Title A name given to the resource 334.jpeg Description An account of the resource In the aftermath of 9/11, I felt anxiety and violation that my neighborhood was deeply affected by the disaster. It was eerie walking down the vacant streets of Mott, Bayard, and Canal; officers and sirens in the near distance, turning the neighborhood into Checkpoint Chinatown. Lower Manhattan had lost the crowds that it once drew and was feeling the rippling effects of 9/11. Local businesses, which heavily depend on tourism, were in jeopardy of folding. Articles about the economy of Chinatown were frequently appearing in the New York Times and this made me feel depressed and frustrated. In response to these feelings, I felt the need to be proactive and wanted to encourage people to come back to Chinatown and support the neighborhood. With the help of a close friend, the result was the creation of a button with an image we felt, represented Chinatown and the nearby communities. In the weeks following 9/11, I distributed these buttons to friends and acquaintances from outside the area. Title A name given to the resource 60.pjpeg Description An account of the resource 9/11 was my response to the tragedy, like so many felt compelled to express themselves in reaction. Some people displayed flags, place memorial flowers, said prayers, but being an artist I created this collage. I started with real Afghanistan postage stamps for the "World Day of Tourism" (in french) and transformed them into the "World Day of Terrorism." "Postes Afghanes" became "Postes Taliban" featuring Usama bin Laden rather than a cultural monument of Afghanistan. Featured is a prominent map of the country that few of us knew existed and all came to know so extensively. Featured in the foreground is a scale model of the WTC that I bought after the event as if to preserve some memento or piece of the missing buildings. In front of the buildings it says "Warning" in English and Arabic. In the upper right corner, my American Flag, is taken from a garment made in the USA. So in the brief time it took me to try to hold on to the vanished WTC, the Afghan War that followed became instrinsically linked with it forever. 911DA Item Elements describing a September 11 Digital Archive item. Title A name given to the resource 1866.jpeg Description An account of the resource Photo taken by friends of mine a year prior to Sept 11. This picture was later donated to The Royal Canadian Legion Br#3 in Deer Lake, NL. CA. I took a digital shot of the picture and enhanced it into a fitting closure to a terrible tragedy.
