Dear Mark Phillips, I find it unfortunate people have suggested you doctored the photo with the alleged "face of Satan" in the smoke following the World Trade Center attack. I am sure you are aware of the CNN photo (or was it a still from the video?), in which the face appeared more clearly. Hey, once in a while clouds look like tigers, birds, or whatevers. Why is it so strange for the smoke from some explosion to look like a face? As humans, we are designed to see faces because of the survival value inherent in such an ability. What amazes me is that people have a hard time accepting that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. It may interest you to know that I have now found five (5) faces in your photo posted on <http://9news.com/newsroom/13294.html>http://9news.com/newsroom/13294.html Perhaps I'm spending too much time with this and I know all the arguments about seeing faces in clouds, attaching religious meaning, etc. I do not know if there is any meaning to these faces. There are many strange phenomenon that we will never understand. I do have one question: How many terrorist were on this particular plane? I can't attach any meaning too it but I see faces here. I have attached a bmp copy of your photo and highlighte the areas where I see the additional faces. And actually my wife found two and I found another while I was showing here the second face I found beside the obvious one. FYI, I am not distributing your photo or using it on a web site. This bmp is simply to point out the 5 faces because I don't have any good editing tools for graphics. Compare what I send to your original and look over these outlined areas carefully and you will see the faces. Below is a brief description to assist your finding the 5 faces. 1. The obvious one in the center. 2. Just to the left of the center face, with 1 eye and a beenie cap, elongated chin, maybe a beard (this is the one I pointed out to you yesterday) 3. In the beard of the obvious face, a profile face (circled on attachment) 4. Shares the eye of the #2 face, resembles a skeleton in a helmet, frontal face view, difficult to see at first (circled) 5. Top right of photo, chin / mouth almost lined up with the bangs of the obvious face, possibly wearing a turbin or pilot cap, may be easier to spot viewing at an angle looking left to right (circled). I apologise for taking up your time with this but I though you may want to know. It may be worth something if you enhance these faces making them more obvious (especially if it turns out that there are only 5 faces and that there were only 5 terrorist on board, you could call it the Face of Terror). It kind of freaked me out, but I also saw an angel image next to it. I told my co-workers about it and they just laughed like I was crazy, but when my friend sent me this e-mail, I got goosebumps. Just a regular person w/a 35 mm taking a picture of my parents farm after my 56 year old Dad died. Walmart which developed my picture alerted me to the little boys face in the clouds. Of course it is not possible for me to say if the image is authentic or not, but I hope that you could see where I and all the others come from. Intentionally or unintentionally, your photo represents something that is very frightening and that can lead to simplyfying everything in black-and-white only. "This was a monstrous act of evil" is obviously tended to lead to an association stating that "there is a Satan and he is behind of this all.." But as I said, I can't really make any judgements on if the photo is real or not, but I just wanted to express my scepticism and by doing so to remind you of your responsibility as a ptotographer to also think what consequences the publication of your photo might have.
