<text>Dozing on and off as I traveled to New York via the Boonton train line, I awakened to a buzz of voices around me. Looking out the window, I could see flames at the top of the World Trade Center Towers. I leaned over and asked a man in front of me if he knew what was happening. He said, that a small plane had hit the towers. We arrived at the Hoboken station at 9:25 AM that morning. Fortunately the train was twenty-minutes late that morning. We would normally arrive at 9:05 AM. By 9:15 AM I would just be arriving at the Path Station at the WTC Center. Instead, at 9:25 AM, we were hearing an announcement -- "All transportation in and out of New York is canceled."</text>

<text>I was sitting on the return train back to Lincoln Park speaking with a friend. Two men sat in front of us. We soon learned that they were in a building across the street from the first tower. Listening to their story, I learned that when the first plane hit, they looked out the window and both instinctively had the sense to leave their building. As they dashed towards the NYC Ferry Service to Hoboken, the second plane hit the next tower. One fellow reported that he saw the landing wheels of the plane hit a car and that they were both dodging debris that was falling from the plane. As they looked back, they realized that some of the falling debris were falling bodies.</text>

Like walking into a time warp, I continued toward my desk peering around at fellow employees who were unusually quiet, and somber, milling around in a centralized area, concentrating on something. Once at my desk, I see it's my radio blaring. After what feels like a very long time, a full minute at best, I plead to a colleague "What's going on?" Someone quickly replies "haven't you heard, [they] got the World Trade Center!", another seemlessly chimes "And the Pentagon, [they] got the Pentagon!" My minds starts to wind up and picutres of horror started flooding my mind, I turn around and announce I'm going home. My wife was working from home that day and all I could think about was going home.</text>

<text>I truely feel that Americans were excepting all kinds of religions in the 90's as fact . Our President was embracing the muslims and Vice President was in buddist temples in California .This Nation was founded by men and women that were killed and torchered by other religions for the sole purpose of telling the Truth that Jesus was Gods Son . When we started breaking Away from this we allowed the wrong thinking of Americans to believe they could except other religions . In conclusion ; the other Nations saw us as weak and their gods more powerful thus they attacked . History bares this out from the beginning of time . The muslims have always killed people and placed temples on top of the conquered temples .The world has fought them 6 times in the last centuries and will have to fight them again due to their religion is one of murder and conquer. Our President now ,George Bush is realizing this as we speak and our Armies are in Afganistan and Iraq .</text>

<text>My wife and I both work at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers on 7th Ave and 53rd St in midtown Manhattan. She works an early shift; I work later. On Sept. 11 I was at home, our son, Josh, 9 yrs old then, was home from school sick. She called at about 8:55 to check on him. Before she hung up she said, "oh, turn on the TV, a plane hit the World Trade Center." I hung up and turned on the TV. I was stunned to see the amount of devastation. I thought it was a cessna. Then Wanda called back. Now her voice was filled with fear and urgency. "Billy just called!" she shouted. "He said we are under terrorist attack! He said to go home! He said, 'do you know who this is? This is Billy Burke!'" Billy was my older brother, a Capt. in the FDNY. His house was on E. 40th St. She had no idea where he called from; she said it sounded like he was in the street. She said she could hear the fear and urgency in his voice; "he yelled at me - do you know who this is? Go home! Get out of the building!" It seemed unbelievable. A minute later I watched on TV as the second plane hit the south tower.</text>

<text>My wife and I arranged for her to leave the hotel and head home to the Bronx, a distance of ten miles - by foot. I would get on a bike and meet her. All other means of transportation were out. Neither of us had a cell phone and we played phone tag by calling home where her older son, 19 also was. I rode through the south bronx, where my parents grew up - past St Jeromes church where they were married (they are both deceased) and through the very streets where my father earned legendary status in the FDNY in the late '60's and early '70's. He was Deputy Chief and division commandor of the 6th division - the south bronx. In those days they fought a hundred fires a week. Their efforts were documented worldwide and he and his men were considered the best of the best. Billy's admiration for our father and his men was boundless. From the road I could see the great white cloud where the Trade Center once stood - but I had no idea what it meant. My most vivid memory is finally meeting Wanda - there was a river of people fleeing Manhattan and I saw her first, she had her back to me. And it was instant relief and comfort. She turned around and smiled then saw the look on my face. "What's the matter?" "Billy's down there," I said.</text>

<text>It has ushered in a new era in American history. The post-vietman era is over. On that morning we all changed, changed utterly. What we were is not who we are. We have a vurnerability we did not realize; as a consequence we have discovered resources we either did not know we had or had forgotten and have found heights of character we were unaware we were capable of.

I have never been prouder to be a New Yorker or an American then I was in the days and weeks following Sept. 11. We were challenged and we responded. And the first to do this, to give the last full measure of their devotion was the firefighter of the the FDNY. Billy was a devotee of Civil War history. At his eulogy, Oct. 25, 2001 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, I quoted Gen. John Buford of the Union forces weeks after Gettysburg: "The zeal, bravery and good behavior of the officers and men on the night of June 30 and during July 1 was commendable to the extreme. A heavy task was before us; we were equal to it and we shall remember with pride that at Gettysburg we did our country much service." -- "The zeal, bravery and good behavior of the officers and men of Sept. 11 was commendable to the extreme. A heavy task was before them; they were equal to it and we shall remember with pride that at New York City they did their country much sevice."

A grave task was before all us and it remains so. We were equal to it and will continue to prove so. I believe the day will come for all of us when we shall remember with pride that we did our country and neighbors - much service.</text>

<text>I was 37 years old and never in my lifetime did I think I would ever be a witness to such a tragedy as this. I am a nurse and I was sick in bed with the flu, my husband came into the room and turned on the TV. I cried for 2 weeks straight after that. I always thought I had bouts of depression but after that I realized that all my worries and sufferings were nothing compared to the heartache our nation was about to endure. I am a spoiled American who has everything and never ever thought there were people in this world that hated us. I thought we were doing good in the world and giving so much more of ourselves than we could ever afford. I thought we were untouchable. I thought we were invinsible. What a hard lesson to learn! Now I look at everything around me and I am more grateful. I have slowed down so that I don't miss the important things around me. Our world is full of beauty and this just opened my eyes even more so I can see it. I hope that everyone can slow down, wave at your neighbors, stare at the sky as the clouds float by and give yourself to help those in need. We are just travellers here so be courteous as a guest. Love, peace and harmony to us all!</text>

I also remember when i got home from school, my mother called me and asked me if i was ok. i told her no. i wasnt ok i was so damn sad, i mean the whole day was focused on just sitting watching t.v. and watching people jump out of buildings. and knowing that there wasnt a damn thing i could do about it. i remember just sobbing pretty much the whole day. i can honestly say that this was the single most saddest moment in my whole 18 years of life.</text>

We sat and watched in shock and horror as they replayed the scene many times over.

It was our British Literature teacher, he was yelling muffled shouts. We all thought he was acting out a play but we were all too wrong. He came into our telling the us what had happened. We did not even believe, not for a second. He walked over to the televison in the corner of the classroom and turned it on. We were all flooded with images more disturbing that I have yet to see again.</text>

Nearly everyone was crying, I could not cry. I felt as though I should be, but I could not make the tears come. My heart was with the people all around the country, but my body was in a state of shock. After prayer they let us out early. I sat in the student center for a little while before I left. As I was walking out side I heard a crashing noise in the sky. I looked up and fighter jets, and inbetween was Air Force One. It was a sight that will stay with me forever. </text>

              <text>My story of 9/11/2001

This day started off as the average day for me. I got up extra early, drove to Gordons Corner Deli to purchase my Academy Bus tickets then drove to the parking lot and proceeded to catch the 4:40am bus. I arrived to my destination (WTC) about 5:40am. I bought my breakfast at the corner vender and then proceeded up the escalator to 7 WTC. I got to my desk, dropped off my bag and then went to the gym, which was located on the 47th floor. I always arrived at 6:00am and worked out to about 7:00am. As I stood on the treadmill, I watched the beautiful sunrise, which I have done on a daily basis. After the workout, I took my shower then went down to my desk on the 33rd floor.

My Best buddy Tom came in early that day and asked if I wanted to run down to the cafeteria to grab some breakfast. I told him I would be a few minutes; I had some things to do. This was a little bit before 8:30, however before heading downstairs, I grabbed my green card holder, which had money and the bus tickets I bought that day.

When we got to the cafeteria, we ordered breakfast, all of a sudden, this woman I knew ran and hid by her cash register hysterically crying, pointing to the window. The expression on her face was something I will never forget. When Tom and I ran to the window, we saw a plane wing falling from the sky, debree hitting the ground, pieces of the building falling from the sky. I remember saying to Tom, what kind of a fucking idiot would fly his plane so low knowing there is tall buildings in NYC. Then the TVs in the cafeteria went on, we saw a picture of the one tower on fire. I tried to calm people down, I tried to hold them and insure them that everything would be ok. I had absolutely no idea if that were true. I felt people, at that time, needed to hear that everything was going to be ok.

As Tom and I were making our way back up stairs, there was a HUGE explosion, the whole building shook, glass started to partially shatter. The screaming went right through you, the lights were flickering and no one knew what the fuck was going on. No one was telling us anything. We all thought at that moment we were going to die. There was so much panic that set in and we had no where to go. All the doors were locked and no one was letting us out of the building. There were explosions every 10 seconds; our building did not stop shaking.

I remember at that moment life was at a stand still, no one could move fast enough, I heard my friend call my name, he sounded a distance away and I could not turn around fast enough. I did not know where to go. All I knew at that moment I was going to die that day and I was never going to get a chance to see my kids again. Tom grabbed my hand and pulled me to run up the escalator back to the cafeteria. I remember running like a mad person to find a phone to try and get through to my kids. It was chaos everywhere, people running and no where to go. I remember being stopped by one of the cafeteria workers, telling me to go the other way and get out, the building is about to collapse. My life was in slow motion; I did not know where to go. I was so confused. Every time I picked up a phone, it was dead. There was no way to reach out to someone to get to my kids. I caught the cafeteria TV, the most unforgettable, horrible picture I saw was the other tower got hit and they were now both on fire. It did not seem real, my feet were like concrete blocks, I could not move. Tom got my attention, we ran down to the main floor where there were hundreds on people and no where to go. All the doors were locked, the building was shaking, there was no way out!!!!!!

Tom and I found an emergency phone and we were told we could not use them. I grabbed the person behind the desk and told her, I needed to hear my kids voice, even for a second, I know I will never see them again. The phones were unable to connect out of the 5 Boroughs. I called my daughters father, Anthony Cavalieri, who lives on Staten Island and works for Rescue 5. I left him a message Anthony, its Debbie, I am in 7 WTC. The towers have been hit by fucking planes; we are locked in the lobby. I dont know if I am getting out, I am going to die, please take care of the kids and tell them I love them. The phones went dead. The explosions outside were over bearing, the sound of these huge pieces of concrete hitting the ground right in front of you were 100 times the sound of an M80 going off.

I remember praying so much, it hurt, my whole body hurt. The explosions, the screaming, crying all around me. The looks of death in each and every face, I will never forget that. As Tom and I ran back to the cafeteria, we turned around and at the window, we saw a huge piece of the building come crashing to the ground, like dynamite. The glass shattered all around us and we had no where to run. After a while when tom and I came back down from the cafeteria, the main floor was completely empty except for a few security guards. They asked, what the hell are you still doing here? They told us to go down below and exit out on Vessey Street. You have to understand Vessey Street was where all the debree was falling. Once outside, we had to duck from the falling debree, we ran so fast, we turned the corner ran a little further. I stopped dead in my tracks; I turned around, which was the worse thing I could have done. There was a huge hole in one of the towers on fire, thick black smoke everywhere, what I thought was debree, was actually human bodies hitting the ground with an uncontrollable force. I could not move, Tom kept pulling me to go with him, I told him I needed to go back. I needed to go back and everyone was out of the building (7WTC). It was my job as the Firemans Deputy to make sure that everyone was out of the building. He turned to me, shook me and assured me that everyone was out. I did not believe him, I told him I needed to get to the towers to help out. I needed to save people. I needed to go back there, these people need help. Tom kept pulling me, I could not move. I finally went with him; I do not know where we were running. I could not help but keep looking back. I could not believe what I was looking at. It did not feel real.

I asked Tom where we were running to, he said the nearest subway to get the hell out. I told him I cannot leave, I need to go back and help out. I felt so helpless knowing there were people dying and I was going to survive. I saw human figures in the air soaring like a bird that lost their will to fly and I could not do a goddamn thing. I felt helpless, so helpless. I gave into Tom, I went with him. I cried the whole way, I remember getting off the train. We were going to Toms apartment in midtown (I think). I was crying uncontrollably. I remember seeing many people walking from down town. While we were on the train, the 1st tower collapsed. We found this out when we got to his apartment. The news stations showed it over and over again. I was so angry with Tom for not letting me stay to help, but I was forever grateful to him for saving my life.

Tom and I went up to his roof that is when we saw the 2nd Tower collapse. I fell to my knees; every bit of life I had in my body was drained from me completely. My life went down with those buildings and all the souls in them. My life was shattered beyond recognition. The only thing I thought of was Why did I survive? Why did I survive? My second home was there, that is the place I spent my whole day, chatting with my friends while meeting new ones, shopping or just sitting with my friend(s) and eating ice cream. Most of those people that died on this day I must have passed a million times not knowing they will never be seen or heard from again.

After a couple of hours, the news reported that 7 WTC had just collapsed. Tom and I looked at each other with so much sadness, sorrow, heartache; we grabbed each other and held on for hours. No words could ever explain how we felt at that moment.

Tom lived right across from the NY Hospital, I remember watching all the doctors, nurses and staff waiting for the injured to come, however, there were not enough, very few. Tom and I watched the whole night into the morning; I can count on 2 hands how many arrived. We both knew at that moment many lives were lost that day.

I remember trying to get through to my kids, 12 hours from the time we made it back to Toms apartment that had passed and I was still unable to talk to my kids.

At about 2-3am the next morning, Toms friend got a message to my sister Linda to inform her that I was ok. I found out that the 33rd Street Path train was up and running. I told Tom I needed to get onto the train and get home. At about 5:00 that night, Tom took me to the Path train and I was then on my way home to see my kids. I called my other Best Friend Peter, who was my other boss that lived in Matawan NJ. I talked to his wife Pat and asked her to have Peter meet me at the Matawan Train station in a couple of hours. After getting off the train and seeing my friend Peter, he was the beginning of my rainbow. He got the heartbeat going for me again. I would not let go of him; my arms held him so tight. He drove me home and there awaited my kids with open arms, seeing them completed my rainbow. I honestly thought I would never see them again. I said goodbye to Peter as he watched me go into the house with the kids. They were so happy to see me, we were so very happy to see each that tears rolled from their eyes, as I have never seen that before in the way they shed them. I missed them so very much; my kids complete my life as I do their lives. Without each other, we are lost. The last thing I remember, they put me to bed.

I spoke with my sister Linda the next day, which was Friday afternoon; she had informed me that Patrick, her husband was in the WTC for a breakfast meeting that morning. There has not been any word on his whereabouts. Many days have passed and we found out that Patrick was at Windows of the World that morning and never made it out. He was also with his brother-in-law who was also lost.

My sister Linda at the time was 6 months pregnant with her son. Her and Patrick knew they were having a boy and they already named him Patrick Joseph Dickinson. Their daughter Erin was 8 years old at the time and just thought her daddy was on a business trip. My sister is a very spiritual person and has even become more spiritual since this tragedy has happened, as did most of us who were affected.

My sister gave birth to Patrick on his daddys birthday, December 4, 2001. I was there with my sister when Patrick was born. I cried with both so much joy but yet so much sadness. Patrick at that moment was the fallen angel from God. My sister had a tough time with handling everything. I was there for her each and every day. Every time I held Patrick, I know his daddy was right there with him. I felt him; his presence was there. There were so many things, little things that would happen in the house when no one was in that particular place at that time. For example, a toy would go on, the phone would chirp, the light would flicker. I would look at baby Patrick and tell him Your daddy is here.

The nightmares continued, I dreamt of Patrick many times. Each and every time I went back to my sister and spoke about the dreams, she said how did you know that? I told her that Patrick came to visit me and told me things only you would know. She cried so much, I cried so much. This has been very emotional.

Patrick is now 19 months old on the 4th. Every time I look at him, I love him more each and every day. I always call him my Fallen Angel from God. The amazing thing about Patrick, he always looks up and says dada. When Patrick sees his dads picture, he points and says dada.

My life since this tragedy, hit me very hard financially, emotionally and all around very tough on a daily basis. Making ends meet has been a struggle. I have always been the sole financial provider for my family and I am not that person anymore. I am terrified to go back into the city. I am sending out resumes on a daily basis and being turned down each and every time. I literally do not have any energy left in my body. I am tired all the time, even thought I try to keep myself busy. I use to get on the 4:40am bus every morning and be at the gym in the city at 6:00am every single day for the last 3 years, never missing a day.

I went to therapy for a while after September 11th, I feel I jumped from counselor to counselor until I found the right one who would understand me. I did, her name was Barbara, CPC Behavioral in Freehold NJ. She was wonderful, she understood me, she never questioned me nor did she interrupt me. She let me speak, cry, scream what ever I needed to do, she let me. She broke the news to me that she was leaving. I was very upset, but happy on the other hand. She introduced me to my new counselor, I went to her a couple of times, but it was never the same after that. She was completely different and I did not feel comfortable with her. I stopped going. I have not been back since. It has been a few months now. I know I need to get back, however, being back with my support group is the best thing that happened to me. They are my family, the family that will always be there no matter what. They are the only ones that will understand when you are having a bad day. They put a smile on my face and I feel that that is therapy enough for me. I know I need to go back on medication again, however, it only makes me feel better for a little while and then the depression comes back.

You need to understand the person I really am. I have 2 teenagers who need my attention all the time. I am not an extravagant person, I have never asked for a lot out of life. Everything I have, I worked very hard for. I have worked since I was 13 years old and never had to ask anyone for help, until now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my life in one day.

<text>Shortly after 9/11, after reading of the heroic efforts of the firemen and others, I wrote these song lyrics to honor them and all other American heroes. The song can be heard on my web-site at http://orbit-zero.com.

What the Flag Means

This song is dedicated to Queens fireman Captain Patrick Brown and all the other heroes of 9/11.

Rob and John were brothers in war.
They charged the beach at Normandy.
Robert fell at Omaha
And Johnny died near Isigny.
Youll find their graves on that faraway shore
They fought to save from tyranny.
And every dawn at reveille
Their banners raised in victory.
See what freedom costs in each marble cross
And what the flag means to the free.

Henry came from a small river town.
He left his home for Vietnam.
Drawn to the flag of a high ideal,
He fought the war nobody won.
One day he forded a wild jungle stream
And there a sniper shot him down
And his lifeblood joined that sacred will
Our fathers forged on Bunker Hill.
Read it in the names on these granite walls:
What the flag means when youre called.

Michael ran like the wind on the tide.
He knew the race went to the bold.
He gained more speed with every stride
Until his shoes turned into gold.
And when he watched on that gold medal day
Old Glory rise, the Anthem play,
The tears came streaming down his face
When he felt that force beyond the grave.
Every freemans life sings their sacrifice-
What the flag means to the brave.

Patrick Brown was a Queens fireman.
He captained ladder number three.
He knew the look of the frightened face
That sought the light of liberty.
That day his crew climbed the North Tower stairs
And all our hopes came crashing down,
There he saw that shining face
Hed spent his whole life trying to save.
You know your job is done when your rescue comes
And your life shines like the sun.

Tonight a storm veils a poor widowed world.
Her lonely tears just fall like rain.
A young man wakes from a troubled dream
And hears a hero call his name.
And as he makes that fateful vow
He knows his life is not his own.
And a new hope lights the starry sea
High above the Land of Liberty.
See the million flights of the Stars and Stripes-
What the flag means to the free.

<text>I remember coming out of class and heading to work in the Student Union at college and hearing people saying that we were being attacked. I thought someone was playing a prank and I shrugged it off. As I walked into work the big screen TV was on and student were surrounding it in disbelief. The first image I saw was the second tower being hit. I was shocked.

The college I went to was twenty minutes away from Shanksville, Pa and the attack caused a state of panic on campus because we all had a sense of security about being safe in the haven of the Appalacian Mountains untouched by dangerous city life. But terror can strike anywhere, at any time. You can never prepare yourself for such tragedy and heartache.

Usually the street was bustling with sound when I woke up, that time it wasn't. I logged onto the internet with my computer like I usually do, then a friend IMed me asking me if I had turned on the television. I looked out the window before turning on the TV, it was kinda dusty outside. When I saw what was going on, it was shock. I thought my friend had been joking, but it was no joke. I don't remember how long it took for reality to set in, or how long I had been staring blankly at the television that day before I sat down and cried, but it was awhile.</text>

Some moments the scent alone would bring tears to your eyes, not because of the burning sensation, but the realization of what it was.
You know, I went to the site, 2 weeks later, even took pictures that for some reason I haven't developed. There were places where the dust had gathered so high you could swear there had just been a huge snowstorm. </text>

<text> It was my birthday. I was driving home from a rewarding night at work. All of the nurses on the "midnight shift" had thrown me a surprise birthday party and I was in a very good mood. I prepared myself for bed as I normally do in the late morning hours. I attempted to set my alarm to wake me after only a few hours because I had classes that day. Because I had a clock radio and I use the radio instead of the annoying alternative buzz alarm, for a split second, I mashed the "sleep" button to check the volume of the radio to ensure it was loud enough to wake me for my class, followed by the "snooze" button to shut off the radio. I thought for a moment that the news brief being broadcasted during that split second sounded like something important. I decided to put my sleep off for a few minutes, or so I expected, only to be horrified at what was before me. I was enlisted in the Army's IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve). I can remember running around my room rushing to organize everything. I was sure that we were instantly sucked into WWIII or something similar to that degree. I drove to my grandparents house. My grandfather is a WWII vet and I respect his opinion tremendously. I busted in the house and I could see into the living room. They were watching the events unfold and I shouted, "What do you think about that Grandpa?!" He yelled back, "I think you better get your boots on!" The confidence in his voice confirmed my questions about what my immediate future entailed.
I voluntarily re-entered the active Reserve until I fulfilled my eight year enlistment with the Army. I am currently in the Air Force and I have yet to be deployed. I would gladly serve anywhere my country needs me to go. There is no question about that. At the same time, there is no question, my birthday is permanently etched in history and the future. I always thought my birth-date was a cool day. Not just because it was my birthday. I always felt it was more than that. But I never could put my finger on it. A future-minded sixth sense? Who knows. All I know is, I am forever divided. Should I be proud? Should I be sad? Should I feel special? At least, no one has an excuse to forget my birthday. </text>

Everyone was so somber, tears welled in the eyes of those who had family and friends out there (i'm in UK), as i did myself. The more i read, the more panic welled inside of me.
It was strange to see how this event was pulling everyone together, support flowed for all directions to those who aided the emergency services and how much support went to the families of those who had been injured or even killed.
One event built the brotherhood of men stronger, yet tore it apart at the same time. One even is firmly imprinted in the memories of those left behind.</text>
