Judy, Lyndy and all-- Just wanted to ask you to double your efforts at prayers on this and the other attacks today. I'm actually in mid-town Manhattan right now, a couple miles from the World Trade Center. It's just unbelievably horrible. I was in a meeting this morning when we first heard the news -- our conference room had a clear view of the first tower that was hit and burning. Some people saw the plane that hit the second one. We tried to keep our meeting going but as the news kept getting worse, we gave up. Some people were also watching out the window when the tower collapsed. We were so close -- they could see our windows if we could see theirs. And then it was just gone. We have people from our company working in that area -- one of our main buildings is connected to the WTC. We have no word yet on what's happened to our colleagues. We also have colleagues in Washington. One of our colleagues was in a meeting down there and made it out and walked back to our office -- he was saying people were jumping out of the buildings or perhaps falling. People were staring at the buildings and then they collapsed -- he ran over other people to escape. He thought the buildings melted from the heat -- by the time you read this we may know how many firefighters, police and other rescue people were in the area. He said they were all killed when the first building collapsed. I spent the day with a friend and former colleague several blocks from here. When we were walking back to the hotel tonight, we passed a man in camoflage materials covered with dust and carrying a dust mask. The smell coming off him of fire was horrible. I'm stuck in Manhattan for the foreseeable future. I'm keeping in touch with Craig. There are enough people here that I know so I'm OK. I've got a hotel room and can stay with friends if needed. A co-worker who was on my flight coming in Monday morning and I are going to try to get together to see how we can get back to Minneapolis. Just thought you'd want to know. From: To: Sent: Saturday, September 22, 2001 4:02 PM Subject: New York Trip--Part 2 Another strong impression of being in New York during the tragic days after September 11, revolves around a dinner my wife and I had with a friend of ours in the city. The impression has to do with the spirit of the people of this great metropolis. We had passed up getting theatre tickets on Wednesday, September 12 just so we could enjoy a few drinks and a dinner with Jane Marx. Several Alamogordo citizens know Jane because she is a tremendously talented tour guide in the city and has worked with Lonnie Jarrett and Roger Haley when they take theatre groups to Manhattan. To say that Jane is a typical New Yorker is some sort of vast understatement. She is not a typical anything. She is more like a force of nature all bound up in a New York wrapper. She knows New York. It is her town. She knows its history, its culture, its sights and sounds, its nuances. When Jane guides you on a tour she shows you how to survive in New York--with a necessary attitude. We had a date to meet Jane at the Delta Bar and Grill On 48th Street at 9th Avenue. The Delta has good food of the down home type, with a touch of Cajun, in a neighborhood atmosphere. The events of the day before added an immediacy to the renewal of our friendship and to our conversation. I was tremendously eager to hear this New York lady's take on the events. Jane was as stunned as anyone by the events, and, like the rest of us, was looking for some sort of explanation for the unexplainable. But beyond that she was extremely angry. This was her town and someone had tried to take it away from her. This was where she lived and worked and had her being. This had all been attacked for no reason that she could discern and she was mad. It is that spirit and feeling that had impressed me so much the day before when New York immediately responded to the disaster. One of Hitler's greatest mistakes in World War II was the merciless bombing of London and other sites in England. It rallied the English people as nothing else could have. It gave the old lie to the idea that a war can be won simply by the destruction of countless numbers of non-combatants. I remember in those war years how I as a nine through thirteen-year-old-kid was tremendously impressed by the spirit of the Londoners. They were exhausted and stressed by constant threat but they were absolutely defiant. That was basically Jane's attitude, "This is my town and you cannot have it." Jane, who has an outsized sense of humor, spent some time regaling us with stories about the New Yorkers' reaction. She noted funny things that were said while she was standing in line to donate blood--she had been turned away, as had many, because she did not know her blood type and the harried donor center workers did not have time to type blood and draw it at the same time. She was invited back at a less stressful time. She also felt that it was the greatest irony that Washington, D.C.,a town which she and many New Yorkers hold in the greatest disdain, and New York should end up in this same boat. The president had not visited New York at this time and she had heard he would be visiting soon. She noted that New York City had voted against Bush by 80% of its voter turnout. She felt if he visited he would probably lose New York by about 80% at the next election but they would like to see him anyway. She had nothing but praise for Mayor Giuliani, a person she had never liked or voted for. Wife and mistress aside, he had proven worthy of the office and Jane hoped he would stay in office until a sensible primary could be rescheduled. Jane was as confused as the rest of us by a proper course of action for the future. We all had a sense that the threat was still there. New Yorkers are notoriously blasé. When a plane flies over they hardly bother to look up. That changed. Military aircraft were in the air within minutes of the attack and all commercial and private aircraft were grounded. New Yorkers gazed skyward every time a plane flew over. They seemed to have the feeling that another attack was imminent. Jane reflected this nervousness, as if this were not over and a person needed to be ready. That again called to mind the pictures of Londoners in World War II. When our evening came to an end, we walked with Jane--who is one of the world's great walkers, over to Grand Central Station. It was a strange walk for her and for us. She could not help being the tour guide: pointing out places of interest, commenting about how few people there were on the street compared to usual, and generally celebrating our time together. But she was sad. I think Jane knows that New York will never be quite the place she had so deeply loved and cherished. Her own business had already suffered as tours cancelled out in large number, but it was beyond that; it had to do with something spinning out of control and the time it would take to restore sanity and decency. On our walk, we passed a neighborhood fire station. People were gathered in a candlelight vigil. Flowers were stacked in an impromptu altar by the entrance. Evidently, the fire station had lost a member or members of its firehouse gang. This sight was one of the most powerful I saw on our trip. We walked on in silence to Grand Central Station, one of my favorite structures in all of Manhattan. It was ringed by police and tight security. We accompanied Jane inside and exchanged hugs and goodbyes. We told her we would see her in March when we have another trip planned. Dear friends and family, First let me tell you that I am alive and well, no injuries or problems. I've spent the last 36 hours in Harlem pretty much, trying to be ever vigilant. Second, let me say that I am touched by the e-mails and phone calls I got while at work. It's really nice to know that people worry about you, when you don't even sometimes worry about yourself. When I said I wasn't hurt, that's partly true. My heart hurts and I am mentally and physically exhausted. September 11, was the most important day of my young career and certainly the most memorable day I've ever had in my life. I was sleeping on the couches in the precinct when someone woke me up and told me that a plane had hit the WTC. I was shocked, but I knew that our guys would figure it out and that we could fix anything. All that changed when I saw the plane fly into the side of Tower #2. Then I knew, just like the rest of the world what had happened. I remember putting on the kevlar vest and getting the riot helmet out of the bag and shaking while say the Lord's prayer. I was supposed to go to the election detail for the primary elections in NYC, so they wouldn't take me downtown. This was before the cancelled the election. I remember talking to Montu and then the phone went dead. I ran to the TV and saw the tower collapse. My radio was full of people yelling, "It's coming down, get out of there! Run for your lives!" Then the most horrifying sound I've ever heard came out of my radio. It was a female officer, crying and screaming for help, like I've never heard anyone scream. She didn't know where she was. You could hear the cops literally begging her to tell them where she was. And her screams got softer and softer and then they were gone. Literally, 15,000 cops heard another officer die on that radio. We're working 12 hour tours and doys off are cancelled. We're fighting each other to go down to the scene. They only send 8 guys out of about 50, and everyone volunteers. To do something, to do anything. That feeling of helplessness, hearing your colleagues calling for you and you not being able to do a damn thing, makes you sick. Literally you ache. I'm probably going down there hopefully tomorrow. I have no inside gossip. Contrary to popular belief, we get most of our intell. on this from the news too. I just know I wish that day never happened and I never had that radio. Some guys turned them off... But I am fine and there are lots of guys some who I knew, and many who I didn't who aren't. They died after running up into a building that some people were jumping out of. They died heroes and they lived as heroes. Many of my friends were shocked because we all knew if we had been there, we would have done the same thing and we know what would have happened. So pray for everyone, especially the firefighters and the cops and those who gave their lives so that others, may live. I am proud to wear the same uniform that they did. Finally I just wanted to say that everyone talks about WW2, displayed in Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor. About ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances. The critics say we as a nation don't have that anymore, and that's why these movies are so popular. We do, it's just that we pay them 40,000 a year and call them the New York City Fire and Police Departments. And what they say about disasters bringing out the best in people is true. Everyone is here to help us. People are giving blood faster than they can take it. People are meeting at Chelsea Piers to wait for hours to see if they can help in the search. As I was sitting in my patrol car on 125 St, I was a blue fire truck on the corner and I walked up to them and I saw the truck had Rhode Island plates. I talked to them. They were from Pawtucket, RI. They said that they heard there were firefighters trapped and they got in their truck and drove 6 hours to save them. Lights and sirens down I-95. And they were just glad to help out. I thanked them and shook hands and then went back to the car and cried, just like I am now. That was the best thing I'll remember about these past days. God bless you all. I love you and miss you. It is, by virtually any standard, one of the most wretched countries on Earth. And it is a terrible place in which to fight a war. Ask the British. Ask the Russians. To begin with, Afghanistan is 250,000 square miles, about twice the size of Vietnam. In the wounded Pentagon today, the generals are almost certainly urging great caution upon the civilians who run our government. Colin Powell and Anthony Principi â" who heads Veterans Affairs â" the only cabinet members who have ever been shot at, must be doing the same. All military leaders remember that peak American troop strength in Vietnam was roughly 500,000. To match that ratio of troops to land area, the Americans and their allies would need to send in a minimum of a million troops. The country is landlocked, mountainous and arid, with brutal summers and fierce winters. The tallest peak is Nowshak, at 25,000 feet. The southwestern deserts get less than 9 inches of rain a year. Only 12% of the land is arable, and because of a prolonged drought, overgrazing, the cutting of trees for fuel and soil degradation, even that small percentage of land is turning to dust. Twenty-five percent of the population is on the edge of starvation. Farmers have been converted into nomads, searching for water and grass: "The herds are often below a sustainable size," said a report from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. "There are few or no lactating animals, and there are evident signs of dehydration and malnutrition. These nomads are gathering near towns or canals or other potential water sources. The same water is used by animals and by humans for drinking, washing and sanitation." In the event of a prolonged invasion and occupation (what was called in Algeria and Vietnam a "pacification program"), a communications system would have to be built almost from scratch. According to the CIA's country profile, Afghanistan is a country with only 31,200 telephones to serve 26 million people. The only international telephone link runs from western Afghanistan to Iran. There is no national television network, only sporadic broadcasting by local factions. There are five AM radio stations, no FM stations and two shortwave stations. Newspapers are wretched, controlled by the ruling Taliban, and only 31.5% of the population can read. There are 14 airports with paved runways and 32 that use dirt and gravel. Even if neighboring Pakistan agreed to open its airports to the military of the U.S. and its allies, any serious invasion force contemplating "a long war" (as President Bush describes it) would need to build at least one huge in-country airport, on the scale of Vietnam's Cam Ranh Bay. Many of the existing airports are used to maintain the export trade. There is only one lucrative export (other than terrorism): heroin. One Huge Cash Crop Afghanistan is now the world's largest producer of opium, having surpassed Burma in the past few years. It is estimated â" by the CIA, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. State Department â" that in 1999 it produced 1,670 metric tons of opium, up 23% from 1998. Some 51,500 hectares are under cultivation. An intricate shipping network has existed since the time of the 1979-89 war with the Soviet Union, with raw opium base moving into Pakistan for refinement into heroin (and increasingly being refined in Afghanistan itself), and then on to Turkey, Canada and the streets of American cities, including New York. The misery of the inhabitants is appalling. Since the Soviets invaded to aid a Communist government on Christmas Eve 1979, there has been constant war. The Afghans have been fighting outsiders since the time of Alexander the Great and they seem to enjoy doing it. The Soviets abandoned the place in 1989, and a long civil war followed. Afghan killed Afghan, usually over differing interpretations of the Koran, but also to control the drug trade. The human consequences are only suggested by the statistics. The average Afghan life expectancy is 45.8 years. Males live a bit longer than females, because so many women die in childbirth. According to United Nations figures, the infant mortality rate is 161 deaths among every 1,000 live births, the absolute worst in the world â" in the U.S. the rate in 1999 was 7.1. Even with these dreadful numbers, more than half the population is under 14. Many of them could end up as collateral damage. Certainly there will be very few human targets. The rich and the nonfundamentalist middle class fled long ago to Pakistan (along with 2 million other Afghans), leaving behind farmers, nomadic herdsmen and the most marginalized citizens of the capital of Kabul and the few other cities. Reuters reported yesterday that the Taliban leaders are also fleeing Kabul, unconcerned about the corpses that might soon appear on its streets, as long as the female corpses wear veils. Kandahar, in the southwest, is also emptying. Everywhere, food supplies are running low. The currency is worthless paper. Widespread Disease The gathering of medical statistics has now virtually ceased under the Taliban (just another treacherous habit of the West), but the country is filthy with plague, cholera, diphtheria, malaria, meningitis, amoebic dysentery and typhus. The water system, damaged in the endless wars, has been corrupted. Open toilets are everywhere, unflushed, unclean. Rats prowl the cities. Disease must be worse now, not better, than it was at the time of the war with the Soviets. It is definitely a hazard for anyone who walks into the country, holding a rifle. Possibly more dangerous than armed Afghans. Certainly one major cause of the Soviet defeat was disease. About 650,000 Soviet soldiers served in Afghanistan. According to a report by Lt. Col. Lester Grau (U.S. Army, retired) and Maj. William Jorgensen (U.S. Army Reserve), 415,932 â" an astounding 88.6% â" were hospitalized at various times with serious diseases, the most common being infectious hepatitis. To be sure, most of these wounds were self-inflicted. The Soviets ran a slovenly army. Personal discipline was wretched. Food was vile, usually served cold in the field, ladled from silvery tins that flashed welcome signals to their Afghan opponents. In base camps, the cooks were slobs, helping spread disease. There were shortages of purified water, and soldiers often drank local water (hating the taste of the purified version) and quickly fell down in agony. Troops wore uniforms (including 75-pound field packs) suited for a war on the northern plains of Europe, not the mountains of Afghanistan. Their boots were so heavy that many fought battles wearing sneakers. In the later stages of their war (as in the later stages of Vietnam), drugs and alcohol further weakened the ability to fight. That war was the beginning of the end of the Communist empire called the Soviet Union. But for the rest of the world, and now most particularly for New York, the most devastating consequence of the war with the invading Soviets was the rise of the fanatical Islamic fundamentalists. Almost all the radical Muslims now planning and executing terrorism are veterans of the Afghan campaigns. All benefited from the CIA's massive intervention in the war, led by Ronald Reagan's CIA director, William Casey. The plan was simple: Find and enlist as many Muslim zealots as possible. Train them. Arm them. Fund them. And send them against the Russians. Starting Small One of those zealots was the now-famous Saudi Arabian rich boy, Osama Bin Laden, who began as a dilettante of war. His story is well-known. But he wasn't a major figure in Afghanistan. He was a relatively minor player in the very loose resistance called the mujahedeen. The radicals who joined up with the mujahedeen benefited from the $3.5 billion contributed by the CIA, and hundreds of millions in Saudi funds channeled through a CIA account in Switzerland. The British Secret Intelligence Service was also heavily involved in training and dispersing. The control centers were in Cairo and in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Many of the camps now operated by Bin Laden and other radicals, including the Taliban, were built with American money. Most of the radicals were drawn to the fierce Afghan fundamentalism of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, whose group was called Herzb-I-Islam (according to one 1994 report, the CIA/SIS-trained fundamentalists included 2,800 Algerians, 370 Iraqis, 2,000 Egyptians, 300 Yemenis, 200 Libyans). They were tough, ferocious fighters, as motivated as the foreigners who fought for the Spanish Republic in the 1930s. When they received their American-made Stinger missiles, they began hammering Soviet helicopters out of the sky. The war was soon over. They did not all give up the gun when the last Soviet tank rolled over the northern border. Many saw the war as the first stage of a triumphant Islamic jihad against modernity (with its skepticism and doubt), liberalism (with its tolerance and generosity) and all things secular, from dancing to card-playing. In addition to Bin Laden, there were other veterans of the Afghan war who vowed to keep fighting. They went off to other countries, hardened in battle, burning with faith. Civil War Rages Afghan veterans unleashed the revolt in Algeria in 1992, after the army threw out the results of an election that was an apparent victory for Muslim fundamentalists. That war goes on, and has cost at least 100,000 lives, including seven on Friday. Afghan veterans shaped the Armed Islamic Group, started by killing scores of Westerners, murdering Muslim moderates, and over the past year have specialized in massacring Algerian villagers, usually by slitting the throats of men, women and children. Some Afghan veterans have been killed by the army; the war goes on. In Egypt, Afghan veterans started their own campaign, forming a group called Gamat Ismailia. A man named Mohammed Shawky al-Istrambouli was one of the leaders. His brother led the group that murdered Anwar Sadat in 1981. He made contacts with the mujahedeen in 1983, at a forward base in Pakistan, raised funds there, and in Iran, and soon began killing Egyptians. The object was to destroy the government of Hosni Mubarak and create a fundamentalist Islamic regime. After being sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt, Istrambouli found safety in, of course, Afghanistan. His organization agreed to a truce in 1998, but most members are believed to have joined Bin Laden's umbrella group, Al Qaeda (the Base). Istrambouli had many contacts. In 1990, in Pakistan, he met with Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, the blind cleric. The man later convicted of setting up the 1993 assault on the World Trade Center and planning other atrocities in the New York area. Two of the sheik's sons served in the Afghanistan war. At least two of the 1993 bombers had served in Afghanistan. In Israel, Palestinian areas and Syria, Afghan veterans are believed to be active in Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah. Those contacts made in the mountains of Afghanistan most likely remain essential to the various networks of which Bin Laden is at once a part, and through Al Qaeda, a leader. People who were shot at together form personal bonds that almost never break. These surviving groups are well-funded, most likely in devious ways â" with Arab oil states, including Saudi Arabia, bribing them to leave their own countries alone. Some experts fear that a radical Muslim trap is being set, that Pakistan will succumb to the carrot-and-stick pressure and allow the Americans to use it as a base, then a massive rising of fundamentalists would overthrow that government and bring radical fundamentalism to a country that has the atom bomb. "The Pakistani people would never accept an American presence on their soil," said Gen. Hameed Gul, former head of Pakistani military intelligence, in an interview in Paris with Reuters. "The price to pay would be high for everybody. Pakistan would be completely destabilized, and that would have grave repercussions, especially for the United States." French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine agrees. He supports the Americans in their need for justice after the slaughter at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But he warned Sunday against making this too wide and ruthless a campaign. "We have to avoid a clash of civilizations at all cost," he said. "One has to avoid falling into this huge trap, this monstrous trap, even if this was the calculated intention of some." Where's Bin Laden? Nobody is certain about the whereabouts of Bin Laden today. He might have slipped out of his camps around Khost, which survived Soviet missiles, 500-pound bombs and artillery. He might be across the border in Pakistan. It is unlikely that he is where intelligence services think he is. If he is found, and killed, his movement will likely go on, waving the banners of his martyrdom. In this great surge of Islamic fundamentalism, with its longing for the certainties of the 11th century and the lost Islamic kingdoms, there is, alas, no Mr. Big. For too many people, death is a mere step into paradise. But one thing we do know: There in Afghanistan, waiting for the bombs to fall, live some of the most miserable human beings on the planet. For them, dying might be as meaningless as living. It's all still too much to comprehend... trying to wrap my head around the idea of what happened and then along come the almost routine stories of near misses, the questions and uncertainty of what's next... everybody round here walking around in limbo. I'm sittin in the midtown office watching the Trade Center burn from out the window and also on the teevee news. We got a bunch of guys in from Japan to help with the relocation and stuff (three major Japanese banks have merged and for a couple years we'll be helping them get all their stuff hooked together and what-not), so we're scrambling around trying to account for these barely-speaking-English dudes in a strange country in the midst of this madness (as far as I know all were accounted for). As the tower falls the one dude next to me says "I was there yesterday, 92nd floor". The dude next to him mentions that he'd be there right now but the box he was hooking up got delayed in customs. Both of my wife's brothers live close to us out here in Lawnguyland. Her brother John's wife has a brother that has been battling brain cancer for the last couple years. He was a NYPD cop as are his brother and sister-in-law. His condition got bad and they sent him home over the weekend. He died in the early morning hours before the attack. His wife and four of his cousins worked in the Trade Center, plus the cop connection in the family would almost certainly have been involved as well. The news of his passing kept them all from going to work yesterday. How can you figure that if he had lived one more day then perhaps 5 other members of his family may have been lost. Out here at the elementary school parents started to pick up their kids early. Rumors spread among the kids and they finally asked what was going on. One teacher told them "they're crashing planes into buildings in Manhattan". Great. Of course both of my guys are sharp enough to know where I work and to start worrying. My younger guy didn't find out but my older guy was sick over it. The nurse called my wife and she picked em both up, I talked to em on the phone, they're doing ok but still want reassurance that it ain't gonna happen again. I get on the Long Island Rail Road out here at one of the largest stations they have. The parking area is huge and usually fills up by mid-morning. Dudes park everywhere when the spots are gone, park on the grass, on the sidewalk, along the curb of the entrance and exit lanes, etc... When I pull in every morning round 7 AM there's a steady stream of cars slowly filling the parking lot, pretty much in an orderly fashion, close spots first and then spreading until everything is full. Well this morning I pull in and it's this "creepy" sight, like patches of cars here and there. It just strikes me odd and I'm sitting there about to get out and I realize what's wrong. There's a car here on the grass and one there on the sidewalk and everyone has to drive around another in the entrance lane... all of them were parked there the day before. Those are cars of people that went to work that morning and didn't come home that night. When they got the railroad running yesterday to get folks home they had no schedule, they just filled em up and rolled em out, all stops, all aboard. I walked the couple miles to the railroad and got there just in time to squeeze onto the train for about a two hour sardine ride. Everybody kind of numb. Dude squished against the door next to me mentions, to nobody in particular, "I was in the elevator, going up". He was literally seconds away from being above the first blast. I just got off the phone with Gerry, my son. He and his crew had been invited to a party in Manhattan on Monday night, by the financial people he was dealing with for his company. After a late night celebration, they retired to their hotel, the Marriott, in the World Trade Center! Around 9 a.m., Tuesday morning, he was awakened by a very loud sound, the origin of which he could not be sure. So he dozed off again, only to be awakened again by an alarm sounded by the hotel. When he looked out the window he could see falling debris, so he quickly dressed and took his already packed duffel bag with him and left his 10th floor room. (Some of his co-workers were on the 20th floor.) He had absolutely no idea of what had happened, but along with many others, took the stairs down to safety. His friend and co-worker, stumbled on a person in the stairwell, and dislocated his elbow. Gerry said that he has only stayed at this hotel once before. He figured that since he was only going to be there one night, he wouldn't pack more than just a duffel bag. He didn't take his briefcase or computer, so he was out of the room immediately! After reaching the hotel lobby, he saw a scene no one should ever have to see again, and I cannot write what he said. He helped many people who were dazed and in a confused state. He reached into his duffel bag and took out all his T-shirts and tore them up for people to use as masks. There was panic all around him, and when our planes, F-16's (?) came by shortly afterwards, many of the people became hysterical, thinking there would be a repeat of what had just occurred. His cell phone, and most others' as well, was inoperative. He was running from the crime scene, completely engulfed by the huge cloud of smoke and debris, caused by the collapsing of the towers. His voice, now 2 days later, still sounds affected by the pollutants in the air. He said that his adrenalin level was at an extreme high throughout his running to safety, and that he was NEVER so scared in all his life! After crossing the bridge, he saw people wanting to get on the ferries, but he decided that was not the way for him to rejoin his co-workers. It wasn't until he got to Brooklyn that he could use his cell phone. After just sitting still and putting his head down, trying to regain composure, he did manage to contact his co-workers by cell phone, and together they worked out a plan of escape. The woman in his party rented a car. They had earlier decided that the man with the dislocated elbow was not about to get the immediate help he needed, if they had remained there. So they packed his arm in ice and left for home, to Charlotte, North Carolina. They drove all night. The building at which he was staying collapsed at around 5:25 p.m. that day. Meanwhile, the people at his place of business all came over to Gerry and Libby's house, bringing her lunch, and just staying with her. When he finally was able to reach his place of business by phone (Libby's line was busy because everyone was calling her for information about him), they let her know that he was safe, and closed the business office for the day. That same day, my daughter, Mari, let me know that Gerry was OK. He called me yesterday morning, but only talked long enough to let me know that he was OK and on his way to bed. I could tell from his voice that there was more to it than that. He spent most of yesterday either sleeping or working in his woodshop. He is still deeply traumatized by the events, but is physically all right, except for the possible asbestos and other contaminants that he's inhaled. I told Gerry that when I pray, it's always for just two things: continued good health for my entire family, and for their safety in travel. Im one of the luckier parents, in that my prayers had been answered! I'm so relieved, and now feel better after having shared this with you. I'm just writing to gifsve a delayed "my family and I are fine," to send hopes that you and yours are as well, and to send condolences to those who have been more directly effected by last Tuesday's events than others. I also wanted to make sure that people are remaining sane and rational humans after such an inhumane* event. It was unsettling to me, though not very surprising, when I visited CNN.com and saw the results of a quick survey asking something to the likes of "Should the US bomb Kabul if Afghanistan doesn't hand over bin Laden?" The vast majority -- 70-something percent -- said "yes." This was very disturbing to me, and I just want people to consider the long term effects of such a thing, and reconsider their current outlook on the entire situation the nation and our government is in right now. I don't want to waste time and space going into details and issues which have undoubtedly been discussed over and over again in these past few days, but just take a moment and think before screaming for revenge under the guise of "justice." Most of us don't want a war -- at least I hope not. The term war implies nation versus nation, which should not be the case here -- and if I hear Bush say the word in any context other than in the phrase "war against terrorism," I'm moving to Switzerland. Or at least to Canada. In the meantime, I've scraped together this little checklist of things to do.
