I got to watch cnn a little bit in 3rd, 4th and 7th periods but the school said we couldn't watch it so we had to sneek it in when ever we could. At school you would here that the pentigon was hit or that there were still planes up there and you just didn't know what was real and what was just rumor. When i got home i turned on the news and watched a little until i was just filled with anger and couldn't watch anymore. During the night I would tune in a little to see what was going on in the world and i would just see the tape loops of people jumping, the 2nd plane smashing into the building and the towers collapsing. Before 9/11 i never knew what i wanted to be. It was a cop one week and then a teacher the next. That day i knew i wanted to be a marine in the worst way. I know we still wont be fighting Osama Bin Laden after i get out of college but i still want to go fight someone, mabey stop another country from doing somthing like this again. I think we should remember the firefighters who wrote there serial #'s on there arms before rushing so there bodys could be identified. I think we should remember the cops who ran up flights of stairs to save the people up above. We should remember the people on the airplane that forced the terrorists down over Pennsylvania. We should remember the soilders that died in the pentagon who were making plans or just patroling the hallways. We should remember the civilians on the ground who were crushed or were in the building when it went down. Remember every and all the true Americans that died. I came in with the rest of the class and I thought that it was terrible to make a movie like that. Then I found out I was watching real people die and the shock settled in. We watched the replay of the first plane then later at nine another image came on the tv in Soc Studies, a second plane had hit the WTC tower. They had both been hit, I wonder if it would be different if only one had been hit. Everyone naturally thought the next target was the Statue of Liberty. Then we found out it was the pentagon. Who were these terrorist who were trying to demolish our nation? Somebody was talking about Muslim terrorist and some guy named bin Laden who is now America's most wanted criminal. It was really strange because the day before, on September 10th 2001 my church held an all church prayer and prayed for the country. I didn't go to it because it was a school night but that was really weird for our church because it was like we predicted it. Later we heard and watched as another plane in Pennsylvania who was thought to be heading to the capitol or White House. It was very sad and it still is when you see all those tv shows that had the Twin Towers in them. Right away I thought about my cousin who flew with United and he was on duty that day. On September 11, 2001 I drove to my classes at the University of Minnesota completely unaware of what had happened, because I'd decided to listen to a CD that morning. When I arrived, my classmates were sitting in the hallway, speaking quietly and solemnly to one another, completely in shock. When they told me what had happened, I thought they were joking. The idea that anyone could or would possibly attack New York City was ludicrous to me. That was at about 8:30 in the morning, and the last anyone had heard was that one of the two towers had been hit. They still thought it was all just a horrible accident, and there were no tvs around for us to find out otherwise, until another of our classmates arrived. She had been glued to her television and then her radio; as a middle-aged woman from New York City she was far more personally involved in what was happening than any of us. She told us the towers had collapsed. No one wanted to believe her; we were so isolated from what was happening that we had no way of fully comprehending the magnitude of the events that were unfolding. At that moment, I remembered that my uncle was supposed to be at a meeting in the World Trade Center, requesting funding for a documentary he was trying to film. I raced to the pay phone and tried to reach my mother, but it wasn't until much later in the morning that I was finally able to get any information about my uncle: he'd cancelled his meeting at the last minute so he could take his daughter to school; she'd missed the bus. To this day, I don't know if she realizes just what a huge impact that one little detail had on her family; she was barely a teenager at the time, and relatively unaware of cause-and-effect relationships. The most eerie thing I remember her mother telling me, though, was very much related: she said that the hardest part of that entire nightmare of a day was the moment when she pulled up in front of her kids' school in Princeton, New Jersey, and saw all of the hundreds of kids whose parents hadn't shown up to pick up their kids. The chill she felt at the thought of all of those children who would never get to see their parents again... I could feel it creep into my own spine the moment she told me, and I began to cry for the first time that day. I had watched the footage again and again, but that one little image made the whole scenario real to me, and to this day it still brings tears to my eyes, and probably always will. On that day, I was so terrified for him, I begged him not to go. He promised me that he would be careful and come home with "no holes" in him, and told me that this only made him prouder to be joining up. He kept his promise, even after a year in an airstrip just north of Baghdad he affectionately called "the sand pit." My best friend's husband was in the Navy at the time, a chaplain's assistant on the Teddy Roosevelt, but because he'd broken his foot a few days before, he was allowed to delay his departure for a few weeks, just long enough to marry her...and get her pregnant! He was at sea until about two weeks before she gave birth to their beautiful baby girl; she was baptised on board the ship and now has her name engraved on the Roosevelt's ship's bell. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think what should be remembered is the raw humanity that was exposed in all of us that day. I remember seeing footage of Rudy Giuliani without his toupee as he fled underground with his staff, and hearing the words he said that day and many days after, and thinking to myself: I never would have known just how utterly human that man really was and how much compassion he was capable of unless I'd seen his reaction to this horrific tragedy. We all spoke a little softer that day; we all felt a little more vulnerable, we all appreciated the simple things in life just a little bit more. Aboout a week after September 11th, someone handed out American flags to everyone in our neighborhood. For the Fourth of July that year, I'd bought a baseball hat that simply said "U.S.A" on the front with the American flag beneath the letters, and "2001" on the back. Ever since Spetember 11th, I have appreciated the irony of the fact that that year, of all years, happened to be the first one when I'd bought a hat with an American flag on it for the 4th of July. We have a small office of 8 people and our boss said he had just heard that a plane hit the World Trade Center. We all headed to the conference room and turned on the TV. From there we watched over the next few hours as the second plane hit and then eventually watched as the 2 towers fell one after the other. By noon some of us were wondering whether it was safe to try and head home, we all live in different areas, some in New Jersey, some in the other boroughs. We were all so frightened but we also were wondering if it was over, there was talk of 6 or 8 planes having been hijacked. It seemed for a while that no place was safe. That's something that most Americans had never though of or felt before 9-11. I don't think most of America considered what it must be like in other countries, where people are killed every day in the midst of some of the most mundane activities like buying coffee or seeing a movie. Since then everything has changed. The most frighteneing part for both my wife and myself was waiting in front of Penn Station for the trains to come in. We did not know that the government had ordered fighter jets to fly over the city and for brief moment we were not sure if the planes we could hear were ours or another hijacked flight. I don't put off get-togethers because you never know what can happen next. I'm sure no one that went into the WTC on that beautiful sunny morning had even the slightest idea what might happen to them. When I have the opportunity to take a day off, I do it. I probably spend a little more cash than I use to on my social life, dinners, movies, parties than I did. I hate to quote an overused phrase but I try to "Live for Today" in a lot of respects. My job is no longer one of the most important parts of my life. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Most of the country saw 9-11 from a TV screen, others saw it first hand. We smelled the smoke and debris and saw the ash cover the streets. We saw the people who had walked down dozens of flights of stairs to get to the streets only to end up sprinting to escape the collapsing towers. I talked to a man who's face was cut up by glass who survived because he had gone downstairs to get himself a bagel and coffee before starting his day, he had no idea what happened to his co-workers. We watched as people who on a normal day would not give the other a second glance step forward and lend a hand. My wife and I waited for 4 hours so we could get a train into New Jersey. Police and bomb squads had to walk the tunnel connecting NY and NJ before they would allow any trains through. On a normal day, people are always pushing and stepping on each others feet, but on that day, it seemed there was plenty of room for everyone no matter how packed it got. We huddled around the windows when we came out of the tunnel and looked at the end of Manhattan Island, the tip engulfed in a cloud of smoke. On the morning of September 11th, I was pulling into the parking lot at work just before the first plane hit Tower 1. I remember as I was getting ready to turn off the car radio, I heard that a commuter jet had just hit the WTC. Immediately I thought that it was a terrible accident, and quickly went inside to turn on the TV. Of course, that was just the beginning. Soon after, there was the horrible scene on TV of the second plane hitting Tower 2. Everyone was just riveted to the news cast, hoping that this was a horrible accident. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. My day began with an early morning taxi to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). My destination was Denver. It took me a year to get there. Our flight was the last one cleared for take off that day. At something like twenty minutes in the air the captain announced over the public address system that the FAA had closed the U.S. air space and we were landing at the Las Vegas McCarran Airport. I learned from the person sitting near me (or possibly the captain) that a World Trade Center tower in New York City had been once again the target of a bomb. After disembarking, telephoning relatives in Denver and Los Angeles, and listening to the radio of a news/candy seller, I made my way to a lounge where a television showed the billowing smoke, then the second plane attacking another World Trade Center tower, and its total collapse. People kept moving forward toward the set as seats vacated until those remaining learned that we all had to leave: the airport was being closed. I exited toward the main terminal building, passed armed officers marching to secure the McCarran Airport, and reached a scene of some order and much chaos: large crowds, long lines, and rental car counters with signs that said "no cars are available." While waiting for a public telephone I had the good fortune to hear a limosine driver asking if someone wanted to fill out the passenger quota for his Lincoln Continental which was to leave for LAX as soon as it was completed. I knew that train and bus service was not available, decided quickly that money was not important, and joined what became a four hour ride covering over three hundred mile, having paid with a credit card. The driver took the three other passengers to Orange County and Long Beach destinations before dropping me at my home five miles north of LAX. Usually when I reach home after a trip I unpack. This time I dropped the luggage just inside the front door, headed straight for the television, and sat down. I was limp. It was only hours since my early morning taxi had called for me. All I could do was stare as images came across the screen. My life had been centered on New York for its first twenty years. Indeed only four years earlier I'd stood on a rooftop at a cocktail party of my college. Another alumnus took my picture. The two World Trade Center towers are clearly visible in the photograph. Their site is a scant mile away from the college building we stood upon, and I'd recently walked that distance the day of the photograph. I couldn't move: it was an effort to sit and watch my birth city replace Pearl Harbor as the site of America's greatest one day loss of life. I live five miles from the most prominent terrorist target on the West Coast, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). As a child I experienced World War II. At age eight I read about the A-bomb, looked a maps in the newspaper, and knew that one such weapon detonated over lower Manhattan would kill everyone from there up until where I lived in the northern Bronx. Now I'm aware day by day that our ports are vulnerable, and that the Cole and World Trade Center towers could be just preliminaries to attacks on Los Angeles or other major U.S. cities. I look at people, trees, flowers: I don't think I did before September 11th. I choose to be relaxed, focussed on things that matter to more people or just to myself. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The diversity of those who worked in the World Trade Center towers. The way pain came to so many. The message delivered so cruelly, that this killing is not different from what we support through embargos, corrupt regimes, and inaction - penury instead of generosity being the main characteristic of this, the wealthiest of the world's nations, when it comes to assisting the poorest countries. I didn't fly an American flag myself, but my wife did, and she gave flag pins to others. We can identify the flag with the firemen, police, and other rescue workers. But it is true that the international community suffered greviously September 11th. We should be pulling together with other people and governments all over the world. The flag symbolizes our people and this country. But working as a single nation is not the answer to terrorism. We don't have a monopoly on truth, just as we didn't lose only U.S. citizens on September 11th. Well, I was actually driving home from Idaho Falls with my Mom and my younger brother when it happened. We turned on the radio at about nine o' clock, and the news of the inccident was on nearly every station (which is totally understandable)! Acually, the attacks had already happened when we found out, because of the time zone stuff. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Well, not even close to the amount of change that happened to New York City or to someone who lost a loved one in the attacks. My life hasn't changed a lot, because I live so far from New York City. I haven't flown on a plane since the attacks, so I haven't witnessed the security changes in the airports across the nation. My life has changed though, because I now realize more than ever that there are people out there who will kill themselves, men, woman, and children for their own benifit. An it makes me sad that they would do somthing like that. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the men, woman, firefighers, and poliemen that risked their lives to save others should be remembered. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, my family and I did fly an American Flag after the September 11th attacks. I do find it sad, however, that most people started expressing their love for our country after September 11th. Don't get me wrong, that is a fantastic reason to do so, but I think that is so sad that we weren't showing our patriotism beforehand. I do realize that some people are patriotic and express their gratitude to live in such a great and wonderful country, but most people just started showing that appreciation after the attacks. I think that the attacks were a wake call to the American people to realize that we are so lucky to live a land where we are able to have our freedom, and I think that we take that for granted. I feel bad that I wasn't showing my appreciation to the men and women that made my freedom possible. Now I am more than ever, so greatful for such a wonderful country where I am able to have my freedom, and to have a beautiful flag to represent it. And I am pround to say that, "I AM AN AMERICAN!!!" I remember the shift was very quiet.Excellent weather, no Air Traffic control problems etc. I was sipping coffee, and chatting with the dispatcher next to me, when a Crew Scheduler turned around in her chair, and said a plane just hit the WTC. We thought it was probably a sightseeing plane, or traffic helicopter or some such thing. We eventually did turn the TV on in the office, and saw the fire. I phoned to Cape Cod to my Mom and told her to put the TV on, and while talking to her, the second plane hit. The fact it was a second airplane really didn't register as we thought it was a tape of the first airplane. Around this time, we got word of the Air Traffic System shutting down till noon, then 2pm and then indefinately. The timing of the crashes(Pentagon,WTC) were such that our planes were mostly in their hubs. After confirming all our aircraft were on the ground, I went out for air and a co worker came out for air shortly after and mentioned the crash of flt. 93. She also mentioned a prison was nearby. Through all this, we realized how close we worked to Three Mile Island (our office is 2 or 3 miles from TMI) we wondered if it were a target. Soon after, I gave up my computer to crew scheduling so they could move around displaced crews and I went home. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed in that I don't feel safe about my job at an airline. I've become very cynical about the airline industry. I thought it was very cold that Gordon Bethune laid off all those people at Continental the saturday after the attacks. Newark NJ is a Continental hub and I'm sure some of the people laid off had relatives in the rubble. Sadly, the bottom line has to be met, but the layoffs, etc. have solidified my belief in Socialism. Don't let anyone tell you different, but the airlines weren't hurt by the terrorists but by the greed of the people who own or manage them from high up. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson thought it was God's punishment against gays et all, well, September 11 was not God, it was not Satan. September 11 was just life nothin more. Christians (which I am) are very capable of the terrorism that the Al Queda has done. The United States was attacked (wrongly attacked I must stress...innocent people had no cause to die...the Al Queda absolutely must be beaten)because we really are arrogant as a nation. This arrogance such as for example not being in on the landmine treaty, the way we fear Cuba etc. Is what led to this. Bush mentioned also "you are with us or against us" is laughable as it is polarizing and let's no one have a dissenting opinion which is what this country is all about. The other thing he mentioned about hating liberty is crazy because they would have attacked Canada and Australia as well. It is American arrogance that caused this. Make no mistake though, the attacks were criminal and cowardly and the people who died or injured were innocent and didn't deserve what happened. I don't know who in the future will read this 50,100 years from now, but keep your family and friends as treasures in your heart. I think the people all hunkered down in front of the tv, flying the flag on the front porch, and being too afraid to fly really don't deserve to fly the flag. I sat in the conference room with my colleagues at 8:50 am and was told by one of the principals of my company that a small commuter plane had struck the World Trade Center. After our meeting, around 9:30 am, I quickly went to the internet, which was moving at a snail's pace. Suddenly, on a news website, I saw the picture of the towers burning. One of my co-workers shouted, "My God, another plane hit!" I immediately thought of my father and my sister's fiance, both of whom work at 101 Barclay Street across from the South Tower. I said to myself, "They'll get the fire out, it'll be all right...but some people are already dead." I began hearing my co-workers talk about bomb scares at the Capitol, a commuter plane being shot down near Camp David, and another plane striking the Pentagon...and they all culminated into the one word that conveyed the ugly truth of these events: terrorism. I switched back to the net news, and saw one tower was gone! By 10:30, they were both gone...completely and utterly gone. At around 12:30 pm, I had to go out into the field...and that involved negotiating some traffic. I went out on Route 3 eastbound, and was quickly passed up by over a dozen fire trucks, rescue vehicles, convoys of police cars, and ambulances, sirens wailing as loud as they could go. In the distance, I saw a massive gray cloud over Manhattan Island...like the eruption of a huge volcano has doused downtown in an ashen darkness. I went to my site, and could already hear military helicopters, news helicopters, and fighter jets soaring overhead. I listened intently to the news, wondering if even the news reporters could contemplate what had just happened. Around 1:15, I drove down Schuyler Avenue past the Hudson County Landfill, which overlooks the Hudson River and Manhattan...and I saw it up-close. Several bystanders watched in absolute awe, some standing on their cars, as the fires raged downtown and the smoke stretched all the way to Brooklyn. Tears welled up in my eyes, and my stomach churned at the thought of so much death. Before leaving, I called my wife, telling her that I was all right...she had been watching the whole thing on television. To a person who had just immigrated to this country a month ago, this was horrible - to think she was 3 miles as the crow flies from the worst terrorist attack on American soil in history. She told me, "I want to go home" (meaning back to Britain). That hurt me even more. I eventually got a hold of my mother, who informed me that my father had made it out of downtown Manhattan before the first tower fell...he told me he watched people fall, saw bodies on the ground sprawled all over, blackened faces of burn victims, and men and women screaming on the upper floors of Tower 2, running around with their bodies wrapped in shrouds of flame. He said, "God, take care of those people." 20 seconds later, the tower fell. When I got home around 6:30 pm, one hour after 7 WTC fell and damaged my father's building, I saw him. He was sunburned, his hair a bit dusty, and his eyes bloodshot from walking from Liberty Street to Pier 31, then from Weehawken to Hoboken where he had parked his car. Mind you, he's 51 and an ex-smoker (well, not anymore after that day). I hugged him and cried my heart out. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes. I have become closer to my father because I was spared the agony of losing him. He is fighting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with a combination of medicine and therapy, along with the family love that we have for each other. I am blessed that he was spared, and I am lucky to have him as a closer part of my life. I now feel that I cannot, and dare not, take anything or anyone for granted, because it may not be there tomorrow. A friend of mine lost his cousin, another his wife, a third his uncle, who was the pilot of the second plane to hit the towers. These suffering friends...and the family and friends of the 2,801 souls delivered to God that day...they are the people I cry for. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The generosity of Americans, who unfortunately only seem to come out during times of great need. I think this should teach people to give selflessly 24/7/365, and to not wait until some great natural or national disaster to offer help to those in need (e.g. waiting until 9/11 to line up around the corner to give blood instead of doing that many months ago when the Red Cross was screaming "blood shortage"). We should remember the people who opened their hearts and, with their rhetoric and their loving actions, our minds; we should give no heed to the narrow-minded, closeted bigots who were so ready to destroy "the enemy." The enemy killed himself on September 11, himself and many others. We should also remember that vengeance is bittersweet, and to rise above the ashes of destruction of that fateful day, we should instead proclaim with a voice of peace, the words of the Scottish hero William Wallace (paraphrased in the movie Braveheart): "...they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom." I have been flying the American flag in my heart since long before September 11th. No, my feelings have not changed about the flag...it is still a symbol of a good democratic government, but my feelings have not changed. I still disagree with many of the policies of our government that, perhaps, may have brought us to the events of 9/11. I disagree with the pandering of political officials, who sat idly by wheedling the special interests while the terrorists schemed in dark corners to plot this country's demise (and failed miserably, mind you). I disagree with the commercialism that has sprouted up as a result of this tragedy. I disagree with the "anti-Islam" rhetoric that has cropped up as a result of that day's events. What I do agree with is generosity, peace, togetherness, understanding, and love...and they were all represented by the good people of this country the day after and every day since. I am a proud American, first generation of a family of Italian and Sicilian immigrants, married to a beautiful Welsh woman, and prepared to move forward rather than look back. The towers have fallen, but lower Manhattan will be rebuilt. The Pentagon was damaged, but it will be rebuilt. The fields of Somerset Pennsylvania were scorched with the blood-infused fires of "the forgotten 40," but the grass shall grow back, greener than ever. I have moved forward from September 11, 2001, and when I fly the flag, I shall fly it because *I* am proud of it, not because society is telling me that I am obligated to do it. I shall say "God Bless America" not because it is a nice bumper-sticker slogan or because it is the "in" thing to do lest we upset the general public in a time of ultra-PC sensitivity, but because I believe in God, and I believe in America...I did before...and I shall continue to do so. I was told that an airplane had crashed into one of the twin towers. I ran to the teachers room and watched in horror as I saw the towers crashing to the ground. I learned that it was two planes an not just one. I went back to the class room shaking and upset As time went on that day I learned of more airplanes and that the pentagon had been hit. I was trying not to let the children know but as the day went on parents were picking up their children one after another. and that is when I really got nervous for my own children being alone. and where the next attack was going to hit going to hit. I called home only to find out that two people on the plane were at an aniversary party I had been at the week end before. the rage that went through me double. If only we had known a bit sooner the lives that could have been saved. I only knew these people for a brief moment but their lives and the lives of all that have been hurt by this tragic event will stay with me forever. May peace and freedom reign for all. I had just got back from a rather uncomfortable journey by train from Colorado,so I was telling people that Amtrak should be re-named "AmCrap". Also,I was still smarting over not getting a callback for a play I audtioned for. This was September 10th. On September 11th,I woke up to my mom telling me to watch TV and she uttered something along the lines of "You won't believe it,New York was attacked." I quickly turned on the TV and it was simply unbelieveable,for want of a better word. The second tower had just been hit,the Pentagon was shown, smoldering and wounded.I half-hoped that maybe there was a "Superman" whom could set everything back to it's rightful order. I watched through out the day: The ash that eerily coated those near the WTC, The steady scrawl of names below the coverage, newscasters,actually groping for words for a change because it was'nt something you could sum up neatly. It was horrible,period! My family's from NY,so I always felt very connected to it. I was relieved that none of my family that still lives there and a friend who lives in Greenwich Village were unharmed. Then of course, felt great empathy for the families that lost someone. I cried because I felt so helpless and almost wanted to take a plane and help the recovery efforts but I honestly think I could'nt have handled it emotionally. I sent money to the Red Cross,endlessly discussed "Why?" with my friends and family. Lastly,it made my problems and complaints,so prominent September 10th, utterly trivial,which they were in the first place.. Forgive people easier. Don't get annoyed when I have to pull over for a Firetruck. Call my brother just to tell him I love him(corny but true). In short,when I feel negative ,I think back to that day and realize that one's life should definately be lived to the fullest. Finally, Amtrak really isn't all that bad after all: many people really needed to use them in the weeks following and I am now grateful for them instead. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. It was picture day at my school, so the day was already kind of chaotic. I remember watching the news in many of my classes, and still not knowing very much about what was going on, and it was very frightening. Rumors spread like wild fire in high school, so literally every 5 minutes, i was being told something else. I didnt go to school the next day because i didnt know how to act, or what to say, and there was still so much fear and animosity everywhere. The rest of the week at school, i remember the hallways were very solemn, and it was all any one could talk about. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have become more aware of international events, and am a little more paranoid, but i feel safer at the same time. I took my first flight this summer, and i now feel better about flying. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that it should be remembered that even though it was an unexpected cavillion attack, it was an act of war and should be remembered especially to prevent something like this from happening again. Also, obviously, every single solitary person who lost their life should be remembered with utmost admiration and respect. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I suppose i did become more appreciative of our country, and more aware of its gifts and openings. However, it did make me mad that so many companies made such a profit off of patriotic merchandise right when americans were vulnerable. I think the fact that that made me mad was what made me realize that i had become more patriotic. I turned the TV on just when the second one hit. At first I didn't understand the magnitude of it all until the plane went into the Pentagon. I remember calling my sister crying and at that point I realized our world had changed forever. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't thank God for being able to say that I'm an American. But some days I'm afraid to turn on the TV or radio because of what I'll see. I can honestly say that that was the first time I felt as if every American was mybrother and sister. I felt a comroderie with every person in our country and I believe we all felt that way. Right after the attacks happened, I went out and put my flag up and it has flown every day since and will continue to fly. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I work the overnight shift for a large airline in the mid-west. I had been home a few minutes and decided to run some errands. When I returned, I turned on the television to one of the cable news stations and thought I was watching something from a movie promo. I turned it up and was horrified. I woke up my wife and we stared in awe as the second aircraft hit the towers. Needless to say, I didn't sleep at all that day. I just sat there staring at the televised and video taped broadcasts as the news personalities tried to cope wih the events along with the rest of us. The things I remember most about those days were going to work at night with no inbound flights and our ramp literally full of airplanes from every carrier you could think of. I also remember the silence. There were no aircraft flying! I was 37 years old then and I have never lived more than 20 miles from an airport. All of my life I heard jet engines in the background. The silence was deafening! NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I have to have a security background check to do my job now. Our service has been cut by around 20%. We have retired several fleets of aircraft prematurely. Whan you walk in our hangar there is one wall covered with pictures and stories about coworkers family members involved in the war against terrorism. There are also the flags of all four branches of the United States Military flying in our hangar. Most of us served our country in our time and were proud of our family members that are doing so now. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that most importantly we should remember that it was an unprovoked act of war and that it was waged against inocent civilians and defenseless firefighters. The timing of the 2nd aircraft into the Trade Center was designed to take out rescuers as well as bring down the tower and kill more civilians. It was a barbarous and cunning attack. I did fly my flag after the attacks and I flew in until the Taliban were ran out of Afghanistan. I have served my country in the United States Army. I', proud of my Flag and my Country and September 11, 2001 didn't alter that one bit.
