As you know, this Fund was enacted as part of a comprehensive package which bailed out the airlines industry and imposed restrictions on the rights of the victims' relatives to sue the airlines in court. We implore upon you, as our elected officials, to demand changes to the interim rules issued by Kenneth Feinberg, the Special Master. As it stands, Mr. Feinberg's self-imposed rules fail to satisfy the letter or the spirit of the legislation which was enacted. Specifically, we request that you act on our behalf and demand the following changes to the interim rules: 1. The arbitrary income limits imposed by the Special Master are not only unfair but also inconsistent with the letter and the spirit of the law. Those victims from the financial industry are specifically harmed by this limit. They were targeted and murdered precisely because of the jobs they held, and where they worked-the World Trade Center, the Financial Capital of the world, the embodiment of financial success. Those who achieved such success should see that reflected in their awards. They personified American Business and commerce, democracy and freedom. We ask that you demand that Mr. Feinberg lift the arbitrary income limits so that each family can be treated fairly, commensurate with the support they provided their families before their death. 2. September 11th was a day that nobody will ever forget. Fortunately for me, I did not know anyone who was killed or affected by the event. I agree that the compensation money going to the families of victims in the tragedy is a good thing and that it will help out as much as it can; however, this money should go to EVERYONE, regardless of race, color, gender, sexual preference, etc. Discriminating against gays and lesbians is wrong and they should get the same treatment as everyone else. Millions of people encounter death, injury and extreme hardship in the course of their existence; for most there is no fund or assistance of any kind. While these attacks are horrible and all of us feel great sympathy for the families of the lost and injured, it strikes me as the penultimate example of greed and lack of appreciation when people are complaining that they are not getting enough "charity." While I do have concerns that the funds may be distributed inequitably - the life of a well to do bond trader is not worth a penny more than the life of a janitor who worked for the same company - the fact that some people feel that funds in excess of a million dollars "is not nearly enough" to make up for the loss of a loved one is not only ludicrous, it is an insult to the memory of the person who's life was lost. As one complaining victim's family member stated to the press, "no amount of money can make up for the loss of my husband..." and no amount of mere capital ever could. Does this mean that no amount given is good enough, that the incredible generosity of the American people is looked upon by the recipients as a "not quite enough?" Having donated to the Red Cross and the Artist's Tribute to Heroes, I now regret that I took one crumb of food from my family's mouth to help these people who feel greed when they should express nothing but thanks for the kind of financial aid the vast majority of us never get no matter how grievous or unfair the circumstances surrounding our personal misfortunes. If anything, in times of personal crisis, our government merely tends to serve as a source of more pain and suffering for victim's or their families - not the source of solace and financial support these people have the audacity to complain about. Other victims of crime and corruption should be complaining about the total sum of nothing but headaches and hassles they got versus the incredible sums of money and support the victims of September 11th are getting. Thursday, March 14, 2002 3:45 PM distribution of the 9/11 funds To Whom it May Concern, I just got done reading an article which stated that the funds that have been collected for the awful event that took place on 09/11/01 are only being distributed to certain individuals who meet certain criteria's. When I read this, it upset me. The bottom line is people lost their lives. How can you place a criteria on who receives the funds when this was never discussed prior to the money being raised. I do not care who gets this money, I donated because I could imagine the pain and suffering these people were going through who lost loved ones. To know that a few people are going to play "God" and determine who gets this money is disturbing. As an American, am extremely disappointed in the decision and I hope it will be re-thought. Gay, Lesbian, Jewish, Christian, Black, Chinese, white, etc... it doesn't matter, those who need help from this fund should be given relief funds. It is at times like these, that we must put all our biases aside and come together as a people and rise above this type of bigotry. In closing, if this is a common practice with the funds that are raised for a fundraiser, then this should be disclosed to the people that would like to donate prior to them money being received.
