NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On that day I was doing my job as a School Crossing Guard on Staten Island. After my tour ended (at 8:50 a.m.) I went home to gather up things I would need for a PTA executive board meeting which was scheduled to take place at 9 a.m in our elementary school. I was Vice-President of the PTA. As I walked into the house, my husband said, "Look at this honey, a plane crashed into the WTC." I watched for a few minutes thinking it was a two seater gone off course then left to attend the meeting. I realized I had left my glasses at home and went back to get them (we live directly across the street from the school). As I picked up the glasses from the table and turned to go back out, the second plane hit. My first thoughts were, "Oh God, we are in trouble now!" I went directly to school where I knew I would be needed to help with the crowd of parents who would be coming to pick up their children soon. There was muted chaos in school as one person after another found out about the attacks. Many of our teachers and staff had loved ones who worked in the WTC and downtown Manhattan so everyone was trying to phone and get information. Along with the other PTA members, staff and teachers I began to bring children down to the lobby to be signed out and taken home by their parents. Our security guard was swamped as we required photo ID from everyone picking up a child. All of us who are active PTA members know almost everyone in our school and, as one of the crossing guards I know about one third of the kids, it is a relatively small school with a student population of around five hundered so we were able to help and things moved very quickly. My son and his girlfriend came to school and told me they had missed their usual ferry into Manhattan and had witnessed the entire attack from St. George where the ferry docks. Had they made their usual connection, they would have been on their bicycles just going past the WTC at the time the second plane hit. I remembered two friends who although they did not work in the WTC, were close by. We called the home of one and her husband said she was allright and headed home. We did not find out about the other friend until the next day but she too was allright and headed home immediately after being evacuated from her office, directly across from the WTC. She had been late getting into the city that morning and went directly to her office instead of going to a bank in the WTC as was her custom on Tuesdays. We were fortunate to get through with no problem. Later in the morning two of us went outside to check the grounds of the school. Traffic was stopped and no one was going any where, Staten Island had been locked down by then. There were three people standing on the sidewalk who had just walked over the Bayonne bridge which is one block from our school. They worked in the WTC and told us they got out and just started to walk, not even knowing where they would end up, they all lived in South Jersey. By two o'clock almost all the students had been picked up. I went home and began calling my cousins (five firefighters and one police officer) to find out about their safety. All but one was accounted for. He works in a fire house six blocks from our home,I went there and was told he was at the WTC but allright. All our family members were accounted for and safe as were most the friends we knew, we were thankful to God for keeping them safe. Several of my friends from school lost loved ones in the attack, a firefighter brother, the cousin of one of our teachers, the nephew of our former PTA President, the neighbor of another of our parents. It seemed everyone either had a loved one lost or knew someone who did. We spent the remainder of the day and night watching the television. We prayed for the families of the missing and lost and we prayed for all the people involved in the tragedy. We pray for them every day. I am more suspicious of strangers near our school, although prior to the attacks I was very vigilant, it seems to me I am more so now. I have always loved to fly but now I am just a bit tense all during the flights. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think it is important for all of us to remember the hatered that brought on these attacks without being prejudiced to forigners. A fine line but one we can travel with common sense and faith. We have become an over civilized nation. We should educate the children, the future, to keep a strong defense system ready and be never underestimate the evil nature of our enemies again. We should never forget the sacrifices made by countless people that day who gave their lives so others might live. The uniformed services and civillins who helped their fellow humans get to safety should be memorialized by setting September 11th aside as a day of prayer and rememberance by all of us who survive, similar to Vetrans day or Memorial day. We always had a flag flying, my husband is a Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam. If it is possible to love our flag more, then yes, my feelings have deepened. The aspects of this day of infamy that are definitely worthy of memorial are the acts of heroism. Many people, including firemen, police, and even common people sacrificed much to help others and ultimately, to serve their country. The stories of those who gave their lives in aiding others should never be forgotten, and we as a nation, should hold onto these memories, because we can definitely learn from this event. In addition to that, this event is part of the history of our country, and it is important never to forget the events of history. We should always hold this tragic day in memory. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at the rural school in North Carolina when the first plane hit the towers. Since I had a student teacher in my class room I was able to leave the class for brief periods. It just happen that I was in the principal's office when a parent came in and told us to turn on the TV something bad was happening in New York. We watched in horror as the building smoked and burned. I went quickly up and down the hall telling the teachers what was happening and telling them not to turn on the TV's in class because we did not want to alarm the children. When the second plane hit I was in the principal's office again. We were all shocked and dumbfounded. We were worried about what else could happen. It seemed to be a flash back to films and pictures I had seen of WWII. Then the report came about the Pentegon. I was frozen with fear as my son and daughter in law live and work in DC. I quickly tried to call them. I was pretty sure my son was OK because he works out of the city in Farfax. But my daughter in law was a student at American. I knew she often went to the VA hospital and other sites in DC. I could not get through to them. All the lines were tied up. Eventually, I got a hold of her mother who told me they were OK but that she had been at the VA hospital for hours as they were afraid to let anyone leave. When word of the plane in Pennsyvania came I truly worried for their safety. Parents started coming to the school to pick up their children. We were told by the district supervisors not to tell the children what was happening but to let their parents. They knew something was happening but they did not know what. I felt guilty not telling them but at the same time relieved to know that for one day, one short day, they did not have to see what I had seen. But this summer, as we traveled back from Boston, Mass I just had to see the Manhatten sky line. We stopped off at Liberty Park. I stood across from Manhatten and stared at the space where the proud towers once stood. Suddenly, a man with his family, motioned to us. "Let's move," he said. "There's a book bag lying on that beach with no one around it. No one in New York or New Jersey would do that. We can't be too careful." It struck me then and there, in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty and the New York sky line, that our country was truly changed. Land of the free we still are. But no longer can we be land of the carefree. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? We still live in the most powerful country in the world. When you are on top of mountain many will wish to knock you down. But as the Japanese found out in WWll, they have awakened a sleeping giant. As I traveled to Washington, Boston and New York this summer, I was struck by how much friendlier people seemed to be. That is what I will try to remember about September 11. Not the smoking towers, or the screams of the people, or the tears of those left behind But the strength of a people that can see past their differences and bond together to protect the life that we have and the country that has provided it. I was in english class doing my work and talking to my friends at the same time. My English teacher was discussing something with my Geography teacher. Than she had turn on the television to the news channel. At first it was just about 3 planes that had been highjacked and that one of them had crashed in Pennsylvania or something like it. But than it showed one of the planes hit one of the twin towers. A couple of minutes later it had showed the other plane hit the remaining twin tower. On my way to the doctors office i tuned in to the Howard Stern radio show the time was about 8:55 am EST.One of the regulars came in and said the WTC had been hit by an airplane i took it as one of the many horrible jokes that were common on his show.I then tuned into WINS news right after just to make sure that it was just a cruel joke,to my horror it was not.Knowing the doctors office supplied a TV to the waiting patients i sped up to get there only to have my heart drop to the floor,it was unimaginable.The eery thing about that moment was everyone around me seemed calm but i was an uncoiling emotional wreck.I'm 35 now originally from NY.I was at the time in Philadelphia.Maybe they just were not grasping the enormity and horror of it all at the time but till today it puzzles me.All the patients in the waiting room that day were all over the age of sixty. I asked was it an outside attack and she said yes. She works for a congressman so had the TV on in the office. Later I ran into the street as I heard a loud explosion..it was theplane hitting the Pentagon...most of our neighbors were in the street as well and we were all frightened but ignorant of what had happened. The hardest part came later when I found out that a man I had grown up with, Don Peterson, a lay minister, had been killed on the Pittsburgh plane. I think I value even more each day and our country....it is impossible to believe that Al Quaeda could set out to murder us but they did. I cannot imagine why Bin Ladin didn't help his own people but I guess hate motivated him more than love. I was mostly always patriotic but am much more so now...I did not lose anyone but my friend from childhood Don Peterson but I grieve for those who lost so many more. That many of us were murdered by an irrational force called Al Quada...that we need to be vigilant against such extreme muslim sects and other groups..that we need to strengthen our democracy ...for instance through everyone voting at election days. We need to teach more history in our schools. We need to remember how fragile democracy is and how we need to protect it...look how many foreigners want to come to our country....the reason is we are free, but free to not exercise our responsibility as well (viz. to vote)... As usual I found myself to be a somewhat lifeless zombie that morning as I went to school... more so than usual for the night before I blew out 15 candles on my cake in celebration of my birthday. First hour was usual and I was actually excited to head off to Science with my teacher Mr. Christopherson. I can still remember everything about those few moments that changed histroy so very well. About mid hour, our principal took our teacher out of the classroom. As soon as he entered back into the class, we I could tell that something was out of place. In a sullun voice he explained to us what he had been told; that the WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWER 1 had become a victim of terrorist acts and that we, America, were under attack. I couldn't handle it, at first I thought it was some type of emergency testing drill. He then turned on the television and more dtails began to flood us as we all watched in utter shock as WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWER 2 was hit. Misty tears began to cloud my vision and I wanted to desperately crawl into a corner and disappear. The people next to me tried to say that "this doesn't affect us at all." My life has dramatically changed in some ways and very little in others. I keep myself more informed and I have stopped being the nieve girl I once was; the girl that thought war was something that went on in lands far, far away and that America was too strong to ever even be challenged. Now I know just how much hatred is in the world. Security is by far more precatious because of this one major incident and that has an affect on all of us. (A fork can be considered a weapon.) Evil, suspicious looks haunt me everywhere. In some ways, I am thankful for the destruction I saw and the realizations that I came to, because I now support America more then I ever did before. When i put my hand over my heart I do it with pride and respect now more then before. I take in my country and love her with all of my heart. Buildings can be reconstructed on solid ground again, planes can be rebuilt and city sidewalks can be swept clean of the debris from 9/1, but the human lives that were took that day may not be as easily rebuilt or swept away. People are more precious then any foundation. I beleive that not only the people who died in the Towers should be remembered, but also those in the planes, who unwillingly had to take part in the terrorism of their Nation, and the countless people who died trying to save their fellow country-men from further injury. My programme was interrupted by a crazy message. the world tradecenter and the houses of congress have been flattened. and the white house is under attack. this was laughable. i engaged CNN, bursting into the falling tower right on. only one tower. only one plane, the french capture. immediately i contacted the white house expressing my sympathy. then my sons. then Bill Clinton. I knew this was WW III. Pearl harbour. I mailed the White hHuse: Flattening Kabul and Baghdad will not resurrect your Towers, Killing zillions will not bring back your loved ones. I have not received any reply. Yours is a great initiative. We used to love America so much. Kerry will regain us, bring us back into the fold. God bless. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. When I first witnessed it I was in school. I had just got into third period. It was very upsetting to see all the people jumping out of the windows from so high up. When you saw people jumping out of the windows you knew it had to be really bad up there. It was a shock to me because I thought I would never be alive to witness something like this. Our teacher was in tears and the class was in shocked. It was very sad to see the fire from the first plane hitting the North World Trade Center but when you see a second plane hit the South World Trade Center it is the worst thing I could think of. I feel for the people who did loose people in either the World Trade Centers, the planes that crashed, and for the people who lost someone in the Pentagon. I'm very sorry this had to happen I wish it would have never happened but it made are country stronger and closer together. Of course the World Centers should be remembered they were the most important structure next to the Statue of Liberty in New York. On September 11th I didnt hang one, but I put 2 pictures in the back of my mom's car window. Also I hung 2 in my bedroom windows. There was one in my sister's window. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at school when I heard about the attacks. Soon after the news broke I went to history class and our teacher allowed us to go on the internet to find out what was happening and the extent of the destruction that had occurred. We were one of the only classes that knew what horror was actually happening and couldn't even expalain to my friends the horror that we saw, they could not comprehend. The next few hours were very surreal. It seemed like I was living in a movie.It was a beautiful day outside but one of the most devastating days in U.S. history . Thankfully all my family was safe but I knew a lot of people who worked at the pentagon and were affected. That evening because I live in northern Virginia I actually saw afir force one fly over head. I knew it had to be it because all other air transportation had been ceased. ALso because of the proximity of where I live in relation to the pentago we did not go to schol the next day which was good for those affected but it really made you stay and and think about what had just happened. My life was not directly affected by Sept. 11 but it made me realize how vunerable we are as a country. As a world power and a land of freedom many other nations resent us and see us as a target. I think our country's perseverance and the way we all banded together should be remembered. Even though we are counrty filled with many different people and cultures, we banded together to help each other through the difficult times and as a result out nation remained strong. Yes, I did fly a flag after the events. I think the American flag isn't taken for granted anymore, but it is sad that it took such tragic events to make us appreciate what we stand for, freedom and liberty. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. When I witnessed The September 11th attacks at first I really didn't know what was going on. It was just another normal tuesday and I was at school in class and was just about to break for lunch. I remember the bell rang and the class began to leave the room and the teacher stopped all of us. He had been given a note by an administrator. I remember him deading it to us saying "a plane has crashed into the world trade center buildings in new york". I figured it was just an accident, a pilot had chrashed or something. And to tell you the truh, at the time I didn't even really know what the world trade center was, I had heard of the towers but I didn't know how big they were and how many people were inside them. So I just went on to lunch and really didn't think anything about it until I got home. I got relaxed, layed on the couch, and flipped on the tv... Then I immidiately shot back up from the couch, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. A plane crashing into this massive building that at the time was still standing. Then I began wondering how it happened. I also heard about the pentagon, so I knew it couldn't have been an accident then. When it turned out to be terrorists I had 2 feelings, great anger, and great confusion. The anger feeling is pretty obvious but i was confused because I just don't see how anyone could be so heartless to kill so many people. So that day will stick in my mind for the rest of my life, I remember every detail like it was yesterday. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed since the Septemeber 11th attacks. For one, I feel somewhat scared that this kind of thing could happen again. Another way my life has changed is security everywhere I go. My family and I went on a vacation and even I, a 14 year old kid, was patted down in the airport, but I guess at the same time I'm glad and once I got on that plane I thought to myself there is no way anybody was getting anything on that plane. Knowing all the metal detectors, x-ray machines and everything else I went through. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think what should be remembered about September 11th is that to those people on the planes, and in the building is it was just any other day to them going to work or going on vacation. I flew the flag after September 11th, which I had one flying before that but I replaced it because it was dirty and faded. I wanted to see those colors bright and strong. IT was on the TV all day and it got me thinking. Why are the media only telling me one side of the story. I know that its a bad thing and the Terrorist deffinatly shouldnt have done what they did but does that give us the right to be so judgemental and just hate all the Afganistaninas and go to war. Because when you thing about there's no way they would have just done this for no reason they must of been planning it for years and the Americans must have done something to build up the anger in these people enuf to make them want to take there own lives to Attack the Americans. On September 11th my sophomore english class was in our school lbrary researching topics in order to write a paper. There is always a small television in the librarian's office tuned to CNN or some other news network. One of my classmates went into her office to ask her a question and saw what was happening. Soon there were 26 people jammed into a tiny office just watching the television in horror. We then saw the second plane hit the towers. We also saw the Pentagon with the smoke billowing out. Stunned silence overcame the room as Tower 1 and Tower 2 collapsed. For the rest of the day our entire class watched bits and pieces of the news hoping to understand why. My life perspective was given a complete turn around. I had been focused on what was best for me, now I want to help. I turned on the T.V. as soon as I got there.I seen the second plane crash and they were talking about the Pentagon. After ariving in the room my teacher came in and turned on the television. As everyone sat in their seats the tv flickered,and everyones eyes were firmly focused on the screen. Life is precious and should be protected. I just thought about all of those people and how painfully most of them died. Their burning flesh making the air foul with the stench of death. These memories plague my mind and show what accually happened even though we wish it could be otherwise. The Earth is vast but we make an aragent asumption that we are the center of the world. I think that the people who lost their lives in unfairness and purpose should be remembered. So many people died, think of how many people were working in those two towers. Plus people lost their lives tring to help others. Many firemen tried to save people. We should also remember 9/11 as a day of our vulnerablity. The most tragic day we many lives were taken. It shocked me very much and made think of my friends that have someone close to them in the building. My friend, who is a pilot, woke my wife with a phone call shortly after the first plane hit the Towers. She woke me up and we turned on the television to see the burning building. Shortly after watching the devastation of the first crash, we both witnessed, as did the whole country, the second plane crashing into the second building. It was unreal. We couldn't believe what was happening. We prayed for those people right then and there.....Later that day, i went over to my church and joined a prayer group/session that was being held for those affected by the Sept. 11th tradegy. It was unbelievable. The images caught on tape will forever be etched in our minds. It reminds me of how much our fallen world needs the love of Jesus Christ in their lives. God's will, grace, and love; relationships; and friends and family are so much more important than making a lot of money and obtaining material items. I think many people, including us, needed to be reminded of that. It makes me sad that it took an act like this to make us realize this, but i am glad that we have now focused on the more important things in life. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was waken by my dad when it happened. I saw it on the news. I was really scared for the people who were in the planes and in the bulidings. Though I don't think I really understood it. It took me a while to realize how many people had been hurt or killed. It was scary how many people were affected by this nightmare. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I didn't know anyone who was hurt or killed. I knew friends who they knew people but I didn't really know anyone. It was very sad for those people. The only pain I felt was for the people I didn't know. It was still a horrible tragity though and I'm very sorry for the people that were affected by it. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The fireman and the other people who helped to save the survivors. They risked their lives for other people and that is very brave. We need to remember all the innocent people in the planes and in the buildings. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? My family and I flew and American flag outside of our home. I feel more respectful to the American flag because it represents everyone who was affected by all the tragitys in the USA and all the people who are helping our country surive.
