sudden the principal walked in and whispered something to the teacher. After that we had found out that two planes had crashed into The Twin Towers. At first I didn't know how to react. But when my teacher had turned on the television in the classroom and I had seen the whole thing, I got into tears because there were people in the buildings, planes and especially people outside. And half the people that lived in New York had lost at least one family member that day. Ever since that day , to me America has changed. Everyone takes care of eacother even more, we have more respect, we have more security check, and ever since that day there hasn't been anything like that. When I turned on the T.V. and I heard the news anchors saying we were being attacked, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I kept thinking how could anyone get into our airspace without the military knowing it and then they started to report that planes had been hijacked and terrorist were on board using the planes like missles. I never thought that I would live to see the day that America would be under attack. I contacted family members to make sure that everyone was safe, and thank God that they were. I went outside and started to put out more flags then I already had up. I remember thinking how quiet it was outside, there were no cars or children playing. A strange feeling came over me that I never felt before. I went back inside and kept praying to God to help us and protect all of us. I started to cry thinking about all of the innocent people who lost their lives;because some terrorist can't stand the way that we live free in America.I pray to God that I never see another day like Sept.11th. The emotional side is a different story. Each of us experienced this horror in different ways: I was under 1 WTC 20 minutes before the first attack enroute (via the PATH) to Jersey City for a class that was originally to have taken place in that complex (but was moved at last minute for space reasons) Most of my seminar attendees had their offices over at 1 WTC; so -- at 8:50 am -- one of them received a cell phone call from his wife asking if he was OK, as there was a reported fire in his building. We were in a windowless room...so, as a group, we left the classroom and walked to the (33rd story) windows of our riverside building , which afforded a panoramic view -- 1000 unobstructed yards away -- of the WTC complex. It was a gruesome sight. Someone who occupied one of the nearby desks handed me his binoculars (he uses them to watch ships in the harbor) and I watched the flames shooting from the upper tiers and then began to see people jumping from the windows. That was particularly difficult. Since that building housed some of my students' offices, they were in a panic. We immediately called a halt to our activities and started to pack up. Just then, I SAW the second airplane (huge) ram into Tower Two and explode into flames. At this point someone said..."Holy Christ...this is no accident. They?re terrorists!" The building we were in is the tallest on the Jersey side of the river...and someone said "Let's get the hell out of here before they take this one!" I had all my baggage for London with me..(I was to have had a limo pick me up at 6 PM to take me to the airport)...so I schlepped all my teaching materials, (baggage, wrapped gifts, handouts -- four bags worth) downstairs to Exchange Place -- which looks right out over the water across New York Harbor to the World Trade Center. There we are...thousands of us in the street...with this unbelievable view of the carnage...completely and totally helpless to do anything but stare in utter horror. Police were pushing us back, for fear that there may be nearby terrorist activity. No one knew anything! At that point? about 20 minutes later...the second tower imploded...sending debris flying into the River and all over the surrounding areas. A work associate of mine had been on the ferry to New York from the Jersey side when she saw the second plane blast. The ferry turned around and I ran into her; and both us -- dazed and panic stricken -- grabbed each other, did a bit of crying and held on to the air. It was like watching a war movie or an 007 drama unfold before you and you are an ?extra? player. It was surreal. People just stood there...unable to utter real words, much less sounds. My friend, Angela, told me that she lived about 8 blocks back in Jersey City and would I like to go there? So...with the tonnage of my stuff, off we took by foot...arriving in time to turn on the TV and see the second building implode. I couldn't reach Sandy. No oper-ational phones. Angela's husband called her on his car phone and I asked him to leave a message for Sandy on either our home phone or her office phone that I was all right. A co-instructor whom I was to meet in England for tomorrow's (now cancelled) seminar reached Sandy who asked if she would call me at the number that Angela?s husband had left on the machine. So, by third party coincidences, we found out about one another's safety by around noon. This was a huge relief! Sandy had had her own experiences. Having voted in the primary, she was headed up out of the subway on Canal Street to her college -- which is four blocks from the WTC. She heard (first),then saw, an extremely low-flying jet -- obviously in trouble-- crash into the first tower...leaving a gaping hole in the shape of a plane....followed by smoke, then flames.and, as she describes it, paper fluttering down from the sky like snow ...the remnants of the work space on the upper floors. Equally surreal! The college closed (now being used as a receiving morgue and staging area) and she walked the over 100 blocks back home...as the destruction continued behind her. It was a two-hour trek back to West 8lst Street. She then spent the next several hours fretting about me, since she knows my work is often in the World Trade Center. We've lost friends (the flight attendant on the AA crash into the Pentagon...my sister's closest friend and next door neighbor.) I've probably lost a few associates from Morgan Stanley (it housed 2500 workers on the upper stories of Tower Two). I'm not sure about my Lehman clients, but I am an executive coach to three vice presidents who work(ed) on the 38th floor of One WTC. In these past 15 years, my primary business has been in the financial services industry, teaching interviewing techniques to thousands of executives in the Wall Street community. As the days unfold, there will be more stories and more grief. We wait. Our hearts break a little. We pray. As I write these thoughts, 5 WTC has just collapsed and One Liberty Plaza ? where I designed a training and development center for Merrill Lynch 25 years ago is about to implode. Sic transit gloria mundi! I'm grateful to be here. I haven't felt this stunned since the JFK assassination...and they're not that many folks around who remember that, as do we. It was an equally hopeless moment in which we all felt to powerless, hurt and angry. I was unable to get back to the city. so my friend's husband drove me to Hoboken last night where I slept at my niece and nephew's apartment. The ferries started letting people cross this afternoon...and, as I chugged across the Hudson toward the Chelsea Piers, there was the massive gap in the skyline...something was no longer there..a familiar landmark, part of my heart and a lot of my identity. We will never be quite the same again, will we? So there is the longer version of how we are....but we ARE here. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Scheduled to have surgery on Sept. 12, I was on the phone with my insurance company around 9:00 A.M. They were based out of Texas and were attempting to contact the surgeons office that I would be going to. We spent fifteen minutes on hold until the insurance representative came back saying that she could spend no more time on hold and noted that there was some sort of emergency up by where I lived, but did not know what. The rest of the morning went by, and me, without having any television, was not aware of any of the events. I began driving to meet a friend for lunch in Point Pleasant around 12:oo P.M. On the way I did notice that the streets were very desolate for that time of day and that the presence of state police was significant. When I got to my friends job, everyone was standing there with sullen looks on their faces. I casually greeted my friend and asked what was wrong with everyone. He replied "You don't know?" and I just stared back. He told me that I should ready myself for what he was about to say, knowing that I had for the past year had vivid nightmares of witnessing or being in plane crashes, one of which occured in Manhattan. "The World Trade Center is gone," he said "two planes hit the towers and they collapsed. One more hit the Pentagon and another crashed in Pennsylvania." I was in obvious disbelief and shock having it all hit me at once. We still proceeded to eat at the deli across the street but when we went in and saw employees and customers engaging in nothing but silence around an old radio broadcasting the details and the chaos in New York, the whole moment overwhelmed me and I abruptly left knowing that the way of life of the world had been changed forever. I spent the rest of the day watching the horrific event over and over on the news in my sister's living room. I later convened with my friends at a Dunkin' Donuts parking lot. We watched the sun illuminate the dust that once was The World Trade Center as it made its way down along the shoreline. The pain is still and always will be there when I see the horror of that day or when I pass New York City and know that we can never change what happened, we can never go back. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was early morning, around 7:30 a.m., when I arrived at the high school. I am the study hall supervisor there. It was my first year as a full-time faculty member there. It was a special day as half of the student body were taking ISTEP (state standardized tests) while the other half were participating in SLAM (September Learning Module). SLAM enabled the students to travel outside the school to do fun things like bowl, fish, tour our town, etc. I was to tour a group of new and exchange students through historically significant buildings in our small town. When I had left my house that morning everything seemed fine. Good Morning America had come on like usual. Their top story wasn't a particularly strong one. Before we were to leave the building, a student came up to me and said, "Did you hear a plane ran into the World Trade Center?" I said "No. What type of plane was it?" "I don't know," the student replied. I remember thinking that it must have been a twin-engine cessna or something that wasn't really serious. We had access to televisions but none of them were on. We took our walking tour and everything appeared to be normal until we went into our school corporation's offices to have a look around. The receptionist was on the verge of tears. She told us something horrible had happened and there was a big screen television in the board room if we wanted to watch the unfolding event. I couldn't believe what I saw. Smoke rising from one of the world's tallest buildings. Word had also gotten to the news anchor that the Pentagon had been hit as well. My mind was swimming. The information almost to thick for me to comprehend. The students and I assembled in seats around the school board table to watch the news coverage. I remember telling the students "You'll always remember this day. Just like some do when President Kennedy was assassinated." Then, all of a sudden, it happened.... the first one of the twin towers collapsed. I kept saying out-loud but to myself "I can't believe it." I said this over and over. I was trying to give the kids comfort but at the same time trying to help them comprehend this tragic event in American History. Upon seeing this, I felt the need for us to return to the school building. No one knew what was going to happen next. Some of those we saw or talked to that day were wondering aloud "Is anything else going to happen? Is the world just falling appart before our very eyes?" After we returned to the building shaken, both television sets in my room were turned to CNN. We learned in my room that all flights to the U.S. from foreign countries had been ordered to turn back. That Canada would now be responsible for taking all aircraft bound for the U.S. We also learned that schools in our capital city of Indianapolis were shutting down because they either were scared or parents came to pick their children up because of the uncertainty. About this time, the school's vice principal came in to inform me that we were going on "lock-down" status for an undetermined period of time. This means that we have to turn the televisions, lights off, close and lock the doors and windows and hide far away from potential flying glass and debris. That afternoon, parents galore came to the building or called our principal to make sure everything was alright. Fortunately, nothing our of the ordinary happened in our small corner of the Hoosier State. But we all as students and faculty felt very sad for those who lost their lives on that tragic day none of us will ever forget. Tell us your story: I had just started working overnights at the newly built Super Target in Minnetonka, Minnesota on Monday September 10th at 10:00 P.M. Our first truck consisted mostly of toys. Getting off work at 6:30 in the morning, my only objective was to get some sleep before my next shift that night. The first report of the first plane brought me out of my attempt to drift off and then the second plane was seen live. Surreal was the only way to describe the day. Tell us your story: On 9-11-01 I was at work doing my usual morning work when the news spread through the office of the plane that crashed into the first tower. We were all shocked. We had not yet known that it was a terrorist attack. We thought it was an accident. Personally, I felt a deep sadness for the passengers and the people in the tower. I was praying that they would live but I could not imagine how with such an impact. Then we got news of the second plane going into the towers. I then knew truly America was being attacked. Not sure why but a deep fear arose in me, not knowing what to expect next. Then we heard of the third and fourth flights going down. I can tell you that I have never experienced the feelings I felt on 9-11. All of us at work were calling our families just to make sure they were okay. Knowing full well, that they were but just wanting to make that contact. We take family for granted so much, that when something like this happens, you just want to feel close to them. I can not imagine the loss and the pain the families are experiencing, the firefighters, the police, all of those involved, it was unimaginable...When I finally got home from work and actually saw the footage on the news, I hardly believed my eyes at such terror. I felt as if I was watching a television movie. There is so much out there that is fiction that seeing it for real is almost unbearable. I watched as much coverage the first couple of weeks, and still do watch a lot of the coverage. It is something that you do not want to forget about ever. I am a God fearing person and I believe that this terror has called this GREAT NATION back to GOD and PRAYER and patriotism to OUR COUNTRY AND FLAG. Where we need to be. For God has truly BLESSED THE USA. Through the next couple of days after 9-11, I cried, seeing the coverage, people looking for their family in such desolation. It made me think of what it is going to be like when JESUS comes to carry us home. If we think this was CHAOS, just wait until the rapture takes place. It will not just in New York City, but worldwide. This terrorist attack was a horrible thing to happen and I am glad that some good has come out of it. But I do with all my heart pray for peace and strength for everyone involved from the families to all the workers. God can give peace that no one can understand... I am also so Thankful for a PRESIDENT that gives so much and yields to God and his word for direction. My hat is off to President Bush and my prayers are with him and his family and administration. Tell us your story: On September 11th I was at home caring for my goddaughter's nine month old baby girl,little did I know that this wonderful most loved baby would help me to deal with such a horrible and tragic day......we started the day as always watching the disney channel, then for no reason I switched channels and was watching the today show,then what seemed to be an instant all hell broke loose... I was sitting in my living room feeling like I was the only one in new york, I felt so alone my daughter was in school and my son was sleeping but I felt so alone never had I ever felt that way before....then as if this little angel baby named Brianna knew my sorrow she wiped the tears from my eyes as if to say nana everything is going to be alright..and I felt this inner peace overwhelm me and I knew that although we suffered this great massacre to our city we would survive and with time and the faith that our father in heaven has given us we will be fine..we will never forget but we will be ok ,so thank you my beautiful angel baby for your love....I love you always nana....... Tell us your story: I had just left a meeting and I was driving across the bridge from Manayunk to Bala Cynwood when I heard a local radio DJ said, "A plane has just crashed into the World Trade Center, where going to go to commerical and be right back." That is when I changed the radio back to The Howard Stern Show to get a better understanding of what was going on. I called my office and told them to turn the TV on. "What channel?" "It doesn't matter." On 9-11-02 The Howard Stern Show ran a reply of the horrific events and I can still remember where I was the day I heard the replay. I had talked to my Girlfriend later on in the day only to hear that a fellow employee's sister had worked there. My sister had called me at my office crying like I had never heard he before. As it turned out she knew one of the pilots. A couple employees at a manufacturer I work with were outside in Western, PA when they saw the plane go down. That night I sat on a couch with my Girlfriend and her roomate just watching the news thinking what is next, and as many people thought when does the official annoucement of Bin Laden being the attacker come? It is very eery to think growing up we hear our parents tell us that they remember where they were when events such as JFK, etc. happened. Never did I think this would happen, at this magnatude, that I will be telling my son about what happened on 9-11 and even though I didn't directly know a victim it is still heart wrenching and tear jerking to remember. Berkes Phoenix, AZ I was visiting my son, Chris who lives on Long Island, for my first trip to NY and having a great vacation. I had been to the WTC almost daily during my 10 days in NY. On 9-11, Chris left his place shortly before I did. I was on the subway on my way to finish my visit at the Holocaust Museum when it stopped one stop before the WTC. No one can understand anything being said over the speakers in the subway. Finally, everyone started getting off. Walking out onto the street, I heard that a plane had flown into the WTC. I thought ?what a horrific accident, a pilot flying a small plane has made a terrible mistake?. So, I kept walking south toward Battery Park and the museum. Somewhere along the way, I learned that another plane had flown into the other tower. Obviously, this was not an accident! I continued walking south trying to get to Chris? building (1 Financial Center?across the street from the north tower) to make sure he was safe. I didn?t know if he was in the subway stop at the WTC, in the mall getting a bagel, walking across the bridge between the WTC and the Financial Center (where they later found bodies) or already at his desk. People had their car radios on and I learned that two more planes were missing. Sometime after this, I heard a plane overhead. I ducked trying to see which way to run. By the time I heard the next plane, I looked up and saw that it was one of our fighter planes, patrolling the NY skies. Then I heard screaming and someone saying one of the towers was falling down. Was it falling down on Chris? building? Had he gotten out of his building and was he helping hurt people at the WTC site? I decided to walk west to see if I could see the street where his building was located. Maybe he would be running up that street. There was so much smoke, ash and pulverized concrete blowing. Although I was not in the hurricane wind, it was still blowing. The particles were beating into my legs. Why did I choose this day to wear a dress? I couldn?t breath. It must be chemical warfare because I had never smelled this before. I put a tissue over my mouth and nose. People were running by covered in ash/concrete particles, bleeding and screaming. What should I do? The other building fell. Emergency vehicles were everywhere. They were evacuating people out of their homes. Some had their pets with them. Where was Chris? meeting? Had he told me? Needless to say, my cell phone was not working so I could not call him. Finally, I found a working pay phone and got a call out to my Mother in Texas to let them know I was okay. Was I okay? I wasn?t bleeding, so I must be okay. At some point I learned what happened to the other planes. The buses were being used for rescue workers. The cabs were all gone. Where do NY cabs go, there are millions of them? The subway was closed. The train stations were closed. How will I get back to Long Island? What to do? So, I sat down on the sidewalk. I decided I should go back to Penn Station. Surely there would be a police officer who could tell me where the YMCA was or a church where I could stay the night. How will Chris know I?m okay? Is he okay? I couldn?t breathe. After hours of walking, a bar where I could get a coke and a bottle of water. So good. Keep walking. Finally, the station. They had just reopened the Long Island Rail Road. No schedule. I got on one, not going to New Hyde Park, but at least going to LI. It was packed with people, smelled terrible, no air. How did any people survive the train rides during WWII? It was about an hour before the train started moving. Oh, I recognize the name of this station. I?ll get off here. Maybe I can get a cab to NHP. Wait, there?s no station, just rows of tracks and platforms. Where?s the street, so I can get a cab? Thankfully, they?re announcing a train to NHP and I jump on it. Get to Chris? apartment. Thank God, his car is gone. He would not have driven to work in downtown Manhattan, so his meeting must have been out of the office. Called Mother and learned that Chris had called them shortly after I did. He was in a meeting in Brooklyn. Everyone knew we were safe, except me. The horrible sights, the horrible smell, the horrible fear of losing Chris, my best friend. I will never be the same again. My ticket to the WTC observation deck will not be used.
