Our school did not tell us about the attack because they thought that everyone in the school would get scared. When I got home that day from school I quickly ran and turned on the TV. My sister and mom had been home from school that day, because she was sick, and they both told me that they were both sitting on the couch watching the news. They said that it was very scary and that they had never seen anything like that before. The next couple days everyone at school and at my house was really scared and I know that I was wondering how something like this could happen to the US without being able to stop it. The news papers the rest of that week had the picture of the World Trade Center with the plane inside the building on fire on the front page. Whenever I see a bird in the sky and it looks like an airplane it scares me to think that the terrorists can be on a plane and could just decide to do another suicide bombing with the plane right into my subdivision. Now I try to make sure that I mean everything I say and don't say things that I know that I'm going to regret. Whenever I say the Pledge of Allegiance I mean it. Whenever I hear the Star Spangled Banner being sung or played I listen to it and remember September 11th. This is a great country and I feel like this terrorist attack has just brought the US together more. We are more like a family than we were before September 11th. I think that everyone who died in World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania crash that might have been headed for the White House should be remembered. The people in the plane that acted and caused the plane to crash early before going any farther should be remembered for their act of bravery. I had to drop off a pair of slacks I had altered for my eldest son,while visiting with Him and his wife, a bulleton came over our news channel, about the first plane, somehow,I knew this was an act of war, I refuse to see it as mere terrorism,for the fact a foriegn faction chose to violate our Countries safety and to kill innocent life and to put so many others at risk, to me this is an act of war, that is my opinion,I'm sure not shared by all. At first I watched in horror, as the second plane hit, I told my son not to leave for Chicago that he may not return or leave by flight to give a few days. After the fourth plane, I called my childrens school to see if picking them up was advised, to my surprise they said only if I wanted to, well my innerself was screaming "I'm on my way Guys." but I resisted, my Father is a retired navy demolition career man,He also did some other Govt. work and He taught me to not show fear in the face of addversity to face it head on to defuse if possable but to strike back all the same. I personaly see the History of Sept.11 2001 equal to, The bombing of Pearl Harbor,The Terror of HITLER AND ALL WHO FOLLOWED AND SUPPROTED HIM, BinLaden and his supporters are no less guilty than was any tyrant in Americas History or future. That day woke many Americans up to the real and present threats that are waiting and watching to come on our shores. I am the Single Mother of 7 Children and I am aware of what I stand to loose, of that 7-5 are of legal drafting/enlistment age,but if they fight and die,it will be with honor as with the many who died on that day. We lost lives before they ever struck there targets. Those lost can not be helped now,their famalies can be. I was in my 1st pd class we had finished the lesson for the day when my teacher was told to turn on the tv that an airplane had crashed into the first tower. For me it was the most shocking of all things seeing the U.S under attack and thousands of inocent people having to try to escape the tower and the thousand more who were trapped in the tower when it collapsed. My friend's mom called about 6:45 or something like that and said to turn on the news. I thought to myself,"What could possible be so important that she called so early in the morning." When i turned on the TV I was stunned as i stood there in my room with my backpack on. the news was saying that there has been a tarrorist attack in New York. At the time only one plane had hit the towers. I could hear the panic in the news-casters voice. Just before I left for school there was another plane that had hit the second tower. I was sick to my stomach at that point and i didn't think that this could even be happening. When I got to school, all of my classes had the news on. I got to watch the horrible images over and over again. I didn't want to see them any more. And it got worse over the day. There was soon a third plane crash by second period. I made my way to Middle School, without a care in the world. I was the type of person who didn't watch the news, so there was no way for me to know until I got to school. Most of the students at school acted normal, but my first period teacher announced what happened that morning. On that day, September 11, 2001, I was on my way from the U.S. Tennis Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing, NY to the Wall St. Stock Exchange with other drivers, to pick up Lincoln vehicles which were on display the previous day as a promotion for the Lincoln-Murcury Division of Ford Motor Company. We had just gotten on the Grand Central Parkway and headed toward the Triborough Bridge when ,Tony , my companies V.P. informed us via Nextel, that a plane had flew into the World Trade Center. We assumed it was a small plane. As a retired FDNY Captain with 36 years of service, I was eager to get to the site ,which is a few short blocks from the WTC site, to see if we could help out. We had the car radio on but not the news. As we proceded toward the bridge I could see from my window what appeared to be smoke rising from the southwest. I thought to myself that's a lot of smoke from a small plane. Minutes later Tony came on again and told us a second plane hit the building, not knowing at the time that it was the other WTC tower. I knew then that this was no accident. However we continued our approach to the Triborough Bridge unaware of the magnitude of the damage to the building. About five minutes later Tony called again and said, "Dino where are you?". Dino answered," were about five minutes from the bridge". I could see unmarked emergency vehicles passing us by and drivers stopping their vehicles, getting out and looking at the column of smoke rising in Lower Manhattan. Still not knowing what all the details of the incident and the progress of the attack we proceded. Then Tony called a third time and said, "Come on back (New Rochelle, NY) they're going to lock down the City". With that we got off the Grand Central Parkway and headed back in the opposite direction to our shop via the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. Upon arrival at the shop I was told that the building fell down and two attacks was made with jet passenger planes on the two towers. Ironically the shop TV was inoperable so the visual of the falling tower was not seen. To me "fell down" means toppled in an upright position(it actually "pancaked" collapsed) and I said that the toppling of the tower in that way would kill a lot of people in its fell zone. I cried at the thought of the resultimg dead and injured. I knew many of those who were killed would be firefighters and their supervisors that I had known. I see life as precious because it is so fragile and must be constantly looked after. I see people as people nothing more and nothing less who have the same desires as everyone else. I pay more attention to my family now than I did before, I am more understanding. I am more politically alert than before. I pay attention to what the politicians say and do and judge them by their character. I pray for the survival of this nation and the destruction of its enemies. I encourage my children and my grandchildren to be patriotic and love their God and their country. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The heroics of all those people who did their best to rescue their fellow men and women but lost their own lives. The innoncent victims who never had a chance. The love, compassion,unity, and civility that the people of this nation ,especially the NYC Metropolitan Area of NY, NJ and Ct., exhibited toward each other. The tremendous outpouring of material charity by the American people. Those rescue and recovery workers who worked around the clock for eight months. The support from all the volunteers that fed ,clothed and comforted those workers. We were truly "one nation indivisible" at that time. But most of all I remember all the firefighters funerals and memorials,the sadness of the survivors and their families, that I attended in my old uniform. When my daughter and I woke up and went into the living room The Today Show was on. I think it was some interesting topic that day so I left it on while we ate our breakfast and played puzzles on the floor. I remember Katie and Matt were talking and all of a sudden everything was sort of confusing and they switched to a view of the WTC and it was smoking. I turned up the volume and heard them saying that they had no idea what had just happened for sure but that a plane had crashed into the WTC. The look on Katie Couric's face was one I will never forget . It was a look I had never before seen and have seen so many times since that day. I continued to watch as the second plane crashed into the second tower right before my eyes and as reports came from the Pentagon and Pennsylvania of the other crashes. I don't think I have ever watched so much news in my life. My eyes were glued to the screen. I called all of my closest friends and family to be sure that everyone was alright and to tell them that I loved them. For me it was a day filled with many new thoughts, worries, emotions, and fears. I have experienced for the first time in my adult life true pride in my country. For that I am ashamed as well as proud and I think I'm not alone in that. Don't get me wrong- I have always been grateful for my freedom and for the people who work every day to make our country a safe place for us to live, but the severity of that respect and gratitude has grown tremendously and with that I have learned to love America. I witnessed history on September 11th, by watching it on television, reading about it in the paper, and hearing about it from people at school and from my parents. I was very sad for all the people who died, and all the people who lost family members, and for the firemen and policemen who were doing their job and lost their lives. The September 11th attacks did change my life because it made me glad that we weren't in the World Trade Center. But it still made me very sad that a lot of people died, and that the firemen, and policemen died. People have been losing jobs and the economy isn't as good as it was. Also the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic songs were sung more at school and played more on the radio. It brought me closer to my family and relatives. We see each other more and talk on the phone more. We should remember all of the people who died and all of the policemen and firemen who lost their lives doing their job. The worst thing for me was seeing the Afghani children celebrating this awful event. How sad for them too, to think this could ever be a good thing. Those who should be remembered are all the people who died, and all the people who lost family members, and for the firemen and policemen who were doing their job and lost their lives. Also, all of those people in New York who lost jobs should be remembered. Most especially all of the destruction created by hatred. These words booming from my husband with urgency and disbelief. I was certain I was having a bad dream. I had just relaxed and closed my eyes after working a 12-hour night shift at the emergency room. I laid there as the television volume went steadily up in the living room. Confirmation. And to my horror, another plane was heading into the other tower. I was shaking and my heart was racing as I stumbled out of bed. I was scared. Of what would be revealed to me as the days went on. What did my husband mean "war"? This didn't make sense to me. Terrorism? Sure I've heard of it maybe a couple times. Osama Bin Laden? Never. My heart was broken into a million pieces. I cried a million plus tears. I watched the horror unfold on my television (from Texas) wishing I could do something to make it all better. I found myself afraid....not just for the victims, their families, and the rest of the world, but also for my baby. She would be one year old in just 15 days. I wondered what kind of world I was bringing this beautiful, innocent child into. I couldn't move from my spot in front of the television for the longest time. I truly can grasp the true feeling of sadness and helplessness. I have never known it like I do now. In that respect, I also have a stronger appreciation of life and the moments of happiness in my life. I initially had nightmares of being the target of Osama and couldn't sleep for weeks. I cried a lot. I hugged my loved ones a lot....I wrote letters to relatives more. I started having a deeper respect for human life, human dignity, and the idea of treating your neighbor like you would want to be treated. I started loving others more and I became more patient and tolerable of things I normally would not be. Of course this all didn't come about the day of the tragic events, but September 11, 2001 marked the first day of the journey to a more spiritual me and a more loving me. Like new York - I´m living at Dortmund/Germany - it was a very beautiful day. Bautyful until I saw a very small article at my news ticker. i thought an accident has happend. But than..., the second plane hit the WTC. I stopped working. Until 20 h (cet) I tried to watch all news I could receive with a girlfriend and her husband at their house. I think that this being the most documented event in the history of the world that it needs to be preserved and taught to classrooms around the world... This in a sense is history whether we like it or not... We were all a part of this 'historic' event... and in as many people who have witnessed it or have seen pictures and heard stories of it... we are all a part of the story... unwilling participants in an event never seen before... I remember that day as do we all... I made the mistake or perhaps exposed myself to some twenty one or so hours of non stop footage of the events as they unfolded on the television... I probably changed channels a thousand times or more that day... Never has anything so public and so great in size ever touched the depths of my soul like that day... I have never shed so many tears and felt the pain that so many others were sharing with me from that day forward... I think that watching the events of that day on September 11th of this year would be just a bit too much for me to handle... I'm not trying to forget or to even avoid what happened that day because by all means... my heart, my thoughts, my prayers and my tears will be shared with everyone who passed away and with everyone who survived on that day... This evening I happened to watch a program on our local public broadcasting system called 'Stranded Yanks' which told the story about how thousands of airline passengers headed to the United States were stranded in Canada when the airspace in the United States was shut down for five days and how the people of Canada reached out to make a good experience of the tragic events of that day... After seeing that program, it helped to know that although we lost so much on that day that we also gained much more than I have yet to comprehend ... a new definition of humanity, random acts of kindness, strangers becoming friends and friends becoming family... That was the day that the world stood still... but it was also the day that countless people took action... We saw the worst of the worst on that day and because of that we saw the evolution of the best of the best... Random acts of kindness... people helping people... nations helping nations... giving... sharing and caring... And it all happened from that day...
