LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On September 11th I was going about my every day business inside the Pentagon. I had been stationed at the Pentagon for over a year and worked inside the National Military Command Center (NMCC). The NMCC is located in the C-ring and is on the opposite side of the building from where the plane struck. I had just heard from a co-worker that a plane had struck the World Trade Center in New York. My first thought was what a terrible accident, I hope no one got killed. Then the word came down that another plane had hit the Towers and I knew that it was not an accident but a terrorist attack much like 1993. How wrong I was in that thought. Just then I felt the floor shake and we all looked at each other wondering what had happened. Someone came running in to say that we had to evacuate because the Pentagon was on fire. As we were filing out of the Pentagon the rumors were floating that there had been an explosion caused by the construction crew working on renovations, it was a truck bomb came the second opinion, and then someone said that a plane had hit the building. As I look back now I marvel at the calm of those around me. Most of the work force at the Pentagon are government civilians. They were not trained for this but as public servants hold a unique trust of those placed in charge. There was no panic or pushing, just a buzz wondering what exactly had happened.
As we filed outside, on what is called the Riverside entrance, I looked back and for the first time was impacted by the enormity of what had happened. The black smoke and flames could be seen shooting from the building. I stopped and stared, never would I have dreamed that someone would have the audacity to attack my Pentagon. Then came the secondary explosion of the aircrafts fuel tanks. The ground shook, knocking many people off their feet and setting off every car alarm in the parking lot. Then came the panic and screaming from some. The military first responders jumped into action to get everyone out of the parking lot and away from the building. As I was moving to our units rendezvous point I thought now would be a good time for another attack with all these people out in the open. Just then someone started screaming that another plane was headed our way. People dove to the ground and ran for cover. When I looked up saw and then heard the F-16s I almost broke out in tears. Now I really knew what the sound of freedom was like. My brethren were on guard and no more attacks would be coming from the skies.
I was the Non-Commissioned Office in charge of the office that supplied the communications needs for the NMCC staff and support personnel. We had numerous cells phones on hand and had brought them with us. Unfortunately the cellular tower network was quickly overwhelmed. Each one of us wanted to let our loved ones know that we were all right. We also wanted to contact our co-workers who had to stay behind to man their posts. We had a mission to support and as our chain of command was working on getting us back into the building we were trying desperately to contact anyone to pass the word to our family and friends that we were still alive. I was finally able to get through but all I got was my wifes voicemail. We hadnt even been married a year yet and all I could think of was what she must be feeling or thinking at that very moment. After a few more fruitless tries I got through to my father in-law. I assured him I was okay and asked him to get a hold of my wife, Kimberly, and let her know that I would be in contact as soon as I could.
We all waited outside on the grass beside the Potomac River, watching the Pentagon burn and wondering what was next. Some were chosen to go back inside to continue our support of the NMCC. The rest of us gathered around a portable TV that someone had retrieved from their car. We watched the news reports until the batteries died. Finally the word came down that the rest of us were released to go home. We were to stay by the phone until contacted with more instructions. I realized then that it would be impossible for me to get home. You see I car pool and there was no way to find my commuting crowd. I knew of some co-workers who lived close to me and asked them for a ride. We all crammed into the truck and off we went to go home. The trip home was usually about an hour, that day it took almost 3 hours. During that time we talked about the who, the what, and the whys of the attack. Wondering what enemy could reach out and touch us so easily. We each discussed how we were going to contact our loved ones either through phone calls or emails. We also wondered what was in store for us since our place of work was burning.
All those thoughts disappeared when I pulled up in front of the townhouse I was renting at the time. There on the steps stood Kimberly. How she knew I was coming Ill never know. She told me that she knew I would be there and could feel me draw closer. As I held Kimberly I was finally able to cry, able to cry for those lost in the attacks, for Kimberly and for myself. I hated the fact that someone had put my wife, friends and family through hours of living hell. I hated the fact that I was powerless to do anything about it. Hours later I would begin to get angry. I knew that America would not sit by idly and let this go unpunished. As I watched the reports the rest of the evening I felt the same sadness, dismay, and anger that all of America was feeling. But I knew that sooner or later I would have a hand in making sure that whoever was responsible would be brought to justice. For you see the NMCC is the heart and soul of the Pentagon. The directions for military action would come from there and I was part of the mechanism.
I had only been home for about an hour when the call came for me to report for duty the next day, in field gear, at the Pentagon. It is hard to explain the feeling I had when I arrived at 5:30 AM at the Pentagon. The flames were still shooting from the roof and I could see the damage from the parking lot as I slowly walked toward the entrance. It was eerie going into a building that was on fire. The halls were smoke filled and breathing was a little difficult. Parts of the Pentagon were without power and you could see the glow of the fire down some hallways. As I entered the NMCC the first thing that struck me was the cool clean air. The air handlers in the NMCC were the best in the business and had scrubbed the air clean. We all gathered in our office and received our orders from our commander. We went to work. I know that none of us gave a second thought to our situation. Inside a burning building, maybe a target for a second attack, and that we might have to evacuate again if the fire could not be brought under control. We all did what we had to do, what we were paid to do, what we volunteered to do and most importantly what we felt we were called to do, protect and defend our country from all enemies.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I have many strong memories of that day. Two stand out in my mind. The feeling of security and pride when the F-16's came flying over head as we stood on the grass. Knowing that there wouldn't be another attack from the skies this day. Also the feeling of relieve and gratitude as I held my crying wife and assured her that I was okay. The realization that when it comes down to it all that really matters in life is those we care about.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The events of 9/11 have affected the country in much the same way the Vietnam War did in the 60's. We have highlighted the differing camps in the US. We have those who stand behind our elected officials, we have those that disagree with our actions, either by belief or ignorance and we have those that are apathetic. I feel overall most people have put 9/11 behind them and have forgotten how terrible that day was for the entire country. There are those who were profoundly affected by the events and will never be able to put it behind them. We need to remind America occasionally that we stand for freedom. Freedom is never easy or cheap. The majority of Americans do not understand how the rest of the world lives or thinks. So we continue our daily lives and every once in a while we think momentarily about history.
Personally it was nice to see the outpouring of patriotism but I knew that would fade with time. I feel less safe than I did before and tend to look up at the sky and over my shoulder more. I have a little survivor guilt now and then. I knew quite a few of the people who died in the Pentagon. I know how lucky I was to be in the right place at the right time. I know how lucky I was to be able to go home that night and be with my family. There were many Americans who were not so lucky on September 11th.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
It'd been a completely normal weekday. I'd gotte up, gone to school, and was just sitting in Geometry, wishing for the class to end quickly. It was then that one of the other students walked in, having just come from the clinic. His words were simple, and I hadn't even really understood them until a few minutes later.
"The World Trade Center was hit."
Of course, everyone was somewhat disbeliving of him, but he'd said he'd seen the news on in the clinic, and that it was talking about it, so my teacher, Mr.Moore turned the news on, and there it was.
For the rest of the class we watched.
The bell rang, everyone got up to go to the next class, and I couldn't help but linger, watching the images on the screen as I slowly packed up my books. It was while I watched that the second plane hit. That's when what was really happening really hit me.
I went to Chemistry, and that teacher had the exact same thing on. The news. I couldn't take watching it... I was still in shock about what was happening.. America was being attacked! At that point, we still didn't know what or who...
I asked to go to the clinic, and upon getting there more of the reality of the situation hit me.
I was aware the Pentagon had been hit, but once I got to the clinic, I realized how many students had parents who worked there. Many were in shock, just as I was, while others cried, and tried desperately to cal parents andloved ones that may have worked there. I felt terrible taking up any time on the phone so I could call my Mom to get home... but I couldn't stay at school... it was too much to take there.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
When I went to the clinic, and all of the students there... you could litterally feel the fear and anguish in the air... some cried, and some just paced, or swayed, fear written on their expressions, worry deeply seeded in their eyes as they waited to make a call, to see if anyone they knew or loved had been hurt, or worse, killed by the attack.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
For a long time, even now actually, it makes us feel unsafe, and unsure. It was much like the sinking of the Titanic... we thought there was no way it could happen to us... that we were too large, too grand, ad far too supirior to ever get attacked by any country on our own turf... we were mistaken, much like the creators of the Titanic, when they found out she had sunken that cold night, we found out on September 11. But unlike the Titanic... America did not sink, but grew stronger over time... Ad now we're stronger then we've ever been, thanks to our President and our people.

I was sitting at my desk working on the computer. One of our agent's husband called to tell us the first tower had been hit. At first I thought it was a plane accident.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Probably the way I felt. There was fear, would there be more? and anger. I came home for lunch and the entire neighborhood was outside. I went in, turned on the TV and cried when I saw it on TV. Ever since I was little the first thing I'd look for going to New York were the Towers. When you saw them you knew you were close.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think its made all of us appreciate the peace we do enjoy and at the same time it let us know how very vulnerable each of us are.

At home as I was just waking up.My wife who works for an airline called me,as my answering machine picked up the call I heard her voice which sounded as if something was terribly wrong,as I reached for the phone I remember hearing her say turn on the TV right now!I turned on the TV and had the phone to my ear trying to make sense of what was happening and what she was saying,as I woke up and got my senses together I was in shock and disbelief as the news reports came in.My wife had the scanner tuned to the tower frequency and ATC repeated over and over "all aircraft on this frequency are ordered to land now at the nearest airport".As an airline employee myself it was devastating to watch the horror of the day unfold. All day long I was glued to the TV and spoke with many of my co-workers who shared my shock and outrage!
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Watching the second Trade Center Tower collapsing live on TV,also the aircraft colliding into the buildings.

I thought our generation would pull together and finally denounce terrorists and their evil beliefs but it appears that many people in this great country are still in denial and even as we are at war will say and write things that are anti American which gives our enemies the will to fight on.Many of my co-workers were laid off as a direct result of 9/11 and the ailine industry will never be the same.

i was on vacation and was off that day i remeber how pretty the day was i live in winchester va about 50 miles to the west of dc i was online about 900am reading emails when a friend instant messaged me and told me about the planes hitting both towers i ran to the tv and the first image i saw i will never forget was both towers burning and all that black smoke against that cobalt blue sky needless to say the day got only worse and i spent the remainder of the day at the tv or on the phone
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
i would say seeing that second plane hit the south tower is very strong as are the collapse of the towers i remember when the south tower fell a news reporter saying the whole building had collapsed and peter jennings yelling on live tv "the whole building"

How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
i think we learned that day that our oceans dont protect us from a determined foe that our open society helped the terrorist succeed that day we lost our virginity and joined all the nations that have had similar experiences on there own land it is a defining moment in our lives there is before 9-11 and after 9-11 i think we found out how people felt on dec 7 1941

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at a customer's house doing house cleaning. It was getting near time for "The Price is Right," so I turned on the television. At first I thought it was just a terrible accident, then the pictures flashed from the burning towers to the Pentagon building. The faces of the newsmen were grim and their voices sounded sluggish and exhausted. The word that stood out was "attack." Suddenly I felt very nervous and afraid. I just wanted to get my babies and go home where it was 'safe.'
Then I saw the buildings collaspe. I finished my cleaning job (very quickly and totally in a trance). What was going on outside? Were my children safe? My mind just kept screaming at me to get home.
Once I got to the school, the staff was on full security alert. That made me even more nervous. I'd never had to show identification to sign my children out of school. Parents were arriving in droves to pick up their children. I couldn't speak. My children wanted to know why they were getting out early. All I could say was 'some crazy people flew airplanes into buildings and killed a lot of innocent people.'
I couldn't stop watching the television. I didn't want to, but something just pulled me to find out what happened. I believed in my heart that they would find many people alive in the lower levels of the buildings. I just knew that people were going to come out of that basement, with the help of the rescue squads. Despite the fires, the devastation... I held out hope and prayed that hundreds would be found in those lower levels...
My brother works in DC and one of my sisters travels alot on her job. We called around until we knew everyone was safe.
I wanted to cry, but I didn't want to upset my boys. I wanted to scream. I wanted it all to be a nightmare that I would wake up from.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory was the feeling that 'the home of the free and the brave' had been betrayed. I remember how I suddenly felt so insecure. How could my country allow this to happen? We are supposed to be the strongest, the most sophisticated country in the world. How come no one knew? How come this was not prevented. The images of those towers falling haunt me to this day. I cannot look at pictures of them without imagining the terror those trapped inside must have felt. And to have them come down like that...I often (still after all this time), wonder if they knew. What about the ones that were almost out? They were crushed when they were so close to getting back home to their loved ones. It haunts me still and it hurts...So many families devastated, so many promising lives lost.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
While taking a health class earlier this year, I was relieved to know that I'm not the only one in the world who feels the anxiety that I do. I look at tall buildings and imagine a 110 ft building coming down. I see airplanes flying low and become afraid. I started having anxiety attacks. I have no faith in the security of this country. I didn't want the terrorist to win, but they did - by taking away my sense of security in my own homeland. I spend a lot of time with my children. I'm actually afraid to go into a tall building and I will never fly again unless I'm in a casket.
I've seen nothing the US has done to make me feel better. Police departments (i.e., the Park Police, border patrol, etc.) are understaffed, low on resources, funding, etc., Everytime a new law is enacted to better secure the country, some legal rights group comes along and says, "hey, that ain't fair - you're stepping on peoples rights." Meanwhile the border police are understaffed and can't stop the flow of people coming in (a great way for terrorist to just jump a fence and make themselves at home)to plan another worst attack.
I think people in this country, despite the flag waving and USA chants are more on edge. They seem to be more 'every man for himself' than ever before. They seem to be more aggitated. They are feeling insecure, maybe angry... I don't feel we have the brotherhood that we should. An event like this should have bought us closer together. It seems to have separated us further. Everyone in their own little world.. everyone collecting their water bottles, building their safety bunkers, hoarding duct tape - waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Not finding Bin Laden after all this time? Again, my confidence in the leadership of this country is at its' lowest point ever.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
9/11 I boarded a Delta fligt to Orlando FLA out of Boston's Logan airport. The flight left at 8 am. I remember the beuatiful morning and flew over NYC at about 8:30. I can recall the clear view I had out my window of Manhattan and took note of the statue of Liberty. At about 10:30 the captain announced that they had received notice that there was a security break in the air traffic control system and we had been instructed to land immedialtey. He had no further info but assured us that there was nothing wrong with the aircraft we were in. We landed immediatley in Charlston, SC. Nobody on the plane had any idea what had happened and most people including myself were complaining about the inconvenience of the delay. It was about 11 am when I finally entered the terminal where we were instructed to wait in a roped off area, still unaware of the events. The people at the Delta terminal had told us not to plan on getting out that day and we should find a hotel. I tried several times to call my wife to tell her where I was and ask what was going on. People were speculating and there were stories going around that a plane had hit the WTC. Nobody from that Delta flight had any concept of the magnitude of the events. Cell phone lines were busy and it was difficult to make a call but after about 15 minutes I finally got through. My wife, Michelle, was histerical when I reached her. She knew that I left Boston at 8am and had not heard from me until almost noon. She told me what had happened and I listened but still had no concept of what was going on. My next call was to my boss and he suggested that I rent a car and drive to his home in Charlotte, NC. I proceeded to the hertz counter and the line for cars was huge. People in line were talking about sharing cars and making drives as far as California. the airport in Charlston was filled with people but there was an unusual silence. Now it was setting in and at 1pm I had still not seen any first hand coverage of the events. When I finally got my rental car I decided that I would drive home to Boston. I spent the next 20 hours alone in a car. My drive took me through small towns in the south east, Wahsington, DC, Philadelphia, NY where again I could see the skyline and the cloud of smoke. I knew that I needed to get back to my family.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On Septemper 11th, 2001 I was in school, and was preparing the TVs for the student broadcast. It was a normal job for me as the student executive producer for me to check the news for stories. So I turned to CNN and a second later I saw the the first plane hit. I was speechless. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen the entire day, neither could the rest of the school, we were all trapped by the tradgedy of the moment. No one did any work that day, we just watched the news, and took it all in. About mid-day the TVs were all shut off by order of the principal. We, the students, revolted. We argued this was a huge part of our history and we had a right to know what was happening to our country. The school complied and let us watch the news again.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of that day was coming home from school, laying on my flip-bed in my darkroom, listening to "Time after Time" by Ozzy Osbourne, and crying myself to sleep.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work on capitol hill when I heard the news. We tried to watch the news and then people started calling the office saying they were bombing capitol hill. Some co-workers and I left the building and ran to a friend's house about 10 blocks away. As we ran we kept hearing large booms that we assumed were bombs. We later found out it was the sonic booms from the jets taking of from Andrews Air Force Base. We stayed at our friend's house until late that evening when it was clear to drive back to Virginia and Maryland.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The horrible moments when I didn't know if my family and friends were safe. The feeling of helplessness because you didn't know how you could assist those in need!
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
In the beginning I feel it brought our country closer together. I now feel that our political leaders are using the events of September 11 as an excuse to promote their own agenda and financial gain.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I awoke late that morning. I live on the upper west side of Manhattan. As i first turned on the television the reports were just coming in... a plane had hit the WTC. It made me immediately recall how a few years earlier a small commuter plane hit the Empire State Building after some problems with its navagation gear ( I think it was cloudy that day) and hit the building. It survived and a few perished. The building was fine.
It was odd and strange but not a freightening. I went in the shower and when I came out, the second tower had been hit. I was watching local news, channel 4 NBC, here in NYC. They were replaying the second hit, over and over and trying to figure out was it a missle or was this another plane, a jet in fact. It was incomprehensible. I watched in horror. At that point phone service was still possible. But as the morning progressed and the news got more freightening, Pennsylvania, The Pentagon... New York suddenly felt like a war zone. Phone service soon became unavailable.
The normally busy streets of the city quickly became desolate. An occasional emergency vehicle flew down without the normal gridlock that makes travel in the city a tedious detail.
Finally getting in touch with friends via the internet, I learned that my cousins husband was at work in the WTC that day. He had called his wife from his office in Cantor Fitzgerald, saying how a plane and hit the building, he was fine and they were evacuating. It was soon after that he left a call for his wife, while she was showering, that he left a passionate message of love for his wife and their new born child. Family members called and said I might expect him to eventually come to my apartment since travel to his Long Island home had now become impossible. He never came.
I think the single biggest for impression for anyone in the city that day was one of sheer terror. Rumors of nuclear bombs, biological attacks and more planes were rampant. While some friends went down to see what was happening downtown, I stayed huddled in my apartment alone and wondered in terrified stupor what was next. The smell of burning plastic... and what could have been human life.. wafted to the northern points of Manhattan. This as the normally well dressed men and women of Wall Street finally made it to uptown, ashen covered, disheveled and some (so I heard) bloody.
It wasn't a day of history! It was a day of fear, terror and loss. The loss of friends, the loss of security and the loss of my belief that mankind is essentially good at it's core. I lost many friends that day... one who was mearly visiting Windows on the
World restaurant attending a business seminar. We lost so much that day but we gained an awareness, that NYC didn't belong to the people who live here, it belonged to the world. So in all of the sadness and loss a new perspective was born. PJM365

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I had woke up very early that day. Around 5:30 am PST. Something just didn't feel right. I couldn't sleep and was tossing and turning. I took the dog for a walk and upon my return my neighbor yelled "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center! Turn on your TV!" I turned on the TV and couldn't believe my eyes. I just kept thinking to myself, our country will never be the same. I cried for all those who lost brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, and friends. I was also angry at our adminstration for turning its back to the Middle East and Foreign Policies. I am not saying this could have been stopped, but at least the present adminstration should have been paying more attention to the Middle East conflicts.
For the past week, all I could do is watch the news and our changing world.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Watching the plane go into the second tower. I couldn't believe that it was happening. I was so sad and angry. I kept asking myself, why is this happening now? What did we do to bring this about? Where was our intelligence? Why wasn't anyone paying attention?
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I believe in what Jesus taught. Love thy enemies. This country has turned into one big killing war machine. Hating anyone who is different than them or who have differnt beliefs. Destroying land and lives to hunt down one man and his fellowers is wrong. Hate breeds Hate. Love is the only answer. It is a very sad state of affairs and a horrible mess. We need new leadership.

I was walking into work at 2 WTC
As I looked up I saw a ring of fire around Tower 1. No one knew what was going on. In my mind I kept saying to myself should I go in. Something in my heart said No, so I proceeded to back away from 2 wtc. I backed away facing 2 wtc. As I backed away while looking up I stopped in the street facing 2wtc. I saw a plane in the sky; I thought it's one of ours, when it disappeared behind 1wtc. I had my cel phone in my hand and I kept dialing in order to communicate with my fellow workers and could not get through when the plane came out through 2wtc. I could not move. A piece of glass game down my right side and hit the floor. I remember feeling the wind but I could not move. A man yelled at me at told me to run that we were under attack. I just stood there and looked to my right side and saw the glass that had just missed me. One more inch or two and it would have been imbedded into my shoulder. A man pushed me and that was when I started to walk away. I then stopped and looked up and it was at that point all I could think about was all my coworkers were dead. I new at that point, that the plane hit our floors. Next thing I remember I was just walking around and not knowing what to do or where to go. I still have gapes in memory. The next thing I know I was covered with dust or something and walking toward the BKLYN Bridge. When I came across a former coworker from another firm. She walked with me to 33rd street and 2nd ave. where we departed. In the mean time I kept trying to call my sister and my phone was still out. Finally at 34th street I got hold of my sister only to find out my nephew was in lock up at school and no one could get into Manhattan to pick him up, So I walked to 15 street and 5th ave and sighed him out. I then walked with him to 34 street and 2nd ave and I found a police officer and told him I had to get into queens. The police Officer put my nephew and I into someones car and we got home. At that point I collapsed.

My strongest memory would be the plane going through 2wtc the floors where I worked, as I stood there in the street.

Lost my job and due to the date of termination I was kept out of certain benefits, Even thou what was left of us after 9-11.were kept on at an emergency site till Jan 31 and then terminated. Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I live in Pueblo, Co. I was on my way to work in Colorado Springs, listening to the radio as usual as I drove up I-25, when I heard that a plane hit one of the Twin Towers. My first thought was of a small plane like a Cessna off course or having trouble. I didn't hear the rest of the story until I got to work. Everyone was watching TV and then I learned there was another hit on the other tower and they were NOT small planes. We gradually went back to our offices and jobs, totally shocked and grieved.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Watching TV in the conference room at work when my boss' wife called and said a plane had hit the Pentagon. We knew after the 2nd plane hit that this was deliberate, but hitting the Pentagon was a definite act of war.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The upsurge of patriotism was remarkable. I sometimes complain about how things work here, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. And I don't want to hear it from people who hate us. We've helped practically every country in the world in one way or another and many of them have turned on us and I'm sick of it. I don't think the Arab countries would have the money to harm us if our engineers hadn't gone in in the 40's and 50's and helped develop their oil reserves. (I know we weren't entirely altruistic, but we still helped.) I consider myself a cautious liberal but I am getting damned tired of every corrupt regime and tinpot dictator hating us and hurting us.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in my kitchen and had turned on the local CBS morning show to check the traffic before I left for the day. National CBS interrupted the local to show the live images of the buildings being attacked. I couldn't feel anything until the World Trade Center fell.
My husband and I had eaten in the restaurant at the top of the building, Windows on the World, and I couldn't believe that was gone. That's what made it real for me.
I had to do something. I had been an U.S. military officer, and I had to do something. I did all I could do which was to go to the local blood bank. It probably didn't benefit New York or D.C., but it was all I could do here in addition to praying.
I spent the day there. They were short handed, so I worked the desk. People constantly came to give blood and were willing to sit the hour or two.
I was concerned about a cousin I have in New York. Our families were never close, but I hoped she was okay. I received a copy of her email in which she described how she lived across the river from the WTC and had gone to her roof after the first hit. She was up there when a second plane came around the corner and smashed into the building. She said there were papers flying everywhere. I still worry about her and hope she's okay after having seen this.
Strangely, she did exactly what I did. She went to her local blood bank and worked the desk all day.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Sitting down at my kitchen table and crying when it all became real.
Another strong one is from the following day when I watched TV to see the Queen of England stand with others to sing our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think we all have a better understanding of what's important.
I have never been a real "people person," but I reach out a lot more than I ever did. I always loved my family, but I try to do more for them. I write more. My parents lived through the Great Depression, and my father was in WWII. I always thought they were hopelessly old fashioned and a little simplistic. Now I understand them, and I find I'm adopting a lot of their attitudes and values.
I've noticed many people seem to be living more and more this way. The ornate is becoming simple. People just don't seem to want a lot of big, expensive things as once they did. Also, I've always enjoyed making things, doing crafts and sewing. After September 11, it seems as if a lot of people have started doing that. I think it's wonderful because finally more people are creating.
I have such a greater appreciation for everything on this earth, and especially in this country.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in Chemistry at school (Montclair Kimberley Academy High School) in Montclair, NJ. The head of campus came in and told our teacher that the WTC was hit by a plane. I thought a Sesna. Then we looked out the window and smoke billowing from the Tower. The school went into disarray everyone was whipping out cell phones and calling ppl rumors that a bomb went off at the pentagon. Our country was under attack. Everyon in school just roamed around freely. I went outside and sat and looked at the skyline, just in time to see the second plane hit, and long enough to see both towers fall. I saw all of this knowing that my uncle worked in one of the towers, not knowing which one or which floor, or if he made it out alive. We didnt find out until 3:00pm that day if he was safe or not.

What is your strongest memory of that day?
Just knowing that soo many people died in one felll swoop and that i thought my uncle might be dead for 5 hours. Staring at the skyline and it being a smog of smoke.

Me it showed me how horrible people can be and how devestating one person's actions can be. I think the event helped our country to come together. I think our country needed something to do that, unfortunately it was this.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was working for the Social Security Administration, Southern Ohio Area Director's office on this horrid day. I was preparing my final material for an Operations Team Meeting, which began at 10 AM that Tuesday morning. We tried to conduct the meeting as usual, but the tv was on in the background and everyone was more than distracted. The monthly 4 hour meeting was eventually called off at noon, and those travelling from outside of Columbus were sent home. I spent the rest of the day trying to maintain sanity in our Social Security offices, particularly those located in Federal Buildings. I also tried to maintain contact with my husband, my parents and my sisters.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of that day was the emptiness I felt. Being of Arabic descent, it was horrifying to know that others of Arabic background were in involved in this Satan-like act.

How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I was deeply saddened by the events, and found it difficult to get out of bed in the morning. I entered a mild stage of depression and when all I wanted to do was help those who were hurt. The tragedy did result in some good for us. Nine months later, our first daughter was born June 17, 2002. I suppose out of bad, comes good, so take that you terrorists! Another full blooded American has been born to continue to support the freedom our country stands for and to fight against the hatred your kind spreads.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was on vacation with my family at the Jersey shore. My mother and I were returning from a walk on the beach when a man said, "You might want to turn the television on when you get back to your house. Two planes have hit the World Trade Center." We ended up spending most of the day in front the television watching the day's events unfold. Most of my family is from a town 35 miles north of NYC. I came from Washington, DC to meet them at the vacation house. We felt fortunate to be away from terrorist targets and very fortunate to all be together.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
There are so many strong memories from that day. It is impossible for me to choose which memory is the strongest, so I will simply write about my first strong memory of September 11. I was on vacation at the beach, standing alone on the shore. The view was postcard-perfect . . . sparkling water, rolling waves, seagulls flying overhead, sandpipers running along the surf. The words that came into my head (and my thoughts don't typically move in this direction) were "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad." At that same moment the first plane was crashing into the World Trade Center.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I woke up the morning of September 11th, 2001 and started to get ready for work. I turned the radio on like I normally do and was shocked to hear the DJ mention that a plane had flown into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. At first I thought it was a joke and a pretty bad one at that. Disgusted, I flipped to another station where they were discussing the same thing. It was then that it began to dawn on me that this was far from a joke. I raced downstairs and turned the television on where I was immediatly met with the sickening sight of the once magnificent tower with smoke billowing out of it. I collpased to the floor and began to watch with a mix of awe, fear and disgust. I couldn't believe that what I was seeing was real. Finally, I couldn't watch anymore and turned the set off and went upstairs to call me ex-boyfriend to tell him the news. He hung up on me thinking that I was just kidding around. I drove to work that morning, (I was working at the local mall...) and the streets were eerily quiet. The mall was sooo quiet and we finally shut down early because someone decided to be sick and bomb threat the mall that day.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was making my bed and about to clean my bedroom. I was home and had the TV on to a news station which was unusual for me to do at that time of day. For some reason, I thought I should watch the news that day. I had been recently laid off from my technical writer position at a company in Fairfax, Virginia, and had not found a new job. I had channel 7 on and suddenly saw and heard the "we interrupt this program" announcement and saw Diane Sawyer report that a plane had somehow crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. As I watched in disbelief, I heard her say a little later, "well, here comes another plane," and it was as if she was thinking to herself that obviously this plane was there to somehow monitor or help the other plane. How that would have been possible, I don't know....but I got the impression that's what she was thinking. Then, when it crashed into the other tower, I felt like a bolt of lightening had gone through my body as I instantly knew we were under seige and the world would never be the same again. I started to shake and perspire. I tried to call my husband at work, but couldn't reach him. I felt a panic attack coming on, but I tried to stay calm. I sat glued to the TV and suddenly everything seemed very surreal...like I had gone into some sort of time warp from which I would emerge and the events unfolding before me would somehow disappear. I would heave a sigh of relief and I would tell my husband what a horrible dream I had had.
For days and days and still unto this day, I sometimes break down in tears for no reason.
As a result of 9/11, my life has changed considerably. There is no peace of mind. I do not fly in planes; I do not travel on large span bridges nor do I use the metro system, including trains and buses. I also do not attend public events of large gatherings, e.g., games, concerts, etc. I do not go to large malls and always shop in small stores. I pray for peace every day. I do not understand why our government was not better prepared for this eventuality.
