On September 11, I did not so much see what happen, but experiences it all the same and my colleagues at work and I were just as much a part of it. Our Company had scheduled a National Meeting at our headquarters here on the west coast near Los Angeles. The morning of September 11th we had approximately 50-60 of our salespeople coming in from across the country that day for the meeting. Once we arrived that morning it fell to us, three senior adminstrators to tract down all our team and make sure none were on those planes and account for everyone. None ended up being on those planes that went down but it was scary and a close call, one of the salesman was scheduled for one of the flights that crashed and ended up changing his flight at the last minute. And due to the planes being grounded we had people all over the country. Plus all of them trying to get back home quickly to their families. We had people in Florida, Texas, Kansas all trying to get back to California, Maryland and Pennsylvania. And the salespeople that had come in the previous day were grounded - they all ended up renting cars and caravaning across country dropping guys off at their homes as they went, talking about making us a closer team. I know everyone says that, but these were people I only at first knew as a voice over the phone and now I had come to know them much better and closer. We should remember the people who we lost but not in sadness, as if that is the case they only died in vain, but what and how it has changed and benefitted us and our lives and the way we now live our life after what has happened. I was walking to my third period class, science and i saw my teacher and a crowd of atleast 5 other students watching the TV. It was CNN or channel 4 or something. All i saw was the twin towers both in flames. The night before I was at the Yankees game and i said to myself, "I saw those buildings last night." I was very confused and didnt know what happened. I was asking people around me they didnt really know either. Then i saw on the bottom of the TV screen it said "Highjacked Plane flies into each trade center building" I was amazed. The teacher turned off the TV and it didnt seem to be as big a deal. We had class just like any other, as I walked to 4th period their was word in the halls of the crisis. Then I heard in 4th period that the teachers were not alowed to turn on the TV's. Finally in 5th period with no knowledge of what was going on, i was called to the office to go home. I was nervous whne i was called to the office because on the way i saw many students crying. Finally my mom gave me the whole story on the car ride home. But I don't think on that day it really made a difference. I live in a small town in Georgia. I work for the Mayor's office at City Hall. I will never forget that day. I am the administrative assistant and I am usually the one who answers the phone. My mother in law called to tell me that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. She didn't know if it was just a TV hoax or if it was for real. As she was telling me and we were talking she screamed and said oh my god another plane has just hit the second building. I ask her if she was serious and if she was sure of what was going on. She said yes she was certain and for my office to find a TV and tune in quick. Our whole office piled in the City Manager's office as we watched in horror as the towers came crashing down. I just remember the emotion we all felt. I remember one lady I work with hanging her head and running out of the office in tears while another lady waited to hear from her sister in law who is in the secret service. But on the positive side it was so nice to see our community come together like it did. We had strangers calling us just to make sure that we were okay and to make sure we had heard the news and just to send there support to us. Our small town rallied together to have a blood drive and a memorial service. Unlike some stories I have heard I think that feeling of unity still remains in our town. But like so many others I can't bear to turn my TV on today and watch the horrific even again. Tonight my family will attend a memorial service at our church to remember and be thankful to still all be alive and together. I was at home and turned on the t.v. at 8:45 a.m. I saw the newscast with the smoke coming from the tower. At that time the announcers were not sure if it was just a fire or what. Almost immediately the second tower was hit by an airplane. I watched and listened in horror at this sight as the newscasters and folks nationwide did the same. On September 11, I was at home recovering from cancer surgery. On July 31, I had my left lung removed and had struggled to recover physically and emotionally from the diagnosis and surgery. In the days to come I realized that even though I had cancer, I was still here, and there were hundreds of my earthly sisters and brothers who would never get a moment to contemplate their existence. It helped me put my diagnosis in perspective - that I should just take care of each day to the best of my ability and continue to be a loving, compassionate member of my family and society for whatever precious time I should have left on earth. Minutes after the first plane hit, my dad ran up to my room to allert me of the situation. My dad tends to joke a lot, and at the time, I didn't really even know what the World Trade Center was. So I brushed it off as a simple joke. Then he told me to turn on the television. I was shocked as i saw the horror unfold on my screen. My friend, Kevin Kuhar, ran up to me and told me that two planes crashed into the Twin Towers. I was shocked and very confused. At first, I didn't want to believe it since on of my cousins work accross from the Twin Towers. He told my I would see it at Geography class. My cousin, was working at a building accross from the Twin Towers. She was staring and admiring them, like she did every morning. Then the first plane came out of nowhere and crashed into the side of the tower. She immediately evacuated the building and left for home. She did not see the second plane hit the towers. The unity of everyone definitely should be remembered about September 11. The firefighters who were on the scene and risked their lives for everyone inside the Towers should definitely be remembered. Also, the little miracles that occured on that day. I knew on person who was supposed to be at work at the World Trade Center but was at our school for some reason. One person jumped but only broke their legs. The last miracle I know of is where the alarm didn't work for someone who was supposed to work that day. After September 11th my family flew the American flag on our car and on our house. Approximately 7 out of every ten cars you saw on the road had the American flag on their cars. We put the flag right above our garage on the afternoon of September 11th. It's been flying there ever since. My feelings about the American flag has definitely changed! Before 9/11 when we said the "Pledge of Allegiance" everyone would usually mumble it out and wonder "Why do we do this every day. This is a waster of 2 minutes of education we could be getting."(2 minutes may not seem like a lot. But when you add the 2 minutes up to 180 days a year for eight years, that's a lot of education you are missing.) This story is just how I experienced that terrible day. I am a nurse. I was working with a patient and all of a sudden another employee came into the room and told me that an airplane had just hit the WTC. At first, I didnt believe her so I continued on with patient care. Then when I came out of the room, the same employee told me that another plane had hit the other building. I was in disbelief,as I listened to the radio broadcast. Worried about what may be coming next. Then the radio broadcasted that another plane had crashed into the Pentagon. I became very afraid. I wanted to go home and be with my family at that point, because I was very afraid that if events continued I may not get a chance to see them again, but couldnt do that. I needed to continue caring for my patients the best that I could. When I went home,the first thing I did was turn on a news channel.As I sat there watching the horrific details, tears welled up in my eyes as I thought about all the victims that had probably died a horrific death, and what their families must be going through. After watching all the events, my fear turned into anger. How dare anyone do this to the USA and its people. Whom ever is responsible will pay the ultimate price. On September 11, 2001 I was sitting in Spanish class, eagerly awaiting the bell to sound so I could go to my next class. Five minutes before the bell sounded, our principal, Mr. Healey, came on over the PA and told the entire school that he had an extremely important announcement The first thought that popped into my head was that someone had brought a gun or other weapon to school; the gravity in Mr. Healey's voice told me that something was not right. He then told us that an airplane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers (World Trade Center). I was in shock. The bell rang and I went to my next class- band. There, Mr. Carnohan let us listen to the radio, where we learned about the second Twin Tower and the Pentagon being hit. Towards the end of class we learned about the heroes who diverted one plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. I had to call my mom. She works at Coast Guard Headquarters, right next to the Pentagon. Was she hurt? I tried calling on my cell phone, but "all circuits were busy." I was so afraid. I left school that day, eager to get home as soon as possible. But when I got into the parking lot, I found that I had left my lights on, so my car was dead. September 11 was the only day I have ever left my lights on... My parents now both work under the Department of Homeland Defense instead of the Department of Transportation. For the first few months after September 11, my parents wouldn't let me go out to crowded places such as King's Dominion or Washington DC. But as the year has come full circle, I realize, like President Bush, that we cannot let the events, however horrible, rule our lives. We are Americans. United we stand. I, like so many other Americans, put a flag sticker on my car to show my pride for America. I flew a flag outside my house. That sticker is still on my car and that flag is still flying. Pre-September 11, the flag always had the connotation of independence for me- the Fourth of July, most prominantly. Now, I think of the flag in terms of unity. The image of people on the streets, with joined hands, candles lit, and flags flying is burned into my memory forever. Ironically, I believe that independence is stressed more now than ever. Our independence from letting terrorism rule our lives is extremely important. United We Stand. But our flag not only shows our unity- it shows our pride, our steadfastness, our hope that justice will prevail, and por supuesto- our independence. She was only 3 months old. One of my closest friends called me. She told me to turn the tv on. I could hear all the sirens in the background noise on her phone. I woke up and went to school like I did every other day. In first block we had been working on a poetry unit and the 11th was when our projects were due. We were all very relaxed and the day was going very well. The bell rang and we all got up and were ready for our next class. As I was walking through the hall everything seemed normal until I heard someone yelling, we got bombed, we got bombed. I thought they were kidding but when I walked into my second block class it felt like the world around me had come crashing down. My heart dropped at the sight of the two world trade centers in flames. I quickly read the bottom of the screen to find that commercial airplanes had hit both trade centers. It was thought that terrorists were the culprits. As the tardy bell rang our teacher, Mrs. Carner, was in a panic. She came in, took role and quickly scurried out of the room again. As my whole class sat in the same room I felt as if I were alone. I didnt know why anyone would want to do this. Soon we all learned that hijackers had taken over the planes, killed the pilots and drove them into the trade centers. Soon Mrs. Carner came back into the room and she seemed much calmer and more relaxed. Then, she told us she had gotten so upset because her sister was on a trip to New York and she didnt know which day she was supposed to visit the trade centers. She had found out that her sister had planned to visit them on Thursday. After a while she turned off the TV and tried to make us write down our vocabulary words. I wasnt interested in anything except what was going on in our country. I think that everyone in my class felt the same way. My third block was social studies and I knew that Mr. Heasly would let us watch and talk about the attacks the whole third block. I was glad that he was my teacher because he knew a lot about what was going on and why the terrorists night have done this. As we watched the coverage in that class it showed the tape of afghan people dancing with joy that our country got hit. During about the middle of the class the first building started to crumble. It looked like it was make of sand, you would have never imagined that there was steal and metal among the debree. In fourth block we werent aloud to watch the coverage, we had to do our work. I was a little upset because I knew at the time that 9-11 would be a day I would remember forever. When I went home I talked with my Mom about the attacks. We were both very upset and were worried for the families and friends of all those injured or killed. I was supposed to have a soccer game but all sporting events were cancelled. The night was somber and I prayed for many things that night. September 11th brought our country together and it will eventually tear terrorism apart. The terrorists will get re-payed and they will be sorry. The perfect motto for our country is United we stand, divided we fall. I was 15 and my parents had started giving me freedom and allowed me to take the bus from my hometown in northern NJ to the city. It was my true getaway. I loved every moment of walking through the city streets and decided this was where I would spend my life. I go to boarding school in New Hampshire and planned to drive back to school on the 11th. I wanted to end the summer with a kick so I got tickets for a Yankees vs. Red Sox game on Sept 10 with my sister. We planned to stay with a close family friend in her apartment uptown after the game and take the bus home the next morning and drive to school fromthere. The night of the anxiously awaited Yankees game finally came, but it was rained out. I'd waited all summer to see this game and the skies had to cloud and thunder. I woke up early the next morning and the skies had miraculously cleared. Stepping outside around 8:15 I inhaled the unusually warm morning air and gazed at the birds flying so freely against the backdrop of the crystal blue sky. We said goodbye to our friend and headed downtown toward Port Authority where we would take the bus home. We reached Port Authority in about half an hour and had breakfast in the station. Being underground in the subway when the first plane hit, we had no idea of the horror happening above ground. We proceeded to wait for the bus near the gate. For some reason I picked up a pay phone to find it wasn't working. I tried the entire row, but strangely none worked. A strange feeling came over me then. As we boarded the bus, my cell phone rang. The caller ID read my home number. "Hi dad, we're fine don't worry." I said picking up the phone. "Something's happened." he said with his voice wavering in a tone unlike any other i'd heard from his mouth. My phone started cracking on me at that point and his voice started breaking up. "Disaster...p-ane....twin towers" Static....silence.... I tried calling back, but it was useless. I initially imagined some pilot in a tiny Cessna had lost control and crashed into the towers. The thought of terrorists and the enormity of the situation didn't immediately strike me. The bus pulled out of the station onto the ramp. It must have been around 9:25 or 9:30. As I looked toward the southward direction, the once crystal blue sky was marred by a giant grayish black cloud hovering ominously over lower Manhattan. A sudden queasiness seized me as I tried to connect everthing. My eyes didn't immediately register the image in front of me as real. We approached the Lincoln Tunnel and stood with several buses ahead for a little while. Passengers on the bus murmurred in confusion as the looked toward the lower manhattan area. The bus didn't move. Several TV crews were set up nearby in front of the tunnel. The driver finally turned off the bus and stood up. "I'm afraid we're not leaving the city. We've been attacked by terrorists. They've flown 2 planes into the twin towers. They've shut the tunnel, they think it's next." he said gravely. I stood numbly trying to account for all the information thrown at me. Several passengers shrieked around me while others stood quietly in shock. A redheaded woman in her fifties behind me cried out she had to make a phone call. The feeling and concept of terror was completely foreign, I couldn't quite grasp the enormity of the situation. I sat down and I tried to think of people in the area. There were many, I couldn't even start to name. My mind raced with what ifs thinking of all the people inside the towers. The bus drove in circles for some time and finally headed back to the station. My sister shouted my name and snapped me out of my daze. She kept a rational head while I had gone into shock like a deer facing headlights. Her extra 5 years of maturity really saved me from losing it. The driver told everyone to stay calm and remain on the bus. My sister ignored him and dragged me off and my legs merely complied and follwed her. "Listen, we can't be anywhere like a bus station where there are mass numbers of people." The phrase mass numbers of people really hit me. How many people were there in the twin towers? How many were hurt? How many were family or friends? I followed my sister to the street away from the station. Groups of people stood on the street. The line for taxi's was about 20 people long. This scene will be ingrained in my memory forever. The loud wail of shrieking sirens of ambulences and firetrucks blended with the wail of people around me in a horrifying atmosphere of pandemonium. Flashing lights and streaks of red whizzed by me downtown into the blackness. All the other cars raced uptown, never looking back. Not a single taxi would stop. The woman next to me frantically dialed a cell phone tearfully to no avail. A pushcart vendor nearby pulled out a radio and a group gathered around and sat down on the sidewalk together. I saw two strangers hug each other, it brought about a sense of calmness among the chaos. By some miracle, a cabbie actually stopped. Although we were at the end of the line, he saw two young girls alone in this terror and felt for us. He took us back uptown to our friend's apartment. The traffic was almost standstill. All the cars sat with their windows down as words of death and destruction blared from their radios. Many like our cabbie tried to get in touch with loved ones. He was one of the lucky ones that day who was able to get in touch with his wife to tell her he was ok and that he loved her. I didn't want to think about how many people couldn't anymore. An hour or so later we finally reached our destination. After thanking our good hearted cabbie we sat in our friends apartment most of the day watching the same terrifying images over and over. It didn't fully hit me till i saw the footage. Seeing the usually calm break into tears on the air struck me. And I saw the face of the man thought to be behind the attacks. I'd never felt such a hatred build up inside of me. It also brought about a strong sadness. Friends of my friend of middle eastern descent had been severely harrassed because of their ethnicity although they were nothing like the cruel heartless cowards that committed the attacks. It all felt completely surreal. The naive bubble of security I believed surrounded my country and those I loved had been shattered. Thankfully, by some miracle everyone close to me survived. Friends and family were out of town, had slept in, all somehow avoided being in the doomed towers. I heard the heartbreaking story of our friend's friend who called his wife to tell her he loved her before he had to jump. They had been married barely a month. I left the apartmentlater that day to go to the local grocery store. It felt like the Apocalypse had come with people hoarding bottles of water and other goods. Who knew if there would be a tomorrow? I didn't sleep that night. I lay awake listening to the deep roar of the fighter planes circling manhattan. The island was a deadbolted dungeon with no way out. The pain and loss was too much for me to take and slowly hit me after time. It took me an entire week to cry. NMAH Story: Life Changed Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I've realized the world isn't the place I imagined it to be and have awoken from my naivety. The terror and pain had been too much for me to handle. My head was in NYC and with the people trying to deal with the loss. Being in school in NH away from home was difficult. I had recurring nightmares of the day and would have flashbacks whenever I heard sirens. I couldn't sleep at night and spent the days as a walking zombie. My grades dropped severely. I wanted to be able to do something to help, and do something that would heal my pain. Seeing Ground Zero in November during my Thanxgiving break was shocking. The destruction was painful to see. I had a sense of deja vu from when I was 7 and visited Hiroshima Peace Park in Japan. The rubble of Ground Zero reminded me of scenes of Hiroshima, a barren wasteland. I got the idea from there to fold 1000 cranes in memory of the victims and in hope of peace in the world. I started on my own during Thanksgiving and brought the idea back to my school. By the time I had returned home in mid December we had folded 1,500 paper cranes. I strung them and brought them back to ground zero and strung them along a fence. I recieved a letter from a man saying how deeply he was touched by seeing the cranes because he was reminded of his pacifist sister who died in the towers. It heartened me greatly to know I had helped someone who had suffered so much pain. To this day, I feel that I value even more how precious life really is. The way people came together to rise above was truly an inspiration. The crew that has cleaned up Ground Zero in such a short time was truly remarkable. I hope the future generation can learn from 9/11 about true courage and bravery, as well as how devastating hate can be. Flags were flying all around in my house at home as well as being hung in my room at school. I do feel a stronger sense of patriotism with the image of the stars and stripes, especially recalling the famous picture of the firefighters and policemen at Ground Zero raising the flag. It was September 7th, I met a new freind for the very first time, stayed for the weekend and was to fly back to the UK on September 11th. I didn't. I had finished breakfast and a waiter told me, a plane has crashed into the WTC. Good G-d, I said to my partner, some airtraffic controller will be in trouble, or as the Americans may say "get his *** kicked big time" I walked into the foyer of the hotel, and glanced at the TV . And there was the tower, on whose roof I had spent a lovely sunny afternoon only yesterday September 10th, ablaze, with smoke both, engulfing it ,and pouring from from its higher orifices. I retreated to my room and watched CNN numbly telling of the events which were happening only a few blocks away downtown. My friend called and told me to get out, called again and told me to stay put; I was supposed to vacate my room. I stayed put. And moved a few possessions in to my bag in case we had to evacuate. I kept the film from the weekend, my passport, credit cards, mobile phone, and a few personal items. After a while I thought what can do. The TV told us nothing, stay away, or give blood. Blood thats it, thats what I will do. So I joined, and rejoined blood queues. and went back the next day. I went to the British Embassy offering help, they took my details, probably the thousandth of that day. I walked downtown taking a few pictures, the atmosphere was one of shock, numbnes, bewilderment, and dignity. Sudenly a plane was heard over head, the whole Avenue froze, and looked solemly upwards, and waited. It was a USA plane. People then just walked on. I went to the Central Synagogue on Lexington, it was closed. And Guarded. So I stood outside and thought some prayers. In the evening the President was due to give his address, I went to the Hotel Foyer to listen, I wanted to be with a crowd. There were two guys on a couch behind me talking. I let rip. Excuse me I said "would you mind being quiet, you know just button it" I turned away to the TV in tears again, for I do not know how many times that day. We watched the President in Silence, at the end many people were in tears; the man to whom I had let rip earlier came up and shook my hand and apologised. I had now been able to contact people from the UK, and let them I was OK. A friend of my Partners' managed to get a text message out too, so I was able to reply in text. I took a glass of wine and went back to my room. I called my friend and chatted for a while breaking in to tears from time to time. I then went to bed, a restless night interspersed with the TV. Here are some other things I remember: * What happened to the very funny guy from the WTC express lift. *What happend to the guy who told my partner "no drinks on the roof sir" as we took the escalator to the roof on 8/11 * In Penn Station a fireman passed me, he was white with ashes and dust, exhausted, dragging his equipment along the ground, eyes red with all of the above and tears, thought not seeing. *In the Street at a crossing; Police blowing whistles, stopping traffic and people. A large grey souless truck lumbering up the street, rendering its way relentlessly onwards. It passed us solemly. Someone asked " did it contain bodies? "Yes" the Policeman replied and he let us cross the road. And Parts some whispered behind me. * The silence and emptyness of 5th Avenue at 4pm *The Silence and emptyness of Grand Central at 5pm. *The beginnings of the hopeless, almost, poster displays, have you seen , do you know, have you seen? *The beginnings of the memorials, candles on sidewalks, flowers in fences. *The smell, the smoke, the dust, the beautiful late summer days destroyed. People wearing masks. *Travelled to Boston on Amtrak on Friday 14th. Armed guards on the train saying to them "I am so pleased to see you". "You are welcome M'am." *Going to the Synagogue in Boston on Friday evening a man sitting outside waiting for the service to start. I had some pictures from 8/11 and 9/11 I shared these with the people there. Got talking to the man he was a Pilot, he was unsure what to do, so I guided him. He was a pilot from an American Airline. Shocked and distressed verbally, though maintaining his dignity. He was due to fly again the next day. The Rabbi broke the traditional service and gave people a few minutes to speak, The Pilot told us that Pilots only had minimal training in what to do in the event of being Hijacked or attacked by passengers. He felt that intruders into the cockpit should be removed. He left early and said I am so glad I met you and shook my hand. I never saw him again. I hope he is OK. *Sitting outside the hotel in the evening eating a light meal, feeling waves and waves of guilt washing over me. *Having a call with a friend in NYC and not remembering a thing about it. *Flying from Logan Airport to NYC, happy that my luggage was searched. Thinking did Mohammed Atta walk here? Did he walk over there? And finally, although it is not really final as this will never be forgotten, ** I still have a half drunk bottle of water which I bought from the tower roof cafe . It is in my study in the UK. NMAH Story: Remembered What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? * Evil exists and evil will be crushed. *The bravery, dignity, and care of each other, of everyone who was there. *An inter faith inter service memorial needs to be built on the site, and an inter-faith service held each year. *Where there is such a crisis how people need leadership, and how powerful a leaders' words can be. I was in a total state of shock, numbness, and being told what to do , how to cope, what to think, how to overcome was very important. I remember responding so positively to words of encouragement, turnign a spiral of depression and PTSD, in to Oh yes I can do that. Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? *I bought some flags when in Boston and placed them in two vases with flowers and candles in the room. The hotel staff commented it was alovely thing to do. The two flags are now in my sitting room window in the UK. *I visited the US a few times after 9/11, and each time I see the flag flying I feel this life of Joy and Hope rising in my heart. *I have a flag in my study at home, and one in my sitting room, as a blanket on the back of my sofa. When I lean against it I feel strength. *I have an official memorial calendar in my kitchen together with a piece of paper from my hotel on 9/11. I slept through all the news oblivious to what had happened. My girlfriend was working the day shift and upon her arriving at home I was woken up and she was yelling "We're under attack!", I felt I was dreaming because well it just couldnt have been. I seen the news around 5pm est, I was floored with disbelief, angered at the the terrorists, and feeling for all the people that had to go through it all. Ive lost my job of 5 years, the company I worked for was a supplier for General Electric Aircraft Engines and most of our workload was to this customer which supplied mostly the commercial airlines in the US. I feel more patriotic than ever before, and I loved my country all my life. Ive lost my job, everything I worked for the 5 years at my company, but still I feel fortunate not to be directly involved like the victims and families of everyone involved in that tragedy. Those people on the flights that hit the buildings, the WTC towers, The heros of the local police and fire dept's, all the people that helped in rescue efforts and rebuilding afterward's. It was a day americans united once again and stood together with their country. The USA must remember how vulnerable we are and remember this event to not let it repeat itself again.
