We all went on with class. then he came on again and said that the other tower has been hit. we got out of choir and went to social studies and spent the whole hour watching it on tv. For me, the events of September 11th unfolded as I watched the news late into the night. I remember feeling angry, helpless and dreadfully anxious. Anxious for it to end, and about how many tragedies would occur before it did. The next day was busy. Busy as the US military around the world heightened its readiness, secured its bases and prepared for whatever would come next. The most poignant memory of that day, while I was still trying to make sense of what happened and what might still happen, was when my friend - a Republic of Korea Lieutenant Colonel on the combined staff - asked me, "What can Korea do to help?" I'm angry with anyone that says that America incited the events of September 11th or in some way deserved it. But do not incite murderers (not martyrs) to kill our innocent civilians overseas or within our borders. And if you do, do not complain when we respond within your borders. I'm angry that we did not respond sooner and more forcefully - after the bombings in Saudi Arabia, after the bombings in Africa or after the bombing of the USS Cole. Attacks on Americans overseas herald attacks on Americans within our borders. Remember who are friends are, those that stood with us personally and internationally, not just on September 11th, but through the year and today. Remember those who suffered in the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon as they suffocated, burned and fell. Remember the brave men and women who ran into harm's way to help others in those buildings and the heroes on Flight 93 that fought back. Now not just the blood of America's military stain those red strips, but thousands of innocent civilians have died for no more reason than they worked, lived and loved in a country that others have pointed to as being the source of all the evils in the world. I reject that, the world would be much worse without America's leadership, contribution and charity. Many of the people pointing fingers at America are the ones inflicting pain and suffering on their people. I'm no longer as tolerant of this hypocrisy. We are thousands of miles away from where the WTC stood, but the impact of that day still haunts our family. We, like millions of others, were totally devastated that September morning. Watching on TV, one tower, burning and not knowing what happened and then all of a sudden, the second plane crashes into the second building. It was so unbelievable...a sight that just took your breathe away and leaves you standing there in a state of total disbelief. Luckily, there were great people of courage, that were able to help get people out of those buildings. Those regular everyday people, the firefighters and the police officers are the everyday heroes of our country. That's what makes it the great nation it is...people of courage. My mother broke down in tears and I began to cry knowing that innocent lives were lost for no reasonible cause. I went to school and we watched the news most of the day. It was even my first detention ever so I spent the rest of the day in class watching the news as my detention. Lives should never be taken for such actions, especially the lives of innocent people working hard to serve their country. Since I was a little kid I wanted to join the Marines and serve my country as a proud soldier. These events caused me to love my country more than I ever had. I now enjoy remebering events such as these and spend time remembering the lives of the many that were lost. The entire military is such a strong force and to be part of such a strong force should be a great feeling to anyone in it. I now have looked even deeper into the Marines and decided that it was the lead option in life. The military should be looked at as a lead in our country and any public worker that served in the 9/11 fight and those that have served in the war will always be remembered by me and should be by everyone else. Everyone should remember that the people that died did not do anything to encourage the terrorists to attack and kill them. They were all just innocent people living the everyday lives. The other most important thing that should be remembered is the fact that men gave their lives to try and save the lives of others. I had always flown an American flag whenever I had the chance, but after September 11th I put more effort into making sure my flag was flown in front of my house and to make sure I took the flag down before it became dark. To me it is a disgrace to leave the flag up in the dark because the true bright colors and love that is in the flag cannot be seen in the dark and those feelings of love cannot be felt unless you can see the bright colors and think deep inside your heart. We have a small tv in the holding area that the patients can watch while they wait to go into surgery. Shortly after the last patient had left, one of the other nurses ran to the front desk and said that a plane had hit the WTC. I went to watch the tv myself and stood in horror as I watched the second plane hit the towers. My husband Paul had just moved from NYC in 6/01 so I knew that he would have friends affected by this. Both of our lives have changed. We take nothing for granted anymore. There is not a day that goes by that we don't let our loved ones and each other know how much they are loved. I was away when the attacks happened.One of the staff let us watch it on TV.Whats scary is my dad was able to watch them being built and saw them coming down as well.Almost all of my family friends and relatives work and live by the city.My dad looked at the twins everyday.My friends had relatives that worked at the pentagon. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was on Holiday in New York City with my parents. They had arrived from Australia 2 days earlier. It was supposed to have been the holiday of a lifetime for both of them, especially my father who had wanted to see the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium for at least as long as I can remember. When we woke up on that Tuesday morning, we were so excited because we were going to have a full day of sight seeing before going to see the Yankees that night. We went to breakfast. It was a beautiful day. We walked out from breakfast at 8.45am and were on our way to the Subway to head down town to see the world famous Twin Towers. It was then we were told that a plane had crashed into the side of a building. At that point, we had no idea which building. Someone had pulled over to the side of the road on Broadway and had their radio on which was the first point we realised it was one of the towers. We looked downtown and just saw black smoke billowing skywards. There was no way it could be real. It had to have been an accident. We went into Macy's to see if there was any more information.....then it happened. The second tower. Everyone around us at that point in time just stopped and looked at each other. We were under attack and had no idea what the hell was happening. Myself and my parents decided we would be better off getting out of everyone's way and going back to our hotel. When we walked out back onto Broadway, the single most sorowful sight I am every likely to witness was in front of me. 100's of people crying, trying to call loved ones on cell phones, pay phones. We went back to the hotel and turned on the television. We had the window open and I had to close it when i realised that what I could smell was burning buildings. We watched on television as the first tower came down......and I could hear the rumble outside. It was the most sureal and terrifying moment of my short life......and then the second tower came down. We had no idea what to do. We stayed in the hotel for a few hours, pretty much speachless and glued to the television. We eventually went outside and the streets were desserted. Everything was closed. The only noise came from the emergency vehicles flying down Broadway toward Ground Zero. The next day, we awoke again to another beautiful day, yet the world was a completely different place. There was a huge sense of unease because personally, I still didn't know what was going to happen next. That night, we had just walked around for a while, when we came across the fire house on W31st street. What I saw, changed my life. Fire trucks that were covered in soot and ash, with pictures of fallen firefighters and flowers all over it. The top of the truck was almost caved in. How they got it back there I'll never know. Then on the side of the street, a lone fireman was sitting, just staring at the sidewalk. I could not even begin to fathom what he had seen or encountered at Ground Zero. We walked back to our hotel after we had dinner and a a few drinks. I went to go to a store on 5th avenue with my mum when we saw that they had the Empire State Building area taped off. Our hotel was right by it. They said it was just a precautionary method because it was an obvious target. We went back to the hotel and decided to err on the side of caution. We packed a few essential things like wallets, a change of clothes and passports. We didn't expect anything to happen but we thought it better to be prepared. That night, I had so much trouble getting to sleep. I was terrified. It turns out, I had every reason to be scared. Not 5 minutes after thinking this, the emergency system in our hotel was sounded and we had to evacuate the building immediately. I have never changed clothes so fast in my life! We were on the top floor of our hotel and, even though it was only 9 stories, the staircase was spiralled so it was very difficult to know exactly what floor we were on. At one point, I lost sight of both my parents. I was screaming out to them and they were telling me to keep going but there was no way I was leaving without them. People kept streaming by me but it seemed like forever before I saw my parents again. When we got to the foyer, we all poured out onto the street, where there were police officers and firefighters telling us to keep running and head downtown. We had heard that there was a package in the Empire State Building. At the time we were running down the stairs, all I could think about was those people trying to escape out of the towers. They had no idea what was about to happen and unfortunately, I got a taste of that. We were lucky though. The Empire State Building didn't blow up. It was a false alarm. Standing out on the street, I thought I could smell something burning nearby. What I was smelling was the World Trade Centre. The wind had changed direction and was blowing the smoke uptown. That is the one thing that is so unbelievably difficult to get out of my senses. My parents never did get to see that baseball game. It didn't matter. Nothing else mattered. But when they got on their flight 4 days after the attacks, I was so scared. They were flying to Vancouver and I didn't rest until they called me to tell me they were ok. I was still in New York because unlike my parents, I couldn't get on my flight home for a week. What I saw and experienced during that week will stay with me forever. The amazing generosity of the people in New York touched me. I had people be so kind to me. I was a foreigner and alone at that point. They took me in and looked after me. I remember the day before I was due to fly back home. I hadn't really eaten for about 2 days because the thought of eating just made me want to be sick. Needless to say, I was a little confused. I found myself back at that firehouse on W31st street. I asked one of the firemen who I could give money to. I couldn't give blood or anything like that so giving money was my only option. It was then that I just broke down in tears. These 2 firemen just hugged me, got me a drink and took me into their station. They asked me how long it had been since I'd eaten and then they proceeded to bring out a mountain of food that had been given to them. I remember I felt like such an idiot and a burden. Here were these amazing men, who'd been witness to the most horrific of circumstances and lost some of their own brothers in the attacks, yet, they were talking to me, asking me about where I came from what I did for a living etc....and they still had a sense of humour! I told them how stupid I felt and that they had bigger things to be worried about than some tourist who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They told me the only stupid thing about it was me thinking it was stupid! I arrived home with mixed emotions. It was like re-entering a completely different universe. I've been back to New York since then. I lived in the US for 6 months and went back to New York on several occassions. That is a city with amazing guts and courage and conviction. They will not lie down. The world can learn a thing or two from New Yorkers. I read somewhere that a New Yorker had made the comment "We're New Yorkers. We don't know how to be victims". I can't think of a better way to put it. I love you New York. You've changed my life forever and there will always be part of me with you. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. In more ways than I can express. When you get a sense of your own mortality, your life has to change. I appreciate more things now. I'm so driven to be good and I feel that I owe it not only to myself, but to the world to be the best I can be. I'm more motivated than ever with my studies and I do volunteer work with 2 different organisations. I still have a profound sense of sadness about the events of that day and I don't think that will ever be something far from my mind. But, I truly believe that the way for us to honour those who died, is to continue living, laughing and loving. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The enormous power of the human spirit and the ability of people from all of the world to join together and stand up and say we will not be beaten. We will continue to fight for what is good in this world. Every person has something to contribute and we need to make sure that every person has the freedom and the right to stand up and be heard. Killing innocent lives to make a point is just plain murder and civilised people will not stand for it. I saw first hand the power of people and the generosity of people to lend a hand to those they don't know and to show comfort, compassion and support. New York was the most inspirational of cities. I'm an Australian but yes, I did fly the American Flag, along with the Australian flag after 9/11. Since the events in Bali on 10/12, I've flown the Australian flag even higher. I was inspiried by the patriotism of the American people and the pride you have in your flag. Australians as a nation unfortunately learned the same value of our flag in our time of crisis. We don't have the same sense of country as Americans but I hope that from tragic events, we will begin to understand and appreciate what it means to be Australian and to be proud of who we are. To get to the office, I had to drive underneath one of the runways... What I remember the most, and what I will never forget, is...on my way to work that morning, as I approached the runway overpass, I looked up and to the right. Up in this perfectly clear, blue sky, were about 10 large airplanes, lined up one right after the other in the air, waiting their turn to land as soon as possible. As far as the eye could see there were planes lined up. That's when I realized the world had changed forever. Life would never be the same. I remember waking up and coming down the stairs to see my mom in the kitchen watching the TV wiht tears in her eyes.She told me what was going on and I didnt really understand since I really didnt know where the Trade Centers were or why a plane crash could make such an impact. I then saw the Plane routes and realized that it was a terrorist attack and people were trapped and would never get out.It was so devastating watching the people tell their stories of last good byes and the fire fighters who were heors dying for their country and its people.The next day I was sittin gin my History class when my teacher brought out an article and read it to us. It was honest,pure, and thoughtful we all felt the pain and the things that were going on in everyones heads. By the time my teacher was done the whole class was sitting silently crying. I think in a way its changed every American life even if people dont want to admit it or the dont even realize how much that day meant to everyone.i know its changed my life in alot of ways i worry more about people and where they are going or whether I will get to see them again.I also now always have some thought in my mind about war or terrorists and know there is no cure and nothing that can be done about it. I think the people who were effected,the fire fighters who died and risked their lives. and also the good that came out of this even it brought america together through heart and mind. When I woke up on September 11, I didn't plan on witnessing history, I planned on going to another boring day of school. That day turned out to be the most tragic day of my life. I was walking from my third period class to my fourth period class. I walked into the room hearing rumors about the trade center being blown up. I didn't believe it, nobody ever thought something like that would ever happen in the U.S., but it did. I stood open-mouthed as rumors became reality and I had seen replays of the planes crashing into the first tower. Soon after that, the t.v. was turned off and it was back to class. I now look into the sky whenever I see or hear a plane passing overhead and pray that nothing goes wrong. My views of foreigners have also changed. Before I didn't really have a problem with anyone from the Middle-East, but now I think that even though most of them didn't do anything, they're all at fault because of something a few people did. I can't even watch the news anymore because I get mad when I see those people running around with car bombs and all that thinking to myself that they should pay. We shouldnt reflect on all the bad that happened, we should really think about how that one event changed the way Americans live and the diversity that was among us is now gone. During the time when the event fisrt started, I was in my Language Arts class. We were studying a few vocabulary words, and ironically we were defining the word "heinous" as the first plane crashed into the tower. I remember thinking that this could never happen, but it was. It was very hard to grasp the fact that I was living in an important piece of history. I remember going on throughout the day with ample information of the event. The principle told the teachers not to give a lot of the facts out because they were scared that maybe a student would freak out. My uncle works in New York City, about 2 blocks away from Ground Zero. I was so scared that he might have gone through the subway or the train that lead to the World trade Center. Luckily, he drove that day, and he was stopped at the bridge as he heard about the horrific happenings. As I got home, I remember walking up the stairs, hearing the frantic news reporters giving the information about the event. So all I really did was pray that night, for all the victims, heroes, and overall, America. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, in my life, I've never seen anything so horrible. It definetely changed my life because now our nation has been changed forever in way that no one thought it would be. It's sad because just shows how it has to take a tragic event like this to bring our nation closer. I believe that now, whenever we look up at a low flying plane, we will automatically remember the events that happened on that fateful day. I was getting ready for bed, I live in NSW Australia, and my mother called out from her bedroom to me saying there was a plain crash near where my cousin Brad lived, like a block away. He usually goes into the towers about that time to chat to his friend. Most of them were killed that day. If he hadn't of stayed in bed he too would have been in the towers and would have died. My mother and I watched in horror as the second tower was hit, i couldnt believe it. Then the tower collapsed, my mother didnt even notice, i just kept saying, the tower is gone, it is just gone, she thought i was making it up, i said it collapsed,its gone, i hoped Brad is okay. I didnt know where he was at that time. Then the person on the tv said it, and my mother believed me. The tower HAD collapsed. I was so scared that Brad had been killed, my uncle (my fathers brother and brads father)lives just a few doors up from us, but was out of town, so we rang him to make sure he was alright. They had been watching it to and had called Brad. They were very lucky to get through. Brad didnt even know about it, he was asleep, and was told to put the TV on. he did and he too was hit by the terror and shock that now had hold of the whole world. Live each as though it is your last cause you never know what the next day holds. Keep smiling no matter what has happened because your smile can help someone else who is hurting through their pain, and never lose sight of those you love and remember that no mater what happens, no one is ever gone, they are still with us. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? Many people were needlessly murdered that day, and the heartache that has been left behind is unthinkable to most. It should never have happened, but it is not the Americans fault. The cowards who did it should pay. The courage of the people who were trying to help those trapped in the towers should never be forgotten. Their courage is that which saves lives and makes us feel safe in our communities. Their lives were well spent and it is a terrable loss having them being taken from the world. The lives of the workers in the towers and passangers and workers at the pentagon should also be remembered forever. Their lives were stolen from them by cold and inhuman things, there is no other way to describe them. These victims will be shorly missed. But the most important thing to be remembered is the way that everyone pulled together to help each other. To comfort and protect. I was sitting in my math class, in Miami, playing cards when my friend received a phone call from his aunt in Trinidad. She told him what happened and he told us. We didn't take it that serious until we changed classes, and i went into Government and they had the T.V. on. I came in just in time to see the second plane hit. From then on we were glued to the television. I watched as the towers went down and as people ran for safety. I couldn't help myself, i began crying and i couldn't stop. Lunch time was silent around the school, and driving home from school was worse. The radio stations were silent, only playing news, the road had an irie silence to it. No horns, no braking, nothing. The next day we had a school wide prayer in the gym for the lives that were lost and those affected. Since i'm west indian, my features resemble those who are responsible for September 11th. As i walked into the gym, eyes started staring. People were making comments such as "why is she here, she isnt christian," "why is SHE crying, she doens't believe in God." I realized that they way people look at me was about to change. My friends whom have known me for so long, changed around me. In October, FLorida Highway Patrol pulled me over because i was "supposedly" speeding. They were to white officers. One of the officers looked at me and said "i'm going to give you a ticket for anything i can find on you." They gave me a ticket for going 96, when my car only goes to 80. He gave me a ticket for tints that he said were illegal. He made me open my eye and take out my contact to prove to him i was wearing corrective lenses. My father kept us in the house for weeks after the attack, because of all the hate crimes that were being committed. Even though we're hindu, the average person doesn't know the difference and they don't care to educated themselves, so we were at danger. I think all the people who didn't think twice about their life being in danger, and did something to help should be remembered. Even those who were hundreds of miles away, they still donated, and collected stuffed animals for the children. The way AMERICA came together to help those in need should be remembered. Yes i do fly an american flag, and yes my feelings have changed. I have never seen a nation pull together like i did after the events of September 11th. I live in the Washington, DC area so I boared the Metro train to go to work. I heard nothing from anyone on the train and went to my office with no knowledge. I got to my office and checked voicemail and got a message from my boss telling me to check the security measures for our building, etc. Well, I still had no idea what was going on. So then I get a call from a colleage and they tell me I have to come and watch the TV. I get to the TV just as the first tower fell...I didnt want to believe it. As the chaos insued, I then hear that the Pentagon go hit, and then I knew it was for real...that we were under attack. Of all the things that have happened in my short 24 years on this earth, this was the first time I felt terrified for my life. The worst feeling though was hearing my mom leaving messages on my cell phone, in tears, because she is worried about me and I couldnt call her because the lines were totally jammed up. I felt helpless, vulnerable and frightened. I never want to feel like that again. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I dont know if my life has changed so much as my views have changed. I think that the U.S., known for its "melting pot" ideas, maybe needs to re-think who we let in to this country. We have issues within that we need to deal with and we just keep letting more people in. Also, its apparent that the Middle-east wants nothing to do with us and maybe we should just take our oil and go home. Dont get me wrong, I love this country and what it stands for...but maybe this should serve as a lesson on how the Middle-East views us. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think what should be remembered is how everyone came together that day, and the days to come. As I said earlier, I ride the metro and normally no one says a word to each other. That day, there was no race, there was no silence. Everyone was talking to each other and there was a closeness that I think should not only come about due to a tragedy such as this. I just entered my second hour class, when everyone was saying, "Have you heard? A plane ran into the twin towers, and into the pentagon! And while we were watching, another plane ran into the other tower!" The teacher turned on the classroom tv, and we all watched the second tower fall first, and then later, the first tower fall second. It was totally devastating. Nobody knew what was causing it. Everyone thought it was Iraq bombing us or starting a war. No one thought about Usama Bin Laden. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I personally didn't know anyone that died. My life hasn't drasticly changed or anything due to 9/11, but it has had a slight effect on my awairness to terrorists. I think the victims need to be remembered, and it should definately be remembered how everyone around the country, and around the world came to help in some way. No, I didn't personally, but yes, my feelings have gotten stronger, I can't say that they have changed, because I think I have always been proud to be an American, it's just that all this makes you realize it.
