I thought it was just a anounsment for a assembly, but he anounsed that the World Trade Centers had been bombed, and the teachers turned on the TV and then we saw a second plain hit the buildings. At that time I was disapointed and sad then I heard the the Pentagon was also bombed. And at that time I thought who would do such a thing.Then the teachers decided to go on with class and turn off the news wich I could not believe. During that whole class period was thinking obout my family and the millions of other familys having mothers, fathers, children, and relatives dieing. Like the majority of america, i watched the devastation on CNN at school until the media started doing it's job and showing the most grotesque scenes of people jumping out of the twin towers and such. September 11 hasn't changed my life drastically. I think I live too far from ground zero in Arizona to really grasp the concept of the twin towers being absent in the Manhattan skyline and the real effects it has. But in the long run, this whole thing sickness me. No matter what we say, the U.S. brought this upon itself. I'm not condoning the attacks in anyway, 9/11 was a horrible act and should never be condoned or rationalized, but the fact is, the U.S. isn't the great shining beacon of freedom and democracy everyone in the U.S. is lead to believe. I read somewhere that 15% of the population has passports. 15%. That means 85% of Americans have never been outside of the U.S. before. They are ignorant to the situation outside of this country with the exception of what they see on T.V.(media, what a joke). Americans don't realize this kind of thing happens all the time in countries everywhere but here. I forget who it was that said this but he was a british politician that said "American hides between their 2 oceans." What he said was very true. American is very isolated from the rest of the world. American is nothing like Europe with many countries sharing boarders with each other. This is why American are so ignorant. They are ignorant the fact that America is just too nosy into other peoples problems and that is the reason why people outside of this country are so anti-american. But instead of doing a head on aproach like vietnam, they do sneaky little things like giving weapons to Iran to fight Iraq and Iraq to fight Iran. WE gave weapons to Osama to fight Russian in a revolution, and when we asked for them back, he said no. Whoever is reading this, 10, 100, even 1000 years from now, just remember, America isn't the good, riteous country people said it was. This country might have the best form of government, but that doesn't mean it is always right in it's causes. I had no idea about it so on my walk home I stopped at my friend's house to call and ask my mom if I could stay. When I called, my dad picked up and as soon as I said "Hi Dad" he was yelling that he was coming to get me because of the New York bombings. I had no idea what he was talking about so we asked my friend Amanda's mom. She told us what happened and turned on the T.V. We were stunned, but soon my dad was there to take me home. When I got home my mom was crying. All night i was so scared, I watched the events on T.V. As the day after September 11th went by, my mom made flags and flag pins for everyone. I never thought that in a million years I would be alive to witness a historical event. I was in my third period reading class and we were dicussing a book and a teacher ran into my class crying and told my teacher to turn the t.v on. At that moment I knew that something was wrong and that something just wasnt right. My teacher turned the t.v on and it said, "Breaking news, the second plane has just crashed into the second tower." We sat in silence for about 20 minuets until everyone was aware of how the two towers came crashing down and why. At that exact moment I still really wasnt sure what was going on I didnt know if whether I should be sad or mad, even happy. I was so confused. Then my tecaher Mrs. Edwards explained to us about Osama Bin Ladin and Al-Quaeda didnt like The United States. Also hearing about how the Pentagon was crashed into on te same day I was just sad. A round trip flight to Albuquerque, NM to visit my brother for the first time in almost 7 years. I put my suitcases by the door and turned on the television and saw what was happening, was horrified but it all seemed so unreal. I then heard the fact that all planes were grounded and I remember feeling so disappointed. After watching TV for the next 3 days straight...I finally realized not everything was about me, and was horrified at the comprehension of the loss of life and families and everything. We were watching the t.v. and the first plane had aleady hit one of the twin towers. We were watching it for about 10 more minutes and then we saw the second one hit. It was terrifying to watch i couldnt imagin actually being in New York at that time. I did not realize the extent of these attacks at first until i saw my teacher almost sheding a tear. After that i didnt know what to expect. I was thinking what if the terrorists start to target other big cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas. And as all these thoughts were going through my head the first tower crumbled to the ground killing numerous amounts of people. Then i herd the t.v. reporter say "let's switch our camera's back to Washington D.C." The next thing i knew i saw the pentegon on fire with plane that had crashed into it. i was now really scared that our country was in real jepordy. I thought tha beacuse i always saw specials on t.v. about how the pentagon has o much security that it is impossible to so anything harmful to it. As I packed my bag, I checked my e-mail for any last details. I received a message: "I'm sure you've heard the news (if not, you'd better turn on your TV right now). " So I did and watched live as the second plane buried itself into the WTC. We hoped that our trip could continue not knowing the cause or extent of the damage. I find that I have a greater regard for any foreign visitor because we now share a bond of being survivors of terrorist attacks on our fellow countrymen. Many nations lost friends in the WTC attack, I remember that the world, not the US was attacked that day and that we should admire and protect the beauty of this country and the freedom that we have that terrorists fear. Yes I saw September 11th last year and it is often described as the biggest massacre of America. I saw two incredibly important buildings destroyed by what is now called 'the enemy'. This is not history, not yet. These events are still in progress. We are still reacting, still giving pain for pain for pain. My life has changed; parts of me are weakened, parts strengthened. I am more compassionate, less wilfull. We cannot remember and pass on hatred because of this. We must give to our posterity the hope that we will heal both our attackers and ourselves. My first thought was "OH NO" someone is in big trouble in the control towers for making such an error. As I walked into the office the second plane hit and I knew at this time it was not a control tower error and became scared, then the news of the plane that crashed in Penn. now that was hitting close to home. My family is from Maryland and Penn. and my parents had taken a trip up there to visit while this was happening. I knew they had planned a picnic with my Uncle in Penn that day and was terrified they had left and did not know what to do. The panic set in I had to find a way to reach them and by gods grace was able to get a line out from Texas to Maryland and talk to them and that is when my dad explained what he could see and hear and that the United States was under attack. I felt helpless, scared and alone. I could hear rescue vechiles in the background as we spoke and begged them to come home and not fly rent a car and drive. Then my next thought was the BP office by my house received an evacuation bomb threat and that was too close to my children. I ran home grabbed my daughter and called my son who was in college at Baylor University to tell them how much I loved them and what how much they meant to me. I felt safe with the youngest being up in Waco by the mility base I knew he would be well taken care of but I still had that urge to go run and grab him. I believe that we all learned a valuable lesson that life is too short. We charish every moment we are with one another and never leave without telling the other one we love them. I remember that night my daughter who is 20 asked me mom will we be alive tomorrow? I told her I could not answer that question it was in gods hands and to say her prays and that I loved her very much. That evening the fighter jets flew over our home around 2 a.m. at first I was scared to death but then when I went outside and saw what it was I felt a calm peace come over. "Come see this Gloria, I think you'll be talking about this in school today!" She screamed at me. At first I really didn't give it a whole lot of thought but when I saw our kitchen T.V, I could not believe it. A large tower... with smoke coming out of the side. The tower looked familiar but at the time, without the other tower in the picture, I didn't know that it was the World Trade Center. As my mother filled me in on what had happened and suspicions of terrorism, the second tower was hit. I watched, in horror as fire shot out the opposite side of where the plane hit; just thinking about those poor people that had to have been working when the planes hit their building. I couldn't help but wonder if this attack on the World Trade Center was just an intro to what was going to happen. I couldn't help being selfish and fearing for my own town, my neighborhood, my home. If this was actually some terrorist attack, whats stopping them from continuing the attack on other states, cities, or monuments? I went back to my room to start getting ready for school and I started thinking about the people. The people in those towers, just doing there job, minding their own business. The people down on the streets looking up at the smoking towers that had become a part of their daily lives in one way or another. The people on the planes that were kidnapped in mid-air and were being thrown into the towers. The brave heros who ran, willingly into the towers trying to save lives. The people who were watching this tragedy on T.V that are crying and mourning for the victims, whether the ones they cry for are loved ones, or complete strangers. And of course, those crazy people that could bring themselves to doing such a horrific thing; killing so many innocent, causing so much pain. What was going through their minds, what drove them to insanity? I was finishing my hair when I heard my mothers shrills from the kitchen and I knew, something bad was happening. I ran to the T.V and caught a replay of the first tower falling. I watched as my mixed emotions gathered up into tears. The building crumbled and fell like a house of cards. The people, those poor people. The firemen had just run in, and now they lay burried under the rubble. Their grave sight had been choosen for them, and there was nothing they could do. Then the second tower fell. I grew cold, and time seemed to stand still. I felt helpless sitting at the breakfast table staring at a T.V screen, but what could I do? The one thing I knew I could do, and would do, was pray. I would pray for all the people involved. The victims, may God watch over them and lead them safely to his home. We were about to watch a movie when we caught a sight of what had happen on news. I was driving under the off-ramp of the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan, on the way to work at a Wall Street firm, and listening to a gospel CD. A man in a large SUV started swerving wildly and almost forced me into one of the support pillars. After some artful dodging, he pull off the road right in front of me. I stopped to see if he was ill and noticed that he was pounding on the steering wheel and screaming. After deciding that he was crazy, not sick, I chose to leave him to his own tantrums, thank God that I was OK, and then proceed to work. But there was nowhere to go. Traffic had stopped completely. I turned on the radio to hear the traffic report, and instead heard that the second plane had just crashed into the Twin Towers. Eventually police cars and fire trucks from my neighborhood in Riverdale (Bronx), forced traffic into two lanes and sped past us. A lot of the people that raced past us made it down town in time to die. They made me do a U-turn under West Side Highway at 155 street, and just as I was able to receive radio transmission again, the first tower collapsed. As I stopped to get medication from the local pharmacy, the second one came down. My second most vivid moment was a woman in the store holding a baby and screaming hysterically that her husband worked in one of the buildings. Eventually she started hyperventilating. While people were standing around not knowing what to do, I yelled at her to get her attention, started her on breathing exercises, and convinced her that she needed to keep it together for the baby. I went home, turned on two radios, two TV's, and two computers, and sat in a trance for 2 days. It was the 13th before I realized that I should change my clothes and take a bath. My first job in New York, 35 years ago, was in the vault of a brokerage company under WTC #7...the building that collapsed later in the day. From 1975 to 1976, I worked for New York Telephone, in the Gothic looking building right next door to #7. From 1977 to 1985 I worked at One Liberty Plaza (the one that people also thought might collapse). From 1985 to 1992, I worked in #2 World Financial Center, the building right across West Street that you kept seeing all the dust fly into when the first tower collapsed. My daughter's high school graduation party was at Windows on the World, and her college graduation party was in the Winter Garden (the glass structure that was so terribly damaged). I went to meetings in the World Financial Center regularly and walked across those destroyed bridges regularly to shop at my favorite book store and dress shop. I was forced to retire after 25 years because my company had to do massive layoffs after the attack. Ironically, I found a temporary consulting position, working with people whose offices used to be where the big gash is in the Deutsche Bank building (that's the one where they found the last body parts). September 11th was a tragic event that has captured the heats of millions worldwide, and now it is only a faint memory. This event changed the whole world, and devastated the United States. The day it happened, insecurity and fear then overwhelmed me. That insecurity and fear changed to hatred. When I look out the window to see the World Trade Center, it's no longer there. There is an empty spot in NYC and me. I feel something is missing, something very big. I feel the need for more security than before. My biggest change after the event has been is that I don't know when there is going to be another attack or a possible World War III feeling. Since there is a real possibility of a World War III, I pray to God to hold off another tragic day like September 11, 2001.
