He asked the teachers to turn on the t.v. When we did we saw the buildings lying on the ground in big piles. We also saw all the people running for their lives. The people who didnt make it were covered with a tarp looking covering. There were ambulances and police cars everywhere. All day this continued. When i got home my family, of coarse, had been watching this tradic event also. That night our church had a serimonial event and we went to that. They showed everything over and everyone prayed. My life hasnt really changed that much except that im more careful and alot more respectful to my country. I think everyone should remember how our country came together. After everything calmed down you could notice a differance in the way everyone acted. I didn't know anything about it. i thought the mornig was peaceful until i got to school. When i walked into my classroom one of my friends had told me,about the attack on the buildings i was shaken abuot the idea so i told him that is not true. So we went to the libary to watch it on CNN.I thought it was a movie, i could't beleive it. The more i heard about it the more i believed it. Then I heard. The world stopped. I realized that nothing could ever compare to this. It took me forever to get home after school, which is a long story. Once I was there I sat myself in front of the TV and stayed there all night and the rest of the next day. I thought that I would never be able to have a normal day again. My life has changed in small ways. I look at the world in a different way. I can think back to a time when I was much younger. I asked my mother what terrorism was. I had heard about it on the news. That day all squabbles were put aside and it was just one AMERICAN helping another AMERICAN to get throught the pain that they didn't yet know how to express. But the next day I got one for my house, and one for every car in my driveway. The one on my house has yet to come down. Getting a flag was something that was really important to me. It was a kind of therapy. I made a shirt showing my respect and also bought two that donated towards relief efforts. It made me feel a sensational amount of pride. Another teacher from the school came into my classroom and said that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers. Everyone was in shock immediately, and when the television was turned on, it hurt to see the black smoke billowing from the first tower. I went on to third period and saw the second plane hit the other tower. It was very shocking to see this happen to our great nation. People are still morning over the deaths of loved ones that they lost on September 11th. It is sad to see the children that were born on September 11th and never got to see their mom or dad. On Septemeber 11th, my family and I put the American flag on our flagpole in remembrance of the events that occured that day. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. Got to work around 8:15 am, put some coffee up and then toasted an English muffin. Back at my desk (We were on the 19th floor of 55 Broad Street, the back of our office had a great view of the towers from about a block away) at about 8:36 I heard what sounded like a large thunderclap. I thought to myself that it's beautiful outside when I came in, where did the thunder come from. I looked out my office window, which was on the opposite side of our building not facing the towers, and I saw what looked like ash and burning papers flying through the air along with a lot of smoke. I turned on my computer to Excite.com and it said that a plane had just struck the trade center. I yelled it out in the middle of our office and no one believed me. So I ran to the back of our office where we had a door that led out to a balcony where folks smoked when the wanted to, it had a great close up view of both towers. When I open the door a lot of smoke and debris was in the air and when it cleared for a second I saw all the flames. I immediately tried to close the door but people in the office came to the back because they smelled all the smoke. We all went on the balcony and watched what was unfolding. Me and a few of the guys were discussing that it must have been a private plane and that since it was restricted air space to begin with, the pilot must have had a heart attack or something. We were watching as people began jumping out of the building, we saw a couple holding hands plunge 75 or so stories to their end. It was like it wasn't really happening, like a surreal movie. All of a sudden we began to hear what sounded like a freight train going over our building. It looked more like a missile until the last second when the plane banked on its side and we saw the two wings as it plunged right into the 2nd tower. The building swayed on impact and we felt the heat and the blast shock like it was a slap in the face. At that point everyone knew it was a terrorist attack. A few of us knew it was Bin Laden because we always talked about all the crap he did to us like the USS Cole and the embassies in Africa. We knew a TV news crew assassinated the leader of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan with a bomb in the camera the day before. It was the prelude to this offensive attack. After standing frozen solid in disbelief at was unfolding in front of us for what felt like eternity, but really only a minute, we ran to our phones to call loved ones and the phones were dead. The Verizon infrastructure was located in the WTC. We then tried our cell phones. Some were lucky to get through; others like me had a hard time. (I ditched Omnipoint after that) We turned on the radio and heard that there were 7-10 planes still unaccounted for, and then one hit the Pentagon, then we heard of the one smashing into a field in Shanksville Pa. While this is going on a close friend of mine reached our office and was covered head to toe in blood. She looked as if she dipped herself in a blood pool. Her hair was matted in it. She was crying hysterically and shaking. I was a Paramedic in the Army, so I went to her and checked her for any wounds, she was totally uninjured... not a scratch... I asked her what had happened and she told me she just came out of 5WTC (she took the PATH train to work and it lets out under the WTC) and was crossing the street when the first plane struck, she saw all the falling debris coming down and ran to a nearby mens clothing store, Brooks Brothers. A lady who was running just behind her was hit with falling glass and was cut in half just a foot or so from my friend. The blood belonged to that lady. While I was talking to her the first building began to fall. Our building shook violently like an earthquake, tiles came falling down from the ceiling and lights flickered and glass doors smashed. We didn't know if that building was falling on ours, thank God for us, it just imploded and collapsed straight down on its axis. A half hour later it was a repeat as the 2nd building fell. It was at that point we knew that there must have been unprecedented carnage there. We thought at least 20-30 thousand dead. Thankfully we were wrong and not for the heroism of our fire fighters and policemen and emergency services it would have been a whole lot worse. After that we heard an announcement on the building PA that they were evacuating the building to the basement. Some went, a few friends and me refused. We had water, food, telephones here, it is nothing but a trap down there I said. If the building fell, being under it wouldn't help much anyway. At around 11:45 me and a friend Peter Mule who was a Sr. Account Manager with RCG decided we were going to get out of there and make our way home. We took towels and soaked them and made our way down 19 flights to the lobby and tried to go out the front way. A police officer ordered us to get back in the building. We then went out the service entrance and the coast was clear except that it was like nuclear winter. It was like a dust storm in the middle of the Sahara but the dust was a grayish pink with burning embers. Walking in it was like trying to walk through 6-8 inches of snow... As we made it to Water Street we can see cars, buses, trucks, with there doors open, engines still running and abandoned. There was a city bus lying on its side, which must have turned over after jumping a curb. At that point I saw a lady walking aimlessly saying that we are all breathing in the remains of the dead. (I said, that's more info than I need to know at this point, it was sickening) It was like a mass refugee exodus to and over the Brooklyn Bridge. (I had a co-worker who actually jumped into the east river andtried to swin across to Brooklyn, was picked up by a passing ferryboat)) As we walked across the bridge we saw 2 fighter jets coming from afar aimed right at the Bridge, from a distance we couldnt tell who's they were. It was obvious quickly that they were ours. I got over the bridge and walked through the courts area to a neighborhood, which is considered an Arab neighborhood. The Arabs were literally dancing in the streets, cars with flags were streaming down Atlantic and 4th Avenues yelling "Death to America" and lots of other crap. Women were clapping and making strange sounds with their mouths in the streets... There was a huge police presence but they just stood there with an anger you couldn't believe on their faces. They wanted to shoot them. You could see it in their eyes. I had ducked into a pizzeria to hide while my brother made his way there by car to pick me up. The subways were evacuated and not running. I lost 17 friends, some cops and firemen, some former colleagues, and my doctors son. I went to 5-6 funeral/memorial services but couldn't do any more. It was just too excruciating. The office opened the following Monday. The air downtown was a putrid mix of burning plastic/fiberglass and rubber and the stench of death. I had a bad cough from the moment I got off the M-train Broad Street subway stop until I reached home every night for the first 3 months. It will only happen again if we again have an administration that believes that appeasement is the best form of diplomacy. I don't believe war is either. I was always very cognizant of my surroundings but now I live by the saying... "Constant Vigilance" As citizens we have to partner with our protective services in making sure that terrorist attacks never happen again on American soil. There will always be some who hate the American way of life so to say that the war on terror will be unconditionally won like say WW2 is very naive. I just hope the threat of terrorism subsides so my children will never have to face a day like September 11th 2001 in their lifetime. I think what should be remembered is the the firemen and policemen who raced into those buildings while others were racing out. The supreme sacrifice they made to help to save thousands of lives should be forever remembered. Also, those who fought with the hijackers about flight 93 which fell in a field in Shanksville PA so that thousands today could live. I may travel on vacations throughout the world and appreciate and enjoy other countries cultures but when I get into Kennedy Airport and go through customs and the inspector asks me "what would you like to declare", I always say with a smile.. We have successfully saved ourselves from finacial disaster, and are working on helping countless people to find new jobs while they rebuild the Twin Towers on GroundZero. I remember that I was in the media center of my school, East Grand Rapids Middle School, when I looked up from reading video game magazines and glanced at the T.V. There was a replay of the first and second planes colliding into the towers, causing them both to burst into flames, crumble and fall. It was around 10:00. I had no idea that the center of our economy had almost been obliterated, while I had been blissfully unaware for the past hour! I couldn't believe it! I showed my partner, Alex, the horrible tragedy before our eyes, and he had almost the same reaction. A week later, I found out the name of the man who was behind the plane crashes. Osama bin Laden. I, as well as many other Americans, share an inner loathing for him, and hope that soon, he will meet his demise, preferrably at the hands of a Navy Seal. My best friend, Nathan and I have drawn insulting cartoons of him ever since. In our drawings, he always meets some horrid fate. But, it's more than he deserves. I walked into the living room and mumbled, "Good morn... oh my God." I had walked out right as a plane hit the second tower. The entire morning while I was getting ready and the trip to school I spent with my face glued to the TV or hanging on every word of the radio announcer. When I got to school, classes were cancelled and we had a school meeting. We tried to get a live feed from msnbc.com up on the big projector, but the servers were full.As we dispersed into our counselor groups, teachers and students alike could be seen crying in the hallways. We watching as the buildings slowly burned and twisted until the massive structures finally crumbled into the cloak of dust blanketing Manhattan. The constant reruns of the planes hitting the buildings from every possible angle and the people jumping from a hundred stories up were a constant reminder of the devastation. I left home after the two planes hit the Towers, so I knew this wasn't going to be a normal day. When I got to the FAA I heard and saw on the TV monitors in the FAA lobby obout the Pentagon. The FAA evacuted the building and a crowd of people gathered on the grassy lawn at the back of the building. I was impressed at the composure and sense of serious pupose that everyone had that day. A very few people seemed to be distraught and on the edge, but all around them were full of consolling words so no one lost it. Out on the lawn we could hear explosions and see smoke at the Pentagon and is seemed that more planes were coming down. We also had a view of the US Congress and I could picture the Congress blowing up just I had seen the Towers do so an hour before on TV. With reports of a number of unaccounted for planes still in the air we were all tense...not for our lives, but out of fear of seeing the symbol of our country shattered to bits. When we heard on radio about the plane going down in PA, I knew that it was targeted for the Congress. God Bless the courages people on that plane. I put my life in perspective: that its survival is less important than the preservation of American Ideals and the American Nation. Truly, it is the first time that I can truly say "I would die for that...I would die for my country." I am of the Vietnam generation, and I surely could never feel I would be willing to die for my county in that war...though I always honer and respect those that did. That evil does exist in the world and the only way to resist it is to be strong: not just militarily, but strong in values, purpose, and unified... We need to continue to improve on America so that no one can say that the American Nation benefits only some. The American flag was used in divisive ways on both sides during the Vietnam War. Until 9/11 I could not get over that and was not into flag displaying...that was someting the WWII generation did (and I did before Vietnam). Now we all have the flag back again. I was so moved by the spontaneous display of flags everywhere after 9/11. It kept up my spirits and symbolized our unit. Well, it was about 6:30 am PDT when I was woken up by my Fiance tell me to turn the TV on, I turned on the TV and changed the channel to CNN. I saw the pictures and thought it was a horrific dream. Unfortunetly it wasn't. The pictures still play out in my mind like if I am watching it right now. Because of the advent of the Internet and because of the advent of live TV, my family and I were able to witness the horrific events of 9-11-01 that was happening in New York City, Washington D.C. and in Pennslyvaina. This was my pearl harbor and until the day I pass I will always remember that day with such clairity and emotion that I pray that there is NEVER a respeat of this magnituded ever again. I was preaching at our Presbytery's quarterly meeting, "ironically" I preached on meeting diversity with love and understanding. At the conclusion of the service we were informed of the first crash. Needless to say, we adojourned to return home to our churches to open them up to our communities for prayer and for comfort. Many of us first collected our children. It was important to hold them close not knowing what might happen in the hours to come. Terrorism was not new to me as I have lived overseas where bombs had been a constant worry and threat. Yet, I never dreamed it would occur "at home" in such a dramatic way. My husband is a former New Yorker and we are both Red Cross disaster workers. We are more aware of the dangers which face us. We are trying to be better prepared for the unexpected - disasters of any kind - natural or human caused. I was living in Sacramento, California attending California State University, Sacramento on September 11, 2001. The night before, I did something unusual: I turned the ringer off on my phone. When I woke up for class the next morning, I continued to do things out of the ordinary; I did not turn on the tv or my computer to catch the morning news like I did normally. I just grabbed my stuff and headed for the bus stop. During the half hour ride to school, I did not hear any other passenger talking about what happened, so I was still clueless. When the bus arrived at campus, I saw what seemed like the whole student body, gathered at the front of the campus. I saw police directing the traffic jam. I was wondering what was going on. I started walking pass the crowd towards the middle of the campus. I decided to stop someone to ask. When I asked a girl what was going on, she replied that classes were cancelled due to what happened in New York and Washington D.C. and walked away. I thanked the girl silently for leaving me just as clueless as I was before I stopped her. I walked back to the front of the school, to the bus stop, to go back home and while standing there, that is when a more informative student advised me of what happened. She told me that the Twin Towers fell. "What do you mean they fell," I thought to myself. "What do you mean planes crashed into the buildings?" I sat on the bus in shock, trying to understand. When I got home, I turned on my tv and saw for myself. I sat there in total disbelief. I picked up the phone to call my mother, when I heard the beep on my phone that lets me know I have a message. It was my mother, calling just a few minutes after the first plane crashed into the tower. Her voice was filled with fear as she screamed into my phone that the world was ending, that we were being attacked. I wish that I never turned the ringer off. For the rest of the day, I sat glued in front of my tv set like many Americans. I sat there, watching, trying to understand, wanting answers. I don't remember if I went to class the next day. September 11, 2001 Krista Metzger September 11th, in my mind, will always remain a terrible day for America, but I think that we, as a nation, have gotten stronger as a result of what happened. On the morning of September 11th, I had a dentist appointment at 9:30, so I wasnt at school. At 8:30, I was putting on my tennis shoes, and every now and then I would glance at the T.V., where Good Morning America was on. At 8:46, the broadcast was interrupted, and Diane Sawyer said that a plane had hit Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. They didnt have any information at the time of what had really happened but there was fire coming out of the building. I didnt think much of any thing about it because things happen every day like a plane crash, so I put it out of my mind. I stopped watching T.V. and went upstairs to brush my teeth and to tell my mom and sister to hurry up. When we came back downstairs about 10 minutes later they were showing the video of another plane hitting a WTC tower. Then we heard the announcement that they suspected that it was a terrorist attack, and my heart jumped. I didnt think any thing like that could happen to America. We listened to the radio broadcasts all the way down Versailles Road to the dentists office, and heard it in the waiting room and the whole time I was getting my teeth cleaned. The nurse said that she needed to call her cousin because she worked in the WTC, and she hoped she was all right. On the way home we stopped at McDonalds and got some milk shakes, where we heard on the radio that 2 more planes were crashed, one in the Pentagon, and one more in a field in Pennsylvania. Then we made our way back to Versailles, to go to school. I really didnt think that anyone at school would have heard of what had happened, and I expected every thing to be as usual. When I got in third block, I sat down and everyone was strangely quiet, I figured they had just gotten into trouble or something. Then I told my friend that I was scared because of the events that had happened that morning, and he said Yeah, this is the first block we havent watched it. I was anxious turn on the T.V. and watch history happen, but we didnt watch it the rest of the day. I felt like the teachers were depriving us of not knowing how and why this happened. As soon as we got home from school the TV was on and so was the president, talking about the days events. Over the next few days I cant remember anything else memorable to happen except that I had called my uncle and I talked to him for like 2 hours about the terrorists attacks and how I didnt think another one would happen, and he agreed. I remember lots of people coming on the TV and describing people that were MIA. My mom, who works at Central Baptist Hospital, said that the hospital was put on red alert, and was where over-flow victims would go from New York. Six months later, life had gone on as if nothing had ever happened. Every now and then youd hear things about how they had found some pieces of people in the rubble, but nothing to serious about Osama Bin Laden. My youth group took a trip to New York on March 5-10. I thought it would be a good experience to see the history of our country and where it happened. So I went and saw the big hole where the World Trade Center Towers used to stand. There were flags all over the city and people were acting nice to everyone, and the streets were a lot cleaner then you would expect. We saw memorials all down Fulton Street, and I heard a lady comment on how she would rather not have everyone standing there gawking at the World Trade Center, it makes it hard to mourn. As I thought about that statement, I know that she was right, and that she probably lost someone. New York City had constructed several memorials to honor the hard-hats, and those who had died. The events that happened on 9-11-01 will always go down in history about the day America grew into a nation. I know that it was a terrible thing, but a very good thing come out of it, too. I was at a local hospital waiting to go in to get a mammogram. I was watching the news in the breaking story in the waiting room. I saw the first plane hit and then I was called back. WHen I came back into the waiting area the second plane hit. I saw this as it happened. I couldn't believe it. I thought surely this must be a weird accident. I never dreamed that it was a terrorist attack. I thought of my husband who was away in Arkansas on an interview. I tried and tried to reach him. I knew he was safe but I wanted to speak personally with him and let him know what was going on. I thought of our children who were at school knowing they were safe. I left the hospital and went to the YMCA to workout. It was so strange . Every T. V. in there had the same thing on it. I remember exactly who was in there with me that day. We spoke and shared how hard it was to believe that this was happening in our country. I also thought of my best friend who lived in Va. close to D. C. Her husband works in Fairfax. I reached her by phone as she was sitting in the dentist's chair. They were okay.I wanted to be with the ones I loved. I heard of many people going to pick up their children. I did not do this. I felt that my kids were safe. THere were a lot of people in our area of W. V. worried because we have so many chemical plants around us. I really wasn't .Why would any terrorist want to come to little old W. V.? My husband had to drive 14 straight hours home due to the airports being closed. He arrived home around 4:30 in the morning. On September 11,2001 when the planes crashed into the twin woters and all the destruction was going on I was in my second hur Desktop Publishing class. When I walked in the room the t.v waso n and the teacher was crying. We all sad down and watched the news all hour. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? My blessings go out to the people who lost loved ones in this tragic disaster. NMAH Story NMAH Story: Story How did you witness history on September 11th? Share your experience. On the day of September 11th, I woke up at the usual time of 7:00 A.M. (Pacific time) to get ready to go to University High School. As I arrived to my class, i saw a television that displayed the local news. At first, I thought that the Davis Monthan Air Force base was struck by a plane because the picture wasn't so clear and my teacher turned off the television to teach. For the rest of the school day, I did not understand what was happening in New York or any where else in the world. As soon as I arrived back home, my curiosity immediately told me to turn on the television. I watched and soaked the information in, learning about the fall of the mighty Twin Towers and the identity of Osama bin Laden. I watched the news and completed my homework at the same time, and I watched Dan Rather talk all night long. And the thing I remember the most was George W. Bush giving a speech, which seemed strangely alike to Ronald Reagan's speech immediately after the space shuttle Challenger blew up in front of so many children. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. My life has changed, although not dramatically. None of my relatives were even near the devastated areas. I learned that I am not safe in the world, even with the 300 trillion dollars that we spend on defense each year. I learned who Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda terrorist group were. After 9/11, whenever I want to fly back to China, I must leave two to three hours ahead of departure to pass the dramatically increased security, and be "randomly" singled out for inspection. One time, when I was asked to be checked, I saw that all of the people in this "randomly" selected group were of another ethnicity that is not white. I realized that these people were using racial prejudice to conduct their jobs, and this made me think, "Don't they know that terrorists probably already has people who are actually American citizens and willing to hijack or blowup a plane?" However, after watching some more news, especially of the Shoebomber incident, I learned that some Americans were actually randomly selected while the Shoebomber got on the plane with no problem at all. But the incidents of 9/11 and events relating to that day gave me multiple perspectives on life. I saw through a typical Middle Easterner's eyes where they would only obtain one side of a story that the government gave out and that their culture was far different from ours. I saw through a typical American's eyes, who wants to kill Osama and other terrorists. Yet, some went as far as to kill some people of Middle Eastern descent, which gave me a message that without tolerance, a person can do really self-centered and idiotic things. Finally, I saw through the eyes of a neutral person, someone from China, or Russia, or even Great Britain, who viewed the actions we took as too radical. But they do not understand the patriotism that Americans feel, the pride that Americans have, and the recklessness of our young country. Yet I still believe the actions President Bush took were justified, and bringing Osama to justice would bring peace to those who lost family members. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that the sacrifices of the brave souls of the firefighters and police officers should be remembered. I think that everybody's life who perished on 9/11 because of the attacks should be remembered. I think that the name of Osama bin Laden and his terrorist group should be remembered, to remind us who did it. Most importantly, the Twin Towers that stood for the United State's might in the world economy, and the Pentagon that stood for the US's military superiority should be remembered. NMAH Story: Flag Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? No, I did not fly an American flag, since I'm really not an American yet. But, I did wear a flag pin on my tuxedo jacket to honor those who have died while playing at a concert. My feelings have not changed about the flag. I believe it is a symbol of freedom that some dislikes (such as religous extremists or terrorists). It stands for the United States, and it has inspirationed men who fought for freedom from the British in the American Revolution.
