Friday, December 14, 2001 2:45 AM To Mr. Feinberg: I am writing to urge you to ensure fair treatment for all surviving families of the tragedy on September 11th, including the children and families of low-wage workers and gay and lesbian families. Under traditional rules based on lost wages, the survivors of a bond trader earning millions of dollars per year might receive thousands of times as much compensation as the survivors of a dishwasher in one of the restaurants destroyed. Justice requires looking far beyond the last paycheck to the inherent worth of all those killed, so that a high minimum compensation level is set to lessen the disparities. It would be a double blow to the survivors to first lose their loved one and then watch as most of the taxpayer money went to those who were already well off in the first place. The second major issue has to do with recognizing the legitimacy of gay and lesbian relationships and families. Gay and lesbian families are especially vulnerable when one partner is killed. Because the option of marriage is unavailable, these families may find themselves in the traumatic predicament of having to prove that their union is legitimate. Fortunately, both the Red Cross and the State of New York have already announced that they will not discriminate against gay and lesbian families. The Department of Justice should do the same. Tuesday, March 12, 2002 7:50 AM Benefits for Gay Americans - 911 Fund I just read an article that both shocked and saddened me about how same-sex partners of those lost on September 11th may not receive the same benefits as heterosexual partners of those lost. The terrorists judged Americans for who and what we are, and elected to punish us for it. On that terrible day, they took the lives of people that they could not have possibly judged as good or bad people, doing right or wrong in the world. We were all labeled Americans and targeted for it. Who are we to judge the value of our gay Americans... the quantity or quality of their love, their commitment to each other, and the lives that they built together? Same-sex partners of survivors are left no less devastated or heartbroken by the loss of their loved one. Their lives are no less destroyed than their heterosexual counterparts. It's time, particularly right now in the face of trying to heal our country from the horrible scars September 11th left behind, for us to be very aware of whom we hurt on our own soil. Heart-wrenching events such as these call for love and compassion to heal, not laws. I ask you to reconsider your program's stance on providing benefits to the loved ones of gay Americans lost on September 11th. If the purpose of your program is to assist the loved ones of those lost; to help them rebuild their lives, to help them to face the future without the partner or parent they thought they'd have the opportunity to build that future with, I urge you to make decisions on that criteria alone. I nod my head and wonder if the events of September 11,2001 have taught us anything at all. , a hero who happens to be gay, gave his life freely to save  others and his fellow Americans from becoming part of the disaster that was 9/11. Friday, December 21, 2001 9:19 PM Good Plan While it is profoundly horrendous, the loss that so many families suffered in this single tragedy, the compensation plan outlined appears reasonable to me. Although I did not lose any loved one in this disaster, I have lost loved ones in other ways. Americans lose loved ones, old and young, each and every day, many of them in accidents and violence no less horrendous than those who died in these terrorist acts. But for those families, there is no "Big Brother" to even attempt to assure their future, beyond what they as a family may actually have created in areas of insurance, retirement or alternate incomes. Make no mistake, the whole of America wants these families to be assisted and are heartfeltly in favor of this fund from the government and also that the families should benefit directly from the ARC WTC Victims Fund, but America is also a country that recognizes greed when it raises it's ugly head. While reading the AP description of the this Federal Victims Compensation Fund, I was repulsed to see the quote of one woman (&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp, whose dissatisfaction with the fund as outlined so far was very apparent) that said in speaking of her husband, "No amount of money is ever going to replace him but my children should never have to want for anything." That unfortunately has the ring of greed in it. If her husband died in some other unfortunate manner, (as people have continued to do since 9/11) would they have had enough personal resources to make her comment come true? Perhaps, perhaps not. It's not for me to say. It is true that there is not enough money in the world to fully compensate for the loss of a loved one, a mate, a son or daughter, aunt, uncle, grandfather, or grandmother, or grandchildren. What about the soldiers killed so far in Afganistan. Aren't they part and parcel of this tragedy too. How much will the fund pay their families? Nothing, I know. And that is the point. But until the government gets into the business of compensating every family, every time any family member dies. . .well let's just hope that the majority of victims families can see beyond their own greed and realize everyone in America is pained by this loss of life, everyone in America truely wishes that this fund along with other funds, will help them bridge to their future. America does not want the victims to be forgotten a bit, and ask that they accept these funds in the spirit that they were set aside in and with the other funds in the spirit in which the givers intended, as heartfelt assistance in a time and circumstance of incredible sadness (not pity), and not as some form of deserved compensation. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. Thursday, December 27, 2001 7:51 PM To Whom It May Concern: I would like to know, as well as, others in the Travel Industry, why the travel industry as a whole has not been addressed or offered assistance. There are thousansd of agencies in this country that are indivdiually owned, and many are staffed by individuals who work on commission alone. After the 9/11 events, these individual companies have been financially devastated by this diaster, and to date no one has addressed the financial losses these companies and organizations have suffered. Such as; travel agencies and tour operators. I, am such and individual who is working for a self employed owner of an agency. I have lost my position due to the decline in business since 9/11. I am facing being homeless, having my automobile repossessed and have no food in my home. There has been no assistance provided to those individuals who operate such agencies, why is this? Yet there are millions designated to bail out the airlines. The airlines have suffered yes, as well their employees, however, individual travel agents who are paid on comission and operate on commission can not file for unemployment or have furlough pay as such with the airline employees. The airlines do not compromise the totality of the travel industy. The travel industry is comprised of many other types of individuals, yet these professionals have not once been mentioned or offered any assistance and some are facing bankruptcy. Why is this? Also, on another note. There was never any thanks to Nova Scotia for all their assistance during this crisis. I, was one of those stranded passengers, along with another 10,000 people who were stranded in this Province. Yet no one has offered a thank you or even mentioned what happened to all those stranded people. Doesn't anyone realize that we were stranded for an additional five to six nights, that we were not prepared for finanically? Why aren't these individuals being focused on and offered some, if minimal assistance or at the very least recognition for being stranded and the trauma involved being stranded in a foreign country and feeling displaced and almost orphaned. Yes, those lives lost and their families, friends and associates will never recover from this loss. But no one has yet to ask what it was like being in a foreign country and seeing a plane fly into the towers, as an American and how that has affected us. Some of us returned to no jobs, or decreased salaries, as in the travel industry and yet these issuses and people have been totally ignored. I think we deserve to be recognized at the very least for what we have also lost. My friend, who owns her agency is barely hanging-on, and she is the sole support of her family. The consolidators and tour operators that we deal with have had to alternate their staffing because they can not afford to pay their personal for a full 40 hours. This is still happening, again, why is there no focus on this? Yet we are encouraged to travel, however, how can the media encourage people to travel when there is no support of the travel industry or any kind of bail-out funds for the travel industry. Were is the Americanism in this, in the total disregard and ignoring the importance of this industry? Who is the first person a traveler calls when they are stranded? Not the airline, but the agent who sold them the ticket and/or the tour or vacation package and where would we be if there was not travel agent to call and assist that stranded passenger or solve that all important vacation problem when you are in a country that has English as a second language, who does this person call? I was two miles from ground zero, but watching the towers crumble is a sight I will never forget. And I grew up in a country racked by bombings (London in the 1970s was not a quiet and peaceful place). Secondly, I was horrified when I visited my brother, who lives in Bali (a Hindhu island, albeit in the largest Muslim country in the world) to hear the "well, you had it coming" attitude from Brits, Australians, New Zealanders alike; they felt that this government's arrogance and general discounting of the rest of the world contributed to the attack. Nonetheless... I happen to be heterosexual. I can't help it: I was born that way. But the idea that a surviving relative of a gay victim is treated differently than a straight relative brings bile to my throat. Heavens. you're not threatened by illegal aliens, so why by homosexuals? I always think that the most homophobic people secretly harbor a desire to try it. It would make my day if Messrs. Ashcroft and Bush were found in a Lewinskyesque position, but you can attribute that to the rantings of a left-winger. Do the right thing: treat gays the same way as you do illegal aliens.
