I was sitting in my front room waiting to go to a 12-Step meeting when I heard on the TV about the first plane crash. It was reported as an air tragedy at the time. My first thought was that it was impossible for a plane to crash into a building like that. I didn't have any theories about what really was going on. I was in a bit of shock that this could happen. Then the news of a possible terrorist attack was announced. My first thought was of the victims. I asked myself questions like, "Who were these people?" "Did they have God in their lives?" More questions arose from within me. The second plane hit while I was watching the TV, and all of a sudden my deepest fears surfaced. Could this really be happening in the USA? My heart sank deeper into despair, vulnerability, and anger. I prayed, and left to go to my meeting. At the meeting I told some people what had just happened, and I saw the look in them that I just experienced in myself- now I knew what I looked like upon hearing the news myself. I heard an interview, post terrorist attacks, from a journalist talking to a man from Pakistan. The man from Pakistan said to the reporter, "If I asked you who you were you would say that I'm an American. But if you asked me who I was, I would say I am a Muslem from Pakistan." That comment affected me deeply and caused me to search for my own identity. Yes I am an American, but now I think it is more important to identify that I am a Christian living in the USA. We should seek to answer why we are hated so much. We should look at the part we have played in this happening. If we don't we will have more attacks upon this great nation. We must change our approach to dealing with other countries and realize that a country is really made up of people first, and politics second. We as a nation should release the control we have on food. Would Jesus take food away from us? He instead fed his enemies. We should do the same. We are punishing the wrong people. On september 11, my mom woke me up about 2 hours earlier than usual. I was wondering why and then she said "Hurry up and watch the television" i went to the kitchen and I saw all sort of chaos going on. A few days ago my science class watched a video on the twin towers. They said it was made of all steel and very hard to break. A few minutes later someone who was filming caught the second plane hitting the second tower. This is when things turned out really bad and then the first tower hit the ground. A few moments later the second one hit the ground. It was quite sad that all those people died and everyone was innocent. When I got to school everybody was talking about it. Teachers were showing the news in classes all day. Things were very sad. I hope something as horible as this never occurs again. I was in Health class and our principal Mr. Sherman came over the announcements and told us what had happened to the Twin Towers. I didn't really realize what had happened at first, but when I saw it on the news I was shocked to see what had happened to the lives of many innocent people. My brother Eric, was in boot camp for the United States Marines when this all first happened. My family and I were worried that after he graduated he would be sent to Afganistan. This didn't happen because his unit hasn't been activated at this time. We worry that if the war continues his unit will be activated. My Uncle Terry is a pilot for the United States Marines. He flies herrier jets and he too is at risk if this war continues and we're unable to catch all the terrorists. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that many things should be remembered about the events on September 11th. The first would be that the United States is not ammune from terrorists attacks. We need to remember that hate brings about terrorists beliefs. We must all have compassion and understanding for all walks of life no matter how different from our own. As for the people who died during the attacks on September 11th we should always remember their sacrafice by never allowing this to happen again in the United States of America. On September 11th I was in Italian class at 9:30 and someone walked in and said "a commercial plane crashed into some buildings." Honestly I didn't even know what she was talking about, so my first thought was,'Oh no, not another one of those small planes crashed.' Then things started to get a little bit clearer, my teacher started to become concered on what the girl was saying, and then the principal came over the loud speaker and announced that a terrorist act has occured and two planes crashed into the twin towers. After the announcment I was just plain confused. I had no idea about terrorism, I just thought it was some sick people doing this. My next thoughts were where my family was, I have family working right next to the twin towers that are in their for meetings often. Unfortunetly I didn't get to actually see what was going on until about 12 my english teacher brought us in a room to watch tv, then it hit me. Wow! How could anyone do this? Whats going to happen to all those poeple? Are these sick people going to come to Boston? Are they going to come just drop random bombs? The terrorist did their job through me, they put fear, horror and sadness in me. It never really hit me until I got home, I called my mother and I could not stop crying, my dad had to close are family business so he could come home to me so I wouldn't be alone, I was freaking. I couldn't even go to school the next day, I was terrified, all I wanted to do was be with my mother. Then I had later learned that my cousin was in one of the buildings, he ran out and made it home on the last train safely before the second plane hit, while my other cousin was left behind, gratefully not in the twin towers but a couple streets down, he had to walk down the streets and see his friends dying, and dead bodies falling. Yes, September 11th has greatly changed my life in some positive ways and some negative way. Now I'm always in fear, of what can happen next, of all our men in afganistan, the where abouts of Osama Bin Laden and are my walking down the street right next to one of these terrorists. After September 11th, I never wanted to leave my mothers side, it was awful, I wanted to know where all my family was at all times, my fear became an obsession. In positive ways I realize what hero's we have in our country, and how far police departments and fire departments go for their job. It makes me feel proud that I live in a country where people are willing to risk their lives for others, it gives me a sense of proudness and safety. The singing of the national anthem was no longer a procedure before a football or baseball game, the pledge of allegiance was not a pain in the neck thing I had to memorize. Everytime I do one of these rituals my mind always drifts to September 11th, everytime. The most important thing I think we should all remember about September 11th is all the hero's without them the number of people that died could have been tripled. I remember traveling everywhere with my mom to find a flag, but every store we would go to would say sold out. The extreme amount of patriotism that this country showed was unbelievable. I'll never forget the candle vidual we did throughout the whole country, I remember walking down the street and almost every house someone was sitting outside with a candle in their hand. Share your experience. my remembernce the day was going just like any other day. it was tuesday september 11, 2001. i was getting out of first peroid class going to second. i was going to science with my favorite teacher mr. keating. as i walk in he seen confused and upset. now mr. keating is exciting teacher and only gets mad if we weren't good for the sub and the day before that we didn't have a sub. i asked him what was wrong and he just told me to go to my seat. after everybody was seated he looked at us like he was gonna cry. he told us about what happened with the world trade centerand the plan crahing into it. at first i couldn't hear him because he was talking to soft and so i asked him to repeat what he said. it took me the second of him repeating for me to acctuly understand and when i did just placed my head down on my desk. mr. keating made it clear that we didn't know much about it, like if it was an accident or not, who did it,if it was an american. when he was finished talking he turned on the t.v. and the we the second tower go down. during the restof the day it was really quite and emotional. every now and then you would hear people wisper to each other about it. The same thing happened on my mothers birthday, November 22, 1963,thirty three years later, on her birthday she too passed away.It's a hell of a way to be reminded of their birth and death days, but I am fortunate to have had them for the time that I did. The families who lost their ANGELS on Sept. 11, 2001 weren't as lucky. I couldn't bring myself to go to the cemetery on Sept. 11,2001, but I did go today, for my father, for our HEROES, for the ANGELS who were taken from us on that horrific day and for all of us who were left behind and who WILL NEVER FORGET. I attend a State University in Maryland, so I was getting dressed and ready for class with the news on. I saw that one of the towers was on fire. I thought it was an accident. Then I watched the live coverage of the second plane hitting the other tower. Then I knew it wasn't an accident. I forgot about getting out to my class and just sat in my dorm room alone and watched helplessly as the two towers fell. It was so horrifyingly unreal. My friend from downstairs came up sobbing hysterically saying that we were going to war and soon the attackers would drop a nuclear bomb. It was hard to stay calm. I couldn't believe this was happening, and I didn't know what would happen next. Another friend came over in tears. Then, we just sat on the couch holding each other and sobbing for all those people who lost their lives or their loved ones. And then, the three of us said the Lord's Prayer. I've never shared my faith with my friends the way I did that day. It was awkward at first, and then comforting. Classes were cancelled, people were too stunned to even notice anyway. In the dining hall, there were T.V.s wired in every corner turned to the news. Everyone was speaking in whispers and the mood was incredibly somber. I remember it being a gorgeous cloudless September day, but the feeling you got walking around campus that day was dark and gray. But I've lived in MD all my life, and I've visited both cities numerous times. I have family and friends from New Jersey and a couple work in NY. Luckily they weren't in any danger. However, regardless of where I'm from, I still can feel for my fellow citizens and I worry about this country as well. We have many other countries who don't like us. We need to reach an understanding with these countries, instead of start a war that will put us in a dangerous situation to be attacked again as well as take the lives of our soldiers. I guess my life has changed in the fact that I'm more aware and worried about the rest of the world then my own problems in my own little world. Actually, I hope I keep in mind the fact that there are bigger problems in this world than my personal problems and take that with me always. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the thing about Sept. 11th that should be remembered is Sept. 12th. That was the day that the sun rose again and we all awoke with a new purpose, not as individuals, but as a nation. We donated blood, wrote letters, held memorial services, called our loved ones,and reevaluated our lives. Some of us had the privilege and honor to help overcome the tragedy first hand, to help rebuild America, and to help rebuild our confidence in the true heroes of our country. We should also remember the way we feel now when we see our flag and hear our National Anthem as well as other patriotic songs. This renewed sense of nationality should be with us always so we remember how we all came together, and how we will continue to come together. I know that personally, I will never be able to listen to the song "America the Beautiful" without tears coming to my eyes. I've always had a flag flying outside my front door, but I definitely look at it in a different light. I look at it and see it as the symbol that has been present at all of our triumphs and tribulations as a country. The statue of the flag being staked at Iwo Jima, the image of the flag flying over the site of the former Towers: these are the images that will always be sybolically linked with the flag outside my door. However, one word of caution: The symbol of our flag and the patriotism that comes with it should be a celebration of our country, and not a humiliation of every other country in this world. Every country has it's positive and negative characteristics, including the USA. We should look upon our country with love and pride, but not look upon other countries with hatred. For if we did that, wouldn't we be as low as those who flew those planes into the Towers and into the Pentagon? It's easy to hate, it's harder to forgive. Let the flag be a symbol for hope and confidence in our country and not a battle cry for the destruction of other countries. While arriving at the nursing home to visit my mother in law , her tv was on, all the nurses aides and nurses were in her room when we arrived, many were crying, some were praying. the only one not affected was my mother in law, she had alhemizers, and for the first time, what a blessing for her. we watched tv with the nurses and other staff for a few minutes and felt an urgency to get home, our two daughters were in middle school, we were concerned they would call, and would need to hear our voices, assuring them we were ok, and they were ok, even though we all were many miles and many states away. Once we arrived home, we turned the tv on immediately, that's when the second plane had crashed into the WTC. We immediately fell on our knees and prayed for all those people, and we cried. we couldn't leave the tv, even though we didn't want to hear what was happening, even though we knew people were dying, we knew this tragedy was changing America, and life as we knew it, we knew we were watching history, and the kind of history we didn't want to experience. I'll never forget my husband's word's, they cut like a knife, We are now in war, and those poor people are the first casualties. May God have mercy on our country. Yes, my life and my family's life has changed because of Sept. 11. We are more cautious, more fearful, more loving, more prayerful, more considerate, more compassionate, more loving, more tolerant, more patient, more God-fearing. We've made a few changes in our home as well, we are more careful regarding our surroundings, we are more polite to others, In public we only do things as a buddy doing things together. I was getting ready to leave for work when I heard that a plane had struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. I quickly turned on the TV to see smoke belching from a gaping hole in the tower. Minutes later,I watched live as the second plane hit the south tower. I will never forget the shiver of fear that shook me at that moment. It was immediately obvious that this was a deliberate act. I picked up my 9 month old son, a mother's instinctive urge to protect at a time of fear and uncertainty. Having never been to New York City, the actual scale of the disaster wasn't immediately apparent to me... the size of those huge towers compared with the rest of the New York skyline gave me no references. I thought maybe it was private planes that had hit the towers. Then, the I heard the newscasters saying there could be as many as 50,000 people total in the two towers. On the way to work, I comforted myself with the thought that this is the United States of America. Strongest military power in the world. I knew that our greatest military minds would be focused on stopping the attack. I was certain that these two attacks would be the end of the terror. At work, I turned on the radio and listened as the media reported that the Pentagon had been hit and that commercial liners believed to be hijacked were still in the air. I don't think I have ever been that scared in my life. These unknown assailants were hitting us at the heart of our military might. The symbol of our status as a great military force. I couldn't imagine things getting worse. The horror that had already occurred was so mind-boggling I couldn't wrap my brain around it. Then, things got horribly worse. The south tower collapsed. I remember being overwhelmed with horror and grief at the thought of the thousands still trapped inside plunging downward. Hope prevailed that some would manage to be rescued from the clouds of debris and the tangle of wreckage that used to be the South Tower. Then the north tower fell. I couldn't believe it. In less than two hours, thousands had been injured or extinguished. I knew rescue workers would be working frantically to get to those trapped. From our vantage point, that of the news cameras, you couldn't see the fires still burning or the massiveness of the rubble. We still had hope in the face of our fear and grief. Over the next few days, I cried as I watched desperate wives, husbands, sons, daughters, parents, and friends searching for word of their loved ones. I watched as they pleaded on TV for any, just any news about these people who were the center of their lives. I watched a nation come together in a time of such difficulty. Flags displayed everywhere. A people fierce in their determination that we would stand to the last person in order to live in freedom! We would not be bowed by the cowardly terrorists and their gruesome tactics. I was so proud to be an American as the stories of bravery and selflessness emerged from that day. A man who stayed with a handicapped colleague to comfort him when he easily could have escaped the world trade centers. Firefighters climbing toward doom and chaos as others evacuated. Thousands pouring out with food and blood donations and opening their wallets. A group of suburbian kids selling lemonade to raise money for the victims. A small child making peanut butter sandwiches for fire fighters and other workers toiling in the wreckage. Everyone wanting to give what they could to help. No one bowing to the terror of that day. I spend less time worrying about the laundry and more time laughing with him. I never end a conversation or go to bed without telling my loved ones that I love them. I understand more now than every our kinship as human beings. No matter where we live or what our lifestyle. We are all relatives on this journey through life. Things I didn't think were important to me or that my contribution towards was so small it wasn't worth the effort, have taken on new meaning. I do a better job of recycling and I take elections more seriously. One voice does count! Even if my voice is weak or the opposition is louder, my voice must be heard! I can make a difference for humanity. We must all strive to make the good outweight the evil. For my child's sake, for my family's sake, for humanity's sake. We must be more determined than ever that this twisted, evil people will fail. It will take each one of us, willing to do our utmost, to ensure that good prevails. The importance of those people to their families, their communities and their representation of each of us as wives, husbands, sons, daughters, and parents. The incredible goodness that arose from the ashes. The bravery of those who died to save others. Knowing that they would die and choosing to make their last moments count for the rest of us. We can't ever forget that these people paid the ultimate price to live in a free world. I think they would have rather lived free knowing they would die, than to live a half life in oppression. It was around 7:10 Pacific time, and while eating, the television was on, but nobody was really watching or listening to it. When my mother was driving me to school, the radio was on and I didn't understand what they were saying. When my mom started crying, I tried to listen better and heard something about the World Trade Centers being hit by airplanes. The second one was hit while I was in the car. At school, everybody was talking about the crashes and spreading the word. All day at school we were in our advisory groups and discussed every aspect of what had happened and why it happened. The day, for me, was mind boggling because no one had expected anything of the sort. I remember that there was nothing on the TVs but scenes of the crashes. Even now, I can recall the pictures. I did not know how New Yorkers were feeling until I saw the scenes, especially the ones of people jumping out of the windows, many stories high. It was the morning of Sept. 11, with nothing unusual happening at the Turner Institute of Police Science in the Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. except my co-workers and I were providing some training for new police recruits who were going to help us with videotaping the demonstrators at the I.M.F./World Bank meetings that were to take place in DC later that month. As we were in a classroom discussing the functions of the cameras they would be using, a police officer came into the room to let me know that a plane had just flown into the World Trade Center in New York and that it was on the T.V. At that moment we told the class to take a break for about 20 min. and we went to our office to watch the news reports. We saw the 2nd plane hit the other tower and then we heard about the plane which hit the Pentagon. At that point classes were cancelled and my co-workers and I, who work in the Media Production Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department packed up our camera equipment and decided to go straight to the Pentagon and see if we could do anything to help. As we were on the way, the Department was in the process of closing down some of the highways and bridges in the area and we found ourselves needing to stop to help direct traffic around a couple of congested areas. Once we finished that we were able to get onto the grounds of the Pentagon and it was chaos as everyone was being evacuated from the area. We heard on our police radio that our helicopter unit and the persons on the ground at the Pentagon were having trouble organizing, so we were able to help give the helicopter unit and the organizers for the military assistance by letting the helicopter know who to contact so that they could land and be of assistance. We were one of the first video units on the scene and when we started to film the tragedy, there seemed to be a sence of shock but commitment to the efforts of everyone doing their job to try and rescue and help anyone who needed it. As I was shooting the scene of members of the miliary leaving the Pentagon, rescue personnel arriving on the scene, police officers attempting to close off access to the area, I was walking toward to impact site of the Pentagon expecting to find large parts of the airplane scattered over the ground and pieces of the plane sticking out of the Pentagon, but there was nothing on the ground except a couple of knocked over street lights and a piece of what looked like the landing gear from the plane. The portion of the Pentagon that the plane hit was a great mound of fire and smoke. If you didn't know what happened at that site, you would think that the building simply blew up from some great interior explosion. I could not see any evidence of an airplane at all and I was only about 150 yards away from the zone since we were with the police department. When I am in a situation like that, I have a tendency to concentrate on the matter of my job which is to get the best shots I can possibly get to document the things that were happening and to show the effects of the event on not only the building but the people involved and their response to the attack. I found that once I finished my job and took the time to relax I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd seen and listening to news reports of the terrorism in New York, Pennsylvannia, and here in D.C. Since I work for a law enforcement agency, I am forced to be more observant of things which ordinarially I might consider normal or run of the mill. The Metropolitan Police Department is probably considered one of the best police agencies in the nation and as such we try to stay on the forefront of security issues. Thats why i am so upset and i feel so bad that i never watch tv. When i got to school everyone seemed so sad. I had no idea what had happened but everyone else did. I reached for the remote to turn on the Today Show and listen to the news. This was routine for me. The first image on the TV screen was the first tower to be hit in flames and shrouded in smoke. My first reaction was that it was a disaster movie and I had the wrong channel so I tried switching the channel only to discover that it was not a movie but real life and death unfolding before my eyes. From that moment on, I could not relax and my full attention was on the reports and news casts. This continued for more than a week. Gradually, I pulled myself away from the coverage as I could take no more. I couldn't help but think that if it had influenced my life so much, how much more it must have influenced those more directly involved at and with ground zero. Not a single person can escape the insane behavior of the relative few in this life who respect no one but themselves, hear no one speaking but themselves and serve no one but themselves. Such beings serve themselves and cover their cowardliness and evil under some self concocted shroud of holy divine guidance and purpose. Misguiding and misguided they attack diversity out of ignorance and embrace only behavior narrowly specified by dogma and decree which more often that not is equally as misinterpreted as they are misguided. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Diversity and differences need to be approached with knowledge rather than through ignorance with prejudice. It is truly from the differences among and between peoples that we can and do learn and because of our similarities that we can be and often are ignorant and uninformed. Every person has it in their power to be informed and mitigate the inevitable ignorance and experiences of life that shape our misguided prejudices. So, while I will always embrace my culture and my heritage and seek comfort in the ways of life that I have been taught and that are familiar to me, I will endeavor to understand the cultures, ways and heritage of others who seek comfort in places and ways different from my own. To live my life in anyway other than this but feeds the misguided reasoning of the type that led to September 11 and violence throughout the ages. As the saying goes, "Unless you are a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem." I know now that we are given this life but to enjoy, cherish and honor all other life. Our purpose is to teach of and to learn from our differences and to do so from the foundation of our similarities rather than the fears of our differences. I will never again judge another without first trying to understand the why of who they are, what they say, how they dress, how they act or how they speak. I will seek to learn and to understand the differences of lives unlike my own with practices and beliefs foreign to mine. I will not be threatened by differences but learn from them so that I might I might draw conclusions from knowledge rather than fear or ignorance. Perhaps through such behavior, the world can be just a little bit better when I leave it than when I came into it. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, I did fly the flag until and through the 4th of July, 2002. My feelings about the flag have not changed. It is a symbol of my heritage, my country and my freedom. It is not a symbol of the single good or greatness of or in this world. As such, I believe in showing support for our military and respect for all citizens of our nation and will continue to fly the flag as a symbol of my love for these things. However, let there be no mistake, flying any flag of any country with the thought that we are the greatest and we are always right, is as dangerous and fanatical as the beings who perpetrated 9-11. Flying any flag as a symbol of surperiority will surely lead to much suffering and history is filled with pages of the horror such fanatical behavior has reaped. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I woke up early that morning to begin getting ready for school. As i was in the shower my mother kinocked on the bathroom door to tell me that i had to get out and come and see what was happening. As i opened the door i walked into my parents bedroom where my Mother, Uncle and one of my sisters was sitting. I knew something was terriably wrong by the sound of my mother's voice. I asked what was so wrong and all my mother could do was point at the Television. As soon as i looked up i saw the second plane hit. My thoughts were completely drained from my head. What was i supposed to say or think. It seemed as though it was a big dream. Like it was a simulation. In what type of mind state had that pilot been in to that. Then the newbroadcaster came on and narrorated the whole event. I was shocked. I had heard stories of how people went through with hate crimes but never did i actually imagen. I never thought that a person could have so much hate to have 3,000 people fall at their right hand. That day at school i remember it being so hard to bear. every class room had a T.v. on watching the updates and the tapes. i thikn that day i learned the most incredible lession i will every learn in school or in my life time. People don't understand the mercy of god until you whitness the cruel intent of a persons actions. Not only did the worse event happen on September 11 th but also the most amazing, The uniting of all kinds of people in America to come together and save the lives thay can. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed. Not as much as some that have had loses and were right in the heart of it all, but i did learn the biggest moral. I now take things from a different perspective. Life can be disrupted or taken away in a very instant, live as u wish, strive for your goals, and never let some one change your mind about your beliefs. People died that day doing what they love and what they wanted. Some where acheiving what they thought was never possible. Thank God he has the heart of a savior, he is weeping for the lost, praising for the surviors, and forgiving the sinners ( no matter who they are, what they believe, or what that have done). No matter the heart ache we have suffered or been through, we have still looked to god for guidance and we have stuck together to protect ourselves. When i see the flag now being hung and flown over every one's house or a building i think of the people and the struggle we have been through. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. As I was driving to work I heard the news on the radio of a plane hitting the WTC. No one knew any details yet. When I got to work I was the first one to mention the news to my co-workers. I work in a chemical lab and radios are not permitted in our work areas. Anyone with a radio in their office was an important person that day. Once radios were discovered and turned on, people stopped working and listened to the news at it unfolded. It was very hard to listen without the visual picture, especially when the towers collapsed. Many people wanted to leave and be with their families. I couldn't wait to leave and hug my son. That night I was glued to the TV. I just felt that I had to see everything that I could as it happened. I wish I could have been there to help in some way. I wanted to visit ground zero to pay my respects for those lost. I felt that I just had to be there. Unfortunately, I haven't made it there yet. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I still feel the need to visit the sights. I did make it to Shanksville which was an emotional experience for me. I think about 9/11 often and I have bought books and magazines to have for my son when he is old enough to really understand what happened. I am still reluctant to fly although I realize I shouldn't be. I am very afraid of what the future holds, especially for my son. I used to carry the American flag as part of the color guard in high school and have always had respect for the flag. My father was a WWII vet and he also flew his flag every day.
