<text>damn its been a crazy day.
i had spanish at nine and then went to work straight from that. it wasn't until i got to work that i heard anything happened, and i had to work until 3 so i could't get to any news so all i heard were rumors. then i had english at 3:10 and our proffesor was clearly disturbed by the days events and decided it would be better if we just talked about the attack all class. finally after that was over i got to see some news. they had a giant screen TV set up in the villard room where they were showing the news broadcasts. there were also phones for people to call relatives. and everyone was realy quiet and some people were crying. they showed the towers collapsing and the people running from the huge clouds of debris. it was way intense and somber. it was surreal. and now i'm back in my room doing homework and it doesn't seem like anything happened. its interesting to see how disturbed people are and then when you read about the people who died, then think about the news we get every day and how we can shrug off people getting killed in isreal, or in indian earthquakes, or other places and it doesn't bother anyone until it happens here. i think it has alot to do with the fact that the attack destroyed not only people and property but our sense of safety and comfort. i think i'm going to go give blood. initially they said they were running shuttles to the civic center tommorow to donate, but now i think they aren't doing it until thursday.

love. </text>

              <text>Hi Sue and Viv,

My internet connection has been out since late yesterday, and the phones have been unreliable. It took several hours for Lizzy to get through to us and we couldn't reach her either. I have been able to speak to Liz and Mike and let them know that I was all right. Yesterday was a truly horrible day. It still hasn't fully sunk in. I was fortunate to have been out of the area when the first tower collapsed.

I got into work at 6:45 and worked at my desk all morning as everyone else came in. At around 8:45 a bunch of people rushed to the window and started shouting about a fire in the World Trade center. One of them even said a plane had flown into it, and I thought he was joking. But CNBC was on the TV, we have TV's tuned into CNBC on all around the office all day, and at that time it started showing pictures of the tower burning. Through the window of the office I could see papers flying through the air. We're on the 18th Floor of 110 Wall which is all the way on the end of Wall Street by the river. It's about 8 or 10 blocks from the World Trade Center. As a matter of fact my usual way into work was to take the E train to the Last stop and walk out through the World trade center Mall and exit from building number 4. I'm hearing reports that 1 Liberty Plaza is in danger of collapsing, which is another building I pass every day. Sue, you know the area very well since you worked only two blocks away from the Twin Towers. Thank God you were down in Florida.

Anyway, we were watching reports on TV and no one really knew exactly what happened; we started to hear reports that it was in fact an Airplane. Some people said immediately that it must have been a terrorist attack, but I couldn't believe that. Suddenly we heard a tremendously loud explosion and the building shook. I looked at the TV and saw the fireball burst out of the side of the building. It was unbelievable, we were all shocked. When the reporters said that it was a second airplane flown into the other tower and everyone realized immediately that it really was a terror attack there was a lot of shouting and cursing but most of the guys were like me, shaking their heads and trying to take it all in.

It was shortly afterwards that there were announcements that the NYSE was being evacuated. Soon we were told that trading would be suspended for the day. Since there was nothing any of us could do because there would be no trading, we each got our things together and prepared to leave. Some people were worried that there would be other attacks and were worried about the subways, bridges and tunnels. Some people wanted to get closer to the building to get a look at what was going on. Most people thought that was a pretty stupid idea and just wanted to contact their loved ones and get home as soon as possible. I called Ma and told her I would be heading out, but had no idea how long it would take me to get home. I knew that subway service in the area, if it was still running would soon be suspended. I planned on walking as far north as I could and catching whatever train I could out to Queens. Fortunately one of the people I work with, Chris, had a car parked nearby and offered me and another coworker, Cory, a ride to midtown. Three of us walked along Water St. to the parking lot. People were gathered at the corners of the sidestreets where they could get a clear view of the Twin Towers. The whole scene was surreal, I looked up every once in a while, the holes in the sides of the buildings were huge extending across several floors and different sides of the building. Flames and smoke were shooting out of the building and you could see the twisted metal. It was like something out of a movie. At the parking lot I had a wide unobstructed view of the two towers and I was thinking that New Yorkers coming to work tomorrow and for a long time to come would be looking up and seeing this and be constantly reminded of these mind boggling events, little did I know. The damage seemed to be confined to the top quarter of each building.

We got into my friends car and were fortunate to get quickly onto the FDR drive. We followed a police car that was pushing it's way through traffic. They must have been shutting the highway down because traffic was completely stopped southbound in the other direction, but there were very few cars going north, and those that were were moving fast. We had the radio turned on and heard the report that there was a fire in the Pentagon and a little later that it was another plane crash. I must have been missing a beat the whole day, because I thought that this had to be some kind of a wild rumor and couldn't possibly be true. When we got to 42nd, Cory and I got out of the car. We heard that one of the towers had collapsed. From what I saw of the damage, and remembering that the towers had stood after the attack in '93 which occurred at the base of the building, I once again made an incorrect assumption that it had been the top of one of the towers only that had collapsed. Even that seemed too devastating and I couldn't imagine the devastation at the foot of the building. Cory walked me over to the 7 train subway entrance and we wished each other well. I was able to get on a train quickly and it headed out of Manhattan. The first stop on the other side of the river is Vernon/Jackson ave. The train stopped and it was announced that all Subway services had been cancelled, but at least I was back on Long Island. I came out of the Station and started asking directions, hoping to catch a bus. One of the people I asked was saying how unbelievable it was that one of the towers had collapsed. I said that I had heard that the top of one of the towers collapsed. He said to me no, the whole tower had collapsed, and pointed over my shoulder. I turned around and could see a cloud of smoke and only one of the Twin Towers standing. I was stunned, I was seeing it but it was too much to take in, it was like a bad movie. I turned and started walking towards Queens Blvd, which was about a mile or two away. People were standing on the sidewalks looking toward the city shaking their heads in disbelief. About 10 minutes later a person in front of me said, "My God, the tower's collapsed!" I said, "You saw it?" He said, "No, Just this second, the tower collapsed!" I turned around and there was the New York skyline, changed forever. People were stunned, their mouths open. There were women on the street crying. I continued on my way home. Because there were no trains running, the buses were so packed that none of them were stopping. There were cabs, but they were occupied and I didn't have cab fare anyway. I kept walking along Queens Blvd about 6 or 7 miles till I got home at around one o'clock. Mom was greatly relieved to hear me at the door, she was very shaken up watching the devastation on TV. I was incredibly blessed to have gotten out of the area and off of Manhattan so quickly.

I'm like you guys, taking this in slowly, the horror of all this is too much. I go to church with a woman who worked on the 37th floor of one of the towers. I was able to find out that day that she was all right. I have another friend that I went to NYU night school with that worked on the 80th floor of the second tower to be hit. A mutual friend has promised to call me or email me when he finds out anything. A couple of the people I work with now come into NY on the Path train and would have been arriving that morning around the time of the first plane crash. I'm hoping that they were turned back before the train got to the World Trade center station. A good friend of mine from my old job was working in the world trade center a few months ago. I believe that all of our offices were moved to Jersey City a few weeks ago, I'm waiting to find out and hopefully he's safe.

It's amazing how many people have been calling me and trying to contact me by email. Phone service and the internet have only been working intermittently. It's gratifying to know how many people care about you at a time like this. The magnitude of this is going to take weeks to fully comprehend. For now trading is still suspended on the Stock Exchange. Even after it starts I don't know whether or when our offices will be opening. Going back into Manhattan will be like entering another country, a different world.

Take care of yourselves, Luke

Subject: [talkling] School Starts and Life gets back to normal
Oddly, we have not heard from our son Sean. He graduated from NYU, moved to France
and obtained his dual citizenship, moved back to NY, brought over a young Portuguese fiancée,
went back to France and married her, moved back to NYC, then to France, then to... - and then sort
of drifted out of daily, weekly, monthly communications with us. He has an apartment in Jersey
City, just outside NYC, and has been studying to prepare for the law boards. He lives on about
fifteen hundred a month, which places his living standard slightly above a migrant farm worker in
Jersey City, but would provide a comfortable life in Portugal or Paris. If he is in Jersey City, it is
odd he has not called us. If he is in Portugal or France, it might be understandable. If he is in
Europe, I would not know who or where to call. If I call his grandmother in Paris even hinting I am
concerned I would instantly turn her into a Whirling Dervish. My brothers and I have sent express
mail packages to the Jersey City address containing postage paid self-addressed return envelopes,
but have not received any response. He turned 25 on Sept 2 and did not contact us for his birthday.
I turned 39+ yesterday, and he did not contact me. Given the distractions provided by his new wife,
I can imagine we are on his back burner.
Monday morning, six days after the day, my wife and 16 year old left for work and school
at 7AM. I took Tracy, 11, to the A train subway uptown to 59th where we transferred to the uptown
2. Normally the 2 is an express and bypasses 59th, but Monday it was an uptown local. Tracy was
quite upset about taking the express 2 when she always normally takes the local 1 train. Before she
asked, I told her I would come to the school to pick her up.
After dropping her off, I returned the 72nd subway stop only to find the station jam packed
with people highly trained in alternate side parking extending their skills to master alternate side (of
the platform) boarding as they shuffle back and forth from the local and the express sides of the
platform, all in vain attempts to get into overloaded downtown trains. I gave up and started walking
down Broadway, wondering a bit about whether I was contributing to inflation or deflation by
paying for a subway ride I did not take. I think that is inflationary, but I may be wrong. If I had
borrowed the money for the token, that would certainly have been inflationary. Many stores and
businesses had small memorials strewn with flowers and pictures of the missing. Every so often,
there was a street blocked off, I do not know why. Some blocked streets seemed to have a firehouse
memorial full of pictures of the fallen city workers. Many local people had brought flowers, cards,
letters, and posters. Classrooms of children have made posters and murals to express thanks and
regret.
Some firehouses lost all their firemen. One on the upper East Side, I believe, lost six. Given
that hundreds of police(wo)men, fire(wo)men, and volunteers were lost, every community has lost
some local friends. My children visited the local fire station in happier days several times with their
schools as little kids. I remember our son sliding down the pole fifteen years ago. At school, Tracy
told me after I got her back, that her class made signs and cards for the local firemen and policemen
lost and then walked to the stations to deliver them. That was the main focus of her day.
I decided to walk all the way home (72 blocks) to see what path Tracy would take if she
ever did walk home. Avenues go North/South and streets go East/West except for Broadway, which
follows an original Indian trail at least that is what they told us in the jury duty handout. Tracy
would not be able to follow Broadway across 6th or 5th avenues. She would end up walking down
6th Avenue. Nice to know for future reference. I studied the things that she would notice if she
were on 6th avenue and had lost her (Broad)way.
About 60th Street, while I was wandering around looking like a tourist in my new city, a
blind woman was trying to get her bearings. The sidewalks and crossings had a lot of things on
them that are not usually there, such as police cars garbage trucks, police barricades, flower
memorials, huddles of people looking at missing persons pictures, puddles of water from hydrants
that had been tested, and so on. There also seemed to be more people than normal on the street,
perhaps because, like me, they gave up on the subway. She was tapping a large empty cardboard
box with her white cane. I asked her if I could help. She wanted to get to the uptown bus stop to get
to 71st Street. Deciding to reverse my direction and wander North, I told her that I was on my way
to visit the school at 70th street, and perhaps to the pastry shop at 72nd - which makes my older
daughter's favorite apple turnovers. Too oily, sour, and mushy for my taste, but they do use fresh
apples. I prefer the apple turnover from the bakery at 2nd avenue and 8th street, a tad sweet for
most perhaps, but full of slightly crisp cinnamony apples, probably mutsus, and distinctly
wholesome.
She gave me tips about the local blintzes and layer cakes she knows of. I am much more
into fruit tarts than she is, although being from North Carolina, I think she must like sweet potato
pie and the like. We discussed the Gorilla exhibit at the Bronx zoo and the touching aquarium at the
aquarium where kids can hold a horseshoe crab - two places our family had recently visited. I
talked about reading machines, a main focus of my attention for the past two years. I have cheap,
cheap, cheap gizmo's to help me. I scan in everything (pdf, 600dpi) and enlarge it on my computer
screens. Apparently a device (ccd camera) and a converter/modulator to project the image on a TV
screen costs 300 dollars for the sight impaired I would like to work with people to design and build
a simple camera device to connect to a TV to project images. We touched on the WTC disaster, but
had no time to talk about it since we arrived at the church where she was attending a funeral.
Turning South, I walked down Bway to Sixth, and then down to 14th Street, where I
crossed over to Union Square Park. A large memorial to the missing. Letter size posters bear
pictures of people singly and in family type situations. 'Missing father, 45 years old, tattoo of lion
on back, pierced ears and jade earrings, gold wedding band says: Forever True.' Some, more in tune
with recent radio requests for DNA samples and dental records, give similar descriptions, but add:
'missing two lower right molars' or 'broke right forearm in two places as a child.' Almost all
descriptions are in English, although from the names, pictures, and overall look, one might guess
that they were bilingual or their native language did not have Anglo Saxon roots. It is difficult to
describe your loved one to the missing person's people if all that might be recognizable is a forearm
or a lower jaw. I have never thought of myself as 'has chipped bone in knuckle joint of left middle
finger' or 'broke second toe on left foot at age 50.' I never envied people with stainless steel hip
joints, but in some situations, they have a leg up on others. I suppose I should start of think of my
family, myself, and anyone, in terms of their bite and deformations of their skeletal structure.
At home, I unpacked the closet that I had hurriedly filled before learning NYC. My usual
way of cleaning up the living room is to throw everything into the closet in a sort of hash file.
Although my years of scientific and engineering training taught me to respect scientific
instruments, I had abused my telescope badly. I disassembled the telescope and repacked it
immediately after the second WTC tower collapsed. I do not know why I did that. Probably
because I did not want my children to look through it if they came home. I do not even remember
putting it away, but in my cleaning up and repacking the telescope, I had pushed it into the carrying
case so hard that I broke off the sighting scope. The telescope was not repacked, it was jammed into
the box with such force that it crushed and crumbled all of the white styrofoam. I do not even
remember carrying out the trash, but I threw away the terrestrial and celestial mountings, all my
moon filters, a handful of my eyepieces, and one leg of the tripod. I do not even know why I carried
out the garbage in the middle of the afternoon. I have no memory of any of it. I no longer have a
useable telescope. Mine was destroyed by the WTC collapse.
Emailers have asked why I have a powerful telescope that only sees things upside down.
Several reasons. Decades ago, my brother, who works at Lockheed-Martin on guidance systems,
gyroscopes, and celestial navigation systems that orient satellites, once came to my apartment and
informed me that those lights in the sky that I thought were helicopters hovering over Brooklyn and
Staten Island were in fact the gods Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn on their chariot rides across
the night sky. I much prefer classical explanations of the starry vault to modern lifeless descriptions
of orbiting planets. Originally the scope had a prism that made things right side up. But observing
birds in NJ with children fighting over whose turn it was to look, this device was gobbled up by the
Jersey swamps. The main thing I have used it for in the past years is observing the Peregrin falcons
that live on the ledges of high buildings and eat the pigeons. Yes, after a while you get used to
seeing everything upside down. Yes, it does see in people's windows, but in New York City, people
do on the roof and in the parks along the Hudson River anything they do in their apartments, so
there is no reason to look in windows. Also, Alfred Hitchcock provides strong arguments against
looking into windows. No, it was not expensive. I found it in the garbage room years ago.
After working at home on my NYU course readings, I started back on the subway at 2:40 to
get to the 72nd St school by 3 or so. Tracy likes to hang out a bit a talk to chums and to eat the
candy we deny her at home. The subway had a delay. The normally downtown track, that was
exceptionally an uptown track because of bridge repairs, was temporarily handling an overload and
taking normal downtown trains that that should have been exceptionally on the uptown track. As
clear as mud, as my mother often said. I asked the conductor riding on the train. He did not know
the details because he was usually on another line. I got on the correct uptown S (the S means
special or shuttle, depending who you ask, and the time of the day). I waited a long time in the
subway, I think while downtown express trains went downtown on the uptown local track, and so
on. At 4:15 got to the locked school, entered through the rear cafeteria entrance, climbed the stairs
and picked up Tracy. She was not worried and knew I would get there, but she was getting hungry.
I had brought her sliced cucumbers.
We walked to 59th Street, past a large hospital whose 35 foot long 6 foot high front wall
was covered with missing person's pictures, flowers, and religious looking things. The biggest
displays I have seen are at the Lexington Armory, which I understand is a morgue, and Union
Square Park. The radio reported that people run up to the morgue delivery trucks with pictures and
ask the drivers and workers if they have seen this person.
The A train express zipped us to West Fourth in minutes.
Odd thoughts cross my mind. Wave, a Sioux Indian who grew up on the South Dakota
reservation, designs beautiful jewelry that sends my sixteen year old daughter and her friends into a
swoon. We visited his show at a gallery on Third Avenue just off 2nd street about two weeks ago.
He is making me silver inlaid cufflinks, as a present for having invited him to Christmas dinner.
After some thought, I realized that I have not owned a shirt that has cufflinks in fifteen years. So
we decided that he will make me a crucifix from tubular silver, sort of a Sioux interpretation of the
Salvador Dali crucifix that I like. I asked him how much such a work would cost if he made it in
platinum. He did not know, and it made no difference, because he said platinum melts at a very
high temperature, and it impossible to work with without special furnaces and torches. I settled for
silver, but now I am thinking of a ring in platinum with my name and social security number in it. I
would wear a fraction of my 401k plan on my finger as a hedge against inflation or deflation, I
forget which, and just in case. Apparently such a ring would have rolled out of the WTC fire
unscathed.
A friend who has a Labrador Retriever said that there is great concern over dogs and cats
that have lost their owners. Many of the victims were unmarried single people who lived alone.
They left in the morning intending to come home and feed their pet by suppertime. These animals
may last a couple of weeks without food, but they cannot last without water after they have drunk
the little bit in the bottom of the toilet. Christine, my son's wife, has two cats I think.
Someone mentioned that there cannot possibly be any records of the tourists who were
visiting the observation tower and restaurant at the top of the WTC. Many tourists flying or out of
the airports often go there on their first or last day in the city. Tess' high school friend said that a
German couple visiting her family went to the WTC that morning to buy souvenirs and they were
two blocks from the WTC when it collapsed. They ran and escaped the dust cloud. They had
intended to go at least an hour earlier, but had overslept.
If you want to capture the spirit of NYC, take the whole family to the next funeral in your
town, perhaps of a young person killed in an auto accident, and bring a picnic lunch. Hang back,
since you are not part of the funeral, and just watch the grief. After the ceremony, go off and spread
out your blanket and have your wine and cheese. Take off your shoes and dig your toes into the
grass and think of how nice it is to be alive. While the kids examine gravestones to find the ages of
the people under them, mom and dad can taking turns reading Spoon River Anthology. Try to guess
what occupation matches each poem: janitor, bond trader, elevator dispatcher, fire(wo)man,
window washer... When your kids ask, why did we do this? You figure out a response, but be sure
too mention that the family will go on such picnics again, and again, as the workers gradually
unearth the thousands of victims over the next month or so, and more people post placards detailing
the bone structures of relatives and friends as hope turns to desperation.
Tracy made me a birthday card: "Dear Daddy, You mean so much to me, you mean the
galaxy to me. I also love to be with you. Now you are a big 61 years old and the best father in the
world. I love you so much and have a great year. Happy birthday. Love, Tracy" Her homemade
card looks like many of the posters, except Tracy has drawn my picture (emphasizing my rather
thick magnifying eyeglasses), while all posters have a genuine photograph and more physical
descriptions.
Makeshift memorials have sprouted on the windows of pizza pie shops, delicatessens,
Starbucks, and supermarkets everywhere. Six Avenue had three memorials covering the windows
of three supermarket size stores on one block. Some are handmade posters with prints glued on.
Some are clearly made by children, and signed with a child's scrawl, and these are often illustrated
with flowers, stars, and stick figures. Others are color Xerox pages with pictures printed. Typical:
Missing Person. Manuel Rodriguez, delicatessen delivery man delivering to 98th floor of WTC2.
Age 23. Tattoo of bird on left arm, large hoop gold earring on right ear. Few are dated, but one can
estimate the date. I judge this to be an early announcement when hopes existed since it only
mentions properties of the flesh and not the bones. Tooth and bone descriptions are more typical of
the latter announcements, as the true dimension of the tragedy sinks in to those who compose these
Missing Person announcements, who now presumably, are assembling bags of hair samples, dirty
underwear, and dental records of their husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, and
children to bring to the morgues.</text>

              <text>Dear Jason,
It was good to hear your voice. This is my first chance to email you, and I just want to say that we are okay. I will talk to you later and at length, I'm sure, about the weeks events. It has been the most unreal thing, and Im sure that we will never be the same, who knows if any of us will. I bet it was particularly troubling for you, in that you have spent the most time here in NY --- its your town too.

Everything I think to write or say about this sounds more and more like some terrible cliche. I dont know what else to say about it. I can now only recount the facts, the bare bones of what transpired, from my point of view. We had a straight-shot view of the twin towers and watched the fire burning, the second plane ram into the second tower, the fall of Tower #2, and the final death when Tower #1 collapsed. It was and still remains too much to put into words. It would have been quite different, still horrific, but so much more different had we not seen it -- in real time, looking at it from our windows. We were sitting around having a leisurely morning, sipping coffee and enjoying the quiet before Coy woke up.

Call me whenever you can, email anytime. I am working tomorrow (Sat.), but otherwise -- anytime is good.

It may sound strange, but Im glad that Im here. I think it would actually be too much to bear if we lived far away. We have done a lot of walking around the city since this happened. Everywhere you go, silence. People are so serious and sincere. It is easier to mourn here, everyone is feeling a lot of pain and some fear, I think, and at least you dont feel alone in the pain. Let me tell you, I dont think youd recognize the way it feels here right now. Its very strange, a bit spooky. F-16 fighter jets flying around constantly, police sirens and fire trucks, and people jump if they hear a big sound or boom but other than that...silence.
So, my dear brother, I look forward to talking to you. We are safe, and doing okay.
Keep in touch --
Love,
Lisa </text>

              <text>Hi,
Just a quick note to let everyone know i am okay. We saw the fire on tv and ran downtown to see it. I was on my cell with my mom telling her what i was looking up at when the first tower collapsed. My friend and I were about 8 blocks away looking up at the towers. As it all came down around us we ran. We were running with all the crowds up the streets of Manhattan to get away. We were crying because I had seen people jump and wave from the towers just before. I thought we were going to die when I saw that building come down. It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen in my life. This is something you could never imagine. People were panicking. It was just like when the aliens blew up the empire state building in Independece Day. I thought it was coming for me. I am sorry I dont know what else to say. I have been interviewed on the phone by CTV and CBC in Newfoundland which was broadcast nationally. I have been interviewed by the Calgary Herald. My mom was interviewed live by a Calgary radio station. I have been asked to go to ABC studios in New York to be interviewed live on VTV news in Vancouver. I have to be there in an hour. I will be on the 5 and 6 pm news tonight. It will be broadcast live nationally in Canada on CTV. I will get back to everyone later. I love you all. I will keep you updated.

In case you didn't have the opportunity to attend last night's "vigil" in
Liberty Square in Ellenville, I think you should know who was responsible.
(Some of our ECS students and staff were there.)

Tony Percoco, a former active ETA member and now on the School Board,
organized the event. He did this in less than 24 hours with no use of the
usual media notifications. Most of it was word-of-mouth (I heard an
announcement in the MS the last period of the day) and quickly produced
flyers in store/business windows. More than 200 people arrived before 7
p.m., most in need of some connections with other people. Standing in front
of the American flag, draped from the overhang at Friend Center, an honor
guard, not moving at all, held flags. Tony was the MC, introducing
community leaders and clergy. Rev. Collins, also a member of our school
board, really affected so many of us as he spoke about the tragedy and the
effect. Our own Chamber Singers sang while everyone lit the candles they
brought with them. We all sang "God Bless America" some people with tears
in their eyes.

After the completion of the "program," lit candles were placed on the
circular area by the fountain. Many people remained, talking with others,
expressing the gratitude for having the opportunity to be together.

As Steve and I walked back home after attending a show at Shadowland, we
stopped in Liberty Square, standing and looking at the candles still
burning, more than 2 hours since they were placed there. Someone had set up
a spotlight toward the American flag. I know we always "pledge allegiance
to the flag" with our students, but not always having a true understanding
of how special it all is.

I sent an email to Tony last night, thanking him.

Today there is a special Harvest Festival Day in Ellenville. If you attend,
walk by the fountain. You'll see the candle wax on the side as a tangible
reminder of what occurred.

Enjoy your weekend with your family and friends. I know I'm going to spend
some extra, quality time with mine.

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know, Bill and I are fine. Bill watched the plane fly over him, into the Pentagon and I was inside when it hit. We appreciate all the calls and emails but we are on 12 hour shifts and days off don't exist, so we will call everyone when we get the chance. Thanks for the calls and email, its nice to know so many people love us!
Take care,

              <text>Hi, all...

First off, my prayers are with everyone in the country, and around the world today, affected by this tragedy.

I want to thank the WWWAC list - You served as my, and the rest of United Flight 425, from Newark to Colorado's link to the outside world for about 20 minutes.

I boarded that flight at Newark at 7:40 in the morning. There were 14 flights ahead of us for takeoff, according to the pilot. I nodded off.

The pilot came back on when we were fourth for takeoff, telling us that something was wrong with the World Trade Center, and we'd be waiting on the runway for a few minutes.

I pulled out my Visor and wireless modem, and instantly checked my email. As I was, the pilot announced that a plane accidentally flew into the World Trade Center. Everyone looked to their left out of the plane, and sure enough, there was smoke coming off the horizon.

That's when I got the first few emails from the list, talking about it. Within 2 more minutes, I'd found out about the Pentagon as well.

I became the link to the outside world for the next 15 minutes, with the flight attendants and passengers waiting for the 30 second email checks. I read them off as I got them.

The pilot came back on and said we were returning to the gate. We all sat down. In all the time I've been flying, that moment was the scariest time of my life. We barreled back to the gate faster than I've ever seen it before. Something in my mind just told me to get off the plane and turn in my ticket. At that point, the airport was still open.

We got outside of the gate, and that's when it hit me - I was looking at the skyline, and one of the towers was NOT THERE. That was the first time I realized the magnitude of what happened.

We waited at the outside of the terminal for about 3 hours - I wound up finding about 5 people, all of whom didn't know each other, but sort of came together as a group. My visor was overloaded at that point, and I couldn't get a signal. But my Motorola Timeport 2 way pager was still on, and I was able to send messages to my parents, finding out that they were both ok.

Finally, we found a bus that was able to take us to another terminal, where we waited... A guy in a van came by, and took me and my five new friends to the Marriott, still on airport property.

We hung out in their bar for about five hours, it was around 6pm by this time. Somehow, I managed to get a room at the hotel, and I grabbed my new friends, and we went and washed our faces for the first time in about 12 hours.

We went downstairs afterwards, and sat on the lawn, on the grass. It was surreal - the smell of the grass, a beautiful sunset, and in the background, smoke, soot, dust, and a hole where the world trade center used to be. Truly, truly surreal.

We went back upstairs, and just fell asleep. Totally exhausted. Left the television on, and six people, none of whom had ever met before, 2 of whom spoke Japanese and very little English, all fell asleep on a king size bed, all holding each other.

Woke up early this morning, and no cars were going in or out of Newark. We gathered our suitcases, and started walking. We walked out of the hotel, and out of the airport. We walked on the roads, on the ramps, until we got onto Route 9 North. A poultry truck stopped for us, and told us he could get us to right outside of downtown Newark. We thanked him, and climbed into the back of the truck. Once we got to downtown Newark, we walked a few more miles to the PATH train, which was running to 33rd St. We got on the train, and got to Penn Station.

I walked out of Penn Station, looked up 8th avenue, looked down 8th avenue, and started crying, as I started walking home to my apartment on 43rd St.

If I can help anyone in any way, please let me know - whatever I can do.

Stay safe, God Bless... We WILL get through this horrible act of senseless violence and terrorism, and we will be stronger from it.

Good luck to all,

-Peter Shankman

Yes I'm here. Just ran into [our CEO] in the hall looking horrible. We could see the towers burning -- some people saw the 2nd collapse. Our meeting is cancelled for today. We're going to resume tomorrow since we're probably going to be here for several days longer than planned.

<text>> Mel...has there been any word on Diana & her
> husband? (Still hoping for the
> best)

Diana emailed a list she owns a few hours ago. She and
her husband are fine, though they probably won't be
able to go home today (they're at his office). I don't
know about my best friend, but I asked my mom about
the location of the school where she works and she
said it is quite a distance from the World Trade
center, so I feel better. I doubt she'll be able to
get home, though, as she lives in Queens.

My school has closed for all evening classes.

Emergency workers from my parent's city of
Charlottesville are heading up here to be stationed in
Fredericksburg, as Fredericksburg emergency workers
have been sent to DC.

As for the fact that all the planes were headed
towards the West Coast, it is believed that they were
chosen because they had the most fuel on board, and
would not only explode with more force but would
continue to burn. The bastards truly thought it out.

While all commercial aircrafts have been grounded,
jets can be heard here (Fredericksburg is about 40
miles south of the Pentagon) flying overhead.

I babysit for a family whose father works at the DoD,
which is headquartered in the Pentagon. Those of you
who pray, please direct your thoughts towards their
family and his safe survival of this attack.

And as for the Palestinians celebrating the loss of
life, I sincerely wish someone would go in there and
shoot the fuckers.

              <text>Hi Everyone,
Even though I too was on a flight bound for LAX on 9/11...I am alive and well. (:-)
I was on my way to a meeting in MSP when the captain informed us of what had just happened in NYC.
My flight was a 757 which left Boston at 7:50am. AA was also a 757 which left Boston at 7:52am, UAL also was a 757 which left Boston at 8:14. THE ONLY difference was that my flight was making a stop in MSP and did not have as much fuel as the other planes. We made a very quick landing in Saginaw, MI and there I stayed for the next three days. When it was determined that Boston may be closed for several days, I along with three other managers rented a car and drove 18 hours nonstop to get back home.
Today however, I will be returning to NYC to assist both LGA and JFK airports with "Stress Management" for the Flight Crews." (I know....I WILL BE HELPING THEM.) (:-)
With that said....I do not know if I will be gone for two days, or two weeks, so please take care, and if you have any questions....please feel free to call Maureen. (I just bought her a "stack of paper and pens" so that she will be able to "take lots of notes." (:-)

Hope you all are doing well, and saying lots of prayers. With that said...it is time for me to get ready for my 8:00am mass.

                                                                  Love,

Today we find we were well advised to eat take in last night. The city is closed to all traffic south of 14th street. Nothing comes in. There are no newspapers for sale or for delivery, no fresh food, no mail delivery, no sanitation trucks, no deliveries to bars or restaurants, no Fed Ex or UPS, no plumbers, none of the constant construction of NYC life, no fresh laundry. At 14th Street, police barricades turn back everyone without proof of residency somewhere in the streets below. No one can just go to work. Most shops are closed. Grocery stores are gouging a bit, although Mayor G. says arrests will be made for that. I bought a peach, the last loaf of raisin bread (absolutely no bagels south of 14th St) and a bottle of tonic (as in "gin and tonic"). No traffic at all on the streets except for the occasional police car or truck. We are all walking down the middle of 7th Avenue looking out for rollerbladers. Then an F16 screams and wheels overhead, something that never happens in NYC. (It is interesting that you could live in Manhattan all your life and very easily forget two important facts if you were not careful, simply because the evidence never really presents itself to you unless you seek it out: 1) that Manhattan is an island; 2) that the US has an army or airforce.)

Over by the river, along the West Side highway, traffic going north is heavier than in the middle of the island--it is made up of ambulances on the way to one of the 100+ hospitals taking the injured, dumptrucks, buses of rescuers going off shift. As these vehicles leave lower Manhattan they pass through ranks of New Yorkers who are there just to see them and as they pass through the crowds applaud and whistle and cheer the workers on. "Street people" at the intersection of Christopher and the highway hold up handletterd signs of almost mawkishly sentimental protestations of how much they love America. Yuppies and Boomers more discreetly clap and wave. Hand painted t-shirts are here and there, but not many. No one is selling anything.

Our car is parked still and the pier is now inside the perimeter. I will have to bring all kinds of proof of ownership when I come for it. I am glad it's not at the Volvo dealership, however. Meanwhile we are all rescheduling our lives. My classes are not meeting and the library exercises I had scheduled for my doctoral students at the Schomburg Center for Research In Black Culture had to be cancelled when the Center decided at 3 to close at 5. Nan stayed home and worked since the Graduate Center was virtually closed. We are getting on each others nerves and suppose that even though this is not what was meant by terrorism bringing the war home, it's uncomfortable enough. Our good friend Jim had planned a 60th birthday party for himself this Friday, all of it below 14th Street and one part, a sail around the harbor for 2 hours with drinks on a chartered sloop, was to originate just abeam the WTC. All of that is off limits now.

Oh well, New Yorkers are comporting themselves well; there has been no looting or civil unrest that anyone has noticed. But
I am waiting for the shock of the numbers and the real stories of people who wait all night for wives and husbands and lovers who never phone, miss that secret tryst, left one last, unthinking phone or email message. I am waiting to see if I will have enough money to retire anytime soon. Like every New Yorker I am trying to second guess the real estate market now and looking at the impact of all this on my NYState tax-free bonds. Life goes on in its own heartless way and although we are only 15 blocks north, we are as insulated from that cataclysm, at this moment anyway, as you might feel yourself to be. The political rhetoric of American resolve and the strength of freedom seems beside the point to the argument raised by the terrorists. This is not about our freedom--it is about our government's foreign policy. Will someone who counts say that this war on us is about Israel? I doubt it.

Hi Grandma and Michel,
This is Matt. Mica and I are ok. The long distance lines are all down
around here and I just now set up my internet service in NYC. I do
actually work within ten blocks of the trade center and just happened to
be getting off the subway line this morning when the second plane
crashed, which I saw firsthand. Pretty scary. Mica and I are alright,
however. I'll try and talk more later.
Love,
Matthew

<text> I can remember September 11, 2001 like it was yesterday. It was a pretty Tuesday morning. I went to my Mass Communication lab, at 9:00am not knowing what would take place while we were in class. When I got out around 11:00am and walked through the Commons, it was like total chaos had broken out. People were screaming, crying and looking the televisions. So I stopped and watched too, I didnt get it at first but then the second tower was hit and I was like oh my God, it looked like something out a movie. Then the Pentagon was hit and the plane was found in Pennsylvania. This was unreal the World Trade Center had toppled over like five minutes and people were jumping out the window from like the 80th floor still hoping to survive.
I ran back to the dorms to call my mother from my cellular, but know one could use their phones, too many people were trying to use them at once. I was so worried about my brother because he goes to Old Dominion University, which has the home of the Naval Fleet right down the street. Who knew who was going to be attacked next? I was scared for myself as well because VCU is in the heart of Richmond, our state capital of Virginia that has federal buildings and National Guard offices. My friends and I were scared to death. Finally my mother called me, she said hadnt gotten in touch with Neal (my brother) yet but was sure he was going to be O.K. I talked to my mother for so long. We were crying and just in disbelief that someone could do this to our country. I felt so sorry for all the Arabics who didnt have anything to do with the attacks because I know people were going to be cruel to them. My cousin whos wife is Arabic didnt leave the house and didnt let the kids leave the house either, because they were so scared of what ignorant people might say or do to them.
The horrible terrorist attacks of that day will live in the memories of all us. I know the attacks made my family closer because it made us appreciate each other more. We knew that no one is promise tomorrow but this made that wise old saying so true. I love my family but this made me call my mother and father everyday just sometimes to say I love them and to ask how they were doing? I am a very sensitive person, I cried so hard that day because I felt that the victims of September 11, 2001 was apart my family. But then I realized that they were apart of my United States of America family and thats why it was so horrible. I felt that these horrible events made the nation a lot closer. Most people learned that we must cherish one another in order for our nation to recover and prosper.
I didnt know anyone personally that was killed in the attacks but many of my friends had family members that were. This made it hit even closer to home, I had to console them and be strong for them. The university was incredible, beautiful memorial services were held for the victims and counseling was provided for anyone who needed it. I couldnt have imagined if one of my family members were victim to the attacks, no one should have to lose a love one and especially not like that. I pray for the those who lost love ones and I pray for Osmaha Bin Laden who has all this hate and evil in him that he will come forward to face prosecution for his wrong doing. Well you hit the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon, and killed thousands of innocent people but you still missed America An Open Letter To a Terrorist.

              <text>Dear J.--

these are weird
and terrible times. My kids are all shell-shocked and nervous about
what's flying overhead. C. is hyper-aware of mortality, illness,
disaster. M. and I are
worried about economic collapse, physical safety, -- Who knows what will get
blown up next, or which biological toxins will be dumped into our water
and air supplies? I heard a commenator last night say, "This is not the

beginning of the end, it's the beginning of the beginning of the
end...." What the hell does that mean? (At the end of the movie,
Millennium, a voice-over says: "This is not the end. This is not the
beginning of the end. This is the end of the beginning." -- I'm not
sure what that means, either, but beginnings and ends are much on my
mind, lately.)

So far, a few guys I know are lost or dead in the collapse of the WTC.
They were former students of mine who were/are in the Fire Dept. and/or
Rescue Service. One was an EMT. I suspect I'm going to know of one or
two cops who are lost as well. Even if I knew no one, the grief I feel
--and the disorientation--when I see an empty space where the twin
towers were....it's indescribable (the grief and the empty space). It's

one thing to delete physical structures within the frames of
computer-generated film images. The idea of whole buildings, thick with

symbolism and crammed full of human beings, being erased from the
city-scape is nearly impossible to wrap our heads around. It's
difficult to remember why to do things-- why do I teach? What do I tell

students? How do I require them to do the things they need to do to
graduate? Why graduate? Why not stay, "forever," in the safety of
academia where the thing that counts is mastery of skills and
information? Who wants to be "out there" where the bombs fall,
buildings collapse, people are crushed/burned/blown apart?

Long Island is a surreal place. People go about their business with the

gusto of old. Bitchy Plainview women still try to cut you off for a
parking spot at the shopping center. The only differencce now is they
do it with an American flag duct-taped to their antennae There is, it's

true, an air of slightly increased courtesy, a little bit more patience
here and there, less road-rage, more expressions of care. In Manhattan,

people walk around with grim expressions, occasional glances upward,
faces enclosed in the private strain that public disasters provoke. No

one knows what to say anymore. People talk about the plane crashes and
building collapses using the language of the movies. And I guess that's

the available idiom. Still, it's unsettling to hear that the pancaking
of the towers and of building #7 "was just like The Towering Inferno or
Die Hard." There has been nothing like this disaster. When M. called me from work to tell me: 1)don't go into NYC and 2)to turn on the

tv right away, I caught the last few seconds of an emergency report on
the first crash. Then, moments later, I watched, live, the second plane

crash into the South Tower. When I saw the huge, rising plumes of
smoke, I thought: what did I just see? Then I thought: what is in that smoke? where is it
heading? how many people are going to breathe that stuff? I wondered
whether the towers were going to fall over or down, whether the
surrounding buildings would all be crushed, whether the gas-lines were
going to snap, ignite, and then explode. I wondered how many children
had just died, how the people on the floors above the crash had prepared

to die. It wasn't until 12 hours later that I heard--and thought--about

a cinematic connection to the events. You go home from movies (or eject

the videotape); none of us can ever go home from this catasrophe.

I feel certain that this is not the end of the acts of terrorism---not
even close. Something awful--maybe more awful--is brewing. There was
too much planning for this set of acts, too much time taken, for me to
think that this was the whole event. We'll all obsess about Osama
bin-Laden and his henchmen, but he is far too smart and practiced for me

to believe that his capture and death will amount to an end of terror.
In fact, there is general agreement that he has surely instructed the
various terrorist-cells around the world that the moment he is captured
and/or assasinated, terrorists around the world are to act according to
a longstanding plan for extremist retribution. Blown up buildings,
germ-warfare, internet scrambling, local and national disasters, nuclear

weapons....who knows? Probably the point is that we cannot fully
imagine what will be next. And the fact that we are all looking over
our shoulders and at the skies is an indication of how effective this
single set of terrorist acts has been. Paranoia on a national level
(actually a multi-national level) is as effective a means of disrupting
a society as most others ways.

Some of the analysts are saying, with gravity and deep voices, that we
have been "naive for too long" about terrorism. Who's "we"? And if
"we" had been less naive? What would "we" have done? Obviously, such
analysts are referring to those in a position to do something(s)
specific about these potential attacks-- the military, the state
department, the FBI and CIA, etc. But what could anyone have done to
have prevented these suicide attacks? How does one stop a death-plane a

few thousand feet away from a skyscraper? How many warplanes would we
have to have in the sky at once to have been able to shoot one of the
hi-jacked planes out of the sky? And is that what we will have to arm
ourselves to do now? Prepare our flying forces and surface-to-air guns
and missiles to shoot plane-loads of our own people to avoid having a
250-passenger plane become a weapon capable of killing thousands? How
perfect for terrorists--- to be able to watch, now, as the U.S. gears up

to defend ourselves against such weapons.

When I tell the kids that things will be all right now, they know I
can't say that with certainty. They know that it's wishful thinking.
They hear the words "The new war" and are afraid.....as am I. As if we
are still living in the 19th century, people still talk about wars as
fights that can be won. I don't believe wars can be won anymore.
People will be lost, land will be destroyed, buildings incinerated, ways

of life evaporated....but what will a "win" look like? How many 'rogue'

nations will we have to level? Do we still think body-counts are a fair

measure of who is winning and losing?

Probably we should just watch Israel and do whatever the Israelis
suggest. For the entire lifetime of Israel, its people have had to
fight off enemies just to continue to exist as a nation. Israel has
been surrounded by terrorists for 50 years. Somehow, Israel has
survived. Of course, Israel has had to kill thousands to do so.

In tiny nations around the world, civil wars have resulted in the deaths

of 5 and 10% of populations-- gigantic numbers of people lost to
skirmishes for land, religious dominance, political sovereignty.... and
now, in the U.S., two one-thousandths of our population has been
murdered, and the entire nation fears for its existence....and rightly
so.

This is not a cheery greeting, I'm afraid....but this stuff is so
crammed into the 'front' of my mind, I don't know what to do with
it/myself. I hope you are well, and safe and warm... I hope D. is
feeling better and that your kids can learn all they can about what's
going on without becoming numb or apathetic or bored. This is not a
time for apathy or boredom or narcissism or anasthesia. I don't know
for sure what any of us should be doing, but it's not a bad start to
appreciate what we have, who we share it with, and the fact that, for
now, we are alive and can at least hope for a survivable future.

Whew.

I love you, talk to you soon....and happy (early) birthday.

The dark brother from the north.

Michael-
Yours was not a depressing dark letter, but rather a wake up call to all those who might begin to feel relaxed that nothing else seems to be happening. We have to rely on our government to make some correct choices, but that doesn't mean we should feel safe because of them. Our sense of safeness has been compromised so that we all have eyes in the back of our heads. We need to be more aware of all surroundings- who is eating at the table next to you, who is sitting in the movie theater, who might
accidentally bump into you when you were walking on a crowded street. It's sad that we don't feel safe anymore, but it is important
that we have a heightened sense of awareness too. I guess I always thought that our country was too remote, too powerful,
guarded too closely to ever have anything this awful happen. Now I walk around with this cowardly feeling fear that I might take a
drink one day and die 30 seconds later, or worse, my kids might go on a bus trip and the bus could blow up. I don't feel like I can
protect anyone anymore. However, I think this fear will soon pass and change to outrage and defensiveness. We would love to
catch all the bin Ladens in the world and rip them apart piece by piece, but others will inevitably pop up somewhere else. They
have always been around, like AIDS, we just didn't open our coddled eyes wide enough. Now we are aware- maybe we SHOULD
learn from Israel! I am always an optimist so I feel that maybe there is a light somewhere. We all have to try and think that way. [J.E.]</text>

Thanks for the concern, guys. I'll send details soon. My wife works (make that worked) in the World Trade Center. She was late to work today. I was in Manhattan, too, but in midtown. After some frantic phone calls, I established she was OK and we met and are now at home. Thanks again.

I'm on a bus going across midtown, and my wife calls to tell me that she's arrived at the WTC and it's on fire. I suggested that she stick around and see if they clean things up promptly and maybe they'll let her into the building. I turned to tell the guy next to me that the WTC was on fire, and he told me that he saw a plane hit it. Then another guy on a cell phone announces that a second plane just hit the buildings. I just told me wife to stay there! So, I try to call her back but all the circuits are busy since everyone is using their cell phones. I finally get her on the phone. She's OK. So I we plan to rendevous at the ferry. I call my dad to update him. He tells me the building just collapsed. Jesus Christ. So again, it takes me like 30 minutes to get her on the phone. She was away from the area and unscathed. So far, she's been able to confirm that most of her friends and co-workers are OK, too. She saw people jumping from the building, though, so that's gotta suck. It's very odd looking at the Manhattan skyline and not seeing those two buildings..

> "Our Hero's"
>
>To: All the Hero's of our Nation
>
> Hero's are the brave and courageous people who are there
> for you in your time of need, and as our hero's were there in our
> time of need, we shall be there in theirs.
> We will never forget Sept,11,2001. The day that 911 was the
> emergency call that millions of people heard, seen, and wept together
> for as one big family. As we all watched in horror thousands of innocent
>lives die of a horrible death. We all felt like we lost someone from our
>family. Not gender, age, religion or race stood in the way of American's
>helping one another. Years from now, will we still be one big family? only
> time will tell.
> So many people either lost someone, or knew someone who lost
>someone.
> We all cried the same tears, and as some are still in shock, others are
>in
>denial. We keep on asking ourselves the same question over and over again,
> how could this have happened?, and when will the pain and fear go away?.
>I don't think life will ever be the same again, at least life as we knew it
>to be.
> We should all remember that our Hero's were there long before
>Sept,11,2001 and they will be there long after the clean up is done and
>over
> with. As hard as it is for us to keep going on with our lives, our Hero's
>show
> us that Life must go on. No matter how much it hurts us or tires us, Life
> must go on.
> There are so many ways that the people who cry each and every day
> since Sept,11,2001, could thank you. The courage that you show us, the
> pain in your face, the tears in your eyes, the non stopping of work, and
>the
>danger that you have to see and work through each and every day. Some of
> us would love to go down there and lend a helping hand, a shoulder to cry
>on, or donate a lot of money. But for some of us, we can barely feed our
>own.
> So for all those who perished on Sept,11,2001, their families, those
>who continue to donate supplies needed in the search for our loved
>ones, our Military who are fighting for us, and those who never give up in
>the
>search for our family and friends. Our Prayers are with you each and every
>day. You are all our Hero's, God Bless you all, and God Bless America.
>
>Sincerely
>

              <text>Hello professor XXX,

I am writing to inform you that as of next week-if there aren't anymore terrorist attacks-I will be reinstated into school for the rest of the semester. I am still on alert, and my next call from the national guard will be possibly be to be gone "indefinite" as my orders say.

Professor, I want to update you of my situation. Since we (my unit) were the first ones on the scene, and the last to leave from the initial forces there, we saw a lot of things that that to many of us became traumatizing.

A crisis management group came to speak to us and determined-from us being exposed to body parts, and the aftermath of such a horrific event-that we are going through traumatic stress reaction. It is a very emotional time for me; I get very emotional when talking about the things I saw and did out there in ground zero. I am supposed to talk about it and accept the emotions, but can't because I don't want to traumatize my family.

Today I experienced a flashback, where I thought I was back out on the Manhattan streets and spoke to my mother as if she was a soldier whom I was asking about our status and war situation; she left the room scared and reacted to it by making me hot chocolate to drink. I am having trouble sleeping, because I hear people screaming when I close my eyes, I can't sleep alone, and out there I rested for 15 minutes a night where I laid down armed with a knife.

If I experience a flashback, please be very patient and excuse me. If you feel offended, or "weird" from my being emotional by speaking, then I understand if you want me to stay away. I fear that people my think that I am crazy.

I am so happy to come back to my beloved thematics program, and want to thank you and all the thematic studies professors at John Jay College for your support in this difficult situation. When I speak of you and some of the professors to my friends or family, I speak of you guys (especially you) as if you were family.

PS Would you mind if I spoke to you because I really need to speak to someone about this. Please don't think I am crazy.</text>

<text>thanks aj. ditto here. i was concerned about you and i'm glad to hear that you
are ok. as you might imagine, i have several emails to return and must choose
the impersonal route as well to effectively do so. here are some thoughts that i
had put together in a previous email. take care and please give my best to
francine, marcia and brandon...
AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE, MY VIEW IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT LOOKING SOUTH NOW. WHAT A
SIGHT. I HEARD AND SAW THE CRASHES AND THE CRUMBLING FROM MY ROOFTOP DECK A HALF
MILE AWAY. WHAT A DISASTER. I SPENT THE REST OF THE DAY AND MOST OF THE NIGHT
WORKING AT SEVERAL TRIAGES, THE LAST OF WHICH WAS SET UP IN THE AMEX BUILDING
DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE TWINS. I CAN'T BEGIN TO TELL YOU THE SIGHTS
AND DEVASTATION I WITNESSED. BODIES AND THEIR PARTS, REMAINS OF VEHICLES AND
LARGE CHUNKS OF BUILDINGS, PAPER, AND CEMENT SOOT WERE EVERYWHERE. I WENT TO
HELP EMERGENCY CREWS REMOVE VICTIMS AND CARRY THEM TO MEDICAL ATTENTION BUT THE
ONLY THINGS THAT CAME OUT OF THE WRECKAGE WHEN I WAS THERE WERE READY FOR BAGS.
EMERGENCY WORKERS COULD NOT EVEN GET CLOSE TO THE DEVASTSTION FOR ABOUT 8 HOURS.
SMOKE AND FIRE REMOVED MOST OF ANY HOPE THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN OF PULLING OUT
SURVIVORS. THERE WILL BE A FEW BUT NOT MANY. MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE VICTIMS
AND THEIR FAMILIES. I HOPE WE IDENTIFY WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS COWARDLY ACT
AND PUNISH THEM ON A SCALE THAT WILL PREVENT THEM AND OTHERS WHO EVER THOUGHT
ABOUT DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO US AGAIN. I'M SICK OF THIS HAPPENING IN OUR
BACKYARDS. THIS TIME IT WAS MINE. SOMETIMES I WISH I WERE STILL IN THE MILITARY
SO I COULD HAVE A HAND IN THE BACKLASH. THEY WILL PAY, BUT UNFORTUNATELY NEVER
BE ABLE TO REPLACE WHAT THEY TOOK FROM SO MANY PEOPLE.

> Sorry for the impersonal nature of this e-mail, but wanted to let you know I
> am fine (physically). Francine is fine, too. Please pray for the injured

<text>Thanks. I added my dad's name to the list. He was on the 34th floor of WTC 1 when that building was hit. He said there was an unreal explosion and the building was shaking quite a bit. Then they saw debris out the window and
started going down the stairwell. It took them about 20 minutes to get out. Then they started walking away and saw the other building explosion. By the time they made there way to City hall they saw the buildings beginning to
collapse. He then made his way up to Penn Station and eventually made it home. He seemed to be o.k. over the phone but he did see lots of body parts and corpses... He was also "joking" how all his tools, his sneakers, and
his monthly train were left behind. He should be able to ride the LIRR for free for the rest of his life! He's been planning on retiring by the end of the year, but this might prompt him to do it even earlier.
