Description
An account of the resource
The Madison Area Peace Coalition (MAPC) formed fourteen days after the September 11 attacks to oppose (among other goals) the use of U.S. military, economic, or political force – whether direct or proxy, overt or covert -- "that violates the sovereignty or human rights of any nation or people." The Archive has assembled here e-mails exchanges from MAPC dating from the group's founding until late November 2001.

The media is saying that the US has sent ground troops into Afghanistan. We
had planned on a 5pm action on the capitol in response to this. I think we
should go ahead, but given all the other things we are doing, we should keep
it simple.
I propose we just have a picket line. The following things need to be done:
Get an announcement out to WORT to build the action.
Get a bullhorn.
Put together a sheet of chants.
What do you think?
Unfortunately, I am walking out the door to go to work, so I can't help on
this. Given the fact its a work day, I suspect alot of other people are in
the same boat. Can someone step up and run with this?
Thanks.

all (this is really a response to x's friday morning
call to potential action/questions and x's friday
night hey it looks like we should at least do a picket
line sat afternoon emails):
if we are going to do this tomorrow, as x is
suggesting, i am out, as i have to work, but pls keep
me posted, as i will then start the arts chain going.
do we want same signs or more? x has sticks and i
have cardboard, etc.
i wonder if, and this is just a wonder, having even a
picket when the action is not being well-publicized is
a good idea. i know that there is much going on in
this war, like all other us "actions" which is
underwritten dramatically, and we need to call
attention to it, however, folks are more likely to
understand what we are calling for and call with us if
it is of a dramatic nature. subjective nature, i
suppose. as we all agreed at the last meeting, from
here on out it is much more subjective than just the
bombing beginning.
regardless, i will pass the word if i hear back from
more folks.
thanks,
x

The following are left over from last meeting:
(1) Changing the CC Meeting Schedule. (It was requested that this item be
placed early on the agenda, before the WG/C Reports.)
(2) Donation to Wil-Mar for Last GM
Unless we've already decided, we should add:
(3) Location of Next GM
And:
(4) Planning Next CC Meeting (Facilitator, Agenda, Etc.)
Finally, since our godlike powers have been expended to include facilitation
of strategy development, we should probably figure out how we've going to do
that, thus:
(5) Developing a Strategy for Developing Our Strategy

My recommendation is that we proceed through the agenda in the order listed (subject of course to change by the body) until 5:50 p.m., at which time we should jump to Item 13 and table any remaining items until next week.

Hello, all in coordination. Great stuff you've all been sending regarding what's going on for this week, and in general. Exciting.
We are going forth with the November 30th event, and I'm going to bring each committee a "to-do" item, or a few, at the meeting on Sunday. For now, I wanted to get you a quick outline of our plan so that you have something to print or distribute on the event, so your people know what they're doing these tasks for. Attached is the "rough" flyer we're distributing. We will be developing a nicer one when more of the acts, etc, are firmed up.
Here is the basic plan for the event:
--set up from 5-6 at Lapham Elementary School, East Dayton Street. (1045, I believe.)
--Event from 6-9. We are targeting families and "mainstream." the name of the event is "People for People, People for Peace."
--Main focus on the event is the gathering of items and assembly of kits for refugees fleeing Afghanistan. We are encouraging the donation of blankets, cash, and of school supplies for the "school kit" that the MCC distributes to refugee camps.
--We will have live acoustic musical entertainment, and some kids acts --TBA.
--We will have free refreshments, donated.
--We will have booths with information and petitions, buttons for sale, canvasing materials, visuals on the refugees who we're helping. (This is where most of your committees come in -- more info at the meeting)
--We will have mural painting, on canvas. Any ideas for where we could display the mural after it's done?
--We will have the assembly and decoration of kit bags going on for kids to pitch in on, to engage them in helping the refugees. We will put the school kit donated items inside...
--From 9-10:30 or so, we will have break-down and delivery of goods to a local group who will be sending items to MCC in Indiana later that week.
That's the overview. Look forward to seeing you Sunday.

You Can Help Stop Terrorism Before It Starts!
Terrorism is a tactic of desperate people. The Taliban was born and bred in the miserable refugee camps of Pakistan. Today 2 million more Afghanis are expected to join these camps and others like them in Iran. Will they too live for years in poverty, lacking food, shelter, medical care, schooling and hope? Will they become recruits for terrorism?
Please join the Madison Area Peace Coalition for their holiday season

Hello, Coordination Folks.
Wanted to update you on current discussion within Arts and Culture. WE are thinking the best plan may be to do some simplification of the Nov 30 event, and to solicit any and all help we can get from the greater coalition. I will call some volunteers tonight from the list I got last week and get a better idea of what we're dealing with. We're thinking we can pull it off if committees are willing to put an item or two on their agenda to help with the preps.
Thanks,

The press conference this morning was generally successful.
Wisconsin State Journal, WIBA, Wisconsin Public Radio, WYOU,
and Badger Herald attended. So six of the 12 chairs set up for
press were filled by the press, and two more were filled by some
peace movement people who showed up in solidarity. X and
I were there to set up and coordinate. X, X, X,
X, and X spoke and answered questions.
X and X represented MAPC very well.
We are planning a press release for next week Wednesday or Thursday
to prepare for the 17th.
We have sent Fast information to around 100 church bulletins
through Madison Urban Ministry.
X (who pronounces her last name with a French
accent) will represent Media this week at the coordcom meeting.
I overspent on the Isthmus ad in order to guarantee placement
on page five. Ad cost $435. You can tell me to eat the overage
if you must, but it seemed like the right thing to do. Ad will
appear in the 11/15 Isthmus.
In addition to writing a lot of releases and rewriting some others,
X has produced a lot of photocopied material on Afghanistan.
Some of it is in the press kits we prepared for today's news
conference. I think it would be nice if X or X had a copy
of the press kit along to pass around and share what we gave
the media today (X did a lot of the copy work and all the
folder preparation on these).
X is following up on X instructions that we
get stuff on the Insurgent Radio Kiosk and a couple other bulletin
boards.
We've been really busy the last few weeks and I think it's starting
to show in the media.

Here is the CC mission, combining X's original plus what we added/changed:
- The main decision-making body of MAPC is the General Meeting. The General
Meeting sets the politics and the general direction of MAPC. The
Coordinating Committee takes its direction from the General Meeting, and is
accountable to the general membership. All decisions made by the
Coordinating Committee are subject to discussion and review by the General
Meeting. The Coordinating Commitee ensures that the decisions of the
General Meetings are implemented.
- The Coordinating Committee is the central orgainizing body of MAPC. It
ensures that the work of the committees is coordinated. It evaluates
ongoing work to make sure that MAPC is not missing opportunities for
outreach, growth, and political impact.
- The Coordinating Committee is responsible for facilitating development of
overall strategy for the coalition, subject to General Meeting approval, and
for providing recommendations to ensure that the work of the committees is
coordinated in a matter consistent with that strategy.
- The Coordinating Committee is empowered to make emergency decisions for
MAPC. An emergency decision consists of responding appropriately to rapidly
changing current events, or of initiating the coordination of plans that are
under time constraint. The Coordinating Committee has the right to make
emergency decisions when necessary. Emergency decisions will be reported
back to the General Meeting.
- The Coordinating Committee is responsible for establishing policy on and
making decisions regarding disbursement of funds by the coaltion.
- The Coordinating Committee is responsible for orgainizing the General
Meetings. It will develop agendas for General Meetings. It assures that
General Meetings are organized so that critical discussions are held and
important decisions are made in a timely fashion.
=========================================
THis was a little more difficult than it seemed, since not all sentences
flowed well with what was sandwiched in. The first paragraph is funky with
using "general meeting" and "general membership" but I think it's probably
ok. I did some minor editing to make everything fit together. We agreed to
give 24 hours for corrections and feedback. X and X will present.
X, will you be printing for distribution at the meeting?
Here is the agenda:
GM meeting agenda
1) Welcome
2) committee reports
- action
- outreach
- Student Youth
- Arts
- media
- policy
- fundraising
- labor movement report
3) Proposals (new business)
- CC mission proposal
- Action committee vigil proposal
- SYC logo proposal
4) Announcements
5) Optional - Video
I'll get the meeting notes out as soon as I can clean them up, probably
tomorrow evening.
X

Madison Area Peace Coalition E-mails

Communication Committee Report
1) The database itself is constructed. Work on the Join form is continuing.
The free form fields of "other" for volunteer activities and "I belong to
the following groups" will not lend themselves to being queried against.
This means that anyone looking for specific information will have to read
through all the records in the db to obtain it. The db can be initiated as
is, and we can look for a better solution later, when we are more able to
assess what query and information needs there will be. Maintenance and
query tools also need to be created. These tools will need password
protection. Completing the db is the top priority for the Communications
Committee.
2) The committee mail list moderation is becoming cumbersome. Emails
require moderation for 4 reasons. A) Porn (not a lot) b) from someone not
on the mailing list c) too many addressees or d) trying to send too big a
file. We had discussion on perhaps having each committee assign someone to
do their own moderation, or, turning moderation off altogether. We decided
to leave it as is for now, and are looking into some other options that may
solve some of these problems. New mail lists still need to be created for
the students and the yet unnamed world committee. This should be done
shortly.
3) Website issues: We discussed some improvements needed. A) We will add a
page for Printable Materials, so the posters for events can be posted there
so members can get them and print them themselves. The problem today is
everything is dropped off downtown or campus for pickup, and we are missing
opportunities for people to poster the outskirts on their own because they
don't want to go downtown to pick them up. B) We will create a link on the
navigation bar for In the Press, and look to having articles about MAPC etc
scanned in and posted there. C) We will look into password protecting some
of the Wiki pages, so they can't be changed once they're posted (such as
fundraising, meeting minutes, press releases). D) We will work on FAQ
pages, both external (people wanting to learn about MAPC) and internal
(people in MAPC wanting to know how to do things - could be web related or
not - example, how to reserve a room in TITU).
4) We have a proposal: There is no contact info on the web site on how to
contact MAPC in general. We are proposing to create an email link to
contact MAPC, and have this email go to the Coordinating Committee. The CC
members could pick up and answer these emails as appropriate. For example,
someone might ask about an upcoming event, and the outie of the committee
sponsoring the event could respond.
Peace,
X

Communications Comm Status report 11/09/01
1) The database is in progress. I have a printed copy of the draft join
form that I can bring to the meeting to show. New groups are not yet
included.
2) I have added and removed the changing outies from the cc mail lists.
3) Several web pages plus other printed materials need to be updated with
the new outies. I will work on completing this over the weekend and should
have what I know done by our meeting. One dilema - since the Int'l cmte has
yet to have an official name, I've been holding on updating this info on the
Web. This includes creating a mail list for this group.

Hi all!
If this email looks familiar it is because I am trying to help put together
a coord comm meeting as well organized as the one Gillam facilitated last
week.
The next Coordinating Committee meeting will be Sunday, November 18, at 4:00
p.m., at Memorial Union (Check TITU for room location). I have NOT
submitted the room reservation request. I understand from the minutes that
Derek has this covered.
IMPORTANT: If you're an Outie, and you cannot attend, please ensure that
someone else from your Working Group/Caucus is at this meeting.
As you know, we continually postpone agenda items at our meetings. As
facilitator for the upcoming meeting, I would like to help us move through
the agenda more quickly.
FIRST: I am asking each Outie to post his/her Working Group's or Caucus's
report to the CC mailing list BY FRIDAY NIGHT. Your report should be
divided into three parts: (1) update on the WG/C's activities; (2) requests
for assistance from other WG/Cs, and (3) proposals to be acted on by the CC
or general membership. This will enable us to read the updates ahead of
time, and focus our meeting time on the requests for assistance and
proposals.
SECOND: Anyone with a proposal to present should write it up and send it
out to the CC list, again BY FRIDAY NIGHT. This way, the proponent won't
have to spend meeting time explaining the proposal, and we can jump right
into questions and discussion.
Please note that the success of these measures is dependent both on everyone
sending out the advance e-mail reports & proposals AND on everyone reading
their e-mail prior to the meeting.
I would also like to follow the suggestion that we defer action on all
proposals from WGs & Caucus until after all WG/Cs have reported.
The proposed agenda for the meeting is as follows:
1. Introductions & Check-in
2. Additions/amendments to agenda
3. Approval of minutes
4. Working Group & Caucus Reports
5. Action on Working Group/Caucus Proposals
Old Business:
6. Proposal: MAPC/SWAIG Newsletter
7. Proposal: Peace Draft
8. Adding at-large CC members
New Business:
Please let me know if you have any additional items to add; I will print up
an updated agenda for distribution at the meeting.
Thanks,
X
P.S. If you are no longer the Outie for your WG/C, please forward this
e-mail to the new Outie. Thanks.
