TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story 9/11-THE AGENDA INTERRUPTED AND THE LESSONS LEARNED The seemingly gratuitous events of 9/11 that led to the violent deaths of so many and the destruction of the towers that had come to symbolize the wealth and power of New York, compelled me to realize that the agenda interrupted was civilization itself, which I realized was only a thin veneer covering a murderous instinct that still resided deep in the human soul. Within each of the world's great religions, I thought, there were kernels which, if isolated, advocate non-violence. The commandment ""The Shall Not Kill"" is reinforced by the prophet Isiah, ""The lion shall lie down with the lamb."" The Lord's Prayer is an instruction in forgiveness, the Hindu Upanishads, a mandate for human compassion. The holy texts of Buddhism are prescriptions for an end to the cycle of violent retribution, while the ultimate goal of Islam, itself, is peace. Certainly, it was this agenda that was not only interrupted, but perhaps canceled. But can we afford to allow this agenda to be suspended? And have we learned the most serious lesson of 9/11 of the necessity of creating a more perfect union, not just in America, but in the world? St. Paul has taught us that there can be no peace without justice. The justice he spoke of was really Aristotelian, in which there is a more equitable distribution of the benefits and burdens of society. As Aristotle understood, unless the well-off create a more just world, they will live in constant danger of violent revolution, risking the loss of everything they have. Consequently it is imperative that we seek to create this more just world as a matter of enlightened self-interest. In the end, without a component of compassion, we will find it ever more difficult to win the war on terrorism. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story On 9/11 when the smoke cleared our eyes were opened to the frightening truth. We are vulnerable as a country as any. This nation is no where near invincible, and now we live in fear of a future attack. The people responsible for these actions not only killed thousands of Americans and caused billion of dollars in damage, they instilled fearing every American heart. When these events come to mind Americans ask themselves what were the motives of the villains? Why did they do what they did? Did they do this for revolutionary purposes? Was this some sort of crusade? I personally feel that this attack was for religious purposes. I feel these said individuals committed these crimes to prove that there religion or faith is above every other. I as an American believe that they are entitled to practice their religion or faith freely, but I ask myself what kind of a religion would promote murder? What kind of a religion would allow people to kill innocent people? What caused these events is not as important as what will be done to compensate for them. When will justice be served and who will it be served to. The response, of the U.S., for these crimes was timely and just. I realize that more people have to die but it is necessary for the sake of keeping our country safe. As our eyes opened on 9/11 after the attack we realized a number of things. Our pryers still go out to those affected by the tragedy. Now we as a nation can only learn and grow. We have to remind ourselves that when all is said and done, we are still one nation under God. Were they ever important enough to want to come back and mend them? The problem about social security to me is an important issue for the fact that I work now. I m paying taxes so my check is being deducted. I want to know that I am going to be able to retire with money that I worked for throughout the years. Moving on, the Tax Bill with the tax cuts has being discussed and passed on. However the people are now having second thoughts of their own decision for the fact that at that time it was brought up the economy was fine . Thus, now they are doubting because since Sept. 11 our economy has gone down. Airlines have declared bankruptcy many americans have being laid off. The decision is how will this tax bill help us? The government has being putting off the major issues. They want us to believe that our problem with Osama Bin laden and Afghanistan is the #1 priority that we need to take care of. The government wants us to believe that we re in war against Afghanistan although the US never did declare war. They say it s a war against terrorists but how do you declare war on terrorism? Even though our government has failed us in that point it is doing everything possible to keep up with their duties, The Preamble. Action has being taken towards Sept. 11 troops havebeing sent. There is no argument towards that but the issue is that they also have to keep up with the other important issues not forget them. If they are dealt with now the rest of time could be concentrated on the terrorists. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story If 9/11 was a wake-up call, why are we as a nation still asleep and dreaming that the fear industry (Homeland Security, Airport Security, Militarized Security, invading poor countries in the name of our Security) will protect us? Why does much of the world fear and hate and threaten us? Why is the administration and media so focused on resisting terrorism without asking what terrorism really means? We citizens, awake or not, are politically and financially supporting military aggression upon the already occupied people of Palestine. We invaded Afghanistan and threaten to invade other sovereign states because they may harbor terrorists. This arrogant aggression, to many in the rest of the world, is the epitome of terrorism! It is MILITARIZED TERRORISM: terrorizing the world with vague and specific threats and acts of using U.S. military might against relatively defenseless peoples. Where is the logic in thinking it is OK for tanks and helicopters to kill civilians but not for suicide bombers? Suicide bombs are a tactic of war, of an oppressed people making a statement about their desperation. The Golden Rule works this way: Do unto others (terrorize), as you would have them do unto you (terrorize). So, after a wedding party was slaughtered, as collateral damage, our troops were attacked. To build a more perfect union, we must wake up from this illusion (that we are not terrorists) before we escalate as an aggressor state, endangering our own real safety and that of everyone else in the world. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Toward a More Perfect Union: Failure to Ask the Right Question and to Answer It The well coordinated terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 occurred because a group of men hated the United States enough to give their lives to hurt us. Following the attacks, the U.S. Government rightly asked the question, ""How was this allowed to happen?"", and began planning to more effectively combat terrorism. Another question ought also to have been asked, and addressed, namely, ""Was the hatred of the United States to any extent justified, and, if so, how can we proceed to moderate or even eliminate hatred of our country?"". Osama bin Laden, credited with masterminding the terrorist attacks, has been quoted as saying, ""I swear to God that America will not live in peace before peace reigns in Palestine, and before all the army of the infidels depart the land of Muhammad"" (i.e., Saudi Arabia). If we had troubled ourselves to be introspective, rather than simply outraged and vengeful, we might have realized that the goals of these terrorists are not substantially different from our own goals. We (the American people and the U.S. Government) want peace in the Middle East, and more than that we want a just peace. We (the American people) want out of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Government is autocratic, and supports an international islamic organization that is working to foment revolution around the world, including inside the United States. It's not too late to be introspective, to become concerned with how to reduce hatred, rather than only with how to combat it. The Bush administration, however, appears to disregard the importance of hatred entirely, for example, the hatred growth effect of making a pre-emptive strike into an Arab country seems not to be a factor in the administration's invasion cost:benefit equation. Hatred cannot always be avoided, and we should not compromise our principles in order to avoid it. In this case, however, we are hated because we are already compromising our principles. Impacted first was President Bush and the insular mainstream media - cloyingly U.S-centric and farcically unsophisticated on world affairs. George W, who only a few months before drew a blank when asked to name Pakistan's President, overnight - along with fellow ignoramus - got a crash course on the geography, history and politics of a region swarming with Al- Qaeda terrorists. Unpronounceable names like ""Tora Bora"", ""Quetta"", ""Jalalabad"" and ""Peshawar"" exuded a new gravitas. Not to mention Pakistan's General Musharraf, who suddenly became Bush's new best friend and bagged a promised $1 billion in aid as a quid pro quo for providing intelligence and air bases to dethrone the Taliban and get Osama. Today, armed Americans, thousands from the army, CIA and the FBI stalk Pakistani landscape against the wishes of its people who consider America the scofflaw. When the U.S fought a proxy war with former Soviet Union in Afghanistan, Pakistan became its front-line state, promptly to be dropped once Communism collapsed. Many fear a repeat. More ominous is a nuclear strike as India and Pakistan squabble over Kashmir. Both are nuclear capable. America can play the honest broker but says it won't unless invited by India. Scariest still is Pakistan suffering yet another attack on 9/11 by Islamic militants threatening to strike. Instead of finger-wagging and preachy homilies for Musharraf to ""behave"" with India, ""contain terrorism"" and allow democracy to flower by holding elections next month, a schizoid Bush and his oxymoron aides should allow Pakistan a breather to deal with militant Islam its way. I say nothing is different, especially our inability to acknowledge or learn from our mistakes. We proclaim our support for Ariel Sharon as a ""man of peace."" We have a record a mile long of backing armed intervention in the self-government of countries from Viet Nam to Guatemala. In 2001 we began quite unjustifiably bombing and paying mercenaries to fight in Afghanistan to take ""an eye for an eye"" for the WTC terrorist attack. Economically, we're fully as bossy, selfish, and hypocritical on a global scale. And we wonder: ""Why do they hate us so much?"" We leap to the comforting conclusion: They hate us because we're free. In fact, our sense of freedom is illusory, based on the fallacy that we have no past. That was the advantage of coming to a New World from the old. They really hate us because we THINK we're free of the laws of karma that bind everyone else to suffer the consequences of their acts. As one more day that woke us up for a while until we drifted back to sleep? Or could it go down in history as a terrible wound inflicted that awakened us to the need for healing? Maybe we could be like the man who has a heart attack (bad news, right?), but his trip to the emergency room results in the discovery of a cancer that is then successfully treated. Albert Einstein referred to nationalism as a disease. I believe that, as is so often the case, the challenge is to put things into a reasonable and realistic perspective. Anyone who genuinely wants to contribute to healing must resist the temptation to approach global politics like it's a team sport or an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. We must not let our identity as Americans keep us from seeing our place in the bigger picture as members of the human race and guardians of planet earth. September 11 has helped me to realize that our hearts and our minds are intended to work together, in partnership, neither one imposing itself on the other. The emotions that have been stirred in us during this past year are important; they are vital. The analysis that has been generated is just as important. Our challenge, as Americans and as citizens of the world, is to put the two together, to allow our hearts to fuel us and our minds to direct us--- and specifically direct us to break free of old familiar, circular patterns of behavior that ultimately solve nothing. If you are only of one mind, one unanimous opinion about all that is going on in our world, I will be so bold as to suggest that you are hiding behind simplicity and all-or-none thinking. We must not run and hide behind over- simplifications and scenarios full of good guys and bad guys. I hope we can listen better to our hearts and minds; they are hard at work. I hope we can remind ourselves --- and each other --- that the community in most danger here is not America, but humanity. The solutions we so desperately need will not be found in a contest to see who the toughest guy on the block is, but in a partnership that begins within each of us and expands to become a global sense of community. September 11 should inspire all of us to get involved with trying to make a difference in this world, to become pro-active. Don't just think about volunteering; volunteer. Don't just complain about government; participate, change it. Don't just disagree with this article; write a letter to the editor. Einstein once said, ""We cannot simultaneously prepare for war and for peace."" September 11 has taught me that violence is never an answer, in self-defense is it only acceptable. I hope September 11 will remind us all how fragile life is and that we are all connected as humans. So as we reach this very important anniversary in our country's history, let us make the solid decision to open our hearts and minds to dealing with the problems we now face in new and creative ways. Yes, we were indeed assaulted by heinous terrorists. Yet our government has since finished where Bin Laden left off. The Department of Homeland Security vows to match the terrorists' dynamism; flexibility is key when fighting terrorism. The President -- a fitness enthusiast who occasionally chops down trees for exercise -- avers that to touch our toes we must first shoehorn bric-a-brac agencies into a single monolith. His case for war against Hussein has been built on speculation and fear. They were caused by imperfect people whose goal is to destroy our confidence in who we are, and what we do. The terrible events made us think, not about our faults, but about our weaknesses. Unless we go on the offensive to fight geology with democracy, petroleum deposits indicate that we will live in fear of Saudi-funded Islamic terror for the century to come. The Saudi princes use their oil bounty not to enrich their society, but to build intricate networks of walled harems that keep the lesser-borns on the outside looking in. The Saudi royals pay fundamentalist nuts, under the guise of funding mosques and Islam-centred schools, to use Islam as a false front of national unity and to direct their society's fermenting revolutionary tendencies toward us rather than toward them. The 15 Saudi Arabian hijackers took the bait on 9/11. The Saudi royals and their Middle Eastern neighbors don't need to create a productive multi-class economy, because the money just keeps coming from abroad. 65.3% of the world's one trillion billion barrels of proven crude reserves remain locked beneath Mideast territory. Saudi Arabia alone owns 25% of the world's crude. Mideast states produced 30% of last year's crude output. Those in favor of American inaction in the Middle East might point to the 30% figure as proof that we can diversify our oil supply. But a glance at reserves-to-production ratios (which give an idea of how many years of oil production a nation has left in the ground) shows that the opposite is the true. Saudi Arabia can produce at last year's rate for another 85 years. Iran can produce for another 67.4 years. The Middle East region can produce at the 2001 rate for 86.8 years. If we think we can solve our problems in the Middle East by developing reserves in Russia, Alaska, South America and West Africa, we should think again. The Mideast will wait us out. Saudi Arabia has proven its versatility as, in the words of one petroleum analyst, ""the world's central banker of oil."" Last year, new production from the west was almost exactly offset by a 2.7% decrease in OPEC production. The US has only 10.7 years left on its proven reserves (including those in Alaska), while Mexico has 21.7 years left. The Russian federation, even with recent discoveries, has just 19.1 years left. The whole of Africa, plagued with above-ground risks that scare off even the most well-traveled executives, has 27.4 years left on its reserves, while the Asia-Pacific region (including Australia) has 15.6 years left. The more we depend on non-Mideast sources of oil, the faster they will be depleted. So we have a clear choice. We can resign ourselves to our current geopolitical neverland, which means another 86.8 years of calling our enemy our friend. Or we can go to war to destabilize despotism with what should be our chief export: democracy. We can start with Iraq. A war with Iraq, no matter what the nominal justification, will prove one thing to our allies: that we Americans will not forsake our own long-term interests for a short-term political gratification: low oil prices. If we go to war with Iraq, oil prices will go up--so let's quit worrying about it. But even if oil prices hit $70/barrel, we must work to set up a real postwar democratic oasis in Iraq. Democracy in Iraq will infect her neighbor to the east (Iran) and to the south (Saudi Arabia). Iran's mullahs can barely keep that country's 66 million subjects from breaking out into western-style democracy now. Once the Saudi royals see American troops conquer Iraq, they will trade in one form of self-preservation for another and will implement democratic reforms for their own 23 million people. And while we do all of this? We can buy less oil, and we can develop alternative sources of power. If the French government were using money from cheese exports to fund radical anti American groups, you can bet there'd be a full-scale boycott against French cheese. But oil is considered different, as if its status as a commodity erases its source. It doesn't. American consumers who must participate in today's dysfunctional US-Saudi relationship are only two degrees of separation away from Osama bin Laden. Money from us goes directly to the Saudi royals, who, evidence shows, pay Bin Laden to attack us instead of them. Until we can get the Saudis to stop funding anti-American terror (one way or another), we should tighten our own cash spigot or suffer more near-term consequences. The great divide between rich and poor has little to do with superior skills of the ruling class. It's the result of a persistent and systematic fiscal rape of the working classes. The indefinite war against terrorism is simply a charade to divert resources from the building of the Global Village to the maintenance of the inhuman World War Industry. Peace won't be achieved through strength (war) but through universal health. Violence is unhealthy for individuals and governments alike. These troubled times need 21st century, futuristic leadership, not 12th century, feudalistic dictatorship. When we give peace though health a chance, we'll all succeed. U.S. submarines and warships ply every ocean, and communications and spy satellites circle the globe. In a subtle twist of language, we have expanded our defensible national interest to include the entire world. This ""home"" versus ""away"" scheme also fits neatly into Bush's foreign policy- Us vs. Them. After 9/11, we asked, ""Why do they hate us?"" We should listen to ourselves for the answer: In most dictionaries, ""homeland"" is a close synonym of ""fatherland,"" a word often found in the company of ""ethnic cleansing"" and ""goose-step."" This showed us how lucky we are to live in a country that gives us the freedom to have the the Bill of Rights and a Constitution. We have greatly learned to appreciate our government even thought we may not always agree with what they do, but in the long run it is for our best interest. We have realized that maybe our differences about how we are allowed to run our lives was a reason for the destruction the terrorists did. They may have seen it as they were saving many people from our corrupted country by their actions. By comparing our country to many others we have realized how privileged. We are fortunate to know that we cannot be discriminated for our race of by the way we dress and to have the opportunity to be the person we want to be. With the terrorists attack on America it has given us, the people of the world, a reason to put aside our pity differences and unite to fight against a common enemy. Fear and doubt were raging and everyone who looked Muslim (whatever that means) were proudly trouncing my Liberties. Pure human waste was flying grey ash in New York and you are telling me that I still can't use your stinking bathroom unless I buy something. Americans, regardless of intent were being scared into submission, angry at their uselessness, sullen, and searching for the illusion of a distinctly American peace. Airplanes were making nice hotels for weary travelers and happy incompetents went skipping off to their jobs as airport screeners hoping that they would get to strip search grandmothers in wheelchairs today. Everything was aligned, perfectly. Every true American was standing 'under God,' being promised resolve from our gOVERNMENT who promptly hedged their bets after a retrospective, a carpet bombing of Afghanistan, and silences a week and now quite a few months later have refused to net us one apparently Waldoian Bin Laden. I applauded heroes and I cried for the dead, and even today candles are burning in my house. They are not burning for the families, not for the fallen, and not for the imprisoned. Those candles are burning as a reminder to the American citizens who still do not understand that Liberty and Security are Vinegar and Oil and that our greatest threats to democracy were our January 1995 "Bojinka" negligence; our September 10th, 2001 ignorance; and our August 6th and August 9th ambivalence. The tax cuts, the education bill, social security, the rising costs of prescription drugs, whatever happened to all these issues that had us on the edge of our seats? The media had us consumed with both important and irrelavent issues, but yet, people watched. All these issues were americas agenda. Then, on 9-11, americas agenda was abruptly interrupted indeed. The evil acts that took place on that day hit us all like a ton of bricks! We all just watched on television as our nations twin towers as well as our pride was struck by filthy reprobates! New Yorks skyline has, irreparably, been damaged. Thousands of our innocent neighbors were killed and our spirits bruised. Then after all the smoke clears and the dust settles, America now has a new agenda. Now, all the while, those issues that were so important before 9-11 have become obsolete. So what ever did happen with the disappearance of Ms. Levy? She was found dead and that was the end of that. I wonder if all other issues not pertaining to the 9-11 attacks will ever be as important as they used to be? One thing I do know is that, yes our agenda was interrupted and it probably will be again, but understandably so. I do think that it is sad that it took something of this magnitude to get our mind off of money issues and what not and on to things a lot more important such as our nations well being. But at least now we have an understanding for what it means to be an American. Agenda interrupted (9-11) has made a huge impact in our lives in more ways than one. TomPaine Story TomPaine Story: Story Toward a More Perfect Union The profile image of a neatly dressed young New York businessman giving his reaction to the first 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center is permanently trapped in the world mind. Hunching forward, he frames the lower left edge of the astounding video of the second attack. For a few seconds he is everyone on the planet as he stops talking, sits up, and turns to look in perfect astonishment. The world paused on 9/11, like a pendulum poised at the top of its swing. The towers went down, a crumbling hole appeared in the Pentagon, and the irrefutable pictures shot around the globe again and again and again. People said, Everythings changed?. But the change was hard to define, inward and eerie, like a crisis of faith. Everything had changed for everyone. The world had suddenly and collectively lost its faith in an earthly superpower. Just as the explosion of the first atomic bomb showed that a barely imaginable technology was real, the destruction of 9/11 showed that the United States itself was not inviolable. What the United States does next makes a great deal of practical difference to the planet, but the central myth is dead. And not a moment too soon. The world has real problems, starting with racism and climate change, Durban and Kyoto. The world can solve its problems by working together, without superpowers. Let us not grope around for the next one. We all entered the world naked, unable even to speak our own languages. We will all leave it dead. Meanwhile, we have unprecedented access to thousands of years of collected thought and instant communications. We can make peace. We can end hunger. We can learn if we will. Lets do it.
