NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I remember September 11, 2001 very well. My sisters' words still ring in my ears. "Sis, we are officially under attack..." was the message that came through loud and clear from the receiver in my hand as I watched the horrific footage that bore witness to that fateful morning. Such anguish, sorrow and suffering. Uncertainty and heroism filled the air as I watched the movement around me ... both in media and in the flesh. How surreal it all seemed. I have survived hurricanes, storms, flood damage, having children, divorces, loved ones passing on and the ravages of life ... and now ... this thing has touched me forever. I have never witnessed needless death on such a scale before. So many lives lost. So many families changed overnight. I remember thinking in the midst of it all that my brother would soon be called into action and my concern for him became very real. I felt so hurt by what I had seen ... holding my breath hoping that they would find more survivors ... but mostly I felt the loss of those families. My heart hurt for them so much. How many kisses and hugs not shared that morning. Never to be shared again. Dreams lost in the dust. Little league games never to be enjoyed. Grandchildren never to be born. Memories lost. So many things that "would get done later" wouldn't get done ever. So sad. Too many questions. My own "to do" list seemed so petty now. And I see this man responsible for it all ... smiling - happy - proud - and free. How can he be so happy? How does he sleep at night knowing what he has done? I pray to the heavens for those families and those souls that have been changed by his actions ... that they find peace somehow. I have always tried to live my life in such a way that "If it is something that will matter in 10 years, then it is worth addressing ... otherwise, there are more worthwhile things to focus on." When this happened, I changed that to "If I am alive to care about it in 10 years, then it is worth addressing ... otherwise, there are more worthwhile things to focus on." A year later, it just reads "I may not be here in 10 years ... so I focus on the little things." NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? September 11th taught us that every moment is important ... to cherish them. It also taught us we should think like children and act like adults ... we should forget our differences, find our similarities, play nicer together and be fair. Children are not born with an understanding of religion, color, race, gender, wealth, status, power or property - they respond with their heart and their needs are so simple. I felt like I was shocked for what happened to all those family's so quick and for all the people who where forced to make themselves jump to save themselves from the burning building. Yes, my life has changed beacuse of the towers and I feel terrible for those who never got the chance to say goodbye and I feel for the families beacuse they have been through a real hard time. As American expatriates living and working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the news came on CNN in the afternoon. The rumor flashed around the office that the World Trade Center had been attacked. We watched it on the TV in the Security Manager's office. Then we were told to close the buiolding and go home. When we got home, we heard that one building was already down. That had to be a mistake. It just couldn't be. Then the second one went down in front of our eyes and we knew it could really happen. From then on it was just a long period of soaking up all the news from television and feeling the world changing as we watched. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. We personally have experienced the increased security at airports when we travel out of the Kingdom. We have experienced bomb checks on our cars as enter the Office or Residential compounds. We set up and maintained an Emergency Operations Center in our compound to keep an eye on the news. We American exats have faced the angry inquiries of our Saudi hosts as they ask 'why is America attacking Islam?'. We've had to find the words to explain that America is attacking terrorists who are staining the name if Islam. Somehow it feels like we are all Ambassadors who have a small part in maintaining relationships with Arab countries. Of course we should not forget the fallen, the innocent victims occupying the planes and the buildings, and the innocent rescuers who died trying to save them. But these will eventually become an anonymous group like the victims of Pearl Harbor. It is just as important to remember how we felt that morning before the attack started. That will be the 'Good Old Days' for the current generation. I remember several periods of 'Good Old Days'. I remember life before polio vaccine. I remember life before plane hijackings began. I remember life before Kennedy's assassination. I remember life before our streets were flooded with drugs, before drive-by shootings, and before so many people felt so helpless and lost. Now I have another period of 'Good Old Days' to remember, a time when getting on a plane was only an exciting foretaste of a trip instead of a roll of the dice. I worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts inside the South Station building. A co-worker who was also a private pilot came out of the lunch room where there was a TV set. He was sort of pale and told me a plane had crashed into the WTC in NYC. A few of us went in and kept watching. Then the 2nd plane hit. We were aghast. Silence, then someone murmers, "That was no accident, not two planes, no way!" Later there was a report that there was a fire at the Pentagon, then word came that it had been struck by a hijacked plane. They said the planes had been hijacked out of Logan Airport across the harbor. Looking down at the lobby of busy South Station Terminal State Police were walking around. Our Executive Director ran in and told us that a State of Emergency had been declared and that we were all to go home. I took my things and got on the subway. Folks chatted on their cell phones and tried to gety information. A crowd gathered around a man with a portable radio. I got off the subway and quickly walked home. I am a natural news hound and watched CNN, MSNBC and Fox News, back and forth. Then the Trade Center Towers fell. At that time (it is hard to remember) we thought there were more planes in the air headed who knows where... then they said a plane had crashed in Shanksville Pennsylvania. I got out a map and saw it was right close to where my parents had grown up in Connellsville. The next day I stayed at home and watched TV some more. I had not gotten much sleep. We stayed up until maybe 2am. At 7am I was back in front of the TV set. It was when my fiancee left to get some lunch that I began to cry very hard for a long time. I wept hard and even yelled out in anger and disbelief, very unlike me. Sometimes I think we would have a less angry and healthier society if more people had scream therapy, like going to a concert or on a roller coaster and just screaming so all the things we have repressed are let out. I called my friends in NY to make sure they were OK. I had been to the top of the Trade Center when I was younger and remembered justy how tall they are up close and looking down from them. My father has a fear of heights. So that was it really, just stunned disbelief followed up by generalized unfocused anger and rage at the stupidity and amorality of such a thing. I found the cassette of Don Henley's song "In a New York Minute" and the lyrics made me cry all over again... "Harry got up, dressed all in black, went down to the station and he never came back, they found his clothing scattered somewhere down the track, and he won't be on Wall Street in the morning. everything can change in a New York minute..." NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, I decided to focus on the Heroes of Flight 93. It was a great story and when I listened to the theme music from the film "A Bridge Too Far" I cried because I realized what a suicide mission was. Troops, military or civilians in a moment's notice, do not know what is going to happen, they have no guarantee of success, just a hope. So I thought about what to do. I did reaserch on the Internet and found others who wanted to help in the project to build a memorial at the crash site in Shanksville PA. I sent an e-mail to a teacher who's students also wanted to help. I told her I wanted to visit the site on Sept. 11th 2002, one year later. She thought there might be others who want to drive as a group so I set up a forum for them to organize the trip. I found a person there who would help. A person I had seen at the first GM Nationans car show in Carlisle PA, a Camaro owner named Val McClatchey. It turns out she lives near Indian Lake and took the photo of the smoke rising up over the crash site she calls, "End of Serenity". When the time came I brought a video camera to help record and document the memorial service. We had tried to find a logical starting place. The airport in Newark Nj where Flight 93 had flown out of made sense. Then I found the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Basking Ridge NJ. That was where FLight 93 passenger and hero Richard Guadagno had worked. I called their Security person to see if we could use a parking lot the morning of the 10th to meet up before driving to PA. He was touched. He had known Richard and knew a good spot at a trail head where the other employees had made a tribute to Richard and the crew and the passengers on a wall. When we got there I video taped the scene and the wall with his picture on it. We drove out to PA and spent the evening in the lounge of the hotel in Somerset PA drinking and listening to a local live rock band. I wondered if Patriot's Day Eve would someday become a reason to celebrate the day before we all bow our heads in solemn rememberance, maybe a new tradition could be made and evolve. Maybe... so the next day we went to the crash site on the buses and saw the temporary memorial out near the crash site in a recovered coal stripmine. I had left my video camera at the hotel on purpose since I knew there would be plenty of news people shoving their cameras in the faces of the mourners. I brought my 35mm camera and took snapshots to help me remember. Witnessing is an interesting idea. I felt I had to go adn wotness the activity there one year later, to be there in person, drawn inexplicably, going out of the way to get the time off from work, to organize a group of ersatz "hot rodders". The next day we were on our way out of town and at the front desk of the hotel we found a flyer for the Shanksville Memorial Chapel. It was a little out of our way, but I felt the Heroes of Flight 93 warranted the extra attention. I am so glad we made the pilgrimage. We saw the car with New Jersey license plates out in the parking lot. We entered the chapel adn saw the Reverend speaking with an older couple who were soon joined by a younger couple. We walked around and saw the names of the crew and passengers on the wall. I went to sign the guestbook and saw the names above the empty space... it was the names of Richard Guadagno's parents! I looked at them. The young man caught my eye and I asked him if they were his parents and he said yes, and that he was the buyfriend of Richard's sister and they lived in Florida. I told him what a coincidence it was to see them since two days before we had started our trip from where he had worked at the wildlife refuge. He told his girlfriend who then told her parents. They approached us slowly. Richard's mothers spoke, "Who did you lose?" She thought we were one of the families of the victims! I explained to them that we were just plain folks who happened to have driven from Boston MA to witness the memorial service. They were touched. I told them how it was also sheer happenstance that we had picked the refuge to drive from, just thought it was a nice scenic place to begin our journey. I had to leave, in the parking lot the tears welled up and I cried like crazy. Got in the car adn could not drive, just held the steering wheel and cried for a few minutes. On the way to the Turnpike I got gas and again thought about Richard Guadagno, his parents and relatives and the crew and passengers and all of their relatives. It was a long quiet ride home. I was at my desk when one of my coworkers said that the WTC had been hit. We all figured it was an accident. Then we heard the second plane had attacked. We work in the internet support services, our link to the world stopped. I couldn't believe that this had caused our problem, which it didn't, but it addded to the confusion of the day. We didn't know if there had been more attacks closer to home, that were debilitating all the country's infrastructure or what. We spent the rest of the morning watching news reports on television. Later that day we needed to add some equipment at a remote location owned by Qwest. While we were in there we were asked to leave. So while we weren't in the midst of the terror attacks, the shocks were felt all across the great land of ours and today on the anniversary of this tragic event, our hearts are with our entire country! NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I woke up to sound of my telephone ringing on September 11th, 2001. My mother was on the other end yelling frantically about a plane that had crashed into the World Trade Center. Still in a daze from just waking up, I walked over to the television and turned it on. To my surprise and horror I watched as hundreds of Americans were fleeing down the streets that were usually filled with cars, trucks, and buses. These people were covered in soot as their tears streamed down their faces. Smoke hung above the city while down below firefighters, policemen, and emergency personnel passionately tried to save the lives of the American people. I hung my head in heartache. All the people that had been killed or hurt; all the children that had lost their parents; all the families who had lost loved ones. How could this have happened? I initially believed that it was a tragic mistake of the pilot who had been flying the plane that crashed into the north tower. And then the inconceivable happened. As the live footage continued of this horrendous incident, a second plane evaporated into the south tower. I literally couldn't believe my eyes. What was going on? This was not a mistake. This was somebody who was trying to hurt the United States. This was somebody who hated all of us, to say the least. And although I was living in Michigan at the time and had no family in New York or traveling in airplanes, I sat on my couch and cried. It was the worst event in history on American soil and certainly in my twenty one years of living. And the pain and suffering didn't end there. The Pentagon was attacked and another American icon was saved when another plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Why would anyone want to take the lives of so many people? Why would anyone want to destroy such a symbolic portrait of American life? NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed in many dramatic ways since September 11th, 2001. Since 1997, my senior year of high school, I had been chatting on the internet and talking on the telephone with a young man named Christopher. We began talking in November of 1997 as friends who shared similar interests. After his wife died of birthing complications on January 6th, 1998, which just so happens to be my birthday, we began talking more often and more in depth. He needed somebody to talk to and to understand him and that is exactly what I wanted to do for him. In the next four years, up to September 11th, 2001, we had met once for about a week and knew that we wanted to be together. But the timing wasn't right. I was going to college and he was raising his baby girl by himself with the help of some relatives. We kept in touch during the course of the years as friends but we both knew that we would some day be together. After September 11th came and went, we both realized that anything can happen to anybody at anytime and decided it was time to see each other again. We wanted to be sure that our love for each other still existed. It did. Two weeks after my visit to Virginia I packed all of my belongings and moved to be with him and Christina. I left my family and friends and even left right in the middle of my semester at school. We just couldn't bare the thought of living without each other anymore and we couldn't be happier! September 11th also has taught me to be more patient when it comes to relationships with people, to not get so angry when things don't go my way, and to be grateful for everyday that I am living. Everything that had to do with September 11th, 2001 should be remembered, but the people of 9/11 should be remembered the most. These include the people who were inside the buildings and inside the planes, the firefighters, the policemen, the emergency personnel, and the reporters and photographers, both who are still living and who died in the horrific catastrophe. Also the friends and family of all those who died should be remembered and preserved. And even the American people who came together to help those in need by donating blood, money, and time should be remembered. There were so many heroes who emerged from this tragedy; from the children whose parents were killed in the World Trade Centers to the men who took over United Flight 93 so another plane couldn't attack us again. After the attacks, businesses lowered their flags to half mast and posted sayings like, "God Bless America," and "United We Stand." The flag just represents exactly those sayings but without the words. Everytime I see the American flag now I am reminded of how united we were during those tough times and how united we could be all of the time. I am the Web Site Design Coordinator for our government web site. My work day begins at 7:00 A.M.. On September 11, 2001 I was at my desk working. A few other people had come to work early. I usually monitor the news as part of my job. That morning I had not turned the news on until about 8:30 A.M.. I was working and listening the the TV news on Fox News Channel when they interupted the regular program to tell everyone that a commercial jet aircraft had hit the World Trade Center. I spun around in my chair (the TV is behind me) shocked to hear the news. In the next few minutes they aired recorded footage of the first jet hitting and then live I witnessed the second jet hit the other tower and people falling or jumping to their deaths. I was completely overwhelmed with multiple emotional reactions. Saddness for those on the jets and those in the towers and those still living who lost loved ones. Anger at those who could be so decieved into thinking this was justified. Anger at those who would say that some kind of god could approve of this. Fear that it could happen anywhere, even the 12 story building I was working in. Love for the United States and what this country is supposed to stand for, which of late has been trampled by leaders and citizens with little moral decency. Thoughts came to me. Can this be the start of a new terrible future where the United States will become like Israel or Ireleand or Malaysia, where human life is cheap and terrorists freely kill and injure people? How will we respond. Will we fight back? Who will we fight? The enemy live among us. I worried for my 18 month-old son and my wife. How could I protect them from such terror? Then the third jet hit the Pentagon. Oh my God. My brother-in-law might be working in there. He has worked ther in the past and I never know where he is. I must call my sister to see if all is well. The fourth jet hits the ground in Pennsylvania. What is happening? This is not real. Who could plan such a horrible thing. Who could organize and brainwash enough people to make this hiddeous plan work? My sister is home. Thank God! Are you ok? Where is Wayne? Is he ok? Thankfully he is not working in the Pentagon today. My sister is full of fear and saddness. The news states that another plane may be approaching Washington D.C.. Oh no, my niece works for the Vice Pesident. What are they doing? I call to find that they have been evacuated and all is well. Everyone in my office is in shock. All work has stopped. Everyone trying to cope with the tragic events which are unfolding. One person has to be carried out of the building. She is histerical. Her brother was working in one of the World Trade Center towers. She refuses to be consoled. Crying, saddness, grief, pain... I thought, the only place to look for hope is in Jesus Christ. I finally stopped everything and started to pray. Jesus Christ is always there. He lives in every heart who trusts in His sacrifice for their personal sins. He died that we might live. His ressurection guarantees that all who believe in and follow Him will have eternal life. I prayed that all those who perished trusted in Jesus Christ, and that all those who lost loved ones would turn to Jesus Christ. Sin has birthed evil in this world. Jesus has provided forgiveness for sin. One day in the near future He will completely remove sin from all humanity. I want to be there when he does. Don't you? If you do, just pray to Jesus like this: Jesus, I confess that I have sinned against God and other people. Please forgive me for every sin I have ever committed. I also believe the God sent you Jesus, God's only begotten son, to die as a sacrifice for my sins. I believe you died for my sins on a cross over 2000 years ago. I believe you died and your body was buried in a tomb. I believe that God the Father raised you from the dead on the third day to prove that He accepted your sacrifice for my sins. I believe that you went back to heaven and are with God the Father right now. Please recieve me now into your family Jesus. I recieve you right now Jesus into my heart and life. When I first heard about the Twin Towers being attacked, iI was walking down the hallway of my school. One of my friends came up to me and tole me that there was an attack on america in Washington D.C. and New York City. When I got to the next class, we watched the news and I saw what complete chaos NYC had become. Also on the news I saw the Pentagon and one of its ruined sides. When I came home from school that day i called my friend and she was very upset because her mom's ex husband was the pilot of the airplane that crashed into the pentagon. Her half sister was being interviewed by news stations and her whole family was a wreck. i told her to come over and we just sat and watched the news for a little bit together,. I really didn't know what to say or do for her. the only thing I could do was to be with her. When I arrived, students, faculty and college employees were gathered around a big screen television in the fireside lounge. I joined them and we watched the ghastly events unfold together. An hour later, dazed, I made my way to the computer center to e-mail family and friends. My subject line: CAN YOU BELIEVE WHAT'S HAPPENING? My message, in essence, was that "one" of the towers had been hit by a plane and there were unconfirmed reports that the Pentagon had been hit. Classes were suspended and many of us left immediately. All I could think of was to go get my son and when I got home I phoned my husband at his work. After that I was "useless", crying in front of the TV all afternoon and evening. History will record this as yet another delicate age of innocence peeled away and lost forever. Because of the threat of terrorism it would be unlikely that I will ever fly on a commercial airplane, feel at ease in metropolitan settings or look at a piece of mail as innocuous again. PARANOID, you bet, inappropriately so - NOT IN THIS DAY AND AGE. I asked myself the question that was probably asked the last time Americans faced a loss of the thin sheathing of an innocent age, what kind of a future faces our children? I was up at 6:30 that morning, excited and nervous as my son was going to his first day of Preschool. I heard about the first plane hitting the Trade Center, shocked and disbeliefed I called my husband. He assured me that it just had to be an accident, why else would a plane hit. So disturbed to see the smoke billowing out of the building I turned off the tv. Later, I turned the tv back on, to confirm my husbands belief that this was just an accident, only to hear of a second plane hitting the other Tower, my ears burned and my heart ached when I heard of a third plane hitting the Pentagon and possibly a fourth hijacked plane up in the air somewhere. I immediately called my husband, he said "I know Babe, I know of the second plane." Tears filled my eyes when I told him of the Pentagon, shocked and disbeliefed he told his co-workers, all I could hear in the back ground were people saying "Oh, God, No". We hung up saying our "I love you's". I watched the tv in horror as the first tower collapsed. My sister called me then, hysterical and distraught. She could only hear through a radio what was happening, so I relayed the information I knew, she didn't know yet then of the first Tower collapsing. After we hung up completely numb and shocked, I continued to receive more phone calls from close friends, all crying, as was I. I phoned my husband and told him I just needed to hear his voice and even asked if he'd come home, even second guessing if we should send our then almost 4 year old to Preschool. Then the second Tower collapsed. My husband was disbeliefed as well, and again relayed the information to his co-workers that the second Tower just collapsed. All I heard was one person say "Oh NO, God, No", everybody else was silent. I live in Minnesota, and even though I was not personally impacted by these attacks, I want to let everybody in New York know that it hurt us as well. I wanted so badly to think of a way to help, so I wrote a Poem, it lifted my spirits a little. I hope it does the same for others. I truly believe, based on the story of my poem, that it was one of the new Angels from these attacks tapped me on the shoulder and encouraged me to write this... Angels Working Overtime We couldn't believe the hatred they had, the actions they took made the world so sad. They thought it would break the American Pride, little did they know, we hold it deep inside. Thinking of all who died made the world so blue, but rest assured, God gave them a job to do. They have new titles than they had with us, they are now called Angels, nothing less. They were Angels all along given to you as a gift, now they are everywhere, helping our Spirits lift. That early morning before the attack s my dad was flying to proge. i woke up that morning took a shower then turned on then turned on the radio to hear that two plans had crashed into the world trade centers and i didn't really know what was going on but then my mom came running up the stairs and had us get down on out hands and kness and pray. Gor a second i thought it was my dads plane and started freaking out. The whole day at school for me was just a blur of feeling nervous, scared and having my heart beating very heard every second. Just not that i was nervous and scared for myself, but for the whole world and for every one that was effected my this event. We were awaken by my moms scream. "Were being attacked. Girls get up! Were being attacked!" I thought she meant someone was in my house, I had no idea she meant our country!She immediatly turned on the TV and I sat in amazement as I watched the second plane hit. I was in awe! Later that day i got dressed to go pick up lunch. While driving to the store President Bush's voice came on the radio. I, along with the rest of Dacula's lunch hour traffic sat at a green light and listened. No horns were blown, no yelling or obscene guestures. Just stillness as we listened to President Bush declare war. At the drive through at Wendy's everyone was overly friendly, and when I got to the window there was a TV on and they were all crying. We live right next door to an airport, you hear planes constantly, but that night the sky was eery with silence and nothing but stars. Suddenly we heard airplanes above us. Then we did something we never imagined. We ran from the sound. We were petrified! Weren't all the airways shut down? We were freaking out until my dad finalyl called to tell us that it was our military! In Our little corner of the US, Dacula, GA we felt pain. I have learned to accomplish all you can and do all you can to the best of your ability because tomorrow your ability could be lost. Enjoy driving down your roads, sitting in traffic, and sayong whatever you want because oneday those freedoms may be taken. I have learned to always leave on a good note, dont put off tomorrow what you can do today. Basically Tomorrow isn't promised so enjoy today. It's a precious gift, that is why it is called the present. Many of been robbed of this gift that many take for granted! NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The way our nation joined hands. Noone was to proud to take a hand up. Noone argued. The sacrifices made by millions in the days following 9/11. Fire Fighters around the world, Policemen, construction workers,and common everyday people, rich and poor and the unity we shared. The tragedy we all survived and the tragedy we mourned over for those who didn't. We should remember the pride we felt for our men, our military, our women, our firefighters, our police, our flag, our freedom,and our Country! I searched for days, ashamed that I didn't already own such a precious treasure! Luckily a man was selling them on the side of the road and my boyfriend and I pulled over and bought four! When I see the flag I cry. Everytime I see a flag I get a feeling of pride and love and I remember. It brings tears to my eyes everytime. I didn't find out really until 8th hour. Then after school I went home and turned on the t.v and realized what was happening. After realizing it, I was shocked. Yes, I just think about it and realize everything that has been chnaged, and how peoples familys were tore apart. If it were one of mine I would have been heart broken. That people's lives were chagned because of this, and people were sacrificed for our country. Everyone should remember this day, as a day of tragety, not happieness. I think that it shouldn't be different because we should have always looked at our flag and realized that we were all a country and nation together. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I woke up late for class on 9/11. I was attending Warton County Junior College in Wharton, Texas and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I had 2 classes, one at 8 and one at 9:25. I overslept for the 8 o'clock class and when I finally did get up I didn't have time to stop and watch the t.v. in the dorm common room. I hurried to class and I remember passing a group of people talking about a plane crash in New York, but I didn't really listen because at the time I had no reason to care about what was going on in a state far away from me. When I finally got to class I was surprised to see my classmates and teacher standing in the hall listening to a radio coming from some teacher's office. At first I didn't listen to it because I was wondering what the hell was going on but someone said that a plane had just crashed into the Pentagon. In my stunned silence I finally heard the radio report explaining the crash of two planes into the twin towers in New York and the Pentagon. Finally, the teacher called us into class and asked if we would like the period off because, obviously, who can concentrate on speech class at a time like this? So I headed back to the dorm and watched the news for hours, and since I didn't have a job at the time, I could do that. I remember the news media at first showed footage of people jumping from the windows of the towers and falling 70-80 stories just to escape the fire. Thankfully, they stopped doing that around 11 or 12, I think. I do remember crying for all the people that had been in those planes and towers and the Pentagon. I was amazed at the pure evil it must have taken to kill innocent civilans just to prove some stupid point. I was, and still am, extremely angry that instead of fighting it out in some battlefield somewhere, these cowards murdered innocent people, thinking that would glorify them somehow. All those lives lost.... My friends and I wondered what would happen next, but we never believed those towers would collaspe. Not until it happened. Our biggest concern was whether someone was going to evacuate buildings in the Houston area, which is only about 45 minutes away from Wharton. The entire day was nothing but a series of shocks and heartache, one right after another. All I could think, finally, was "I hope we get the bastards that did this." The first few days after 9/11, the cafeteria and the library had t.v.'s broadcasting footage and news reports. The t.v.'s were taken back about 2 weeks after the incident but we talked about for months afterward. One of my friends said that he was going to make Osama bin Laden pay the ATM charges on his account because the attack had caused his paycheck to be late causing him to withdraw money that he needed but didn't have. Sometimes we could find humor in what had happened but only about anything that didn't have to do with the victims. I personally became more patriotic because I wanted to hunt down and exterminate every last terrorist that existed that had any part in this. I was proud of New York for coming together in the face of the attack, proud to show the world that the reason for attacking us, that we were a fat, godless nation intent on destruction, was groundless and that in fact we were strong and determined to rebuild while encouraging everyone to pray for our president, nation, and victims of the attack. And I was proud that President Bush, who is from Texas, was able to prove how competent he could be as our leader. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that as a nation we should remember that we asked for prayer and brought God back into our lives, even if it was only for a little while. I think we should remember that it was God who helped us get though the first hours, days, weeks, and so on after the attack. We should also remember that we can, and did, survive this and that we can draw together to help others. We should remember the heros that died trying to help, the victims caught in the crossfire of a supposedly "holy" war, and the men and women who fought bravely for our country to protect it from future attacks like 9/11. We should remember that no matter what happens to the soil of our country, America is not defined by borders or boundries but by what is in the heart of every person who considers themselves Americans. We should be proud to sing the Star Spangled Banner with our hands over our hearts and our hats off, to speak the Pledge of Alligence and mean it deep in our hearts and live up to it and carry it out in everything we as a nation do. Like the cry "Remember the Alamo" was for Texas and her freedom, let it be the same for 9/11 and America. And as an American, I offer up this prayer to God: Please, holy Father, let us not forget you or that day. Let us teach our children about America and your part in her creation. When I went to elementary school I never thought of the American flag as more than a piece of cloth that hung from the chalkboard that you stared at as you recited the Pledge of Alligence and listened to the Star Spangled Banner over the intercom. Sadly, not much was done to change this point of view as I grew older. After the attack, however, I began to look for things, like jewerly and clothing, that had the American flag on them because I wanted to show everyone I met that I supported my country. I became proud to wear it and grateful that my rights in this country allowed me the freedom to express how I felt. For me, the American flag has come to symbolize freedom and strength in the face of adversity and if I could that would probably be the one thing I would get tatooed on my body. I have become, if anything, more loyal to that flag and the country that it flies for. I could never ask for a better place to live. I can get an education that, being a woman, would be hard for me to obtain elsewhere. I can wear whatever I like and do whatever I like (within reason, of course) without fear of a male-dominated government executing me. And my daughters, when and if I have any, can eventually become President someday if they are determined enough. What more could I ask for? I WAS HAVING MY MORNING CUP OF COFFEE AND WATCHING THE TODAY SHOW IN THE KITCHEN, I LIVE IN WESTERLY RHODE ISLAND, JUST A SHORT TRIP INTO NYC. WHEN THE EVENTS UNFOLDED ON THE TV I DIDN'T WANT TO BE ALONE, SO I CALLED MY DEAREST FRIEND AND WE WATCHED TOGETHER HOLDING ONTO THE PHONE, HER HUSBAND SAID THE BUILDINGS WOULD NOT FALL, AND THAT MANY PEOPLE WOULD GET OUT, AND THEN THEY FELL, IT WAS ALMOST UNREAL & IN SLOW MOTION. AND THEN AS WE WERE TRYING TO COME TO GRIPS WITH WHAT WE WERE SEEING,THE PENTAGON & FLIGHT 93. I WAS SURE IT WOULD CONTINUE & THAT MANY MORE CITIES AND PEOPLE WOULD BE INVOLVED. I WORK IN A HOSPITAL & WENT IN LATER THAT AFTERNOON, EVERYONE WAS IN SHOCK & MECHANICALLY GOING ABOUT WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE FOR THE PATIENTS THAT WE HAD TO TAKE CARE OF. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I had a doctor appointment so I didn't go to work that day. I woke up to the images of the towers buring on TV. (When my husband left for work that morning, I had gone out to sleep on the couch with The Today Show on - I actually had quite a disturbing dream right before I woke up - later, it almost seemed like a premonition). I called my Mom first and then my husband, and they hadn't heard about it yet as the 2nd plane had just hit. I called my friend in NJ and woke her up. I called my friend who's boyfriend was going to school about 3 blocks from the towers and she hadn't heard from him yet. I was more worried than she was about him - she is much calmer than me. He was finally able to get through to her about 1pm our time. He had been near the towers when the first one fell, and he had been covered with the debris. I watched TV until I had to go to the doctor. After the doctor, I called my work and found out they were closing due to the fact that they were considered a terrorist target (The Mall of America). So I went back home and was glued to the TV for the rest of the night. I will never forget any part of that day. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Even though I didn't know anyone directly that passed away that day, it affected me deeply as if affected so many others. I did feel very connected with Flight 93. Tom Burnett, one of the passengers on that flight, went to my high school. Also - Mark Bingham, another passenger on that flight, was a very good friend of a guy that I graduated with. It really made me think about how close to home all of this was. I know that since that day, I have done my best to look out for others and to just try and be a nicer person.
