LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I remember the events of that day as if it were yesterday, not two years ago. I was filling in for the Executive Assistant at our command. Miss Mary came running into the office and said that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I thought she was joking, and if she wasn't that it must be an accident - a small plane crashed into the building. We all went into the Commanding Officer's conference room, and witnessed the 2nd crash and then the Pentagon crash. I was in a state of shock - I felt like I was living in a dream world. The CO/XO immediately went down to OPCON and to War Briefs. I handled a number of people coming into the office and calling on the phone the best I could. Our command streamed CNN to our personnal PC's so that we could keep abreast of the events as they unfolded. The base was secured - it took my husband hours to pick up our almost one year old Cassidy from the base day care; thankfully she was not aware of what was happening. I was one of the last civilians to leave the command that day, still in a state of shock. Terrorism happens in third world countries, not the U.S. For three days, the base was in total shutdown and my husband, a submariner, and I were glued to FOX News. For three days I was in a state of shock. Cassidy probably didn't understand why mommy was holding her so tight at times. I still can't believe it happened. Thousands of people lost thier lives for no real good reason, not that there is ever a good reason.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory is seeing the twin towers collapse over and over and over... It was heart wrenching. Military targets are one thing, but to target innocent civilians - and the children that were in the day cares...I can honestly say I wanted to personnally kill Osama and anyone else involved with him for what they did.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
We have realized we are not invulnerable, we are not as safe as we thought we were. Unfortunately it took this terrible act to realize it. Security has been heightened. I tend to look at people a little differently than before - a little more wearily. I appreciate life a little more and am trying to live to the fullest extent possible. I now have two beautiful daughters that I hope never have to witness such a horrific event ever again. The U.S. as a country has become more cohesive that it has been in a long time. In times of suffering the U.S. always pulls together and becomes stronger. Everyone has come together to fight the terrorism that plagues the world. At the same time, I hope all the fighting, although worth the outcome ends soon and maybe people can live in peace? Maybe it is just a pipedream, but I have hope.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in school preparing to teach my second period Spanish class. The TV was on in the teacher's room. We watched incredulously almost as if it were a movie, not real life. We were then told not to tell our students that anything had happened. It was almost impossible to teach and act normally.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The visual of the planes going into the trade center. The emotional turmoil of trying to locate my husband in Manhattan and my two sons, one in Boston, the other in High School nearby.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
We no longer take our safety for granted. We are not as safe in our own country as we thought we were. My daily existence is back to normal, but long range family plans have changed and we stay closer to home.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work on the morning of 11 September 2001, assisting guests to check out at the front desk of my hotel. Adjacent to the front desk is our office area. CNN was tuned in on the TV which sat on the manager's desk. I do not remember why I had the news channel tuned in. Whatever the reason, it was completely eclipsed by what I was to see that morning. Suddenly there were excited TV voices and scenes of "little" airplanes going into the Twin Towers buildings, and fireballs and smoke. I remember the first impression that this looked like something out of a video game. At first, there was no sense of reality to it. The sense of deep reality finally came when those little bitty people (the ones who jumped from the top floors) were shown falling outside the Towers. Such tiny dots; were they really people? That is when the horror of it finally set in. I watched and watched for hours as the scenes were replayed and replayed, and replayed again and again.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory was a dream I had that night. I was inside one of the Towers, a huge plate glass window before me, and I was looking out across the tops of New York City. Clear and hazy in the distance. And, way in the far distance, I saw an airliner, so tiny and far away. And I saw it turning toward me and then slowly growing larger and larger, and suddenly growing so much larger, blocking out all else as it came right in to me. No sound, just some kind of building vibration ending in a blare of white light ... then nothing. I awoke knowing that this was a scene replayed from the memory of some dead person who had seen it first hand. I will never forget that dream.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
We all became more vulnerable that day, and we learned a thing about fear. Americans have always been sheltered from that. Terrorism had always been a thing which happened somewhere else. Even the attack on Pearl Harbor was something which happened somewhere else. Somehow, even the bombing in Oklahoma City did not truly wake us up. Suddenly, we felt a raw and open vulnerability which had never been there, before. I think we all were proud of those great people in New York City; the way they pulled together to do the awful work of cleaning up that mess. My whole viewpoint about New Yorkers changed as I watched the way they supported each other and got the job done. And the country-wide surge of sudden patriotism was so strong you could taste it. And, beneath all this, there was an undercurrent of fear; an awareness of danger which was new for us. Perhaps it would be good if we kept a bit of that fear.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
My office is on the 10th floor of a building just a mile due south of the Pentagon. I was working in my office when my wife called to say a plane had flown into one of the World Trade Center buildings in New York. I rushed next door to my partner's office, turned on his television, and saw the second plane fly into the other tower. The tower was obviously targeted and our country was under some form of terrorist attack. Like all Americans I was glued to the television not believing what I was seeing.
As I was sitting in the office watching the horrific aftermath in New York, I saw a large fireball on the horizon north of our office building. Immediately I knew the terror had spread to Washington and we started to evacuate our employees from the building. I left the office around 11:00 am to work my way through the traffic to get home. Inroute, my wife called to tell me my best friend and best man in our wedding was the pilot of the American Airlines plane that went into the Tower in New York. She told me his wife Sheri was hysterical and needed me at her home right away. It was not until later that afternoon we found out that my dear friend Chic Burlingame was indeed one of the poor souls sacrificed that day. However, his plane was flown into the Pentagon, not the Tower in New York. It was his plane that created the fireball I had seen on the horizon that morning. His loss remains heavy on my heart, but his bravery that day will live forever.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was aboard a Lingus Airlines airplane, en route from Istanbul to BWI, waiting in Shannon for takeoff. We never got a go-ahead.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory is real-time sound and pictures on the TV in the Shannon airport waiting lounge. I was watching along with hundreds of stranded travelers, and it was very quiet except for the TV.
Then there is the long time I spent while trying to telephone my wife in Washington, DC, from the airport.
And finally, priests and private individuals opening their churches and homes for the travelers to stay.

How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think these events made this country's core values even dearer to be held up and protected.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work on Sept. 11, 2001 when a coworker came in and announced that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. At first I thought it was an accident, a plane flying too low until someone announced that another plane had flown into the second building. Word traveled fast because our servers were jammed with people trying to access news sites to find out what was happening. Since I couldn't get online, I called my mom who explained that while the cameras were trained on the burning building, another plane slammed into the second building. At that point, I got scared and started wondering what really was going on, why was this happening and who did it?
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
When I saw the first building collapse, I felt like I had been sucker-punched in the gut. Some of us had crowded into an office with a television. When I saw the towers fall, tears ran down my face. I couldn't help thinking of the people who were still inside when the buildings went down. I still remember how beautiful the day was. The skies here in Kansas City were clear and it was warm. By the end of the day, I just remember the surreal feeling of it all. At times the death and destruction didn't seem real.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The events of Sept. 11 woke a lot of us out of our complacency. For the first time, we had been attacked on our own soil. Who ever thought that would happen? The biggest challenge was explaining what happened to my then eleven-year-old son. He was very afraid as I was and wanted to know why the attacks happened and who would do this to our country? I have always considered myself to be an informed person. Now I find myself seeking more information - trying to get behind the headlines to educate myself about different countries and their peoples. We need to all understand why certain people feel the way they do about our country. Unfortunately, others don't share our view of grandness and invincibility.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I'm not one to read the papers, watch the news or listen to radio so i found out by word of mouth, passin a person in the street who was talking about it. That's when i started paying attention.
Everyone was so somber, tears welled in the eyes of those who had family and friends out there (i'm in UK), as i did myself. The more i read, the more panic welled inside of me.
It was strange to see how this event was pulling everyone together, support flowed for all directions to those who aided the emergency services and how much support went to the families of those who had been injured or even killed.
One event built the brotherhood of men stronger, yet tore it apart at the same time. One even is firmly imprinted in the memories of those left behind.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My stongest memory is going on the internet trying to find my friends, hoping, praying that their lives be spared. I also tried calming the hysteria of other friends, all of them scared that it will happen again. Fearing death, fearing what life would be left, scared of eachother, fearing themselves.
Many tears were cried that day, many prayers said.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
In the UK it brought us closer together, a family, everyone hurting, everyone supporting. The tears we shed that day are the tears of love for eachother; some cried because they lost those they loved, other cried in fear of losing those they loved, and others cried at seeing humanity fall apart. Still those tears are shed.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was attending a conference in a suburb of Maryland just outside DC sponsored by the Office of Personnel Management. I recall traveling to DC the preceeding weekend and visiting my brother-in-law and then driving to the hotel Sunday evening as the conference began on Monday the 10th. I attended the conference all day Monday and went to dinner Monday evening with a colleague I had not realized was also attending the conference. Having worked at the Pentagon for three years, 92 thru 95, I was contemplating skipping the morning session on the 11th and taking the Metro to the Pentagon and renew some old acquaintances. I decided to attend one of the morning sessions and then make my way to the Pentagon later on. Before those plans could come to fruition, CNN was being broadcast on the large screen at the front of the auditorium where the conference attendees had previously been listening to briefings. It was surreal to say the least. As events unfolded, the conference was eventually cancelled. I recall sitting in the auditorium and my colleague coming up to sit next to me. She asked me what I was going to do. I had a rental car and she didn't. My first thoughts, considering what appeared to be near panic in DC, was to drive to Maryland and stay with my brother-in-law. However, after an hour or so, we decided to "hijack" the rental car and drive back to Florida.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
As we made our way out of the DC area driving south through Virginia, I could not believe how beautiful the day was. There was not a cloud in the sky; crystal blue and I wasn't sure I'd seen a more beautiful day. The country side was magnificent and so picturesque. I contrasted those observations with what I knew was unfolding in New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. It was way too overwhelming. And, then my thoughts turned to my oldest son who was a Lt. in the 101st Airborne. I sensed he was going somewhere. And, I thought my world was quickly collapsing. But, how could that all be true on such a beautiful day?
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
My oldest son soon departed for Afghanistan for six months and received the bronze star for his performance in Operation Anaconda. The celebration and thankfulness of his return was soon muted by the understanding he would be headed to Iraq. He accompanied the 101st up country, spending time in Baghdad and other parts unknown. He is now out of the Army, has a great job in Atlanta and is doing fine. My wife and I aged many years in what seemed like a very long two years. Americans are a resilient people. We are proving we can make great sacrifices. We are also understanding that there is a cost to this precious freedom we enjoy. We should hold this gift closely, nurture it and never forget the price paid by Americans today and in the past. I believe we are a better people and a better country, forged from the events and aftermath of 9/11.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
First aware of attack on World Trade Center as I was driving to work in Syracuse, NY at 8:50 am Tuesday, September 11, 2003. In my office at about 9:00 am, we turned on the Television and learned of the enormity of the event and also witnessed the second plane hitting the south tower.
At about 9:20 am, I phoned my daughter who lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and who was expecting the birth of her first child the following week. She was unaware of the attack although she did say that she had been hearing many fire and ambulance sirens. A short time later smoke from the fires had reached her neighborhood about five miles north. On Thursday, Sept 13, my wife and I took the train from Syracuse to New York's Penn Station for a week's visit.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The strongest memory of that day is the horrific TV views and trying to understand the insane hatred that would drive men to commit such an unspeakable act against so many innocent people.
Also, in moving around the Upper West Side on Friday and Saturday, we passed many fire stations with candles filling the open doors in memory of lost firemen and police.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The attacks have made us more conscious of our vulnerability especially to the
terror provoked by suicide bombers. But the fact that over two years has gone by without another significant terrorist attack taking place in the United States by these extremists shows that President Bush and his administration have taken the right action both overseas and at home to improve our security.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at home on Sept. 11, and heard about the attacks on the radio. I then went downstairs and watched TV. It was truly shocking to see before your eyes events taking place that you never believed could happen. My wife called me on the phone to see if I was watching. Later I signed on to the Internet, and I called or wrote notes to some of my friends.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I'm afraid my strongest reaction, like that of so many others, is watching the tower fall from the sky. That and to hear spokesmen on the scene speculate about the number of dead. It was amazing and truly sad.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
That's a much more difficult question. Sadness obviously, at the sheer number of innocent people who were killed for no reason. Anger, of course, at the Middle Eastern people who had been behind it. But so much more. A more probing mind about what it is about this country that would lead someone to do this. Are we somehow responsible? Is it oil? The clash of religous beliefs? Are we living so well in our country in part by taking advantage of people in these other nations? Are the people who did this to us just a small fraction of Muslims, or do they represent a large and growing subsgroup within Islam? What do they seek, ultimately - merely for non-Muslims to leave their countries, or is their ultimate goal to take over?
There are so many versions of Islam, and within the Middle East the more moderate ones are always trying to suppress the growing right wing minority. But it is hard for someone living in the United States to get a firm handle on which things claimed by Muslims are true and which are just bizarre.
This truly leaves me asking questions, probing answers to try them out and see how they fit.

As a muslim, I felt embarrased for the people that follow ben Laden and Sadamm think they are the leaders of Islam. To the people that know better, knowing the U.S.( my country)did not that do that much for us to suffer the 9/11 attacks. Allah will punish Those such as be Laden, Sadam as well as the followers who know that is the devil's dirty work. The only explaination I can concieve is that in third world countries even though the Holy Quran is free the people do not have as well acess as we do in the States. I think Allah I was born in this country, I repersent, there is no other country for me. My heart will all ways be in Michigan, California and Arkansas. To the families that lost love
ones that was doing good from the heart, they are in a better place and looking down on you, so think of them and be happy for them. Thank you, Marlon findbrucewayne@yahoo.com

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was getting ready for work when I turned to CNN, my mom told me about some breaking news, the first thing I saw was the smoke going out from the Pentagon, when I saw the fires in The World Trade Center, I immediately thoght of a terrorist attack. When I saw the towers collapsing all I could think of was "Please God, tell me the buildings were all evacuated and that nobody is hurt". Misfortunately I heard of all the victims and my heart filled with rage and anger. When I heard that the President announced that the Afghan Taliban Government and the Al-Qaeda terrorists were behind the attack and that he will innitiate war actions against them, I called the American Embassy in Guatemala and offered myself as volunteer to take a rifle and go to war, they thanked me for the action and told me that if it was necessary they were going to call me. It take long time to heal my anger, and everything I thoght was on the victims and their families. Until today I guess all the people in the world who treasure human life, peace and decent behavoir are still affected for the terrible happenings of that black day.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The calls of illegal latin inmigrants who were calling to Radio Unica in Miami, crying and telling that even as they were not legally established in the US they were more than willing to answer to the call of the armed forces of the country they calle their own. Heroic gestures as I recall.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
They filled our hearts and our collective memory with rage, anger and a feeling of not believeing that something like that could be true.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I work at the Fort Myer Military Community, Housing Office at Fort Myer, VA. Fort Myer is right next to Arlington Cemetary and the Pentagon. We had heard the news of a plane crashing into the World Trade Center tower, so we turned on the TV in one of the offices. Then a second plane crashed into the second tower of the World Trade Center. I remember thinking to myself, this must be a terror attack, and not just an accident. I went back to my desk to continue working. I could see out the window from my desk, and one of my co-workers was outside, pointed up to the sky. Then I heard the most terrifying boom, like a bomb went off. We all ran outside, and we could see that the Pentagon was smoking. My co-worker said that a plane, which I heard flew the wrong way overhead. Planes from National Airport normally fly overhead from right to left, this one went over left to right. I felt so terrified, and went back into the office to call home. I was told to stay on Post by my retired Navy friend, but my bosses were saying to go home. I got my things and drove off of Post. Since, I live in DC, and I would have to cross two bridges to get home, I was terrified. I drove one way, and that was blocked off and I drove another, people were going through red lights and stop signs, sirens were going everywhere, it was like a war zone. I finally got on Route 50, headed to DC and drove on to the GW Parkway toward National Airport. Has I drove close to the burning Pentagon, I could see people walking like they were zombies, some without their shoes. I was able to get on Rt. 395 ramp to go across the 14th Street Bridge, but I could see that police had all traffic blocked from coming to the Bridge. I didn't know whether DC southwest/east freeway and bridges were going to be the next bombed before I could get home. Traffic was backed up, and everyone was in a panic. I couldn't get out of traffic, because police had places I would normally go, blocked off. I remember I was crying and very upset. I could see the Pentagon burning & smoking from just up the street from my home. I thanked God, when I arrived at my home safely.

The loud boom of the airplane hitting the Pentagon.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in the Pentagon at 1A1056. I remember John (my boyfriend, now husband) called me at work and told me that two planes had hit the twin towers. I was not concerned, I told him that I was safe in the Pentagon. Who would have thought that we would be attacked?? No warning or anything. We heard someone in the hall yelling, I thought someone was having a fight/riot. There was a lot of running and yelling. A lady in our office went to the hallway to see what was going on. All of sudden she came back into the office and told us to get out immediately. She told us a lady screamed at her "to get the hell out of the building." I
didn't even grab my purse which I am not sure where it is - either locked in my cubicle or on the floor some place. When someone says to get out - I move. We got
to the concourse and it was sort of chaotic -people weren't really sure which way to go. We looked like a bunch of rats not knowing which way to go. People were shouting directions and no one knew who to believe. I went with the crowd through the Metro entrance - but down the stairs rather than the escalator. I was afraid to go to the Metro because I felt that if anything more happened, it would be the Metro system that would be attacked. I wanted to get out of the building and be in fresh air.
I remember walking down the stairs asking what happened. Some man told me a helicopter crashed into the building. I knew that was crazy, there was too much smoke and why would everyone be leaving the building for a helicopter crash????
As I got into the parking lot, I saw Mr. White, a man I worked with and collapsed in his arms, sobbing, and worrying about the people who had died. It reminded me of the bombing of OKC all over again. The smoke, the chaos, people wandering all over the place, not knowing where to go or what to do. From what I could tell the aircraft crashed near the entrance that faces Rosslyn. I walked to Crystal City to where I used to work Air Force Services (ILV) and used their phone to call my boyfriend :- ), my Mom, and Valerie(Daughter). I stayed there for awhile and watched the news and made calls to my Mom (who did not know what was going on) and my daugher, Valerie who went through this with me when we lived in OKC. Her words to me were to "get home!". We then learned that another plane was headed towards D.C. (the one that went down in PA). Mr. Myers (ILV) told everyone to close the doors to offices that had windows. I finally got a hold of John and he told me to take the Metro to Huntington, I refused. I asked him to pick me up at ILV. He consented, but it seemd forever before he got there. He told me he would be there at 11:00 and he was. He had to park his car and walk to me. When he got to me, we sat outside and I held him and comforted him.
We walked back to his car and then followed the one way street in Crystal City. People from National Airport were carrying their suitcases, totally looking lost and confused. I felt bad for them because I knew that some of them were foreigners and didn't have a clue as to what happened. Instead of trying to go straight back to John's condo at Huntington, we decided to stay in Crystal City and wait until the traffic dissipated. We walked around Crystal City Underground and saw two young women who had been in the Pentagon's court yard when the plane crashed. They were wandering around, they had smoke and dust all over their clothes, no money. I realize now that they were in shock. I hope they are o.k. We went to a Deli in Crystal City, I think I ate something, but am not sure now. By 1:00 p.m. the Deli had run out of everything to eat.
We decided to try to get back to John's condo. He has lived here all his life, so he knew a lot of back ways to avoid traffic. Meanwhile, I got a hold of my Mother, who was very upset. She had several voice messages from relatives asking if I were o.k. When my brother called her to ask if she had heard from me, she said "Would someone, please tell me what is going on?"
Needless to say, the traffic was gridlock. But, we finally got to John's, I was busy sending emails to people to tell them I was o.k. and trying to calm my nerves. This was deja vu of OKC all over again.
We decided to leave the area and go to my home in Woodbridge. I have a dog that would need my care. Route 1 was bumper to bumper, speed limit was probably 10 MPH. We saw a lady walking with a briefcase and sandels. She worked in D.C., a co-worker gave her a ride to Alexandria, then she got a taxi, who dropped heroff at the Alexandria limits, that's where we found her. I asked her if where she was going would she get there faster by walking or would she like a ride? She was going to the Old Hechinger's lot in Woodbridge. I asked her if she would like a ride? She was a bit hesitant, but got in anyway. People in the cars were cheering at her and us when we picked her up. (Isn't it a shame, that people fear their "neighbor" and are afraid to receive or ask for help? What has this world come to???) She said the only reason she got in was because of me. She said if it had been just one person (a man) she wouldn't have. I explained to her that I had been in the Pentagon and OKC and that we were harmless. We took her right to her van at the lot. I hope she is doing well today!
Anyway, we finally got home. I don't remember much more except John had me downstairs cleaning the basement, I guess he wanted to keep my busy and not worry.
I do remember watching a lot of t.v. and seeing the airplanes crash into the towers over and over again. Although, I was not glued to the t.v like i was after the OKC bombing. There, I felt hopeless and helpless. I feel that I was better able to deal with this catastrophe better because of OKC. Although I was too close for comfort in the incident.
I am very proud to say that my boss, Mr. Brasch placed me in charge of AFPCA/XR Contingency Support Cell a few days following the attack om the Pentagon. I provided the "big picture" on the status of IT support for offices displaced due to the attack on the Pentagon. I received a Letter of Commendation for my support and dedication.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The smell of the smoke when leaving the Pentagon. Breaking down (crying) when I turned around and saw the Pentagon in smoke. Thoughts of the people who were dead.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Personally - I will never be the same. I
still live in this area - I am cognizant of my surroundings. I feel that an attack will happen again right here.
I think about how this world was before 11 Sep - when I didn't know/realize that there are people out there that hate us some much. I think of Americans as helping, nurturing people and it bewilders me that there are people who don't want our help.....
I hope I was a comfort to people the days after 11 Sep. I remember talking to a man who said he worked in the area where they would be bringing the bodies. I also remeber talking to a man who was suppose to be on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon, but his TDY orders had been changed. No reason why.....
God Bless America, I am proud to be an American ......

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I heard the news as I was driving to the Post Office to send some packages on my way to work.
They interupted a news story on the radio to report that a plane had hit the WTC. I immediately called my wife on the cell phone and held it up to the radio for her to hear.
The initial report was that it was believed to be a small commuter plane.
When I got to the Post Office, the workers there had not heard the news. I commented that it might possibly be a terrorist attack. I mentioned that they must worry about that a little for things coming through the mail.
I thought of that conversation months later when anthrax was sent through the mail and postal workers in our area (D.C.) died. As of this writing, that case has not been solved.
By the time I got out to my truck, the second plane had hit, and it was clear that it was an intentional attack of some kind. The motivation remained unclear.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I went to work after hearing the news on the radio, and did not see a t.v. until after the towers had collapsed.
I remember hearing that the first tower collapsed. I simply could not believe it. I figured a large chunk of the curtain wall of the building must have fallen, but I could not fathom the building collapsing.
I remember thinking, during the first WTC explosion years before, what a ridiculous idea it was to think you could bring down the WTC! You can't collapse a building of that size.
The entire nation grieved in way that I don't think it ever had before. For days afterwards... we all would find ourselved quietly crying for the magnitude of the human loss. In our grief, we came together as a country.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in my office on 51 Street and Lexington Avenue in New York City. I was looking at emails and some yelled from across the room that a plane hit one of the Twin Towers.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The strongest memory was watching the buildings come down. The horror of knowing that my cousin, Donald T. Jones, II of Cantor Fitzgerald was more than likely dead.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think it has effected everyone in regards to personal safety. Realizing that terror attacks can strike at anytime, has made more aware of our surroundings. Things like "The Go-Bag" would never have been necessary to make if we weren't attacked. To attack innocent people is the most cowardly act anyone can make. But on a positive thought, it has given Americans a new sence of PRIDE in our country and a strength to see us through the difficult times ahead.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work and received a call from my husband who works for a news organization. At work, we quickly hooked up a tv and started listening to the news. I stayed at work and throughout the day we listened to the news. It was difficult to work. After returning home I watched TV news with my family all evening and into the morning.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Seeing the twin towers fall and thinking about all the people in the buildings and the families who were affected by the tragedy
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
There are so many things that affected our country. The strongest one that stands out in my mind is how diverse we are. The population of our country is made up of all races and I think that through the media we were able to see the diverse population of the US. Despite those differences many of us care about each other. It seemed like people were nicer to one another after the attack and continue to be more patient with one another.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was working in the mail room at an engineering company right next to Dulles Airport. Someone got an e-mail about it so we turned on the radio. Then the hooked up some rabbit ears to the conference room tv. Everyone watched silently as they saw the towers being hit. Then we heard word of the pentagon being hit. It felt like the whole country was being attacked and we didn't know who was attacking us. It seemed like there were planes falling every were and we didn't know where the next one would hit. Before long the whole office was in a panic because the pentagon renovation was one of our jobs and we had two techs that were supost to be out there. The radios were all tied up. No one could get a hold of anyone. For many hours we didn't know what happened to them. I don't remember how we got in contact with them, but be were so glad they were safe. One had stopped to get something to eat and had just missed being there and the other had gotten stuck in traffic.
Then two of our engineers got ready to go out to the pentagon for the rescue effort. For the next two weeks one of them was helping with the structural integrity of the pentagon to assist the rescuers. I felt very proud of them.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The sound of silence. When they were grounding all the air planes there came this weird silence. I was so usto hearing the planes from Dulles. I remember looking up into the sky thinking, or more trying to convince myself there really are no planes up there. They were a reality of everyday life that I took for granted.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think it has changed the way we, as a county think, a little for the better and maybe more for the worse. In our fear we are willing to forfit our rights to be safer, or to atleast think that we are safer. I think we may lose many of the freedoms that make this county great in the name of homeland security. I feel more consern and fear of what our country might become because of it's fear, than the terrorists them selves. And if we let fear turn us on eachother and let our government get into our privite lives for the sake of security then the terroists have surely won.
