Though I was half asleep I was still quite aware of what was going on. As my mom had I dropped my jaw in utter disbelief. To my horror I watched as they replayed over and over again the first plane flying into the first tower. This went on for about twenty minutes when all of the sudden a second plane flew into the second building. By this time you could imagine what was going through my head. I was thinking that when we find out who did this they were really going to pay. Ever since then every time I hear the pledge of allegance or the national anthum it makes me want join the military and fight for my country. </text>

<text>I was sleeping on the morning of September 11th, I woke up to the sound of the news program Good Morning America. I could make out that they were talking about a plane that hit the World Trade Center. Turning over in bed my first thought was that a small plane had hit and I thought about the Jet that hit the Empire State building Many years ago.
Thinking that it was sad but not a big deal in my life I rolled over and tried to get back to sleep. From the television set I heard the reporter say " Oh My God, another plane has just hit The World Trade Center."
I sat up in bed just in time to see the replay and think to myself "No, that didn't just happen." I though for sure the plane went past the building and then I saw the fireball.
I could tell by the size of the plane that it was a commercial airliner and not a small plane.
I called my mother and we watched together. She was in Virginia and I was in Atlanta. As we watched I could see the towers leaning. I knew that they would collapse. When they did finally fall, I fell with them and stayed there on the floor of my living room in tears. I live near a military base and the sound of jets flying over as they scrambled for their different assignments would send my eyes skyward with a fear of what was coming next. So many things stand out about that day. When I got to work that afternoon everyone was in shock and glued to CNN. In the hallways you would hear the mumblings of different disscussions and the words "Bastards" and "terrorists".
That day on my way to work I stopped and bought as many American flags as I could find. I put them all over my car and they are still there a year later.

<text>I, as well as the rest of America, witnessed history on September 11th, 2001. On this day, just like any other week day,I was in school. I was going into my third period class which is History. The television was on when i walked in and the few students that were in the class were watching CNN. The teacher wasn't in the classroom yet. I just sat down and watched. It said that the first tower had been hit and they thought it was an accident. The teacher came into class and knew what was going on because she was watching TV in another room. Then we all sat there and watched as the second tower was hit. By this time they still weren't sure if it was an accident or not. But then when there was an explosion in the Pentagon I think everybody knew that it wasn't an accident. At the end of the period we turned off the TV and talked about what had happend. By next period we were not allowed to watch TV anymore and the principal said to proceed as a normal day which was next to immpossible to do. Everybody was really in awe of everything that happend and we were all part of history that day.</text>

I, personally, have not gone to the airport since this happend, but people have told me about their experiences. <text>I always turn on Good Morning America while getting ready for work. I turned on the TV and jumped in the shower. When I came out, I sat on the futon to watch the show and at first thought Diane Sawyer was annoucing an upcoming segment for 20/20 or one of those news shows. As I was running late, I turned off the tv and left for work. I was living in Las Vegas at the time so, we were 3 hours behind New York time. I didn't realize what had happened until I arrived at work. My friend Michael was listening to Public Radio and he told me the World Trade Center had been 'hit' by airplanes.

That evening I sat in front of the tv until 2 or 3 in the morning. The next day I remember going to work and thinking "this is not right" we should all be in a church praying.

Immediately my place of employment began laying off workers as conventions were cancelling left and right. Barely had the events of September 11th hit home emotionally and Encore, where I worked, started laying people off.

That Friday a group of us went to a Catholic Church were a memorial was held. I cried and cried for the loss of human life, to me, was overwhelming.

I remember thinking "oh my God, what about Olivia?" Olivia is my daughter and she was to turn 5 years old on that following Sunday. I say I thought about Olivia for I truly thought the end of the world had come. And I was so worried that my daughter and I would not be able to grow old together. I keep thinking, what type of world will we have after this? -- I love this little girl so much, please don't let anything happen to her or to us.

I lost my job on September 20th and so did about 20,000 people in Las Vegas. My lose of a job was nothing compared to the loss of the 3000 innocent people who died that day.</text>

<text>My life has changed forever as I feel America has changed forever. I no longer carry the feeling of 'being safe' by living here.

Also, I was compelled to visit the World Trade Center site to pay my respects to the souls that died there. I made the journey, in 2003. I prayed the rosary at the site and sat across the street, in the park, for hours. Somehow, I felt that if I sat near the fallen towers, those who had died would know I will never forget them.

I never found work in my chosen field again. Perhaps I didn't want to for producing conventions for flooring manufactuers and huge corporations seemed silly compared and a waste of time.

I instead, became a Security Screener for TSA. A proud Screener, as I feel, somehow this is the only way I can do anything to help protect the country I love.

I now continue my work for TSA, and Homeland Security at TSA Headquarters in Orlando, FL. I went 'home' to Florida as I wanted to be closer to those I love. I shall stay in Government Service for as long as I am able, for I believe in America, and I also believe we each have a respoinsibility to keep this country safe.

I was a little scared but didnt pay much attention to it cuz it seemed outrageous. I got into my next class right after the second plane hit hit. They rest of my school day was all about the attacks. In every class we watched the news or had a disscussion about what was happening. i think the discussions helped me out alot. when i got home i watched some more of the news. My mom was crying for most of the night, even though we had no direct relation to anyone involved. She was scared though for her sister and her family who live in washington DC. The rest of the week was had a aura around it that i dont think i have felt ever before.</text>

I grew to become very sick of the events and i almost felt like they had become easy sappy filler for the media. I have had distast for the whole thing, but after the 1 year anniverary i again feel sorrow. in my soul i believe that the events should be revered on this day ( or days), but not every day of the year.</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="617814">
<text>On September 11, 2001, as the first tower was being hit, I was 13 and getting ready for school with no idea what was going on. I did my usual and met up with my friend to walk to school. On the way, she mentioned how her aunt called her to tell her "a plane crashed into some building", but she said it so nonchalantly that I didn't think anything of it. We walked into 7-Eleven and as we were buying stuff, I heard the people on the radio talking about this plane too. After that I figured it was a little more important than my friend was letting on. When I got to school everybody was talking about it and my first period teacher had the news on the television. That was the first time I really understood what was going on. They replayed the footage over and over and by the time I saw it, both planes had crashed into the towers. I was still confused but a little more aware of the seriousness of the situation. As the day went by, all my teachers spoke about it but did not show the news because our principal ordered them not to. She assumed we were too young to see what was going on and didn't want to worry us. That was the dumbest thing I had heard. Sooner or later we were going to see what happened. It was possibly the biggest thing that was going to happen to our country in all our lives. When I got home, I ran upstairs and watched the news all night long. Even though I was an ocean away, it hit me hard. Seeing the tapes and the second plane hitting was astonishing. All the innocent people being killed and in danger because of some crazy fanatics was unbelieveable. After seeing the planes crash into the towers and then hearing about the pentagon being hit, I felt like that was the day our country was going to fall down. Like that was the end for all of us. It was as if terrorists were everywhere and crashing planes in every major city they could. Even though New York was on the other side of the country, I didn't feel safe. I worried they would attack California, (Los Angeles) next and that was the end. Before that day, I had the feeling that politics were bigger and able to protect us, as were our parents and teachers. But after the events, I remember having a strong feeling that everybody was in the same boat now. Little children were scared and in confusion and surprised and so were those older, wiser adults I looked up to. I felt so unprotected and like the terrorists had the upper-hand. I remember my science teacher telling us that we will all remember what we were wearing that day the towers and the pentagon were hit, and he's right. Khaki pants and a striped shirt. And I'll never forget.</text>

Before the horrible day, our country was divided by racism and sexism and many other issues. Even if just for that one year after September 11, America was brought together in hurt, love, pain, and pride. It's sad to see that gone now and we're back to our old ways. <text>I woke up that morning and went to work just like any other day. I work at the World Trade Center in Minnesota. I didn't have my radio that morning, and so I remember walking into the building and seeing so many people standing around watching a tv in the lobby with looks on thier face like they'd just seen the devil (little did I know how true that would be).
When I went up to my office, everyone was standing around a TV inside our conference room with that same look. I started watching in shock. I couldn't believe what was happening. Then my phone started ringing and it was family members telling me to get out of my building and go home. The concern in thier voices made me listen.
I remember the drive home, listening in disbelief, and just counting the minutes until I had my daughter in my arms, because until then, I felt an emptiness. I can only imagine the emptiness so many others felt that day. Luckily for me, I was able to hold my daughter, I pray for those who couldnt.
My TV stayed on for a week straight I think. Watching everything, listening, and praying.
My 3 year old daughter could only understand that so many people go hurt that day, I couldnt answer all of her questions, but together we lit a candle and left it burn in our window. Thats something she will remember.</text>

<text>I remember that day like it was yesterday, as it was the scariest I had ever experienced. I am a full time college student at Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida. I was in class that morning, and when I walked into Chapel at 9:55 am CST, I found my best friend sitting in my seat. I said hello and asked what he was doing in my seat, and he responded, with a very solemn tone, "Have you spoken to your Father?" I looked at him, and responded that I had not spoken to him since the previous weekend. When I asked him why he asked, he told me of the attacks. Being my best friend, he knew that my Father worked in the Pentagon as a government contractor, and was there on a daily basis. I stumbled into my seat, and nearly passed out from fear. I remember sitting in my seat, crying, as the Vice President of the College stood in front of the student body and gave us what sketchy details we had at the time. When he finished, our Pastor gave us a short thought from God's Word, and dismissed us. Those of us who had loved ones in the Pentagon or World Trade Center were asked to attend a special prayer meeting there in the sanctuary immediately following the chapel hour. As soon as we were dismissed however, I ran to the nearest phone and attempted to contact my Mother, Father, sister, brother, even Grandmother in Pennsylvania. Every number I dialed was busy, and I could not get ahold of anyone. It was then that I made my way into the prayer meeting, and found I was not alone. There were nearly 100 fellow students with loved ones in the Pentagon or World Trade Center. We broke up into groups of 3 or 4, with school administrators, and began to pray for our loved ones. I did not hear from anyone in my family until almost noon, central time, but I did manage to get in touch with the secretary at my Church in Herndon Virginia. As soon as I heard her voice, I asked if she had by any chance heard from my Father, and it was then that I was informed my Father was safe. His office was a mere 100 yards or less from where the plane made impact, and had escaped out the building before the fires reached him. He had to walk several miles to the nearest subway station in order to get home, as public transportation in the entire DC area had been shut down. I cannot describe the fear I had in my heart until I heard my Father was safe, and even harder to describe would be the relief I felt when I heard he was safe. I can only thank the One and Only Holy God for seeing fit to spare my Father from the terrorists who committed such a heinous act against the greatest nation in the world.</text>

I asked what do you mean he is O.K. well there was a plane crash well 3 of them 2 in to the World Trade Center and one in to the Pentagon they are believed to be terrorist attacks. And there is rumor one crashed in Penn. But your father is fine. My first thouhgt was he was probably on a flight, since he's a world wide traveler, but how would he be alright. They then said he called he wasn't in the crash or hurt. I proceded with questions asking do you know what time it occured, my dad works around that area in the morning. Around 9 oclock eastern time. My dad got off work at 8:30. All I could think of was I'm so lucky he's still here and alright. I didn't think of the thousands of other victims and family's who would not be that lucky till minutes later. And for that I am ashamed</text>

<text>The following is extracted from a letter I wrote on September 12:
September 12, 2001

Dear Ann,
It seems like a lifetime has passed since Bonnie and I were with you in Cambridge last Saturday night. I had wanted to thank you for that evening and especially for the kindness you showed Bonnie after her late and, I understand, somewhat slapstick, arrival, but in this busy week that suddenly seemed to stop yesterday morning I had not gotten to it. Then tonight On the Morning of the Unthinkable was in my e-mail and after twenty-two years, I have yet another gift to thank you for.

Bonnie is in Florida. She was supposed to be home tomorrow evening but air traffic will not resume by then. She and my mom are not getting along very well, which is not surprising, since my mom is very difficult.

I got the news yesterday when I walked into my office a few minutes after the second plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Many of my co-workers had watched it happen. At about 10:30 we were told to go home. I like you knew that it was a day for prayer, but I was stopped first by a reporter from the Hartford Courant. I talked with him for a while.

I arrived at my church at the same time as a well-dressed young man who was very distressed. He knelt in prayer in the front pew, but answered his cell phone several times. Later my sister Jane told me that she had seen the same thing, people answering their phones in church. I stayed through the noon service. A friend of mine, Rosemary, was there. She is one of the finest, most loving people I have ever met. Sometimes I give a little money to the homeless. Rosemary buys a meal and then sits on a bench and eats with them. Rosemary has MS. She hugged me and sobbed and I just held her, as she cried, until she touched my check with the gentlest kiss.

I came home and stopped and talked for awhile with our concierge who is a minister as well. Then on the elevator the thought came that I must call my cousin.... She is in very early recovery from addiction. Her husband, ..., works in the Pentagon. As [she]detoxed, she became angry with everyone including Bonnie except me for some reason. There was a message on our machine. [My cousin] had called before the Pentagon was hit to talk with Bonnie because she was so afraid. I reached her after a few tries. [Her husband] was safe, working from an alternate location.

Each Tuesday evening for the past few months, I have been marching with other Christians to carry a message of peace and love into our citys neighborhoods afflicted by drug related violence. Last night we assembled at the parking lot of Asylum Hill. Gary Miller joined us and offered prayer. An associate minister named Sarah has been with us every week and Beth has joined us several times. We marched to, then around, Sigorney Park. We formed a circle, lit candles and prayed. Some of the black ministers used the opportunity to preach the need to be saved. Its not my theology. It makes me uncomfortable. On the way back, we sang for the first time. First, We Shall Overcome. Then I somehow was leading the group in Amazing Grace. The only problem is, with my sarcoid, I cant walk and sing well at the same time. Back at the AHCC (I never noticed the initials before) parking lot there was more prayer. I took the microphone to share my thoughts about addiction and terrorism that they both fill their victims with fear, but that my recovery began when God lifted my fear. Jesus said, Fear is useless, what is needed is hope. I wept and offered prayer for hope for Hartford and New York and Kabul.

Today I worked very hard. We have fallen behind on our project. I was supposed to take Friday off, but since Bonnie won't be here anyway Im going to work. At noon, I went to the Catholic Book Store, where my small community prays each Wednesday. It was our first meeting of the new year. Our priest, Ed McLean, takes the summers off, mostly to lead retreats. Usually coming together again in September is such a joyous day. As Ed said today we had that joy but it was just below the surface of our grieve. Ed and Michelle, his associate, had chosen scriptures very carefully and after Mass copies were passed out.

I left work a little after eight tonight. I missed the bus, but it was a beautiful night so I didnt mind walking. In front of the Federal Court House a committed group stood, with candles, in a circle praying for peace everywhere. Among them were Catholic Workers, Quakers, and Islamic believers. I stood just outside the circle. From time to time, a person would step into the circle to share or pray. I remembered the paper in my pocket, so I entered the circle and said, I was just walking by, on my way home, but I had this in my pocket and I read:

Bless those who persecute you: never curse them, bless them. Rejoice with those who rejoice and be sad with those in sorrow. Treat everyone with equal kindness; never be condescending but make real friends with the poor. Do not allow yourself to become self-satisfied. Never repay evil with evil but let everyone see that you are interested only in the highest ideals. Do all you can to live at peace with everyone. Never try to get revenge; leave that, my friends, to Gods anger. As scripture says: Vengeance is mine I will pay them back, the Lord promises. But there is more: IF your enemy is hungry, you should give him food, and if he is thirsty, let him drink. Resist evil and conquer it with good.
			Romans 12:14-21

A television reporter asked for an interview. They didnt use it. I talked with a few of the people and came home.

<text>I live in Texas yet I remember 9/11/01 as if it happened yesterday. I am 23 years old, and was in college on the day our country was changed forever. It started as a normal day for me. I woke up, and staying in a dorm, I tried to be quiet so that I wouldn't wake my room mate. I actually had no idea what had happened until I reached my first class. I got there a bit early, and my teacher had not yet made it. Some of my friends and fellow classmates were there though and they began to explain that a plane had hit the world trade center. I thought "Maybe it was an accident," but as other students came in there was more news, another plane had hit the second tower. It could be a terrorist act some said, and yet I still held hope that it was just an awful accident. My teacher came into class and we all became quiet. He took roll and I began to wish class would end so that I could find out for myself what was going on. I wanted to know what was happening. It all felt unreal to me at that moment, maybe because I had heard it all second hand, I hadn't seen the pictures on the tv screen for myself yet. Our teacher explained that there were more planes missing, and one student asked if we could be excused for the day. Our teacher agreed, and I rushed back to my dorm. My room mate had just woken up and I told her what was happening as I reached to turn on the tv. I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched the first of the towers collapse, and at first I thought it was all a simulation, that the newscaster would return and say that is what "could happen," but no it was real, and remember sinking to my chair as I realised what I had just witnessed. My second shock came when the reporter on the screen said that what I had just seen was prerecorded, and moments later I watched live as the second tower fell.
Even more unbelieveable events happened that day at the Pentagon and a plane crash in Pennsylvania. I watched the news as often as I could during that day, most of it is muddled in my mind now. What I have just written is what I remember most vividly about 9/11/01, and I know these memories will stay with me forever.
2930 people have been confirmed dead as of today, the one year anniversary of 9/11 yet I feel that all Americans are victims. I still remember the fear of that day and there is always a worry in the back of my mind that something else may happen. My heart goes out to all of those who lost someone. God bless you all. </text>

<text>I was teaching at a small school in northern Maine and happened to take a break and stopped in the kitchen. Our cook told us that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. We were told not to say anything to the children. We all looked at each other with disbelief; this couldn't have happened! Whenever we had a break that day, we were glued to the TV set.

We all went home that afternoon in shock. I know that I hugged my husband and sons and thought about the thousands of families that were never going to be able to do that again.

When the children came back the next day, there were many questions which we answered to the best of our ability. But many of them went unanswered.

A year later, we planted and dedicated two trees and had a short ceremony on the school grounds in memory of those who died.

At first I didnt know what to think. The rest of that day in school we watched the news and then the sencond plane hit, and then when it seemed like it couldn't get any worse it did. The two towers collapsed. But the funny thing was just a week and a half before that i was inNew York City and no one realy even took notice toi the towers and then a when they fell it seemed like everyone finally realized how important they were to us. I guess you never realy how much you need something untill its gone.</text>

<text>From the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, New York City. I was driving with other drivers who work for Auto Sunroof of Larchmont under contract to pick up Lincoln vehicles on display at the Stock Exchange on Wall St.in Manhattan. When over the Nextel system my son-in-law Tony Spadaccini, the Vice-President called his brother Dino and said that a plane had just hit a WTC building. I noticed some smoke from the direction of the WTC and I thought that it was a fairly good column of smoke to be seen from the Parkway. We continued toward the Triboro Bridge when Tony once again came the cell and told his brother that a second plane hit the tower. I then realized that this was not a random accident. Yet we continued to approach the bridge. In about five minutes Tony came on the Nextel and said, "Dino how far are you from the bridge?". Dino answered, "Five minutes". A short time later Tony came on again and said, "Dino, Come on back they're going to lock down the City". With that we got off the next exit and headed in the opposite direction toward the Whitestone Bridge. We made it to The Bronx side just before they shut it down. I owe my life to my son-in-law because I am a retired Captain from the FDNY and the WTC is just two blocks from the Exchange. I know that if I got to the scene I would have gone to the Eng.10/Lad.10 firehouse on Liberty Street, across that street from the WTC, suited up for fire duty, joined the Brothers and died with them. But God had other plans and by His grace I here today.</text>
