I was home sick from school and just woke up and was flicking through the channels when I saw smoke coming from a huge building. I left the tv on and witnessed the 2nd building get hit as well as both collapseing. It was kinda sad and weird in a way because I was sort of in shock. I use to live in New York and was in the World Trade Center numerous times. I remember drinkin water from this machine with funnel cups in the top office. The principle told the teachers at the school to turn on the television because one of the twin towers was just hit by a plane. Our teacher turned on the television and we all watched the screen then the second one hit. We didn't even know where the twin towers were or what they were, we didn't even know what was going on at the time. Later the news person came on and said the pentagon was just hit by another plane. When I got home that night my dad was watching the television and that was when the first tower collapsed. Later on he told me the second tower fell. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On September 11, Fred and I were sleeping when the phone rang. We thought the call was the hotel waking us up. This is what we assumed was our last day in an all-inclusive Puerta Vallarta resort. Fred answered the phone to my father's voice. My father told Fred to turn on CNN, "the World Trade Center has been hit!" Fred thought my dad was joking! Fred, wierded out by the "joke", gave the phone to me. After my dad told me a plane went into the World Trade Center, I insisted for Fred to turn on the T.V. We were astonished when we saw the pictures. I think just like all Americans, we were shocked! I felt like I was watching an action movie, not real life terror! My father told Fred and I that we would need to look into extending our trip. He said, "no international flights would be arriving into the U.S.A." Fred ran out of the hotel room to the phone outside. He needed to call his family to make sure they were not hurt. His family lives in Long Island, New York. He found out all of his family was safe. For the remainder of the day, Fred and I sat in bed together, watching CNN. We held eachother. We felt abandoned from all other Americans. We obsessed over watching the news for hours! Fred and I had to stay in Mexico longer than we expected! We stayed four extra nights! To celebrate our potential departure, each night we assumed would be our last night! Then, in the morning, we'd get a phone call saying no flights are going into the U.S.A. Fred and I were missing work, and missing being home with other Americans. From the moment the plane hit the WTC, patriotism ran through my bloodsteam. I felt I needed to return home to share stories with the rest of the Americans. I wanted to hug my family and friends. Fred and I tried to make the best of our extended trip. We limited how much we watched CNN, and spent time lying on the beach. We had been dating for seven months, and now I knew for the rest of our lives, we would share this horrific American history. I believe the terrorism in NY hit Fred harder because of him growing up there. He shared stories with me about when he went up to the World Trade Center. Saturday night Fred and I ate dinner, and then decided to watch the entertainment at the hotel. We thought this was going to be one of our "last nights" in Mexico. We quickly realized that this day was the Mexican independence day. People were partying, drinking tequila, dancing, and singing! We quietly sat in our seat, watching all the Mexicans waving their Mexican flags. Fred and I realized we felt out of place. As the Mexicans were celebrating; we Americans were hurting, and feeling as if the terrorists took our independence! Sunday morning we got on one of the first international flights back into the United States. I will never forget when we were landing into Houston; all of the passengers applauded. We all smiled. There was smoke coming out of it and it seemed like a chimney. I thought it was a horrible accident at first, but when I saw the 2nd plane go into the other tower I knew that it wasn't an accident. At school that day nobody was doing schoolwork, everyone was watching the news. Everyone at shool was talking about what happened and many people had different stories depending on who they heard about it from. It was kind of scary and it seemed like it was a movie because it didn't seem real at all that something like this would happen in the United States with no sort of warning at all. My life hasn't really changed at all since 9-11-03. I didn't know anyone who was involved with the tragedy, but it still is something I won't soon forget. All of the people who died saving other people's lives, all the people who dug through the rubble for weeks to find any more survivors, and any innocent people who died in the towers or anywhere else from this attack shoud be remembered. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was on the summit of Haleakala on the Hawaiian island of Maui. I had left my hotel in the middle of the night to watch dawn at the summit, and had driven with the radio off, enjoying the feel of the darkness and silence of the night. As usual, quite a crowd had formed to witness the sunrise. Around 5:30 am someone in the crowd mentioned "The World Trade Center is no longer there." I thought this was a curious thing to say, and assumed the person was talking about some movie -- how could anything like that be true? -- and I joined everyone else in observing the fiery sun emerge through the clouds. The normality of the whole thing was striking. People were laughing, taking pictures of each other. But I felt increasingly uneasy and, with the sun finished with its performance, I made a bolt for the car, put on the radio, and heard the dreadful truth. The military closed the top section of the park -- there is a research base called "Science City" up there -- and remaining visitors were ushered down. A group were setting off on a bike ride, as per normal, but most people left the park altogether. I paused to consider what to do with the rest of the day, and decided there was little to be gained from watching TV in the hotel room -- there would be enough of that in the evening. So I took a 12-mile hike down and across the crater floor. The place was almost deserted. I hardly saw another soul the whole day. It is an environment of alien colors and strange shapes and forms. The experience was at once beautiful and surreal and troubling. The terrorist events of the day seemed far away yet ever present, and the horror seemed both unimaginable and reflected in the imposing natural forms of the Hawaiian landscape. A park ranger spotted me as I completed the hike and kindly gave me a ride back to the car. Then I returned to the hotel, and stayed glued to the TV like everyone else, the reality which had not wished to quite confirm itself during the day -- we really don't want to believe such evil can happen -- finally sinking in. Each and every person who was injured or died or lost a love one together will all who contributed bravely to the rescue effort should be remembered for ever. The terrorists deserve no memory. I remember looking at the clock and saying to myself it's to early to get up, so I turned on the tv to catch Regis & kelly. I couldn't firgure out why I had no tv, as I turned channels I saw nothing but snow. I got to ch2 the one I can never get any other time, I saw the 1st wtc on fire. Not knowing what had happen I called my daughter in Virgina cause she has cable, I said Vi cut on your tv and tell me what's going on up here I think someone's tring to blow us up cause the wtc got hit by a plane. As she"s informing me about the plane and I'm looking at ch2 I see the 2nd plane come into the picture I said oh my god Vi do you see it, here comes another one, and then it turned like a car making a u turn and went right into the building. Only now I get on my knees and pray and give thanks for all that he has done for me and my family. I ask him to give the families of all we loss the courage to go on living and not give up, that he looks down on all the chilren and watch over them, this I do every day. On my job when people start to complain about little things I'm the first to remind them how bless they are to be among the living and they should give god the praise for what thay have. That this was an evil act not a god's will. When you look at, or hear a child remember this could be one who's parent could not and will not be home again because of 9/11. So 2000 it was Alaska, 2001 Hawaii, 2002 Las Vegas. If the Lord grants me 2003 look out New Orleans here we come. My best friend Mark explained to me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I spent the next few minutes talking to him as I watched the news. Moments later I watched live the second plane hit the south tower. I could not believe what I had just seen. At that moment, I remember a horrible and tragic feeling hitting my heart. Although at that moment I knew no one in New York City, it still was heart wrenching to see that. I called my father as I started to head to school. One scene that I will always remember is walking into the student union at New Mexico State University, and seeing a huge mass of students transfixed on the big screen television. I don't live in New York, but it still devestated many of us. It was about 8:30 in the morning when my principal came ont he intercom and said that the WTC had been hit but thet didn't know by what. My reaction was like Oh My Gosh, what is going to happen now. Well, I switched classes and everybody in school was watching the news to see what was going on. While we were in class the second plane hit the WTC. That's when I remember the president said that it was most likely a terrorist attack. I also remember thinking to myself "what is my brother doing," I was thinking that because September 11 is my brothers birthday. It has changed the way i think about the world. He went through basic training and is now in Germany on call to goto Iraq, because of the terrorist attacks. My brother has only been in Germany for a few months, but I realized that he did this so he can serve his country. I think the main thing that should be remembered about 9-11, is that it is not a joke. everybody should pray for the troops. My husband and I had the alarm clock set for 7:00 am (Arizona Standard time) and were awakened by a somber voice on NPR announcing some sort of terrorist attacks. Confused, but roused immediately, we bolted out of bed and turned on the television to find the horror that the rest of the country had been witnessing. There was much confusion about what had happened and the news channels weren't reporting very clearly. When the second tower fell I thought it was a replay of the falling of the first tower. Terrified and upset, we called our neighbors and friends downstairs to wake them up (they didn't have television)as well as our families and friends. As the day progressed more of our friends and family came to be with us and stare helplessly at the television. I think I sat in front of the TV the whole day with tears in my eyes and my hand in front of my mouth. Although not materially affected by the September 11 attacks, I do have friends in New York and family and friends in Washington D.C., all of whom were close to the attacks. We spent part of the day trying to contact them and were graced with relief when everyone was accounted for and safe. We were all waiting for the other shoe to drop. A plane into the Sears Tower in Chicago (my hometown) or another explosion somewhere else. Even from afar, the attacks left all of us feeling terrified and violated. You can't take that away. I can't subscribe to the cult of heroism that has been aroused by this national tragedy. Although I would never commend anyone for terrorist actions like that, I can certainly understand why other cultures not only hate the United States, but the economic and social culture that it perpetuates. It has certainly placed me as more of a political outsider since I don't subscribe to the new nationalist structure of feeling. It has also reinforced my beliefs in a state without religion and not buttressed by military intrusion, both of which have escalated in the wake of the attacks. September 11th, 2001, tragic, horrible, and inexcusable, has only strengthened my political beliefs in the kind of country I support. Unfortunately, we are not living up to that standard so far. As I was folding my clothes up I switched on the TV and they were playing the shots of the planes hitting the World Trade Centre, over and over. Since I work second shift I had not gotten out of bed until after 8 AM and turned on the TV to my local news channel. At first I thought "why are they showing the bombing of the world trade center" and then I realized it was happening right then and there. As we were leaving, teahcers were whispering about a serious bomb. It was aggravating not knowing what was going on. Soon, various teachers began interupting classes and pulling our teacher out into the hall. Talk about frustraitng. Finally, a few students begged and begged to be clued in. Later, we wished we had never known The World Trade Centers had been attacked. Several were injured, some already dead. A TV was pulled into the classroom, and we watched as despereate people jumped from over 11 stories high. Fighfighters kept entering the building, but hardly any came out. We watched as the second plane hit, and the first tower collapsed. Then we heard about the Pentagon. It was all too much, we turned the TV off. On September 11th I woke up as if it was any normal day, I took a shower, brushed my hair and prepared for school. When I walked into my living room my step-father had cnn news on. At first I took a glance and ignored the informing news; however, when I heared my mother crying I ran into the room and looked more observingly at the television. I saw the first tower that had been hit. Smoke was coming out the side and fire was blazing. The first thing I thought was of all the people on the airplane and all their loved ones, so I prayed for them. Then at fatal thing happened, the first tower fell; right then and there I knew thousands of people had lost their lives so again I prayed. Soon it was time for me to go to school but before I left I heared faintly on the television that the second tower had been hit. I glanced at the TV and it showed the impact between the tower and the airplane. I got in my brothers car and he turned on the radio; on every channel there was news about the towers. I sat in the car and for 45 minutes, listened to the updates on the towers, and at one point I remember the person on the radio announcing that the second tower had fell. When I arrived at school that was all everyone was talking about. In the Purple Penguin, a little school store, I watched the TV that was placed in there and watched them show the plane hitting the second tower and both of the towers falling. My Life has not really been changed because if September 11th, except for the fact that everyday I am more appreciative of my family and friends, because I never know when I can lose them. I think that all the brave firemen and police men who helped get as many people as they could out of the twin towers. They risked their lives to save oters and some even lost their life in the whole ordeal. We really came togerther as a community to help with fundraisers for the firemen and people who lost their homes. I also want to be shown on the record that just because of this tragedy our economy did not fall apart it only made it ten times stronger. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I grew up in Coney Island and moved to Southern California in 1990. I happened to be in NY on September 11th. This was one of many return trips to my beloved city. My friend and neighbor had never been to NY so I took her with me. We planned to be down at the Liberty Island ferry dock at 8:15 on the morning of the 11th. Because it rained all day on Monday, September 10th I took Gail to Macy's and we spent the whole day shopping. She was too tired to get up in time to be at the statue's ferry by 8:15 so we slept in. Gail's husband called us right after the north tower was hit to see if we were okay. We watched the disaster unfold on the television. Because our hotel was on West 72nd Street near the park, we didn't hear anything from the actual site. I was too stunned to speak. Around noon we headed out and just wandered into the park and walked around with all the other stunned people. We ended up in Rockefeller Plaza which already had barricades set up. I saw Ed Koch being interviewed on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral. I thought it was ironic that in all my years living in NY, I had never seen him in person, and now here he was right in front of me. Seeing him somehow seemed reassuring, although I don't know why. I went to write my name in the cathedral's guest book and saw that I was the first to mention something about that fateful day. In the pews I saw people covered in white powder, and some of them were missing shoes. I wanted to help them somehow, but they seemed to be too much in shock yet to have someone approach them. I remember thinking they needed a little more time. I also remember seeing cabs go by with passengers who were openly sobbing. I couldn't absorb what was happening. I wanted to be home with my husband and twin boys who were eight years old then. I didn't know when or how I was going to get home. I remember that moment was the first time I was truly frightened by what was happening. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life started changing the moment the towers were hit, and the change continues to this day. I don't regret being in NY when it happened because it is still my beloved city. I left NY on September 15th on my originally scheduled flight from JFK. From that day to this I still haven't found help for my terrible feelings about the event. I had a husband, two beautiful boys and an elderly father to take care of and their lives really haven't changed because of the event. I, on the other hand, go through each day pretending that all is well in order to keep things going here, while knowing in my heart that my city is changing because of the event and I'm not there changing with it. I feel that my city is slipping away from me because unless I'm there to know what the changes are, it will no longer be the home I remember. I wanted desperately to do something... serve food, move rubble, remove dust, anything, but instead I found myself doing the everyday things that seemed horribly trivial in comparison. I'm as lost today as I was then. I didn't really like the looks of the towers... they kind of reminded me of really boring Leggos, but they were still MY buildings and nobody had the right to take them from me. I watched them being built. I saw them every morning and evening when my train crossed the Manhattan Bridge. They were a part of my skyline and I took them for granted. Although they weren't a source of comfort when they were there - their absence now represent a terrible, terrible tragedy from which I hope to awaken but know I never will. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think what should be remembered are the thousands who lost their lives that day in the most horrific, unspeakable way imaginable. I can't help thinking about the terror those people experienced being cooked alive up there, watching the tower next to them collapse, watching people fly past them as they jumped from higher floors, and not knowing which was worse, burning or falling, 2 of most people's worst fears. They should always be remembered for the sakes of their families and friends. We should remember the kindnesses and heroism, both big and small we all witnessed that day and keep it alive forever. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I didn't fly a flag afterwards because I didn't already own one and I didn't want to contribute to the money mongers who were cashing in on the tragedy. Of course I have much stronger feelings now for my flag than I ever did, mostly because I took my safety and security as an American citizen as a given. I realize now that my flag needs me as much as I need it. It represents to me kindness, love, strength, boldness, patience, safety and security. I pray it always will. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. I was at work for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Omaha, Nebraska. A co-worker walked by and said a plane had struck the World Trade Center in New York City. For the entire office, the rest of the day was devoted to watching the news on TV or on the Internet. We heard that all flights had been cancelled everywhere in the United States. A little after 2:00pm, I heard a plane approaching and flying overhead. This was very upsetting since we knew that no commercial plane was in the air. It was shortly after that, the news announced that President Bush had flown to Offutt Air Force Base where the Command Center for Strategic Command is located. That's when I realized that the plane I heard overhead had been the President's. It was such a comforting feeling knowing that Nebraska, and Offutt AFB played a role in the 9-11 events. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Definitely more patriotic. I've always been a "flag-waver" my entire life. I've always lived close to the air force base and worked for the government, and I always appreciated the role our servicemembers played in our freedom. But with 9-11, it's taken on a new outlook. I also look at our police officers and firefighters with much more respect than before. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The innocent victims of this terrorist act should be remembered. Thousands of lives were lost. Thousands more were left without parents, children, grandparents, etc. But our country will survive. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? I've always been a flag-waver. I always tried to celebrate holidays by flying the flag at home. But it has taken on a new meaning, pride in my country and the way we didn't let this terrorist attack get us down. I will continue to fly my flag. I now have two at my desk as a special remembrance.
