<text>I live in Miami, Florida. I had just returned home from carpooling children to school. As I came in, I poured a second cup of coffee, and turned on the television. I put on BBC because I had seen the local news earlier.
As I watched the screen, I couldn't believe what I was watching. The United States Pentagon was on fire.
I walked closer to the screen and was nothing short of shocked. I always believed that was the safest place on earth. Almost as if an invisable force field probably protected it.
Then I noticed the news showing one of the World Trade Center Towers on fire. And then they kept showing a plane flying into the side of it.
Suddenly I remembered a movie I saw many years ago called "Red Dawn" where the U.S. is invaded.
I could not believe what I was watching. Even though I lived so far away, I truely felt like I was being attacked. My community. My country.
I immediately made a call to one of my brothers which works at a top oil refinery to make sure he was alright. As he turned on his t.v. we both watched in horror as the second plane crashed into the other tower.
I then dropped the phone and ran out the house. I wanted my children home with me.
I was not the only parent that felt that way.
As we arrived back at our home, I returned to the t.v. and just then the first tower fell. I remember screaming so loud as if my voice could actually stop the building from coming down.</text>

<text>I am not so sheltered anymore. By this I mean I now know there is no invisable force field anywhere.
I took a flight with one of my children in October of 2001. I felt strong enough as did many other passengers, that if anyone tried to get in that cockpit door, well it wasn't going to happen. No one spoke this, it was just known.
I never knew much about the Middle East before this tragedy. I am now trying to understand. I have found I don't trust Middle Easteners as before. I don't know what they have under their cloths. I really stuggle with this inside myself because I am not a raciest but this is so raciest.
I also find myself defending God more. The God I understand and have faith in would never approve of such horrific actions.</text>

I saw how the second plane hit the other tower and you could see people running for there lives. And others were trying to get away from the horror by jumping out the windows. The streets looked like a whole sheet of snow just laid on the ground. After a few minutes the first tower was starting to shake. And all of a sudden a huge tower of ashes started covering everything in its way. Tan no longer than two minutes the second tower started falling. Every one was panicking. After wards there was news that over 5,000 people were dead. But some of the number kept getting bigger and smaller.</text>

              <text>
As my husband and I sat checking our email with our three month old something caught his eye and he went running to the TV. Yelling for my to follow I questioned him what was going on. "We're under attack!" is all he said. "Who's under attack" I said. "The US" was his response. As we turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit the towers. We sat in silence holding each other and our daughter. A few hours later the was one of the hardest moments of that day I sat in our bedroom watching my husband put on his uniform. He is an Officer in the United States Navy.
As he Left for work that day I sat eyes glued to the TV and crying for those all over the country that didn't know if there loved ones were ok.
Living on the Naval Weapons Station in South Carolina Everything was already closed. Barricades, watch booths, machine guns, car checks all being set up. With in two hours of my husband leaving I got a call from him he told my to get the baby ready because we were going into town to get food and supplies. Upon returning we had a two hour wait to get on base and once on base, we had two complete car checks. I had no problem with the wait or extra checks, it's the price I'm willing to pay for my FREEDOM and safety. A Few days later I discovered that The Weapons station was one of the top five targeted locations due to the Nuclear reactors on base, and yet under the circumstances I have never felt more safe in my life.
September 11, 2001 the day we all cried, the day we will NEVER forget.</text>

<text>The day started out in like regular business day at Cablevision. Just as soon as we began there was an interruption where a person came in and asked if anyone has someone near the world trade center- (yeah I thought , my dads' office is around the corner literally) on Wall St. Then the tell us whats happened so the giant screen tvs are put on and we see the tower on fire like it is right in front of us. Then what felt like 5 seconds the second plane hits --The first flash in my head is to call my dad, of course the lines are out-- then I knew immediately the next call was to the closest militay base as I am an inactive reservist- but quickly became active again and so I prepared to go down to what would be known as ground zero. I quickly told my family which brought them to tears but someone has got to go especially for my Dad and all the other Dads' and Mothers otu there. I dust off my uniform, go and buy new boots in 30 seconds and off to the base where I am loaded up with a weapons, ammunition, search and rescue gear and full surgical kit. And off I went for the next 3 days doing search and rescue, going thru what felt like an unrealistic movie set by George Lucas or something. Climbing, going thru caves of debris, actually finding an entrance to lower levels in the mall and subway. It this couldn't be real I kept telling myself. This Mall was beautiful, expensive, just last year I met my Dad here to go to lunch?? this can't be the same place Its' demolished destroyed. And so went the rest of my week there trying to grasp the whole situation but also trying my damnedest to find someone , there is someone here that is waiting for me wehre are you speak to me make a noise but nothing came not even a whisper only the sound of falling debris and burning fires and the voices of other rescures begging pleading to find life someones brother, daughter, father mother,Fiancee, husband anyone........I did find my Dad ok Thank god. </text>

We went into the den and turned the tv on and began watching what had happened. I knew what was taking place would change everyone's way of thinking. I was thinking to myself, what if they used bombs on all of America? What if I never saw any of my family again? Why did this have to happen? <elementText elementTextId="615024">
<text>Spetember 11, 2001 was a glorious late summer day -- clear, dry, not too hot, with a cobalt blue sky. I was working at an outpatient clinic for substance abuse at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. I first heard about the attacks from our office manager. "A plane flew into the World Trade Center." A few minutes later she passed by my office. "A second plane just hit the other tower!" I joined other employees in the lounge. We watched with grim faces as the events of the morning continued to unfold: the plane crash into the Pentagon, the plane crash in Pennsylvania, and the falling of the towers. Many of us had loved ones at risk. The brother of a research assistant worked at the Pentagon. The son of our office manager worked near the World Trade Center. Hours passed before we heard that both were safe. Part of my job was to see substance abuse patients in the hospital, including the emergency room. When I entered the acute psychiatry ward of the ER, the medical director turned to me and said: "This is insane!" The number of visits to his ward would skyrocket over the next two weeks, as would the number of substance abuse patients seeking help. Case management services in the hospital that morning were on high overdrive as MGH hastily transferred patients to other hospitals in anticipation of overflow from New York trauma centers, a need that tragically was never needed because of the enormous number of fatalities. When I visited the trauma floors, I saw a lot of unknown faces in the nursing staff. Within an hour after the planes struck the WTC, an emergency trauma team was on its way to New York from MGH. Replacement nurses were called in. I tried to refer a substance abuse patient to a rehabilitation hospital substance abuse unit, but they were full. They had converted their bed capacity into regular rehabilitation services and taken patients from MGH and other hospitals. Too many of us at MGH lost loved ones that day. One of our physicians, a Muslim from the Middle East, lost a dear friend and colleague, a Muslim woman and her husband who were aboard Flight 11: she was eight months pregnant. A friend of mine from college, Stephen Adams, worked at the restaurant at the top of the WTC and he was lost that day. We had graduated from Marlboro College, a tiny liberal arts college in Vermont, and had 27 people in our graduating class. It was amazing to me that even our small class was touched with tragedy that day. One of my most vivid memories of that day was when Air Force jets flew over Boston in the afternoon. After so many hours of nothing in the sky, all of us on the street literally stopped in our tracks and stared upward to see what kind of planes were in the air. None of us moved until we realized they were military jets. In the days following September 11, it was strange to see the sky free of planes. I hadn't seen such a thing since I was a child in the late 1950's.</text>

<text>I worked nights in Marietta, GA at that time. I remember leaving work around five that morning and the big story at that point was whether Michael Jordan would come out of retirement and return to the NBA. Little did I know how starkly things would change in only a few hours. I did not sleep well that morning and I awoke around 9:30 am. I switched on the clock radio and turned the volume down low to lull myself back to sleep. I began hearing phrases such as "...200 foot gash in the front of the Pentagon" and "...Both World Trade Center towers have collapsed". I could not believe my ears. I went to turn the TV on. Words cannot describe the spectacularly horrific event I witnessed.

Because of the advent of the Internet and because of the advent of live TV, my family and I were able to witness the horrific events of 9-11-01 that was happening in New York City, Washington D.C. and in Pennslyvaina. <text>First let me say that I am a native New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan. I was at work in my office in Portland Maine when my wife called me and told me that a place had crashed into the North Tower of the WTC. I was shocked, however, immediately after she told me that the North Tower had been hit, she told me that the South Tower had exploded.

Our immediate concern was for our son inlaw, a NYPD Emergency Services police officer, assigned to Squad 2 in Manhattan. It was impossible to make phone contact with our daughter, however we later learned that he was off duty at the time of the attacks and would be going to the WTC remains. Unfotunately, three members of his squad, Sgt Mike Curtin, Det. Joe Vigiano and Officer John D'Allara were lost in the collapse of Tower 1. Additionally, Deputy Fire Commissioner Bill Feehan, brother of my best friend, was also killed at the WTC.

Our middle son, a computer programmer, had an appointment at the WTC at 10AM on 9/11. He learned of the attack as he got off the Long Island Railroad at Penn Station at 9AM. He went to the scene and volunteered with FEMA, setting up a triage center and hospital at Chelsea Pier, for three days. Unfortunately, no one came.

Our oldest son, a Navy Pilot assigned to an E4B that is identical to Air Force One, we learned later, was taking off from Andrews AFB at the time the hijacked aircraft hit the Pentagon.

Needless to say, it was a long day for our family, however, not as long as for those who lost family members and friends and who had to wait to hear from those who survived.</text>

<text>I guess that the word HATE comes immediately to mind. I was 6 years old when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. I distinctly remember coming out of church at 1:15PM on December 7th, 1941 seeing people crying and carrying on.
I have carried this memory and the hate that goes with it against the Japanese until September 11, 2001. At least the Japanese attacked a military target that had the ability to defend itself and retaliate.

On September 16, 2001 an organization called "Peace Action Maine" took out a full page ad in the Portland (Maine)Sunday Telegram admonishing the United States and its people not to go to war against terrorists and to make an effort to learn why these attackers hated us.

While I agree these people have every right to express themselves, I took it upon myself to attempt an e-mail dialog with them. They had to tell me that their members included a group called "Veterans for Peace". Well, DUH! I have never met a veteran who was not for peace. I did, however, make sure that every time a body was found and identified, be it a victim of emergency worker, I would send them a message. I cooled off somewhat, however, I still have a tremendous amount of hate in me toward those who did this act and those who support and pamper them.

My youngest son was married in New Hampshire on October 6, 2001. Since his brother the pilot was not sure that he would be there, my son invited my daughter's husband to be in the wedding party and asked that he wear his NYPD uniform, which he did. Needless to say, he was a pretty popular fellow at the wedding. My son and his bride wanted to give US Flag pins as favors to the guests, but could not find any. A store in lower Manhattan, that sufferd a financial loss after 9/11, sent 200 Flag pins at no charge.
At the end of the reception, the DJ played "New York State Of Mind" and "New York, NY". All of the attendees gathered around the bride and groom and my son in law and daughter, arms around each other and we all cried. The company that taped the wedding told us that that was the most moving and patriotic thing that they ever saw and now show it to all prospective customers.

I am extremely proud of my children and my son in law and I realize that some are always in extreme danger, however, that is the course that they chose for their life and I will support them forever.

To support New York, my wife and I retired and we have moved back to New York. Let these terrorists come and get us.</text>

My feelings for the Flag of the United States has never changed. I am happy to see that patriotism has returned to the United States. That people now take their hat off when the flag passes and sing the Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful and God Bless America without any hesitation.

It is a shame that it took this horrible occurance to wake them up.

the news of the bombings in New York City I was in between
classes at school. One of my friends comes up to me and says
point blank "the Twin Towers are gone". Before this event I
did not understand the importance of the World Trade Center so
I guess it did not really shoch me like it should have. I did
not know that it was a terrorist attack or they had actually
fallen. The lack of information was kind of annoying. When
school was over and I got home I got all the information that
had been released at that point. When i got ahold of more of
the information alot of emotions came into play. Pain, Anger,
Confusion, and about every other emotion was there. I'm watching
the news and our counntry has just taken a major blow and
people in Afghanistan are cheering in the streets. Once the
shock was over a new kind of emotion was there... Pride. Pride in our country,
our President, and this great Nation.

The World Trade Centers were burniing, people were jumping from windows, and then i was called to the office to go home.
I was glad that I could spend this scary and disturbing time with my family. As i sat at home watching i saw the secong falling building fall and saw replays of the pentagon getting hit. I was terrified. Not for me, not for my family and friends but frightened for my country.</text>

<text>On the 11th, my soon to be wife and I were in Hawaii. we were woken up at
around 530 AM, by my mother who was screeming franticly on the phone.
I remember Barb jumping out of bed and turning on the t.v. within seconds,
she beagn to cry. as i walked into the front room of the hotel, i saw the
second building go down. I thought it was a movie. As the news started to
ramble on about what had and was happening, I got dressed and drove to the
closest bank I could find. There was a long line of people taking money out of
the ATM in fear that the banking system would shut down. we were all amazed
at what had happened. the last thing i remember of that day, were the surfers
on their boards. they were sitting in the middle of the Kehi harbor. i doubt that
they knew what was happening, but it looked so surreal to
see people surfing as the world as we knew it changed so suddenly.</text>

<text>I was in volleyball practice before school in seventh grade. I was hot, sweaty, and ready for it to be over when my coach finally blew the whistle. Instead of us just leaving to change and get ready for class she gathered us around and asked us to sit down. When she told up what happened, I didn't think of it as any big thing until I went to my next class and saw it on the news. We didn't do any work all day. We just sat and watched as they showed the planes crashing and the buildings collapsing over and over again. You could see things falling from the buildings and I thought it was wood or windows or support that had collapsed, but then I realized it was people jumping. They knew that that was there only hope. All day I wondered if I was safe. Would my town be the next to be attacked?</text>

<text>Yes. Before the September 11, I never worried when I saw people from foreign countries. I never thought twice about terrorists. Now everytime I see someone that looks different or has an accent from another place, I wonder if he/she might be a terrorist. I treat other people differently than I would before the attacks. I smile a lot and try to be friendly because September 11 made me realize what a wonderful country I live in because of the way that everyone has come together. We've been such a strong nation through it all. We've helped each other to over come all the hurt, anger, and fear that the attacks caused. Because of this I'm happy to be an American and to be who I am. Although I'm scared of all the things that could and might happen, I try to stay positive and lead others by my actions.</text>
